[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County

2023-04-28 Thread Diane Roberts
Hello All,

I wanted to share a couple of my recent observations. CCSP one of the few
bodies of water with low water lately. There is alot exposed shoreline &
mud. I did sink up to my knee boots in the mud so be prepared.

The Pelican Point hotspot has been closed due to nesting species in the
small forest. The Park Rangers are watching supporting this with possible
ticket.

The waterfowl, gulls, ibis, terns (not many) & Pelicans have had the area
to themselves. My observation seemed as tho these species were less
threatened and more relaxed while feeding. In the end, for the moment in
time that the area is closed, nature & birds are better off for it. Birders
are being patient inspire of incoming migrants.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Today and Yesterday

2017-04-09 Thread Ben S
Yesterday, April 8, I visited Cherry Creek SP. Birds of note at the marina
include a group of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, HORNED GREBES, WESTERN
GREBES,CLARKS GREBES, and CALIFORNIA GULL. Two CLARKS GREBES were at the
marina. They were my first of the year. At the Cottonwood Creek Wetlands, there
was the teal trifecta, a pair of BUFFLEHEAD, a SNOWY EGRET, and a BARN SWALLOW.
The Bufflehead pair has been there every visit for the last month or so.
Perhaps they will just breed here instead of going north. The Snowy Egret and
Barn Swallow were both alone and my FOY.

Since I live close by, I also went today. At the Cottonwood Creek Wetlands,
again there was the teal trifecta, the BUFFLEHEAD pair, a pair of RING-NECKED
DUCKS, a GREAT BLUE HERON, the continuing SNOWY EGRET, a BLACK CROWNED
NIGHT-HERON, a WILSONS SNIPE, TREE SWALLOWS, and BARN SWALLOWS. At the 12 mile
area, there was a distant flock of swallows. I was able to make out several
TREE SWALLOWS and an early CLIFF SWALLOW. On my way back, I was surprised to
see a GREAT EGRET flying past the Cottonwood Creek Wetlands. It was too large
to be the snowy. It had am all yellow bill and black legs. A FOY, and an
Arapahoe county bird. Nice.

For these next birds I want to make it VERY clear I did not observe them. Other
birders had submitted them on ebird. Franklin's Gulls and Yellow-headed
Blackbirds had been reported. Someone reported a pair of Eastern Bluebirds
collecting nest material at the "marsh area". I assume this is the Cottonwood
Creek Wetlands. Once in May of 2015 or 2016, I observed a male Eastern Bluebird
here. This report is completely possible. I will probably come back during the
week to look for these three species. I have not checked the BBA. Would Eastern
Bluebirds nesting in Arapahoe county be a first??

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park Bald Eagles

2017-01-05 Thread Aaron Tucker
They were posing like models this morning. Maybe it was the cold (it was
about 7 degrees at time of shot) but I was appreciative that they tolerated
me long enough to get some shots this morning. If you'd like you're own
shot, check the Swim Beach Picnic Area for the Adults and the Marina for
immatures. This one was out by Pelican Point/Eastern Boat Launch which is a
place I don't think I've ever seen them.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Dec 3, Rusty Blackbirds, Thayer's and Mew Gull

2016-12-04 Thread Scott Somershoe
All,
I didn't get a chance to post since yesterday afternoon, although I've been
awake most of the night (kids). Anyway, yesterday afternoon my 4 yr old
daughter and I relocated 2 rusty blackbirds along the shoreline south of the
parking lots on the east side boat ramp where they've continued. We didn't walk
out there, but scoped from the shoreline bluff. The rusty's were on what I'm
thinking is called Pelican Point. They had no fear of 3 guys with cameras and
tripods on the point! Very well may have been more rusty's down there but I
had limited time and kid in tow.

I never refound the Glaucous gull but there were thousands of birds on the
water. If it was still around and in view, I'd think I'd see that beast though!
Anyway, at the marina, thanks to Cheryl Teuton & Dan Brooke for pointing out
the adult Mew Gull that I'd missed. I think it was hidden from my scanning
perspective by ring-billed gulls and some equipment on the marina. Thanks! A
first cycle Thayers was at the marina, at least 1 Lesser black-backed gull
(Bill K noted there were 2, which was my suspicion but not my focus), and a
common loon were also seen from the marina. More time scanning without a
singing and dancing kiddo may have yielded more goodies but a 6 gull species
stop is nice regardless!

