-Caveat Lector- The persons who were wearing gas masks also seemed to be wearing a lot of very heavy clothing. This make a great deal of sense. . . . The heavy clothing protected the "protestors" from the variety of "non-lethal munitions" which were used by the Seattle Police. Another advantage to wearing multiple layers of clothing is that they enable very quick changes of appearance. This was a technique perfected in the sixties in response to the practice of police snatch squads dashing up to the edge of a demo, grabbing who they perceived to be ringleaders and quick hustling them back to police lines before the crowd could react. Needless to say, they only grabbed people from the front line. They would never, ever go after anybody two persons in from the edge because they woulda got stomped in the process and knew it. I'm not saying the snatch squads were cowards. They weren't. They were just about the only cops I ever saw at a demo who showed any courage whatsoever. But they weren't fools. Sometimes they got stomped anyhow. Once targeted, a demonstrator may slip into a tight crowd and disappear from police view when only three or four people deep. One guy I heard of once was grabbed on the wrist by a very large plainclothes cop, the head in fact of the local Red Squad. As he stood at the edge of a crowd in a hood and a mask, the cop rushed him up and grabbed him, just like that. This guy aikidoed his way out of it (easy) and ran ten feet into the crowd which opened to let him in. He crouched, took off his mask, hooded sweatshirt and baggy pants and emerged a new man. One minute later was right back in the very same spot on the edge of the crowd in tight jeans and a windbreaker of a different color than the sweatshirt that now lay underfoot and abandoned. The recent study suggesting a link between tofu and brain atrophy [1] calls to attention animal research showing that the soy-phytochemical genistein reduces DNA synthesis in the brain and inhibits the proliferation of brain cells. [2][3][4] That research tends to support the tofu study, for, since cell replication requires DNA synthesis, genistein-induced synthesis reduction leading to fewer new cells could manifest as atrophy. The only counter I've seen is that cell-proliferation physiology does not apply to adult brain cells, since they don't replicate. That claim, however, has been invalidated, for it has been shown that neurogenesis--the replication of new brain cells--appears to occur in the brain throughout life. As Dr. David Amaral told The Washington Post (11/21/99): "A decade ago, we still had the notion that you acquired all the neurons you would ever have by the sixth month of pregnancy... It turns out that nothing could be further from the truth." The Washington Post continued: "Last month, biologists at Princeton University demonstrated that monkey brains constantly produce thousands of new neurons which travel to the cerebral cortex, the center of higher intellectual functions. Earlier studies had documented other examples of neurogensis... The same process occurs in humans. ...researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., found evidence of recent cell division in a part of the brain called the hippocampus in every person studied." [5] Research in animals shows neurogenesis occurs in several areas of the adult brain. [6][7][8] Research also shows that reduced DNA synthesis decreases the number of new brain cells produced. [9] Based on the available data, I would dare to posit that IF in fact genistein inhibits DNA synthesis in the adult human brain as it has been shown to in developing rat brains [2] (and based on human/animal/soy studies, I see no reason to believe the rat/soy-to-human/soy extrapolation is unfounded), it stands to reason that soy products would reduce neurogensis and/or initiate apoptosis (programmed cell death) in the human brain, which could manifest itself as brain atrophy. In short, there's reason to believe the tofu study [1] may be accurate. But Asians Are Smarter A counter argument to the findings in the tofu study [1] is that Chinese and Japanese consume more soy products than other people, and yet they have very-high IQs, and thus don't appear to suffering from a chemically induced diminution of cerebral capacity. Sounds plausible on its face, but it should be considered that if Asians have higher IQs, due to nature or nurture, this does not mean they could not suffer decrements of IQ that would go unnoticed if, despite the decrement, they still exceed the average IQ of non-Asians. In short, a 500-lb man would still be very large even after losing 200 pounds. Another point to consider is that if Asian families care for grandparents more often than in the West, where they may be sent to retirement/nursing homes, such family care might tend to "conceal" the rate of cognitive decline in Asian countries. Another factor to consider is if Asians have been consuming soy for centuries (while it's relatively new to Westerners), then Asians may have inherited immunities to any toxic agents in the foods they consume, since those who food x happens to harm least tend to survive more, passing on their immunities to food-x-toxins to their offspring. In short, Westerners may be more vulnerable to toxins in Asian foods, although I'm not aware of the races of those in the tofu study. [1] Of course I hope what I argue above isn't true, and that soy products ARE the healthy panacea I've always assumed! I've been a vegetarian since I was 13-years old because I believe we need to advance beyond the systematic mass murder sentient beings simply for pleasurable taste sensations. With my refrigerator full of soy stuff, I wish I could be sure now, but until the soy picture gets clearer, the evidence is enough for me to be inclined to err on the side of caution. However, it should be noted that the research indicating an anticancer potential for soy is consistent, and research shows that the cytotoxic properties of soy products are strongly specific, but apparently not entirely exclusive, to cancer cells. -Caveat Lector- In the past, if a book contained "libelous" inaccuracies, the publisher deleted the offending section and re-issued the book in a second edition without those sections. An example that comes to mind is Ed Sanders' "The Family," whose first printing contained a chapter that credited The Process Church of the Final Destruction as influencing Charles Manson's worldview and by implicastion sullied the reputation of the legally-powerful Church of Scientology. The second edition, and all later printings, do not include that "libellous" chapter (which nevertheless I still have in my possession, xeroxed from a first edition found in a used bookstore). That's the way it USED to go. NOWADAYS, however, the ENTIRE book is trashed and public access is denied. (In the UK, government agents searched for even USED copies of "Alternative Three" in second-hand bookstores and went so far as to raid the homes of persons known to possess a copy. I knew one writer in Scotland who had a friend who collected copies after it was "withdrawn." An armed ATF-style team kicked in the door of his garage, seized stacks of the book, and departed, without arresting him or even apologizing ..) Rather than doing as before, publishers meekly kowtow to the threats of lawyers in the pocket of the political Powers That Be. Yet the process of re-typesetting and reprinting a book is easier and less costly than it used to be -- But pulping an entire first run of a "controversial" book without re-issuing it --even at the cost of LOSING PROFITS (!)-- is so much more HELPFUL to the agenda of our Orwellian wannabee "information czars" .. It is my understanding that there are five copies of the Septuagint in
various hands over the world. I've seen one copy with my own eyes about 20
years ago. These seem to reflect what is written, to the "T", in what is
commonly called the King James Bible.
The KJV translators did not rely on the Septuagint, which is a
frequently iffy Greek translation of ONLY the Old Testament, often
disagreeing with the Hebrew original.
(And I just happen to have on my shelves the full text of the Septuagint in
the original, and a word-for-word literal translation into English, plus a
concordance for its Greek.)
The Septuagint as it has come down to us includes numerous textual
interpolations --made apparently by early Greek-speaking Christians-- and
deliberate MIS-translations of the Hebrew found without exception in OLDER
texts of the Old Testament.
The KJV committee used the "Textus Receptus," a combination of the five
most authoritative MSS. of the NEW Testament [in existence up to the 16th
Century, that is -- more were found LATER in history] in Greek, compiled by
Dutch churchman Erasmus a century before, and the canonic ("Masoretic") text
of the OLD Testament in HEBREW.
Along with more than a little guidance in noting how St Jerome far
earlier translated both of those languages into Latin ...

And why are we to presume that neither Abraham nor Sarah were typically swarthy as other semitic people are? Historically, it can all be proven by Biblical history, for those who are willing to do the research, and not listen to what some man says about it. Even taking the Bible as unerring history, does not justify the presumption that Abraham, Sarah, Mary or Jesus were of a lighter complexion than their fellow semites... Banks will NOT lose track of who has what deposited where Again, if everyone follows this advice, they will actually bring about the very thing they fear... Again, my concern is NOT for the freaking ponzi scheme market. Those who lose money in the market should try earning their own money as opposed to extracting the profits from the efforts and production of others. I'm talking about hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people following your advice in the next two and a half weeks, and making a run on the banks plus selling out on Wall Street...which would bring about a financial crash to make 1929 look like a children's tea party... And thereby bring about the very thing you fear...not by any software glitch, but by your own stupid panic... Wall Street, like banks, has been compliant for a long time... Missing million raises German sleaze specter By Douglas Busvine BERLIN (Reuters) - The scene could have come out of a low-budget thriller. Three men meet in a supermarket parking lot in Switzerland. One, an arms dealer, hands over a suitcase with a political ``donation'' of one million marks ($520,000). One of those who receive the money runs an accounting firm that handles payments for Germany's then-ruling party, the Christian Democrats (CDU). The other is the party's treasurer and a long-serving aide to the then-Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The 1991 donation came from a German defense company that had just received government approval to export 36 armored cars to Saudi Arabia, which was seeking to boost its armed forces following the Gulf War. But the money never arrived in the party's coffers. And now, eight years later, Germany's scandal of the missing million threatens to blow up into the kind of affair that has shaken political life and decimated the political caste in some other European countries in recent years. All the ingredients are there: tenacious prosecutors, an inquisitive press, angry voters and nervous politicians. ``This case is of the highest intransparency,'' Michael Wiehen, head of the German chapter of anti-corruption campaign group Transparency International, told Reuters. ``It confirms the public's impression that the party has ridden roughshod over it.'' KOHL ADMITS COMPLICITY Kohl, who dominated the CDU as party leader for a quarter of a century before he was ousted in last year's general election, admitted this week that he ran secret accounts to fund his conservative party but left much more unsaid. His dramatic confession of complicity in the political funding scandal prompted Germans to demand more details and left his party racing to contain any electoral backlash. Last week Kohl told the Reichstag the charges were ``slander'' and called for a quick parliamentary inquiry to clear his name. But former aides confirmed revelations by prosecutors and reporters digging into what could be Germany's biggest scandal since the notorious ``Flick'' affair of the 1980s. It started harmlessly enough when Augsburg state prosecutors launched a tax investigation into the affairs of former CDU treasurer Walther Leisler Kiep, whom they initially suspected of pocketing the million marks. But it turned out that Kiep had paid some of the money to a party worker who was retiring -- and who even paid tax on the bonus. Horst Weyrauch, the accountant accompanying Kiep to the parking lot rendezvous, said he received an additional share. The rest, prosecutors suspect, was kept by Kiep, who was in financial trouble after getting a hefty legal bill for his successful defense in a trial linked to the Flick affair -- a scandal in which the leading political parties accepted illicit donations from a German industrialist. The investigation exposed the CDU's practice of using secret trustee accounts to launder cash donated anonymously and then distribute it to buy the personal loyalty of local party chiefs to Kohl, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily said. Under German financing rules, the name of anyone donating more than 20,000 