[EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Sad to hear of Donnie closing up shop. I'm sure we all appreciate the
service he has provided. Still, it is often easier to get parts for 30-40 year old
boatanchors than it is for the newer rigs.

In the course of rebuilding L4B and L7 power supplies, I have accumulated
enough stock of capacitors (higher capacity, smaller size than originals),
bleeders, diodes (higher current rating), diode boards, equalizing resistors for
diodes and capacitors, and external (silent) fans, for rebuilding 25 supplies.
I'm not likely to run out for some time so if some Drake enthusiasts have a
need for a "kit" of parts, please make it known either on the Drake reflector,
the Drake Technical Net, or the various swap nets. Hams helping hams is what it
is all about.

And if you have comments, suggestions, questions, etc. about the Drake Forum
at Hamvention 2008, please make them known.

Enjoy those Drakes!

[drakelist] IRC .82ohm 2W SPH resistor

2007-11-06 Thread MT

MT [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Wow,

I never had any idea how difficult it would be to replace this item.

I have called Mouser, Digi-Key, Newark, Future, Marsh, TTI, as well
as several local vendors. No one has this item. When Harbach told
me they didn't have any and couldn't find a source, I thought I could
just do some quick searching and find this item. Boy, was I wrong.

I called directly to IRC and spoke with their sales distributor. He
advised there are 200 pieces in the factor in Barbados but I would
need to order $50 worth of them through a vendor in WI and it will be
at least 2 - 3 weeks. This is the only promising lead so far.

I have been calling for two days and I'm not having any
success. It's not that I don't want to pay a minimum order fee, the
resistors don't exist at any of the places which have minimum orders.

I found a place called Oxygen Electronics. They have some, however
will not sell to the public.

I have about 5 hours into the project so now I am determined to find
a source for this item.

Re: [drakelist] IRC .82ohm 2W SPH resistor

2007-11-06 Thread k9sqg

The resistor serves as a fuse for the high voltage line going to the linear.?
It fails (opens) due to excessive current in the load, NOT problems in the
power supply itself.? Ideally, a resistor in this application should be
non-inductive, and flameproof, and have a rapid onset failure mode.

Hi,

Where is the resistor being used in the circuit?

Any idea why a 1 Ohm, 5% SPH resistor 66-SPH1R00JLF Mouser, would not work?

Re: [drakelist] IRC .82ohm 2W SPH resistor

2007-11-06 Thread Mike Bryce

the reason is not really clear..

but here goes

if there is a fault in one or both of the tubes, or a short circuit
someplace on the +2700 volt line

this resistor acts like a fuse and pops open.

the problem is that nasty 2700 volts!

as the resistor opens up, the voltage will simply jump over the now
carbonized resistor.

in fact, it would be more accurate to call it a high voltage fuse
instead of a resistor!

aside from the voltage it has to carry, it must be able to conduct
the necessary current as well.

that's why is a special critter... and very hard to come by.

perhaps I could purchase some from the one company via my heathkit
shop since they won't sell to anyone not in the trade??

And it's quite handy!

I have (ahem) tested this function on a 30L1 that I was working on last
year. It uses a cluster of 2W carbon comps as the HV fuse. Since I forgot
that the Collins has multiple spring loaded interlocks on the B+ when it's
out of the cabinet, I was able to fully appreciate the beauty of these
resistors . After the smoke cleared, I was able to see that the resistors
opened and perhaps saved the transformer from my stupidity!

Normal fuses ...the 3AG types, are not rated for HV, and may not clear
when overloaded with such HV. This arrangement is also a good surge
stopper

Mike -

The original resistor is a wirewound, flameproof resistor. It actually
vaporizes in the event of a short, or even a flashover in one of the
final tubes, clearing the short and protecting the power transformer.
There are real fuses for this high voltage, but they are hard to find
also, and quite expensive. Collins used one in the KWS-1, I believe the
part number is HVB-1. Its about six inches long.

The one ohm resistor suggested would probably work just fine, if it's
wirewound and flameproof. I believe the SPH resistors are the
recommended replacement for the BWH which is what the original resistor
was. The L-4B runs about 600 mA plate current so the max power
dissipated in the resistor would be 600 mW. I don't recall whether the
original resistor was a one or two watt, I believe two.

the problem is that nasty 2700 volts!

as the resistor opens up, the voltage will simply jump over the now
carbonized resistor.

fact, it would be more accurate to call it a high voltage fuse instead
of a resistor!

aside from the voltage it has to carry, it must be able to conduct the

[drakelist] .82 Ohm - THANKS!

Someone from the list has hooked me up, so thanks!

As for the reason I need one complete operator error. The
resistor did exactly what it was designed to do when people do
something stupid. I can vouch that they vaporize in a hurry :)

If someone wants to put together an order, I can get you the
information off the list. I don't think this source wants a
business/distributor, however there will be a minimum order and I
don't remember if $50 or $100. I spent a ridiculous amount of time
searching for this item in the last two days and all the info has
blended together.

