Re: [slim] Why is SlimServer so slow?

On a similar note, does the new Controller interface improve the
response time at all? Would I get performance similar experience to my
iPod? I have an iPod Classic 160GB with about 5,000 songs and the
response is pretty much instantaneous.

I agree that the future effort of Slimserver development should
concentrate on slimming down its CPU/memory footprint and streamlining
its performance.

Further to this idea of scrolling as the main advantage. Can you scroll
without album art, thus seeing many more lines at a time? In fact how
many lines of songs can you see on the controller's screen? (I dont see

as that in the 7.0 squeezebox SC displays eg music library playlists

[slim] Squeezecenter won't start on Vista 64

2008-03-09 Thread starbuck

Have just done the upgrade from slimserver to squeezecenter 7(official
build).
When I try and start squeezecenter, it shows on taskbar that
squeezecenter is starting and does nothing else. Left it half an hour
and it still says squeezecenter is starting.

Tried the nightly update from the 8th and still does the same thing, it
won't start. Slimserver used to run fine and I have run the beta version
of squeezecenter 7 before and that has run ok as well.

[slim] SBC not observing daylight savings time

2008-03-09 Thread Mitch Harding
My SC computer has moved its clock ahead one hour (as have my other
computers, my cell phone, etc) but for some reason the SBC still shows the
old time. I guess it makes sense that it's not like the SB3, and instead
has its own internal clock rather than relying on the SC computer for the
time. However, how can I get it to sync up with the SC clock? Or how can I
tell it to adjust itself for daylight savings?

Not really a big deal -- I just noticed it when I walked by the SBC on its
cradle and saw that the time was wrong.

that's enough to get art in Slimserver - as it will have less impact on

Your server can't handle converting the high bitrate AAC in realtime

Having owned both ipods and other players i think that's a bit unfair.
Apple sell a complete, simple, user experience and the out-of-the-box
experience with iTunes is great - the rip/download art/organise library
in sensible folders all works really well. Integration with podcasts is
painless - even to auto deletion of stuff you've listened to. What
*most* end users want is simplicity itself and that's why it sells.

I'll admit to being puzzled by their artwork approach - it seems
needlessly complicated - but using iTunes and an iPod it works
seamlessly with no user input required for 95% of my library

good reviews in What Hi-Fi SV over here, but by no means a critical

It is most likely that the Denon is doing something to the CD that
makes it sound nicer to your ears. Even though the final stage is in
the AMP this still applies. Like the way somepeople prefer the sound of
MP3's to CD's (can't understand that one myself!) owing to the
psycho-acoustics and the emphasis that seems to occur on bass tones.
Either way its all a matter of what your ears are most used to, and
what you perceive as better in sound quality.

Re: [slim] Bug: Settings don't stick in Opera

2008-03-09 Thread strindberg

I think I found the problem: Opera doesn't seem to save cookies for
raw ip addresses.

I usually connect to the (private) ip address of my SC:
http://192.168.1.8:9000. After checking all the settings in Opera, and
restarting a couple of times, I noticed that all the cookies set by SC
were lost on every restart.

I changed the address to the local name of the SC server:
http://august:9000, and now the cookies last over a restart. Go
figure.

So I suppose this puts it down to a Opera bug (or feature?).

 Nic

I never said I had a audiophile CD player and although a reasonable
good DAC it isn't used here because I use the DAC of the receiver.
I was just wondering where the sound difference comes from and didn't
expect CD players or multi purpose DVD players to tweak the sound with
their own 'sound' like you said. That would mean every CD player around
is not creating the original sound like it is suppose to do?

[slim] Desire Advice: SB drops out

2008-03-09 Thread utowana

I have a problem that just does not seem to go away. I have a 3 SB
household, two of which (one wired and one wireless) stream effectively
and in an uninterrupted way. The third, located furthest away from my
Belkin Pre-N wireless router, takes as long as a minute to start
playing (I load something from the server, the VU meter shows streaming
(deflection) but no sound, and often drops out after about 2 minutes of
playing, will stay silent for as long as 15 min, and then start playing
again. I'm running SC 7 (downloaded yesterday) and the performance is
identical as with 6.x versions. I'm not a networking expert, but my
working theory has been that it is taking a long time to buffer
enough info to get the stream started, but the behavior I describe
seems to contradict that a bit. I have 58-60% signal strength on the
misbehaving SB. It is on a second floor on the opposite end of the
house, with router located in the corner of the basement (so it punches
thru 2 floors and across the house). I know, not perfect, but all other
wireless devices work nicely with this set up, including another SB and
the laptop I'm typing on.