marks must be published in party accounts. Of 218 million marks the CDU raised in 1997, only 34 million came from donations. We are irrevocably deadlocked, not withstanding readbacks of testimony and looking at exhibits,'' the note to Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Ronald Zweibel said. David Sandy, 44, a partner of Simmons Simmons, among London's largest law firms, was charged with concealing the business diary of the chief executive at BCCI. He was also accused of conspiracy for allegedly trying to keep the CEO's business diary from a grand jury investigating the bank. BCCI was charged with massive fraud, drug money laundering, bribery and illegally acquiring U.S. banks. Losses to depositors and creditors were estimated at $10 billion. The bank pleaded guilty to laundering drug money in 1990. A year later, regulators shut the bank down. The bank had operations in 70 countries with major centres in London, Abu Dhabi and the Caribbean banking haven of the Cayman Islands. Sandy represented the bank's majority shareholders in London, including members of the royal family of the United Arab Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi government agencies. In April, after a seven week trial, jurors deadlocked after three days of contentious deliberations and a mistrial was declared. The retrial began Oct. 25. Private banking, established for catering to those with minimum investable assets of 1 million dollars, offers an all-inclusive, personalized money management service including investment portfolio management, financial planning advice, custodial services, bill payment and fund transfers. Such services almost always involve a high level of confidentiality about customer information, a feature that makes private banking attractive to moneylaunderers. ''Private banking is attractive to those (drug smugglers and other criminals) because it sells secrecy, the very service a moneylaunderer wants,'' said Sen. Carl Levin, a Michigan Democrat. When Raul Salinas, the brother of then Mexican President Carlos Salinas, became a client of Citibank in 1992, Amy Elliot, the New York bank's Mexico team leader, was named his relationship manager. U.S. agents crack $29-mln mortgage fraud in Florida MIAMI (Reuters) - A Florida fraud ring that included a mortgage lender, a loan officer and a real estate appraiser secured more than $29 million in fraudulent mortgage loans by duping banks and lenders, U.S. authorities said Thursday. The suspects misrepresented the value of properties they were buying and used collusive ``straw buyers'' to flip the real estate at inflated prices, according to a 45-count federal indictment stemming from a 19-month investigation code-named ''Operation Flipper.'' Nine suspects were charged with violations of U.S. wire fraud laws, conspiracy, making false statements to banks and money laundering. Some of the charges carry maximum sentences of 30 years in prison and fines up to $1 million. The group's alleged ringleader, James Christenson, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, contracted to buy more than 200 properties and assigned the properties to another suspect, Howard Kratenstein, 36, of Fort Lauderdale, before closing, the indictment alleged. The plotters misrepresented to lenders the risks involved in the properties, officials said. Some of them were boarded-up buildings or multifamily apartments that would be subdivided without the approval of local authorities. Christenson had a property appraiser value the real estate at inflated prices and forwarded the appraisals to First Financial of Boston, Inc., where suspect Stanley Lerner, 67, of Fort Lauderdale, a mortgage loan officer, prepared fraudulent credit files for straw buyers, the indictment alleged. The properties would be ``flipped'' to the collusive straw buyers who were provided with fake tax returns, income statements, pay stubs, bank statements and other background information. Authorities said the fraud scheme stretched from Homestead to Lake Placid, an area including much of south Florida. Many of the properties are now in foreclosure, raising concern about the scheme's impact on the mortgage industry. ``Mortgage fraud has become so pervasive that regulators and prosecutors are now turning the spotlight on what we believe is a systematic mortgage lending problem,'' said Brenda Liberti, director of the Florida Department of Banking and Finance. ``We are serious about curbing fraud because left unchecked this climate will jeopardize the existence of affordable mortgages in South Florida,'' she said. PRELIMINARY ISSUES Before engaging in an examination of Isaiah 53 itself, some preliminary issues must be considered. First is the issue of circular reasoning. Even if we interpret the chapter as the Christians do (forgetting for a minute the mistranslations and distortions of context which will be noted below), the most that could be said is this: Isaiah 53 is about someone who dies for the sins of others. People may have seen Jesus die, but did anyone see him die as an atonement for the sins of others? Of course not; this is simply the meaning which the New Testament gives to his death. Only if you already accept the New Testament teaching that his death had a non-visible, spiritual significance can you than go back to Isaiah and say, "see - the Prophet predicted what I already believe." Isaiah 53, then, is in reality no "proof" at all, but rather a contrived confirmation for someone who has already chosen Christianity. Second (and consistent with all Jewish teaching at the time), Jesus' own disciples didn't view Isaiah 53 as a messianic prophecy. For example, after Peter identifies Jesus as the Messiah (Matt. 16:16), he is informed that Jesus will be killed (Matt. 16:21). His response: "G-D forbid it, lord! This shall never happen to you" (Matt. 16:22). See, also, Mk. 9:31-32; Mk. 16:10-11; Jn. 20:9. Even Jesus didn't see Isaiah 53 as crucial to his messianic claims - why else did he call the Jews children of the devil for not believing in him before the alleged resurrection (Jn. 8:39-47)? And why did he later request that G-D "remove this cup from me" (Mk. 14:36) - didn't he know that a "removal of the cup" would violate the gentile understanding of Isaiah 53? And third, even if we accept the gentile Christian interpretation of Isaiah 53, where is it indicated (either in Isaiah 53 or anywhere else in our Jewish Scriptures) that you must believe in this "Messiah" to get the benefits? B. CONTEXT Since any portion of Scripture is only understood properly when viewed in the context of G-D's revelation as a whole, some additional study will be helpful before you "tackle" Isaiah 53. Look at the setting in which Isaiah 53 occurs. Earlier on in Isaiah, G-D had predicted exile and calamity for the Jewish people. Maybe not normally willing, but able nonetheless. :-) But it's not, at least as far as banks are concerned... In my specific case, you are correct, but then I haven't kept my money in banks for about ten years now. In general, however, I would need lots of superior data before retracting my original statement. And, yes, I have a 'natural' bias against banks. Actually, the media is feeding the Y2K paranoia... Not any media that I am exposed to; the media in this area of the country have only recently given any serious treatment to this issue. If you are referring to the Internet mdia specifically, then you might have a point. And I didn't say anything about government propaganda...in my opinion, we are at good risk of 'someone' using Y2K as an excuse to institute martial law, and your type of posts, which encourages "Chicken Little" thinking, is just the thing to bring it about. While I am in FULL agreement with your analysis of the potential for martial law, I doubt very seriously that any protective action people may take on the basis of having read my posts will precipitate even a minute ripple in the social fabric. Thanks for over-estimating my power of public pursuasion though :-) But as far as banks are concerned, they've been dealing with Y2K issues for years (consider: mortgages, consumer loans, long-term moneymarket accounts)... Aren't these examples of banks having protected the means of their own revenue? I find the absence of any cited measure to protect the funds of individual customers interesting. I do believe you in these cases though. Even in a worse case scenario, people will be able to walk into their local branch on Monday, Jan. 3rd, go up to a teller, and withdraw funds from their accounts. Perhaps and then perhaps not, but then not having my money in banks, I can afford to speculate. Not everyone is so fortunate. If I did have my money in banks, *I* certainly wouldn't take the risk threatening my or my family's survival. Banks routinely back up their data. Every December 31st, they also do a full system backup which is stored. They do this every year, and Y2K won't be any different. Banks will NOT lose track of who has what deposited where Here's hoping you are correct, but I hope you can understand that I place less trust in financial institutions than I do in my own motives. :-) I'm talking about hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people following your advice in the next two and a half weeks, and making a run on the banks plus selling out on Wall Street. As we shall see, targeted persecution on the basis of ethnicity was not confined to Germany during the war, nor is Serbia guilty of the worst of offenses since the Nazis by a long margin. Yet respectable opinion proclaims that the US has battled against the dark forces of ethnic persecution throughout its history. Such rubbish can not be taken seriously. Concerning Serbia: we now know that there was no "ethnic cleansing" in Kosovo prior to the US-lead attack; that such displacement of civilians as actually took place was stimulated by US actions. The unprovoked US offensive ended in peace terms perhaps less generous than might have been reached at the negotiating table. The NATO occupation forces now administer a territory where mass killings and "reverse" ethnic cleansing of Serbs is rampant-a return to the historic persecution of the Serb minority, as described in the 1980s in several New York Times accounts. It's a small price to pay in a blatant move to coopt the traditional Russian sphere of influence, off limits to US planners for the duration of the Cold War due to the deterrent factor presented by the Soviet Union. The US record on ethnic cleansing is considerably less sanguine than media accounts would have it. In fact, the US holds the distinction of perhaps the first wholesale ethnic cleansing in the history of Christian Europe. But the US government's record extends back to the extermination of the American Indian, and the forced displacement of survivors to reservations. In fact, the US government has spent the better part of this century complicit in campaigns of genocide, ethnic cleansing, and terror, often, though not always, conducted through proxy governments. Client states that deal in terror targeted at minority populations raise no eyebrows in Washington as long as their governments toe the State Department line. Indeed, US-backed regimes with longstanding records of active persecution of minorities remain beyond criticism. Only when they lose their usefulness do their crimes become worthy of our attention. Remorse for US involvement in these crimes, if expressed at all, occurs after the actions no longer support US objectives. Examples are numerous. Strategic concerns prohibit us from noticing the ongoing persecution of the Kurds in Turkey, a state that also moved harshly to expel its Armenian minority early in the century. Terror against the Kurds peaked during the Clinton administration, when deaths were consistently reported in the many thousands each year. Over a million Kurds have reportedly been displaced. By Clinton's second year, Turkey's repression of the Kurdish population had shot to record levels. In America, only a few leftists made note of the fact that in 1994 Turkey was "the biggest single importer of American military hardware and thus the world's largest arms purchaser." US aircraft was subsequently used to destroy Kurdish villages. US arms continued to flow to the Turkish government despite press revelations. The only talk of US military action in Turkey revolved around the use of Turkish soil to continue the almost decade long war against the civilian population of Iraq. As things heated up in Yugoslavia, that conversation shifted to the use of Turkish aircraft to bomb Serbia. Humanitarian concerns remain irrelevant. Terror with a racial slant is old hat for more direct US military operations. In Guatemala, US-trained and directed death squads and military units (often the same) were responsible for tens of thousands of deaths prior to the Reagan years, when terror reached new and even more obscene heights, marked by wholesale massacres in the Indian highlands. Since the 60s when the US engineered a military takeover of the country, torture, disappearances, and political murders have been supported and administered as an response to the threat of "communists". In practice, this meant not only teachers, community organizers, and priests, but simple Indian peasants living in poverty. In the 80s, political killings mounted monthly, cheered on (literally) by neoconservative Republicans. Examples of US involvement in terror applied indiscriminately to a general population are numerous and give the lie to State Department crowing about human rights. Laos is a representative example, where displacement was less an objective than wholesale destruction of an entire society. During the period of US "non- involvement," the US air force dropped more bombs on a peasant society than on Germany and Japan combined during the Second World War. