Re: [slim] OpenFrame remote for SB?

2010-04-06 Thread Milhouse

Just been around the three O2 stores in the City of London and they're
all sold out due to high demand (hardly surprising at this price, and
after a bank holiday). New stock coming in Thursday.

This could be a great alternative to a Controller, and is so cheap and
the screen so large and high quality it would make a great Now Playing
display for a Receiver and be a general information display come photo
frame when not playing audio.

[slim] Where have support staff gone re: controller issue questions?

2008-08-10 Thread Milhouse

'Bug #9094' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9094) opened,
configuring the Linksys firmware as a Gateway made no difference (it
still worked, as it should) so it's not a gateway issue, it's entirely
down to the after-market firmware doing something that the official
firmware doesn't. What that something is I don't know - maybe it can be
stopped with input to bug 9094 so that the Controller can work happily
with all routers that do the same thing.

[slim] Where have support staff gone re: controller issue questions?

2008-08-08 Thread Milhouse

Here we go...

My new Duet turned up yesterday and I was able to give it a spin for a
couple of hours - first thing I did was check the button diagnostics
and they all work fine, yay! :) The controller arrived with 7.01
firmware (sorry, can't recall the exact revision).

Next, I tried to connect the Controller to my 7.1 SqueezeCenter on
Win2K3 over Sveasoft WiFi (Talisman 1.3.1 on WRT54GS v2) - no joy as
before. It had no problem establishing the WiFi connection (WPA2
Personal with TKIP), that worked perfectly but the Controller refused
to acknowledge the SC or my SB3 existed.

Then I swapped out the Sveasoft router for my spare WRT54GS v2 running
Tomato 1.21 (also with WPA2+TKIP) - this kind of worked with the
previous controller last time but to my surprise it no longer worked
last night. I erased the NVRAM and reconfigured the router firmware but
still no joy, exactly the same behaviour as with the Sveasoft firmware.
I even tried downgrading the router to Tomato 1.19 but no change (and
port forwarding still doesn't work - this may be a GS specific issue in
Tomato). It's also possible that when Tomato worked with the previous
Controller, I had already installed Controller firmware 7.1 - haven't
tested this yet.

Having established that Tomato was of no use, I reflashed Tomato with
the latest official Linksys WRT54GS v2 firmware and configured it as a
router (not a gateway) and connected it to my network so that now I
have two WiFi networks: Sveasoft (my internet gateway, with firewall
enabled etc.) on 192.168.0.2 and Channel 3 WiFi; Linksys firmware
(router not gateway, no firewall) on 192.168.0.6 and Channel 6 WiFi.
And... it all worked perfectly - the Controller connected to the second
network and it could see my SC and SB3 immediately, no lag, Controller
firmware upgraded flawlessly, everything is good.

However running two WiFi networks isn't reasonable, and I don't
particularly want to return to stock Linksys firmware.

Is anyone with a WRT54GS v2 willing to test Tomato 1.19/1.21 in a
Gateway configuration, and see if it will work with a Controller?

Assuming this is all reproducible (I'd be happy to send anyone a backup
copy of my troublesome routers config) then would it be too much to
expect Slim Devices to take an interest in helping fix a chronic
problem with what is probably the most prolific range of wireless
routers on the planet?

Over the weekend I'll try to capture more detailed logs if I get the
time. I'll also try configuring the Linksys router as a gateway/enable
the firewall and see if that makes any difference to the Controller.

Summary:

FAILURE: WRT54GS v2 with Sveasoft Talisman 1.3.1
FAILURE: WRT54GS v2 with Tomato 1.19
FAILURE: WRT54GS v2 with Tomato 1.21
SUCCESS: WRT54GS v2 with Linksys 4.71.4

If you are lucky someone from the support team will find this thread

team directly. I assume that they like to prioritize problems from
users that have actually contacted them through the official channels,
before starting to search for things to do by looking in the user to
 user discussion forum.

