it is Internet Explorer i would suggest you try downloading FireFox and
trying that to see if that works.

 Works beautifully in this configuration.

in the above senario you must still have a Squeezenetwork account
(free)to connect to Rhapsody or Pandora. But just one other note on
these services, they seem to be going away for SB users out side of the
U.S.

But in the event you do own your music you could use the MP3Locker
service where you upload all you music the their server (secure from
others using it) and then just connect to that service via the
SqueezeNetwork.

It sounds like you are running SqueezeCenter as a user not as a
service.

I am not in front of my machine right now but but if you go to

I think that is what it is anyway you should be able to change
SqueezeCenter to run as a service and not have to be logged on.
That is how one of mine runs

Further, the laptop sees the players when in SqueezeNetwork, just not
 SqueezeCenter.

Are you saying that your main XP computer runs SC7 or SS6.5.x.

If you are saying that then the SB's just need to see it and it needs
to be on anytime you want to listen to your local music (not
SqueezeNetwork).

Then just point your browser of your laptop at
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:9000/
Where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address of your main XP machine.

In the event that your main XP machine only has the music attached to
it and you are running SC7 or SS6.5.x on the lap top your best bet
would be to load SC onthe main XP machine and leave that running all
the time so you can get to your local music from that machine or from
your laptop as described above.

This could be done with animated .gif files if they were supported,
although not the best solution but probably a lot easier.

such as that Grateful Dead concert from 1972, that Dylan bootleg from
1987 or a live show downloaded from archive.org?

I have found that if you search the net then you can find many others
who have already made cover art for many of the Grateful Dead live
shows. As for the Dylan bootleg or other live shows, as has been stated
make your own art that will make you remember being there if you were,
as I was.

Also i find the cover art will bring back memories that can and do not
come back just from the artist name or track title.

But then again if you do not like the cover art then just remove it and
then there is no problem.

Now to my question of should I be the one reviewing this? - my point
is that clearly I, as mere customer/user, have no idea of whatever
changes SD has done to SC7 to invalidate those or other docs. So I
*can't* review the changes. They must be reviewed by somebody else
(probably internal to SD) who knows the exact specifics of the software
changes and who can properly reflect on the necessary changes to the
 docs. I don't know what they've changed!

All I can point out (and did) was some parts of the doc after Michaels
edit which had to be still wrong given the tidbit comments that Michael
 had given here.

Then go back and use the SS6.5.X where the documentation is probably
more correct.

As I and many others have stated on the matter of SC7 it is in BETA so
there will be issues of things being incorrect and that is why it is
BETA.

  Schatzy, thanks for your comments.

I'm sorry for being completely off topic. But phrases like this always

make me smile. I don't know why schatzy is using this name here in
 the
forums. But in German it means sweetie... :-)

Michael - It is a nick name given to me by those in my grade school who
could not pronounce my last name, Schatzlein (little Sweetheart in
german). I have had this nick name for more than 35 years now.

As for being sweet i can be bu t for someone to complain about having a
problem with SC7 which is in Beta and then continue on about it after
ahving it explained why it is incorrect is not very nice. If they want
to use a Beta version they must be willing to accept the fact that
there will be mistakes in it and as for dcoumentation I find that SD
has some of the best and most comprehensive around. So okay the
documentation in this case was incorrect but you all are wokring very
hard on getting the program to work as it should and the documentation
will get corrected later. Simple.

Oh and take a look at the iTunes documentation it is about 3-4
revisions behind and they have a lot more resources for getting it
correct than SD

Do you have a mapped drive letter for your NAS?

Also the cover art files should be named cover.jpg or folder.jpg for a
standard install.

If you have all your cover art named say x.jpg then you can open
the file AlbumCatalogCreator-V1.hta with note pad or some other text
editor and add your cover art name to the list. It should be on line
#78. There you will find a line looking like this

sCoverFilename= cover.jpg,folder.jpg

Just add your cover art name in the list like so

sCoverFilename= cover.jpg,folder.jpg,x.jpg

To answer your question - Yes. We all should.

Just remember one thing this is NOT the final release. The great hard
working people at Slim Devices have put the software out as a Beta so
that those of us who wish to use it can. But as a Beta user you must be
willing to realize that there will be issues that need attention. The
people at Slim Devices can not know EVERY possible configuration that
might be out there in the real world. They also have been working very
very hard on making the important changes to the software to make
functionality better and more to what the users are asking for.

From these forums you can see that many the user population have not
read the users guide or looked at the Help files.

Through all of this the people at Slim Devices take all kinds of
criticism and may times say Thank You for letting them know our
opinions.

So If the errors get out in the then maybe there is a reason to
complain. But also remember that most software and equipment no longer
come with any kind of useful instructions and in many cases if it does
it is outdated by Years not just a month or so.