Maybe the cold (or anticipation) brought waterbirds in. There were impressive
numbers of gulls and common mergs on the water, which maybe were here a few
days ago, but Chatfield has been a real desert lately. I'll eventually get some
photos in my eBird list.

Good birding,
Scott Somershoe

Hi all!
Had a decent trip to CCSP today in search of Bald Eagles. Saw a total of 7,
most standing on the edge of the ice in the middle of the lake. One fully
mature and the rest were varying juvenile years. There was a juvenile in a
tree by the east entrance marina. He sure wasn't winning any beauty contests
but wasn't spooked by the wandering folks taking pics under his tree...aahh,
innocence and youth. Also saw a total of 5 American White Pelicans along that
same shore. Spring is on its way!!

* a beautiful bald eagle out on the ice, with gulls stalled above in the

* a white goose with the Canadians, near the boat launch south of the marina,
possibly a Ross's. Never got a clear enough view to be sure.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe County) DFO Bird trip, some goodies still there

2013-03-17 Thread Cheryl Teuton
Today at Cherry Creek State Park, 20 birders were able to see the continuing
juvenile Glaucous and Iceland Gulls (Thanks to Glenn Walbek for first
spotting these great birds), which were hanging out this morning at the bird
observation

platform off of the Prairie Loop. We also had 5 Snow Geese (2 adults and
3 juveniles), first seen at the model airplane field (Thanks to Gene
Rutherford for the heads up this AM), then later at the Cottonwood Marsh
pond that is visible from the main park road. A Great Horned Owl on a nest
was a nice treat (email me if you want to know where this bird can be
unobtrusively spotted). No super early migrants, but distant calls from a
resident Virginia Rail and a juvenile Sharp Shinned Hawk were highlights at
the 12 mile nature trail.

Thanks to all for coming and braving the March winds!

I spent some time at Cherry Creek SP today, mainly looking at gulls. I found
an adult Mew Gull, 2 pale first cycle Thayer's Gulls and a 2nd cycle Lesser
Black-backed Gull. Bleached first cycle feathers made the Thayer's Gulls look
like Iceland Gulls, and the Herring Gulls look like Thayer's Gulls. Yesterday
at Cherry Creek, I watched the Franklins Gulls put on an aerial show in the
stiff wind. In addition to the gulls there has been several Greater
Yellowlegs, a Semipalmated Plover (yesterday only) and a relatively short
billed, Long-billed Dowitcher still in basic plumage. The dowitcher did make
several single-note, high pitched alarm calls. Pics of some of these birds can
be found at the link below. Hooray, it's April!

five Western Grebes, one Clark’s Grebe, and two Greater Yellowlegs

At Cottonwood Pond: four Blue-winged Teal. In the same area and
northwestward, there was a dark adult Red-tailed Hawk that may have been a
Harlan’s-Western intergrade, with extensive white on the chest, pale forehead
and ring around the eye, white mottling on the nape, a pale band along the
scapulars and paler brown secondaries, and a pale red tail becoming whitish
toward the base and white along the side.

At the bird observation point on the Prairie Loop:

Semipalmated Plover-1 (very early) and American Avocet-1

At the Twelve Mile Picnic Area:

Bushtit-2

On the sandspit near the marina: hundreds of gulls, mostly Ring-billed
and California, but a scattering of Herring, two 1st-cycle Thayer’s
Gulls, one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, and a Franklin’s Gull. There were
also 14 American White Pelicans, but no cormorants yet. There was one Say’s
Phoebe on the dam face near the marina (probably the bird that wintered in the
area).

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe Co.