If the problem isn't urgent, I would suggest that you at least register
a bug report at bugs.slimdevices.com. The bug report will then be
scheduled into an appropriate Controller firmware release if Logitech
feels it is an important issue.

You're right Erland - I should and will do that. Once I've had more
time over the weekend to confirm/reproduce what I saw last night I'll
open a new bug in Bugzilla (something along the lines that
Controller/SC don't play nice with Linksys WRT54GS v2 with after-market
firmware). I'll attach relevant SBC/SC and possibly even ethereal logs
if I can, and also contact Support via email referencing the bug - a
phone call is likely to be a waste of time money.

Hard to say if Logitech/SD will see this is an important issue, but as
there's an awful lot of WRT54GS-type routers out there, and many of us
on here seem to be familiar with after-market firmwares it could be
considered a problem waiting to happen for a lot of potential SBC
owners. And the same (or similar) problem may even be affecting other
unrelated routers, explaining the problems their owners are having.
However the lack of interest expressed in the forums regarding
Controller/WiFi problems suggests it won't get an awful lot of
attention - I hope I'm wrong. Controller/WiFi issues seems to be one of
the most commonly recurring problems right now (or maybe that's because
they're the threads I pay most attention to!)

kernel / driver level with the driver being supplied by a vendor. AFAICT
there are only one or two development guys who deal with that
specialised area of SBC and they are very busy.

 There will be two issues
 (i) reproducing the bug
(ii) liaise with vendor to get driver changes and vendors are not
always that responsive as they have their own QA procedures.

Then when a promising solution is found an SBC release has to be
prepared. As a result of a problematic SBC firmeware release there is
an intensive QA done even for betas.

So as I see it, changes/fixes to the SBC will always be slower to
appear compared to changes/fixes to SC.

I don't mind waiting if someone is taking/showing an interest and
working towards resolving the problem... I'll even do what I can to
help resolve the issue. My initial thoughts were to cut my losses, send
it back and claim a refund as not being fit for purpose, but that isn't
in the long term interests of everyone here who may face the same
issue, or Logitech/SD. Once I've opened a new bug and registered a
support case I guess we'll have a better idea how it's going to be
taken forward.

I've already suggested in another thread that Slim Devices should
partner with one of the established audio companies, such as Sony,
Marantz, etc., and produce an A/V receiver with a built-in SqueezeBox
Receiver. SqeezeNetwork and SqueezeCenter can then be used to provide
both 2 channel and mutli-channel audio. Yes, SqueezeCenter can stream
5.1 channel encoded digital audio signals provided that the digital
output is fed into a DAC capable of decoding the 5.1 channel signal,
and almost all A/V receivers have this ability. Just some additional
 food for thought.

A very good idea - my Onkyo TX-NR905 has a built-in ethernet (cable)
based music streamer and it's *rubbish* for two reasons: 1) I need to
switch on my TV to choose tracks and 2) the UI is incredibly clunky.
If, as you suggest, it were based on Receiver + Controller technology
then Onkyo would be on to a sure fire winner. Though the Controller
would need to be more versatile, taking on the role of a regular IR
remote control too in order to keep costs down, something Logitech and
their Harmony division could create I'm sure.

Many mid to high-end (and this is what we're talking about here, not
low-end or budget) amps go into AV racks, typically situated at the
bottom, possibly even hidden out of sight. Even on a £1400 TX-NR905 the
fluourescent display is of a much lower resolution than that on an
SB3/Classic, it's only slightly better in fact than the original
Slimp3! :)

The remote control that came with the Onkyo amp was one of the poorest
quality remotes I have ever used, suggesting Onkyo don't want to invest
too much in remotes if at all possible, as they knowe that most owners
will replace the remote with a higher-end alternative anyway (I
replaced mine with a Harmony One and very good it is too).