I personally think the people at Slim Devices are doing a fantastic job
and should be applauded for their work.

if put in IE or Firefox they will open Windows Media player. Media
player then shows them as Windows Media Audio 9 32 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo
1-pass CBR.

I thought Squeeze Network was supposed to be able to play Windows Media
files but maybe not.

May be there is someone else more in the know that can help on this

You some time must add the %20 manually for the space between the words
Streaming Links

Once the %20 is added then it works. I have found this on a few radio

need the space spelled out in characters.

Also a number of people here have found that they need to install SC7

No it is not Typical to have to rest or unplug a squeeze box daily or
even monthly. I have two that have been running for more than 9 months
with out even a hint of a problem.

You may want to check you wall voltage (120/240) as a high or low
voltage can cause all kinds of odd problems with electronics equipment.
I.E. at the place i work the correct voltage should be 115/120 nominal
but it continually runs high at about 128-130. This causes havoc with
any computer related device. We have had to go to running UPS systems
all all desktops to reduce the voltage to a more normal range.

How long are your IP Leases from your DHCP server, a week , a day, a
few hours?. This could be causing a problem. I would suggest setting
your server and your SB3 with static IP addresses and see what
happens.

Are you 100% positive that it is SqueezeCenter that is causing the
drive to spin up. I would shut SqueezeCenter down by (ensure that it is
not running by checking task manager) and then let it sit for few hours
and see if the drive spins up. If it does then it is not SqueezeCenter
that is causing it.

I know on my system (windows xp pro sp2) with out SqueezeCenter the

windows that is refreshing its connection list that causes this.

I did some extensive testing last night by setting up a few albums for
AC/DC, AC\DC, for the ACDC, AC DC problem you are having.

What I found was that no matter what I did it would always Come out as
AC/DC. It did not matter which way the /\ went or if it had a space
before or after it always got changed to /.

So this morning I powered up a system from at work that runs a Spanish
(sold in Spain) version of Windows XP Pro SP2 and made up some albums
and then transfered them to a English (Sold in the US) version of
Windows XP Pro SP2 and ran some tests. What i got was very
inconsistent. Most of the time it would come out as ACDC but
occasionaly it would come out as AC DC. It seems to me to be a
difference in the language settings for characters.

You had stated that you downloaded some of the tagging from Amazon.
Could it be that some of the AC/DC tags came from Amazon.

I would suggest opening each album with your tagging software. Bulk
remove or change the artist tag to something completely different. Save
this Close the tagging software. Reopen the tagging software and that
album and and bulk change the artist tag to AC/DC. Remember that you
will have to do a complete clear and rescan with SC/SS and the rerun
ACC.

If this does not fix the problem then PM me and we can work off line of
the forum to get this sorted out for you.

I think it is part or their lets make windows faster for the user

Also wondering why you have the spin down time set so long (2 hours).
One note for you though if you set the screen saver for five minutes
and the drive spin down for 5 minutes the screen saver will cause
activity on the hard drive and thus reset the hard drive timer for
another 5 minutes. There are also many other things that can cause disk
activity such as network traffic, anti virus software looking for
updates, other programs looking for updates, instant messengers
refreshing their connected lists etc. so you may want to check for some
of these types of things as well. For instance when I access Outlook on
my work computer it causes all the drive to spin up. Why it has to spin
all of them up and not just the operating system one with the program
and data on it i do not know.

If you do not then there seems to be something wrong with the driver.

Also mi seems many people are complaining about the computer waking all

Re: [slim] TinyAmp S30 amplifier the perfect companion Squeezebox ?

2008-01-22 Thread schatzy

Another smallish amp would be the Russound R235LS. Like the Parasound
Z-Amp and the Audiosource Amp 100 it is designed for lower wattages (35
per channel) but has audio sensing for auto turn on. The Russound is
larger than the Parasound but smaller than the Audiosource.

I use on of these in my kitchen with a wall mounted SB3 and ceiling
mounted speakers. It has enough power to drive you out of the room.

But then again all of these amps are designed more for the background
music people play when friends are over or during parties etc.

If you want something small with 100 watts you probably won't find
small unless you go to a car (automobile) amp but then the power supply
to drive it will not be small so that defeats the purpose.

Re: [slim] WFMT Chicago URL

2008-01-20 Thread schatzy

As a station owned by Window to the World Communications, who by the way
gets large grants from The corporation for Public Broadcasting, in my
eyes is a public radio station.

Also they ask for money from people to pay for their programing so that
also puts them in the category of public radio.

Also straight from their web site i see that they have exactly the same
member rates as my local public radio stations, also being fully tax
deductible which if someone was giving to a commercial radio they would
not be able to do.

See http://www.wfmt.com/main.taf?p=3,3

In fact all of their member programs are exactly the same as those of
my local and other public radio stations.

So conclusion from all this data is that they are a public radio
station.

