Have you tried LastFM? as far as I can tell it does a similar thing to Pandora and definitely connects to SlimServer using James Craigs fantastic plugin. It can be flaky on some days but generally I get a good service. http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/ http://www.lastfm.co.uk/ This line on the FAQ suggests that streaming might not be possible -- Q: Can I listen to Pandora on my stereo? Pandora delivers high quality 128Kbps audio streams and they'll sound great on your stereo. All you need to do is plug your laptop or computer's audio output into a stereo input. You may need to get a cable to do that (Radio Shack). They usually cost less than ten dollars. Another great way to get Pandora to your stereo is to use an FM transmitter. Aaron Zinck Wrote: (Quoting Fredly) [...] when I currently go into Browse Playlists I have several pages (effectively every album I have). I didn't mean to create these playlist and just want to clear EVERYTHING and start from scratch. What's the simplest way to clear ALL playlist? -- Fredly In Slimserver you've probably set your playlist and music directories to be the same directory. That results in all of your music showing up as playlists. Change your Playlist directory to a different directory and things should behave as you expect. I don't think this is quite right. My playlist and music directories are the same, and this doesn't happen to me. It sounds to me like Fred's ripper has been set to create playlists for each album automatically. If Fred has ripped each album into its own folder (perhaps beneath a folder for the artist as well), then it may have created a .m3u file in the same place. Deleting only those .m3u files at the top level of the music directory won't delete these - which are probably the ones Fred wants to remove! Indeed, if Fred has separate artist/album subfolders, then the top-level playlists are more likely to be specially-created ones he wants to keep! (However, Fred does say he wants to delete *all* playlists...) In Unix, it's fairly trivial to run a shell command to remove all .m3u files in subfolders (e.g. find -name '*.m3u' -delete or something like that; it's a little more work to leave the top-level playlists). I'm less sure of how to do this in Windows, but you could always use Find Files to look for *.m3u in all subfolders of your music directory, and then just select all of them (except perhaps the top-level ones) and delete 'em. -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19172 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Using an epods to control SlimServer
I noticed a few posts from people using the Salton ePods (which runs WinCE 2.12) with their SqueezeBox devices. I am hoping to do the same, and am seeking advice from those who have tried this before me as to how well it works. I do not yet own a Squeezebox, but I do own a couple of epods which I've hacked to add wireless capability; I've installed SlimServer on my computer, and have used my epods to navigate the SlimServer menus via the epods web browser. So I know that much works. My goal is to have a SqueezeBox and an epods in (at least) two rooms in my house. The epods in a given room will be used to control the SqueezeBox in that room. My hope is that the users (especially my wife and kids) will never have to touch the SqueezeBox, instead using the epods to select the music they wish to play via the SlimServer menus. My CD collection is fairly extensive (1,200 CDs). My questions are: 1. Can someone verify that this setup actually works (I don't yet have the Squeezebox to test)? 2. How is the performance of the epods browser for this application, when it comes to browsing through large lists of albums and artists? 3. Is there any way to cache the album list on the epods, to improve browser performance? 4. Any others words of wisdom to offer? 1. Can someone verify that this setup actually works (I don't yet have the Squeezebox to test)? How is the performance of the epods browser for this application, when it comes to browsing through large lists of albums and artists? You can install slimserver without any risk (you did already, didn't you?). Just try it. The performance on the ePods won't be better or worse whether you have 100 or 1200 cds. It's browsing a web page. The server will have to work hard. 3. Is there any way to cache the album list on the epods, to improve browser performance? Not beyond the browser's caching capability. 4. Any others words of wisdom to offer? Just test it. Does the Use iTunes feature work at all?? In the server settings, I've clicked the button to Use iTunes. In the iTunes settings, I've: -Set the iTunes reload time to 0 (i.e., no reload) -Set unchecked songs in iTunes to don't include unchecked songs I've tried both using Find iTunes Music Library Automatically and Specify iTunes Library Music Library using: C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml Where [User] is the user ID I'm logged in as. I've actually gone to the trouble of pasting in the location, so no typos. I've tried these variations with iTunes running, and without iTunes running. My iTunes shows about 30K songs--half Apple Lossless (all checked) and half (same songs) AACs (all unchecked). When I do a clear library and rescan, it doesn't pick up any iTunes entries. In fact, it picks up two WMA files that came with the XP Pro install I