Since the Controller isn't cheap, it might be better for amp
manufacturers to make the the Controller an optional extra, including
only the regular cheap-o remote as standard allowing the user to buy a
Controller (assuming they even need one) if they want to use the
built-in Receiver. After all, the Receiver h/w probably has the lowest
cost of the entire Duet solution.

I'd still like to see a combined Controller+Harmony One though! :)

[slim] Where have support staff gone re: controller issue questions?

2008-08-07 Thread Milhouse

There does seem to be a much reduced level of interest from
developers/support staff where Controller/network issues are concerned
- we don't even get suggestions as to what logs could be gathered which
may help pinpoint the issue, in fact we get pretty much nothing at all
which is very unlike the old days.

In the recent past I have been guilty of suggesting that Conbtroller
network problems were due to duff routers not implementing PSM
correctly, but now that I have a Controller which fails to work with a
known-good PSM implementation that clearly isn't always the cause of
these problems. My Controller has had to be returned due to a faulty
button, but when I get a replacement and it continues to have problems
I'll open a support ticket by email (no way am I making a transatlantic
phone number to discuss faulty software, which would cost me a fortune).
However the apparent lack of interest in Controller/network bugs from
Slim Devices on the forums is quite worrying - perhaps it's the
influence of Logitech. I even added to a bug in bugzilla, which has
been ignored.

One thing that did make me laugh - this morning I received a boiler
plate email from Michael Valera asking me to fill in a customer
questionnaire regarding my Duet purchase, starting out with We hope
you are enjoying your purchase etc. Well guess what Michael, no I'm
f*g not! :)

respons and so on) I finally figured out how to do it. My main problem
was actually connecting after moving it around a bit - from upstairs to
downstairs - nice possibility to be able to move it around (even though
bying another unit is ofcourse the best option). Anyways - figured I
would post this here because I see that connecting to the Netopia 3357W
has been a problem also for others).

1st: Telnet your router (or ask your ISP for help)
 - Choose the Stateful Inspection option
 - Under UDP no-activity timeout (sec) set it to at least 320 seconds
 (default is 180 I think?).
NOTE: I am not absolutely sure this is part of my solution, but anyways
this is what I did before I discovered the second of my tips here..

2nd: When connecting: Unplugg the power to the Reciever..
 - Turn it back on
 - Now: Turn of your router and turn it back on
 - Be patient...

Now - every time without failure the SQ Reciever finds the network and
 the music sources .-)

Hopefully this will help somebody else. If not it only took me about 2
minutes to write this post - and telling yourself you succeded with
something is also a good trick .-)

Stateful Inspection, or Stateful Packet Inspection, is part of your
firewall - why is this causing a problem for purely LAN access? What is
the Receiver doing that is being blocked by the firewall which normally
should block only WAN activity?

Also, did you slaughter any black cats while working this out? :)

G-dude Mike - I take back my comments as the Linksys WRT54GS does NOT
have a bad PSM implementation, the WRT works perfectly with Nokia
tablets yet I'm having no luck getting a Controller to work reliably
with a WRT54GS+Sveasoft firmware. The Controller did work with Tomato,
but Tomato has other serious bugs which meant I could not use it long
term.

Ultimately there are problems with Controller communicating with
SqueezeCenter over some WiFi networks that are not due to PSM -
throughout my testing with the Controller I could ping it reliably
(zero packet loss over several hours) and maintain an SSH session
without any problems. Yet SqueezeCenter would actively refuse
connections to the Controller when running Sveasoft firmware - this
doesn't seem to be a WiFi problem, unless some (but not all) requests
are being corrupted during transmission?

Opening or forwarding ports should not be necessary when using a
router-based firewall when all the devices are within the LAN -
obviously opening and forwarding ports is necessary for WAN-devices
that need to communicate with LAN devices, but that's surely not the
case here with the Controller and SqueezeCenter (at least I hope it's

The controller has some bizarre problems working with perfectly ordinary
wireless networks - there's got to be something in the Controller
firmware that trips it up when connecting to a large number of routers,
there are too many people with problems for it to always be a router
issue.

