[slim] Re: SB2 wont detect new music.

2005-12-17 Thread Guy

Thanks for that - I've got my folder set up with one folder per artist
and a folder per album beneath that. I'll try using browse music next
time I add some new tunes.

I still don't think this should be necessary, why does the SlimServer
not pick up additions automatically? I've got the scheduled rescan set
up and that makes no difference either.

Have you tried LastFM? as far as I can tell it does a similar thing to
Pandora and definitely connects to SlimServer using James Craigs
fantastic plugin.

It can be flaky on some days but generally I get a good service.

Q: Can I listen to Pandora on my stereo?

Pandora delivers high quality 128Kbps audio streams and they'll sound
great on your stereo. All you need to do is plug your laptop or
computer's audio output into a stereo input. You may need to get a
cable to do that (Radio Shack). They usually cost less than ten
dollars.

Another great way to get Pandora to your stereo is to use an FM
transmitter. We've heard good things about the RocketFM from Griffin
Technologies

However I could be wrong, it has been known

What's the simplest way to clear ALL playlist?
  --

In Slimserver you've probably set your playlist and music directories
 to be
the same directory. That results in all of your music showing up as
playlists. Change your Playlist directory to a different directory
 and
things should behave as you expect.

I don't think this is quite right. My playlist and music directories
are the same, and this doesn't happen to me.

It sounds to me like Fred's ripper has been set to create playlists for
each album automatically. If Fred has ripped each album into its own
folder (perhaps beneath a folder for the artist as well), then it may
have created a .m3u file in the same place. Deleting only those .m3u
files at the top level of the music directory won't delete these -
which are probably the ones Fred wants to remove! Indeed, if Fred has
separate artist/album subfolders, then the top-level playlists are more
likely to be specially-created ones he wants to keep! (However, Fred
does say he wants to delete *all* playlists...)

In Unix, it's fairly trivial to run a shell command to remove all .m3u
files in subfolders (e.g. find -name '*.m3u' -delete or something
like that; it's a little more work to leave the top-level playlists).
I'm less sure of how to do this in Windows, but you could always use
Find Files to look for *.m3u in all subfolders of your music directory,
and then just select all of them (except perhaps the top-level ones) and
delete 'em.

[slim] My wireless card died

2005-12-17 Thread jdp

I received my wireless SB3 yesterday, set it up, it saw my wireless net,
got an IP, connected to my Slimserver but then 10s after selecting a
song to play switched off and wouldn't turn back on.

I took the cover off to check the CPU wasn't loose and discovered that
the SB3 works fine when the wireless card is removed, but is totally
dead when the wireless card is plugged in.

Anything I can do? Or should I just return the wireless card? (I'd
rather not return the SB3 as it's so close to Christmas, and it works
just fine in wired mode)

Beef

I suspect you're on to something with using Pause over an extended
period of time. I experienced my only true issue with the device
about 2 weeks ago. The device stopped playing, the screen on the
device was pixellated and I couldn't reconnect to the network. It
appeared that my MAC was corrupted (as well as other settings) and
required me to reset the device and re-enter all settings including the
MAC address of the device. What's interesting is that I was extensively
using the Pause control. For example, I would pause the Slim for hours
as I left the house to run errands... I did this throughout the day as
well as having the Random Mix playing for hours upon hours. Never had
an issue...the only thing can isolate as a variable is the extended
pause time.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to relay concerns regarding the
Pause control. Smoking gun ... maybe... hope I didn't create and
confusion with the post.

[slim] Using an epods to control SlimServer

2005-12-17 Thread Jon

I noticed a few posts from people using the Salton ePods (which runs
WinCE 2.12) with their SqueezeBox devices. I am hoping to do the same,
and am seeking advice from those who have tried this before me as to how
well it works.

I do not yet own a Squeezebox, but I do own a couple of epods which
I've hacked to add wireless capability; I've installed SlimServer on my
computer, and have used my epods to navigate the SlimServer menus via
the epods web browser. So I know that much works.

My goal is to have a SqueezeBox and an epods in (at least) two rooms in
my house. The epods in a given room will be used to control the
SqueezeBox in that room. My hope is that the users (especially my wife
and kids) will never have to touch the SqueezeBox, instead using the
epods to select the music they wish to play via the SlimServer menus.
My CD collection is fairly extensive (1,200 CDs).

My questions are:
1. Can someone verify that this setup actually works (I don't yet have
the Squeezebox to test)?

2. How is the performance of the epods browser for this application,
when it comes to browsing through large lists of albums and artists?