I've considered purchasing WAP, as I can get a cable to the mid level
of the home, but I don't want the hassle and fussing it would take to
wire the upstairs bedroom.

Any thoughts or advice?

Love my SB's. Have three so the Duet will wait.

Re: [slim] Duet Controller artwork quality - no dithering done?

2008-03-09 Thread dean blackketter
Thanks for the pictures. I'm playing with it in photoshop and put
your image up on the Controller screen.

I see a couple of things:

1. The color banding effects are strong with this particular image.
I was able to reproduce the color pattern closely in photoshop with 32
levels of posterization (approximately 555 encoding). The quality of
the image is definitely improved with a 565 dither.

2. The photo you took appears to be taken from slightly above
perpendicular to the screen. The viewing angle on the Controller LCD
is better from the natural angle when holding the device in your hand,
slightly _below_ perpendicular. I was able to verify that the image
looks a much better when viewed normally in the hand.

So the takeaway is that we can do better by doing a proper dither on
the device from 888 to 565. Also, the viewing angle matters.

the ideal angle seems to be about 45 degrees. Given the function of the

Re: [slim] is it ok to use the web while ripping discs?

Totally OK.

In the early days of CD _burning_, you had to be careful because the
drives had very small buffers. Any activity on the PC could cause it to
run empty and the write would fail completely, because a disc could only
be burned in a single continuous operation.

Ripping is a completely different story. That is a random access,
reading process where interruptions have no effect.

Please get in touch with our support team. The community (including some
Logitech/Slim employees) can help here in the forums, but the support
ninjas will do a much better job and will be able to help one-on-one

That said, it sounds like from your description:

1. The Controller has good signal strength and is connected well.
2. The Receiver is the one having problems (audio cutting out, etc).

How far away is the Receiver from your access point? Is it in a metal
cabinet or in some other place where it would have difficulty
connecting wirelessly?

It's interesting that things got better when you changed your wireless
channel on your access point. I suspect that this is a basic wireless
signal strength issue.

In any case, the support team can walk you through a lot of
troubleshooting and probably get you up and running.

Re: [slim] Sound quality difference CD player vs SB3 FLAC playback?

2008-03-09 Thread dwilliams01

I've got a Dennon DVD 3910 and when I first got my SB3 I did some
side-by-side and blind tests. I made sure that the player had
processing turned off by using the Direct and Pure Direct modes.
There seemed to be a difference between normal and the direct modes
of the player (it was doing something), but I couldn't tell a
difference between the player's direct modes and and the SB3. I always
had the Reciever's (Denon AVR-4306) processing turned on to adjust for
balance, timing, room accoustic handling, etc. I also make sure that
the SB3's volume control doesn't do anything to the digital outputs -
not sure if that would have any impact on precieved sound quality or
richness, though, if the end volume was the kept the same.

I also ripped the CDs to flac using EAC and checked with AccurateRip to
confirm a good rip. I COULD tell a difference between the highest
bitrate mp3 and a CD every time.

On the pratical side it matters little what is right, it is your ears
and perception that is important - perhaps you could adjust your
reciever to process the sound to make it better to your ears? In the
past I've liked modes like Jazz Club, etc. because they give a warmer
feel...

Re: [slim] is it ok to use the web while ripping discs?

2008-03-09 Thread Jeff Flowerday

Just make sure that error checking is on with whaterver software you use
and you should be fine.

I didn't know about error checking in WMP before I started ripping my
2000+ CD collection. Fortunately I found the error of my ways 300 in.
Without error checking in WMP I'd get the odd blast of static when the
drive encountered a problem with a disk. They were pretty infrequent
so infrequent that I didn't hear one for quite a few days of spot
checking via my Zune.

With error checking on it went away completely. Discs in real bad
shape still might cause skipping or drop outs but there isn't much you
can do besides buy a new copy.