1. Right click on My Computer

2. Click on Map Network Drive...

3. Pick drive letter that you want to use.

4. Browse (using browse button) to the folder on your network attached
storage that has your music on it. You can not select the root folder
as this will not create a proper mapping.

5. Click finish.

Test your mapping by opening my computer and clicking on the drive
letter you selected it should bring up a the contents of the folder
that you mapped to.

I did this with two different NAS boxes One Link Station and one
Infrant. Both worked properly if the mapping was done as stated above.

If yo let the NAS Software select the drive letter or how it is to
connect to your computer it WILL NOT work.

Phil had a work around that i tried and it worked as well but was much
more work to get it working.

2008-01-19 Thread schatzy

Ralph 411,

I find it Extraordinarily Rude of a public radio station to force you
to sign up and give them all the information that they require.

I currently support 3 public radio stations in my local area of Boston
MA and none of they would even think of asking a listener to subscribe
in the manner that WFMT is doing. Yes they have a short 10 second
message when you first connect to the stream about making a
contribution but that is deffinately not a requirement to listen to
their station, nor ANY other PUBLIC RADIO STATION. That is why they are
called PUBLIC RADIO.

My only suggestion for you is to contact the station and make a
complaint about this.

If they can not give you a link that does not require the login
information then ask them where you need to put in the login info so
that you can listen to the stream I.E.

It seems that your upload speed very low. Also if you add 192 + 192 =
384 + overhead is getting very close to the upload speed. If you can
try an experiment (it may sound lousy) by dropping your bit rates to
92kpbs for a day or two to see what happens. if this clears the problem
up then it is the upload speed that is causing your problem.

If this test doe not help, as Siduhe said there may be something
running your wifes computer that is interfering with the stream such as
Anitvirus or Antispyware software. Another posiblity is that there is a
back network card of cable connecting here computer to the network.

Many thanks!. I believe the CPU should be fine (2.8 dual core, 2 gigs
ram, 2 TB RAID 0+1) as it is fairly stout and dedicated. ...
Checked it, with 2 streams and the SB3 running my computer CPU usage is
 3% with 364meg of 2 gig used.

As you had stated in an earlier post your processor and its usage
should not be a problem.

Re: [slim] NAS benefits?

2008-01-17 Thread schatzy

NAS Devices are good for storing data but most of them are way under
powered for running thins like SS and SC. Just read through the threads
here, many people say they are under powerded.

For actually less money than a decent NAS i have a mini iTX computer
and a 500GB usb hard drive. The iTX is a 1Ghz processor with 1GB ram
and runs WIndows XP. I have 3 SB3's connected to it all running
different stream and no lag in the menu's on any of the SB3's. I think
I could probably run at least 2 more SB3's off of this with out any
problems.

Now if I was to have it run a version of Linux it would probably be
quicker.

This creates a totally silent system that draws only 17 watts when
fully running, and 9 watts in idle mode. I have never turned it off.
BTW most NAS have fans of some sort that make noise.

If I wanted to spend a little more money and add another 500GB USB
drive (which I may have to do soon) I would still have only spent about
50% of what it costs for an Infrant NAS with 1TB of storage. There are
other NAS out there that are cheaper but then you also have less
ability to play with its operating system.

I will admit it does draw a little more power but only about 25% more.
But still only about 1/10 of what a regular computer would draw
minimum.

If you already have an NAS and it is not power full enough or you can't
load SS or SC the a mini iTX is a good choice.

Scahtzy

Edit: BTW i can access the music or any other file on the USB drive
connected to the Mini iTX Computer from any other computer on my
network at any time I want.

Gibbo,

As for purchase and not knowing where you live, just do an internet
search for itx motherboards. The list will not be really long but look
for the best price as there are a few companies out there that have
very good rankings that will price gouge you. I.E. i saw one mini
system with 60GB HD and CD drive for 779.00 and the exact same system
somewhere else for 499.00. and that was one of the more expensive ones.

As long as the processor is 1Ghz or better with at least 1GB of memory
you should be all set to run Windows XP Pro SP2. Thats what I run. As
for Vista or XP Media Center They may tax it a bit.

I bought this one as a bare bones kit as it had the best price at the
time and i have all sorts of extra drive and memory hanging around. The
only thing was that i had to make a drive bracket for it.
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/store/Mini_ITX_Systems/Mini_ITX_BareBones_Computer

Also i run the most basic of Windows XP Pro install. I left out all the
extras that they want you to install. I would have to check this evening
what i did install so i could run it headless and access it through
Remote Desktop.

2008-01-16 Thread schatzy

tamanaco,

You should find the configuration file in the acc-v1-RC2 folder that is
crated on unzipping the downloaded file.

