[slim] Off topic question on Android Auto Qobuz streaming
As the title suggests - a slightly off topic question on Qobuz streaming. It's working fine with LMS and all my SB clients, and it's working fine on my Android phone. It's suddenly stopped working on Android Auto in the car. Other apps like Apple Music and Spotify and Radio Streaming Apps are working fine on Android Auto, so it appears to be something specifically connected to Qobuz on Android Auto. Was working fine until about a week or two ago. Has anyone seen this behavior? Any suggestions / solutions? I have written to Qobuz Help, but am still to hear back from them TIA, N Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116897 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There's quite a lot of options available that don't involve replacing your entire computer! It's not clear from your post whether you want to upgrade your Mac Mini or your MacBook Pro - clearly a desktop would be better for LMS, but it really depends on your use case scenario. You can easily plugin external storage to your Mac, and store all your music on it. If your HDD is maxed out, freeing up some place on it will certainly improve performance. I have a 2009 vintage MacMini where I have upped the RAM, replaced the original HDD with an SSD, and replaced the non-working optical drive with a larger 1.5TB HDD for my lossless music; and it absolutely flies. If you share details of your computer, it might be possible to make clearer suggestions. Re: [slim] No competition for Sonos! :-(
I have been using both products for over 7 years now, and neither is inferior - they are just two very different things. I find myself using the SqueezeBoxen far more often than Sonos, but for most people Sonos is easier to deal with, and simply just works out of the box. Sure there are library size limitations, inability to stream higher res files, and no ability to tweak as with Music IP integration, room correction, etc, but that probably makes it more robust and indeed for most playback scenarios it works superbly. Re: [slim] Can I stream my music over the internet?
SoftSqueeze should work for you if you can already remotely connect via SSH. All you need to do is tunnel two TCP ports 3483 and 9000, which SoftSqueeze handles. Make sure you have the latest version of SoftSqueeze. Under preferences, put your server hostname as localhost. Under networking, hostname should again be localhost. HTTP port 9000 and SlimiProto Port 3483. Under SSH, click on the use SSH tunnel checkbox, enter your SSH server IP address or dynds name if you have one, SSH port 22, your SSH login name and password from your remote machine. Re: [slim] Best Hard Drive Format...Switched From PC To Mac
There's quite a lot of options for Mac users: 1) The default HFS+(J) is probably the simplest. If you are working in an all Mac environment, this should be fine. If you need cross platform support, most linux distros allow you to access this as read only and you can download a 'free read/write linux HFS+ driver from Paragon' (http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-linux-per/). For Windows access to HFS+ drives you can use the 'MacDrive commercial drivers from MediaFour' (http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive) or 'Paragon' (http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/). 2) Plain old FAT32 is aging but will work out of the box with almost any OS including directly with a SqueezeBox Touch. The main limitation is the 4GB individual file size, which might be a problem if you intend to store video files on the same drive as well, but for audio files only, it should not be a problem. 3) You can stick with NTFS and use either a 'free open source Mac read write driver like NTFS-3G' (http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download/) or commercial versions from 'Tuxera' (http://www.tuxera.com/products/tuxera-ntfs-for-mac/) or 'Paragon' (http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/). NTFS has relatively robust cross platform support either out of the box or through open source drivers, including native access by the SqueezeBox touch. 4) As stated above exFAT from Microsoft is another option. It is similar to FAT32 but removes the 4GB file size restriction. It supported by most recent releases of Windows (I think Win 7 and above, but can be added to XP and Vista as a free download) and MacOS (I think OS 10.6 and above). There is also a FUSE read/write driver for linux, and because this format is the official format for SDXC flash cards, we are likely to see a lot more support in the future. 5) Finally if you would like to protect your data well, you might want to consider ZFS. A commercial mac version from 'Ten's Complement' (http://tenscomplement.com/) called 'Zevo Silver Edition' (http://tenscomplement.com/our-products/zevo-silver-edition) recently became available and there's also an 'open source version' (http://code.google.com/p/maczfs/). -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93678 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