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who witnessed the test, said Russia ``will use all diplomatic and military-political levers in its disposal,'' to confront Western opposition. Putin's comments came in a speech to military officers at the Plesetsk launch pad in northwestern Russia, after the successful test-firing of a Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile. The missile was launched from Plesetsk and flew across Russia, hitting its target on the Kamchatka peninsula, some 3,400 miles to the east. ``The diplomatic levers are clear, and as for military ones, Tuesday's successful launch of the Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile is one of them,'' Putin said, according to Russian news agencies. Putin's warning followed last week's tough statement from President Boris Yeltsin, who reminded President Clinton that ``Russia is a great power that possesses a nuclear arsenal.'' Yeltsin was reacting to U.S. criticism of the Chechnya campaign. Putin at the time sought to moderate Yeltsin's statement, saying that Russia and the United States have good relations, but his statement Friday sounded as harsh as Yeltsin's. ``No one can accuse the government of inappropriate use of anti-terrorist measures in Chechnya, call Russia an aggressor or an occupier,'' Putin said. The United States and other Western nations have criticized Moscow for excessive use of force in Chechnya, causing civilian casualties and the exodus of over 230,000 refugees. ``Some nations and blocs under cover of international organizations are interfering into affairs of independent states, and trying to speak to them in the language of force,'' Putin said. ``We are not used to such language, since Russia has a nuclear shield.'' Putin also warned the United States against trying to modify the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty to build anti-missile defenses. Washington says such a defense system is intended to protect the United States from possible missile attacks by rogue nations and wouldn't be capable of deflecting a massive nuclear attack of the kind Russia is capable of launching. But Moscow dismisses the argument and warns that attempts to amend the treaty could trigger a new arms race. The Russian military has said that fitting multiple warheads to the Topol-M missiles would be a part of Moscow's response if the United States walks out of the treaty. Russia is pinning the future of its missile program on the Topol-M. Most of its other long-range missiles are either past their service lifetime or will have to be dismantled if the country ratifies the START-II nuclear disarmament treaty. As we have seen, George Stephen and Donald Smith were combining their involvement in the Manitoba with leadership of the Canadian Pacific project. Here was an idea whose political and nationalistic time had come; virtually every Canadian public figure stood behind it. It required mobilizing every dollar that a capital-short Canada could yield. And so Stephen and Smith had to sell small blocks of 1,000 or so from their Manitoba holdings (probably about 25,000 shares each), shifting the proceeds into the Canadian Pacific venture. Such sales of course depressed the price of Manitoba stock, and this troubled Hill and Kennedythough there was little they could do about it, aside from discussing the issue with Smith and Stephen. The two Americans understood that their Canadian associates had little choice but to support the Canadian Pacific. The question was how to avoid the chaos inherent in unpredictable sales to unknownand very possibly ill-intentionedbuyers. For the market was extremely "thin," i.e., sales of relatively small amounts result in highly volatile prices. As the leader in financing the Manitoba, Kennedy faced a corollary problem: how to use such "unreliable" stocks in securing loans? Certainly the bankers were impressed by the Manitoba's long-term prospects. But it was risky for them to accept as collateral a stock so unpredictable and wide-ranging in price as to create difficulty should a loan happen to go bad. Witness Hill's statement to Kennedy in September 1882 that he was unhappy about the increase in Manitoba stock to 165 because large blocks were being sold; he preferred steadier, consistent prices at around 150-55.[1] The predictable occurred. On 10 October, Kennedy sold 1,100 shares of Stephen's stock. These-and other-sales pushed Manitoba stock down, with Kennedy suggesting to Hill in late October that the fluctuations would continue so long as it was uncertain at what intervals and in what amounts the Canadians would try to market some of their holdings. And this Stephen and Smith, driven by the inherently unforeseeable requirements of the Canadian Pacific's construction crews, did not themselves know. As Kennedy later wrote, the large Canadian holdingswhich might be sold at any momenthung over the Manitoba like the sword of Damocles. In effect, events were in the saddle, and men could only ride.[2] Inevitably, news of these sales reached the press, and Kennedy complained that, despite his best efforts, this had a bearish effect on Manitoba stock. He proposed listing it on the London Stock Exchange: the broader the market, the less the Manitoba stock would become the plaything of speculators.[3] Kennedy and Hill were working closely together, buying and selling on joint account to try to stabilize the Manitoba stock price and thus retain control. In January 1883, for example, Kennedy decided to cease buying unless the price declined two or three points. Hill readily deferred to his judgment: "In regard to the purchase of stock, I can hardly advise you, but ... I am satisfied to do as you think best, being on the ground and able to judge from day to day."[4] Without informing Hill, however, Kennedy had kept this trading secret from his junior partners in J. This consists of a readiness to be deceived and a tendency to construct alibis for oneself; once one has been conditioned long enough by the right combination of pressure and propaganda, he has become so receptive and malleable that all will to resist disappears. During the 1930s, Nazi Germanys rise to totalitarian power was well under way. Warning signs of the terror to come was being felt by increasing numbers of people. Among them was a young woman of great courage and insight. Charlotte Beradt recorded and collected peoples dreams about the Nazi governments domination of their lives; dreams that tell of the painful political realities of the emerging Nazi State. In his essay at the conclusion of the volume, published in 1966, Bruno Bettelheim remarked that it was a shocking experience reading this book of dreams and seeing how effectively the Nazis murdered sleep, forcing its enemies to dream dreams that showed that resistance was impossible and that safety lay only in compliance. The following dream was dreamt by a man in his 30s living in Berlin during the early years of Nazi rule. It demonstrates the potential of our dreamworlds to produce stories that reflect the psycho-political conditions under which we live. Something within us is registering these disturbing vibrations and sending out signals of danger to the frightened conscious mind. The author of the dream was told by the Nazi authorities to report to the Berlin Railway Station on a Sunday morning to collect money for the Party. Before leaving he said to himself, What the heck, I wont be bothered. So he brought along a pillow and blanket no collection box and took it easy. After about an hour Hitler appeared, wearing high patent-leather boots, dressed as a comical cross between a circus clown and a lion tamer. The dreamer watched Hitler use exaggerated, artificial gestures to win the hearts of schoolchildren. Then he adopted a stern attitude as he lectured a group of older boys and girls. At last he turned to impress a group of old maids by acting coquettish. Suddenly the dreamer began to feel uncomfortable under his blanket. He grew afraid that Hitler would notice that he had no collection box he might be recognized as one of the group of those who pretend to sleep. If caught, he imagined confronting Hitler and telling him that he doesnt approve of concentration camps. Hitler continued his appearances around the station with different groups of people, and the dreamer was amazed to see that no one seemed to be afraid of him. He noticed that someone even kept a cigarette in his mouth while talking with him, and many more were smiling! After completing his stint at the station, he picked up his pillow and blanket and went down the main stairway in the station. Then the dreamer saw Hitler standing at the top of the stairs, concluding his appearance with a song from the imaginary opera, Magica, making extremely theatrical gestures, which had the crowd mesmerized. Everybody applauded. He bowed and then went tearing down the stairs, looking foolish in his purple trousers and holding his trainers whip. Hitler passed by with no bodyguards and stood in line at the cloakroom like everyone else, waiting patiently to get his coat. At this point the dreamer thought, Maybe hes not so bad after all. Maybe I neednt take the trouble to oppose him. All at once he realized that instead of a pillow and blanket, he was carrying a collection box. This dreamer sees Hitler as a manipulator par excellence an animal trainer and yet the big act that Hitler puts on works in the end: the dreamer begins to feel that things are not half bad and maybe he doesnt have to worry about Hitler after all. Winston Smith, sipping his Victory Gin with tears of gratitude in his eyes, reached a similar conclusion about Big Brother, although he got there by a different route. The average person struggling with their conscience in the face of dehumanizing conditions, is, like Orwells hero, a hero who is basically neither good nor bad, up against the effects of a political system which in the end leaves open but one direction in which he can move the one toward the movement. Individuals are embedded in a repressive psycho-political system, unable to act independently or resist the forces that are propelling the motion of society in the direction of Nazi domination. In a herd of wild horses there's a king stallion. Once in a while a young stallion is born bigger than the others. Immediately upon his attaining full growth, the king stallion gives him battle. Whichever one wins inseminates the herd. Darwin saw this as the way in which nature contrives to keep the strongest strains going. This battling for herd kingship is operative amongst almost all species of animal herds as well as in the "pecking order" of flocking bird types. I'm sure that amongst the earliest of human beings, every once in a while a man was born much bigger than the others. He didn't ask to be-but there he was. And because he was bigger, people would say-each in their own esoteric language-"Mister, will you please reach one of those bananas for me, because I can't reach them." The big one obliges. Later the little people would say, "Mister, people over there have lost all of their bananas and they are dying of starvation, and they say they are going to come over here and kill us to get our bananas. You're big-you get out in front and protect us." And he would say, "OK," and successfully protect them. The big one found his bigness continually being exploited. He would say to the littles, "Between these battles protecting you, I would like to get ready for the next battle. We could make up some weapons and things." The people said, "All right. We'll make you king. Now you tell us what to do." So the big man becomes king quite logically. He could have become so in either a bullying or good-natured way, but the fact is that he was king simply because he was not only the biggest and the most physically powerful but also the most skillful and clever big one. Every once in a while along would come another big man. "Mr. King, you've got things too easy around here. I'm going to take it away from you. A big battle ensues between the two and after the king has his challenger pinned down on his back, he says, "Mister, you were trying to kill me to take away my kingdom. But I'm not going to kill you because you'd make a good fighter, and I need fighters around here to cope with the enemies who keep coming. So I'm going to let you up now if you promise to fight for me. But don't you ever forget-I can kill you. OK?" The man assents, so The King lets him up but instinctively the king says secretly to himself, "I mustn't ever allow two of those big guys to come at me together. I can lick any one of them, but only one by one." The most important initial instinct of the most powerful individual or of his organized power structure is. "Divide to conquer, and to keep conquered, keep divided". So our special-case king has now successfully defended his position against two or more big guys who are all good fighters. He makes one the "Duke of Hill A," the second "Duke of Hill B," and the third "Duke of Hill C," and tells each