I was just wondering where the sound difference comes from and didn't
expect CD players or multi purpose DVD players to tweak the sound with
their own 'sound' like you said. That would mean every CD player around
is not creating the original sound like it is suppose to do?

EDIT: In my opinion (and correct me if I'm wrong) the digital
information is retrieved from the CD and than passed through over the
digital interface without signal processing it. The DAC in the receiver
adds possible coloring but since the DAC used is both used for the CD
signal as the SB signal, where does the difference come from?

Hey, I'm no audiophilanthropist, just pointing something out, hence my
not to shoot your ears down comment! I also acknowledge the fact that
you use the AMPS DAC rather than the Denon's.
Whilst your sentiment about the digital stream *should* be correct,
there are many factors that influence the quality of the stream - just
check out our very own audiophile forum or google on the subject. Who
knows the quality of the jitter on the denon or use of oversampling
etc??!!

Correct.

insight into why it cant be done , how much change is needed to correct
it and a vague time frame .

The sync mechanism was recently overhauled but alas gapless wasn't
added at that point. From what I've read it's considered a pretty big
task but it is something which has been discussed in the past and a
number of people (myself included) would very much like it to be done.

The technical issue used to be that the track breaks were used to
resync players which had drifted during playback, hence they all had to
stop and resync. However the new model resyncs during playback, so I'm
not sure why the gap is still there to be honest.

[slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 extremely slow

2008-03-09 Thread jmsent

Just installed 7.0 on my Mac G4 750 /384 with external WD 500GB firewire
drive. 6.5.4 with this setup worked perfectly. With 7.0,my SB3 now
responds extremely slowly to commands until I can finally select an
album from the playlist menu and hit play. Once that album starts to
play, then the response time returns to normal until the album
finishes. Then the problem starts all over. I've reinstalled the
program, rebooted both the computer and the SB 3, updated the firmware,
rescanned the music library, and made sure that the paths to the music
folders are correct, but to no avail. I've even started playback in
itunes just to make sure that the external hard drive was not in sleep
mode. Still the same problem. This just sucks. I want to go back to
6.5, but I can't figure out how to do that. Help!

Album Cover Art Downloader worked for me in Ubuntu. It took a little bit of

The one thing that I believe nobody has addressed yet is how are you
controlling volume? When doing a side by side versus a CD player, IMO,
the volume on the SD product should be at maximum and the when using
the digital out try the fixed setting. The CD player does not suffer
from resolution loss caused by the volume setting section in the SD
product. Any side by side test needs to account for this, so volume at
Max on the SD product to eliminate any resolution loss.

User interface is not very clean at the moment but here are the steps.
It is effectively cut paste

Make sure you are editing Favorites (i.e clieck pencil icon)

1. Create the folders you want
2. Select the favorites you want moved.
3. Click the x - the Favorites entry will be delete but there will be
a new entry at the bottom Insert Delete [name of favorite]
4. Click on destination folder name
5. You should still see the Insert Delete [name of favorite] entry so
click on it to add to the folder.

Re: [slim] SBC not observing daylight savings time

2008-03-09 Thread ebin

I find that leaving the SBC on, and having screen saver set to none
when charging is the way to go IMHO.

I will turn off the SBC at night, therefore it gets a reboot when you
first turn it on in the morning (my computers go off at night too)

Turning the SBC on and off all the time takes some start up time, while
leaving the remote on during the day it just has to reconnect with
wireless if left for a longer period (I think 1 hr)

I am still learning the qwerks with day to day use but I must say
this is a slick device and I am enjoying it immensly(sp)

I don't have any problems with the devices, unless I hit play all in
the top music menu
and then SC understandable seems to lock up (one hell of a playlist to
create LOL)
Would be nice to be able to arrange menus on SBC

Presently own 2 SB3's and the Duet and am one happy customer,
looking forward to future SC upgrades and features.

Great job and kudos to the Slim Devices team
Keep up the great work

I'm with you on this one. I installed SC7 and all seemed fine - for

processor, 1GB RAM and 40GB iTunes music library on an 80GB C drive.
There is only 3GB free space on the drive if that's significant.

A couple of informal observations:-

I just selected Albums to list from the libray and it took 84 seconds
to load to the Done point where the browser pane responds to a scroll
message. No music playing at the time. It is generally very sluggish -
to the point of being unuseable when music is played.

