Re: [slim] Suggestions for Squeezebox player replacement for a non-techie longtime SB user
I appreciate the Airplay caution. I took a quick look around and didn't immediately find any non-Airplay2 devices for sale online. With the Wiim Mini, would the steps be as simple as plugging it in, downloading and activating in LMS the UPNP bridge? Thanks for the help, this thread will remain an easily available reference for me when needed. Hopefully not too soon. ;-) Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117101 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Suggestions for Squeezebox player replacement for a non-techie longtime SB user
Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions, I'll try to catch up: -I don't synchronize players -It's not a question of fear or trepidation about putting together a little gizmo like a Raspberry Pi, it's that I have no interest in doing so. I'll configure LMS and add plugins as required but otherwise, I want no other tasks to do beyond putting a power cord into a wall socket and connecting audio cables. -I have in mind a network audio receiver like a Touch, to connect to existing sound equipment if and when my Squeezebox devices die, but connectible powered speakers might be useful in addition. -The Raspiaudio Muse Mn looks interesting, but I can't find it for sale anywhere. In addition, or instead, it may be that the Airplay world might be a good direction to consider. It's an ecosystem I'm unfamiliar with but your comments have led me to consider Airplay enabled speakers or receiving devices like the Belkin Soundform Connect or something similar by Andover Audio. The same idea as the Raspiaudio Muse but using Airplay for the transport. Any further ideas are welcome, I think I have a good starting point. Thanks again, there's such a wealth of knowledge and technical expertise to draw on with this system, that's what keeps me interested and connected as need be. Cheers! Re: [slim] Suggestions for Squeezebox player replacement for a non-techie longtime SB user
No doubt my knowledge is incomplete or wrong, but here's what I understand: The current Chromecast Video dongle (a competitor to Roku, Firestick, etc) is a portal to connect streaming video sources (Netflix, Prime, Youtube TV, Hulu). Its output is HDMI, to connect to a TV. My legacy audio equipment doesn't have HDMI inputs. The discontinued Chromecast Audio device I referred to has a 3.5mm audio out socket that can be connected to an amp or powered speakers with analog RCA cables. Bluetooth has limited bandwidth not suitable for mid-level audio quality. Maybe you're suggesting using an HDMI to RCA converter, that could connect an HDMI signal (from the video Chromecast device) to RCA inputs in a powered speaker or amp? That's a wrinkle I hadn't thought of. Will that work satisfactorily? I see such converters on Amazon. [slim] Suggestions for Squeezebox player replacement for a non-techie longtime SB user
I've been a Squeezebox user for a long time, dating back to my first player, an SB3, that I picked up in person at the Slim Devices office in Mountain View, CA. I've managed to buy a few spare players used through EBay, some of which have already been put into service. My "collection" is 4 devices in use at my primary residence and 2 at a second home. Thinking forward to the day when used players in reasonable condition will no longer be available, what recommendations are there for ersatz Squeezebox players that are convenient, have a small form factor, produce acceptable sound and are as close to plug and play as the originals? I don't want anything requiring a screwdriver, the assembly of parts (even if they come in a kit), the need for hands-on usage on my part of Linux anything, or the like. Is the easiest path forward simply something like a small Android device with the player app running and output through the headphones socket? Awkward but functional, something I could manage but maybe more than my wife would want to use regularly. Re: [slim] Streaming source for small powered speakers - Touch vs SB Radio
I see, I get what you're saying. While I've spent my adult life in Silicon Valley (and picked up my first SB3 and a few other purchases at the Slim Devices office in Mountain View, and also discovered a former colleague working there on one visit), I'm not an engineer or any other kind of technical person. The thought of cobbling together a Linux-running device from even pre-configured components holds no interest for me. None. I wouldn't do it for myself, much less for someone else's use. As I said, I'll leave it up to my buddy to decide the approach he wants from the conventional choices. I have an old SB3 that I retired from active use some years ago due to erratic behavior. Maybe it's ready for prime-time again? I'll check it out and see if it wants to see daylight again. Thanks for the time to respond. No but I think maybe I wasn't clear enough in an effort to be brief. I thought maybe someone had tried it or, failing that, with the right equipment could spend a few minutes moving stuff around to try it out and share the experience. At best, much of what's on the used market is 10 years old. Much of it can be older. I know my own SB equip is starting to show its age, it's a wonder it's all lasted as long as it has. I was trying to balance the purchase price risk vs functionality for my buddy. If a Radio works reasonably satisfactorily, it's likely to be a newer product and $100 less money on the table to buy something from a stranger. If people have found the sound not acceptable, then the choice is $35 for reasonable but incomplete functionality (Chromecast audio) or $150 to buy full functionality but something that might conk out in 6 months. I was looking for some direction and experience but failing that, I'll just let him decide. His money, his consequence. If there are no other in-the-know responses, I have another friend who has an audio Chromecast, so I can take a laptop over to his house and see what happens with LMS before having my other friend buy the hardware. Yeah, it's cheap, but it'll let me know if the choice involves some use-compromise he should consider and he can decide what he wants. [slim] Streaming source for small powered speakers - Touch vs SB Radio