one to "mind your own business" because "only the king minds everybody's business," and he has his spies watch them so that they can't gang up on him. Thus, our considered king is doing very well in his tribe-defending battles. However, there are a lot of little nonfighting people who are not obeying the king regarding preparations for the next fighting period. The king says to his henchmen, "Seize that mischievous little character over there who is really being a nuisance around here." To the prisoner the king says, "I'm going to have to cut your head off.' The man says. "Mr. King, you'd make a big mistake to cut my head off." The king asks, "Why?" "Well, I'll tell you, Mr. King, I understand the language of your enemy over the hill, and you don't. And I heard him say what he is going to do to you and when he's going to do it." "Young man, you've got a good idea at last. You let me know every day what my enemy over the hill says he is going to do and so forth, and your head is going to stay on. In addition, you're going to do something else you've never done before. You're going to eat regularly right up here in the castle near me. And I'm going to have you wear a royal purple jacket (so that I can keep track of you)." The king now has that little man under control and useful. Then another little man makes trouble for the king. As he is about to be beheaded, he shows the king that he under stands metallurgy and can make better swords than anybody else. The king says. "You better make a good sword in a hurry." The man makes a beautiful, superstrong, and sharp sword-there's no question about that. So the king says, "OK, your head stays on. You, too, are to live here at the castle." -Caveat Lector- We have learned in the last decade from our behavioral science studies that aggression is a secondary behavior of humans-that when they get what they need, when they need it, and are not overwhelmed, they are spontaneously benevolent; it is only when they become desperate that they become aggressive because what they have relied on is no longer working. There are two kinds of social behavior manifest today around the world the benign and the aggressive. It is probable that this dichotomy occurred in the human-versus-animal confrontation in the ice age time. When an ice age starts to recede, the horsemen start north-hunting with clubs and spears. At the same time, moving much more slowly, we have the beginnings of great tribes of humans following their flocks of goats and sheep as the latter lead them to the best pastures-sometimes high on mountainsides, sometimes on great plains. With the big man as king-the head shepherd-we have humanity migrating off into a wilderness that seemed to have no limits. The land belonged to the Great Spirit. The people lived on the flesh of their animals and the encountered fruits, berries, nuts, and herbs. They kept themselves warm with clothing made of the skins of the animals and also with environment-controlling tents made of local saplings and the animal skins. We have a king shepherd, from the day of the giants, tending his people and his flock, when along comes a little man on a horse, with a club hanging by his side. He rides up to the king shepherd and, towering above him, says, "Well, Mr. Shepard, those are very beautiful sheep you have there. You know, it's very dangerous to have such beautiful sheep out there in the wilderness. The wilderness is very dangerous." The shepard responds, "We've been out in the wilderness for generations and we've had no trouble at all." Night after night thereafter sheep begin to disappear. Each day along comes the man on the horse. He says, "Isn't that too bad. I told you it was very dangerous out here. Sheep disappear out in the wilderness, you know." Finally there is so much trouble that the shepard agrees to accept and pay in sheep for the horseman's "protection" and to operate exclusively within the horseman's self-claimed land. No one dared question the horseman's claim that he owned the land on which the horseman said the shepherd was trespassing. The horseman had his club with which to prove that he was the power structure of that locale; he stood high above the shepherd and could ride in at speed to strike the shepherd's head with his club. This was how, multimillennia ago, twentieth-century racketeers' "protection" and territorial "ownership" began. For the first time little people learned how to become the power structure and how thereby to live on the productivity of others. Then there came great battles between other individuals on horses to determine who could realistically say, "I own this land." Ownership changed frequently. The ownership-claiming strategy soon evolved into horse-mounted warfare as each gang sought to overwhelm the other. Then the horse-mounted gangs, led by a most wily leader, used easily captured hu- man prisoners to build them stone citadels at strategic points. Surrounded by prisoner-built moats rigged with drawbridges and drawgates, they would come pouring out to overwhelm caravans and others crossing their domains. "Deeds" to land evolved from deeds of arms. Then came enormous battles of gangs of gangs, and the beginning of the great land barons. Finally we get to power-structure mergers and acquisitions, topped by the most wily and powerful of all-the great emperor. This is how humans came to own land. The sovereign paid off his promises to powerful supporters by signing deeds to land earned by the physical deeds of fighting in shrewd support of the right leader. Thereafter emperors psychologically fortified the cosmic aspect of their awesome power by having priests of the prevailing religions sanctify their land-claiming as accounted simply either by discovery or by arms. In another set of events that opportuned the power structure the land barons discovered the most geographically logical trading points for caravaning: a place where one caravan trail would cross another caravan trail; where, for instance, the caravaners came to an oasis or maybe to a seaport harbor and transfer some of their goods from the camel caravans to the boats. The caravaners would say, "Let's exchange goods right here. Fine. You need something; I have it." One day they're exchanging goods when along comes a troop of armed brigands on horseback. The head horseman says, "It's pretty dangerous exchanging valuable things out here in the wilderness." caravaners' leader says, "No, we never have any trouble out here. We have been doing this for many generations." Then their goods begin to be stolen nightly, and finallyb the merchants agree to accept and pay for "protection." That was the be-

-Caveat Lector- As already mentioned in our Introduction, it was in 1805, 200 years after the founding of the East India Company, that the British won the Battle of Trafalgar, giving them dominance of all the world's lines of supply. They now controlled the seas of the world. It was said by world people that the British Empire became the first empire in history upon which "the sun never set." In order to get their gold off the sea and out of reach of the pirates, the British made deals with the sovereigns of all the countries around the world with whom they traded, by which it was agreed from then on to keep annual accounts of their intertrading and at the end of the year to move the gold from the debtor's bank in London to the creditor's bank in London to balance the accounts. In this way they kept the gold off the ocean and immune to sea pirate raiding. This brought about what is now called the "balance of trade" accounting. The international trading became the most profitable of all enterprises, and great land-"owners" with clear-cut king's "deeds" to their land went often to international gold moneylenders. The great land barons underwrote the building of enterprisers' ships with their cattle or other real wealth, the regenerative products of their lands, turned over to the lender as collateral. If the ship did come back, both the enterpriser and the bankers realized a great gain. The successful ship venturer paid the banker back, and the banker who had been holding the cattle as collateral returned them to their original proprietor. But during the voyage (usually two years to the Orient and back to Europe) the pledged cattle had calves, "kind" (German for "child"), and this is where the concept of interest originated, which was payable "in kind"-the cattle that were born while the collateral was held by the banker were to belong to the banker. When the Phoenicians shifted their trading strategy from carrying cattle to carrying metal money, the metal money didn't hai'e little money- "kind"-but the idea of earned interest persisted. This meant that the interest was deducted from the original money value, and this of course depreciated the capital equity of the borrower. Thus, metallic equity banking became a different kind of game from the original concept. In twentieth-century banking the depositors assume that their money is safely guarded in the vaulted bank, especially so in a savings bank, whereas their money is loaned out, within seconds after its depositing, at interest payable to the banker which is greater than the interest paid to the savings account depositor and, since the metal or paper money does not produce children-"kind"-the banker's so-called earned share must, in reality, be deducted from the depositor's true-wealth deposit. The merchant bankers of Venice came to underwrite the Venetians' (the Phoenicians') voyaging ventures. Such international trade financing swiftly became the big thing in the banking game. The "Merchant of Venice"- Shylock and his "pound of flesh forfeit" of the debtor-was Shakespeare's way of calling attention to the fact that the bankers' "interest" was in reality depleting the life-support equity of both the depositors and the borrowers. It was the financing of such international voyaging, trading, and individual travel as well as of vaster games of governmental takeovers that built the enormous wealth-controlling fortunes of early European private banking families. It was under analogous circumstances of financing inter-American-European trade that, in the late nineteenth century, J. P. Morgan becamea man of great power. By having his banking houses in Paris and London, Philadelphia and New York, he was able not only to finance people's foreign vtravel, all their intershipment of goods, and to give letters of credit, but also to finance and control major "new era" railroading, shipbuilding, mining, manufacturing, and energy-generating enterprises in general. Such powerful banking gave insights regarding the degrees of risks that could be taken. The people doing the risking came to the banker for advice. In such a manner 1. P. Morgan developed the most powerful financing position in America, as society went from wooden ships to steel ships and the concomitant iron mining, blast furnace building, and steel rolling mill development, as well as the making of boilers and engines, electric generators, and air conditioning systems. To better understand the coming of world power structure into North American affairs, we will switch back from the nineteenth to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to the opening up of North America and the American socioeconomic scene. The European colonization occurred in anal major ways. The Spanish way was accomplished with vast haciendas-grants from the king to powerful supporters. The hacienda development began in Central America and Mexico and expanded northward into California. The British king also gave vast

