Re: [slim] Analog output on SB3 no longer seems to work - suggestions?

2022-04-12 Thread Chris Laplante
Many of these went out, they were mostly the electrolytic capacitors in the
analog stage. There used to be a guide about it since it was a common
problem.

You can test if you have anything digital you can plug it into.

[slim] Hard drive died / proof of a higher power

2015-10-22 Thread Chris Laplante
I could not make this up if I tried...

I have a drive that is failing. I put it in an external enclosure to try to
work out what can be recovered from it.

Running a directory listing it got as far as:

./20070715/Pink Martini and then quit...

Longtime followers will see the extreme irony in that.

Maybe my homesick squeezeboxes have been playing it all along at night
wearing a special groove right there in my drive.

Re: [slim] Sirius Dead on the Logitech Devices

2015-09-11 Thread Chris Laplante
One very round-about way is to plug said device into the line-in on your
server or run the app on your server. You can then use any number of
methods (I use Nicecast / AudioHijack on a mac myself) to get the audio.
You then have a local stream in a standard format you can point the
squeezebox at. I do this to listen to my scanner among other things.

For sure a far second to direct support, but it will work for anything.

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-07-16 Thread Chris Laplante
One really simple IR/Remote solution is triggerhappy:

https://github.com/wertarbyte/triggerhappy

I am using this on a raspberry PI, but I suspect it should be
applicable on the wandboard as well.

I have it going with an old keyspan IR remote module. It listens for
keys, creates an event, and I cooked up a config file to in turn use
CURL to call the Squeezebox web server to control squeezelite. It also
would work with a keyboard.

Re: [slim] Possible to revive bricked Squeezebox classic?

2013-05-24 Thread Chris Laplante
Your biggest hope is that it is the wireless card holding it down. It's a
very (if not the most) common failure for the wireless card to either just
need a reseating or have failed keeping it from booting further. A common
tell-tale of that is that they don't do anything but their toslink ports
are lit up. In this state one can dismantle it, remove the wireless card
and either replace it or used it wired. This is the exact same way the
wired only SB3's were sold from the factory. Other common failures are the
external power supply and some caps failing inside that are well
documented. If it is none of those things and a full Xilinx reset does not
do it, you probably really have something difficult to fix.

Thanks,

-Chris

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Alternative from the old Crew

I found the knob interesting. It encompasses two common themes from this
forum from years ago. "It's gotta have a knob!" that lead to the knob on

I can't quite make out what is going on in the first drawing. It looks like
time out for music or something.

At any rate it sure looks like they are trying something unique.

Re: [slim] outdoor speaker recommendations?

Big thumbs up for the *Polk Audio Atrium 45 All-Weather Speakers. *

We have them out by the hot tub. I think they sound great, and we have had
several guests randomly compliment them. They should be in the price range
you are thinking. I happened to get mine with "ThankYou" points from
Citibank. They've been outdoors only covered by tree canopy all winter and
still look fine weather wise.

I have mine hooked to an old car amp and a ridiculously over sized linear
power supply.

Alternatively thumbs down for the comparatively priced Cambridge Soundworks
ones. I have three other sets of various Cambridge speaker sets that I am
happy with, but the outdoor ones (that I have in a second location) fall
flat (mainly poor bass response).

Good luck, post your results, thinking of replacing the CS ones.

[slim] Kudos on the IR remote design - works under water

2010-03-01 Thread Chris Laplante
I've had an SB3 sealed up in a waterproof box next to my hot tub for a bit
over a year and a half. I was not sure what to do with the remote, when I
think MeSue posted about having had the IR remote in a ziplock by her pool
all summer. I decided to try that with some *dessicate packs* , and it
worked fine ... until this past weekend.

I picked up my baggy and the poor remote was floating in the bag, ziplock
failure! Normally I would take the batteries out as quickly as possible and
try to dry out electronics, but I figured the damage was done. I hit a
button, and it worked no problem as the water poored out the battery hatch.

Good job to whomever designed that one! This is the "second generation"
non-backlit IR remote.

I think I'll put it in a new bag and/or consider shelling out for a proper
waterproof dolphin remote.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-12-15 Thread Chris Laplante
Thanks for the work you do on this ralphy!

This little side project is slowly becoming the most viable software player
as squeezeplay and softsqueeze seemingly fall into abandonment. I somehow
doubt the expected "news/changes" around the first of the year will signal
their improved support either.

