[cobirds] John James Audubon exhibition coming to Longmont Museum.
Hi birders, This looks like it might be good with many additional events to take part in. June 4 - September 18, 2011 http://www.ci.longmont.co.us/museum/exhibits/audubon.html From the website: The Longmont Museum is very proud to present an exhibition of 64 prints from Audubon’s first edition, plus four large animal prints from his later Imperial Quadrupeds edition and prints from later editions and several of Audubon’s contemporaries. This exhibition also features several original oil paintings by Audubon, as well as personal belongings such as the silver cup presented to his engraver upon completion of the publication of volume two of “The Birds of America.” Enjoy, --Scott Scott E. [cobirds] Fwd: Boulder County Audubon Program 10/25 Black Swift
Not sure if this got to Cobirds, another great reason to support the avian conservation work of your local non-profits, and the great programs presented by many Audubon chapters. Best- Scott Severs Longmont Coolest Bird, the Black Swift, Reveals Its Migratory Secrets Posted by: Stephen Jones curle...@comcast.net Date: Sun Oct 23, 2011 2:02 pm ((PDT)) The Coolest Bird, The Black Swift, Reveals Its Migratory Secrets. Jason Beason, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory Tuesday, October 25, 7:15 p.m., Boulder Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Ave. Black swifts nest behind waterfalls in remote mountain canyons. Until recently, we knew very little about their migratory and wintering habits. In 2009 researchers from Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory paired with the US Forest Service to track four radio transmitter-equipped swifts from nesting areas in Colorado to wintering areas in South America. The data from the devices indicate that three of the four swifts spent the winter of 2010 in a country south of the equator that currently has no sighting records for this species. Jason will tell us how the researchers pulled off this amazing feat and also explore the unique nesting ecology of these fabulous birds. Conversation and general hobnobbing begins at 6:45. [cobirds] re: Snowy Owls
An important note from ebird.org: An important word of caution about this striking and photogenic species--the birds we see in the states are already stressed, since they moved from locations in the north due to a lack of food. One of the southeast Wisconsin Snowy Owls in Ozaukee County was seen for a few days and then found dead by a farmer. Apparently the bird was extremely emaciated, so it likely starved to death. While very beautiful and often approachable, life for them can at times be very difficult, and keeping a good distance so as not to disturb them is the best approach. Please don't use live mice to lure them in to roadsides for photography. Flushing a large raptor, especially a white one can catch the attention of nearby crows causing unnecessary mobbing. We want these birds to successfully over-winter and then return back to the tundra to breed next spring. I agree - better that these owls survive than collect digital dust on someone's hard drive or photo site. As this species roosts during the day for the most part if you flush them, you are causing energetic stresses on the bird. If they flush, you need a better camera/scope, or a blind. --Scott Scott E. [cobirds] amazing US invasion, it continues to SNOW
Hi Birders, A brief look at reports from neighboring states shows 89 +/- Snowy Owls observations in Nebraska, and 30 or so in Kansas. Wow! Likely the largest irruption of the species in nearly 40 to 50 years. Take a look as various state listserves at: http://birdingonthe.net/birdmail.html Kansas KOS map: http://ksbirds.org/KS_SNOW_11_12.htm I hope folks will report their Snowy Owl (and other bird) sightings to ebird.org as it will provide a historical snapshot of sightings that can be used in real time by researchers. As said before ebird is really fun and EASY to use and your sightings become an easily accessed diary of your birding life. And your sightings contribute almost instantly to the knowledge of bird distribution in the world. I am surprised more people don't use it but then I admit am not the best when it comes to CRBC reports (working harder on that New Years resolution). If you need help with ebird, drop me a line, or there are many others available to help. --Scott Scott E. [cobirds] RMBO Dinosaur Ridge Hawk Watch opens March 1.