-Caveat Lector- The reasons for the Great Crash go back to the swift technological evolution occurring in the U.S.A. between 1900 and the 1914 beginning of World War I and the U.S.A's entry into it in 1911. Most important amongst those techno-economic evolution events are those relating to electrical power. Gold is the most efficient conductor of electricity, silver is the next, and copper is a close third. Of these three gold is the scarcest, silver the next, then copper. Though relatively scarce, copper is the most plentiful of the good electrical conductors. Copper is also nonsparking and therefore makes a safe casing for gunpowder-packed bullets and big gun shells. As a consequence of these conditions, in the one year, 1917, more copper was mined, refined, and manufactured into wire, tubing, sheet, and other end products than in the total cumulative production of all the years of all human history before 1917. With the war over all the copper that had been mined and put into generators and conductors did not go back into the mines nor did it rot. World War I was not an agrarian, but an inanimate-energy and power-driven, industrial-production war-with the generating power coming from Niagara and other waterfalls as well as from coal and petroleum. For the first time the U.S.A. was generating power with oil-burning steam turbines. When the war was over, all this power-production equipment was still in prime operating condition. There was enormous potential productivity-a wealth of wealth-producing capability that had never before existed, let alone as a consequence of war. The production capacity that had been established was so great as to have been able to produce, within a two-year span, all those ships, trucks, and armaments. What was the U.S.A. economy going to do with its new industrial gianthood? It was the vastness of this unexpected, government-funded production wealth and its ownership by corporate stockholders that generated many negative thoughts about the moral validity of war profiteering. There were many desirable and useful items that could be mass-produced and successfully marketed. Young people wanted automobiles, but automobiles were capital equipment. In 1920 capital equipment was sold only for cash. There were enough affluent people in post-World-War-I U.S.A. to provide an easy market for a limited production of automobiles. In 1920 there were no bank-supported time payment sales in the retail trade. The banks would accept chattel mortgages and time payments on large mobile capital goods, such as trucking equipment, for large, rich corporations. Banks would not consider risking their money on such perishable, run-away-with-able capital equipment as the privately owned automobile. Because the banks would not finance the buying of automobiles and so many money-earning but capital-less young people wanted them, shyster loaners appeared who were tough followers of their borrowers when they were in arrears. Between the ever-increasing time-payment patronage and the affluent, a market for automobiles was opening that could support mass production. In 1922 there were about 125 independent automobile companies. They were mostly headed by colorful automobile-designing and -racing individuals for whom most of the companies were named. They survived by individually striving each year to produce an entirely new and better automobile, most of which were costly. Many accepted orders for more than they had the mechanical capability to produce. Their hometown financiers would back these auto-designing geniuses so that they could buy better production tooling and build larger factories. Wall Street sold swiftly increasing numbers of shares in auto companies. More and more of them went broke for lack of production, distribution, and maintenance experience on the part of the auto-designer managements. In 1926 the Wall Street brokerage house of Dillon, Read and Co. made a comprehensive cost study of the auto-production field. They found that 130,000 cars a year was, in 1926, the minimum that could be accounted as mass production and sold at production prices. Any less production had to carry a much higher price tag. To warrant the latter, the cars had to be superlatively excellent. The English-built Rolls-Royce brought the highest price on the American market. There was fierce competition among Packard, Peerless, Cadillac, Pierce-Arrow, Locomobile, Lozier, Leland, and others for the top American car. All of those premium cars' frames, bodies, engines, and parts were manufactured within their own factories. There were several in-between classes, such as that of the Buick. Most of the 100 or so cars in this intermediate range were assembled from special engines, frames, and other parts made by independent manufacturers. The mortality in auto companies was great. Dillon, Read led Wall Street out of its dilemma by buying several almost bankrupt companies, closely located to one another, such as

-Caveat Lector- To accomplish their restartings in all areas of the U.S.A. economic system the New Deal also set up the Works Progress Administration (to get people jobs) and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (to get the big industries going Amongst the first of the New Deal's emergency acts of 1933 was the establishment of the Works Progress Administration, which provided jobs for approximately anyone who wanted them-artists, mathematicians, etc., as well as all white- and blue-collar workers and, of course, all day laborers and such. Then, pressed by the labor unions and the political urge to avoid the characteristics of socialism and get the heretofore unemployed millions off WPA-the New Deal's Works Progress Administration-the government financed new buildings and granted mortgages for longer and longer periods to encourage people to undertake the production of much-needed homes and other buildings. It must be noted that the rejuvenated building industry was reset in motion as a concession to the building trades and a move to Increase employment, not as a much-needed evolutionary advance in the art of human environment controlling. The unions were so strong as to be able to push the New Deal very hard in the direction of resuming only yesterday's multifoldedly inefficient "one-off" building design techniques and materials as the activity in which they could establish maximum employment. Technically ignorant bank officers became the authorities who alone judged the design validity of the structures and architectural acceptability of the building projects, funds for the building of which they authorized as mortgage-secured loans of their bank depositors' money. The New Deal went on to rationalize its strategic acts by arguing to itself, "In order to continue as a nation we must have our national defense. Since it is established that there is nowhere nearly enough life support to go around in this world, if we don't have a formidable national defense, we're going to be successfully attacked by hungry enemies. Our national defense can't carry on without steel and the generation of electricity, the production of chemicals, and other imperative industrial items." The FDR team soon concluded that the industries producing those absolute "defense" necessities were to be called our "prime contractors." The prime contractors must be kept going at any cost. "So we'll give war-production orders to the prime contractors to produce such-and-such goods. The contractors with signed government contracts can then go to the banks and borrow the money to pay their overhead and to buy the materials and power and to pay the wages to produce the goods. Then we the government will pay the producers for those finished goods and services, and they can pay off their loans from the bank. The money paid by the prime contractors as wages will give people buying power, which will allow them to start other economic production systems going." This became a monetary irrigation system (still in use today in 1980 U.S.A. affairs), which works at a rate providing about ten recirculations in a year following upon each major war order initiated by and paid for by the government. In the depths of the Depression in 1932, when you could buy a meal for five cents and the finest of shins for one dollar, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation went much further. It gave U.S. Steel $85 million worth of new rolling equipment (in 1980 U.S. currency that would be close to a billion dollars), etc., etc. The U.S.A's Reconstruction Finance Corporation had a secondary government machinery-owning outfit that loaned all these prime contracting companies new equipment with which to fill their government orders. What tha New Deal did in fact was to socialize the prime contractor corporations instead of the people. This hid the fact of socialism from the world in general. Socializing the prime contractor corporations indirectly benefited the people themselves. In this way the New Deal seemingly didn't give money to the corporations-just orders. The U.S.A.-established and -financed RFC loaned the prime contractors all the money they needed to buy all the equipment. But in the end the government rarely collected on the loans and finally just forgave the machinery borrowers altogether, selling them the equipment for very low "nominal" sums. The New Deal had also pledged itself at outset to take care of the "forgotten man." The government voted minimum-wage limits of a substantial magnitude. The economy was going again. People were getting more and more jobs-how many depended upon how many prime contracts the government gave out. World War II was clearly looming ahead. The New Deal said, "We have to be prepared" ... and their "preparedness" ordering increased. Jobs increased rapidly. Empty buildings filled. There were a number of great corporations whose businesses had practically stopped by 1933, but those businesses had now been set in healthy

But given his recent experience at the hands of federal prosecutors, Sanders has decided to take some extraordinary precautions. Why? Because, when he penned 1997's The Downing of TWA Flight 800, the Clinton Justice Department went after everybody associated with the book's publication in search of evidence against Sanders and his wife Elizabeth. In an outrageous breach of his First Amendment guarantees as a working journalist, Sanders was convicted last year of conspiracy to remove evidence from the Calverton, Long Island, hanger where wreckage of TWA 800 had been reassembled. A TWA employee had voluntarily given Sanders seat fabric from the plane, which he promptly subjected to lab analysis. Tests revealed rocket fuel residue, suggesting that a missile had brought down the ill-fated Boeing 747 just minutes after it took off from JFK International. Because Mrs. Sanders had spoken by phone several times with her husband's source, she was prosecuted as well. The author gave NewsMax.com a preview of his new book's acknowledgments: "The last time I wrote an acknowledgment to thank those who touched my life in some meaningful way during the investigation of government wrongdoing was March 1997 as The Downing of TWA Flight 800 went to press. -Caveat Lector- The Wall Street lawyers explained to Eisenhower the prevailing new psychology of affluence and convinced him that the new affluent majority would elect a Republican. Thus they successfully persuaded him to be a Republican. With the healthy economy the new wage-earner capitalists, with a vested interest in maintaining the status quo, readily voted for Eisenhower on the Republican ticket. Eisenhower's Wall Street lawyer-managers cxplained to him that he had been able to win the war because of the vision, courage, and ingenuity and the productive power of American free enterprise. They convinced Eisenhower that "the U.S.A. is, in fact, free enterprise." They also convinced him that the Democrats' New Deal was socialism and therefore the inherent enemy of free enterprise. As soon as the Wall Street lawyers had Eisenhower in office in 1952, they instructed him to break loose all the economic controls of the New Deal. They had him cut all price controls, all rent controls, all interest-rate controls; they had him terminate anything that was stymieing the making of big money by big business. For instance, they persuaded Eisenhower to allow the insurance companies to invest their vast funds in common stocks. Before Ike's liberation of the insurance companies they were allowed to put their funds only in "Class A" bonds and similar investments. Cheered by the capitalist-owned sector of the press, his Wall Street lawyer-advisors for a long time had Ike feeling like a great liberator. The Wall Street lawyers' grand strategists put the Wall Street lawyer John Foster Dulles in as Ike's Secretary of State to dictate the American foreign policy of "Soviet containment," and Foster Dulles's Wall Street lawyer brother Allen Dulles was put in as head of a new brand of absolutely invisible, U.S.A-financed, capitalistic welfare department, the CIA, established ostensibly to cold-war-cope with the secret-agent operations of our enemies. So secret was their operation that the people of the United States and its Congressional lawmakers had no idea of the size of the unlimited funds given to the CIA, nor for what those unknown funds were expended. The CIA and Allen Dulles had a U.S.A-signed blank check for X amount of money to do X tasks. I call the CIA, "Capitalism's Invisible Army." The great U.S.A. corporations, having been saved in 1933 by being only "unilaterally socialized," and having in the subsequent fifteen years become powerfully healthy from enormous war orders, immediately after Eisenhower's election started escalating prices. Their logic was that the first corporation head to increase prices in a given field of production would be the first to be able to distribute that"upping"~profits to his stockholders thereby to gain for himself greater economic management status and personal wealth. As a long-time student of foreign investment I saw a pattern developing. Between 1938 and 1940 I was on the editorial staff of Fortune magazine as its science and technology consultant, and my researchers harvested all the statistics for Fortune's tenth-anniversary issue, "U.S.A. and the World." In that issue I uncovered and was able to prove several new socioeconomic facts-for the first time in the history of industrial economics: (I) the economic health of the American-or any industrial-economy was no longer disclosed (as in the past) by the total tonnage of its product output, but by the amount of electrical energy generated by that activity; tonnage had ceased to be the criterion because (2) we were doing so much more given work with so much less pounds of materials, ergs of energy, and seconds of time per given function as to occasion ever newer, lighter, and stronger metallic alloys, chemicals, and electronics. Though at that time universally used as the number-one guide to the state of economic health of any world -nation, tonnage no longer represented prosperity. The amount of energy being electrically generated and consumed became the most sensitive telltale of economic health. Furthermore, I was able in that issue to study carefully all the foreign investments made in America all the way back to its colinization in the early seventeenth century. The ramifications of my studies in foreign investments in Amenca and elsewhere are wide. An example of my findings included discovery of the swift, post-American Revolution investment in U.S.A. ventures by the British (East India Company-advised) financial world as already mentioned. I found a similar situation to be existent in World War U. As head mechanical engineer of the U.S.A. Board of Economic Warfare I had available to me copies of any so-called intercepts I wanted. Those were transcrtptions of censor-listened-to intercontinental telephone conversations, along with letters and cables that were opened by the censor and often deciphered, and so forth. As a student of patents I asked for and received all the intercept information relating to strategic