3. Is there any way to cache the album list on the epods, to improve
browser performance?

4. Any others words of wisdom to offer?

Thanks!

2005-12-17 Thread Michael Herger

1. Can someone verify that this setup actually works (I don't yet have
the Squeezebox to test)?

You'd have to bookmark the room's player on the ePods browser
(http://slimserver:9000/index.html?player=12:23:45:54:23)

2. How is the performance of the epods browser for this application,
when it comes to browsing through large lists of albums and artists?

You can install slimserver without any risk (you did already, didn't
you?). Just try it. The performance on the ePods won't be better or worse
whether you have 100 or 1200 cds. It's browsing a web page. The server
will have to work hard.

3. Is there any way to cache the album list on the epods, to improve
browser performance?

Not beyond the browser's caching capability.

4. Any others words of wisdom to offer?

Just test it. Install slimserver, run Softsqueeze (included with
slimserver) on the server and remote control it using the ePod.

[slim] Help! Use iTunes not working??

2005-12-17 Thread edesilva

Does the Use iTunes feature work at all??

In the server settings, I've clicked the button to Use iTunes. In
the iTunes settings, I've:

-Set the iTunes reload time to 0 (i.e., no reload)
-Set unchecked songs in iTunes to don't include unchecked songs

I've tried both using Find iTunes Music Library Automatically and
Specify iTunes Library Music Library using:

C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes
Music Library.xml

Where [User] is the user ID I'm logged in as. I've actually gone to
the trouble of pasting in the location, so no typos. I've tried these
variations with iTunes running, and without iTunes running.

My iTunes shows about 30K songs--half Apple Lossless (all checked) and
half (same songs) AACs (all unchecked). When I do a clear library and
rescan, it doesn't pick up any iTunes entries. In fact, it picks up
two WMA files that came with the XP Pro install I have--some version of
Beethoven's 9th and some other Jazz thing that are in My Music\Sample
Music. What gives? Its like Slimserver is ignoring the Use iTunes
setting and still trying to scan My Music\ for song files...

I can scan for all song files (mine are actually on a network drive),
but the ignore checked files thing seems like a great way of
eliminating the duplicate AAC files (I'd prefer the home network SB3s
to use Apple Lossless files--the AACs are just for iPod use).

Any ideas??

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-17 Thread samlw

seanadams Wrote:
 samlw,

Your situation is not typical at all - nearly everyone using AAC is on
Mac/Windows (or a linux machine capable of running faad), in which case
it simply works. I'm not sure why you keep pushing the SoundBridge
button - we are well aware that porting codecs is possible, but I
think you underestimate the cost of implementing and licensing codecs
for an embedded system. As we've said, the benefits are relatively
miniscule in the case of AAC, given that it already works just fine on
any of our supported platforms. That's not to say it won't happen -
just that it's not a high priority.

BTW if you ever need to use ANY lossless format (Flac, Apple, WMA) or
any non-mainstream/emerging format, you will be very glad you chose
 Squeezebox. :)

We do appreciate the feedback though, and client-side AAC is understood
 as a desirable feature.

 Sean
Sorry, I don't mean to push the SoundBridge button. I think the
Squeezebox is a great product, or I wouldn't have bought one. I only
bring it up because AAC/iTunes integration is a differentiating feature
of what I perceive to be Squeezebox's main competitor.

You say that my case is atypical. However, a simple google search will
turn up many many users of LinkStation and other low-power NAS devices
as music servers feeding Squeezboxes. Its a great thing to have a small
quiet 17w server dedicated to streaming your music library, rather than
operating a hulking power-hungry noisy desktop computer 24/7. The
combination of LinkStation + Squeezebox is such an elegant one that I'm
surprised Slim hasn't pursued an official partnership with Buffalo. But
I digress.

In my case, I am running mt-daapd on my LinkStation. This serves shared
music to all iTunes clients on my network. If Squeezebox incorporated a
daap client, it would be able to see and play all that music, as well
as any music being shared by any other instances of iTunes music
sharing on the network. This of course would not preclude using
SlimServer to gain access to additional formats and features, for those
who want it. But I think this would be a great feature for the
Squeezebox. For one thing, the unit could be up and running and playing
music out of the box without requiring installation of any software (for
iTunes music sharing folks, at any rate).

Anyway, just my 2 cents. Thanks for listening. And thanks for making a
great product. I'm just offering some ideas that I think would make it
even better. :)

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-17 Thread samlw

 Seriously,
maintaining a parallel tree with separate formats is just way too
inelegant to even contemplate - IMHO, it goes against everything the
  Squeezebox stands for!

