Re: [slim] How to export all my music as a text file?

2011-07-20 Thread DigitalMitch

I use Album Catalog Creator.

thread:- http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74452
website:- http://acc.vanholt.nl/

It is more structured than a flat text file but provides a 'pretty'
output.
It takes a while (but less than an hour) to run on my 30,000 tracks.
I then print as a .pdf (using CutePdf) and keep that on my phone as a
reference (to stop buying duplicates of back catalogue stuff)

I made Frank a donation as he was very responsive to a small bug I
found.

Re: [slim] Why can't I play every song from 1984...

2010-07-19 Thread DigitalMitch

Jim,

Maybe off-topic but ..

Since the new schema is not going to happen then shouldn't all
'deferred' bugs be revisited and if suitable, made live for fixing.

'Suitable' is arguable, and probably should be 'set' by Logitech.
Clearly we can't expect the new schema by 'stealth' so difficult
problems and significnat new features would not be suitable.

However, getting some of the smaller bugs reopened and fixed should be
acheivable ??

The 'Year' issue wouldn't be top of the list, and may not even make the
cut. (I can use CustomBrowse at home, so it's only a problem when using
tinySC at GF's).

Adding a page to edit needed category, is just a matter of inserting
[[Category:Edit Needed]] in the page and after that it will show up
 here:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Category:Edit_Needed

It might also be useful to add some kind of information regarding
what's incorrect, for example like I did earlier on this page:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/PluginSettings

This has been on my 'learn how to' list for a while, so I'll give it a
go.

I think that there a couple of fundamental issues (aside from the
parallel forums):-

1) there are parallel FAQ's at
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/439/5745?selectedcrid=439selectedcid=5745WT.z_sp=Productosid=bit=
which presents a maintenance and search overhead
2) these forums act as substitute support and save lazy/unaware people
from searching by letting them post questions and get answers (a good
service for them and provided by free from the many dedicated
enthusiasts, but think what more those enthusiasts coudl acheieve if
not answering repeat questions).
3) many 'fixes' are frequently reposted, or threads are used as answers
which undermines any wiki
4) my personal experience is that searching the forums is more likely
to get relevant information than the wiki. I am not sure if this is the
search enginer, the tagging or simply the volume of material available.

Perhaps critical mass on the wiki (or FAQ?) is necessary to get over
the perception hump (or actually these fix a huge number of problems
that are therefore invisible).

Re: [slim] Why can't I play every song from 1984...

2010-05-18 Thread DigitalMitch

we can only vote to express our desire.

checked CustomBrowse, now I'm home, and it works fine for years (and
decades) which confirms (for me at least) that my tags are correct.
This also confirms that track year is held in the database, distinct
from album year (which I use more often as part of sort albums by
artist then year).

that strikes me that fixing year should therefore be quite easy (but
I'm no programmer).

Re: [slim] Why can't I play every song from 1984...

2010-05-17 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm not at home to confirm, so I'm doing this from recall.

I went through the exercise of tagging individual tracks in
compilations with the correct year, using MP3Tag on FLAC files, and
still couldn't get correct 'by year' behaviour. I think (but it was
several months ago) that the SBS treated all of an album as being by
one (the earliest?) date.

The solution I found was then to use the CustomeBrowse plug-in which
did give the correct behaviour.

InTheBath, suggest you check tags using something like MP3Tag and if
they are okay and behaviour still doesn't suit you, then try
CustomBrowse.

Pippin,

thanks for reply - main switching problem is controller.
unfortnuately the wifi on my iPhone has died so I am without iPeng -
which has always been the only sensible inetrface for multiple
servers/players and sync.
pondering whether I could use 3G and get back into my network that way?
but only a month til phone conract up and chance to upgrade.

STS is shorthand for Squeezebox Touch Server - I thought I picked that
up from somewhere, but can't find where. I think it is convenient to
distinguish from a full SBS and makes more sense than TinySC.

Back to OP - I agree with othr comments 7.5 and Touch as player has
been a very clean release. I seem to be having problems with Touch as a
server but not seeing many others with same issue. I didn't think Touch
as a player would be as good as an SB3 for cross-room visibility, now
I've got one I think the colour screen on Touch is better with albumart
plus the touch and Squeezeplay interface.

You want names to make sense ??? :-)

not necessarily ;-) just some consistency would be nice - I keep an eye
on Beta so I'm comfortable with TinySC, but that's in no documentation
that a noob would see. I've fallen into the trap of using something
else that equally isn't understood by all (and sorry can't find where I

and use it from far away.

