Re: [Dx4win] Dx4Win spot window

Ed,

Just go to Preferences, File, Packet1 tab and on the lower left is a box
that reads: Spots to Ignore. "None" should be displayed in the box below.
Click in the box displaying None and an arrow will appear. Click on the
arrow and three selections will appear: Ignore, Gray spots or Gray and
Black. Click on Gray and Black, then go up and click on File and then Save
Changes and Exit. This will eliminate all spots that you have previously
worked and confirmed.

How to populate the spot window with only countries that have not been
previously worked on the band/mode being spotted. Presently, I want & get
both NEW & NOT CONFIRMED spots FB, but my friend wants only NEW spots and I
cannot make that happen. No matter what I try, he still gets spots in the
spot window for countries he has worked before. BTW, I have the box
unchecked that says "alert worked before countries".

For example, 7Q7RU is spotted on 10 20 & 160 FT8 and my friend has worked
Malawi B4 on both 10 & 20 FT8, but not 160, so he would want to see the 160
spot in the spot window, but not the 10 & 20 ones.

Re: [Dx4win] Fwd: WSJT to DX4WIN

2019-10-15 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
Hi Ray,

Glad to hear that the first import worked for you. In the future when you add
more QSOs in WSJT-X, you just import the entire logfile the same way into
DX4WIN. As mentioned below, the default selection when handling dupes is that
any duplicated QSOs from prior imports will be ignored. So you can keep
importing the entire log file, and DX4WIN will ignore the prior QSOs and only
add the new QSOs. You do not have to apply a date filter. Keep importing the
entire logfile from WSJT-X. Just make sure when you get to the window that
asks how to handle dupes, you just accept the default which is “the prior
duplicate QSO will be ignored.” This is a very slick feature.

But we still need the UDP broadcast support so that each new QSO is
automatically imported into DX4WIN. Then we will not have to repeat this
manual import process over and over….

Hello dave, just to tell you that I thank you very much for your advice on
WSJTX and tell you that I already managed to do it, although there were only
225 QSOs, now I need to know how you separate in the WSJTX log what you already
passed to DX4WIN with the new thing you have to update. Is the .ADI FILE
deleted from the WSJTX? Or is there a better way to do it.

Hello Raymundo,

Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to import your logged QSOs from WSJT-X
into DX4WIN. We have asked Paul to consider adding UDP broadcast support to
DX4WIN, so that once a QSO is logged within WSJT-X it would also automatically
be logged in DX4WIN. But Paul has not responded to this request -- even though
most other logging programs already support UDP.

So now all you can do is manually import the logfile from WSJT-X into DX4WIN.
This is not as easy as it sounds because the WSJT-X logfile is hidden in an
obscure folder within Windows. I have shortened the search process by mapping
a drive in Windows to the folder within WSJT-X so that I can find the file
faster. But it is still not ideal. We need UDP support.

To manually import the log file from WSJT-X, go to File in DX4WIN, then
Import/Export, make sure ADIF is the file type selected, in the smaller window
select File again, Import and then go find the logfile for WSJT-X. Select the
logfile and either double click or click on Open. You will see a new window
for "Options for duplicate QSOs", and make sure "that Imported QSO is ignored"
is the one appearing in the drop down menu. You want DX4WIN to ignore all
duplicates as it imports the log from WSJT-X. Click OK and you are done.

I have over 6,500 FT8 QSOs and 1,300 FT4 QSOs in my log and they all have been
imported that way. The manual import of the logfile is very time consuming and
laborious, and can be a real problem when you are in the middle of a big
opening on 6 meters into EU. DX4WIN is an excellent logging problem except for
this one glaring weakness.

Now all you can do is manually import the WSJT-X logfile over and over and
over...

I hope this helps.

Dave, N4QS

Mark,

A couple of things to check:

1. In DX4WIN, preferences, packet2, make sure you have typed localhost:7300

2. In VE7CC, Configuration, Ports/Logging Programs, in the middle section,
make sure that you have checked the enable button for local host and that
you have selected Use Port 7300.

You might have to restart both programs.

I purchased a new PC last evening.

Everything appears to be working properly on the new PC, but I can't get the

I copied the config files over to the new PC, I installed VE7CC software.

In the packet window of DX4WIN, I select LOCAL HOST 7300 for connection, but
nothing happens. No errors, nada.

When I click on SH/DX in the packet window, it says "no connection active"

I can connect to other named packet sources in DX4WIN on the new computer,
just not LOCALHOST/7300.

Am I missing a setting in DX4WIN or VE7CC?

Use the short cut keys. When you have a call in the callsign box in the QSO
window, you can just press F11 and DX4WIN will turn your rotator to the
correct heading. For long path, just press Control F11.

I've now got it "working". Is the rotator supposed to follow the spot when I
double click it like the radio does? If I drop down the rotator menu and
click on short, or long, path it rotates.

Re: [Dx4win] Import of ADIF "Comment" field - answered

Paul,
This used to bother me. I solved the problem by unchecking the "db reports
to comments" box under the Reporting tab in Settings within WSJT-X. By
doing that, nothing is saved to the comments field in the ADIF file and thus
nothing gets imported into the Call Sign Notes field in DX4WIN.

Len (K1NU) noted that when a WSJT log is imported into DX4WIN, DX4WIN puts
the contents of the field of the WSJT log into the DX4WIN
"Callsign Notes" field.

What is in the WSJT field is usually the mode and signal reports
such as "FT8 Sent: +01 Rcvd: +00". This is clearly QSO-related and not
Callsign-related information.

