Re: [slim] Problem with character-sets on the CLI

2007-02-24 Thread jimwillsher

Don't get me wrong, I think SlimServer is excellent. I have an SB3,
having previously had an SB2 and an SB1. But Perl is almost exclusively
the realm of *nix platforms; very very little perl stuff is every
written for Windows systems. Windows development is typically done in
C/C++, which is what I'm using.

But fortunately there are standards, and in this case the standard is
UTF-8. As such, I can now successfully interface my C+ code with the
output form the CLI.

[slim] For the $2000 Transporter, are Slim Devices serious about the user interface?

2007-02-24 Thread clarkc

Apologies if this subject has been chewed over in the past. I have
looked around in the forums here but see mostly micro detail rather
than the big picture.

I am looking to move to PC-based audio and have been researching how
best to do this. The Slim Devices Transporter seems to be a great
product in many ways. For example, the absolute level of audio quality
is important for me and the Transporter has reviewed very well in this
respect. The device also offers great connectivity along with fine
aesthetics which, compared to some of the other PC-based audio products
around, is a real plus for those who care about their living room
environment.

But now to my question: For a $2000 device, are Slim Devices serious
about the user interface?

I have spent time downloading Slim Server software and have tried it
out briefly with SoftSqueeze to see how it works. IMHO it seems more
like something produced by an enthusiastic hobbyist rather than a
leading exponent of cutting edge audiophile technology. To me, it is
extremely clunky, slow and visually challenged to say the least. The
fact that so many Slim fans have invested such amazing energy into
developing plugins/addons/skins, etc, to address this deficit is
testimony to this.

I have also looked at the Sonos approach along with other media s/w
offerings (e.g. iTunes, JRiver) and I am simply amazed at the
differences. Having put such thought into the look and feel of the
hardware and endowed the Transporter with so many outstanding features,
it seems a real shame that the product is let down by such a primitive
UI. This has unfortunately put my purchase decision in doubt.

Does this ring a bell with anybody else? Perhaps I am missing
something?

[slim] I'm also seeing music stuttering.

2007-02-24 Thread Andy C

The stuttering isn't regular and appears fairly random. It could be only
once every few hours for 30 seconds, or on and off for a period of a few
hours. It isn't machine utilisation since during the last period of
stuttering (stats below) it could almost no CPU usage on the machine.

Is there any other info I can gather to try diagnose this? I guess in
the absence of any other advice my next step will be trying to run a
network cable to the Squeezebox, although that will be a pain in the
butt.

Andy C

2007-02-24 Thread w4rren

I#8217;m afraid I can#8217;t offer any technical explanations, and can
see no logic as too why there should be any connection between adjusting
IP settings and what seems like a power failure to the squeezebox.

However, I can pin-point the time of my squeezebox crashing to
assigning the squeezebox and server an IP address within my router
(previously I had given a static IP to squeezebox and server running
slim).

After a post from Ur[s]uS: #8230;If the IP address of the slimserver
computer changes, once Power On is pressed, the SB3 attempts to
connect, but collapses into what looks like turned off#8230;, I
realised this was the same as had happened to mine. I#8217;d guess
it#8217;s most likely to be a power issue and coincidence, but if
it#8217;s documented and anyone else has this problem after changing
IP settings#8230;

I agree that the interface isn't wonderful in either version, but I
suspect you are using the Web browser, which is really best used only
for initial settings. Skins are only relevant to this. Plugins
primarily provide extra functionality that will interest some people,
they mostly don't alter the interface.

Re: [slim] For the $2000 Transporter, are Slim Devices serious about the user interface?

2007-02-24 Thread ModelCitizen

If you're serious enough about your audio quality to buy a Transporter
it's unlikely you'll have a PC in your listening room, so you'll use
the remote (especially considering the Transporter's dual screens). The
remote and dual LCD screens are superb.

The default web skin is really embarrasing and lets the Squeezebox down
badly. Change it for Firefox Tan or the brand new Flash based and
extremely promising SlimFX (download from plugin page I should think).

I am certain that Logica will be currently addressing the default web
interface issue. It's so obviously the weakest point of the whole thing
it would be very odd if they weren't. Maybe the will take on/have taken
on the SlimFX developer.