have--some version of Beethoven's 9th and some other Jazz thing that are in My Music\Sample Music. What gives? Its like Slimserver is ignoring the Use iTunes setting and still trying to scan My Music\ for song files... I can scan for all song files (mine are actually on a network drive), but the ignore checked files thing seems like a great way of eliminating the duplicate AAC files (I'd prefer the home network SB3s to use Apple Lossless files--the AACs are just for iPod use). seanadams Wrote: samlw, Your situation is not typical at all - nearly everyone using AAC is on Mac/Windows (or a linux machine capable of running faad), in which case it simply works. I'm not sure why you keep pushing the SoundBridge button - we are well aware that porting codecs is possible, but I think you underestimate the cost of implementing and licensing codecs for an embedded system. As we've said, the benefits are relatively miniscule in the case of AAC, given that it already works just fine on any of our supported platforms. That's not to say it won't happen - just that it's not a high priority. BTW if you ever need to use ANY lossless format (Flac, Apple, WMA) or any non-mainstream/emerging format, you will be very glad you chose Squeezebox. :) We do appreciate the feedback though, and client-side AAC is understood as a desirable feature. Sean Sorry, I don't mean to push the SoundBridge button. I think the Squeezebox is a great product, or I wouldn't have bought one. I only bring it up because AAC/iTunes integration is a differentiating feature of what I perceive to be Squeezebox's main competitor. You say that my case is atypical. However, a simple google search will turn up many many users of LinkStation and other low-power NAS devices as music servers feeding Squeezboxes. Its a great thing to have a small quiet 17w server dedicated to streaming your music library, rather than operating a hulking power-hungry noisy desktop computer 24/7. The combination of LinkStation + Squeezebox is such an elegant one that I'm surprised Slim hasn't pursued an official partnership with Buffalo. But I digress. In my case, I am running mt-daapd on my LinkStation. This serves shared music to all iTunes clients on my network. If Squeezebox incorporated a daap client, it would be able to see and play all that music, as well as any music being shared by any other instances of iTunes music sharing on the network. This of course would not preclude using SlimServer to gain access to additional formats and features, for those who want it. But I think this would be a great feature for the Squeezebox. For one thing, the unit could be up and running and playing music out of the box without requiring installation of any software (for iTunes music sharing folks, at any rate). Anyway, just my 2 cents. Thanks for listening. And thanks for making a great product. I'm just offering some ideas that I think would make it even better. :) -- samlw samlw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2818 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

For my part, I prefer to have a low-power (17w) small silent dedicated server that can be left running all the time so that my music is always available. Leaving a large noisy power-hungry desktop maching running 24/7 for this purpose strikes me as inelegant and wasteful of resources. But that's just my personal preference. And for the record, I don't want to see the Squeezebox firmware become bloated or the product become more expensive. But I do think that perhaps the optimal balance has not yet been achieved. There's always room for improvement, right? Oh, and BTW - I'm a huge proponent of open source and I love that SlimServer exists. [slim] Nice job on 6.2.1, guys
I'm a longtime Slim user (still have an original Slimp3) who usually stays far from the bleeding edge server releases. I've been using 5.4.1 for a while and it's been very solid. An interest in playing with GoCubs' SuperDateTime screensaver prompted me to try the latest official release, 6.2.1. I'm running the server on a cheap Linux/AMD system with 512 RAM, about 18,000 songs. It's always a joy to look through the server and player settings to see all the neat, new stuff that's been added. All I can say is, the slimserver continues to astound with new features and configuration options. Even sweeter, the performance is much better with the new db backend. With 5.4.1, cueing up a large list like Genre-Rock would usually blank the display for a looong time and occasionally kill the server. With 6.2.1, no complaints from the server and the music starts in a few seconds. Excellent! Re: [slim] Re: Native AAC Support
If your goal is to keep CPU activity to a minimum, Why is that your goal? Slimserver's CPU requirements are next-to-nothing when it's not rescanning. Disk performance is much more of a problem, especially if it is not the only process requiring disk access on the host. you have to choose a path sans transcoding. If you hate transcoding so much, just reencode your library and keep a FLACed copy around. only real choice which led to my comment. Many of us cannot justify moving on to SB2/SB3 simply for FLAC Then move because of the vastly superior sound and display quality perhaps? I think the long term goal should be to support all major formats (where possible) in firmware. I really don't. The whole point of the SB is to be a slim device, so as much of its behaviour as possible can be changed in the open source server software. Much less prone to bugs and locked-up units that way. I DO think however that handling of transcoded streams should be changed so that they allow seeking. For the average user who wants lossless, the choice is WMA or M4P. Where'd you get that from ??? Anyway, I suggest upgrading your server, keeping a FLACed mirror tree or, best of all, stop using iTunes. [slim] SB2 - Cannot communicate on wireless network
