to give up WiFi but it does everything else I need and works with Mac.if
it sounds reasonably clear I could live with it.

Any chance that problem isn't the phone but the carrier limiting the

Good point. I would bet that it has everything to do with limited
bandwidth. Unfortunately, this is the package that is sold by the
vendor, so both elements tend to get the blame. I'm sure that Nokia
makes a great phone but if it's bandwidth is throttled back so much
that it can't operate, then it becomes worthless.

You may have misplaced requirement.  Few people enlarge greater than 4x6
for ordinary purposes, fewer still make prints at all from images created
with their phones.  The end-use of mobilphone images usually is
screen-quality viewing, that standard is very much lower. Phone images are
a convenient way to address that impulse, which comes mostly from
capturing souvenir.  If you wish to make display prints, you are indeed
best advised to use a regular digital camera.

True if you take crummy pictures.

I took a not-so-good camera on a trip once. I regret that I now can't make good
prints of my best pictures. I have a few 4x6s up on the wall, but it is not the
same, not what I want, and there is nothing to do about it.

Quality may vary, but they seem to get fairly good reviews.

MP is not a good indicator of quality. I have a 2MP with a good lens that
takes fine pictures that print well up to 8x10. The pictures I took with
a 5MP with a crummy lens are a disappointment.

At what price? I understand that we are talking 3-4 times what we
pay over here for those phones, plus you need to figure in the exchange rate.

Prices are comperable. My cousin (in Italy) was dying to get one and was
convinced that he could get a better deal in the USA. After looking at
the various terms and conditions we discoverd that the price was about
the same. After all, the people who set the prices do have brains and do
know what you may be up to. The main reason to get one in Europe is to
have it unlocked from the start.

Currenct wise, yes, you should probably wait until the administration in

In Belgium there is only GSM service on networks operate in the 900 MHz or
1800 MHz bands. Some countries (including Canada and the United States) use
the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands because the 900 and 1800 MHz frequency bands
were already allocated*.

In the time I spent in the EU this summer, I was able to connect using the
900/1800 bands and use sms and wap but never achieved connection using 3rd
party (operamini) browser on the razrV3 (GPRS) nor the samsung sync (EDGE)
...I am told the US uses 1900 for that and the EU is 2100 but have no
reference for that.

In some countries such as Belgium, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Pakistan,
and Malaysia, all phones are sold unlocked. However, in Belgium, it is
unlawful for operators there to offer any form of subsidy on the phone's
price.*

Most of them. In France and Belgium it is illegal to lock phones. In
Italy carriers are not allowed to subsidize phones so there is little
reason to lock. TMobile (Germany) sells unlocked iPhones. There is also a
big gray market in iPhones. Lots are sold at retail by stores that are
not authorized.

is it to surf?

It was to surf and do email without having to also buy a data plan

29.95 for web and email per month??? Come on

Check out Samsung, I know it is a Windows based phone but I think

Also note Palm is coming out with a centro style phone that will be
Windows (palm 800?)

I loved my palm, 700W but no wifi, and a bit clunky. (I still have

The iPhone has a SIM card slot that can be accessed with the traditional
Apple special tool. It doesn't have a memory card slot, and that's the
big deal breaker. Most other phones in the same class have memory card
slots. The iPhone is fine for local use, but I wouldn't want it to be my
only phone for travel.

Why would that be a deal breaker? It doesn't have a crank in the front
either. You can readily transfer data using a USB cable. What's wrong
with USB? I use USB with my PDA all the time. It has a memory stick slot
too, but I used that so rarely that I gave it away.

I have a hard time thinking that you can get a good camera into a
good phone. The resulting appliance would be too bulky and too big.

Lenses are the key. Any good camera has good lenses. Cheap lenses
give you bad results. To put a good set of lenses into a phone would
require a decent amount of room, making the resulting product either
very bulky, or very odd shaped.

Furthermore, we have 2 att fones (my trusty old razrV3 original model and
my wife's spiffy new samsung sgh-a707 sync ...it's red!!) ...she uses none
of the features at all except the camera and calls ...she had me shut off
voicemail and internet and messages... I use everything sadly only GPRS
...both are quad band. We went to the EU recently and ATT cheerfully
(yes, cheerfully) sent detailed and simple email to unlock the 2 phones
which went fine without a hitch. In the EU we simply went into a phone shop
and purchased 2 paygo cards (in our case Proximus=like Tmobile) with
minutes. They were working instantly with our phones. We were able to add
minutes (we did it at the supermarket checkout register while shopping) but
one can do it online or via phone if you have a debit card in the EU...we
didn't. My razrV3 could do WAP but I didn't use it much. My wife never did
any of that...both phones did messages with aplomb. We were thrilled. Our
cards are in my desk drawer as they remain active for a year. In the plane,
I stuck the att sims back in and we were able to call our ride from the
line waiting for the passport guy...easy as pie!! ...oh, yeah...reception
was spectacular pegged at 5 bars in little burgs in the backwaters ...in the
area we travelled, only the caller pays, recipient pays nothing...even if
the card is out of minutes, you can get called. You MUST have a quad band
fone for this as the EU uses the 2 other bands not used in the usa!! Set
the thing to auto select the network and you're in business!!

that is unlocked.

One report I saw said a good percentage of the phones sold here and
unlocked and resold over seas at a hefty profit.

Check out the prices for these unlocked Iphones overseas. About 3-5

Thank you Chad. That's most of it--must be unlocked GSM. ATT-only is a serious, and
expensive, limitation for iPhones. The iPhone camera is lame, and it doesn't do video. I
need a new camera. Nokia [and other] phones have 5+ megapixel cameras and do very good
video. That's better than my old Nikon. I don't need a PDA or any fancy apps, just a
calendar with alarms, IM, email. Copy/paste might be nice, but not a deal breaker. A big
deal breaker is that the iPhone doesn't have a card slot--not good for travel.

New unlocked quadband WiFi phones range in price from $300 to $800. Combining the cost of
a new camera with the cost of the phone, the lower midrange price isn't too bad. I'm
waiting for the N79 to be released here.

I'd like to know how smoothly WiFi phones other than iPhone move from WiFi and VOIP to
mobile networks. This is important because I plan to use local or international SIM cards
[maybe with a SIM doubler], and WiFi is an important part of our [basic] budget.

phones. I like the touch-screen, although there are other good WiFi
phones that don't have it.

Does anyone have experience or own a WiFi phone other than the
iPhone? I'm interested in phones that switch automatically from
cellular networks to WiFi networks, can browse the Internet, use IM,
and have good still/video cameras, with a micro card slot, Symbian
OS preferred. Examples are Nokia N-Series [N78, N82, N95, etc.],
Sony-Ericsson G702, Samsung OMNIA, INNOV8, LG KC910.

I'd like something portable for travel that can be used for Internet
instead of carrying a notebook, including the tiny notebooks. We
travel with minimal luggage, usually just carry-on or weekend size
for trips as long as a month. Suggestions?

Re: [CGUYS] WiFi mobile phone

Must be GSM, unless there's a combo GSM/CDMA for the Japanese market.
There are a lot of very good CDMA phones but they're not as versatile
for travel except in the US and Canada.

Betty specify which format. I assume you want GSM.

There have been some decent ones on CDMA, but not many symbian ones.