Going to Classic skin seems to speed things up a bit - album art
seems to take forever to download.

Running Firefox instead of IE7 seems a bit faster.

I had no performance problems with SC6.5.4.

I didn't know about error checking in WMP before I started ripping

Without error checking in WMP I'd get the odd blast of static when

so infrequent that I didn't hear one for quite a few days of spot

With error checking on it went away completely. Discs in real bad

Don't use crap like WMP, use EAC and FLAC to rip your CD's.
People regularly post here complaining that they inadvertently ripped
their collection in WMA + DRM and now it won't play on their SB's.

 Peter

I don't remember asking your opinion. FLAC doesn't work on my Zune,
doesn't work worth a crap in MCE. Why should I use it again? Oh yah,
because Peter said so. Rollseyes

Re: [slim] SBC not observing daylight savings time

2008-03-09 Thread rabbit

I have the opposite problem. Here in Europe DST doesn't start for
another 3 weeks but my Slimserver jumped forward an hour last night.
The time and timezone settings on my NAS (QNAP)show the correct time,
but both SB's are now an hour ahead. Any ideas or do I just leave it as
it will be right again on March 30.

Re: [slim] How to get Artwork?

2008-03-09 Thread GRC

EnochLight;276775 Wrote:
This is simply not true. Any album artwork in iTunes should show up
fine in SqueezeCenter as well as on your Controller - it works fine on
 mine.
 . . .

Are you syncing your iTunes Library XML file with SqueezeCenter or are
you just pointing SqueezeCenter to a folder where all of your iTunes
 music is stored?

1. Simply IS true for SC 6.5.4 and SC7 with SB3 so nah-nah-na-nah-nah
:-)

2. I have specific paths declared to XML file and music folder -
doesn't help.

3. My personal experience is that artwork automatically downloaded by
iTunes (I don't buy iTunes music - just use it to organise
independently ripped / downloaded files) is the problem. If it shows
up in iTunes but not in SC then a simple - albeit longwinded - ruse is
to copy the album art image from the bottom-right pane; select all the
tracks on the album and right-click (sorry Mac users) to select Clear
Downloaded Artwork; then paste the copied image back against all the
tracks. I understand this tags each track with the artwork which SC7
then sees. Do this gradually over a period of time, preferably with
some nice toons playing and a glass of red wine to hand.

Thank you and good night.

Graeme

Re: [slim] Duet Controller artwork quality - no dithering done?

So the takeaway is that we can do better by doing a proper dither on the
device from 888 to 565. Also, the viewing angle matters.

Great! I believe this will take care of the problem. Please use
Floyd-Steinberg dithering (or an equally good method).

BTW, what is the size of the artwork displayed by the SBC?

Is it possible to use a lossless format (e.g. PNG, BMP, or GIF) instead
of JPG for the artwork? If this is possible, I'm going to try converting
the source files to the native size of the SBC and use 5-6-5
Floyd-Steinberg dithering.

Thanks,
Peter

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 extremely slow

2008-03-09 Thread y360

I experienced the same extreme slowness after I upgraded to SC7. The SB3
barely flipped through the menus.
I rebooted the machine on which SC7 was installed and all became fine.
I have no idea why.

Just installed 7.0 on my Mac G4 750 /384 with external WD 500GB firewire

responds extremely slowly to commands until I can finally select an
album from the playlist menu and hit play.
Help!

Just installed a newly purchased SB3 and am having very similar
problem. Connects fine through setup but little or no response through
remote, unless like you I manage to select a track then things speed
up. If however I select a track through squeezecenter menu response is
fast straight away. Have emailed tech support, just paid £180 for
something that's so clunky it's unusable at the mo.

DRM isn't on by default in WMP so why these people turn it on is
besides me. I tried EAC but it was too much work to get the rip done
with album art. I have 3000 CDs to do and don't have the time.

For the benefit of others who might read this, EAC plus FLAC is an
excellent way to get prefect rips that you know you don't have to do
again. WMP is less reliable a ripper, but is fine for 95% of discs.
EAC is good at dealing with scratches, and reports when it has an
accurate rip - although it is slower.

Oh and check out Album Art Aggregator = a great little piece of
software. WMP and iTunes are fine for most album art, but if you
collection is more eclectic, AAA is very quick.