To be honest, that's the same reaction I have when I see people talk
about running slimserver on underpowered NAS boxes, and then start
pushing for more features to be added to the (proprietary) firmware
because their server can't handle running the (open-source) code that
 implements those features server-side.

 - Marc
Fair enough! For my part, I prefer to have a low-power (17w) small
silent dedicated server that can be left running all the time so that
my music is always available. Leaving a large noisy power-hungry
desktop maching running 24/7 for this purpose strikes me as inelegant
and wasteful of resources. But that's just my personal preference. And
for the record, I don't want to see the Squeezebox firmware become
bloated or the product become more expensive. But I do think that
perhaps the optimal balance has not yet been achieved. There's always
room for improvement, right?

Oh, and BTW - I'm a huge proponent of open source and I love that
SlimServer exists. Its relatively open architecture is one of the
reasons I chose Squeezbox. But this doesn't preclude making the product
a bit more flexible and usable by carefully and selectively enhancing
the firmware side as well...

I had a scheduled rescan too, but I turned this feature off as it seemed
to lose tracks (and playlists) rather than adding new music. I do a

between I add music with the Browse music folder method.

I run SlimServer on a slightly tweaked, dedicated PowerMac G4 Cube

internal drives over 120GB due to the IDE controller, but you can
either pull a little software foo and install a larger internal drive

[slim] Nice job on 6.2.1, guys

2005-12-17 Thread Pale Blue Ego

I'm a longtime Slim user (still have an original Slimp3) who usually
stays far from the bleeding edge server releases. I've been using
5.4.1 for a while and it's been very solid.

An interest in playing with GoCubs' SuperDateTime screensaver prompted
me to try the latest official release, 6.2.1.

I'm running the server on a cheap Linux/AMD system with 512 RAM, about
18,000 songs.

It's always a joy to look through the server and player settings to see
all the neat, new stuff that's been added. All I can say is, the
slimserver continues to astound with new features and configuration
options.

Even sweeter, the performance is much better with the new db backend.
With 5.4.1, cueing up a large list like Genre-Rock would usually blank
the display for a looong time and occasionally kill the server. With
6.2.1, no complaints from the server and the music starts in a few
seconds. Excellent!

Keep up the great work!

Re: [slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-17 Thread Christian Pernegger
If your goal is to keep CPU activity to a minimum,

Why is that your goal? Slimserver's CPU requirements are
next-to-nothing when it's not rescanning. Disk performance is much
more of a problem, especially if it is not the only process requiring
disk access on the host.

you have to choose a path sans transcoding.

If you hate transcoding so much, just reencode your library and keep a
FLACed copy around.

only real choice which led to my comment. Many of us cannot justify
moving on to SB2/SB3 simply for FLAC

Then move because of the vastly superior sound and display quality perhaps?

I think the long term goal should be to support all major formats
 (where possible) in firmware.

I really don't. The whole point of the SB is to be a slim device, so
as much of its behaviour as possible can be changed in the open source
server software. Much less prone to bugs and locked-up units that way.
I DO think however that handling of transcoded streams should be
changed so that they allow seeking.

For the average user who wants lossless, the choice is WMA or M4P.

Where'd you get that from ???

Anyway, I suggest upgrading your server, keeping a FLACed mirror tree
or, best of all, stop using iTunes.

[slim] SB2 - Cannot communicate on wireless network

2005-12-17 Thread jbell73

I've had my SB2 for about 2 months now.

Occasionally I've had to reboot the unit when it has become
non-responsive which has resolved the problem in the past.

The other day I noctied the display was showing some random lines and
dots, and the unit was non-responsive. A reboot did not completely
resolve the issue.

The SB2 will not communicate on the wireless network, where it has for
the last 2 months without any issues.

I've done the follwoing:

1) Factory Reset
2) Re-programmed MAC address (was 00-FF-00-00-FF-00)
3) Re-programmed all network settings

The unit will successfully connect to my network (SSID), but does not
retrieve a DHCP address, and will not work using a static address
either.

DHCP always returns a 169.254.x.x IP address, which means it's not
getting an address. All other wireless and wired devices on my network
have no problem getting an IP address via DHCP.

I've reset and re-programmed the unit countless times and still no
success. The device is seen by the wireless router (with the corrected
MAC address), but the unit isn't able to communicate on the network.
Could it be a faulty PC-Card in the unit?

Hey Dean

When I experienced the pixellated display, here is what I can say
occurred in my situation.