If you are not seeing it is may be hidden by windows.
1. open the folder with ACC in it.
2. click on tools (in the tool bar at the top)
3. click on folder options
4. click on the view tab
5. under the hidden file and folders click on show hidden fies and
folders
6. also uncheck hide extensions for known file type and
7. click OK.

at this point you should see a file called ACC.cfg

If you still do not see it then open note pad and type in the
following

SF|
G2E|
CF|

Save the file as ACC.cfg in the folder with the acc program.

if it saves it with a .txt at the end the rename the file ACC.cfg and
try ACC again.

IE will always try to access the internet every time it is opened,

You could manually set it to not access the internet but then when you
wanted to use it for the internet you would have to manually tell it to

IE is normal set to try and connect to the internet normally. This can
be changed (work off line mode)but then every time you go to use it to
connect to the internet you would have to manually tell it to connect
(on line mode). In fact all browsers work this way.

So when ACC opens IE to display, IE thinks it should try and connect to
the internet to get ready for your request of a web page. But ACC is
telling it what to display so it displays the ACC generated page and is
then reday for yout to type in a web address or choose from favorites
etc.

Unfortunately by turning off the PC you have nothing for the Squeezebox

This is standard operation. As maggior stated Scroll through and you

Your other 2 options are

Sometimes it takes a little while (sometimes as much as a day or more)

I would presume it is a bandwidth issue (using a 5Mbps cable connection)
 on the upstream, but,,

Most cable internet connections have a slower speed of upload than they
do of download. Like my cable connection at my house has a download
speed of up to 15MB sec (usually runs about 12MB) while the upload
speed is only 768KB (usually runs around 680KB).

You can check this at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

Click on one of the cities nearest you and when it has finished it will
give you two numbers one is the download speed the second is the upload

If your upload speed is less than 800KB you may have a problem,

I know in my neighborhood when school lets out and all the children
arrive home the upload and download speeds go down dramatically. This
is caused by the amount of traffic on the system. The more traffic the
slower everyone gets.

Also what is the streaming bit rate?

I have tried to stream 360kbs tracks and it does not work well even on
the 768 upload because of the overhead data that is required.

So check your speeds and answer a couple other questions and i will try
to help you try to get this sorted out.

Speed Upload?
Speed Download?
Time of day it is the worst?
bit rate of your tracks?

Also have you though of upgrading to SC7 rather than SS6.?

Re: [slim] help me design audio in my house

2008-01-16 Thread schatzy

grego.speiser,

One thing you might want to check into is an amp by Russound,
specifically the R235LS. It has line level inputs so that you can run
the SB outputs right into it and then not have to have the tuner/amp on
if you are still going to have one. and If you must have a tuner/amp
then it will also accept speaker level inputs to pass the amp signal
through to the speakers. BTW the amp turns itself on when audio is
present at the audio inputs and then has a delay circuit to turn the
amp off after a specified period of time after the audio input has
stopped.

I have set up my kitchen with and inwall SB3 (custom mounting plate)
and mounted the amp to the ceiling in the basement. I have a Mini iTX
computer running SS in my main stereo rack. In my case i did not have a
wall to put the speakers in so they went in the ceiling. Before the
remodel the speakers had been in the wall, mounted about 6 feet(2
meters) off the floor. The sound is only slightly more directional with
them mounted in the ceiling. But then again what do you do in the
kitchen? Work. With the other sounds that are in the room when you
are in there this is basically background music.

Question. Does the opening from the kitchen to the dining room go all
the way to the ceiling. If not you would be better off putting the
speakers in the wall above the opening as opposed to in the bulk head.
The reason for this is that the in-wall speakers are designed for a
relatively small cavity. If mounted in the bulkhead there would be a
very large cavity and they may not sound so good.

All the other posts here also have some very good suggestions as well.
Just make sure you over wire the house now because it is very difficult
to run wires later. Oh one thing you might want to think about is
putting in some sort of a chase or pipe fromteh basement to the attic
space as if there ever is the need to put extra wiring in then that is
the easiest way to get it to the second floor.

If you need any other help on placement of items feel free to ask.

tamanaco,

The issue with the resizing the windows of ACC is due to your font size
selection in Windows.

I have been able to recreate this on my computer and would like you to
check something.

1.right click anywhere on your desktop where there is not an icon

2. Click properties

3. Click the settings tab

4. Click the advanced button

5. Click the General tab if it is not showing

Under DPI setting what is the setting
Normal (96dpi), Large (120dpi) or Custom.

I believe that you will find that it is set to Large or Custom. Setting
mine to large causes the same problem.

IF that is the case and you need it set to large or custom for some
reason then let me know and i will make you a special background and
then have you change the window size in the ACC.hta file to accommodate
this font size setting.

If this is not the case then i will have to look into it further. But
from the pictures you posted i think this will be the situation.

Secret Squirrel,

So what you are saying is that it actually opened in FireFox but you
still got a Zone Alarm message for IE.

This is probably caused by the fact that ACC uses a function of
IE/Outlook/Office that is designed for saving web pages and then
viewing them off line.