I'm waiting for a replacement Controller (dodgey button on my

the lack of concern about these Controller connectivity issues that are

I can portforward Azurues, SqueezeCenter and the ClarkConect dashboard
 ??

Is it a never version then i assume I should not uppgrade the router
 just now ?

1.2.1 on WRT54GS v2. I tried everything to get it to port forward TCP
and UDP ports for eMule without success, even UPNP didn't work (I saw
it open up the ports in the GUI but no data was ever forwarded). I've
disconnected the Tomato box and replaced it with the Sveasoft box,
ports are being forwarded correctly and my internet connectivity is now
stable once again.

I don't know if it's a problem with the Controller, Slim Discovery or
Sveasoft or all three - I'd like to help Slim Devices get to the bottom
of it if they're interested.

Can we have the choice to go back to the old marking method?

You're asking people to replace hardware without proving that it's the
problem and without making recommendations for what will work.

You already have the facility to test if PSM is correctly implemented
in your router: If your Controller experiences network
connectivity/stability issues when PSM is enabled and yet you have
solid network connectivity when PSM is disabled, then chances are your
router has poorly implemented/defective PSM support... The best option
might be to start a thread or wiki entry discussing known good and
known bad routers with regard to PSM support.

My Controller has just arrived so in the next few days I'll be able to
test it with my Linksys WRT54GS running Sveasoft Talisman 1.3 (or
thereabouts) firmware... this setup works perfectly with my Nokia
internet tablets which have maximum PSM enabled.

Re: [slim] Duet Wireless Network Problems - Possible Solution?

2008-07-25 Thread Milhouse

mikelee999;323019 Wrote:
I have an open case with Logitech about this issue. In my case, after
not using the SBC remote for a while (overnight, typically), it cannot
connect to my Squeezecenter box. 2 things work reliably to correct
 this:

 * disable the powersaving mode on the SBC--it almost never has a
 problem then.

 * turn off/on the SBC remote.

I doubt my issues are about problems in the power save mode for my
router because the SBC controller can be pinged and I can log on to it
remotely from the Squeezecenter computer. It just doesn't connect to
Squeezecenter even though it's on the network.

Turning off powersave mode is unacceptable as a workaround because the
battery drains extremely quickly--it won't last more than a couple of
 hours off the cradle.

At this point, technical support is offering to replace the hardware,
but they don't have a root cause--they're guessing too.

What make, model and firmware are you running on your access point? Is
it the latest firmware, are you sure it has properly implemented PSM?

If disabling PSM on the Controller improves the ability of your
Controller to connect to your Squeezecenter (ie. disabling PSM improves
overall network connectivity) then it seems pretty obvious that PSM is
the problem, and there's a good chance it's your router that has a
stuffed up PSM implementation. Correctly implemented PSM (both on the
client and the access point) should not noticeably impact network
performance but it will significantly improve battery lifetime on the
client.

There's always the possibility that Slim Devices have implemented PSM
incorrectly, but since the introduction of PSM on Nokia hardware almost
12 months ago it has _always_ turned out to be a flaw in the access
point for anyone that has experienced network problems, so much so that
Nokia introduced the ability for the user to turn off PSM on the client
(on the understanding that this is to the detriment of battery life -
there's nothing Nokia can do about [EMAIL PROTECTED] access point firmware).

I genuinely think you're wasting your time replacing the Slim Devices
hardware at this stage - if possible, try another access point. I agree
that turning off PSM is an unacceptable solution, but there's nothing
anyone here can do about faulty router firmware (assuming that it is
the router, which I'd put money on). Only the manufacturer of your
router can resolve this problem (or try after market firmware if it's
available).