I had the Slim running for over 24 hours utilizing a random mix across
the entire collection. I had paused the device overnight, 'unpaused',
ran it for a few hours, paused the device ran some errands, 'unpaused'
for a few hours, repeat ran for few more hours then it displayed
the pixellation and all my settings were blown. When the device
stopped playing I looked over at my cable dig display and it was
exactly 10PM est. No storms or power surges at the time.

My server was running on a WinXP Pro box that had it's IP assigned via
DHCP I reassigned it a dedicated IP (which I obviously should have
done day 1 (rushed to set up intially).

If you're wondering why I would use pause... I guess I was just doing a
little QA :).

Hope you figure it out... it kinda freaked me out when it happened but
haven't this occur since

BTW... I love this thing!!!

Thanks

[slim] Suggestion for the Remote Control

2005-12-17 Thread Lawrence

I've had my Squeezebox 3 for a few weeks and I'm extremely happy with
it. The hardware works great, and I'm continually impressed by the
design and hard work that has gone into the SlimServer software. I
don't even have time to delve into all the great features I could be
using.

The only thing that's been an irritant to me--and I admit it is
minor--is the design and placement of the volume buttons on the remote.
In the spirit of providing feedback to the Slim Devices engineers and
suggestions for improvement, I'd like to provide my thoughts. (If this
is the wrong place to post this, I'd appreciate someone letting me know
where suggestions belong)

1) I'd like the volume buttons to be more conveniently located. I find
I have to stretch across the remote to reach them. I'd rather have the
volume buttons within easy reach. At the very least I'd move the volume
buttons to the right and have them swap places with the power button,
which doesn't need to be accessed as often. (I'm right-handed, as are
the majority of people)

2) Even more fundamentally, I find the labeling/placement of the volume
buttons to be very un-intuitive. Volume up and down are indicated with
up and down carets (^) yet the buttons are placed side-by-side, rather
than vertically which would make the button arrangement consistent with
the icons. Every time I want to change the volume I have to do a mental
double-take to make sure I hit the right button.

The recommendation would be either (1) to change the labels on the
buttons to right and left carets ( and ), using the convention
that the caret pointing right means higher volume, or better yet,(2) to
place the buttons in a vertical arrangement with the top button being
up volume (^).

I hope this feedback helps. Other than this little thing, everything's
been fabulous.

2005-12-17 Thread bishopdonmiguel

 Why is that your goal?

On a low-powered system, transcoding causes burps in the music and it
completely ruins the listening experience so you try to limit whatever
you can. I suppose I could upgrade the server, but I have already
invested significantly in the players. More $$$ isn't really an
option.

If you hate transcoding so much, just reencode your library and keep
a FLACed copy around.

An option, surely, but a single library is enough to maintain.

Then move because of the vastly superior sound and display quality
perhaps?

Only when the prices drop significantly.

Where'd you get that from ???

Most average users likely use WMP or iTunes. The lossless choices

[slim] Alpha testers wanted for Java-based server

2005-12-17 Thread clumsyoik

Hi all,

I've been hacking on an new Java-based server implementation, and I'd
like to get two or three volunteers to try it out before releasing to a
wider audience. I have run it on Windows and Linux, but I specifically
want a Mac owner to try it out. Windows/Linux users will need the Sun
JDK/JRE.

I decided to completely rewrite the server rather than implement the
features I want in perl. That's how much I hate perl :-)

In its current state, the server simply plays random Ogg and Flac
tracks from the library, and displays the track time/album/artist. You
can also skip forward if a rubbish track comes on.

This is pretty much the minimum functionality that is usable (for me,
at least).

There are a few interesting features:

* The server is highly multithreaded. The aim is for UI latencyto
be completely unaffected by, well, anything.
* Transcoding is done to physical Flac files (to allow FFWD/REW,
although that is not written yet)
* Allows the user to set a rating for a file (although nothing is
done with the rating yet)
* Significantly lower resource usage than slimserver. Appears to run
OK with -Xmx32M (ie 32MB JVM heap)
* Scanning of tags is fast, automatic and does not affect the UI.

Anyway, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] if youre interested.

[slim] Slimserver not counting correctly, HELP!

2005-12-17 Thread Jetlag

The situation: The only folder that I have Slimserver look at for music
is located at J:\Music\_FLAC_DB. In this folder each CD is ripped to
it's own folder, all tracks in FLAC format.