I've had my SB2 for about 2 months now. Occasionally I've had to reboot the unit when it has become non-responsive which has resolved the problem in the past. The other day I noctied the display was showing some random lines and dots, and the unit was non-responsive. A reboot did not completely resolve the issue. The SB2 will not communicate on the wireless network, where it has for the last 2 months without any issues. I've done the follwoing: 1) Factory Reset 2) Re-programmed MAC address (was 00-FF-00-00-FF-00) 3) Re-programmed all network settings The unit will successfully connect to my network (SSID), but does not retrieve a DHCP address, and will not work using a static address either. DHCP always returns a 169.254.x.x IP address, which means it's not getting an address. All other wireless and wired devices on my network have no problem getting an IP address via DHCP. I've reset and re-programmed the unit countless times and still no success. The device is seen by the wireless router (with the corrected MAC address), but the unit isn't able to communicate on the network. Hey Dean When I experienced the pixellated display, here is what I can say occurred in my situation. I had the Slim running for over 24 hours utilizing a random mix across the entire collection. I had paused the device overnight, 'unpaused', ran it for a few hours, paused the device ran some errands, 'unpaused' for a few hours, repeat ran for few more hours then it displayed the pixellation and all my settings were blown. When the device stopped playing I looked over at my cable dig display and it was exactly 10PM est. No storms or power surges at the time. My server was running on a WinXP Pro box that had it's IP assigned via DHCP I reassigned it a dedicated IP (which I obviously should have done day 1 (rushed to set up intially). [slim] Suggestion for the Remote Control
I've had my Squeezebox 3 for a few weeks and I'm extremely happy with it. The hardware works great, and I'm continually impressed by the design and hard work that has gone into the SlimServer software. I don't even have time to delve into all the great features I could be using. The only thing that's been an irritant to me--and I admit it is minor--is the design and placement of the volume buttons on the remote. In the spirit of providing feedback to the Slim Devices engineers and suggestions for improvement, I'd like to provide my thoughts. (If this is the wrong place to post this, I'd appreciate someone letting me know where suggestions belong) 1) I'd like the volume buttons to be more conveniently located. I find I have to stretch across the remote to reach them. I'd rather have the volume buttons within easy reach. At the very least I'd move the volume buttons to the right and have them swap places with the power button, which doesn't need to be accessed as often. (I'm right-handed, as are the majority of people) 2) Even more fundamentally, I find the labeling/placement of the volume buttons to be very un-intuitive. Volume up and down are indicated with up and down carets (^) yet the buttons are placed side-by-side, rather than vertically which would make the button arrangement consistent with the icons. Every time I want to change the volume I have to do a mental double-take to make sure I hit the right button. The recommendation would be either (1) to change the labels on the buttons to right and left carets ( and ), using the convention that the caret pointing right means higher volume, or better yet,(2) to place the buttons in a vertical arrangement with the top button being up volume (^). I hope this feedback helps. Other than this little thing, everything's been fabulous. -- Lawrence Lawrence's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2667 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19212 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Re: Native AAC Support
On a low-powered system, transcoding causes burps in the music. I cannot begin to imagine how low-powered this system would have to be. A flakey wireless connection, maybe. A slow disk with some other concurrent accesses, maybe. Not the transcoding. Both FLAC and AAC run fine on battery-powered devices. Incidentally the SB2 and up have a far larger buffer - you'd have to torture the server to get dropouts. Looks to me you want to solve a problem you have with an SB1 and an underpowered server by adding a feature no-one else needs to the firmware of an SB2, which however wouldn't exhibit the problem in the first place. Most average users likely use WMP or iTunes. Might be, since when is that a reason to do the same? Most likely your average user doesn't know what a Squeezebox is, either. Hell, average users tend to have their Windows machines chock-full with spyware ... One lossy and one lossless format in firmware is enough, provided the server gains the ability to seek through these files