If this is the case can you live with the Zone alarm message be cause
we will not be able to stop it happening without a change in Zone

Save this and try running ACC-RC2.

If the path that we removed does not exist on your computer then this

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-14 Thread schatzy

For those of you having problems with displaying ACC results in
FireFox.

FireFox does not have native support for .MHT files. These are
proprietary to Microsoft applications.

There was a MAF Extension written for FireFox 1.5 that would allow .MHT
files to be opened in FIreFox 1.5, but it has not been updated for the
changes to newer version of FireFox.

As for the .html files. fire fox does not recognize the format of the
link to the cover.jpg. It is currently formatted as
C:/folder/folder.cover.jpg

For FireFox to be able to see it is must be
file:///C:/folder/folder/cover.jpg

The unfortunate this with this is that IE7 will disregard the
file:/// and display the cover.jpg file properly but if you are using
an older version of IE such as 6.0.5 then you may have problems with the
cover.jpg file showing. Some country specific versions of 6.0.5 (Spanish
version) did not allow the file:/// to be disregarded and will error
out if it is in the path to the file.

Hopefully SliverRS8 can come up with some alternate way of coding these
path to the cover.jpg file but it may not be possible.

Frank,

The real problem I beleive with IE6 more along the lines of

A. if the file was produced by IE6 then no problem
B. If file produce by another application the it must be in a very
specific path structure.
C. For unknown reasons it also has to do with the version of MS Office
or Word.

I have read reports that If you have Office 2003 installed it works
fine with IE6. And then there are others that have reported problems
with Outlook Express having to be reinstalled to make it work with
IE6.

My feeling is that those who have not upgraded to IE7 have much older
computers where IE7 just does wont work. Also IE7 does not work on
anything other than XP SP2 or Vista, or so Microsoft says, i have not
tried it myself.

Anyone running Windows 2000 or 98SE will probably have a problem,
Although I have heard that you can view any .mht files on Win2k or 98SE
if you install the latest Outlook Express even if you don't use it.

But that's just the way Microsoft products are. Designed to be a PITA.

Re: [slim] Down to the wire between SB Duet vs. Sonos

2008-01-09 Thread schatzy

RK1313

As you say i do not want to call you a lier so here is what Sonos has
to say about the track limits.

Version 1.0 - 30,000
Version 1.1 - 30,000
Version 1.2 - 40,000
Version 1.3 - 40,000
Version 2.0 - 50,000
Version 2.1 - 50,000

So yes they can get UPTO 50,000 tracks but then they temper that with:

The current limit is 50,000 tracks or filled RAM in the ZonePlayers --
whichever comes first. Long file names, track names, playlists, and
composers use more RAM.

If you can simplify your file names, you'll be able to squeeze in a few
more tracks. Classical track names can be very long and ripping programs
tend to throw the whole track name into the file name. By simplifying
the track names, you'll free up more index space.

Finally, you may have some seasonal music (Christmas, Easter, etc.)
that does not need to be linked into the library all year. If you move
each season's music into a separate share, only the currently linked
shares will dig into the 50K limit.

Also by reading through the forums many people are stating that they
have hit the Memory limit with only 35,000 to 38,000 tracks and have
minimal tagging as it is. To remove more tags looses searching
capabilities and having to reduce the file name length should just not
have to be done. There is enough to do just adding music to your system
with out having to worry about the file name length.

I surely know that I do not want to have to re-index my collection
every time I want to listen to a to seasonal music. That requires that
I split my music up and put it on different shares or folders. I just
want to keep my collection in one place and have the ability to listen
to Christmas Music in July if I want to.

tamanaco,

Are you using SC7 or SS 6.5.4?

I have many albums with 10 tracks and they seem to work fine.

I have found that there are many differences in the way SC7 and SC work
with special characters including the . if your track numbers have any
inconsistency especially if there happens to be a rouge space in there
somewhere then it seems to throw off a lot of other listings even from
other albums.

I have a few files (30-40) that are giving me problems and i am doing
some very extensive testing before attempting to do write a bug report.
And i also see that some of the problems i have been having have been
fixed in the latest nightly any way.

As Phil and Frank suggested maybe a good look at the tags and a rescan
will help you out.

I have also noticed that with the latest nightly i need to actually
shut off my computer and start it back up to make some of the changes
work correctly. Don't understand that part but that is just how
computers can be sometimes.

I will post more of my findings in the next few days.

Re: [slim] Down to the wire between SB Duet vs. Sonos

2008-01-08 Thread schatzy

Blorty,

Not sure what size your music collection is but be ware the Sonos can
only handle less than 25,000 tracks. In fact even getting close to that
say 23,500 tracks makes the Sonos database slow down to a crawl. Thus if
you are using 5-6 rooms at one time and there is more than one track
playing at a time you will be in trouble. Also i spoke with Sonos just
a few months ago and they told me that There is no plan to increase
the capacity for there database, and who has that much music anyway.
Direct quote. Well that are many people that have that much or more
music. My music collection is over 57,000 tracks, and I have heard of
other people here on this forum with collections over 80,000 tracks
that do not have a problem.