When I look at an ADIF specification, it says the field is a
Comment field for the QSO (not for the Callsign).

I do not know why WSJT decided to put the mode and signal reports in the
field because other fields already contain the mode and signal
reports. DX4win imports these mode and signal report fields into the proper
parts of the DX4WIN log.

The problem with importing the field into the DX4WIN Callsign
Notes is when you work a station multiple times. With each repeat QSO,
QSO-related info is appended to what is already in Callsign Notes. With many
QSOs, Callsign Notes gets pretty mucked-up with info that does not belong
there.

I would like to see DX4WIN make a change so that WSJT field is
put into DX4WIN Callsign Notes.

Fixed! It took a complete reinstall of 9.03 and then an update to 9.04. I
then loaded the config file from the previous install and when the windows
loaded -- there was the DX Spot window!

That only took about five hours to figure out! Despite battery backup, a long

but when I tried to start it last night everything blew up.

Seems to be all okay now. Back to working DX.

Re: [Dx4win] Lost the spot window

2018-06-12 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
Hi Paul,

I just tried closing the log. Only the radio frequency control window is left
open – and the top banner. And the packet window is minimized.

Nothing else is visible. I am using version 9.0.4.1176 and dual monitors.
When the log is open all other windows are displayed in the correct positions
across both monitors.

Dave,

When you close your log there will be fewer windows open; it may have been

Re: [Dx4win] Printing Labels in Sequence?

2018-03-03 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
Eric,

Click F8, type in station call sign, hit enter
All QSOs with that station will be displayed in logbook window
Click QSLs tab, Set QSL Label flag, follow prompts
Click Print QSL labels under same QSLs tab
Select the custom label that you would like to use
Uncheck most Print options (Group Names, Method Labels, etc.) I only use
Print Via Manager
Click on Edit and review format
Multiple QSOs should be showing in the preview
You can uncheck Commercial to free up more space for QSOs
Go back to main Print QSL labels pop up window
Click on Print, follow prompts
Labels should print

I can normally get up to 4 QSOs to print on one label.

Hope this helps.

Trying to work 3D2ER on 160M while I type this!

How do I do that?

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig

2018-02-20 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
John,

In my case, I am using RemoteRig boxes at both the remote and control sites. I
have a Static IP at the remote site and I forward two or three ports that the
two boxes use to communicate. I am not sure if I prioritized the port
connections in the routers at each end. Will have to check. No, I do not have
Wifi cameras and other equipment actively engaged at either end. No Wifi
mouses/keyboard. (I use Bluetooth.) Not sure what you mean by backhaul
distance. The remote site is about 10 miles from my home (control site).
Latency is normally not an issue. I regularly operate major contests with full
control of the remote K3 and all accessories. Audio streaming is normally
excellent.

Interesting problem. Are either of you using a Static or Dynamic IP? Also,
have you prioritized this port connection in your router? Is there other
router activity going on in your home like WiFi cameras, IP phones and WiFi
mouse/keyboard and such? What is the back haul distance between remote and ham
equipment

Re: [Dx4win] DX4Win - Elecraft K3 - Remote Rig

2018-02-20 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
John and Kostas,

I also have a K3/0 mini and I am glad to hear this problem happens to other
users. (No, not really!) My case is a little different. I never have a
problem with DX4WIN at the control site losing connection to the K3 at the
remote site. Stays connected -- rock solid for hours on end. I think I set
the poll rate at only 2000 ms and set max tries to 3.

My problem is with N1MM+. It loses connection quite frequently -- about once
or twice an hour on a good day. That will typically throw me out of run mode
and I must right click on the band map to Reset Radios. I figured that N1MM+
is somehow polling the radio differently than DX4WIN. There is a setting to
slow the polling 50% and 100% versus normal, but the same thing happens on all
three settings. N1MM+ does not have a way to increase Max Tries -- so that may
be the problem. I have recently sent my issue to the N1MM+ reflector with no
response.

Another ham in our local contest club mentioned that he once had the same issue
and his problem ended up being RF getting into the computer cables. He cured
it by adding toroid filters to the cables. Since DX4WIN works fine, I am not
sure that is the answer to my problem. But it could be yours -- think about if
there is any chance RF is getting into the pc.

Let me know what you find out.

Dave, N4QS

I use a Kenwood 480 with remoterig and happens to me also. I believe the
problem is that when dx4win looses cat control, deactivate the cat control (com
port). Cat control via internet looses some packets from time to time. Dx4win
thinks that lost the cm port and deactivate it.

I use the same setup with writelog also. When writelog looses the cat control
the freq freezes, writelog continues to work and after some seconds finds again
the radio.

Some others users complain about the same: Dx4win pop up a message every time
it looses the CAT control - com port. Writelog behaviour would be much better
to have.

I set-up my logbook just as I wanted it, and as it was in v8.05.

Then, I went to the update area and updated a couple of files (as the
program suggested), and when I returned to the program I immediately noticed
that my logbook set-up had returned to the default setting!

I set-up the logbook again, updated again, and the same thing happened! Yes,

I must be doing something wrong - surely?

Can anyone advise.

Hello Bob,

The program only does phone, cw, and digital because that is what the League
counts for DXCC; they don't care which digital mode you use for your digital
DXCC. The reports generator looks at the entire log, or a selection, but
will not recognize the F8 filter.

There are two ways to get the report info you want. One (I think the
easiest) is to use the method I described in my last email. The other would
be to assign all of your JT65 QSOs to a group, make a selection (different
than a filter) of that group number, and do your report on the selection.

