[slim] Solutions for Squeezebox on the go
Greetings I currently have a Duet with an additional receiver and I love them both. I will be going to the beach for a couple of weeks and would like to bring my music collection along. I plan to bring my Macbook Pro (OS 10.6.3) with my 500GB+ music collection on an external esata hard drive. I also have an Apple HiFi that has 1/8 input that I could use as speakers. I could just play my music from iTunes on my Mac and take the audio out from the Mac into the Apple Hifi and be done with it. I will not have wifi access at this beach house My questions are: 1. Would bringing my Duet make any sense for this setup? I could plug my Mac into the Duet via an ethernet cabe...(I wont have wifi) and plug the Duet into the Apple HiFi. 2. What are some good Portable powered speakers I could buy for this and future situations that are better than the Apple WiFi? I'm also not against buying a Touch and putting it into the mix. :-) Thanks for any suggestions. [slim] Definitive Guide to Volume Adjustment using iTunes
Could anyone please provide a guide to how best adjust for volume differentials between between albums when those albums have all been ripped using iTunes? I have spent hours reading comments on this and other forums but I remain very confused. My configuration is as follows: a) iTunes 9 library stored on a ReadyNAS NVX b) Squeezebox Server 7.5 runs on the ReadyNAS, using iTunes integration, and Album Gain. c) SBS serves a Squeezebox Classic. d) I also run a UPnP server on the ReadyNAS, using the same music library, to serve a PURE Avanti radio/media player. My music collection is a very broad mix, containing everything from classical to hard rock. My first intention was to use iTunes' Sound Check function. However my understanding is that will kill the large dynamic range inherent in much classical music. I have used the Volume Adjustment option of iTunes (via the Get Info Options tab). Whilst this appears to store entries in the iTunes Library file, including the .xml file, it appears not to affect the final volume produced by SBS. However, there appear to be some anomolies here. Consider the following test performed on a track called India from an album Flying Carpet: 1. In iTunes I turned the Volume Adjustment down to -80%. Sure enough the track is barely audible when played via iTunes. 2. An extract from the iTunes .xml file shows: dict keyTrack ID/keyinteger2053/integer keyName/keystringIndia/string keyAlbum/keystringFlying Carpet (Disc 2) Lotus/string keyVolume Adjustment/keyinteger-203/integer 3. After rescanning in SBS the Song Info shows a Volume Adjustment of -13.81dB. Viewing Tags shows an RVAD value of -13.944212. However, the song plays at its original volume via SBS! I have attached two screenshots of the Song Info screens. As you will see there is a mass of strange characters above the RVAD value - not sure where these are coming from. The last attachment shows the tags reported by the mp3TAG utility. +---+ |Filename: India3.JPG | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10044| +---+ -- Tradewind25 Geoff J. Re: [slim] Playlists
I believe on my version of the server multiple genres can be added as either: Rock\\Wife Rock;Wife MP3Tag will create multiple tags in the first instance and a single tag in the second. In the second case you need to make sure that Squeezeserver has ; defined as a separator. I use the second method as that way the whole tag is shown in MP3Tag explorer Window (using the first method only the firts tag is shown in the explorer windowas far as I can see!!) If the player shows up on your mySB account, then the new owner is using whichever Rhapsody account is listed on that mySB account - probably yours. You need to delete the player from your mySB account. Re: [slim] Definitive Guide to Volume Adjustment using iTunes
You want to remove volume adjustment in itunes. This is more of a manual feature. You need soundcheck (itunes way of doing what you want). Soundcheck adds a tag to each itunes song letting itunes know how to adjust the volume of the song to make it sound at an average volume. This allows songs played after each other to be of similar volume limiting the need for volume adjustment from track to track. Soundcheck values are set at a track level. Thus tracks from the same album may be adjusted differently by itunes. If you play the album songs after each other, relative volumes would have changed. So a soft part of your symphony may suddenly become louder compared to the rest (if it is in a different track). If you often listen to whole albums this may be problematic. SB server can then read soundcheck values and use them. However if you use something like foobar2000 to set your replaygain tags in each music file, then it stores an albumgain and track gain value. These tags are what everyone else uses to do what soundcheck does in itunes. SB server will then