Hello,
i had yesterday a similar problem.
My SB3 was behaving normally, except that it would no longer playing
music anymore (not from my Slimserver, neither from the Internet).
After several attemts to re-configure my network / restarts / factory
reset etc, i tried pushing the 1 button while performing power-on.
The result was that i got the message programming Xilinx on the
display.
After that, the SB3 acted normally again.
Maybe you can try this out as well.
Note that is might not work for SB1 as the HW is completely different.
best regards,

Many thanks for the comments.

Perhaps my analysis is superficial but I stand by my main conclusion.
It seems also that nobody else is really disagreeing with my basic
point about the UI.

Well, buy a Sonos then...
The Sonos remote is nice, but the system is closed and inflexible and
this probably won't improve any time soon. A matter of design

You make the choice...

Do I detect a note of indignation? :) I appreciate that I am amongst
the converted here :) Peter, yes, I fully agree that the Sonos approach
is closed and much less flexible. But still, providing flexibility is no
excuse IMHO for such a poor interface, particularly at this price
level.

Are you using the Web interface or the remote control? Softsqueeze
does have an on-screen version of the remote.

Yes, I have been focussing on the web interface but have tried the s/w
remote briefly. The display on the Transporter itself is definitely
well-thought out and looks good. This, no doubt, ensures good usability
with the remote.

The remote and dual LCD screens are superb.

This is the proof, very encouraged to hear this ! It appears that the

Re: [slim] SlimTray.exe unresponsive and huge

2007-02-24 Thread bpa

More details on the nature of the problem.

The issue of slimtray not releasing handles occurs in the versions of
slimtray in 6.5.1 and latest nightly 6.5.2. It does not happen in 6.3.

The problem happens on a clean system (i.e. only 3rd party s/w running
was Acronis backup scheduler - no AV or other s/w) with a clean
install of slimserver with no library and slimserver not running.

As y360 noted - every 10 secs slimtray gets a handle for each process
running on the PC but doesn't release them. Using the sysinternals
handle tool - all the unreleased handles can be detailed and they are
handles to processes.

[slim] Fixing memor leak

2007-02-24 Thread FCLymond

Hi.

I am running 6.5.0 in Windows XP. I use the XM plugin , Alien BBC, and
the SuperDateTime plugin. I have noticed a significant memory leak when
I run slim.exe, to the point where it builds to over 200K in a short
period of time, even when I'm not using the Squeezebox.

One fix I've noticed suggested is to wipe the prefs file. How do I do
this?

[slim] The music stopped!

2007-02-24 Thread dansumption

I am using a Squeezebox2 and running SlimServer 6.5.1 on Windows, I've
been using it succesfully (and before this, a SliMP3) for several
years.

Recently, the music has stopped. In the past when I've had problems
like this, it seems to be down to network problems between the player
and server, or excessive server load, but that doesn't seem to be the
case this time.

I can browse the library from the server or the player without any
delay, I can select any song, album or artist, and add them to a
playlist, the song details will appear on the player's Now Playing
screen, but it never actually plays the song: the progress bar doesn't
move along at all, the VU meter shows no sound being played, obviously
I cannot hear anything being played, and if I leave it, it will show as
playing the same song all day long without ever moving on to the next
song in the playlist.

I have checked that it's not paused, and I have restarted the server,
but I can't think of anything else which could be causing this. Advice,
please?

Re: [slim] Cassini Web Server

2007-02-24 Thread Mark Lanctot

No, these are two separate things. SlimServer is written entirely in
perl, Cassini is written in Microsoft .NET:

http://www.asp.net/projects/cassini/download/

The server -itself- appears to be legitimate, and it would certainly be
an unusual choice for malware (highly visible and requires .NET) but it
is definitely not a part of SlimServer.

The test - I think - to see if unit is not Dead: unplug and plug in

then Squeezebox 3. If this does not happen, I guess there is a
different problem (with power socket, plug or SB3 unit).

Sorry I cannot be more help.

Thanks all.
I have tried it with two different power supplies in two different
outlets...nothing.

One thought I had, and I did send this to slim support as well, is
any chance it could just be the remote?