I have version 8.02 and it does accept JT65 in the mode column of all the

tried to do was go to reports>report generator and do a search by mode. JT65
doesn't show, only PHONE, CW and DIG.

The F8 filter will not work this way; the report will still look at all of
the QSOs in your log. There are a couple of ways to do it, but I think the
easiest would be to filter for JT65, export the filtered QSOs to another log
file, and do your report(s) from that file. None of the ARRL awards care
about signal reports, so you don't need them for a submission.

Paul has announced that he is working on a new version and it is in beta
test. I'm sure he is reading the reflector and will have this import thing
corrected in the new version.

FWIW, I find it easier to log the QSOs directly in DX4WIN, rather than
importing my WSJT-X log.

Robert,

If you import the QSOs from WSJT-X into DX4WIN, JT65 and the received and
sent signal reports should show up in the Notes for this Call box--which is
an incorrect mapping. You then must manually cut and paste to move the JT65
comments from the Notes for this Call box into the Notes for this QSO box.
If you are entering the QSOs manually, you can enter JT65 directly into the
Notes for the QSO box. Once you have JT65 entered into the Notes for this
QSO box for all of your Jt65 QSOs, you can do a search by pressing F8 and
then entering JT65 in the Notes box -- when you hit enter all of your JT65
Qs should be displayed. With this filter displayed, you should be able to
then run reports as you want.

Rumor has it that Paul may be working on a new version that will fix this
problem. Can any beta testers speak to this?

I have logged over 100 Q's and the they do show up at JT65 in the mode
column of the logbook.

I'm trying to determine which DX countries I have worked..

Re: [Dx4win] JT65 in report

2017-08-11 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry

Dave, N4QS

Subject: [Dx4win] Lost Settings

Hello,

I have been using this program for a very long time and this is a first for
myself.

I am using Version 8.05 on a Windows XP Pro machine that is not on-line for
the Internet.

Today I fired up the machine and an error code came up when I started
DX4WIN program. I think it was a cfg file. Not 100% sure due to it came up
and went away quick. My saved log did not open. I shut down the program and
rebooted my computer.

When I started up the DX4WIN program I had to open my saved file. Good news
was I saw the last QSO I made yesterday. Bad news is I had to go into the
Preferences to reset all my settings.

 Any idea what happened?

I do have the entire program saved on a flash stick. Is there a way I can
get my old settings back from the saved program?

Re: [Dx4win] Importing JT65

2016-08-23 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
John,

Your suggestion solved the problem. I downloaded and ran ADIF Master.
Opened wsjtx_log.adi and left clicked on the header "Comment". That brought
up a pull down list of header names. I selected Notes and the header was
changed to Notes. I saved the file and then imported it into DX4WIN. The
comment information now went into the Notes for this QSO field instead of
the Notes for this Call field. This is better than having to change 195
QSOs by hand.

Now if we could just solve the JT9 issue. Hi, hi

Thanks to Jim, Lee and John for the assistance.

Re: [Dx4win] JT65A

2016-08-10 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry
Cort,

I use WSJT-X for JT65. It is also available as a free download. I setup
both WSJT-X and DX4WIN to run off of the same com port. But I do not run
them at the same time. When I want to work JT65, I click on Radio in DX4WIN
and click on Stop Radio, but I keep DX4WIN open. This disconnects DX4WIN
from the radio and opens up the com port.

I then open WSJT-X and it automatically connects to the radio. When I am
finished making a JT65 contact, the QSO is saved to the wsjt.log file. I
then import the log file into DX4WIN. Just go to File, Import/Export, make
sure ADIF is selected at the top, click on Import, go find the WSJT file in
your directory, double click on it, then when the window for Options for
Duplicates pops up, select Ignore Duplicate QSO. This will ensure that you
only import any new JT65 QSOs into your DX4WIN log.

Since the signal reports from WSJT-X incorrectly go into the Notes for this
Call field, I then cut and paste to move the signal report information from
that field to the Notes for this QSO field.

When I am done working JT65, I close WSJT-X -- which frees up the com port.
I then click on Radio in DX4WIN and Start Radio to connect the radio back to
DX4WIN. Again, not elegant but effective. BTW, it is fun to work weak
signal JT65 on 6m as well as the other HF bands. So you should give it a
try.

It would be great if Paul would someday start enhancing DX4WIN again. I am
sure many of us would like to see an automatic interface between WSJT-X and
DX4WIN like there is for MMTTY. We also need DX4WIN to support JT9 as a
mode. I might also add that an automatic interface for Fldigi would be
great for the many other digital modes currently available. But Paul has
been strangely inactive and incommunicado for five or six years now.

For the time being, this is a workaround that is cumbersome but pretty
foolproof. Good luck.

Dave, N4QS

think all you do is go to Preferences, Screen and uncheck the Leave All

Dennis,

I used to have a Steppir and it worked very well with DX4WIN. You have to
go into the Control tab of preferences in DX4WIN and enable the Steppir
functions. Then you have to go into the menu system of the SDA100 and setup
the controller so that it will track the radio. It has been a while, but I
think you had to select Kenwood as the radio type. Once you have the
controller setup correctly, then you have to enable Auto Track on the front
panel of the controller. It should then retune as the radio changes
frequency every 25 khz.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN and SteppIR?