2010-09-10 Thread Andrews Robert
COBirders,

At Cherry Creek Reservoir this afternoon about 4 to 4:30 PM, I saw an immature
Sabine's Gull toward the center and east side of the southern part of the lake
(south of the swim beach). There was a dark jaeger sitting near the center of
the lake. I could not see much in the way of field marks, although it did seem
somewhat small and petite. But it was a long way off so I am not sure that
means much, and so I can't say anything about its identity.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park - Common Poorwill

2010-05-09 Thread Joe Roller
While birding along the leaf-strewn, shoreline path between the Prairie Loop
and the Mountain Loop at CCSP, I flushed a Common Poorwill at about 0945 today.
Otherwise, I found few migrants - just a dozen widely scattered Yellow-rumped
Warblers and the previously seen Great-tailed Grackle, which was trying to
attract attention from the top of a tree at the new wetlands.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park Reservoir, Arapahoe County, Saturday May 8

2010-05-08 Thread ravenzrule
Hi all,

I spent the morning birding Cherry Creek S P. I always try to pay it
a visit when I'm in Denver because it's nearly always rewarding and
today was no exception.

I entered the park at the Cottonwood Creek trail and began with the
new wetlands. They weren't hugely productive, with a pair each of
Am. Avocet Wilson's Phalarope, and three Least Sandpipers being
about it for shorebirds.

From there, I proceeded in toward the wetlands immediately east of the
model airplane field. I had great difficulty crossing the road
because of some cycling event in progress! I finally got a gap in the
bike traffic and got over to the little pull=off overlooking the
wetlands. The wetland was full of waders. There were 8 or 9 Plegadis
ibises present and to my delight, the first one I clapped my
binoculars on was a Glossy Ibis. I didn't get perfect looks at all of
them, but all the rest I did see well enough to be sure about were
White-faced Ibis. I'm assuming this is the same group reported by Joe
Roller about two weeks ago, although there do not seem to have been
any further mention of them. Although initially cooperative, my
presence must have been a bit intimidating and they flew and mostly
resettled themselves into less conspicuous places. I would not be
surprised if they have been present, but reclusive, in the interval
since their initial discovery. There was a Black-crowned Night-Heron
and a Snowy Egret in this area, as well.

All three teal species were present, including a gorgeous male
Cinnamon, but only Green-winged was numerous.

From there, I proceeded north along the west side of the lake and was
rewarded by a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Although I've been to Cherry
Creek several times over the years, I'd never seen one in Colorado
before, and had considered it a bit of a jinx bird. To fall back on
that cliche, it never rains but it pours I saw two more during the
course of the morning!

A group of 6 Eared Grebes was a nice sighting from the birding trail
overlook. From there, I reversed my direction and worked my way
around the south end of the lake. I had great opportunites to study
Yellow-rumped Warblers. I saw many Audubons, and at least two
Myrtles, and a definite hybrid with yellow confined to the throat and
white extensions onto the cheeks. Your Yellow-rumps, like your
juncos, are much more interesting than they are further east!

I had a couple of sightings of Say's Phoebes as I worked my way around
the lake. Eventually, I reached the beach fishing areas on the
other side. While scanning, I found a pair (or at least, two fairly
near each other) of Clark's Grebes among a dozen or so Western
Grebes. As the temperatures were cool, there were many swallows
flying low over the water. Cliff was the most abundant by far, with a
goodly number of Barn, and very small numbers of Bank, Northern Rough-
winged, Tree Violet-green--I think I literally had one of each of
the last three species. Nearby, I had a sighting of a swift. It
looked like a Chimney Swift, and I would have unhesitatingly called it
that had I seen it at home, but I would have assumed it was a Vaux's
Swift here. As I say, would have until I saw the post from Eric
DeFonso! Now I'm not sure *what* to think. Can anyone enlighten me
on swifts in the Denver area?

I then headed back toward the way I'd come, getting a look at a couple
of Orange-crowned Warblers and eventually seeing an initially somewhat
hard-to-see Yellow-breasted Chat.

I paused at the new wetlands and found the Least Sandpiper numbers had
increased to a dozen, and a Semipalmated Plover had also materialized.

Cheers,

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe

2010-04-29 Thread picapica
Dear Cobirders,

A fine birding day today in the rain sleet and spitting snow.

Among the highlights were one Wilson's Phalarope, 2 Least Sandpipers and 6
Semipalmated Plovers at the new wetlands.

At the now underwater spit in the southeast corner there were at least 60
White-faced Ibis, a single Marbled Godwit and 14 Willets all ankle deep in
the water.

