You are right the built-in media player is very limited.
I use an x50v to control and play music from SS using the handheld skin
and GSPlayer http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/gsplayer.shtml
or an alternative player called TCPMP http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about
although I prefer GSPlayer.

You can also use these players to play internet radio streams
independently of SS

[slim] Re: Tagging Issue

2006-10-05 Thread ceepan

That is what I tried to do, and it now appears that the tag info has
gone missing. If I look at the files in MP3 Tag, all that can be seen
(using extended tags right click option) is that of the replay info
that I applied. Is this what the ID2 info that Slimserver is
reporting. I have about 17000 songs and don't really want to have to
retag it all.

Sorry guys, should've clarified the post with some reason for it's
existence. I realise that the news story says he's able to license the
tech to enable non-Apple devices to play DRM files but I read that as a
bit of a smoke screen, with the fact that he's cracked the DRM being the
*actual* news story, for interested parties who, like many here, want to
play ITMS songs on their SqBoxes.

Kind of a half-step to nirvana, if you like.

I think the problem of using PSP is that it lacks a touch screen.
Navigating it using some buttons might be too cumbersome to be seriously
considered with any skin.

artwork at all, and I believe I had artwork turned off prior to this
new version. All the songs are in one large flat C:\My Music
directory, with just a couple albums in subfolders. There are no .jpg
or .gif files in this directory. I've deleted the cache directory and
did several full clear/rescans, but get the same results.

I believe that slimserver applies album artwork found in a folder
(embedded in id3 tag or as seperate jpg) to all tracks in that folder.
Either delete the artwork from the one song or change your directory
structure. IMHO keeping thousands of files in one folder is not a very
good idea anyway (performance, file browsing).

SlimServer running overnight and the cache had expanded to 500MB,
leaving 0 bytes free on my hard drive.

I then ran a slightly modified version of your script, to save the
cachedump.txt file to my D drive, which has plenty of space.

Oddly, during the course of running the script the cache reduced to
44MB. The content of cachedump.txt was:

Note: all of the above activities were carried out without any ative

that's the case, you have less than 5% free space. Many programs will
not be able to run at all.

SlimServer is obviously misbehaving, but if your hard drive is really
that full it's not to blame.

There are a fair amount of programs that would have difficulty with
less than 5% free space on the drive. For one thing, you can't
defragment the drive anymore and it may be very badly fragmented.
Perhaps Windows doesn't have enough room to generate an appropriate
pagefile either.

500 MB of free space sounds like a lot, but for an entire computer OS
partition these days it isn't.

[slim] Can't get iTunes playlists

2006-10-05 Thread randybrand

I recently upgraded to 6.5.0. When doing so, I un-checked the box to
automatically start Slimserver (I thought it was for the interface).
After realizing my mistake, I tried to set slimserver to automatically
start but could not find where to do so. So I re-installed 6.5.0 on
top of the previous installation. That's when my problems started.

I am running XP pro on a P4 1.8 with 1 gig RAM and plenty of hard disk
space. I rip and manage my music with iTunes and set the server to use
iTunes music library and playlists. The music library loads fine, but
none of my playlists come in.

I tried going back to 6.3.1 but still could not get my playlists. I
have gone back to 6.5.0 and still cannot get the playlists. I have
done a clear and rescan (takes many hours).

Any help here please? Also, when I reloaded 6.5 on top of the earlier
installation all of the interfaces were screwed up. That problem seems
to have been corrected through the re-installations.

[slim] Browse Files ?

2006-10-05 Thread Ken Stuart
Hello,

I happen to not have my music files arranged in a Media Library with
Playlists. I have music files all over 3 hard disk drives.

Often, the thing that I want to listen to with SlimServer is something that I
just acquired - an MP3 file that someone sent me, or a podcast that I
downloaded to my PC in MP3 form, are two examples.

I don't want a program to scan through all 3 hard disk drives, and catalog all
the hundreds of music files, each time that I want to listen one new music file.

What I want to do is just to browse my hard drive(s), find the file and load
it.

In Winamp, I can do this with File-Play File...

Is there some plugin to SlimServer (or option unknown to me) that will allow me
to simply open a file on my hard drive ?