Re: [slim] Duet: firmware 55? Controller hardware update?

2008-09-23 Thread Chris Laplante
The missing perl module errors were known/common. They got it all
figured out in later releases. I was getting the same thing in some
releases, and then that went away in later releases w/o me changing my
server.

I believe you do need 7.x for the controller.

What amp are you using?

Re: [slim] SquuezeBox Classic Remote Control

2008-09-19 Thread Chris Laplante
I've also never had any luck with activities... I think the concept
would work if the real remote had single buttons for things, but when
it has say an "HDMI" button, that you use to cycle thru the 4 HDMI
ports on my TV it is constantly getting it wrong, or turning off the
TV or some nonsense. My original remote has no HDMI 1 button, so there
is no way activities would ever know what input the TV is on.

I got around the needing to be in the right context (say TV or Cable
box) to use the right volume etc, but using the IR learn function. I
taught it the the volume IR code for my cable box by using the TV's
original remote. That way no mater what context I am in the volume
controls the TV. I know their is supposed to be some other way, but I
gave up and did it the hard way after hours of futzing.

You can change what page things are on in the LCD, you can push them
up and down as needed so the important things are on the first page.

Re: [slim] VFD for Squeezecenter!?

2008-09-12 Thread Chris Laplante
In talking to a hardware engineer at the BBQ yesterday, he mentioned
that the current crop of products with VFDs will likely be the last
they sell. New stuff will be LCD based. I expressed that was too bad,
since the VFDs are quite functional and easy to read from across the
room even if they are not all fancy and modern like.

That would seem to make such a VFD product pretty unlikely.

[slim] Food for wireless thought

2008-08-07 Thread Chris Laplante
Every day I see posts about people saying the wireless on X logislim
device is unreliable or broken... I recently moved, and took all of my
wireless/computer/phone gear and setup the exact same stuff in a new
house. It all worked flawlessly in the old house. In the new house
it's really spotty. When the wireless phone rings, the microwave turns
on, or I look at it wrong... It cuts out.

Same gear, different placement and building materials, very different
results. If I had bought this gear at my current home, I may too be
ranting that it must be shoddy QA. It makes it really apparent to me
that engineering wireless gear, esp on unlicensed frequencies for an
unknown environment is tricky business indeed.

I always wonder what bedrooms modern product designers live in. I
personally have to ritually go around and toss t-shirts over the

Does the charger for my phone REALLY need a hideously bright blue LED?

That policy can also be inforced at the other side, and told to ignore the

Yes.

2) If yes, could anyone recommend a good light distro?

OSX ?

If you take some time, OSX actually strips down pretty good. I have a
dedicated PPC mini that runs MythTV, I have replaced the finder with myth,
so about the only sign of it even being a mac is the bootup logo. I use this
as a video server for my DVD ISO's, it works well in that capacity.

mythtv.org is actually a good source of info on running a stripped down
mini. They have howto's on running a small Linux install on it, as well as
booting Linux over the network on it.

Re: [slim] Need assistance with crash during library scan

2007-07-19 Thread Chris Laplante

Have you tried scanning a directory that contains the entire directory with
that file, as well as the folders that come before and after it?

This would eliminate some scenarios where something is getting opened and
not closed correctly (say a stray apostrophe or other illegal character;
which I am sure should be getting escaped properly)

That would seem like a step closer to a real world test.

Alright I present a problem which to me, in my limited programming /
database experience, makes very little sense. I've been attempting to
get SlimServer to scan my library in entirety, but each time ti does so
it crashes at exactly the same spot on a certain file. I brought this up
directly with Logitech support, but they were unable to replicate the
problem. Indeed, if I scan ONLY that folder my SlimServer is capable of
reading and recognizing it. However, when I have it search and catalog
the entirety of my library, it crashes upon reaching this particular
folder. After many various and assorted "tests" generated by Logitech
Customer Support I finally just got frustrated, decided I had other
more important things to do besides spend hours working on that, and
went off to do other things. Thus the Logitech Customer Support ticket
has expired. Tonight I decided to mess around with it yet again and the
same problem is persisting, but I found an interesting quirk. If I make
a playlist which is the entirety of my library and tell SlimServer to
scan ONLY my playlists (which, incidentally, the only playlist
available is the one I created which has the entire library in it)
SlimServer manages to scan my entire library and generate a listing
based off of what is in the playlist.