For example; The first CD (and consequently the first folder) is
AC-DC - Back In Black (1980), and it is located at
J:\Music\_FLAC_DB\AC-DC - Back In Black (1980). This folder ONLY
contains the associated flac files from that CD (10 tracks), there are
nothing BUT flac files in any of these folders.

The problem? I have 473 folders (CDs) in that directory, but when
Slimserver scans my library, it comes up with 489 albums. ??

I downloaded the latest daily and even deleted the old slimserversql.db
file, but after a rescan get the exact same results.

This is causing me major brain coniptions, can anyone suggest a
possible cause before one of my lobes explodes?

Slimserver only uses folder names to distinguish albums from each other
when it can't figure it out from tags.

Are the tags correct? (Case matters...) Are some of these double

Each CD is in it's own folder, even those from boxed sets. Example, see

I was thinking that perhaps a few of the CD titles (album titles) may
have been screwed up in the tags, I guess I will have to do some

is easy to see what is in the tags in a spreadsheet-like format.

Lemme get this straight -- you didn't buy the Squeezebox at Best Buy, did
you? Didn't read a review in some glossy Ziff Davis magazine, right?
Rather, you had to do some research to find out about it, and maybe some
more research to ensure that it was the best solution for your needs. Then
you had to buy it online and wait for it to be shipped, instead of taking
the average user instant gratification route.

Same goes for your NAS, right? So what's up with playing the average
user card now that it comes to selecting a format to stream in? Or is
this a never mind my needs, What About The Children? argument? Just
trying to keep it straight.

What naming convention are you using for your artwork? At one time I
used a variation of the album name, but that didn't work for several
release versions of SlimServer, so I capitulated and renamed all of the
covers cover.jpg.

If you use Browse Music Folder to add music to your library, the

[slim] Re: Alpha testers wanted for Java-based server

2005-12-17 Thread JJZolx

clumsyoik Wrote:

How well can this coexist with the existing SlimServer? Does it use
the same database as SlimServer when it scans? Same logic and tags for
determining compilations, etc.? Is there any kind of remote interface,
or is the interface a Java applet running only on the server?

Re: [slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-17 Thread Christian Pernegger
On a low-powered system, transcoding causes burps in the music.

I cannot begin to imagine how low-powered this system would have to
be. A flakey wireless connection, maybe. A slow disk with some other
concurrent accesses, maybe. Not the transcoding. Both FLAC and AAC run
fine on battery-powered devices.

Incidentally the SB2 and up have a far larger buffer - you'd have to
torture the server to get dropouts.

Looks to me you want to solve a problem you have with an SB1 and an
underpowered server by adding a feature no-one else needs to the
firmware of an SB2, which however wouldn't exhibit the problem in the
first place.

Most average users likely use WMP or iTunes.

Might be, since when is that a reason to do the same? Most likely your
average user doesn't know what a Squeezebox is, either. Hell,
average users tend to have their Windows machines chock-full with
spyware ...

One lossy and one lossless format in firmware is enough, provided the
server gains the ability to seek through these files and to transcode
radio streams.

[slim] Playlist disappear because of missing #EXTM3U

2005-12-17 Thread ctbarker32

Hi,

New Squeezebox and Slimserver user here. I've done pretty well getting
my music server running on a dedicated ClarkConnect box. I am having
problems with Playlists not working or disappearing from my
Slimserver.

I am running: SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Linux - EN - utf8

I have discovered that if I create a playlist using the slimserver web
interface and save the new playlist that it is deleted when a rescan
playlists is done. I discovered that if I download the playlist using
the download link for the current playlist and open in a text editor
that the file only lists the songs for the current playlist but doesn't
have the header entry EXTM3U at the beginning of the file. If I add
this missing header and save the file directly to my designated
playlist directory, the file will be accepted and survives a playlist
scan by the server.

It would seem the playlist feature is a bit buggy?

Thanks.

2005-12-17 Thread Govnah

I have done just about everything. Uninstalled, deleted the slimserver
directory, reinstalled, upgraded to 6.5b. Currently I have a file named
cover.jpg in the directory with the tracks. The same as the others that
are showing up under browse artwork. Very frustratingFor example
here is my path, ./music/album-name/tracks w/ cover.jpg.

Thanks

[slim] Size limit of Playlist?

2005-12-17 Thread ctbarker32

I have been creating some custom playlists. I created one with over 1250
entries. This crashed Slimserver 6.2.1 running on Linux. I edited the
playlist down to about 970 entries and this worked and did not crash
the server.

I am finding playlists very problem prone. Is there an extensive
document that outlines what can and cannot be done with playlists.