2016-05-21 Thread N4QS, Dave Perry

I have DX4WIN at home and SteppIR at work club so could not answer direct
with that combo. As long as DX4WN is following your radio OK then you "Y"
the SDA-100 from the same serial line and it listens in and sets itself too.

Re: [Dx4win] RTTY & dx4win latest version

2016-01-22 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
MMTTY can also make use of an external sound card such as Signalink USB or
any other sound card installed in your Windows software. Open the MMTTY
window in DX4WIN, select Option tab in MMTTY, then Soundcard tab and select
the sound card that you would like to use. As someone suggested earlier, if
you have an external soundcard for RTTY, it is good practice to ensure that
your computer soundcard is selected as the default in Windows--while the
appropriate external soundcard for RTTY is selected in MMTTY as the one it
will use. This ensures that computer generated sounds and beeps do not get
sent to your radio.

Bernie, off the top of my head, the RTTY window was to operate RTTY with
external hardware devices that had a COM port interface, like a HAL or TNC.
The MMTTY window interfaces to the MMTTY software which makes use of your
computer's sound card.

[Dx4win] FW: JT44 mode issue!

2016-01-20 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
Ernie,

I too would like to see some updates from Paul. In the meantime, try this
to get JT44 contacts to update DXCC totals:

Go to Preferences, Awards, ensure that first tab - DXCC - is highlighted,
then in the lower left box, make sure that there is a check mark for JT44.
You can do the same for other modes and awards if desired.

This should ensure that JT44 counts for your DXCC Digital totals.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [Dx4win] JT44 mode issue!

I still use DX4Win, despite the authors complete lack of interest for the
past five or so years.

But the problems I don't like with the program continue to add, and have
just about reached the limit of my patience.

For instance, there is no way to easily maintain existing name and QTH
information in the 'Notes for this QSO' field when there is a change in
either/both the callsign owners name or, much more commonly, his QTH. Not
life threatening but, for me, irritating. Yes, you can use the 'Notes for
this call' box, but that's messy, to say the least.

Then, I found out (as we all did) that DX4Win will not record a proper
signal report for JT type modes - so I make do with manually recording it in
the 'Notes for this QSO' box, and handwriting the report in the body of my
QSL card - I have a 'Comment' line on my card, so it doesn't look 'too' bad!

Then, I found out that I could not correctly record my JT9 QSOs - again a
workaround, I make do with calling them 'JT44' QSOs, for the sole purpose of
'housing' them within DX4Win. But the QSL card was now looking distinctly
messy before my 'manual intervention' corrects the mess. Yes, I could use an
external label printing program - but why should I have to?

Today, quite by accident (in fact, absolutely by accident) I found that, in
recording 'JT9' QSOs as 'JT44' QSOs, that a JT44 QSO has no effect (again, I
repeat, NO effect) on my DXCC totals - it does not update them. Unless
someone can point out the error of my ways - in which case I will gladly
stand corrected. So, I temporarily recorded all JT9 (JT44) QSOs as RTTY
QSOs, and found two band/mode fills. Remember, when you are a keen DXer,
small fish are sweet!

The bitterness/frustration that you can possibly note in my writing is
because a wonderful program, that I still fundamentally really like, is
becoming a bit of a laughing stock among my contemporary VK mates, all of
who have urged me to 'move on' to a more modern logger, or at least one that
is still supported. Because NONE of them have these sorts of problems.

In fact, it is wasn't for the sensational efforts of Jim AD1C over the past
five years and the helpful hints to all over a long period from Guy ON4AOI,
I fear DX4Win would have already fallen over - 'cause it is patently clear
that Paul does not give a damn.

So, two questions -

(1) Can anyone verify that recording a QSO in 'JT44' mode doesn't update
DXCC totals - or, if it does, tell me where I went wrong, and

(2) Does anyone actually know if Paul is still alive, and could ask him
what his intentions for DX4Win are. If it's to take no further effective
interest, just tell us. We could all move on. That's the easy bit.

Sorry for the 'cry' - but, by God, it's getting so frustrating.

Dennis,

Unless the spot has RTTY in the Remarks, DX4WIN has no way of knowing which
mode to put the radio in. In that situation it can only go by the CW Cutoff
frequency for each band that you set in Preferences and it will either
select CW or SSB. However, you will find that if RTTY is in the remarks
section of the spot, DX4WIN will change your mode to RTTY. So the answer to
your question is that it depends on the spot. If you add a spot using
DX4WIN (Control A) and your radio is in RTTY mode, it will add RTTY to the
Remarks section automatically. Have fun.

click on a spot in the bandmap and have the radio stay in RTTY mode, but,
that's not such a big deal to me because now I can click on the call, name

bit in your personal life and you were looking at getting back to working

if any, may be.
I know that I am, in general, satisfied with what DX4Win does. The only
thing I really want is hooks to flDigi so I (we) can run digital modes and
log those contacts seamlessly. I suspect this is a significant change as I
recall reading somewhere that the way the current digital programs integrate
with other programs does not exist is DX4Win.
The other issue I see requested a lot is the ability to log other modes.
That would become even more important if the program was able to interface
with the current crop of digital programs.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Dx4win] Disconnects

2015-06-07 Thread Dave Perry
Bill,

Yes, there is an easy way to stay connected within DX4WIN. W4GKF actually
has a detailed paper on the web that provides very extensive instructions
how to set up both CC User and DX4WIN.

In short, you need to go into CC User, click on Configuration, click on
Ports/Logging Programs and then make sure that the Enable Telnet and Use
Port 7300 are both checked. Then go into DX4WIN and when you right-click to
open the Packet Window, scroll down until you find LOCALCC
User,localhost:7300 and select that internet address (don't select your
local dx cluster node). DX4WIN will now connect directly to CC User via the
local port 7300.