Thanks,

[slim] Use iTunes doesn't work

2006-10-05 Thread donmesserli

I am using iTunes under Windows XP.
My iTunes music folder is at E:\My Music\iTunes\...
iTunes puts the music in a subdirectory under that folder; however it
puts its XML and ITL files in C:\Documents and Settings\Don\My
Documents\My Music\iTunes\...

If I leave the Music Folder blank and choose Use iTunes, it can't
find any music.

If I put E:\My Music in Music Folder and choose Use iTunes, it
can't fins any music.

If I put E:\My Music in Music Folder and choose Use iTunes AND copy
the XML and ITL files to E:\My Music\iTunes it finds all of my music,
but not all of the iTunes playlists.

The third way of doing it is the best; but still not perfect. PLUS, I
would have to copy my XML and ITL files to my E: drive everytime my
iTunes Library changed.

Why doesn't this just work?

Don

Any way to work around the bug without getting the nightly build?

I'd rather make a copy of the default skin with a change to it, if

Here are the two changes made to fix the problem:

http://svn.slimdevices.com/?rev=9996view=rev
http://svn.slimdevices.com/?rev=10006view=rev

note that the change to Slim/Web/Pages is not required, 996 does a
change 10006 reverts it. All changes are in the html/javascript so
you can easily make the same changes to 6.5.0 with a text editor and
have them take effect with a simple browser refresh.

Hi

This is not uncommon - I had exactly the same problem - I could see the
artwork when looking at individual albums, but not when browsing. I
fixed it by using Mp3tag software, and retagging my music collection
with the artwork under extended tags. A bit of a pain, but now works
fine.

good luck

[slim] Be Careful With ITUNES7

2006-10-05 Thread damned006

Hi everybody,

If you experience problems with :

- Albums in No genre categorie
- ArtWork
- More generally, not all your albums found correctly in Slimserver

-- It's ITUNES7 fault ! and maybe not slimserver 6.5.

Everything worked fine (and work now) with slimserver 6.3 and itune
6.05 but with Itunes7 all the album i add manually a cover appeared as
NO GENRE in slimserver + only these covers appeared in Artwork.

Even with Itunes 6 back i experienced those problems, only with albums
i add manually a cover with itunes7 (grrr)

To go back to normal :

-- Get rid of itunes 7 AND
* in ServerSettings :
C:\Documents and Settings\Moi\Mes documents\Ma musique\iTunes

* in serversettings/itunes music library
C:\Documents and Settings\Moi\Mes documents\Ma musique\iTunes\iTunes
Music Library.xml

* in iTunes Music Folder :
Leave BLANK

Now everything's back to normal. Hope it helps

PS. Im'sure you can translate the few french words ;-)

PS2. Hope one day i'll use itunes7 and latest slimserver but...

[slim] Re: Streaming radio ok, streaming from server not ok

2006-10-05 Thread vsu

I did all kinds of trouble shooting hoping to find out that something
else but the reach of my wireless is tha problem, but it seems that you
are right.

Now, I still feel stupid, because I don't understand this:
If the signal dropped all the bleeding time, causing interruptions, I
would understand why the communication buffers, skips, stales, play and
then skips again.
But: in my case I just happen to have a low, constant, never dropping
signal and the result is the same... Why?
Can I get a quasi-techno explanation on this?

So I can understand why drops to 0% signal will produce hicups. I can
even understand why craming lots of datacom into a limited bandwith
would produce hicup.

What I can not understand, intuitively, is why a weak signal produces
hicups...

Please bear with my stupidity, and if you feel in a generous mood,
please give it a shot at enlightning me.

[slim] Re: Streaming radio ok, streaming from server not ok

2006-10-05 Thread Mark Lanctot

Bandwidth decreases with dropping signal strength, and dropping signal
strength occurs over distance.

So you just don't have enough bandwidth due to the distance.

The Squeezebox is trying to do what it can. When you play a song,
there's an initial burst of data in an attempt to fill the buffer.
What happens in your case is that the player plays faster than the low
bandwidth can refill the buffer, so the buffer empties.

You will find that due to random chance, sometimes it will be better
than others. Not all FLACs are 1000 kbps, and environmental factors
like humidity and interference from other devices play a part.