I currently have 3 SB3's all running different music at one time off of
a Mini iTX board with a Via C7 Processor @ 1GHz and 1 GB RAM. The
processor only runs at about 17% this way so there is more than enough
room to expand and have more SB's running with different music.

As for Kluggy with and extra amp, i have heard the Sonos amps and
although they sound OK you could get a much better sounding amp for the
difference between the Sonos and the Squeeze Box Receiver. And really
you only need one Remote unless you are going to be continuously
playing different music in all rooms at the same time.

Now look at the costs:

Sonos / Slim Devices
Controller $399.00 / Controller $299.00
Zone Player 80 $349.00 / SB Reciever $149.00
Zone player 100 $499.00 / SB 3 $299.00

Amplifier you have $200 or more for each zone to play with from the
difference in cost.

Music StorageYou already have it up and running if you already have
a SB3

Oh by the way that is one less you have to buy for a room, so use that
money for some other treat you might like to have.

To me it's a no brainer. But that is just my 2 cents.

I can't wait to get my hands on a Duet.

meep,

Sounds like a great set up.

I use a Russound R235LS amp which draws less than one watt when the
audio inputs are not feed from the SB. Then when the SB is putting out
audio the amp turns on immediately and stays on for 10 minutes after
the last note so that if you have a break in the music like for track
changes or some other reason the amp is not turning on and off all the
time.

These Russound amps can also take a second speaker level for a pass

tamanaco,

I suspect you are using some form of windows operating system, Which
one?

If i have read your earlier posts correctly the you are using a period
. between the track number and the title. Is this correct?

If it is that would be very un-standard as that causes all operating
systems to think harder about the file name. All operating systems
expect filename.xxx or filename. . By putting in that extra .
(01.filename.xxx) some systems will get very confused and others will
just get past it, although slowly.

every tagger i have ever tried either used dashes or underscores set up
as standard (01-filename.xxx or 01_filename.xxx)

As for changing all of your tags that is probably not necessary, but
there may be a rouge one out there the is causing some of the problems
seen by ACC-RC1. Frank is working on this with all the testing I am
doing for him. Hopefully it gets figured out in the next few days.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-07 Thread schatzy

SilverRS8,

Thanks for all the great work over the week end on this.

Phil, Siduhe,

Thanks for all the work you guys have done also.

THE I feel should be user selection for the artist not the Album
title. But then again what about THE THE. As Phil has stated it will
always be a problem. I had forgotten about them and now i am curious
how SS 6.5 and SC7 handle it, have not listened to them lately.

As for the Year in the Title. I have always sorted by albums/CD's/Tapes
alphabetically but all my MP3's/FLAC's are by year in the album folder
name c:\\mp3\artist\(1997)Album Title. Not sure why I did it that
way. But it does make it easier to follow the artist by musical
progression. Mya be it should also be a selection. Although to many
selections may make it overwhelming for some people.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-03 Thread schatzy

Thanks for this great utility. I love it.

I have found one thing though that may need to be looked into. I am
describing it here for others to try and see if they come up with the
same issue.

Background:

1) two computer running windows XP SP2 latest updates

2) computer one runs SS 6.5 latest release, computer two runs SC7
Latest nightly

3) same issue shows up on both systems using same set of mp3 files

4) file layout is MP3\letter\artist\album (e:\mp3\B\Boston\Don't Look
Back)

Test procedure:

1. run SS 6.5 and SC7 clear and rescan on same data files set. (Both
computers are linked to same NAS).

2. run Album Catalog Creator

3. select only one artist by using start folder option. (E:\A\Alice in
Chains). I know that there are 5 albums with a total of 57 tracks in
this folder.

4. Press start after 15 seconds two windows pop open as follows:

First window: (dialog box)
Album Catalog Creator is finished - states the following:
Total number of tracks processed: 57
total number of albums processed: 3

Second window: (IE Window)
Display shows 4 albums with 42 tracks

5. last album in alphabetical order is not shown. I have tried this on
many different artists folders and on both computers. I even went as
far as changing the name of one of the albums (in the mp3 tags) to
force it to show up before some of the others alphabetically and it is
always the last album alphabetically that does not show up.

Has any one else seen this issue.

P.S. it also happened when i did a full Album Catalog Creation on my
full MP3 set of files (58281 tracks by 3481 artists and 7957 albums).

By the way when i printed the list to a PDF file it come up with 889
pages when displaying album art and track titles and 140 pages when
done as a short list without covers or track titles.

Other that this one issue i have not found any other problems with the
operation of this utility. It works great.

Thanks for your great work and time to do this

Re: [slim] Each new version of slimserver seems worse...