Using this approach, I use CC User to stay connected to my local cluster
24/7 since it has excellent built in features to automatically stay
connected. I then merely connect to CC User via the local host port as
described above whenever I open DX4WIN.

You can also go the AD1C's support site and there is an application note
about this same feature and the link to the W4GKF paper.

Mine disconnects from our clubs CC cluster. Intervals are random but
generally 2 to 4 hours. VE7CC's client and the one in N1MM will stay
connected to this cluster seeming forever, i.e., I have never seen a
disconnect. Is there an easy way to update the cluster client in DX4WIN?

Re: [Dx4win] Digital modes rtty psk

2015-04-01 Thread Dave Perry
Hi Bob,

Yes, you can use MMTTY within DX4WIN without the rig file. You will have to
enter the Mode and Band by hand for each RTTY QSO. But you can capture
other information such as Callsign, name, qth and grid by double clicking
within the MMTTY receive window. You will also be able to use the function
keys to transmit messages.

I have never used the digital modes With in dx4win.
If I want to use the mmtty module does the rig file NEED to work with mmtty?
Or since there is NO rig file for a FT-991 does that mean I can not use
mmtty with in Dx4win?

Re: [Dx4win] how to answer bureau cards

2015-02-11 Thread Dave Perry
Steve,

Hit F5 a couple of times to open the log entry window until the QSL lines
are showing. For any QSOs that I would like to mark Y for label but hold
for printing later, I change the Method box to either Direct, $$$ or Other
-- something other than Buro. For all bureau cards, I have preferences
setup so that when I hit F2 to show the QSO Confirmed and then enter a Y in
the Label field, it also automatically keeps the Method set to Buro. Then
we you get ready to print Bureau cards only, make sure that you select
Bureau in the Method box in the upper Right of the Print QSL Labels window.
This should print out all of your bureau cards in order without printing any
other QSOs marked with any other Method selections. Check your Preferences
setup by going to File, Preferences and F2 Key tab. It works very well once
you get used to it.

I've got a pile of cards to answer with bureau cards from me. The usual
type, mostly Japan and probably none help my DXCC standings. I would like
to enter them in my logging program with a Y in the QSL label box so the
labels will print. But I also have many legitimate contacts that I needs
cards from already marked in the program. I usually batch sending out cards
every month or two depending on the quantity and importance to me.

So how do I mark the bureau cards for labels yet not mix them up with the
more important cards I have on hold in the program?

Duane,

Just press F1 and you get a very complete user's guide. I believe there is
a printer icon at the top if you want to print it out. L stands for label

Is there a current user's manual for DX4WIN Ver. 8.0x? I'm finding lots of
things new to me that have changed since the last level that I spent a lot
of time working with that I'd like to browse the manual about. For
instance, just worked a new band/mode/country, and the country window shows
the entry as L whereas I'm used to it saying W for worked until it
progresses to the next (C = Confirmed) level. What is L? Logged? Why
not Worked? And there are other items I'm scratching my head over trying

Re: [Dx4win] DXCC Submission Help Pse

2014-12-21 Thread Dave Perry
Mike,

Here is how I do it:

1. Go to Reports, Awards, and uncheck Lotw under the Confirmation box in
the upper left. This ensures that you will only be submitting confirmations
which have been confirmed via a card.

2. Click on Reports, Award flags and then select DXCC Mixed in the upper
box and Clear Submitted in the Action box and then click on the Change
button. Next select DXCC band in the upper box, Clear Submitted and Change.
Finally, select DXCC mode in the upper box, Clear Submitted and Change.
This clears out all QSOs that you might have already marked for Submission.
This step is a precaution to ensure that you did not run Submission before
with the LOTW button selected as outlined in Step 1.

3. Click on Reports and under Report / Action, select Submission. This
will mark all cards eligible for DXCC credit for Submission and create a
report that you can view. You should right click and print the report. It
would be great if Paul would allow the user to right click on this report
and create an ADIF file for submission to the ARRL. Unfortunately, you
cannot create the ADIF file at this point. So save the report that you just
printed out and move on to Step 4.

4. Go back to the main QSO entry screen and press F5 several times until
the Award boxes appear at the bottom of the window. Then hit F8 and click
on the Mixed box under DXCC and select S (for submission). Then click on
File in the upper left on DX4WIN and select Import/Export. Select ADIF and
then File again in the smaller window and Export. It should prompt you with
a warning that you are running a Filter, say yes that you want to export
using the filter. Name the file something like yourcall mixed. You have
just created an ADIF file for all QSOs eligible for DXCC Mixed credit. You
have to repeat this process two more times -- after doing a F8 filter for
DXCC Band and then a filter for DXCC Mode. You should end up with three
ADIF files named yourcall mixed, yourcall band and yourcall mode. Remember
where you saved these ADIF files.

5. Finally, go to the ARRL website and log into the online DXCC submission
page. I can't remember the exact navigation within the submission pages,
but in essence you are simply going to import the three ADIF files one at a
time. The DXCC online form allows you to import multiple ADIF files into
the form. Very easy. When you get done, you should click on the View
Submission button and compare all the listed QSOs in this report to the
DX4WIN Submission report that you printed out in Step 3. When I did this,
my online report matched the DXCC Submission report exactly. I then merely
had to sort my cards to appear in the order as presented in the online
submission form and then complete the submission. I took all of my cards to
my local DXCC card checker.