There's a Nokia bug on PSM problems 'here'
(https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1636) which references some
access points with known PSM problems. Discussing this further really
is futile unless people include details (make/model/firmware) of their
access points. The Controller is now part of a wider and
non-Logitech/Slim Devices system, yet when battery life is poor in the
Controller the focus is only on the Controller hardware leaving the
likely culprit (the access point) to go undetected.

Re: [slim] Help save Internet radio

This is very bad news indeed.

I listen to radioparadise.com every day on my SB3 and Radio Paradise is
under threat from this decision. There's a very long 'thread'
on their site and according to the station owner BillG on 16 April,
Yahoo and Microsoft (and others) are becoming involved:

The first step is for us to get a bill introduced in Congress. That
will be the first thrust of the lobbying effort of the SaveNetRadio
coalition. This will be funded by some of the deep pockets with a
stake in this issue (Yahoo, Microsoft, etc), so it has a decent chance
at success (in DC, money = power).

Hopefully Logitech/Slim Devices are backing this issue too as I'm sure
I'm not alone in using my SB3 for predominantly internet radio
listening.

Unfortunately I'm in the UK, so can't do much to help from over here!

I would concur that the WAG-type devices are poor/limited, they were
always brain-damaged pieces of kit designed to be purchased by the

which could do a better job!) Judging all Linksys products based on the

Anyone know if these powerline devices work OK when plugged into 4 or

However there's a shortage of power outlets near the ADSL router

second AP anyway so assuming you have only one SB1 it would be better
to convert it to 11g (particularly as the existence of the 11b network
would not be good for your 11g network).

Nobody said that amateurs were the cream of the crop - you should
re-read the post that you have misquoted. The post actually suggested
that many open source supporters and developers are professional
programmers who maintain and contribute to open source projects as a
result of their passion for their chosen profession. Programmers who
are passionate about what they do are a rare breed and usually very
good - hence the cream of the crop. Granted enthusiastic amateurs are
involved with open source as well - and a good thing too - but to
suggest that even amatuers are not up to snuff is offensive and
indicative of someone who hasn't a clue about what they speak.

An amateur or even professional coder could submit a poorly written
patch to an open source project, but due to the review process employed
by most of these projects the code will be improved before it is checked
in, ensuring that on the whole the quality of submissions is
maintained.

And over my almost 20 years in software development I've seen vast
quantities of poorly written software supposedly produced by
professionals.

To be honest, professional programmer is an utterly meaningless
description as it simply describes someone who is paid to programme.
Your belief that such people will automatically produce good quality
software is misguided beyond belief as paid programmers are just as
capable of turning out garbage as any open source volunteer.

Anyway, this thread has seriously veered OT - nice hijack keithleng, if

I don't know what the cause is, but as soon as you mentioned you had a
Belkin I stopped reading... from personal experience (and the shared
experience of others) Belkin are utter pants unless you have a 100%
Belkin wireless network.

There may be a problem with your SB, but chances are it's the Belkin
that doesn't like talking to anything else but another Belkin (and even
then, sometimes not even another Belkin!)

Try a Linksys WRT54GS or something from Netgear - I would recommend
either brand. But avoid Belkin like the plague.

2005-09-18 Thread Milhouse

I've just finished reading the October Computer Shopper and November
T3, and as far as Slim Devices are concerned, you guys just don't
exist - very depressing reads from a SD point of view.

These mags had several articles about audio streaming and the Roku,
Sonos and Netgear take center stage.

Computer Shopper has an article about hacking the Buffalo LinkStation
to run TwonkyVision server, citing the MP101 and Roku as possible
clients (quote: Another good product is Roku's SondBridge, which costs
more but comes in a remarkably good-looking cylidndrical container and
won't look out of place with even the smartest hi-fi system).

T3 starts with a gushing letter from a reader singing the praises of
his Roku, and has an item suggesting the Sonos is best for multi-room
music. There's also half-page ads from Roku and Sonos.