erland;646795 Wrote: Has anyone seen a good feature comparison between Squeezebox and Sonos ? I think you've covered most of the points. You could do a search on the slimdevices and sonos forums for a comparison I did about 5 years ago; there have obviously been some changes, but the basics remain the same. I've been using both platforms ever since, but I find that I use my SqueezeBoxen a lot more. Some major advantages of each platform as I see them: Sonos advantages: 1) Easier to setup and operate for newbies and non-techy types. It really does just work. 2) More robust networking because of their peer to peer mesh networking. 3) Rock solid multi-player synchronization. 4) Music access is over SMB, so it works well with most OSs and NASs. It does use UPnP for it's own communication, and a Zone Player can be used as a UPnP renderer too, but that's not how it accesses external media. 5) Everyone makes a big deal about the cost. But if you think about it, each ZP90 zone player is only $50 more than an SBTouch if you have an Android or iOS Device to control it with. Of course you will need to add the $50 bridge if your first Zone Player is away from a wired connection. Squeezebox advantages: 1) Ability to handle higher than 44.1 KHz and 16 bit files with many of the models. I increasingly have more of this material, so it works well for me. 2) Display on player for most models. 3) The responsiveness of an IR remote for most models 4) Ability to configure menus easily, and sort music by multiple criteria. Sort by newly added music is something I use very frequently. 5) Plugins! MusicIP and the Spicefly SugarCube plugins are in themselves worth the price of entry. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89332 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Is it only the sorting possibilities that differs compared to Squeezebox ? The menus are not configurable and options available are Search, Artists, Contributing Artists, Albums, Composers, Genres, Tracks, Playlists and Folders. Have you compared the audio quality between Squeezebox and Sonos ? Using the analogue outputs I think the SB2 sounded a little bit better than my ZP80, but not hugely better. I haven't recently done a comparison with the Touch in analogue output mode. I use the digital outs to feed to a Cyrus DAC-X and a TacT S2150XDM Amplifier. In a digital out usage scenario, I seriously doubt that there is a reproducible difference between Sonos and SqueezeBox that will hold up to blind testing, though in my early listening I felt that the SB2 was very marginally better, it was probably not real. One of these days I will do a side by side with my SB2, Touch and ZP80 from both analogue and digital outputs. One thing I missed in my previous post is that SqueezeBox handles ReplayGain tags much better and gives users much more control over how the tags are utilized. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89332 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It's really just using the iPod like a wireless hard drive via Sonos' wifi mesh network, and allowing access of the contents through the normal Sonos controllers. I can see it being quite useful at parties when people come over with iPods and want to play it through your system. It does not use Apple's Airplay to stream. That's right, from a PC, your iTunes account (PC again), or something that was ripped to MP3. So if you already have them, why not just stream them with SBS, Doh. This Sonos thing is for people with more money then brains! Like most of the users who frequent this forum, I find the Squeezeboxes more suited to my requirements than the Sonos setup. That said, both are excellent products and each has areas where it shines over the competition. I personally own multiple Squeezebox devices (SB2, Duet and Touch) and Sonos devices (2 ZP80s and 1 CR100). It's fine to have a preference for one product over the other, but I see no need to ridicule a competitor's product or insult the people who use them. To your specific issues - There are a lot of people who are absolutely fine listening to lo-res music. But that is beside the point. I don't see how this product is automatically linked to poor quality or mp3. The files come from wherever you get them from, including lossless rips from your own CDs. I have friends with iPod classics full of lossless files ripped from their CDs. I can easily envisage a scenario where it would be quite convenient to plug such an iPod into a Sonos dock and listen to it through my Sonos connected through a Cyrus DAC-X or or TACT Digital Amplifier. These files would not be on my SBS and I might not want to copy them over and index every time said friend visits. I see this as quite a convenience and I see nothing lo-res about this approach. Finally to your point about money over brains - you should know that a Sonos ZP90 + Free iPhone/iPod/iPad control app at $ 350 is only about $40 more expensive than SB Touch + iPeng, so it's not that big a deal. my 2c -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82988 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Is my SB2 dying?