I'm helping a friend set up a small SB location for his bedroom. For alarm, music at a soft setting, etc., Me, I already have an in-place and working multi-room SB home and all's well. Here's the question - a used SB Radio can be found for under $75. A used Touch is $150 or more. I understand the headphone jack on the Radio could function just fine as audio-out to small powered speakers. Or, the normal analog RCA outputs from a Touch of course work too. This is for a bedroom, not for a major listening location and not for profound enjoyment of high resolution music. Keeping in mind the intended usage, is there a substantial difference in sound quality to justify the extra cost of buying a Touch? Assume that the screen display doesn't matter and that input and control will be accomplished using a smartphone app. Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can share. Re: [slim] Smart people will stay with Squeezebox
I have Squeezebox Server on an always-on Lenovo nettop that they refer to as a "Tiny Desktop". The model is M53 (since renumbered in the product line) with Win 7. It also serves as the central point for network storage and backup with an external drive (that also contains the music files) and it's where the network printer is connected. The configuration dates back more than a decade to when printers weren't wireless and neither printers nor hard drives could be easily connected to routers. I've kept it the same way with hardware replacements because it's simple, it works, and I understand it. Before this I had an Asus EEE box, same idea. The problem with the Boom, which seems to have snapped out of the funk it was in for about a week, was that it dropped its Wifi connection and wouldn't reconnect. I have a very solid Wifi setup (Netgear Orbi and satellite) and the wireless signal strength where it's located has always been above 90%. I was just about to buy a cheap Wifi bridge antenna (to allow an ethernet connection to the Boom) when, in giving it one last chance, it decided all was forgiven and it would connect as per normal. So for now, it's okay. I'll keep in mind that it's repairable, that's good information too. It's used just a few times per week, it plays and operates as it did when new. Oh boy, thanks guys. I guess I gave an unintended but clear demonstration of my ineptness. I didn't understand what was said. This second round of responses together with the first give me a much clearer view. Another dumb question then, so I can better understand Philippe's comment about airplay bridge. The active equipment I have is two Classic 3s, a Touch, and a Boom. (It's the Boom that seems to be dying and I'm thrilled to learn of the Audio Pro C5. Thank you!) I've stayed with Squeezebox Server version 7.6.1 just because it works fine and I'm not a tinkerer. If I switch to LMS to allow me to use the airplay bridge plug-in and maybe the Chromecast one too, will the functionality and appearance, and compatibility with Android and Apple apps I use to control the players, continue and be similar? I appreciate the time spent to respond to my question. I know the SB user group has long been full of clever, very capable and resourceful people. Back when I was a more active visitor to the forum, I'd often see projects discussed that were well beyond anything I could understand, much less do myself. It looks like it's possible to produce player functionality but it involves putting together hardware pieces, doing linux setup steps, and interacting with a linux server going forward. No matter how simple for many, these are not things I have an interest in doing. I'll keep following this thread. My take away is that options are available but are not feasible to be accomplished by me. My best or maybe even only alternative may be to get Sonos equipment as my hardware dies. Re: [slim] the new Squeezebox products are good (because servers and linux are burnt toast)
Of these things - Have time, have curiousity about the device, have knowledge, don't have money, I think at least three of the four need to apply before it makes sense to try one of these plug units. Otherwise, why bother? You can easily find cheap nettops with Windows that'll run all month for less than the price of a beer, depending on your electricity rates. For some, it's less than the price of a coffee. How much cheaper than that does it need to be? mortslim, you've been a longtime devotee of the streaming music services. Most people share your view, while a smaller group thinks of them as nothing more than today's version of Muzak. To the second group, these sites provide low quality background music, hopefully inoffensively, not suitable for serious listening. I'm in that second group, and I'll always continue to buy CDs to add to the collection I listen to daily. I think one of the problems with SB's business model was that the system seems to have been originally designed for people like me, but there are far many people like you. The linux thing is peripheral, you obviously can use the products with any OS you want. But the world wants plug and play, that's where the market opportunity is. [slim] A big THANK YOU to everyone
I want to express my Thank You to everyone who contributed over the years to the creation and development of the Squeezebox product line. I was looking for CD changers/jukebox type arrangements and had found nothing suitable, then I found you. It was love at first sight. Your system changed my life and my home in ways and to an extent I never could have imagined. I think some people are deserving of special thanks. The names I know are ones who have had the most visibility here, like Michael, Andy, Ben, (and I'm sorry, I know there are others). These guys all cared enough to keep working hard to improve the products and system capabilities under less than ideal circumstances. We've all greatly benefited from that. In their spare time (that's a joke), they also worked to help present the right kind of company-to-user interactions, of a kind that probably wouldn't have happened otherwise. They always were helpful in dealing with some of SB's most enthusiastic users, those here in these forums. They all also have done everything possible to keep carrying the flag forward under what's likely been very difficult and frustrating circumstances, even while seemingly taking friendly fire to do so. Then there were the multitudes of others, those who made contributions from outside the company and remained outside. People like Erland, Pippin, bpa, and many others (again sorry for names omitted) whose passions sparked ideas and capabilities that so many have come to rely upon and enjoy. Also, there were so many of y'all who funneled your SB enthusiasm into providing the company testing and feedback help. I've got my spare units and multiple backup copies of server software squirreled away, I should be able to maintain the status quo I want for many years to come. I'd like to say one last thanks to all of you and good luck and best wishes for the future. Many purpose-built devices run linux variants because that's what embedded software tools are now oriented to. And people with requisite programming skiils are widely available. My suggestion, first try the one easiest thing to check. Toby covers it but it's a bit buried in his comprehensive response. The problem could be as simple as interference from a neighbor's Wifi using the same channel you're using. Check what signals are visible in your home. If you see other signals, set yours to the channel (1,6 or 11)with the weakest signal level from neighboring systems that you perceive. If that doesn't help, try Toby's other suggestions. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91998 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Powerline adapters can be sensitive to the condition and topology of your house's electrical wiring. Buy them from someplace that accepts returns, they don't always work successfully. As alternatives, you could also try using a range extender (Wifi repeater) or running a network cable between floors to set up an access point. Place your transmitter in such a way that you minimize the number of walls or solid things the signal needs to pass through. I made my comment in response to the aspect of your comment I quoted that I disagreed with. It wasn't intended to address the specific situation with this company and its few key principals. In most acquisitions it's important to tie up key personnel one way or another for some period, so that they don't set up shop across the street and hire the employees. That was done in this case partially with a contingent earn-out provision that ran a few years. (The contract was publicly released because of Logitech's status as an SEC registrant). The transition having past, and with technology confidentiality and non-use provisions, it's likely the few concerned are now free to pursue other things that might be competitive but without use of the technology owned by Logitech. They may have already started their next adventure. The way to get around the non-compete problem when the permitted exceptions don't apply is to give such people employment contracts that pay an appropriate salary, require exclusivity (can't pursue other employment or compete with the company), and then tell them to stay home. My point was that I don't think buying decisions are much influenced by apps. If you want to listen to music and you walk into the room, are you going to push some buttons on the front panel or IR remote, or go look for your Touch or Pad and then wait for it to boot up so you can use the app? I don't think people who want to sit on the couch and play with an app represent a large portion of potential buyers. The past few years have been tumultuous. Or, are we looking at orphans, products lacking champions within the grand scheme of things at Logitech? On the embedded linux comment, people who have expertise and experience in such matters tell me that most companies are agnostic concerning which embedded OS's to use in products. Decisions are made based on many factors, including cost and timing considerations. Cost can involve many things, including development resources, specialized needs of the software, costs of tools and licenses, etc. Embedded linux can often be the right choice, and oftentimes not. If there were people who worked for nothing to make free construction-grade lumber available for construction, many houses would be build using it. The DACs and other components have in stages been seriously upgraded and enhanced, the firmware significantly improved, the capabilities expanded immeasurably. One comment, that the picture would be more clear after the holidays, could be interpreted as intimating that the ship jumpers were preparing to move. Could some just be staying to finish Touch? Sheer speculation on my part, but the news is not that which would be more characteristic of a kick b product line. Logitech could decide to wind down development, addressing the most serious software problems first, and then just operate in status quo mode. It's not like customers expect continuous software upgrades for hardware products. Everything will continue to work as is. But a loss of the core employee base would make future changes more expensive and less likely. I'm as much of a supporter as anyone, I certainly hope for better news for all concerned, including the great people who work so hard on these products. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=72299 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The sleep timer can be set at the top right portion of the screen. At least that's the case with 7.3.3. Re: [slim] Hardware Beta Testers Take Note
The FTC rules seems reasonable in intent to me. A reader should be able to expect that reviews and comments are independent and without bias. If something of value has been conveyed, all this requires is disclosure. Then come to your own conclusion. Even newspapers often indicate for restaurant reviews, for example, that they pay for the meals being reviewed. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Unless they changed that or I don't understand it (which is quite possible). :( The $600 rule is for payers to report payments to the IRS. Recipients are taxable on any amounts received (in cash or property) for services, they just receive no report on amounts below $600 from any one payer. -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

jdoering;473255 Wrote: Interesting. A while back MSFT quoted the $600 rule when providing free software as a benefit for particapting in one of their usability studies. They neglected to explain the nuances of the rule. If participants got software to keep for no payment, then that is free, isn't it? Did they also say it was non-taxable? jdoering;473255 Wrote: I was actually wondering if hardware to beta testers and such fell into the same classification or if it was somehow different since they're providing it for you to do something on their behalf (versus the MSFT software which was purely an after-the-fact perk). If I understand you, are you thinking about the fact that hardware can't be tested unless it is provided? That's right. What would make it taxable is that the tester can keep it. If the testers sign paperwork beyond a non-disclosure agreement, it might mention that they receive the unit in return for testing. Or maybe no mention is made. Perhaps one of the Radio or Touch program participants could comment? -- Goodsounds Goodsounds's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