I think I was expecting worse distance performance and therefore Touch
has exceeded my expectation. I am frequently sat close enough to my two
SB3's for the 10 foot font not to be an issue and for long distance
would use SBC or iPeng. Therefore the touch interface is an added
feature to an SB3. I accept that the 10 foot font may be an issue for
some.

Re: [slim] How Do You Control Your Squeezebox(es)?

2010-04-09 Thread DigitalMitch

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77022

Question: How Do You Control Your Music/Squeezebox?

- SBC (Squeezebox Controller)
- IR Remote Control
- Web UI
- Touch
- Other - Explain

Mixed

IR:30%
Radio front panel:20%
Controller:30%
iPeng:20% (before Iphone wifi died, AAARGH!)

I'm comfortable to grab the nearest and most available.

I find IR fine for radio and selecting from New Music or if I have a
particular album in mind.

For general browsing and on the fly playlists, I find controller or
iPeng better. I have an extra dock next to pc for SBC and if it's there
(SBC still downstairs this morning) then I'd use SBC.

iPeng is great, once it is loaded, and if not using phone for anything
else.

The options confuse some people, e.g. GF, but I think the flexibility
is a significant benefit of the system.

Personally I think the IR should behave exactly the same, no matter
what it is pointed at, the different behaviour of Press right/centre
between older and Squeezeplay is annoying (e.g. playlist wiping due to
the '+ is more' change).

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v2

2010-01-14 Thread DigitalMitch

Frank,

thanks for a great utility, upgarded this morning from 1.5ish which I
hadn't got fully working and successfully emailed the QuickRef to my
phone.

Few hours later, that prevented me buying a copy of an album I already
had, so I'm donating you the cost of that album.

Interestingly, in past posts you didn't intend to support
AlbumArtistSort, since it is an 'unofficial' tag, but is supported by
SBS.
This seems to work at the moment for me:-

Album = West Side Stoy
Compilation = 1
AlbumArtist = Leonard Bernstein
AlbumArtistSort =  OST

sorts as OST in the midst of all my other soundtracks where
AlbumArtist = Various - OST and AlbumArtistSort - OST. I
suspect that this is because SBS has translated AlbumArtistSort into an
internal field that you are using.

Anyway, happy it works.

Re: [slim] 7.4.1 rebuffering woes

2009-12-11 Thread DigitalMitch

Zoltan,

WHS was apparently optimised for 0.5G, but HP added some stuff.
I then added SBS and MusicIP hence need for upgrade. Didn't want to
repeat the exercise so went straight to max).

I'm sure that Linux based solutions would be better, but at the time,
the HP medismart seemed good for me, being ready built and Windows,
which I was comfortable with.

The Touch is driving SBS light, but no hints whether that code would
be available for other platforms (since it would conflict with Touch
hardware sales).

If I was choosing a new solution now, (or when I need to) I'd still be
looking for something beyond Touch for the extra server functionality
and some backup for the music files, as well as power and size.
(recognising HP itself is limited backup).

Re: [slim] 7.4.1 rebuffering woes

2009-12-09 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm not familiar with Airport but you amy wish to compare to the
following

https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14570

Nor am I familar with Mac OS and boxes.

The timing of the problem suggests

1) the new OS plus upgraded SBS has stretched mac too far
2) the new software has an issue
3) something else has happened simultaneously (typically nighbours
impacting wifi).

The process for nailing 2) is the same as 3) which is, unfortunately
tedious, systematic trouble shooting by changing one component at a
time.

typical tests (which aren't necessarily easy).

a) temporarily wire network to check wireless
b) drop back to old SBS on new OS
c) run server temporarily on a faster/bigger computer
d) watch meticuluously for parallel events (microwaves, background
processes)

the fact that OP is hanging is a more unusual fault than intermittant
rebuffering, if it is consistent then I'd call support. Sorry I can't
giv anything better.

P.S. how many/which players which control mechanism?

Re: [slim] 7.4.1 rebuffering woes

2009-12-07 Thread DigitalMitch

there are many threads on this and some details of your set-up would
help the community provide some specific suggestions.

Rebuffering of radio may be down to your ISP.

For local files I've seen rebuffering caused by:-
unstable router firmware (Belkin N1 Vision)
general wifi issues (moved to homeplug, ethernet over power)
server performance (upgarded memory in HP Mediasnart to 2G)

specifically for local FLAC, rebuffering did not occur until 7.4 (i
think) instead the above probably caused a slight stutter and loss of
sync. The error handling got improved and this exposed my underlying
problems.

this does not rule out something in the newer release of software as
well, but no-one has really nailed that and several that have tried have
come up with similar issues to mine.