2007-11-20 Thread schatzy

gdg,

Maybe you should apologize to the very nice folks here. You and a few
others are the ones that make this forum unbearable to read at times.

Also as a Senior Member of these forums you should know better than
to be so rude.

I have only had my Squeezebox for 3 months and even I know that they
are not designed to ORGANIZE the music, but be used as a device to
playback the music no matter how it is organized.

As to your question I have no problem deleting playlists using 6.5.4
so maybe you should go back to the drawing board and rephraze your
attitude and question and then just maybe I will post the answer to
your question.

Re: [slim] Dedicated PC - current thoughts on specs?

2007-11-07 Thread schatzy

I am running a small fanless VIA C7 1 Mhz processor and 1 gig of memory
on a mini itx board. Dead quite using a 2.5 laptop hard drive to run
windows XP and slimserver on.

All my music is on a 500GB My Book connected via USB.

Total cost of less than $500.00 US

Have run Inguz on this and it worked but ran the processor at about
80%, and it is something that i did not need in my listening room.

To access this machine i have set it to run headless and use windows
remote desk top to access it and control it if i need a web interface.
Works great.

The computer, my book and squeeze box only use a bout 18 watts of power
when running. This means that i can leave it on all the time and it is
ready for music listening at a moments notice.

My regular desktop machine uses about 95 watts at idle and when running
uses over 120 watts. This i do not want running all the time.

Just my 2 cents worth

Re: [slim] Starting server gives SB3 a stroke

2007-09-13 Thread schatzy

Yes you may think it is a small annoyance, but when you want to listen
to you music, having to wait is just not what you are wanting to do is
it.

It sounds like you have your PC and your SB set for DHCP (automatic ip
address assignment). If you were to set your computer to a static ip
address such as XXX.XXX.XXX.101 and then set your SB to a static ip
address such as XXX.XXX.XXX.102 then you should always be able to
connect to the pc running slimserver. Just make sure your router is set
to something like XXX.XXX.XXX.100. Or make the 100, 101, 102 - 000, 001
,002

Setting it up this way should allow you to leave the SB ON or OFF and
then turn on the pc and the SB should jsut see it when it has finished
coming on.

Re: [slim] Sonos/Squeezebox review on Toms Hardware

2007-08-30 Thread schatzy

Good article, BUT

It does not mention how many music files each can handle. I found out
the hard way that the Sono System software can not handle more than
about 40,000 files. Any more than that and the system will crash. I
even called Sono about it and they told me We do not plan to support
such large number of files. If you have that many how can you listen to
it all.

Well Sono I have over 56,000 currently with no duplicates (6 months of
checking proved that) and will be adding more and more on a regular
basis.

Slimserver should be able to handle any number of files. The only
inconvenience I have found is the time it takes to do a full scan. I
just let it run over night and all is fine.

The other factor i find very nice is the Squeezebox price is much
better.

Re: [slim] Scanner Trouble - Zero Artists

2007-08-15 Thread schatzy

fuzzyT,

Have you disable the MusicMagic plugin. I found that that caused all
kinds of problems if there was a problem character in a filename or tag
somewhere.

I went as far as to remove the plugin files to get it to work properly.

I proved this by reinstalling the plugin and doing a wipe and scan ,
again problems every time i ran a scan with the plugin there was a
problem every time i had the plugin removed it worked fine.

IF you are still having problems with the Artists ending up as 0 (zero)
at the end of a scan try removing the MusicMagic Plugin.

I found that i had to remove the folder to get it to work properly.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-08-01 Thread schatzy

After scanning for 8+ hours it shows no errors in the log file and has
completed properly. It now shows 7686 Albums, 54884 Songs and 3356
Artists. These number seem to be correct as they arethe same as both
the windows boxes show.

I have turned back on some of the plugins and it is working just as it
should

Thanks for all your help.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-31 Thread schatzy

Michael

Thank you for all your help.

After turning off all plugins, not removing them there was no change in
the final outcome. Still on the last scan to get the last few (200-300)
songs loaded it came back with zero artists.

I will delete the plugin folders that i do not need. I can always add
them back later. and do another dump of the database and scan from
fresh.

One other question that maybe you can answer for me is how can i get
sda2 and sdb1 to automount. I have tried a few things in the etc/fstab
file but they do not seem to work. when i restart the computer all the
changes i made to the etc/fstab file are gone.
Being a newbie to linux there is probably something i am missing.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-31 Thread schatzy

I have turned on d_scan, d_info and d_file and after 20 minutes of
scanning only have 12 lines of data in the log file.

I should have enough disk space as i am running a 4gig drive. If that
is not enough then i will have to figure something else out.

I expect that it will be another 5-6 hours before the scan is close to
finishing as it has taken that or longer to do them in the past.
but i will keep an eye on the log file.

On the sda2 and sdb1 being auto mounted do you have any sugestions on
how to keep the change persistent.