This process is a bit complicated and requires some advanced knowledge of
DX4WIN. Paul could make this whole process a snap by allowing users to
create an ADIF file directly from the Submission report once it is
generated.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Ok, I have a DXCC submission nearly ready to go. I know, nothing like
waiting until the last minute.

Anyhow, I am looking for ways to generate the report using ONLY the
submissions I have already selected using a combination of filters and
manual entries.

If I choose submission in the DXCC report generator, I get all my entries
plus an additional 175 or so that I don't want to deal with at this time. Is
there a way to run the submission report and not have it select additional
entries that are not wanted? If so, that would pretty much wrap up the
process for me, other than sorting the cards to match the list and
segregating the multiple entry ones.

If that is not possible, is there a way to set a filter that will give me a
report that shows entries marked 'submission' regardless if the submission
is for Band, Mode, or Mixed, or any and all of the above?
Then I can do the grunt work in Excel.

As it stands at the moment, the only way I can come up with to generate the
submission report is mainly brute force and awkwardness. I have to filter on
Band, Mode, and Mixed submissions individually, merge the files in Excel,
delete duplicate entries, and then arrange them in the proper DXCC
submission order. Certainly doable but definitely a PITA!

Any and all hints, tips, tricks, or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN UPDATE

2014-09-06 Thread Dave Perry
It would be nice if Paul would communicate with his user base a bit more
frequently. I think he is trying to set some sort of a record to see how
long the program will maintain an active user base without him ever
responding or providing an update again. Hi, hi

But I must say that DX4WIN still performs flawlessly in managing my 80,000+
contacts across several different call signs. It also interfaces
beautifully with SteppIR and the Top Ten Devices DX Doubler (SO2R box) and
Band Decoder -- and my two K3s. Plus, we get all of the great free support
from Jim, AD1C.

If Paul was trying to charge us an annual maintenance fee, that would be a
different matter. I have tried converting to HRD and DXLabs several times
and both come crunching to a halt when I try to load in my number of
contacts. There is also no practical way to automatically enter all of the
DXCC confirmations for almost 2,500 band/countries into a new program.

Unfortunately, I do not recommend DX4WIN to friends given the lack of
support and communication from Paul and the uncertainty of support for the
program going forward--especially when new users would have to pay for a
non-supported product. But whenever logging programs come up for
discussion, I tend to be quiet and count my blessings that I have the best
program on the market--and I don't have to pay an annual maintenance fee.
Why let everyone else in a our great little secret?

In short, it is still an excellent program and it's free! Shh...!

DX4Win has been motionless in respect to program improvements for many years
now, probably six or seven. The update from v7 to v8 was pretty much useless
as the digital inclusion never was successful.

I moved from WJ2O in 2004, when DX4Win was pretty much state of the art, at
least in terms of amateur radio logging programs, and have watched it remain
more or less motionless while a number of other programs simply passed it in
terms of output. Or, at least, so I am told.

At this stage, the only reason I don't move is that the two or three
programs that are 'allegedly' at the top of the programming tree are so
complex, and do so many things that I am not the slightest bit interested
in, and take so much computer management skills and time that I cannot be
bothered.

DX4Win has peaked - if you want to have your logger do smarter things, you
are going to have to move programs. Simple as that. Do I kike the situation
- not really, but like the great majority of us, nought I can do about it.

My view.

I've released test version of the new version of this program:

  http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/

You can download it from here:

  http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/download/dx4wlotw_v7.0_20140428.exe

This is an installation kit, so download it and then run it to install
the program. It MUST be installed in the same directory as
DX4WIN.EXE. If it is not installed in the correct directory, you may
see an error message like the following:

Could not open prefix mapping file:
  c:\dx4w805\save\import\adif.pmp
Are you sure the program is installed in correct directory?

[I may change this to happen as soon as you start the program, rather
than waiting until you click on the Compare button.]

NOTE: if you try to run the program and get an error message about
mfc100.dll, your computer may be missing a Microsoft library.
Instructions for installing this missing library is at the top of this
 page:

  http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/

The instruction at the top link above, for collecting the data and
running the program, are somewhat out-of-date, but I don't have the
tools to change them at the moment.

 The program requires two inputs:

 1. DXCC listing report from DX4WIN (instructions on web page still
 correct here).

 2. DXCC QSL Download (ADIF) from ARRL LoTW web site:

   * Log into the ARRL LoTW site (http://lotw.arrl.org)
   * Click on Awards in the menu bar at the top
   * On the Logbook Awards page, click on Select DXCC Award Account
   * On the Your Logbook DXCC Award Account page, look on the
 right-hand side for this sentence:

For an ADIF download with the details of all QSLs in your
DXCC record use DXCC QSL Download.

   * Click on the DXCC QSL Download hyperlink and save that file
in the same directory as your DX4WIN DXCC Listing report (which
doesn't necessarily have to be your DX4WIN directory).

Now run the program from the Start menu (or double-click the desktop
 icon if you created one).

  * click on the DXCC QSL Download button, navigate to and select
the file you downloaded in step #2 above.

  * click on the DX4WIN Report button, navigate to and select the
file you created in step #1

[I may reverse the order of the two buttons at the top, so DX4WIN is
 first, and LoTW is second.]

  * click on Compare

The output should be the same as before (i.e. as described on the web
page whose link is at the top of this message).