All common species of swallows were easily seen perched low south of the
handicapped fishing pier and east of the parking area there.

At the wetlands area across the road from the model airplane field I saw a
Great-tailed Grackle in a tangle close to the water.my first of that species
in Arapahoe County.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County...sandhills, short eared owls??

2009-10-22 Thread mln66
Cherry Creek State Park this morning:

   - 30 sandhill cranes in the very SE corner of the lake
   - fly over of 400+ more cranes about 8am

Then there was the mixed bag of birds after that:

   - Peregrine Falcon herding an inflight flock of starlings before plucking
   one from the flock
  - this was interesting in the fact it was a slow and deliberate
  stalking of the starlings.
  - got them into a tight bunch and would make slow lunges at the flock
until it finally pulled one from the group
  - The starlings then followed the falcon to the ground
   - Osprey at lake Loop
   - Short-eared owls-two at lake loop?
  - feel pretty confident in the ID after consulting the books.
  - flew as we got out of the car
  - both myself and Bob (forgot his last name) noted the smaller size
  and very short tail
  - definetely was not thinking short-eared owl that late in the morning

I am hoping others will help me confirm the owl siting.
pretty quiet on the water this morning...did not note anything other than
all the regulars.

For the Cherry Creek Count we will meet at the Marina (near the west end
park entrance) at 6:30 AM on Monday May 11. You can plan on joining us for
a few hours in the AM or for the whole day. For those of you that stick it
out for most of the day -- I will host a post-count gathering at a local
Mexican restaurant (yes, you can consider this bribery -- there will be free
food and beverages). If you think you might be able to participate in the

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park

2009-05-02 Thread Lynn Ackerman
It was a nice morning out at Cherry Creek State Park.

Sightings at the pond across from the airplane field included:
White-faced ibis
Avocet
Long-billed dowitcher
Cinnamon Teal
Blue-winged Teal
Western Grebe
Coots
Killdeer
Yellow-rumped Warbler

Behavioral Observation: I saw a kestral dive to the ground and catch a
rodent near the pond. Almost the minute it was attempting to fly off with
the prey a magpie starting chasing the kestral clearly wanting a meal. As
the kestral neared the forest two more magpies joined in. I lost sight of
the kestral, so don't know if it kept the meal, but chances didn't look
good.

New pond sightings included:
Lesser Yellowlegs
Semipalmated Plover
Yellow-headed Blackbirds

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park/Stilt Sandpiper!

2009-05-01 Thread Mike Freiberg
Landbirds were few and far between today at the park. Mainly Myrtle, Audubon's,
and Orange-crowned Warblers at numerous spots.

late in the evening the farm pond adjacent to the model airplane field hosted:

1 Stilt Sandpiper
1 Western Sandpiper
3 Semipalmated Sandpipers
Many Least Sandpipers
4 Long-billed Dowitchers
1 Merlin
1 Semipalmated Plover

Lots of Western kingbirds, Say's Phoebes and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Can't
wait to get out tomorrow.

Good Birding,

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park 4/29

2009-04-29 Thread Cheryl Teuton

This morning at about 6:30 at Cherry Creek in the newer wetland area, we saw a
peregrine falcon, 2 semipalmated plovers (along with about 8 killdeer), six
long billed dowitchers, a western sandpiper, 4 least sandpipers, 5 lesser
yellowlegs, a Wilson's phalarope, and 2 savannah sparrows, along with the usual
avocets, dabblers, etc. The ibis were in the field across the way, but we
didn't have time or proximity to scan them.

[cobirds] Cherry Creek State Park, Arapahoe County

2009-04-18 Thread mln66

Unable to locate the Chestnut Collard Larkspur or the American Golden
Plover seen yesterday. I really tried to make all the Killdeer into
the Plover, but just did not work. The pond by the airplane park and
the new wetlands south of the pond were swollen 2-3 times their normal
size.

Of note:
American Avocet
White Faced Ibis
Western Grebe
barn Swallows everywhere
Mountain Bluebirds everywhere
dozen Says Phoebes hunting the flooded grassfield near the airplane
park
1000+ coots on the water
lesser yellowlegs