Re: [slim] clearing current playlist

2009-10-13 Thread DigitalMitch

My problem is that it is all too easy (especially in 7.4) to
accidentally replace a crafted playlist by press of play (or centre
button).

So, if you're creating a new playlist, juts play the first track
(immediately replacing current playlist) and add from there.

If you want silence, press pause or switch the player off.

I agree it's not obvious, I did spend a while wondering why no stop
button - but in practise it is unnecessary.

Re: [slim] Why sqeezebox

2009-10-12 Thread DigitalMitch

iPhone's advice is sound. I didn't think for the future but I'm really
glad I happened on Squeezebox.

My requirements have changed and Squeezebox keeps meeting them

start: replace iPod plugged into stereo, with remote control and
visibility of now playing
then: multi-room synchronous playing
then: CD quality streaming
then: scrolling and selecting by albumart
next: different music in different rooms

Alongside this, other systems do the same things but do they acheive
the same quality? areas to consider are:-

file range: range of codecs supported
audio path: choice of DSP/DAC and amplifier/speakers (if fitted)
longevity: strength of brand and commitment and abilitt to add in x

Interestingly your links show a NAS and a streaming system - there is
no suggestion that the NAS could run the streaming software. Logitech
through the acquisition fo SlimDevices have years of experience in this
field supported by a large, active and vocal community. There are many
new entrants into this space, only time will tell how many the market
can support and how many will endure.

Research and then go for it - streaming has massively improved my
access to enjoyment of my collection.

Re: [slim] Sync

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

I run 2*SB3, 2*SBR, 1*Boom and 1* Radio all sync'd and controlled via
and SBC and/or iPeng.

They are generally all sync'd together and stay perfectly locked.

Very occasionally I have had 1 or 2 drift by 1/2 - 5 seconds. This has
normally occurred after a rebuffering problem and is fixed by power
cycling the offedning unit(s). This hasn't happened since I moved most
to wired (via HomePlug) and subsequently to 7.4.

I power them up and down and add them in and out of sync groups
flawlessly.

SBS is 7.4 on WHS (HP MediaSmart)

Re: [slim] Facebook App Questions

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

Thanks - Update

1. there is a toggle under Settings/Screen/Image Viewer Settings called
'Addiitonal Info about Picture'

When set as 'Show' this includes text (from eitehr FaceBook or
Flickr).
The text does't scroll and is very small but it is there.

2 3

On MySB
deleted credentials
uninstalled Facebook App

Screen saver options remain on SBC Radio
Power cycled each (indepedently) and Screen Saver Options disappear.

This fixes item 3 from my OP.

Resinstalled FB on MySB and reregistered to FB.
the MYSB settings for the rogue SB3 still show the same account
number!!
The account on that SB3 shows correctly.

Item 2 still open (doesn't seem to cause any issues - just looks
wrong).

Re: [slim] Facebook App Questions

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

matt,

tried again. This time using IR to remove account on 'rogue' SB3.
On SB3 MyApps/Facebook gives only 1 option I have a facebook
account.
On MySB the account settings show Already a Facebook Subscriber and
the Connect with Facebook button. The player settings tab shows -
for all the accounts, except the rogue SB3 which still shows
1612336715.

You can't remove FB app from SB3 (or I couldn't find how) so put rogue
SB3 to stand-by, went to MySB and uninstalled, stopped SBS.
Brought SB3 out of standby (incidentally, it failed to find SBS,
obviously but I had to back part way through setup to choose MySB).

Installed FB via SB3, checked on MySB and rogue account still shows
1612336715. Couldn't face entering email via the IT so entered FB
credentials via MySB and back to square 1.

Do you, or anyone else, have any more ideas?

I guess that the Apps liaise direct with MySB whether or not SBS is
running therefore there isn't muc point in exploring that avenue.

Re: [slim] Spare remotes in the UK

2009-10-09 Thread DigitalMitch

there was a spares section on www.logitech.com which seems to have
disappeared/diminished when it was revamped (circa release of Radio)

I had an open cart which had a controller charging cradle, to which I
added a Radio and have now received both. The new web-site didn't seem
to let me complete the order using IE7, so I tried IE8 on a different
machine, couldn't find cradle so upgraded original pc. to IE8 and
completed order (painfully).