Here's why I ask: I have been having a problem since 6.5.1 came out
where the SB will not connect to SS without several restarts (pushing
the power button multiple times, but you do get the connecting to ss
line on the screen)..so, for some reason, SS will not 'wake up' the SB
anyway. Bug http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3778 has the
info, and I have commented it several times.

Make sense what I'm thinking? SS wakeup doesn't work due to above bug,
and now, remote doesn't work, so there's no way to start it up at all?

That was just another thought, I have an RMA and am going to send it in
anyway, but thought I would throw that out there.

Thanks again,
Bruce

However there are some issues when I use both ID3v1 and ID3v2

2007-02-24 Thread Nostromo

The Transporter's main UI, the remote, is superb. Once you get the hang
of it, you'll see how good it is. Don't forget that you can customize
the menus and you can download plugins like Lazy search and song
scanner.

Now I never tried the SONOS's remote, but I wouldn't say its more
polished. Its certainly slicker, flashier more aesthecially pleasing.
One thing I like about it, though, is that you can see the album art
while browsing your music collection. We are visual animals, after all.
But I'm not sure its a better remote overall, though. I'm willing to bet
that I can find a track faster with my Squeezebox's remote than with a
SONOS remote.

is a pretty flexible product.

I don't see a native Windows/Mac/*NIX front end being that useful

2007-02-24 Thread Kyle

To the OP, I say, Hear, hear! The web UI is not what it should be,
and I trust Slim Devices or Streaming Media or whomever is making
improvements. My situation is a little different than most. My SB3 is
in the den with my stereo, where I do my serious listening, but it also
feeds my whole-house audio system, so I do most of my listening away
from the SB3 and thus use the web UI a great deal. It leaves a lot to
be desired. SlimFX and Moose are on the right track in separating the
control functions from the setup functions. I'd love a Sonos or Bose
style remote that I could take anywhere in the house and have control
over my system. Logitich, I hope, is working on that. The SB3 is a
great little device, but there is definitely room for improvement in
the UI.

This would be a more efficient way to get the desired outcome:

PHP code:

  if (Win32::Service::GetStatus( '',$key, \%status)) {

  print $key is not present\n;
  }

$key needs to be the shortname of the service, not the slim.exe name.

Sorry to disagree but flash isn't the be all end all you're suggesting,
and I'm generally a big proponent of it. IMO its biggest asset is as a
browser equalizer. I.e. if people can't see the movie, they have to
upgrade flash/browser- so no more least common denominator. That's not
usually considered best practice in web design, but this isn't really
web design I suppose.

Don't get me wrong, SlimFX looks great- but so does nokia and touch,
and fishbone and default for that matter. I prefer things designed to
standards, so feel the ideal default web interface would scale to
devices without manually having to switch skins- and of course while
running very quickly (which flex seems adept at, but so does ajax in a
more standards compliant way- I'd imagine). It seems like a more solid
foundation for the front end, or the default version anyway.

Web interfacing will continue to be useful and is continually advancing
around here without help from 'pros'. It would seem like contracting
some programmers to write a windows and mac app would be more cost
effective than an in-house web designer who may or may not be at odds
ideologically with people who write skins. I'm sure I'm assuming way to
much about how things work around there, so sorry if way off base.

[slim] Slim Server won't open

2007-02-24 Thread Bradyco

I have used my Squeezebox3 without problems for the past year until
recently when I changed Routers. Now, I can not access the SlimServer
software using my web browser as no page is displayed. (Only once did
I get the SlimServer page which said it couldn't find the Squeezebox.
Every other time, no page comes up at all.) Also tried using:
http://127.0.0.1:9000/ and got same result.

Some details:

-- Win XP SP2
-- SlimServer 6.5.1
-- Squeezebox Network works well including with Rhapsody so I am
clearly getting an Internet signal from Squeezebox. The desktop also
has full access to Internet.
-- Music is located on my desktop. When I ping the Squeezbox from that
computer, all 4 packets are received with no delay.
-- SlimTray.exe appears in Task Manager
-- Firewall: Norton Internet Security 2007
-- old Router was: NetGear RO218 (wired only)
-- new Router is: NearGear WNR834B (wired wireless)
-- both Squeezebox and Desktop are on WIRED part of my system (I only
use wireless for one notebook which has no connection to my Squeezebox
system)

What I have tried:

-- I tried reloading SlimServer 6.5.1 and the system worked until I
shut my desktop off for the night and re-started it the next morning.