The Dinosaur Ridge Hawkwatch supported by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory begins its season March 1 and runs officially through May 7. It is entirely staffed by a volunteer crew of counters and observers under the leadership of RMBO staff biologist Jeff Birek. Visitors are welcome to come by and help watch for migrating raptors. The hawkwatch is located along the top of the Dakota Hogback along the trail leading south approximately 0.55 miles south of the Stegosaurus Parking Lot located at the southeast corner of County Rd 93 (aka Colorado 26) and I-70 (exit 259). Hours are generally 8am to 5pm daily. [cobirds] more three-toed woodpeckers - Rocky Mtn. N.P. Larimer
Recent survey work in Rocky Mtn. N.P. has yielded American three-toed woodpeckers (ATTW) as the most detected Picoides species so far during point counts this spring. Drumming has been the best detection method for individual especially in the first couple of hours after sunrise. I detected three individuals on 5/28 along the trail leading from Bear Lake to Bierstadt Lake in areas of insect-killed conifers. This description seems good for Mississippi Kites. Location Valmont and Folsom flying east with grackle escorts. My late friend Wes Sears and I last saw one 21 years ago at Sawhill Ponds. A sharp looking juvenile American Golden-Plover was working the mudflats among the fishermen at from 1735 hrs to sunset on the west side of Lagerman Reservoir. [cobirds] Broad-winged Hawk redux Longmont 9/23
Hawkers, After deciding not to go to my favorite hawk watch west of Boulder, I decided to see who would float over near my home in SW Longmont today. I ended up seeing a departure (over a 2.5 hr period) of 16 Broad-winged Hawks from Longmont, most less than 200m off the ground. It appeared that many, based on their height of flight roosted overnight in the older parts of Longmont (possibly near a traditional vulture roost), or along the St. Vrain Greenway. My observations were in this order: 1, 4, 1, 6, 3, and 1. Departure was somewhat late, with the largest mini-kettle seen around 1230 hrs. I started around 1100 and finished at 1330 hrs. Birds moved mostly NE to SW, often following a path that the vultures regularly use in SW Longmont. Broad-winged Hawks are peaking at our latitude at this time, and will decline quickly now into generally the first week of October. Preferring to roost in trees, our heavily timbered Front Range towns provide stop-over sites for this species. I believe this species migrates more commonly than expected here but is under-reported. Dave Leatherman's post today of the kettle near Ft. Collins re-enforces this point. Additional birds included 3 Northern Harriers, 3 Swainson's Hawks (not displaying migratory behavior), and an adult Cooper's Hawk that seem be a local showing curiosity in the group of 6 Broadies in the nearby airspace. What worked for me today was a clear view to the north, positioned south of the heavily treed portions of town. And credit is due to the Turkey Vultures! Snap shots of a juv. dark morph, an adl. light morph etc. can be seen here: https://picasaweb.google.com/104152828725695920528/HawkWatchLongmont92312?authuser=0feat=directlink Good birding! --Scott Scott E. As Steve Mlodinow pointed out the water bird variety is good right now and could be worth checking frequently for new arrivals. The entrance ($8.00/car) is accessed off Weld County Road 26 east of the County Line Road. The bird is in adult non-breeding plumage. As the general date for the arrival of this species at our latitude is around the first half of October, after work I went to see if this individual might have arrived. BCNA Winter Program Bird Count Retrospective with Dr. William Weber Though best known as the dean of Colorado botanists and founder of the University of Colorado herbarium, Bill Weber has been a birder and naturalist all his life, beginning in the 1930s when he founded the Sialis Bird Club in Bronx Park. He and his young friends were actually responsible for the Wooden Dovekie incident of the Christmas Census. His notebooks from those early years have contributed to a new book by Paul Buckley on early birding in the New York City area. Dr. Weber, now 94, will share stories from those early years. In the spirit of the occasion, we will also discuss results of the 2012 Boulder Christmas Bird Count, conducted on December 16. [cobirds] fwd: Twin Lakes migrant trap under threat (Boulder Co.)
Many of you have seen excellent birds at Twin Lakes in Gunbarrel. Last night a report came through that the trees on either side of the trails may be slated for removal. Please contact Susan in the message below if you have any suggestions. The quality of the birding here would drop dramatically. --Scott Scott E. Severs Longmont, CO scottesev...@gmail.com Begin forwarded message: From: sbwinter2 lapisl...@gmail.com Date: June 30, 2013, 6:51:14 PM MDT To: nature-...@yahoogroups.com Subject: [nature-net] Need advice on what to do about the Twin Lakes tree removal Hi. Some of you may remember me. I was very active for a few years in the early 2000s (and used to do the newsletter and website). I have lived in Gunbarrel since 2001, and just on the east side of the lakes since 2008. I just learned, and confirmed with the county, that the North Boulder Farmers ditch company was told by the State Engineers to remove all of the trees that surround the Twin Lakes, including those on the outside of the trails too. The county has not seen the report, but were told it was due to seepage, drought and that if a tree were to ever fall into the water, there would be dam issues. I asked why this was happening now - what changed. I was told that the inspector who had this area for years finally retired, and this was a new inspector. Tree removal is supposed to start happening now. So far, I can tell they have been trimming. This is awful on so many levels. The wildlife is going to be hurt tremendously. There hasn't been anything in the papers yet either. I, and my neighbors, have been trying to spread the message by word of mouth initially while we look for info. We want to fight this since it is ridiculous. And I am sure if more people knew, they would also be outraged. So, any help/advice is most appreciated. [cobirds] Fwd: Twin Lakes tree removal update (Boulder Co.)