I guess if/when they fix web-site you'll hopefully be able to order
spares again.

Alternately harass support and see if they can order for you, bypassing
website.

Alternately the web-settings suggest a JVC remote of unspecified style
may work.

[slim] Facebook App Questions

2009-10-08 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm not sure what to expect of the Facebook app, but have 3 queries

1) I set the screen saver (on both SBC and Radio) to the Facebook News
Feed.
By using Settings\Screen\Screensavers\When Playing\My Facebook
Newsfeed.

When the screensaver kicks in, it cycles through the 'profile' pictures
of friends who have recently posted new (or status updates) but with no
text. I had expected it to give the actual news updates in text
(overlaid or below profile picture), is this correct behaviour - is it
what everyone sees?

2) the My Players tab of the Facebook page of MSB lists my name for all
players except one SB3 where it shows the account as 1612336715. This is
not listed on the My Account tab.

I suspect that this represents a failed attempt to connect to Facebook
from that SB3 via a Beta version Version: 7.4.0 - r28660. It failed as
you couldn't add uppercase to passwords via SB3

3) Because of the above, I uninstalled Facebook and whilst it was then
removed from MyApps on the SBC, the Facebook Screensaver options were
still listed, even after I power cycled the SBC. Is this a bug?

I think the Facebook app may help some friends solve the WAF issue, so
I'm keen to get it working correctly for me.

Mitch

P.S. is a separate forum required for Apps, as they don't sit under any
player nor SBS or MSB exclusively.

Re: [slim] UK ISP Plus.net, Squeeze 7.4 and BBC Radio - anyone?

2009-09-30 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm also on Plusnet in the UK and just installed 7.4 (WHS version) to my
HP Mediasmart. I think I had two plug-ins predating this (BBC iPlayer
and Alien BBC)

I'm happy to test and report on my experience, but I'm confused as to
which BBC route to use (!)

Selecting on my SB3 via IR, but using SBC purely for viewing Now
Playing, I have run through the following
SQUEEZEBOX HOME\INTERNET RADIO\LOCAL\NATIONAL NETWORKS\BBC\STATIONS
(11)BBC RADIO 1 (LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM)
This played first time just now (15:02 BST), displays radio1 logo, show
is listed as Radio 1's Early Breakfast Show then BBC radio 1 98.8.
BBC Radio 1 (london, United Kingdom), 8 minutes uninterrupted, then
tried:-
SQUEEZEBOX HOME\INTERNET RADIO\BBC IPLAYER\LISTEN LIVE\BBC RADIO 1
This played first time just now (15:13 BST), displays different radio1
logo, show is listed as BBC Radio 1, 2 minutes uninterrupted, then
tried:-
SQUEEZEBOX HOME\INTERNET RADIO\ALIEN BBC\BBC LIVE STREAMS\RADIO 1 LIVE
Long delay with SBC showing 'Fetching Track details' for about 20
seconds and SB3 showing Radio 1 live. SB3 lapsed time remains at 0:00.
SBC moves to display Radio 1 Live (twice) and elapsed time incrementing
to about 30 seconds and then restting repeatedly. No sound. SBC shows
generic radio logo.
The installed BBC radio app from app gallery (my first app install but
last.fm, previously a plug-in, was already there) and immediately
tried:-
Squeezebox Home\My Apps\BBC\BBC Radio 1
This came up quickly (2/3 seconds), on SB3 showing 'Now PLaying BBC
Radio 1 by BBC' and SBC showing BBC Radio 1 and on next line BBC.BBC
Radio 1 and the generic radio station icon. This has run effectively
for 4 minutes.

I then repeated the exercise from the SBC (to check consistency in
menus) and had same result for first three methods. The App then went
'fetching track details', 'Buffering 10%' and stalled there, with SBC
elapsed time incrementing, but resetting to zero occasionally (e.g. when
SBC went to screen saver and had to be shook awake).

I experienced the 10% rebuffering problem yesterday when I was using
the penultimate beta from my desktop whilst I installed the production
version to my WHS, but didn't note which route I used (except to say
there were no apps on that).

I'll try and repeat test tomorrow to gather more data.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox over mains network?

2009-08-21 Thread DigitalMitch

I have seen some homeplugs for sale with 4 ethernet connections but the
ones I use, Netgear HDX101, only have one. The 4 port version was rated
85mps not 200 as mine.

I originally bought a pair for streaming video to PS3 but have added 3
more in different rooms for Sqeezeboxes.