-- I then tried removing all SlimServer software, rebooting, and then
loading SlimServer 6.5.1. Result was same as before.

-- I tried shutting off Norton Internet Security component by component
(firewall, spyware, etc.) all at once. This had no effect on my
problem.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated as my Squeezebox is one of my
most prized possessions.

I am running 6.5.0 in Windows XP.

Please update to the latest release (6.5.1).

I use the XM plugin , Alien BBC, and
the SuperDateTime plugin. I have noticed a significant memory leak when
I run slim.exe, to the point where it builds to over 200K in a short
period of time, even when I'm not using the Squeezebox.

Can you reproduce this issue with 6.5.1 and those plugins disabled? If
not, can you reproduce it with them enabled?

One fix I've noticed suggested is to wipe the prefs file. How do I do
 this?

Delete the slimserver.prefs file (you'll find it in the SlimServer
installation folder) after stopping slimserver.

Re: [slim] For the $2000 Transporter, are Slim Devices serious about the user interface?

2007-02-24 Thread peterw

clarkc;183072 Wrote:

 UI.

First, I'm a little amused at the thought that you expect an
audiophile component to have a UI that's not clunky. It's been a
long time since I read audiophile publications, but my impression has
always been that the more highly regarded, and more expensive,
audiophile gear tends to be very simple, minimalist even. If anything,
to me the Transporter looks too fancy to be a real piece of audio
gear!

Second, I'm taken aback that you're putting so much weight on the UI of
an audiophile product. If you're going to play 128k MP3 files, the
Transporter is probably overkill, and you don't need audiophile gear.
But if you want a quality digital transport that will bring out the
best of your carefully ripped lossless tracks, there's no substitute
for seeing how the actual gear *sounds* in your audio rack.

Third, you should note that SoftSqueeze is a good piece of software for
getting a general feel for how players work, and a wonderful app for
those of us developing plugins for Slimserver, but it is much more
clunky that the real hardware. The visualizer and display is somewhat
jumpy, the app takes wads of CPU resources, etc. You should expect more
smooth performance out of real Slim hardware.

Fourth, I don't see the availability of plugins as evidence of flaws in
Slim's offerings. I see this as a strength of Slim's business model.
They provide first rate mid-range (Squeezebox) and high-end
(Transporter) audio gear and, rather than lock users in to their
preconceived UI notions like an ill-designed DVD, they leave the
controlling software open to modification and extension by users. This
means we customers can better make the gear work the way we like.

I also find it amusing to see all the UI arguments in this forum --
people who want remotes with displays ala Sonos; people who want slick
Ajax web GUIs; people who think the IR remote control is fine. One of
the beauties of Slim's system is that all these ways of controlling the
system are available (if only from third parties), so you cna use what
you like. Get a Windows tablet/UMPC and run Moose if you want, or buy a
PepperPad3 and use SlimFX, or use SailingClicker on your Windows Mobile
PDA, or integrate with a whole-house Creston control system, or use the
IR remote, or build (or convince someone to build) something better.
(You'll find examples on these forums of customers asking for software
and others providing that software -- for free.)

Fifth, the server-based Slim architecture allows for easily upgrading
the system capability. Not only that, but Slim has consistently
released new versions of software that support *all their hardware*,
back to the original SliMP3 players. Their business model is based on
growth -- getting new customers and convincing existing customers to
buy more gear -- rather than a planned obsolescence model.

Don't get me wrong, SlimFX looks great- but so does nokia and touch,

But they're far from the least common denominator: Fishbone needs a large
screen, and all of them use a lot of JavaScript - which requires a very
recent browser.

I think that as well as these skins a Flash based skin is very
reasonable as an _alternative_ to the main UI. And I do like SlimFX a lot.

(which flex seems adept at, but so does ajax in a
more standards compliant way- I'd imagine).

I see the main difference in the more open nature of AJAX, whereas Flash
needs a certain plugin by a certain supplier.