I've had my SB2 for about 4.5 years now, and its worked beautifully until recently. When it's on it seems to be working fine. But if I toggle the mains or disconnect and reconnect the power supply (either end), restarting seems to be an ordeal for the device. It goes to the Logitech screen for less than a second and then goes blank, and keeps repeating this in a loop for several minutes. If I am lucky it comes on after several such loops. Often it proceeds a few more steps and blanks out before starting, and sometimes I just give up and return in a few hours and try again until it comes on. Fortunately it is on now. I've tried a factory reset (obviously this is not a total reset because it shows the Logitech welcome rather than the SlimDevices welcome), but that hasn't made a difference. Is my SB2 dying of old age? Could it be just the power supply? Has anyone seen this behavior? Is there a solution (other than getting an SB Classic or Touch)? There are two replay gain tags added when you use Foobar2K to analyze by album - track gain and album gain. You could use Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/ (Mac or PC), to send audio to your Airport Express from SqueezePlay or SoftSqueeze or SqueezeSlave. Its not straight from SqueezeCenter to Airport Express, but it achieves the same goal, and it works reasonably well. There's also this for Windows PCs, but I've never tested it: http://www.ovesens.net/default.asp?PageId=8 I've been trying to do the same thing on Linux using 1) Raop-play: http://raop-play.sourceforge.net/ http://www.jroller.com/nwinkler/entry/raop_play_code_updates 2) GSTransmit: http://www.el-tunes.com/ 3) PulseAudio: http://pulseaudio.org/ Finally, a completely different way to acheive what you want would be to use the Firefly DAAP Server. All the served files will show up as shared iTunes libraries on your subnet, and then you can use iTunes' native streaming to AirportExpress / AirTunes. If you have non-iTunes compatible files, then Firefly can be configured to transcode them on the fly e.g. FLAC to wav, without losing metadata. P.S... Getting a Duet Receiver or SB3 is still the best option, because none of the above will allow that kind of control or multiroom syncing because of the delay involved with transmitting to AirTunes. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64602 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Mac related question
You have quite a few options. You could: 1) As suggested by several users above, use XLD. Here is a guide for XLD: http://jungle.sk/XLD_Tutorial/ 2) Continue to use EAC in Windows with BootCamp (I am not too sure if a virtualized solution like Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox will allow you to carry out AccurateRips). If you want to go with the 2nd option, you could: a) Install WinXP in BootCamp on a FAT32 Partition. MacOS will be able to access that directly (read/write). b) You could use NTFS for your BootCamp Partition and MacOS will be able to natively read from it, but not write to it. c) Use NTFS for your BootCamp Partition, and install the open source NTFS-3G drivers http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ that use MacFuse to read and write to the NTFS partition, or use the proprietary solution from Paragon http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ . d) Use NTFS for windows, and install MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ on the Windows side, which will allow you to access the Mac HFS+ partition from windows, and hence transfer the EAC ripped files. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=61167 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I should point out that if you go the .iso route, then you won't be able to use a FAT32 file system on the storage medium, because most images are likely to be 4GB / file. Re: [slim] Apple TV or Popcorn Hour
I too was trying to select from a bunch of devices including SlingMedia's SlingCatcher, the TViX devices, AppleTV and the Network Media Tank Devices (Popcorn Hour). The SlingCatcher was interesting because it would allow me to watch my remote SlingBox on TV in addition to watching local video files. However, the reviews were terrible, and video format support was not as extensive as the other deices. The TViX systems seemed to have quite a following, but were quite expensive. So I narrowed it down to the other two. The GUI on the AppleTV (as with most things Apple) is far superior to that on the Popcornhour, and if you don't mind living within the Apple ecosystem - it should be the best choice. While its native format support is a bit limited, if you are up for a bit of hacking, you can enhance its functionality and format support using Boxee.tv or XBMC. Also as you mention, the supplied internal HDD is nice. I personally went with the Popcorn hour because in many ways it is similar to the SqueezeBox. Out of the box it supports almost every format under the sun. It is constantly under development, and even though its GUI is a little crude as compared with AppleTV - it is perfectly usable. The option to add a 2.5 or 3.5 SATA HDD (on the Popcorn Hour A-110), the 2 external USB ports (2 host and 1 client), the plethora of connectivity options and the stunning quality of images pushed me towards the Popcorn hour. The SMB, NFS, FTP (ability to act as a NAS), and BitTorrent capabilities are very useful, and the UPnP support should allow control from an external renderer like a Nokia Internet Tablet, or N series phone, and also from an iPhone once you install some UPnP control software. Hope that helps. P.S...As a side note, if you don't need network support and all the other bells and whistles, you can get the WD HD media player for under $100 - it supports nearly all of the formats that the NMT devices do, but you have to plug in your USB drives directly to the player. jmanings;382909 Wrote: Excuse the off topic thread, but recent posts on these here have got me interested Im considering buying one of these 2...anyone care to give me some pro's/cons on wach and how they compare? Re: [slim] FLAC format for videos?