So I'm sure you're probably scratching your head at this point, because
yes, it makes no sense. Obviously there isn't a MySQL conflict if it's
able to generate the library, the issue just seems to be when
scanner.exe attempts to scan the library without a playlist in
reference. I can, of course, simply update that playlist each time I
add a new album, but I'd rather get to the root of the problem and fix
it there.

Note: This has also been sent to support at slimdevices dot com. Just
figured I'd let more minds have a whack at it.

Re: [slim] Announce: DirectPlaybookPDF - turn your music collection into a book

2007-05-15 Thread Chris Laplante

Yay! It's heartwarming to know someone appreciates the work I put in. I had
thought about your idea for the codes, and yes frankly the internal ID is
prone to change on rescan. My general process has been that I tend to update
in bulk, so I print a new book. It is clearly less than ideal, and I have
thought about a server side mod to make the IDs static. If someone else is
interested in using the scripts, it would possibly provide me some drive to
dig into that deeper.

I would think an ISBN number would also be a good way to go. A tie in with
Amazon's S3 service may be a good way to get that data en masse. I think if
anything, I would likely support them both, as what I have works for me. We
would need some way of ultimately translating the CD's barcode to a
slimserver album id + artist id, or write a server plugin that allows to
call via an ISBN number stored in the DB. With slim's db schema this would
be harder than it sounds.

I have printed my books with this:
http://www.staplescopycenter.com
(the company I work for has an interest in people using this; but really I
honestly just think it is a great service as a customer.)

It has worked out really well, I upload a PDF and pickup a 1500 page three
hole drilled printout in a couple of hours. I don't think I could print it
myself in any cheaper/easier way. RFID tags would be another (perhaps
greener) way to go if I could find a cheap source for them.

If you download the software, the README file has some recommendations and
pointers on scanners. Bluetooth scanners do seem hideously expensive, and
finding a cheap/working scanner on ebay seems to be nearly impossible. I am
very happy with the one I have. One idea I had that I have not done is to
make a barcode widget with a scanner + gumstix (http://gumstix.com/). The
bit that translates from barcodes to slimserver CLI commands would run on
the gumstix, and could send slimserver commands via wifi.

I will say cuecats are utter crap, don't consider one for more than
rudimentary proof of concept. If you are in the SF area I'd be glad to give
you mine to be rid of them.

If you get a scanner and get things setup, I would be glad to do some custom
work. I mainly got it to a point where it worked well for me, and QA'd some
with another forum user, I have not worked on it much more b/c it does what
I need, was not going to write features for no-one to use :)

-Chris

On 5/15/07, smst <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I was thinking about a barcode-reading feature some time ago (mentioned
it 'in this forum thread'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20138)), and today I
remembered it. And I see that an implementation exists! Excellent. I
particularly like the use of a few special barcodes to control modes and
other functions. Thanks for putting the work in; it looks very cool.

I've still not printed a catalogue of my collection (the expense of the
trading card storage and a new printer doesn't fit well with the
relatively low priority of the printout!) but wanted to make a
suggestion anyway, in case it's useful for others. It concerns the ID
used to identify a given album: where does it come from? Is it a
SlimServer db internal ID? Is it prone to change on a rescan?

I propose this: have the basic play-this-album barcode be exactly the
barcode printed on the original CD's packaging. For those albums which
don't have that metadata stored, use a number based on the db ID (or
whatever is used currently) but adjusted to be in a range illegal for
the CD barcode. (I'm pretty sure there are rules and checksums for
those barcodes... least elegantly, they're not longer than 14 digits so
an adjusted ID above 1,000 million million would be sure not to clash!)

Personally, I have a PRODUCTNUMBER tag on every file (where the CD had
a barcode!) containing the relevant digits. I imagine that one could
extend the SlimServer db to include a custom album ID based on a
user-defined tag, or generated automatically in the absence of such a
tag. (I don't know if that's easy to do or not; it's just an idea
meant to trigger discussion.)

The obvious upshot of this is that the barcode scanner will now work in
the absence of a printed catalogue: I just scan the barcode on the disc,
which is on the shelf next to me (as I still find a use for all those
bits of plastic; haven't got SBs everywhere yet!).

Everything else ("Play all by this artist", changing mode, random mix,
etc) can be triggered by IDs outside of the album ID range. "Play all
by this artist" could be implemented automatically, without recourse to
another ID: if the scanned number is in some special range outside of
the album range, chop off all but the last 14 digits to identify the
album then dereference it to the artist. One could imagine other such
special ranges (eg 3x10^15, or '3' plus a 14 digit album ID, could mean
"take me to the album so I can pick a track").