6.5.1 is the current SlimServer version version. This uses FW72

What version of SlimServer are you running? I would suggest upgrading
to 6.5.1

There is a way to force slimserver to accept a different firmware
version in a SB but i've never needed to so it so can't remember what
file you need to edit. There are several threads on the subject though.

standards, so feel the ideal default web interface would scale to
devices without manually having to switch skins- and of course while
running very quickly (which flex seems adept at, but so does ajax in a
more standards compliant way- I'd imagine). It seems like a more solid
foundation for the front end, or the default version anyway.

Flash or AJAX, I don't care what technology they use, as long as they
make the web UI as responsive as Slimfx. OTOH, AJAX seems like very
hard work. But with flash, we already have it. Its there before our
eyes. And it already features drag drop. But I wasn't aware that
there could be compatibility issues with a flash-based skin. Does it
mean that someone couldn't use it on a Nokia tablet? Maybe it couldn't
be the default skin.

BTW, I didn't mean to denigrate the work of the fine folk who designed
the skins. They did a great job. But someone who studied in interface
design could help pinpoint the UI flaws. I'm sure some UI flaws will
be due to ideological differences, but there are also objective UI
flaws.

2007-02-24 Thread kbang

Hi,

I have been using the default Slimserver webinterface as only way of
control for some time now. I am running an Ubuntu 1000MHZ VIA EPIA
server and I feel that the web UI is wery responsive both when playing
FLAC and streaming audio. There are some bugs but I still consider it
stable. I don't agree that it's an awful interface but there are places
for improvement in everything of course :-)

My wife didn't really understand the default web interface so she is
using the Nokia770 skin and I think she is pretty happy with it.

2007-02-24 Thread konut

Its a catch 22. If you want something thats easy then the design has to
be simple enough for even those that don't understand how everything
works to use it. Thats why the WaveRadio sells well. The problem is
that a lot of people, who want superior performance, will not take the
time to understand what it takes to achieve. Its like any subject. The
more you find out about it, the more you realize there IS to find out
about it. As clunky as it is, SlimServer gives you the flexibility to
achieve superior results. If you don't want to take the time to find
out, that represents laziness on your part. No one said it was going to
be easy. If they did, they were lying.

But they're far from the least common denominator: Fishbone needs a

 recent browser.

I think that as well as these skins a Flash based skin is very
reasonable as an _alternative_ to the main UI. And I do like SlimFX a
 lot.

Sorry, I meant flash can be used to display something coherent acrosss
platforms, and it will be all or none (given screen real estate).
Screen size will be a limitation for any default browser though, which
made me wonder if there is some kind of sniffer module built in to ss.

I see the main difference in the more open nature of AJAX, whereas
 Flash
needs a certain plugin by a certain supplier.

[slim] Displaying lyrics with linebreaks in the songinfo window

2007-02-24 Thread rmariger

I would like to display lyrics with linebreaks in the songinfo window.
That issue was addressed in another thread last October
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28160) and the solution
was to make a simple modification to songinfo.html. However, in the
Slimserver directory there are 8 files with that name, 2 of which
appear to be associated with alternatives to the default interface
skin. (The subdirectory defining the default skin does not include a
file songinfo.html.) If using the default skin, is it necessary to
change all 6 versions of songinfo.html?

I am using version 6.5.0 of slimserver.

Thanks,
Randy

Change the one in EN and that will work for all skins that don't have a
songinfo.html file of their own. If you wish to use a skin that has
it's own songinfo.html file, then you'll need to modify that one.
Default skin, relies on the one in EN. All skins fall back to EN
whenever a template is not found in the skin directory.

Is your problem

(1) slimserver is running but you can't access it from the web
interface

or

(2) you can't get slimserver to run?

Is it perhaps possible that your setting is not to start slimserver

Try starting slimserver from slimtray - you may need to refresh the
browser a few times as there is/was a problem where the browser would
start up before slimserver is ready...

I've been bleating on about this for a while now. I agree with the OP.
One thing I've always been surprised about is that the Slim approach is
to be open; yet around the interface it's taken that the limited remote
control and monochrome display is all one will want.

I've built set top boxes which would be great integrating to Slim in a
kiosk style with a lovely large screen TV.

I'm not surprised, after all the Squeezebox/Transporter is probably how
they make their money. Why provide a better UI for people so they can
avoid buying their products?