Thanks for all the responses and offers to help.

I will keep everyone updated on the progress with the 80/160 output
issue. Just for clarification,; the .82 ohm resistor went pop as I
was putting the amp back together after adjusting the tuning
coils. The low output issue was in existence before I let the smoke
out of the resistor.

[drakelist] TR4

2007-11-06 Thread Gypsymt34
Hi all,
OK OK I give...my beat up TR4
All the tubes light upreceives fine...although will need a general
alignment.

When you go to tune up a TR4 by the book...It will not. No increase in
plate current.
Does not matter into a dummy load or on an antenna.
In any case all of the presets done...pg 19
First para; Go to Function Switch.x-cwsokadvance xmtr gain until
 bias goes up a tadsok
Peak RF tune no difference...on plate current ..plate control no
difference.

What am I missing..?

Only physical difference between it and the schematic I have is that my V4
mixer tube is a 6EJ7 rather than the 6HS6 that I have in my book. The print
on the chassis says this is correct.
Finals are 6GJ5's..

Suggestions of where to next

Carl, Check the filaments on the finals. They are all three in parallel and
drop the 12.6 volts to 6.3 for the remainder of the tubes. The wires to the
filaments are small and brittle. Measure the Bias voltage coming out of the
power supply- should be at least -65 and you should be able to reduce it to
zero. When you go to X-CW you should have 350 volts on the final screens and
when you go to ssb the voltage should go to 650 volts. Be Careful !!! Also the
sealed transmit /receive relays are known to go bad. If you need one you can
order from Mouser in Texas- the manufacturers part number is R10-EIY4-V2.5K.

The final filaments are in series with most of the receiver tube

The bias supply should be variable from approx -45 to -85V. The screens
should have approximately 250 VDC, current limited to less in X-CW. The
plate voltage is 650 VDC. IF these voltages are present, and the
cathodes are grounded through the 15 ohm cathode resistors, you should
be able to adjust the bias for the 0.1A idle current. The system is the
same as the T-4XC, just one more tube. Same rules.

I use Lee Lighting #172, which is an exact color match for the original
Drake film. It is only about half the thickness of the original, but the
color is identical.

Some have suggested the Roscolene #853 as being an exact match, but I
have never seen that one. I believe it is also the thinner material like
the Lee Lighting.

A 20 x 24 sheet was about $5 the last time I bought it. The trick is
finding a theatrical lighting supplier that will sell to an individual.
There was one in Atlanta, but the last time I tried to get a sheet, they

There was one in Atlanta, but the last time I tried to get a sheet, they
had gone out of business.

Check out local suppliers of “gels” for stage lighting. Maybe Ebay or
online suppliers as well. Some time ago, one of the list members had a
part number for the gel which was closest to the Drake original. I’d
like to know that also since I have a B-line that could use some
refreshing.

RE : [drakelist] Loose connector fries finals

2007-11-06 Thread Davy
The same thing can happen with the Hallicrafters HT-44. Luckily, I have added
a plate current meter to both of my Halli PS-150-120 power supplies, so I can
monitor the plate current. (For some unfathomable reason, Halli decided not to
put in a plate current meter on the PS-150-120, necessitating user mods if one
wants one!) The cinch connector only did this once in the past 30 years, and I
caught it within 5 seconds, cutting the power. Amazingly, no damage to the
finals!

I know this is off topic re Drake, but thought I would mention that this same
risk applies to other tube gear.

Did you know that if the cinch connector becomes loose on the back of
a T-4XC, the bias may become disconnected but the plate voltage can
remain? I learned that the hard way. The plates don't just glow red,
they become bright orange very quickly. When I saw that I hit the
switch on the power strip, not knowing what the problem was yet.
After that, the T-4XC would only put out about half power (which is
better than expected). Fortunately, I had a spare set of 6JB6's and
was back on the air with full power quickly. The frustrating part is
that I did the AC-4R upgrade to prevent such a problem. The lesson is
to check the cinch connector frequently.

Re: [drakelist] 4 line blue filters

2007-11-06 Thread W4AWM

Greetings all,

There is no mystery about this. All you need is $6.25 plus shipping and you
can buy your very own lifetime supply (21 X 24 inch sheet) of Lee Filters #172
which is also known as Lagoon Blue. Simply go towww.filmtools.comThere
is no minumum order and they sell to anyone. Orders are shipped the next day.

The usual disclaimers apply.

Now I have to blow off some steam: I subscribe to many reflectors. Every day
I see folks looking for stuff. Some appear to be asking for freebees and
others for difficult to find items. It appears that many are too lazy to do
some
very basic research to find what they are looking for and expect someone to do
the work for them. Why not let your fingers do the walking? Researching on
the web is certainly not brain surgery and you will be amazed what you will
find with virtually no effort!

I suppose now I will spend the next several days getting flamed and looking
at endless threads on the subject. I'm done.

John, W4AWM