Its a good question, and something that I have not been able to find a simple solution to for a couple of years. However, in the interim I have been ripping my DVDs to full size ISO images. This ripping process gets rid of the encryption and removes macrovision and region restrictions and other such annoyances, without further compressing the MPEG2 stream or transcoding to a different format. I say further compress, because the DVD source material is already compressed using a lossy algorithm. The full sized ISOs are the closest thing to FLAC+CUE for CD ripping because you can recreate the original DVD without additional loss from these, or convert them to different future formats as they become available. You can directly watch these on Win/Mac/Lin using VLC or some similar program or by mounting the ISO and using the default DVD player. An increasing amount of hardware devices support direct playback of DVD ISOs from local/attached drives or over the network. Unfortunately support for direct ISOs is not nearly as ubiquitous as support for xvid/divx/avi files or h.264/mp4/mkv files which are the more common formats for video files. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53287 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Few artists sort with last name
I've noticed this only recently after updating to SC 7 - a few artists have suddenly started sorting with their last name rather than first name. I have looked at the tags and can't seem to find anything unusual. Does MusicBrainz Picard put in some 'normally not visible' tags that SC can read? Two examples are Tori Amos who now hangs out under 'A', rather than 'T' where she used to live before, and Damien Rice who has suddenly moved into the 'R' block from the 'D' block. Re: [slim] Few artists sort with last name
You're right. There were additional ARTISTSORT and ALBUMARTISTSORT tags in there. And my hunch that it had something to do with MUSICBRAINZ also turned out correct. So I guess I have 2 options there. I can either (i) go into the tags and remove all that info wherever its present (I recall coming across a thread earlier today where someone was trying to remove an iTunes Volume Normalization tag - I guess this should be procedurally similar) or, if possible, and I would prefer this, (ii) have slimserver ignore these specific tags. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Two questions on remote streaming: Dynamic DNS Variable bitrate
I have two unrelated questions about remote streaming. 1) If you want to access a remote SlimServer that has a changing IP address with a Physical SqueezeBox (not with softsqueeze - I know how to do that), is it possible to enter a Dynamic DNS host name (as against an IP address) onto the device? Or alternatively can one of the plugins on slimserver (such as Michael Herger's ServerSwitcher be configured to do a DNS lookup and then allow switching to that remote server via the remote (or the controller) interface? 2) I currently have my flacs transcoding to 192 kbps mp3s for remote streaming, which is fine. But I was wondering if there is a way to dynamically adjust the encoding bitrate in real time in response to the available bandwidth? i.e. something like the Slingbox does - I have seen it scale from 8mbps down to 96 kbps depending on what was available. Which codecs support this feature? wma? hd-aac? open source? -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42812 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Slim Server and Firefly Server
Can't remember exactly why I went in that direction to start with; but there are several reasons I have stuck with FLAC and EAC .. mostly because this combination has met most of the criteria that are of important to me. 1) Quality - FLAC is lossless, no bits thrown away. 2) Compression - Yields about 55-60% compression on average. That means more music per storage $ spent as compared with WAVs and AIFFs. 3) Tagging metadata - well documented and standardized. Ability to store info about tracks, album art, metadata like replay gain, MusicBrainzIDs, MusicIP PUIDs, LastFM fingerprints, etc. This becomes really important with large collections, and I am unclear about the status of AIFFs and WAVs in this respect. 4) Device support - Natively supported by the SqueezeBox2 (that is you don't need server side transcoding and you can seek within tracks) and the Sonos ZP80, both of which I own. 5) Platform support - works on all the platforms I use routinely - Mac, Win Linux. 6) Its open source - I like that! and completely free - even better! 7) EAC followed naturally once I decided on FLAC. While I am sure that iTunes provides perfect rips 99.9% of the time - I feel better ripping with EAC and AccurateRip. I usually rip in the fast mode, and only if AccurateRip gives a mismatch do I use the secure mode. 8) Finally I hate the way iTunes messes with my files (playing with the tags, volume settings, and even locations) even though I like its UI. Firefly allows the tracks to be accessed in a read only manner. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41735 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Its exactly the opposite for me. More often than not, it is the Sonos that stays idle, while the SB2 is constantly running. As I've said in a different thread, I love the display on my SB2 and I prefer its single handed remote operation over the two handed Sonos controller and its touch wheel (I am not a big fan of the wheel even on the iPod where it is implemented slightly better than on the Sonos controller). I also am very happy with the ability to do LastFM, Pandora (with LastFm scrobbling), AlienBBC and other fun stuff on the SB3. That said however, the Sonos is certainly a beautiful piece of kit; the less geeky members of my family seem to prefer it over the SB and I would recommend it without reservations to anyone. Not only is it easier to setup and use in a multi-room scenario, but when you are in a larger room using the Sonos controller become preferable to using the Slim IR and squinting at the SB display. [slim] Bootable SlimServer External HDD ... wishful thinking?