After the first pair you can add them singly for this make. Mixing
makes and/or models may not work and I can't comment on whether other
models allow additional homeplugs (you'll have to check their blurb).

Adding the first extra one was tricky as I needed to reset the name of
the first pair to default so I could see the new one. After that it was
easy.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox over mains network?

2009-08-20 Thread DigitalMitch

I've just upgraded my network to ethernet over power (Netgear HDX101's)
for
1 PS3, 1 SB3 and 2 SBR. Another SB3 is wired direct into the router.

However my wireless network is left on for the Controller, my iPhone
and my Boom (which moves between garden, garage and bathroom).

If you don't use the controller then you could disable wireless on your
router, and rely on the IR remotes, Boom or your PC. The rumoured SB
Touch may give another wired control option.

Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-08-12 Thread DigitalMitch

tried the above instructions for Iphone 3.0.1, whilst playing FLAC files
synchronously to 3 other players.

Safari opened Quicktime and this was visible as a player from both
iPeng on the same phone and my Controller. Both indicated the player was
off and I couldn't control it into life. The progress inicator on the
controller would track as if playing but both it and playing volume
would rest to 0 periodically (amd restart on waking the controller).
All play ceased and the controller displayed the error message 'Unable
to play file type ...' Player display persisted even after I had
switched off Quicktime player and had music playing again (player
display corrected by using IR to cycle display size !!!)

I tried the Quicktime player unsync'd from the rest of my players but
had the same result.

I then tried with an old mp3 file unsync'd and it worked, that is I got
streamed music from iphone. However it seemed to carry on playing and
ignore controller instructions (skip track and pause). I tried syncing
it, and after a delay, during which rest of players went quiet, it
started to play sync'd track, whilst controller labelled it off, rest of
players never resumed playing.

This shows it is possible but the limitations may be too much for many
(I can't see a use myself as i've 5 squeezebozes and a controller).

Re: [slim] iPod / iPhone as a receiver

2009-08-12 Thread DigitalMitch

Warning! I had a problem after this experiment.

If the 'Mozilla from ...' player is left sync'd to other players (even
when I'm sure I'd closed the quicktime player) then playing FLAC files
results in the message problem: unable to play file type on the SB3
(but not on the controller) and no music.

Normal service was restored by selecting this defunct player on the
controller and unsync'ing it from my hardware Squeezeboxes.

[slim] Ghost Players

2009-08-12 Thread DigitalMitch

I'm running standard 7.3 SqueezeCenter on an HP MediaSmart running
Windows Home Server outputting to up to 5 players, which are always
sync'd together.
SB3 ethernet to router
SB3 ethernet over power
2 * reciever via ethernet over power
1 * Boom wireless
controlled by an SBC (mostly but occasionally IPeng app, IR or web).

Roughly, each room has the Squeezebox, powered amp and ethernet over
power all plugged into one 4 gang extension lead. I switch the wall
socket off when not using a room, to power down all 3 devices. I've
stopped using the 'Player Off' option as this obviously doesn't switch
off the other two devices and is a pfaff (on SBC: choose player,
reconnect, switch off then choose original player and reconnect, iPeng
is better at this but is not often running)

The squeezeboxes disappear from the web interface quite quickly but
often (I think if they have ever been selected by the controller) they
persist on the controller for hours afterwards.

The controller will even allow such 'ghost players' to be selected but
obviously nothing happens (though volume changes are implemented when
that player is next powered up).

Other times the controller will sit showing the rotating circles saying
'connecting to player'. This will last several minutes but can be quit
via Back/Left arrow on SBC. This will leave the home menu with two
options 'Settings' or 'Choose Player'. 'Choose Player' will still list
the ghost player.

If a real player is selected and 'Settings'/'Synchronize' are selected,
then there is no mention of the 'Ghost player'.

Power cycling the SBC removes all 'ghost players'.

Has anyone else seen this? have any suggestions, I can't find anything
in the wiki or forums.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-08-04 Thread DigitalMitch

I've been suffering rebuffering for a while now, after a couple of years
of stable performance, and I'm fed up so I'm trying to take action.

I've ordered some more ethernet over power (Netgears HDX101) which
successfully stream video to PS3 (which had been unstable over wi-fi),
but until they arrive I'm stuck.

I can't run Netstumbler to review my wi-fi as both my p.c. and server
(HP MediaSmart) are hard-wired with no wifi capability.

Looking at network test on my furthest player and signal strength is
good (avergae 76 minimum 62) but buffer fullness drops at start of
tracks.