It's been many months since I've seen reference to Slim Devices or
Squeezebox in any of the magazines I read each month - in comparison
Roku and more recently Sonos seem to be doing a fine job of getting
their products in front of prospective buyers. :(

Perhaps Roku and Sonos have a better UK distributor?

I know this sounds like a complaint, but that's not the intention -
it's simply a heads up that the competition are doing a far better job
of placing their products here in the UK. I don't know how well
Squeezebox is selling in the UK - well, I hope - but I fear that given
the lack of publicity, Joe Public doesn't even know it exists and
instead buys a Roku (or if he's well-heeled, a Sonos).

to identifying the latest/hottest audio streaming devices. Do you
honestly think he's going to end up buying a Squeezebox? Not everyone
will research the audio streaming market to the n'th degree - they'll
do basic research (ie. read a few magazines) and on the basis of their
new found wisdom make a purchase if the price is right. Given this
scenario, Squeezebox won't get a look-in as it's not mentioned anywhere
- effectively, it doesn't exist!

Are you honestly telling me that Squeezebox is selling itself, by
word-of-mouth and without any traditional advertising? Trust me this
won't work, I've been here before with TiVo UK and word-of-mouth works
only so well.

Roku/Sonos may well have a need or desire to stimulate sales - from
this can it be concluded that Slim Devices do not? I'm really sorry if
this offends, but your statement is nonsensical unless you and Slim
Devices are being utterly complacement about their position within the
market - at this rate you will appeal to only a small number of
potential purchasers, those who have taken the time to discover the
existence of Slim Devices and Squeezebox. The bulk of your potential
sales will go to Roku who have taken the time/effort/expense to get
their product out there.

Maybe that's your plan - to appeal to the more discerning purchaser,

It's interesting that audio-streaming devices straddle both fields, and
given the more-audiophile credentials of the Squeezebox it's possible it

However if Roku/Sonos dominate in HiFi magazines too, this surely
indicates that whoever is responsible for marketing Squeezebox in the

I'm about to submit an enhancement request to have SlimServer support my
two-slot toaster.

Come on guys, there's a limit to what is and what is not supported by
SlimServer, surely? The fact that NSLU2-type devices are capable of
running SlimServer is great, but SlimServer is designed to run on kit
with a minimum level of horsepower - something like a Pentium/2 with
128Mb RAM - and expecting SlimServer to run on the Squeezebox itself is
pretty unrealistic.

Building a low cost, quiet PC is not a big deal these days and try
'SlimCD' (http://www.herger.net/slim/detail.php?nr=763kategorie=slim)
if you want minimum hassle.

I don't want future SlimServer functionality to be curtailed because
SlimDevices are attempting to support devices with only slightly more
computing capacity than a pocket calculator. Just because it can,
doesn't mean it should.

sells itself, the problem is getting that first step.

I totally agree... 4 years ago I bought a TiVo and would discuss it
with people who were unable to differentiate it from a standard VCR.
Now that Sky have spent millions advertising their Sky+ product Joe
Public is beginning to get and now crave the concept of PVR/DVRs.
People who weren't interested in a TiVo 4 years ago wouldn't live
without a Sky+ PVR (a shame they didn't cotton on sooner and buy the
superior product, but there you go!)

It's all about raising awareness - having a streaming MP3 player in the
living room is not something people really need. Yet people will quite
happily sit in front of a PC and listen to music, or rip all their MP3s
for their iPod and still keep their CDs next to their HiFi.

With a streaming media server you buy the CD, rip it, put it in storage
garage and never play it again. It's about changing how people listen
(and manage) their music - simple, clear examples of the benefits of
streaming kit is required in mass media publications (Sunday papers,
for example). Obviously many of the benefits of streaming media apply
to all the manufacturers (Slim, DLink, Netgear, Roku etc.) but Squeeze
Network is a key differentiator in Slim Devices favour.