I really like the idea behind Michael Herger's SlimCD... so to take that a step further ... how hard is it to: 1) Create a similar CD for the PowerPC platform? Re: [slim] Slimserver Startup problem on mac
Thanks .. That did it! As much as I love my SqueezeBox and SlimServer, I think my parents could never have been able to troubleshoot something like this by themselves. There really needs to be some sort of self contained, self updating server box, which doesn't need any configuration, and which either contains its own hard drive or can directly be attached to a USB/firewire/eSATA external drive that serves all the SqueezeBoxen/Transporters. (Not as a replacement for the current form of Slimserver, but simply as an option - so geeks such as myself can continue to have all the flexibility we desire). Yeah yeah I know you can configue your NAS to run slimserver - I had my Buffalo PPC Linkstation running slimserver 6.1 for several months extremely well, but that's really not for my parents. They just want to listen to music .. not play around with computer settings. Nice remotes that make use of all this Jive work will be icing on the cake. This would put the Squeezebox+Slimserver combo way ahead of the Sonos System IMHO - Sonos still requires a NAS with SMB shares, or a running computer with shares open. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37697 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

However, their controller costs $399, just like the N800 (which may even be less after discounts), but as you said, the N800 can do SOOO much more, it's almost (no it is) a no-brainer if the 800 can do what the sonos controller can do with respect to hand-held visual song search, selection, cover art, etc (and of course speed). Re: [slim] Error Correction for iTunes
EAC + FLAC remains my top choice on Windows, and is the top choice of many people on these forums. Max + FLAC on the Mac is pretty good too - I've never had any problems with it. FLAC is a good choice for format. It will play natively on the Squeezebox and Sonos (seeing that you are contemplating taking the plunge on both). I also continue to use iTunes - my FLAC library is served by Firefly server in addition to Slimserver. The FLACs show up as a DAAP/Bonjour share in iTunes (Win Mac), and are transcoded in real time to wav - so no loss of information. Tags are also preserved. Files can be played locally, or through Airport Express (and I guess through AppleTV as well). You can't burn CDs or create playlists from shared music though. For burning you can use Roxio Toast, and playlists can be created in Firefly. I see this as a stop gap solution. Rumours are that OS 10.5 Leopard will natively support FLAC, and I'm also hoping the XiphQT project will suport native FLAC decoding soon. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34897 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you are always on the internet, your external IP shouldn't change unless you need to release it from your DHCP server after an extended off period. [slim] OT: DVD ISO rips and Media Library
Sorry for the OT question, but I am quite sure that several members would have faced a similar query before: While my main focus has always been audio, over the past few years I have started building up a small collection of DVDs too. Not being sure of what the best format to rip them would be, I used DVD Shrink to create ISO images without additional compression. So now I have a bunch of ISOs which range from 3GB - 8GB. I know how to mount them and watch with any standard software DVD player, and also that they play directly with VLC (fine on the PC, variable on the mac), but is there a more elegant solution like Slimserver, that can directly create a library of ISOs and stream/transcode the, over a local network? If ISOs are not the best format, what are some other formats that can be used that won't further compress the vide files? Currenthill;187075 Wrote: suddenly I get some strange behavior. When using the remote control, every button works okay - but only for a total of 5-8 clicks. It doesn't care which button I pushes, I can skip songs by pressing forward 5-8 times, then it doesn't respond any more. Or I could press play/pause 5-8 times - then nothing. Very strange indeed. If I then wait like 2-3 minutes then I can push another 5-8 times before it locks up. During the 'lock-up' it does not affect the music I'm playing. So the device works perfectly using only the HTTP-GUI. But I Now that you mention it, I seem to have similar issues. I had assumed it was my remote batteries getting old, but I am quite sure its not that now. I never ever saw anything similar with version 6.1 running even on a puny 1st Gen Linkstation, nor with v 6.5 on my g4 mac mini but now i'm on 6.5.1 on windows and that might have something to do with it this seems particularly pronounced when i have really long playlists running for several hours. All of a sudden, the remote become unresponsive, including volume, but the music continues unaffected. I noticed that the Nokia770 skin also suffers some performance lags at this time, though not as pronounced as the remote. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33512 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Amazon's S3
andyg;186689 Wrote: S3 is great as an offsite backup, but if you are thinking of doing something like streaming music from it, you'll pay a fortune in bandwidth costs. There are other services designed for this such as mp3tunes. Perhaps Slimdevices/Logitech should consider offering something like this for music files as a optional paid service for their customers. SD customers could backup their files to SD servers, with the added advantage of being able to link it throught their SqueezeNetwork accounts for streaming that could scale according to available bandwidth. e.g. like mp3tunes but with a focus on backup for audiophiles. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33458 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Can u help?