Thanks.

Yes, there were double entries, problem solved!

Most of the double entries were simple things like with vs. With in
the album names. I have gone back and edited a few things over the
months, I guess I need to become more diligent.

I used the Rio software (available free via download), and it works
great for editing tags in a quasi-spreadsheet format. Makes mistakes
or inconsistencies very easy to discern. By right clicking on a song,
group of songs, album, or group of albums, a properties box pops-up
allowing you to easily make permanent TAG changes. Easy and free!

Here is a partial screen shot:

(you may need to full screen your browser to read it)

Anyone know of any other free apps out there that might do an even
better job of this?

Sure, Mp3tag, http://www.mp3tag.de/en/

It makes looking for inconsistencies easy because you
can sort by tag field. One click on the album name
field sorts them by album. That would make minor
inconsistencies stand out because they would be either
at the start or the end of the group.

And yes, minor inconsistencies do creep in all the time.

I could have sworn stuff like that was made case-insensitive in
SlimServer quite a while ago. For exactly this reason - so you don't
end up with multiple albums or artists when your tags aren't perfect
right down to the same capitalization.

Anyone know of any other free apps out there that might do an even
 better job of this?
Mp3tag is quite good. Makes it easy to apply a tag change to one,
several, or all of the files in the view - changing an album name, or a
release date, for instance. You can build tags from other tags, rename
files based on tag data, or pull tag data from file names. And a lot
more. Very powerful.

[slim] SB3 loses connection to SlimServer

2005-12-17 Thread stoobie-doo

I am having frequent occasions where I am streaming to the SB3 and at
some point, the SB3 loses connection to the SlimServer and the
SlimServer reports Contol Connection failed.

Sometimes connecting to SqueezeNetwork seems to fix the problem, but
lately it is getting harder and harder to reestablish that connection.

Is this a router issue? (SMC router)?
Wifi strength issue?
PC with the server is running Blackice - I have UDP and TCP ports 3483
and TCP 9000 always enabled.

Any ideas?

I haven't used Scanner before but I have to comment on this as well, I
listen to a lot of trance and most of the mixes I listen to are 1 or 2
hours long. It is a major bummer if I want to skip through a
particular point in the song (which is often). I am going to install

SMCWBR14-G

There seems to be plenty of weirdness going on with this router.

I fixed the first issue of not connecting, it was a MAC address mess.
However, I am having problems acquiring an IP address via DHCP (may
take 2-3 SB3 resets) and am having problems maintaining connection to
the SlimServer (Web interface reports Control Connection Fail at some
point after streaming had been working).

Does these both sound like router problems, or something else?

The PC with the SlimServer has a BlackIce firewall, 3483 TCP/UDP and
9000 UDP have been configured on BlackIce (but not the SMC) to always
be open.

[slim] Re: Native AAC Support

2005-12-17 Thread Ben

I don't see why this is being taken as such an absurd request by some.
Sean has certainly made clear Slim's reasons, and he makes a lot of
sense. But it it was almost a deal breaker for me when I first
purchased my Squeezebox. I bought a SB1 and a Soundbridge M1000 to
compare head to head. The SB1 always burped on AAC transcodes, while
the M1000 played them perfectly over the same connection. With my
server being my main day-to-day machine, I didn't want to mess with
transcoding either. Luckily for me, the SB2 came out with 30 days of my
SB1 purchase, so I returned both the SB1 and the M1000 and got a SB2.
While the SB1 had a lot more power and possibility, the M1000 had a bit
smoother out of the box experience.

I'm not sure what the harshness towards 'average users' is all about.
While Slimserver and Squeezebox are wonderful and have a fantastic
number of options, it does sometimes seem that ease of use and
simplicity take a back seat. Again, only going by my experience, but
I've had the SB2 for going on a year now, and my wife still can't get
the hang of it. She's far from a techie, but she still prefers to take
5 CDs from their cases, put them in the player and hit shuffle... This
is as opposed to our Tivo, which, in a sense, is a similar type of
device. She took to that very easily, and now couldn't live without it.
There is something to be said for ease of use.

Sorry about the threadjack there, but it was just a bit discouraging to
see a couple of posts with folks disparaging 'average users' who may not
live and breath this stuff and want to spend every waking moment
fiddling with it...

The average user doesn't know the difference between MP3 and FLAC and AAC and ALAC. Adding AAC to the firmware would not benefit the average user in any way that the average user would be able to comprehend. Nothing wrong with that, not disparaging average users, it's just the way things are.