Since I don't have a barcode scanner yet, and may be the only person

Re: [slim] How would you like to select which music to play ?

2007-03-01 Thread Chris Laplante
We would like to see "flickr" / "del.icio.us" style tags for music.
One can pretty much accomplish this with the custom browse plugin, but
the ability to easily input the data in the first place is missing. I
would like an extension so I could say tag a song/ablum with an
arbitrary tag ("fun", "happy", "sad", "funky", "purple") and
immediately have that be something I could key on in custom browse and
build playlists with. We would want to be able to make up new tags on
a whim upon entering them.

This should be able to be done from a drill down type manor, as well
as an on the fly addition to the currently playing song/album.

I am somewhat mixed if I think this data should be a DB only function,
or if it should mod the tags. I would be happy if it were DB only,
aside from the fact that having to do a wipe/rebuild is a pretty
common occurrence when you upgrade.

Thanks! I have found your tools useful.

Re: [slim] CLI playlist play question

2007-01-13 Thread Chris Laplante

I noted that the webUI uses a loadTracks param which I tried over the
CLI interface.. it works, but the results are completely nuts (which is
perhaps why it is not documented).. question - is there a way to play a
song via track_id rather than the path? This would be so much nicer if
one is using the server database to get albums and tracks and their
associated ids..

MAC playlistcontrol cmd:load artist_id:ARTISTSID album_id:ALBUMID

You would do the same thing substituting track_id for album_id.

Checkout this thread, I ended up doing many of the things you are
asking about in my project, so it may be a good source of examples and

[slim] Announce: DirectPlaybookPDF - turn your music collection into a book

2006-11-11 Thread Chris Laplante

Similar to DirectPlayBook but outputs your music catalog in PDF
document format one page per album, including cover art, album title,
track listings, and an index at the end. It also creates a barcode on
each page for that album and everything by that artist. A second
script interfaces a barcode scanner to slimserver.

The end result is the ability to create a physical catalog of one's
music, that you can flip thru, pick an album, scan the album or artist
barcode and have that play on a squeezebox. This allows for all the
advantages of slimserver, while retaining the tactile experience of
browsing your albums. It could also be used without the barcodes just
to create a catalog of your music.

Current known issues:

- The script runs on Linux/MacOSX only. It would not take much to make
it work on windows, patches are welcome or I would be glad to work
with a windows user. Someone familiar with perl would be preferred.
- Various Artists compilations showing up multiple times under each
artist instead of "Various Artists". Ideas on a better SQL query are
welcome.

Re: [slim] Can slimserver generate a "report"?

2006-08-10 Thread Chris Laplante

I have a project that I have been cooking away at, that I intend to
release when I am happy with it. It will query the DB (if you are
using mysql / I have not tested it with the stock DB) and create a
page in a PDF document with the cover art, a barcode of the album id,
a barcode of the artist id, artist, title, and a track listing one
page per album. It will also create an index of artists and albums at
the end.

It "works for me TM" but will honestly take some doing to get it
setup, I don't have it cleanly polished and packaged. I have only
tested it on Fedora core 4 Linux, but it should work on most Linux
variants. Some porting would be required to make it work under
cygwin/windows.

Let me know if that's something you would be interested in trying and
I will send you a copy to be a guinea pig.

Re: [slim] any recommendation for Hard Drive Enclosure

I have 5 of the Venus DS3 FIrewire/USB enclosures and have been happy

On the flip side, I advise highly against anything from "Metal Gear"

What flimsy crap. The construction is shoddy, and the one I had, a

Re: [slim] Re: Radioshack receiver/amp

2006-05-15 Thread Chris Laplante
Most of these low cost amps are all based on the exact same chip, since
it's an amazing little beast it has almost no external components. Its
the chip, one cap and a couple of resistors if I recall so there is not
likely any difference from one to the next except appearance and
connections / knobs.
Searching for Tripath  / Class T / Class D amps will net a wealth of info about them.

Tripath also puts out a kit, which provides an amp that is besting audiophile amps in many blind tests for more of a kit price.

Same user, identical post (although with a slight variation in the
title).

I have no idea what the goals of it is, it's not advertising anything
or pointing to a dangerous site.