use album gain (which is set across an album) when playing an album and it will use track gain when playing a mix of tracks from different albums. Thus when playing an album the relative loudness of tracks are kept the same. For SB3 to use replaygain or soundcheck you need to activate it under the audio settings for the player. If both soundcheck and replaygain info is present SB3 will ignore soundcheck. To do what you want I'd download foobar2000 and point it at my library. Then run it to set replaygain at by album tags. This will sort out SB3. To fix itunes you can activate soundcheck and get tags at a track level. There is also a way to take the album replaygain tags and covert them to soundcheck values. This way itunes will use these values and not it's own calculated values. I use foobar to set my replaygain values -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79349 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] New user slightly confused
1. There is a setting on the server: Settings\Advanced\Rescan Music Library. 2. Under settings\player\Basic Setting\ Play other songs in album. The repeating behaviour is controlled by the repeat button funnily enough :) If you press play on the album name before reaching tracks it will also play the whole album. 3. In the web interface you can't control the size of artwork. Try different skins and see if this helps you: Settings\Interface\Webinterface 4. Edit the info in mediamonkey. And save it to tags. Otherwise use mp3tag or similar software. Logitech Z-2300 powered speakers have excellent 2.1 sound with plenty of bass, and they only run about $120 or so. For a beach house vacation they should be perfectly acceptable. Re: [slim] Definitive Guide to Volume Adjustment using iTunes
I have soundcheck enabled in iTunes which is applied after ripping music. However, I also use iVolume which is a separate application that updates the iTunes soundcheck tag using the replaygain routines. Ivolume also has the ability to do album based adjustments like you want as well as an overall adjustment to volume that you can set manually. Finally, I have sbs set to smart gain if I remember correctly. It seems surprising that this thread has not been posted to since January. Are the tweaks in here still valid? the tweaks are for MySQL users. SBS seems to be going to a SQLite by default setup, and so you can't do the tweaks with that. [slim] Transporter / best digital input
Hello guys, I plug my computer to the Transporter by using the Optical input, and I am not 100% satisfied by the result. If I compare the sound I get with the squeeze center through WIFI, the sound from the optical input is less powerful, lower quality and there is bit of background noise (not much though). I wondered if the other inputs would provide a better quality (listed below, pasted from the pdf guide). Can you help? Re: [slim] Transporter / best digital input
I use the coax s/pdif output from my computer to connect to the digital input on the Transporter if I want to play computer sounds via the Transporter. (In my case I only do this to play Wolfgang's Vault live music because I can't play this directly via squeezebox). I've tried both the toslink (optical) and s/pdif (coax) and both sound identical to me with no background noise, etc. (volume of the digital input is a little lower than playing squeezebox source material, but quality is good. I'm accessing the 192kbs stream from wolfgang's. Not fantastic, but OK). Out of curiosity, what are you playing on the computer that you want to send to the transporter digital input. I find very few things (one in my case) that this approach is needed for. Most things can work via the SqueezeboxServer itself with no need for digital out from computer digital in on the transporter. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79363 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I had a few issues with compilations, but I just went back and did those separately after the fact. You might want to add the component facets to make it easier to navigate around foobar. I would select one or two albums first for you to get a feel of how it works. You have to select the option gary says to get album gain values right. Once you've done this, you'd need to rescan. SB would read these values and ignore itunes values. This would solve your SB volume issues. If you've used mp3tag you can use it to convert your replaygain values into soundcheck values. You make it use the albumgain value. Itunes would then use these soundcheck values which would sort out your problem in itunes. If itunes could have just used and honoured the replaygain tags everyone else is using life would have been a lot simpler... -- lrossouw Louis 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/lrossouw) lrossouw's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79349 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