My suspicion (with no real data) is that 4 players streaming
synchronised FLAC is using too much of the avaiable wifi bandwidth and
that when coupled with some other uncapturable event (neighbours
microwave ??) causes the rebuffering. I rule out server speed as the
server does nothing but SqueezeCenter and MusicIP. I guess 7.3.3 is
either not as robust at handling this (the rebuffering error message
didn't use to exist) or has increased traffic to handle the improved
sync and exacrebated a problem.

Other than voting for the bug and implementing a ethernet over power,
is there anything else I should be trying?

Ethernet over power may fix this for me, but may not, and even if it
does the root cause is then left unaddressed and may cause problems for
others.

2 * SB3
2 * SBR
1 * Boom
1 * SBC
6 in Total

All wireless from a HP Mediasmart Server, streaming FLAC.

Moved to HP (from QNAP TS101) to have easier ability to upgrade
SqeezeCenter myself)had moved from pc (HP pavilion Pentium 4 3GHz 512M
Ram) because it had run out of hard drive and was struggling to run
SlimServer + TVersity (video streamer) and other apps simultaneously.
The HP server seems to give faster scans (doesn't need to use LAN to
access files) and means I have music to listen to when pc crashes.
Have installed MusicIP onto MediaSmart as well - no issues.

Generally all sync'd together so there is no disruption in music as I
move round the house.

Gave up on SoftSqueeze, as it doesn't sync, and contirbuted to poor pc
performance.

Have since upgraded RAM in pc and seen improved performance (mainly on
Mp3Tag with large library open).

Re: [slim] MusicIp causing a rescan - why?

2008-09-23 Thread DigitalMitch

Phil, the update to the plugin is great.

I wasn't bothered by the scan speed, as I always do a complete rescan
every night.

However, the use of SqueezeCentre's scan of the tag data is far better
than MusicIP and I now get the expected impact of tag changes.

I'll look and see if any other threads (many that I've trawled in vain)
may also benefit from this fix (they'll need to know even when this is
included in 7.3).

Re: [slim] How do you use your Squeezbox/Receiver/Transporter

2008-04-02 Thread DigitalMitch

There's only me in my house so I can only ever listen to one source at a
time. Therefore I sync both players (SB3 and SBR) so I have the same
music everywhere (and will probably get 2 more receivers when they ship
separately) and swith amps/squeezeboxes on/off as necessary.

Gapless isn't a major concern to me, though I do find the delay between
tracks has increased with SB7/Duet - if this is down to sync then I may
un-sync for any prolonged static listening sessions.

I notice a slight difference between my two systems (a Samsung surround
DVD uggh! v. AudioEngine 2's) which I haven't investigated yet - it
could be completely different tone between them, delays within the
Samsung or not quite in-sync SB's (but I've put that last
deliberately).

In discussing the Duet with others, the different source to different
rooms seems very appealing to families and couples.

Re: [slim] Two copies of CDs.. interesting!!!

2008-03-31 Thread DigitalMitch

I've seen multiple copies of CD's many times and always found it was
down to a data error.

I have been adding Album Art via MP3Tag but still using iTunes (for
ripping and editing other data - it's faster and drives my ipod for in
car/at work).

iTunes doesn't seem to relearn from updated tag data unless the track
is highlighted. Unless you carefully highlight every track (or
presumably relearn the iTunes files) it is easy to get misaligned
data.

Typical Data Errors I have been cleaning up are:-

album art missing from a few tracks (typically bonus tracks not on the
on-line database).
Album Title Capitalisation - Squeezecenter differentiates between of
and Of, et. al.
Artist name Capitalisation - same issue as above but less common and
harder to spot.
Punctuation - everyone seems to have a different preferences for
colons, hyphens and semi-colon's
Disc Counts: blank of blank treated differently from 1 of 1.
Genre: matter of opinion.

I've not seen the problem when ripping new CD's, but I'm sure that
there are scenarios depending on tools where the data could get out of
step.

Re: [slim] Two copies of CDs.. interesting!!!

2008-03-31 Thread DigitalMitch

Forgot to say that by data errors what I mean is that the data is
inconsitent between different tracks which you expect to be treated as
one album.

For example for track title, artist (not album artist) and genre

Track1;Nick Cave the Bad Seeds;Alternative
Track2;Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds;Alternative
Track3;Nick Cave The Bad Seeds;Alternative
Track4;Nick Cave The Bad Seeds;Rock

would result in 4 separate albums being listed.