-Caveat Lector- Today's (1980) world-power-structures struggle is one between the U.S.S.R. and big capitalism, which we now call lawyer capitalism, which deliberately took the world's private-enterprise corporations out of the fundamental jurisdiction of America. They have kept their U.S.A. operations going in a seemingly normal way, so people in U.S. America haven't realized that these companies are officially situated elsewhere despite the incredible amplification of those great corporations' annual profits, whose annual totals payable to these corporations' stockholders are of the same magnitude as the annual increase in the U.S.A.'s joint internal and external debt increases. Amenca is utterly bankrupt externally in terms of balance of trade due to its own oil companies now operating as Arabian business. The national debt at the time of the New Deal was $33 billion-which was the cost of World War I. Before World War I we frequently had no national debt whatever. We have today a national debt that exceeds $800 billion-30 percent of that indebtedness came from underwriting of ever-longer-term mortgages. In 1934 the U.S.A. underwrote a completely obsolete building industry while Eisenhower allowed the banking world to make an incredible amount of money in interest rates and services (in 1978 over Si billion just for transferring home-ownership deeds) in support of the building and real estate game, which building industry-if it were any good-would pay the U.S.A. back handsomely. The U.S.A. cannot even pay the annual interest on its $800 billion national debt. That is why the Nixon presidency and all those since have had to enter each year with a negative budget, acknowledging that at year's end the U.S.A. will be a $100 billion-magnitude unrecoverably deeper in debt. Our foreign-trade-balance indebtedness is (as of September 1979) $104 billion ($86 billion if foreign branches of U.S. banks are taken into account). Sum-totally, what has been taken from the people of the U.S.A. runs into many trillions of dollars. In the quarter of a century since Eisenhower America has become completely bankrupt, with its world leadership, its financial credit, and its reputation for courage, vision, and human leadership gone. None of this was the American people's doing. It was all done in an absolutely legal but utterly invisible manner by the lawyer-capitalism. Individual bankers, industrial-corporation officers, et al. have had to do what their lawyers told them to do. No bad people have been involved. The lawyers were following their survival instinct -and doing so completely legally. Everything we have reported here has been published at one time or another, but with the individual items often so far apart from the last relevant item that the public has tended not to remember and associate the items. As a consequence the total picture presented here is approximately unknown to any but the Wall Street lawyers' grand strategists, most of whom are no longer alive. One of my earliest books was Nine Chains to the Moon, written in 1935 and published by Lippincott in July 1938, and now being published by Doubleday. In it I referred so frequently to Finance Capitalism that I developed a contraction of those two words into FINCAP. FINCAP had died a lingering death between 1929 and 1934. In this book, Critical Path, I refer so often to the lawyer-resurrected "capitalism" that it is appropriate to refer henceforth to LAWCAP. LAWCAP's "capitalism" is paradoxically the most highly socialized organization in all history-the citizens of LAW- CAP's welfare-state--the whole body of corporate stockholders-having an annual average dole of $100,000 per capita without their even having to make a pretense of getting a job. If we take the billions of dollars given in the 1930s to the great U.S.A. defense-industries corporations by the New Deal's Reconstruction Finance Corporation . . if we take the hidden tax-deduction subsidies to do research, development, and advertising given to all these companies in pre- 1942 dollars between 1933 and 1980. . if we take the $100 billion in foreign aid that paid for the overseas establishment of the great corporations ... if we take the $155 billion of atomic know-how and development taken over by the oil companies.., and if we take the number of fine ounces of gold bullion taken out of America exclusively by the capitalist world's banking system . . . and if we take a reasonably low estimate of the unknown billions of dollars taken out of the U.S.A. by the CIA to operate exclusively on be- half of international capitalism without the knowledge or authority of the people of the U.S. of America's quasi-democracy. . . and if we multiply the sum of the foregoing figures by twenty-five, which is the amount to which our present U.S.A. dollars have been depreciated between the time of the appropriations and January 1, 1980, we come to a figure in the magnitude of $6 trillion that has been legally

NOBLE [I] n one of the largest studies of its kind ever conducted, researchers have found that the drug Ritalin, the subject of sharp debate for three decades, was more effective than behavior-modification therapy in treating children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The researchers, who worked at six sites around the country in teams assembled by the National Institutes of Health, said that adding the behavioral therapy to Ritalin treatment was no more effective than the drug alone. But they said they found that about 70 percent of the children they studied also turned out to have problems like depression and anxiety. In those cases, they said, behavior therapy provided significant benefits, especially when used in combination with the Ritalin. The results, reported in the current issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, were discussed at a news conference today at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Dr. Peter S. Jenson, a child psychiatrist at Columbia and a senior adviser to the N.I.H. who directed the project, said the results were "the first real information on comparative treatments over the long term." Dr. James T. McCracken, the director of child and adolescent psychiatry at the Neuropyschiatric Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles, who was not involved in the research, called the study a landmark and said it proved the benefits of treating hyperactive children with a stimulant. "As a child psychiatrist, it is still surprising that Ritalin remains as controversial as it is," he said. "One hopes that this study will put some of the controversy to rest." Dr. William Carey, a child psychiatrist at the Children's Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, said that while he had no criticism of the study, Ritalin is overused, adding, "Do you give it to a child who talks incessantly in line?" The drug should be reserved for real brain disorders, he said. One of the most recent battles over the drug took place last month when the Colorado Board of Education moved to discourage teachers from recommending behavioral drugs like Ritalin and urged school personnel to use discipline and instruction instead to overcome problem behavior in the classroom. The action was said to have stemmed from fears that such drugs were related to violence among children, although medical scientists say there is no evidence of that. Its side effects, which include headaches and loss of appetite, are reported as minor and reversible. The N.I.H. researchers studied 579 children over 14 months. The children, who were 7 to 9 years of age, were given long and detailed examinations, Dr. Jensen said. About 80 percent were boys. The children were divided into four groups for treatment: those receiving Ritalin alone; those receiving intensive behavior management therapy alone; those receiving a combination of the two, and those receiving whatever treatment was standard for their community. The researches found that among the children who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but not the other psychiatric disorders, Ritalin brought improvement in their conditions when it was used alone, regardless of whether it was accompanied by other therapy. They also found that Ritalin and the intensive behavior therapy used in combination were the most effective when used for the children with psychiatric problems that went beyond attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The Balkan Stability Pact and the European Army
The reason we really went into Kosovo remains a mystery. I know, I know, it was
to look after the Albanians who were denied their political rights. The fact
that we made a complete mess of looking after any of the rights of the Kosovan
Serbs, Gypsies or even Albanian Catholics is purely down to the incompetence of
some of the most professional soldiers in the world. It has nothing to do with
the racism of our noble allies in the KLA. The comparative insouciance shown
towards the Chinese for their treatment of the Tibetans, or the Turks because
of their treatment of the Kurds is purely due to the complex situations here,
as if anything was clear cut in the Balkans.
ECONOMICAL WITH THE TRUTH
Is there an economic rationale to this adventure? This is unlikely, for the
simple reason that the Balkans will not pay. Most reconstruction, for example,
is actually being paid for by the American and European taxpayers. Together
with the cost of recruiting and stationing troops, this is going to be an
enormous economic drain. Some individuals and companies, like Cecil Rhodes in
British Africa, are bound to make a killing (sorry) but as a whole it is going
to run at a loss. Someone, somewhere, is bound to mention oil pipelines, please
dont. As far as oil pipelines go, Chechnya is far more important, and we are
not intervening there, yet.
THE LIE MACHINE
Nevertheless, the clinching fact that lays the humanitarian lie is the by now
well documented fact that all the propaganda NATO fed us about a humanitarian
tragedy is false. The promised mountains of bodies are strangely absent. Now we
are told that three thousand bodies have been discovered, but more may be on
their way, with unexhumed sites and people taken to Serbia. I would even say
fewer bodies might be on their way, as these are all bodies found. It does not
account for the Serbs, KLA fighters, victims of NATO bombing raids and even
those who died of natural causes all of whom would be present there. NATO
knew it was lying, and manufactured (or at the very least vastly exaggerated) a
humanitarian catastrophe, and then went on to create a real humanitarian
tragedy. As the British Government MP, Tam Dayell said, "Where did the Russians
get the idea that high level bombing might be a way of conducting a modern
war?" If it was a genuine humanitarian catastrophe, all NATO needed to do was
tell the truth; NATO refused to tell the truth; so, NATO wanted this war for a
different reason. What was the reason?
MY FIRST CONSPIRACY THEORY
I think that the reason we went to war in the Balkans was the time-honoured
reason for all forms of evil, the European Union. Now you are going to say, not
again. Just as he was beginning to talk about conspiracies and Kosovo, up pops
his far less sexy obsession with the EU. Bor-ing. Hear me out. The EU wants the
nations of the Balkan region to sign a "non-aggression" pact. Most nations want
to sign this pact, but a few do not. So, with the backing of their American
allies they coerce one of the few remaining recalcitrant powers into
submission, and provide a graphic example of the follies of resisting the
Balkan dimension of the New World Order.
THE INSTABILITY PACT
The Belgian Empire does not call the Balkans protectorates or anything like
that. What it says is that nations who wish to receive foreign aid and wish
even to think of applying to join the EU must join the Stability Pact. The
applicant country agrees to accept European legal norms and European policy
decisions (for example they accept the Euro) in return for well aid.
Nevertheless, why would politicians in Bulgaria, Serbia or Albania do this sort
of thing? To put it bluntly it is a business decision. In Bosnia, which seems
to be a model for most of this neo-colonialism, foreign aid does not reach the
genuinely needy until the various politicians get considerable finders fees.
Bosnian politicians can be sacked at will because they are not servants of the
people but servants of the occupying powers. It is rather a shock to the West
to come across a politician, like Milosovic, who has his own private sources of
wealth and his own agenda.