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-30 Thread schatzy

Thanks for the quick reply.

Are you using the latest SlimServer?

I had updated slimserver Just after i first downloaded slimcd a week
ago.

If you have playlists in your music folder, try moving them elsewhere.
Make sure they don't contain inexistent filepaths.

No Playlists

SlimCD comes with a lot of plugins preinstalled, which you probably
won't need at all. Do remove these plugins

By remove do you mean to erase the folders and files for them or just
turn them off in the server settings. The only plugins I will need are
IRBlaster (to turn on and off other equipment), Super Date Time (just
because i like the weather part), and the analog vu meters screen saver
(just because i am an old time audiophile). All other pluging are not
going to be used.

I will turn on debugging and see if that shows any abnormalities.

It will take a while to get thu another scan as the first scan usually
take 7-8 hours before returning results and my full time job gets in
the way of playing with this new equipment.

I will post my finding when i have them.

Thanks agian

Re: [slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-30 Thread schatzy

Just ran home from work and tried to delete or move the Custom Browse,
Custom Search and some other plugins and was not able to do so.

I am new to linux but i tried to delete from Midnight Commander and
also thru a shell window via sudo rmdir CustomBrowse it kept coming
back that it could not do it because they are read only.

Is there another command that i need to use.

So i disabled all and i mean all of the plugins in the slimserver
settings menu.

Question about some of the plugins you stated to leave such as iTunes,
MusicMagic, CLI. I can understand the CLI but I don't and will not use
iTunes because it will never be installed on this machine. And as for
MusicMagic, i do not use any type of rating system and really do not
care about rating systems as i like all types of music. Is there a real
reason to leave these there if they are only taking up resources? Does
it really impact the way slimserver works?

[slim] slimcd not handling scan well

2007-07-29 Thread schatzy

After scanning results are not correct.

I have installed slimcd to a 4Gb USB Pen Drive and have it attached it
a Nano ITX box configured as follows:

Via 1Ghz Processor
1 Gig RAM
1 Gig CF Drive Card as hda1(not normally mounted)
4 Gig USB Pen Drive as sda1/sda2 (slimcd on sda1/ backup files on
sda2)
500 Gig western Digital MyBook (FAT32)(music files)

The problem i am having is that this system does not come up with the
correct number of songs, artists or albums.

The scan stops after a couple of hours and registers:
6076 Albums - 41817 Songs - 2943 Artists
After Rescan look for new or changed files (2-3 Hours)
7153 Albums - 44354 Songs - 3262 Artists
After Rescan look for new or changed files (another 2-3 Hours)
7508 Albums - 49005 Songs - 3318 Artists
After Rescan look for new or changed files (another 2-3 Hours)
7531 Albums - 49643 Songs - 3322 Artists
After Rescan look for new or changed files (another 2-3 Hours)
7641 Albums - 51059 Songs - 3617 Artists
After Rescan look for new or changed files (another 2-3 Hours)
7698 Albums - 54884 Songs - 0 Artists

I have run this same scan/rescan 3 times over the past weeks to try and
get it to wokr properly with no luck. Every time it hits the final scan
and ends up with 54884 Songs it looses all the artists.

I know that the final number of songs should be 54884 because that is
how many MP#3 files there are on the MyBook. I know this as i have
connceted it to 3 windows machines and searched the drive for mp3 fiels
and each time it results in 54884mp3 files.

I have also set up slimserver on two windows machines and run scans.
each scan came up with the same number of songs (54884)and 7698 Albums
/ 3367 Artists. One windows system ran the scan twice all the way thru
with out stopping the other windows system stopped three time and
needed a rescan look for new or changed music but completed with the
same numbers

On the slimcd box the one time i did a rescan after the correct number
of songs showed and the artists were zero (0) it added the songs
twice, once with out an artist and once with an artist.

I want to be able to run a version of Linux on my Nano ITX box because
it is fan less and thus noiseless. The MyBook drive is also very very
quiet.

If anyone can tell me or give me an idea of what is happening it would
be greatly appreciated.

Oh by the way no squeezesoft running or sqeezeboxes running during
scans just to be on the safe side.

Re: [slim] Bizzare - SB3 Switching itself on!

2007-06-10 Thread schatzy

Do you have a window where the sunlight comes in that is directly
shining on the SB3 or reflecting off of something?

I have found other devices in my equipment rack do this some times when
the coffee table (made of glass) does not have anything on it.

The sun comes thru the window and reflects off of the glass table top
directly at some of the components in my equipment rack.

Other items that can cause this effect are Plasma TV's, some of the
compact flouresent light bulbs, and also in my case the cat stepping on
more than one button of a remote control.

If none of these sound like they may be the cause i would suggest
putting black electrical tape over the display for a few days to see if
it still comes on. if it does come on then there is deffinately
something else going on. If it does not come on then there is an
external source causing the IR sensor to activate the SB3