IMHO the inability to easily listen to the BBC will count as a big
negative for Joe Public UK. My parents listen to Radio Alba (Radio
Scotland, Radio nan Gaidheal for Gaelic, Real Audio stream) and if this
were available on Squeeze Network they'd be sold as would many other
avid BBC listeners. Unfortunately AlienBBC is beyond most people,
including my parents.

BBC Radio on Squeeze Network would be a killer feature - of course it
would be far better if the public funded BBC didn't use proprietary
encoding, but that's another issue (anyone know if they have any plans
to change to MP3 streaming?)

Total references for the SB2: Zero.

Even the MP101 got a write up. And in a comment giving examples of
available streaming kit just about every available device got a mention
EXCEPT for the SB2 - one almost gets the impression it's a conspiracy!

The SB2 definately needs it's profile raised in the UK, but it's likely
the same could be said for the rest of Europe too. This is definately
going to be a problem long term for Slim Devices but is this something
their distributors should be sorting out, or Slim? Deep pockets will be
needed to fund any in-your-face advertising, so perhaps a review on
theregister.com would help raise the profile globally without costing
too much?

Word of mouth sales will only work so well - trust me, I'm a UK TiVo
owner! Eventually maintsteam marketing is required to sustain the
product, and in this regard SB2 is an also ran. :(

The latest version 2.00 PSP firmware (available today for Jap machines,
soon for US) includes a web browser (from NetFront) and it works very
well with Handheld (Fishbone is just about usable too).

Unfortunately Handheld suffers from the same Browse Artwork bug as
NetFront 3.2 on my iPaq - the first and second album artwork display
OK, then subsequent album artwork repeatedly overwrites the second
album image. A minor issue however, but would be nice to see fixed :)

Version 2.00 at long last includes WPA-PSK/TKIP which is working a
treat with my Linksys WRT54GS (running Alchemy firmware from Sveasoft
but should be fine with stock Linksys firmware also).

PSP firmware download details 'here'

However I think the 'Nokia 770'

make a better remote control - using the analog joystick on the PSP to
navigate along with the relatively small and low res screen means it's

Pentium M based motherboards are also available and would be more

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Who wants a learning SB remote?

- I'd buy one, but no more than $20
- I'd buy one, but no more than $50
- I'd buy one, but no more than $100
- Nope, not interested at all
- Future versions of the SB should have this as standard

My Pioneer AV receiver came with a learning remote - first thing I did
was teach it the codes for my TiVo, Sony DVD and original SLIMP3...
since then I've upgraded the Slimp3 to an SB2 and now SBG2, and the
remote control for the last 2 has never been taken out of it's bag!

I don't think a learning remote should be supplied by Slim Devices -
there is plenty of choice out there if you want one, many owners most
probably already have one courtesy of their AV receiver. Nowadays
pretty much any decent ( £500/$800) AV receiver comes with a basic
learning remote. If SD were to supply a learning remote it would have
to be the best thing since sliced bread (with a price to match)
otherwise they'll be criticised for supplying a sub-standard remote
when compared with Logitech/Harmony, All-in-One, Phillips etc. -
they'll never please everyone, so why bother trying?

I'd much rather the styling of the SBG2 were improved rather than waste
time and effort on a learning remote - recent reviews of the SBG2 have
slated it's looks when comparing with the Roku, and frankly I wish it
were better looking too :)

2005-07-09 Thread Milhouse

I've generated some test tones (100-3000 in 100Hz increments, then
1000Hz incrememnts up to 14Khz) and it seems that the 8-bar Spectrum
Analyzer is not weighting the lower frequencies as strongly as it
possibly should. I tested using MP3 format as for some reason my SBG2
wouldn't play the WAV formats.