and to transcode radio streams. Which model SMC router is it? --- stoobie-doo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Liv Wrote: Stoo Here a few thoughts... Have you tried to connect from wired ethernet connection right to the router? I feel the pain... hang in Liv I think it is the router, I get real flaky handling with this SMC router; some times i get DHCP on the first try, other times I have to reset the SB3 up to 3 times before it gets the magic IP. Now, it can't see my SlimServer (which is on network, but connected to a wifi repeater) - anyone using repeaters or range extenders successfully? -- stoobie-doo stoobie-doo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2192 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19186 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss __ Find your next car at http://autos.yahoo.ca ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3 loses connection to SlimServer
I am having frequent occasions where I am streaming to the SB3 and at some point, the SB3 loses connection to the SlimServer and the SlimServer reports Contol Connection failed. Sometimes connecting to SqueezeNetwork seems to fix the problem, but lately it is getting harder and harder to reestablish that connection. Is this a router issue? (SMC router)? Wifi strength issue? PC with the server is running Blackice - I have UDP and TCP ports 3483 and TCP 9000 always enabled. Any ideas? -- stoobie-doo stoobie-doo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2192 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19225 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I haven't used Scanner before but I have to comment on this as well, I listen to a lot of trance and most of the mixes I listen to are 1 or 2 hours long. It is a major bummer if I want to skip through a particular point in the song (which is often). I am going to install scanner right now. -- PoW PoW's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=884 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19193 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Screen pixellated, SB3 reset itself, now can't reconnect
SMCWBR14-G There seems to be plenty of weirdness going on with this router. I fixed the first issue of not connecting, it was a MAC address mess. However, I am having problems acquiring an IP address via DHCP (may take 2-3 SB3 resets) and am having problems maintaining connection to the SlimServer (Web interface reports Control Connection Fail at some point after streaming had been working). Does these both sound like router problems, or something else? The PC with the SlimServer has a BlackIce firewall, 3483 TCP/UDP and 9000 UDP have been configured on BlackIce (but not the SMC) to always be open. -- stoobie-doo stoobie-doo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2192 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19226 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support
I don't see why this is being taken as such an absurd request by some. Sean has certainly made clear Slim's reasons, and he makes a lot of sense. But it it was almost a deal breaker for me when I first purchased my Squeezebox. I bought a SB1 and a Soundbridge M1000 to compare head to head. The SB1 always burped on AAC transcodes, while the M1000 played them perfectly over the same connection. With my server being my main day-to-day machine, I didn't want to mess with transcoding either. Luckily for me, the SB2 came out with 30 days of my SB1 purchase, so I returned both the SB1 and the M1000 and got a SB2. While the SB1 had a lot more power and possibility, the M1000 had a bit smoother out of the box experience. I'm not sure what the harshness towards 'average users' is all about. While Slimserver and Squeezebox are wonderful and have a fantastic number of options, it does sometimes seem that ease of use and simplicity take a back seat. Again, only going by my experience, but I've had the SB2 for going on a year now, and my wife still can't get the hang of it. She's far from a techie, but she still prefers to take 5 CDs from their cases, put them in the player and hit shuffle... This is as opposed to our Tivo, which, in a sense, is a similar type of device. She took to that very easily, and now couldn't live without it. There is something to be said for ease of use. Sorry about the threadjack there, but it was just a bit discouraging to see a couple of posts with folks disparaging 'average users' who may not live and breath this stuff and want to spend every waking moment fiddling with it... -- Ben Ben's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=54 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19155 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Just as an FYI, if you rip your mixes as individual tracks it makes it easier to jump around in them too. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19193 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I seriously doubt that's that case and I think that's the real point. The average user doesn't know the difference between MP3 and FLAC and AAC and ALAC. Adding AAC to the firmware would not benefit the average user in any way that the average user would be able to comprehend. Nothing wrong with that, not disparaging average users, it's just the way things are. Ben ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