2007-02-24 Thread amcluesent

Having bought a SB3, it's been interesting to read other posts about the
chasm between the quality of SB3/Transporter and the rickety 6.x

Given the growing number of suppliers of UPnP mediaServers and players,
this made me wonder just what is the Unique Selling Proposition of Slim
Devices?

The J.River Media Centre is way ahead of Slimserver in look feel,
most of the NAS boxes offer am easy route to installing a mediaserver
like TwonkyMusic etc.

IMHO, Slimdevices need position themselves for the interoperable
mass-market ASAP or risk losing their early-mover advantage as media
server s/w become a commodity offering on NAS boxes and the rumoured

Hey guys, before i start, id like to say i have searched the forums

Ok, so today my dad went to a Hi-Fi show, and he saw someone

He was very impressed by this, and would also like to do this, the guy
recommended the N800 as its practically the same, just faster

So my question is, how do you get this to do it (if there is a link you
can redirect to, that would be good also)

apparently the N770 was displaying album art, album details, track
details etc, so i don't think its just the same as going to the
slimserver URL - however I'm not sure (As i don't use a Squeezebox)

Thanks for any help on this

There can be some special 24/96 discs and of course DVD-A discs are
completely different, but a run-of-the-mill video DVD uses 24/48.

Re: [slim] SB3 for sale - wired, white x2 + Linkstation

2007-02-24 Thread mawfin

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I bought a high speed dLAN kit. Pricey but does the trick. (First I
had to learn all about the Windows XP network bridge and how to force
my wireless NIC into compatability mode). So, the wired SB3s have had
a reprieve.

Next challenge is to get the power management working properly on the
media PC that acts as a server. (Sleep when nothing is on, including
the SB3, wake on LAN, and all that stuff.) This has been an ongoing
discussion topic on the forums so I hope to have it licked soon.

Reverting back to 6.5 fixed the problem both times.

Sorry if this is mentioned elsewhere but I couldn't locate anything

Other info:
SS running on WinXP
FLAC libray (mostly)
SB on wireless

Re: [slim] Nokia N800 Remote

Actually it is as simple as opening the Nokia's web browser and pointing
it to the slimserver URL. And for best effect, use the Nokia770 skin
that Ben Klaas has developed, which also works fine on the 800. It is
designed for the Nokia's screen size, and has a lot of other nice
touches.

It's really a matter of timeshifting. Note that only advantage between
the first test (straight dictionary attack) and the second (precomputed
dictionary attack) is that the data set can be recycled for a given
SSID.

If you change your SSID to not be stock, then the dictionary will need
to be recomputed.

If you change your passphrase to not be one of the ones in the
dictionary, it will still not succeed.

Which brings it back down to don't choose lame-ass passwords, which
is already known. This attack only makes using lame-ass passwords with
stock SSID's weaker.

[slim] In random, my SB3 plays only a few songs

Hi All,

My girlfriend likes random (as in music hehehehe).
She selects an album (with the remote) and presses play, song 1
starts.
Then she selects other albums and presses +.
After selecting the albums, she presses the shuffle until it says
Shuffle by song.
When I look at the SB interface with my PC, I see that the list is
shuffeled.
After about 5-10 songs, the SB stops playing as if it's at the end of
the list.
Why is this ?

Device is SB3, SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN -
cp1252, Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt, Player Firmware Version: 64.

[slim] Everything is running fine!!

2007-02-24 Thread herbman

I figured this forum could use a message like this. Please list
slimserver specs and library specs if everything is fine for you!

Device: Original SliMP3
Library: 3722 albums with 50888 songs by 1257 artists
SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - RedHat - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.6 i386-linux-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.21-standard

Athlon XP 1700+, 512M RAM, running Fedora Core 3
Music Storage is 4 * 250GB Hitachi SATA on a HighPoint 1640 RAID-5
Controller

I play music all the time, and am currently enjoying Global
Communication's lovely ambience. No stutters, *ever*. Using a netgear
wge111 to talk 802.11g over WPA to a linksys wrt54G that the server is
wired to.

The MySQL 5.x work with SlimServer 6.5 has made a huge difference from
the SQlite days, and obviously light years from the 5.x stuff.

Kudos, slim team and thanks! I wish my device would break so I had an
excuse to get a sb3 (or whatever's next!)