It would appear that the following frequencies correspond to each bar:

Code:

  Bar 1 - 0Hz - 1000Hz
  Bar 1 2 - 1100Hz - 1900Hz
  Bar 2 - 2000Hz - 2500Hz
  Bar 2 3 - 2600Hz - 3000Hz
  Bar 3 - 4000Hz
  Bar 4 - 5000Hz
  Bar 4 5 - 6000Hz
  Bar 5 6 - 7000Hz
  Bar 6 - 8000Hz
  Bar 7 - 9000Hz
  Bar 7 8 - 10,000Hz
  Bar 8 - 11,000Hz
  Bar 7 8 - 12,000Hz
  Bar 7 - 13,000Hz
  Bar 6 7 - 14,000Hz
  Bar 8
  14,000
  13,000
  12,000
  11,000
  40005000 60007000 80009000 10,000
  2600-3000
  2000-2500
  1100-1900
  0 - 1000
  Bar 1 | Bar 2 | Bar 3 | Bar 4 | Bar 5 | Bar 6 | Bar 7
  | Bar 8 |

For some reason frequencies above 11K are begin to appear in lower bars
of the analyzer.

It would better, I think, if the first 4 bars were used to represent
frquencies between 0-3500Hz, with the remaining 4 bars used for
frequencies above 3000Hz. This may give a better representation that at
present.

eg.

Code:

  11,000+
  10,000
  9000
  8000
  7000
  6000
  5000
  4000
  3100-3500
  2600-3000
  2100-2500
  1600-2000
  1100-1500
  600-1000
  0 - 500
  Bar 1 | Bar 2 | Bar 3 | Bar 4 | Bar 5 | Bar 6 | Bar 7
  | Bar 8 |

I'll take a look and see if I can tweak anything in squeezebox2.pm, but

[slim] Spectrum Analyzer reversed?

2005-07-03 Thread Milhouse

Since I first got my SB2 (having ugpraded from a Slimp3 to an SBG) it
always struck me that the Spectrum Analyzer seems to be reversed, that
is the high frequencies are on the left with the lower freqencies on
the right. This seems the opposite of most other spectrum analyzers
I've ever experinced, where bass/low frequency is always on the left.

Is this intentional, my imagination, or can it be reversed as I would
prefer low frequencies on the left as this is what I'm used to (perhaps
a user pref?)

Finally, anyway to show remaining buffer when a visualisation is
enabled - the remaining buffer is always useful when listening to
internet radio. It seems the remaining buffer (or buffer fullness)
isn't shown when a visualisation is enabled, even if the options is
enabled in the user preference.

[slim] Re: Spectrum Analyzer reversed?

2005-07-03 Thread Milhouse

Not sure, I'm referring to the frequency spectrum analyzer, the one with
multiple bands for each frequency - it seems high frequencies are on the
left, low frequencies on the right which seems to be the opposite of the
norm... are you referring to the two-band analyzer which I guess
represents left/right channel, although I don't use it so can't be sure
:)

[slim] Re: Spectrum Analyzer reversed?

2005-07-03 Thread Milhouse

Thanks for the info kdf, and Max - sorry for my confusion.

I tend to use the small spectrum analyzer and remaining time setting
which results in 8 bands, each of which (I assumed) represented
distinct frequencies... it wasn't obvious there was any mirroring going
on as I quite often observe a peak in a left-most band when for example,
a cymbal is playing, and bass seems to affect the right most bands.

Will now read the links to Vidurs explanation. :)

This represents left and right channels summed together, ie mono. The
left side of the display is bass and right side is treble. If it doesn't
look correct, try a different track having more distinct transients on
 the high end.

I'll do some more investigation and try to find some test tones, shame
I can't rip my Avia DVD AV setup disc - I'll try it later in the week
if I get the right software... :)

Perhaps the limited number of bands is confusing my ear/eye
co-ordination, as the left-most band seems to see more activity than
would appear reasonable.

(Note that this isn't a specific issue with the latest 14 firmware or
6.1b1, it's always been this way.)

32 for left ch and 32 for right ch.

Left bass is on the left
Right bass is on the right

To the immediate left and right of the middle of the screen are the
left and right treble bands, respectively.

Right gotcha, that makes sense. The penny has dropped at last! ;)