Please send me bug reports, comments, etc. so I can improve the
program. It has only had minimal testing. Please try including
deleted entities vs. not including them. Please try band vs.
 frequency in the logbook.

Re: [Dx4win] County and Grid Refill

2014-03-22 Thread Dave Perry
Scott,

I am not entirely sure, but I believe that Paul intended this to happen with
merges. The reason is that stations do tend to operate mobile or from
different counties and grids from time to time. So as a precaution, I
assume he does not automatically fill those fields. When you are adding a
new QSO, you are presumably looking at the entry and verifying the
information before you save the QSO. When I look back into my log, there
are many stations who have operated from different QTHs over the years. So
I don't necessarily want DX4WIN assuming the county and grid. This is just
a guess on my part. It is sometimes hard to know the mind of a programmer!

Subject: [Dx4win] County and Grid Refill

There has been one behavior of DX4WIN that has irritated me for years so I
thought I would finally post a note and see if anyone has figured it out.
When I am logging in QSLs received I enter in the County, Grid, and First
Name of the operator. Then, on a second QSL or QSO on the same card I have
to reenter the County and Grid all over again while the first name gets
Refilled on the record. I can't think of a time where I have ever had the
County and Grid change between QSOs or QSL cards. Is there a way to have the
County and Grid fields act like the name field and get Refilled as soon as
one entry is made for that callsign? I looked through preferences but didn't
see anything.

Note that if I Add a new QSO with a callsign having County and Grid already
entered then yes they get Refilled. But if I merge a DX4WIN log into the
existing log then the Refill does not occur. And this is the way I usually
populate my log. I have a log for a contest which is exported from the
contest software as ADIF. I then create a new DX4WIN log to make sure I have
all the import parameter correct. Then I merge this new DX4WIN log into the
existing master log. That way I minimize the risk of messing up the master
log during the import process.

Go to Files/Preferences/QSO. In the lower right under CW Frequency cutoff,
select the band and then enter the cutoff frequency. I think the default
for 30M is 10,500 kHz. You can set it anywhere you want.

[Dx4win] SO2R Question

2014-02-27 Thread Dave Perry
Paul or anyone on the reflector:

I just purchased a second K3 and have it working nicely as the second rig
within DX4WIN. I like the toggle feature that allows me to shift back and
forth between the two radios.

I am thinking about purchasing the DXDoubler SO2R product from Top Ten
Devices as well as their new band decoder. I would like to use one band
decoder with both rigs since I have one feed line running out to a remote
antenna switch. Here are my questions:

1. If I select Top Ten as the band decoder within the Control tab under
preferences and use LPT1 to connect the pc to the band decoder, will DX4WIN
send BCD data for both radios to the band decoder - depending on which one I
have toggled as the active radio (using Ctrl, Shift, F12)? For example, if
radio 1 is on 20M and radio 2 is on 40M will DX4WIN send the required BCD
data depending on which one is toggled in DX4WIN? The documentation
indicated that BCD data would be sent for radio 1 but did not appear to
mention if this would also happen if a second radio was also connected like
I have it now. I would hope that BCD data is sent anytime I toggle between
the two radios.

2. My second question is about the DXDoubler and how it works with
DX4WIN. Dave at Top Ten said that DX4WIN reverses the selected radio. I
assume that what he means is that if I select Radio 1 in DX4WIN the
DXDoubler device will select Radio 2. Is this a know issue with DX4WIN and
could this be fixed in a future update? That is why I am checking. Here is
a quote from the Top Ten Devices website:

DX4WIN, like many other logging programs (eg. CT, NA, TR, WriteLog), toggles
Pin 14 on the selected LPT port when the operator changes radios. The
defacto standard is that Pin 14 is high when Radio 1 is selected. However,
DX4WIN drives Pin 14 high when Radio 2 is selected. Although there are ways
to reverse cables and the like, so that switching works properly, the LEDs
on the DXD will always be reversed. The purpose of this modification is to
rearrange the internal logic in the DXD, so that everything functions
properly, and the LEDs truly reflect the selected radio.

I will also be using the DXD with N1MM, so I would want both logging
programs to handle the radios the same way. I would not want to make the
suggested Mod to the DXD to make it work with DX4WIN if it would then make
N1MM operate in reverse. I wonder if Paul has a reason for not following
the de facto standard? I would certainly want the LEDs to indicate the
correct radio when using either program.

Does anyone on the reflector use either of these products with DX4WIN? Any
tips or suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you.

Re: [Dx4win] LoTW and 2 Computers

2014-02-23 Thread Dave Perry
Hi Ron,

I assume you must mean that the TQSL program is on computer 2 which is also
online. If so, then yes you can copy the LOTW adif file from computer 1 to
computer 2. Then select it when running TQSL.

However, you will also want to download the QSL confirmations from Lotw from
time to time. When you do that, the download file will come to your
Downloads folder on computer 2. You will need to use your flash drive to
transfer that file from computer 2 to computer 1. You can then import that
file into DX4WIN by going to the LOTW tab at the top and selecting Import
from LOTW. That will update your log with the LOTW confirmations.

But you should have no problem using 2 pcs like you propose. You might also
backup your DX4WIN log file on to computer 2 if you are not doing that
already.

I have two computers.

the radios.
#2 - The second computer OS is Win 7 Pro and is on-line.

If I run the LoTW program on computer #2, can I just Export the LoTW ADIF

Thanks for any and all help!

Is anyone else using this program with DX4Win V7.7?

Also if anyone is using V8.05 I would be interested if it works successfully
with this version?

The issues I have are as follows..