I'm not really familiar with OTSDJ at all. From a cursory inspection of the website, it appears to be a software for automated DJing. While SlimServer / Squeezebox can be used to listen to your music collection over the internet - and most effectively at that, I very much doubt it is what you are looking for or need in this particular case. Perhaps you are mistaking this for Shoutcast? Shoutcast can interface with your DJ software and be configured to stream your output over the internet. Re: [slim] Can u help?
Hmmm ... OK, so u can have OTSDJ+Shoutcast at one end, and then setup a Squeezebox at the other end to receive the stream from this. You could probably use Squeezenetwork to set up your Shoutcast station as a favourite - so you won't need a computer running once the initial setup is done. There will also shortly be a solution using the SlingBox. Slingmedia are releasing a hardware device called SlingCatcher which will directly connect to your TV stereo so you can remotely watch without using a PC - but that is a few months away. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=3 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] SlimDevices Squeezebox 2/3 and Sonos ZP80
notanatheist;185323 Wrote: Interesting that you state the Sonos is better at multi-room sync. In what way is it better than the SB2/3? I have 3 SB units at home and regularly sync/unsync them. The only thing I can think of that could be considered a 'hiccup' is the current track restarts. Not enough to bother me though. Does the Sonos give you web control as well? Is the remote RF or WiFi? I find it convienant to be sitting at a computer and just pop up the web interface to make changes to the volume and playlist on the fly without searching for the remote. I certainly agree on the display issue though. It is nice to see what is actually playing on the screen and/or have other information at your fingertips like the date/time/weather, visualizations, track info, or custom text welcoming people. Not exactly something the Sonos can do. Squeezebox obviously gives you far more freedom to setup your device however you please and is not tied to any particular platform. I wrote the original post nearly a year ago, so some things have changed on both platforms since then. I do continue to use both platforms side by side in my home (because each has its set of benefits). I still have a personal preference for the SlimServer + Squeezebox platform though members of my family have the opposite preference. WRT multiroom syncing, people's experience with the SBs and TPs have been variable - for some people (like you) it seems to just work perfectly, while others seem to have no end of trouble - at least that was the impression I got at the time of the review. On the other hand with the Sonos I don't recall anyone ever having a problem - it always just works out of the box with minimal fuss or configuration. The controller, as most people have acknowledged, is probably the strongest selling point. The controller is WiFi. In addition to the WiFi controller, there is a Desktop controller for Mac and Win and an AJAX based Web COntrol that has been and continues to be developed by the user community. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23490 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Certainly it wont accept the H:/ form for the Music Folder in Server Settings (reports Oops - H:/music doesn't seem to be a valid directory. Try again.), I'm not sure about the mapped drive thing but one possible reason might be that you are using a '/' instead of a '\' ... so for Windows systems you should try 'H:\Music' or 'H:\\Music' (For some reason I can't remember which one is correct at the moment - though I'm leaning towards the first one) Edit: If you navigate to the folder containing the music in windows explorer, and if you have your path set to display in the address bar, you can simply copy and paste the path -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33228 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Maybe my real issue is that I'd be happy to keep all my music in iTunes except that right now its flac. The Slim server iTunes itegration works pretty well. Hmm. I will think about a migration from flac to aiff and use iTunes ot manage music and slim to serve it. Will you be happy if iTunes could just play back your flac files, or would u want it to edit tags, burn cds, etc, etc? If its the earlier, one option is to run the Firefly (mt-daapd) server side by side with slimserver. You can set firefly to transcode your flacs to wavs in realtime (so no loss and additionally iTunes catches all the tag info). Firefly server shows up as a shared iTunes library, and you should be able to send stuff to your Airport Express. This way your iTunes/Airport Express and Slimserver/Squeezebox setups can happily exist side by side. -- Nikhil Nikhil's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=993 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31879 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