Folks, Below is an update regarding the possible tree removal operation at the Twin Lakes birding hotspot. Thanks to Maeve Conran at KGNU, Elena Klaver, Susan Winter, and several local birders who did some sleuthing into the issue. Looks like some continued discussions will be needed with the agencies in charge, but for now the cutting has been delayed until public meetings are held. --Scott Scott E. I also confirmed this with John the President of the Boulder and Left Hand Ditch Company. The Division of Dam Safety also said that they had required that smaller newer growth trees be cleared out, and that no directive to remove any of the larger trees had been given at this time. I think it would be interesting to talk to someone about the importance of that area to migrating birds...and also how all these different interests play out together (State engineer's office who say they need to mandate this type of thing for safety purposes, ditch company - who's responsibility it is to get irrigation water to their customers - local residents who enjoy the trees - Boulder parks and open space who want to keep area for rec.). [cobirds] Boulder County Audubon meeting: A Big Year with Sandy Komito 1/28 7:30pm
Tuesday, January 28, 7:15 p.m. Boulder Unitarian Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Avenue, Boulder In 1998 Sandy Komito set the record for the most birds ever seen by one observer in North America in a single year: 748 species. His feat was described in The Big Year book and movie. During his 1998 big year, Sandy spent 270 days in the field and logged 275,000 miles. He also completed a record-setting big year in 1987 (722 species). He is currently striving to photograph at least 700 species of North American birds, a number he has already exceeded. Sandy will talk about his adventures, show photos of some of the rarer birds he has encountered, and set the record straight about what really happened during that imaginatively-portrayed 1998 big year. [cobirds] Colorado Gap Analysis and Baird's Sparrow
Birders, In addition to the Colorado's terrific Breeding Bird Atlas and eBird, another good source for predicting potential breeding habitats for Colorado birds is the Colorado Gap Analysis Land Cover Maps, created by an analysis of Landsat imagery. While the Gap analysis vertebrate maps are a little too broadly modeled to be useful for breeding birds, the predicted land cover vegetation maps are quite useful, especially the Graminoids (grasses) and Forbs (non-woody plants). This shows up nicely for tall and mid-grass prairies in Elbert and El Paso Counties, matching up nicely with the uplift and resulting higher moisture levels of the Palmer Divide (the natural boundary between the Platte and Arkansas River drainages). Along with a fair amount of ranches in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) enrollment, these counties have habitat suitable for mid- and tall-grass bird species. In 2008, a small population of Chestnut-collared Longspurs were discovered breeding in mid-grass prairie east of Calhan Highway along Judge Orr Road in El Paso. A Baird's Sparrow was also observed here singing in planted CRP grasses, but was considered migratory as additional visits failed to turn up this individual after it was first observed in mid-May. The continued rainfall pattern will make these areas worth searching next spring. Elbert County will be a good destination too. Finding breeding Baird's Sparrows would be a long shot, but a worthy coup. :) Link to the Gap Analysis: http://ndis1.nrel.colostate.edu/cogap/veggapfrm.html Good Birding! Scott E. [cobirds] ebird portals
Hi All, Not to beat a dead horse, but regional portals come more from a research-based approach (rather than a purely birding approach, although that is an important component). Within portals local ornithologists and experts provide site specific information, present regional projects, or encourage proper ebird and research documentation of special status birds being monitored by local agencies or NGOs within the portal's area of interest. Another example portal provides a gathering place for the next generation of birders and ornithologists, the Young Birders Network. CFO's county site is a fantastic resource. But it shouldn't be confused for an ebird portal where local conservation or species specific research can be implemented and fostered by scientists looking to generate regional data. Cobirds has never been a very good conservation venue. It's an excellent RBA and current sightings listserve. Will Colorado or a subset of the state ever have a portal? Unknown, unless Cornell and a local partner (say RMBO) identify the need or interest for one. Alas the amazing variety of ways of participating in birding would be enhanced, not diminished by a regional or state ebird portal. Happy Fall! Scott E.