Re: [slim] Re: Dedicated skin for Dell Axim x51v

2006-05-03 Thread Chris Laplante

That looks great. I'd love to see the AJAX bit in one of the normal
skins (I use dark myself) as well. The constant page reload is really
heavy on the server and client CPU wise, and does nasty things like
keep my mac laptop awake unless I close firefox.

Thanks,

Re: [slim] Softsqueeze control via IR?

2006-05-01 Thread Chris Laplante

Can you get your IR setup to input X IR code and output Y keyboard
press? SoftSqueeze already has a full host of keyboard shortcuts, the
easiest thing to do is send those.

This is what I do with my setup though not using a slim remote.

I've used XMMS on my HTPC Linux box for quite a while now. I'm able to
control it via IR through an IRman serial device. I've even got my
Philips Pronto remote configured for it. It's nice being able to start
playing music in my media room from a single remote without needing a
separate SB.

I also like that I can synchronize (theoretically) my SB2 in the
bedroom with Softsqueeze in my media room. The biggest piece of
functionality missing is the IR control of Softsqueeze. I don't
necessarily like having to use the keyboard/mouse to control my music
playback on the computer. Many times I don't even have the display
turned on. I just want to listen to music.

Any chance something like this could be added? Perhaps the ability to
control Softsqueeze through an IRman device using the standard SB
remote? Anyone else feel this would be handy?

[slim] XSync on 6.2.x ?

2006-04-29 Thread Chris Laplante

Anyone have any idea why XSync seems to not work on 6.2.2? It behaves
like a normal sync (press right to sync/unsync from player X) rather
than offering a menu item to "Sync all players to this master".

Thanks,

Re: [slim] Re: more wood cases

2006-04-11 Thread Chris Laplante
Nope. I'd say it is just timing, it won't take the key thruout the
entire POST process so just hit the key (I think it did end up being
F2) repeatedly after waiting a couple of seconds. The first thing I
did was turn off the splash screen upon getting in so I could see when
to press. Someone else on this thread had the same problem.

Also It can be picky about the angle of the keyboard. Any other
keyboard I believe is a non option, as it won't init the USB interface
in time for BIOS. I think it may have the pins for a PS/2 port, but
they are not brought out to a connector.

Yeah that's a change, mine have the same sticker except they say "Do
not operate without the heatsink" and has no mounting holes. I'd
question the wisdom of mounting a laptop drive (those things crank out
some heat) on what the original engineers intended to be a heatsink. I
suspect this may be an EarthLCD level change.

Hmm, mine didn't have any HD bracket that I am aware of. The only
thing I would describe as a "bracket" is the heat sink, which just
comes off by removing the retaining nuts. When that comes off I can
directly see the DOM, which is just held in place with one screw. That
just un-seats.

I think the could rule of thumb is to think, what would I run on a
Pentium 1 / 266? That's essentially what the CPU behaves like. I think
it can certainly run all those apps, but not with a fat window
manager.

DSL Is the only one I've tried on it, the few times I ran even a full
Knoppix boot into KDE were painfully slow.

Use the 44 pin header, much easier unless you need two drives.

Yes, that is a 44 pin header. They should have included cables for a
laptop drive as well as an adapter for a normal from (word to the
wise, they have some QA problems with that adapter and the cables
seating correctly; personally I hold them in place with a home depot
orange clip thing when I need to use it b/c you have to press with a
good deal of force to get the cable to stay in). I boot off of a 512M
CF myself.

Not sure which socket you are talking about, not the built on CF slot?

Not I. The only other lead I have been able to dig out, is I think the
original source of these was a failed IBM Internet Appliance. I seems
to share some things in common with the ThinStation, they may both
come from the same reference design. Oddly enough try searching under
the part number for the power brick it came with. I dug up some
additional info with that.

One of mine has a 128, I think it's a toshiba. Be carefull as to the
physical size of the SODIMM, they are not all alike, and I have others
that are too tall.

Fedora would run like a wet blanket on it. I playback 320 just fine
running X and slimp3slave or squeezeslave w/ SoftSqueeze running on my
server doing X display back. You really need a lean/mean distro, and a
very basic X server / wm.

Re: [slim] Media Center version of Softsqueeze?

2006-04-05 Thread Chris Laplante
Could you use the keyboard shortcuts somehow?

Another option would be slight of hand, there are command line methods
to "press" any button on any client. So really any means that would
take input from a remote or other control device, and send on a TCP
request to the server could control it.