BY THE FRUITS, YOU WILL KNOW THEM
Look at the results thus far, the Macedonians are given a clean bill of health
after rigging their elections. Croatia runs a relatively clean election and the
West responds with warnings that an HDZ reelection will not be accepted under
any circumstances. Serbia is bombed for ethnic cleansing, while the KLA is
given the mildest slap on the wrist. Kosovo and Montenegro take up the
Deutschmark, and Bosnia shadows it. Serbian towns are given aid if their
councils oppose Milosovic, while the Bulgarian governing party, thanks to
plentiful foreign aid, is more corrupt and repressive than their communist

The military mission, according to the Pentagon, is to "provide support" to the FBI, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Secret Service and other government agencies responsible for security there. The military specialists are in place largely to provide expertise and assist in coordinating a federal response in the event of a terrorist attack during such a high-profile event. According to Defense Department documents obtained by CNN, 131 U.S. Army, 27 U.S. Air Force, and eight U.S. Navy personnel were sent to Seattle to perform roles from ordnance disposal to standing by for possible chemical or biological attack by terrorist groups. Four special forces troops from the Joint Special Operations Task Force were deployed to Seattle to be on hand to advise FBI "crisis support" agents in the event of a catastrophic terrorist event involving chemical or biological weapons or hostage taking. Two of the four special operations experts have since left the city, according to an informed Pentagon official who spoke on the condition that he not be named. Fifty-five military Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, along with 25 explosive-detecting dogs and their handlers, were sent. The soldiers are "operating in civilian attire -- keeping a low presence," the Defense Department documents say. Troops there are from various military fiefdoms including the U.S. Special Operations Command, the U.S. Forces Command, the U.S. Army Biological-Chemical Command, the U.S. Air Force Security Forces Command and the U.S. Joint Forces Command. Eight divers, making up two Navy dive teams, were sent to provide support to the Secret Service for President Clinton's visit, which ended Thursday. The action is not unusual for presidential security. The Department of Health and Human Services and FEMA have set up a "staging area" for their operations at the U.S. Naval Reserve Center-Lake Union in Seattle. Eight military personnel are assigned to that site. The HHS-FEMA site is pre-positioned to respond to major health catastrophes such as a biological agent attack, according to a well-informed source. Which, if any, of these military personnel and their equipment/munitions were actively involved in situations dealing with American Citizens? What specific role did these military personnel and their equipment/munitions have in situations dealing with American Citizens? It also raises the very serious question as to why police were allowed to roam the streets with authority to use deadly force if necessary without proper identification? Were some of these unidentifiable police in actuality military personnel and is this the reason they refused to give proper identification when asked? Victory At WTO Meeting In a major setback for the biotech industry, negotiators at last week's World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle were not able to move forward in establishing rules for exporting US genetically engineered crops to other countries. At the WTO meeting, the announced number one priority for the US Trade team was agriculture. US Trade negotiators wanted to knock out subsidies to European farmers, and open foreign markets for US grown genetically engineered crops. US Trade negotiators failed on both accounts. The WTO sets the rules for trade for its 135 nation participants. Most major countries including the European Union (EU) are requiring more answers to unknown health and environmental risks of genetically engineered foods before accepting them into their country. Additionally, countries like the EU, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea have put forth labeling requirements for genetically engineered foods. The US Department of Agriculture and the US Trade Office have dismissed objections to genetically engineered foods in other countries as not being based on "sound science" and potential "barriers to trade." The US was hoping to negotiate with other countries and set up a framework for opening up markets for US genetically engineered foods. Early in the meetings, there appeared to be a major victory for the US Trade team, when the EU proposed putting together a working group on genetically engineered crops. Such a working group increased the chances that many of the controversial issues surrounding genetically engineered crops would be decided based largely on economic considerations. OCA and other environmental and consumer groups would like to see the issue of genetically engineered foods settled within the United Nations Biosafety talks - which are more likely to take into account potential environmental and human health risks in formulating an international protocol. Governments will gather next month in Montreal to resume the U.N. Biosafety talks. But by the end of the WTO meeting, the EU proposal on the working group was withdrawn and declared dead by a delegate from France. An alternative EU proposal for a broadly focused biotechnology working group that would consider consumer and environmental concerns was rejected by U.S. negotiators as unacceptable. The complaint, filed in Chester County Court of Common Pleas, alleges SmithKline Beecham (NYSE: SBH - news), manufacturers of the widely touted LYMErix vaccine, failed to warn doctors and the general public that nearly 30 percent of the population was pre-disposed to a degenerative autoimmune syndrome, which the lawsuit says is triggered by contents of the inoculation. ``Once this autoimmune reaction is triggered, it cannot be cured and can only be treated symptomatically for the remainder of the vaccine recipient's life,'' the complaint says. According to the class action, SmithKline (SBH) used high concentrations of a surface protein called OspA as the foundation for its vaccine. When bitten by a Lyme infected parasite, humans are not exposed to OspA protein. The levels of OspA that enter the bloodstream at any phase of the three-dose LYMErix vaccine, however, place patients classified by genetic type HLA-DR4+ at risk of developing a condition referred to as ``treatment-resistant'' Lyme Arthritis, the lawsuit says. Despite this ``well documented relationship'' between OspA and treatment-resistant Lyme Arthritis, SmithKline neglected to include the information in its widely disseminated promotional literature and insisted LYMErix was safe and generally well tolerated, the class action says. About one-third of the general population is HLA-DR4+ and risks contracting the arthritic condition when exposed to the vaccine, according to the complaint. The HLA-DR4+ trait is easily detected by a routine blood test; however, SmithKline never recommended that doctors screen for the trait before administering the vaccine, the lawsuit alleges. The complaint further alleges that patients who are infected with Lyme bacteria when they receive LYMErix -- whether asymptomatic or in the early stages of infection -- could suffer symptoms more progressive and enhanced than if they had not received the vaccine. SmithKline, the class action says, also neglected to inform doctors and the general public that periodic booster shots beyond the series of three vaccinations would be necessary to maintain immunity to the disease. The class action includes counts of negligence, unfair trade practices and a bid for medical monitoring of those who are placed at risk of developing autoimmune arthritis but have not yet been diagnosed with the condition. The class action complaint was filed by Stephen A. Sheller and Albert J. Brooks Jr. of Sheller, Ludwig Badey in Philadelphia. Sheller said that in the wake of filing the class action, he expects to file claims on behalf of individuals who received the LYMErix vaccine and are now suffering from the autoimmune arthritis. Another search warrant was executed at a bank but no details were released of that operation. The 37 charges include kidnapping a 14-year-old, two counts of homosexual intercourse by a teacher, five counts of buggery, two of attempted buggery and 22 counts of indecent assault on a male. Strike Force Oakville was established by the CPEA on October 28 to investigate allegations of child sexual assault involving the teacher at a Sydney high school between 1964 and 1999. Either way, not much good has come of eight years of Western "aid" to Russia and uncritical support for the group of free-marketeers around President Boris Yeltsin. by JACQUES SAPIR * _ Many Russians believe that the West's attitude to their country since 1991 has been geared, consciously or unconsciously, to undermining their country. This applies at the level of both national governments and international organisations. The conspiracy theorists find confirmation of their view in the policies that have been recommended to the Russian leadership by a succession of high-handed foreign official experts since the winter of 1991. Their view was even more thoroughly confirmed by the economic crash of August 1998, particularly with the pressure for "reforms" coming from Western governments just at the time when Russia's financial institutions were collapsing. The Nato intervention in Kosovo added still further to their sense of being victims of a conspiracy and this is now reflected in Russia's new "military doctrine", revealed to the world in October, which takes a decidedly anti-Western stance (1). This reading of the world is indicative of a country in which people have no control over their destinies. The greater the gap between the authorities and society, the more such theories flourish. However, in this context the conspiracy view fails to tell the whole story. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was initially set up as a way of helping capitalist countries through temporary balance of payments crises. It then became a prime mover in promoting liberal economic policy worldwide, and in late 1991 was given a key role in the business of channelling aid to Russia. It had no expertise in dealing with so-called "transitional" societies, let alone in resolving their crises. In its view, it had a scientific approach that was both infallible and universally applicable. As a result, in its handling of the issue of aid for Russia, it simply used its habitual concepts and means of intervention. In Russia, as in its dealings with other countries, the IMF made a priority of reducing inflation and cutting budget deficits, whatever the consequences. This meant adopting monetary and fiscal policies that ignored the very particular social and monetary circumstances in which businesses were operating, in the carry-over from the Soviet period. The deflationary drive succeeded, but at the price of a demonetarisation of the economy, a collapse of the tax base, and a freeing-up of the economy which in turn resulted in capital flight, the criminalisation of part of the Russian economy and the development of a purely speculative finance market around Russia's treasury bonds (the GKO). This monetary policy also led to an overvaluation of the rouble - a four-fold rise between January 1993 and December 1996 - which had disastrous consequences for Russian industry. The Asian crisis of 1997 and Russian crisis a year later provided a rude awakening. The crisis is still not past, and anyone who followed the violent differences of opinion between IMF economists and the World Bank in September-October 1998 would be tempted to think that the former had been overcome by a kind of scientific autism. True, the IMF's managing director Michel Camdessus made the notable admission that his organisation had contributed to creating an "institutional desert in an ocean of lies" in Russia (2), before announcing his resignation on 9 November. However, while remorse and admissions of guilt may have value in the confessional, they have little value in the business of economic policy, any more than they have in politics. In many instances Washington has played a determining role in decisions made by the G7 and the IMF. Their strategy has been a mixture of objectives that have been fixed and initiatives that have been more or less uncoordinated, a result of the progressive fragmentation of the decision-making process within the United States itself. Now, according to three anthropologists, it is time to toss such hidebound clichés of Paleolithic woman on the midden heap of prehistory. In a new analysis of the renowned "Venus" figurines, the hand-size statuettes of female bodies carved from 27,000 to 20,000 years ago, the researchers have found evidence that the women of the so-called upper Paleolithic era were far more accomplished, economically powerful and sartorially gifted than previously believed. As the researchers see it, subtle but intricate details on a number of the figurines offer the most compelling evidence yet that Paleolithic women had already mastered a revolutionary skill long thought to have arisen much later in human history: the ability to weave plant fibers into cloth, rope, nets and baskets. And with a flair for textile production came a novel approach to adorning and flaunting the human form. Far from being restricted to a wardrobe of what Dr. Olga Soffer, one of the researchers, calls "smelly animal hides," Paleolithic people knew how to create fine fabrics that very likely resembled linen. They designed string skirts, slung low on the hips or belted up on the waist, which artfully revealed at least as much as they concealed. They wove elaborate caps and snoods for the head, and bandeaux for the chest -- a series of straps that amounted to a cupless brassiere. "Some of the textiles they had must have been incredibly fine, comparable to something from Donna Karan or Calvin Klein," said Dr. Soffer, an archaeologist with the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Archaeologists and anthropologists have long been fascinated by the Venus figurines and have theorized endlessly about their origin and purpose. But nearly all of that speculation has centered on the exaggerated body parts of some of the figurines: the huge breasts, the bulging thighs and bellies, the well-defined vulvas. Hence, researchers have suggested that the figurines were fertility fetishes, or prehistoric erotica, or gynecology primers. "Because they have emotionally charged thingies like breasts and buttocks, the Venus figurines have been the subject of more spilled ink than anything I know of," Dr. Soffer said. "There are as many opinions on them as there are people in field." In their new report, which will be published in the spring in the journal Current Anthropology, Dr. Soffer and her colleagues, Dr. James M. Adovasio and Dr. David C. Hyland of the Mercyhurst Archaeological Institute at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa., point out that voluptuous body parts notwithstanding, a number of the figurines are shown wearing items of clothing. And when they zeroed in on the details of those carved garments, the researchers saw proof of considerable textile craftsmanship, an intimate knowledge of how fabric is woven. "Scholars have been looking at these things for years, but unfortunately, their minds have been elsewhere," Dr. Adovasio said. "Most of them didn't recognize the clothing as clothing. If they noticed anything at all, they misinterpreted what they saw, writing off the bandeaux, for example, as tattoos or body art." Scrutinizing the famed Venus of Willendorf, for example, which was discovered in lower Austria in 1908, the researchers paid particular attention to the statuette's head. The Venus has no face to speak of, but detailed coils surround its scalp. Most scholars have interpreted the coils as a kind of paleo-coiffure, but Dr. Adovasio, an authority on textiles and basketry, recognized the plaiting as what he called a "radially sewn piece of headgear with vertical stem stitches." Willendorf's haberdashery "might have looked like one of those woven hats you see on Jamaicans on the streets of New York," he said, adding, "These were cool things." On the Venus of Lespugue, an approximately 25,000-year-old figurine from southwestern France, the anthropologists noticed a "remarkable" degree of detail lavished on the rendering of a string skirt, with the tightness and angle of each individual twist of the fibers carefully delineated. The skirt is attached to a low-slung hip belt and tapers in the back to a tail, the edges of its hem deliberately frayed. "That skirt is to die for," said Dr. Soffer, who, before she turned to archaeology, was in the fashion business.