[slim] Re: Streaming radio ok, streaming from server not ok

2006-10-05 Thread radish

In a wireless network there's a relationship between the
strength/cleanliness of the signal and the amount of data you can get
through it. Think of two people shouting at each other over a distance.
The further away they are, the quieter the sound and the harder it is to
make out what the other person's saying. You have to keep repeating
things and so the speed at which you can actually communicate useful
information drops.

Now to playback audio we need a completely constant stream of data at a
given rate (which depends on the format used - as discussed FLAC
requires a much higher rate than MP3). Because little breaks and errors
are present in ALL network types (including wired and wireless) the SB
contains a buffer. When you start playing it first fills the buffer,
and then plays from that - so any little glitches are ironed out.

If you need an analogy for a buffer, think of a store checkout clerk.
They handle customers at a fixed rate regardless of how busy the store
is. A buffer is like the queue in a busy store. Even if new customers
join the queue at uneven intervals (say 5 join at once, then a few
minutes later another couple join) the clerk will still serve people at
the same constant rate as long as people are waiting - the queue irons
out the inconsistency in supply. In this analogy the slimserver is
providing the customers (data packets) into the queue (the buffer) for
processing by the clerks (player).

This explains how the buffer works to cope with short, unexpected drops
in the rate of arrival of data. But your case is different. In your
case the _average_ rate of arrival in the buffer is less than the rate
at which data is being taken out. So the store is quiet and very few
customers are joining the queue. In this case there will be times when
the queue is empty and the clerk has no-one left to serve - and that's
when you hear a dropout.

Hope that made some sense :) To summarise - your data rate is constant
but lower than the data rate of the file, and so the buffer frequently
drains causing the dropouts.

That's the way it works with SlimServer as well. My guess is that the

Is there any music in the current music folder? If not, try setting
the network folder as your music folder. If SlimServer can read it,
then you should be good to go. My guess is that it can't and you'll
get an error message when trying to designate the folder.

If SlimServer is running as a Windows service, then you'll probably
need to use a UNC path to designate the network folder, whether as a
shortcut or when directly designated as the Music Folder.

A UNC path looks like:

\\Server_Name\Share_Name

or

\\Server_Name\Share_Name\Directory

you've got old templates lying around.

delete Plugins/RandomPlay/HTML/Default and
Plugins/RandomPlay/HTML/Fishbone

all that should be left if Plugins/RandomPlay/HTML/EN/

and you'll need to clear your caches and restart the server to wipe out
it's filecache.

6.5.1 nightly builds should be removing these files now.

When you say clear caches, you mean Delete Temporary Internet files?
Thanks kdf!

might be it. I'm not an IE user. Usually any old cached info will
clear up with a few clicks of the refresh button, or a SHIFT-reload.
you'll know when that string warning stops appearing. Also, becuase of
that the Play random artist line doesn't work. The right template
should have that.

Thanks for pointing me to the settings in the web interface. I enabled

Result is the Squeezebox doesn't respond to either remote and the

some way to set the original Squeezebox remote to output jvd-dvd codes
 only.

 How?

 Thanks all.

Nobody seems to have mentioned that in order for this method to work,
you need a JVC DVD remote. (Or a universal remote outputting JVC DVD
codes)

Re: [slim] Re: iTunes WAV - AIFF adds volume adjustment field info

2006-10-05 Thread Steven Spies

Newer versions of iTunes will add the sound check tag to all files
it knows how to tag. This includes AIFF but not WAV. It does not
matter if sound check is turned on or off in iTunes like it used to.

OK, take one of your WAV files and save it to your desktop. Rename it.
Then add it back into your iTunes library. Check the properties, just
the name should be set. Now convert it to AIFF. Check with SS for
volume adjustment - sure as hell shouldn't be any.

Steve.

[slim] Re: Turn off artwork in 6.5?

2006-10-05 Thread Jim Larson

Well, I couldn't wait for the weekend -- I got up to speed on mp3tag
tonight, learned about using the \ to create sub-directories from the
tag fields, fixed a few more tags, then let it rip on restructuring all
my tunes. Amazing how well that went - I've now got a nicely organized
\My Music directory. Only a few duplicate songs now remain at the root
level. I even grabbed a few album covers off of Amazon.

I then did a clear/rescan in slimserver, and voila, my artwork problem
is gone!
Thank you slimpy and aubuti!