Gee, I was in Harvard grad school with both these guys. Wonder what they think of this. Larry Summers, US Treasury Secretary, on Tuesday proposed scaling back the role of the International Monetary Fund to allow the private sector a greater role in providing finance to poorer countries. In a speech given to the London Business School, Mr Summers said the IMF had to reflect changes in the global financial system, and focus on preventing and responding to international financial crises. The US plan is partly a response to the lessons of the Asian financial crisis, but it also marks an attempt to stave off critics in the US Congress who have threatened to cut off funds for the IMF over its multi-billion dollar support for Russia. Mr Summers called on the IMF to focus on its "core competencies" by giving up the provision of long-term finance to countries that ought to be able to use private sector sources. "The IMF cannot expect its financial capacity to grow in parallel with the growth of private sector capital flows," he said. "It should not be a source of low-cost financing for countries with ready access to private capital, or long-term welfare that cannot break the habit of bad policies." Mr Summers said the IMF should concentrate on providing short-term financing for countries threatened by balance of payments problems, financial contagion or market panics. He proposed that the IMF should do more to collect and share financial information, and to disseminate that information to global markets and investors. It should promote better assessments of whether countries are likely to run into trouble, for example by running unsustainable exchange rate regimes. But he said the goal should be for emerging market economies to "reach the point where calling on the IMF for financial support is unthinkable". Other countries' finance ministries were last night studying Mr Summers' speech, but his ideas are expected to get a generally favourable reception. "We have made our own proposals for strengthening surveillance of codes and standards, and greater involvement of the private sector in the prevention and resolution of crises," a UK Treasury official said. The IMF said it had read Mr Summers' proposals "with keen interest". Mr Summers paid tribute to the "imaginative leadership" of Michel Camdessus, outgoing managing director of the IMF, but the signs in Washington are that the US administration would like to see a clear break with his 13-year term. In a valedictory interview with the internal IMF Survey, Mr Camdessus stressed the central importance of poverty reduction to the IMF's mission. Mr Summers has refused to be drawn on US feelings about Mr Camdessus' successor, but it is thought the administration lacks enthusiasm for Caio Koch-Weser, German deputy finance minister. It is of course, of great interest and importance to do whatever may be done to return the FOREST SERVICE to the position of guardian of public interest administering publically owned lands. It may take quite a bit of doing, since the Forest Service has been engaged in assisting politically connected persons to PLUNDER public lands for many years. A step in the right direction would certainly be an immediate cessation of any and all road-building into Publically owned U.S. Forest Service administered lands. While I would have preferred an open forum, the local Forest Service staff was available to answer questions. Here is what I learned. The amount of logging on private and commercial lands is rapidly escalating. (We can no longer count on these lands to be available to support wildlife.) Roadless area designation is not the same as wilderness. In 1972, of the 62 million acres inventoried for RARE II, the agency recommended only 15 million for wilderness status. (Most of this was not the habitat needed by wildlife.) For example, in my area, RARE II roadless areas constitute only 10% of Colville National Forest. Forest roads are one of the major vectors for introducing invasive, non-native plants which compete and sometimes decimate the native plant communities. The Forest Service employees like to use the word "manage." The do not seem to use the word "wilderness" as freely. The Forest Service has requested public comment by December 20th. Urge them to protect all roadless areas by prohibiting activities that may affect the wilderness eligibility of roadless areas including roadbuilding, logging, mining and motorized use. Also, to include all roadless areas, inventoried and uninventoried and not just those greater than 5,000 acres of adjacent to existing designated wilderness areas. If we are to believe the Television media, the protests are over jobs. They have even rolled out some "experts" (like the president of the Economic Strategy Institute, and a spokesperson for the Clinton Administration) who have said that the protests are "bizarre" and based upon the fact that "people are afraid of change." But actually, much, much more is at stake. Surprisingly, the essence of the protests were revealed on Monday when some of the first broadcasts from Seattle featured a huge banner that read: Democracy = WTO And in many ways, this simple banner summarizes the fight, for the very foundations of the Republic are threatened by the WTO. In the history of human civilization, the U.S. Constitution represents a departure from most other forms of government. It places people at the top of an inverted pyramid, with the government's role to serve the people. But things are a changing. Instead of a government for the people, by the people, the WTO is a government for multinational corporations, by multinational corporations. The WTO's "Mandatory Dispute Resolution Process" is one example of how this body can make decisions that supersede national laws and national sovereignty. It is exactly the same model that ICANN has fraudulently instituted in its "Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy." The nations of Western Europe had been at war almost continuously for a generation. Democratic revolutions in America and France had shattered the foundations of divine right monarchy and traditional social hierarchy. At the same time commercial men had outgrown the boundaries of crown empires and mercantilist economies, launching a revolution in trade and industry. By 1800 the interests of free trade and republicanism, empire and monarchy, were being reflected imperfectly in the Napoleonic wars. No member of the Atlantic community could escape the seaborne struggle between England and Francetwo great eighteenth-century powers fighting for control of the new age ahead. Technically neutral but inevitably partisan, Americans were bitterly divided in their support for the French or British cause. Into this war-torn sea, in January 1811 a young Boston woman set sail with two small boys aboard a schooner full of cod, bound for France and reunion with her merchant husband. Besides enduring the hardship and fear that accompanied a transatlantic passage before the age of iron and steam, Margaret Perkins Forbes traversed a battlefield. Intercepted in March by a British warship, the schooner was finally landed several weeks later on a small barren island off the coast of France. From there Margaret Forbes was delivered to Ralph Bennet Forbes; they continued in Europe on business. Late in 1812 the family took up housekeeping in Bordeaux and there, on February 23, 1813, the exiled Margaret gave birth to her third son, John Murray Forbes. The unfortunate child was barely three months old when he endured his own first crossing of the violent Atlantic and was deposited in Boston nearly dead from hardship and the laudanum employed to quiet him. It was an inauspicious beginning.[1] John Murray Forbes was destined to see eighty-five years of the tumultuous century he had entered; he would play an active role in the century of "progress" for seven decades. Throughout his long life he wrestled with the contradictions that marked Napoleon's France at his birth. He perpetuated until his death an eighteenth-century style of business, emphasizing family connection, personal responsibility, and the traditional conservative views of the Boston mercantile clan into which he was born. HOME TO A CRISIS
Forbes sailed from China in December 1836 with a modest fortune ("perhaps
$100,000") and the confidence that he could relax at home before taking up
any new business. When he landed in New York in March 1837, his hope for
domestic peace was shattered by a major financial panic that was sweeping the
commercial world. He fell to work immediately, covering his debts and trying
to salvage Russell Co. The great danger to merchants in this kind of
monetary crisis resulted from the fact that no one in the regular course of
business kept specie on hand to cover a company's total paper debt. Bills and
credits flowed more quickly than merchandise, and the goods usually sold well
enough to make up the balance in time. At the first sign of trouble, however,
prices fell and creditors demanded specie, which sent everyone scrambling for
cash to cover the bills. Half a million dollars in Russell Co. bills were
refused payment by bankrupt houses in London, and Forbes's only hope was that
Baring Brothers would cover the debts. He warned the China house, how ever,
not to make a formal request, since that would obligate them to reimburse
Barings on demand. Patience and a cool temper were crucial now, and he
advised the residents to stay clear of loans to the Hongs, extend no credits
whatever, and begin assembling what cash they could. At home, Forbes beat a
path between New York and Boston, dunning those whose bills had been
protested and arranging a large shipment of ginseng to get funds in Canton
while specie was suspended in America. The Barings did cover Russell Co.'s
outstanding bills throughout the spring, and by July all that remained for
the house to do was to ship money to Barings as quickly as possible."[40]
Russell Co. survived the panic of 1837 because of its solid reputation and
the timely exertions of all the partners. The panic was an intense personal
crisis for Forbes and the others involved because commerce was not yet
covered by limited liability. In such a personal system of business,
creditors holding bad bills pursued each endorser until they found one who
could pay. Even at Canton Forbes had worried about credits, and now with a
wider view from Boston, he could see the full extent of the abuses. After
investigating the causes of the widespread failures, he decided that "the
immense credit which has been obtained on little or no capital" lay behind
"all the late stoppages." The reckless behavior he had managed to restrain in
Canton had run totally out of control in the larger world, and the storm of
retribution struck down the innocent with the guilty.[41]
When the emergency had passed, Forbes realized that the United States was
gradually slipping out of the mainstream of the China trade. He found that he
was no longer in the best position to direct that commerce or to influence
the workings of Russell Co. Forbes's new role in Boston was not yet clear,
and his judgments were frequently challenged by the Canton residents.
Moreover, his news from Boston was not as fresh as that out of London because
he unaccountably failed to use the overland mail route he had introduced to
the house. He was rebuked for giving Bennet Forbes authority to use the house
signature and was severely reprimanded for charging commissions on house
business while collecting a partner's share as well.[42]
A serious strain in relations among the partners came in the summer of 1838,
when a young man named Joseph Coolidge, working with Baring's agent Joshua
Bates in London, purchased a large shipment of British goods for Howqua in
direct violation of the Hong merchant's orders. Coolidge claimed his
authority through Forbes and Cushing. Forbes denied any part in the purchase
and branded Coolidge a scoundrel. The house threatened to hold Bates and
Coolidge personally liable, while Howqua relieved Forbes of all authority to
trade in his name. By the following summer Forbes had succeeded in mollifying
Howqua, but Coolidge intensified his attack on Forbes, charging him with
misappropriating £50,000. This personal quarrel was exacerbated by the
diplomatic crisis in China over the opium traffic.
Russell Co. stood firm until February 1839, when it officially abandoned
the drug traffic. Business was at a turning point. War was threatening in
China. The term of partnership was due to expire at the first of the next
year. Forbes saw this as the time to capture Russell Co. for his own family
interests and then reduce his personal involvement in trade to a minimum.
Although not unresisted Forbes's reorganization was carried through, and in
1840 Robert Bennet Forbes was sent to Canton for the start of the new
three-year term.[43]

It's been a very curious experience to go through this little journey that Kevin just alluded to, which is the same journey that we have all gone through if we have heard this from patients. It's starts off back in the remote past, 1981-85, when I am a psychiatric resident. I mentioned yesterday that in four years of medical school and four years of residency, I have had more multiple choice questions on Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, which just to remind you, as you all know, is an inherited deficiency of enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosltransferase-I had more questions on that syndrome in my four years of