1) If I use a preset in PstRotator, when I return to DX4Win and do
F11 to move to the bearing in **THE CALLSIGN ALREADY IN THE LOGGING
WINDOW** the rotator does not turn.

2) The same thing happens if I use the PstRotator STOP button, I can't then
turn to the direction of the current callsign.

The only way round I have found is to click on a different spot - not save
the current QSO - then click back to the wanted spot - not save again. and
then the rotator will turn.

Any report of this working or not-working for other would be useful.

Thanks,

I have no idea what is involved in a change to the RTTY interface code in
DX4Win. The interface is publicly documented in the MMTTY Programmers
Info and can be used freely. Developers of DXLab Suite, Logger32, N1MM
Logger and WriteLog have all either replaced the traditional *.exe interface
or supplemented it with the added *.ocx interface for MMTTY and/or 2-Tone in
the last year.

One benefit of including (or switching to) the *.ocx interface would be the
ability to replace the old PSKcore PSK31 support with MMVARI which would
instantly provide BPSK63/125 and MFSK as well as multi- channel PSK/MFSK
receive capability.

with N1MM. I have copied the 2Tone.exe file into the MMTTY directory
within DX4WIN as well as the 2Tone.ini file - but did not overwrite
the MMTTY.ini per the 2Tone installation instructions. I then tried
to replace the executable path within DX4WIN to the following:

 C:\program files\MMTTY\2Tone.exe

The program tries to load within the MMTTY window of DX4WIN, but I
get an error message that 2Tone cannot run standalone and that it
must run with another logging program like N1MM. (The 2Tone
documentation does say that it can run with other logging programs.)

The installation instructions for 2Tone say to not modify the
original MMTTY.ini file and to leave it in the MMTTY directory
because 2Tone needs that file to run. So I am wondering why DX4WIN
cannot run 2Tone as a replacement to MMTTY like N1MM? I have also
copied the XMMT.ocx file and placed it in the DX4WIN directory.

Are there any other changes that need to be made within the DX4WIN
logging program for it to work with 2Tone? I tried emailing Paul
with DX4WIN and David with 2Tone, but neither one has responded so far.

Can anyone else provide any assistance? Thank you.

 Dave, N4QS

It was remarkable to see the clarity of copy in 2Tone compared to

Re: [Dx4win] Band Map

2013-08-01 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
Hal,

I finally had a chance to test the bandmap on 12, 10 and 6 again as you and
Jim, AD1C requested. It works fine on all bands with my K3. It will move
the red arrow up and down as I tune the rx. It will jump to any spot
(callsign) on the band whenever I double click on that spot -- either from
the DX Spots window or the bandmap window. I have been active on 6M this
summer, and I frequently use the bandmap to jump from one spot to the next
on that band. It essentially tracks the Radio Frequency control window that
I always have open when using DX4WIN. When the frequency is read from the
K3 and updated in the Radio Frequency control window, it updates the
frequency by moving the red arrow on the bandmap simultaneously. But I just
closed that window and the bandmap still works fine on its own. It also
tracks any frequency changes that I make using any of the memories from the
K3. I just noticed that when the K3 is in split mode, the bandmap tracks
the VFO B frequency. When I turn split off, it immediately goes back to
tracking VFO A. All of this testing was done on 10M. But it works fine on
all bands.

I recently discovered that all my QSL dates were missing from my log. The
computer that the log is on sometimes reboots by itself so I don't know if
there is any correlation.

I discovered the missing data when some QSL cards arrived and I attempted to
enter the data into the program. I noticed that there was no QSL dates that
represented the dates I sent the QSL cards to the other hams. I entered
the date of April 20, 2013 as an approximate sending date as I did a large
batch of cards around that time. At first, I figured that I missed a few
dates in the log, but checking on the LOG display, I noticed that there were
no dates going back to my first entries in 1957 except my April 20th dates.

Any ideas ?

I do have a back-up done 6 months ago, but I don't know how I would only
enter the QSL dates and not affect any other data.

Is this an unusual event to lose all the data in one field throughout the
program?

Welcome to DX4WIN. It does not auto-connect, but it does save the most
recent dx-cluster that you connected to at the top of the list. So it is
easy to find your favorite the next time you start DX4WIN. I actually use
CC User by VE7CC to stay connected to may favorite cluster outside of
DX4WIN. I then connect DX4WIN to CC User by using the following address:

This link tells you how to do this: http://www.w4gkf.com/dxcluster

You should also refer to the excellent support by AD1C by going to this

Re: [Dx4win] second log

2012-12-14 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
Steve,

This doesn't answer your question, but I am wondering if you have considered
making your contest station call a second group within your master log?
There are several advantages if you do that. First, when you download from
Lotw, it will download both calls at once. It also allows you to see
contacts with stations across multiple calls. I setup N4QS as my default
group and then added V31QS as group 1. I am going to Grand Cayman next year
and will add that log as group 2. My users of DX4WIN manage multiple calls
like this using the groups feature. Just something to consider. BTW, you
can then setup group filters to view just one of the groups at a time --
very handy for running reports by group, QSLing, etc.

Re: [Dx4win] LotW Backlog continues to grow ...

2012-12-12 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
Yes, Rick is right. You just open up TQSL Cert and make a couple of clicks
with the mouse. Here are the instructions right out of the Lotw website:

Requesting A Signed Certificate

Once you have a certificate for your primary callsign you may have old calls
or secondary calls which you want to upload log data to LoTW. All
subordinate calls will have a signed certificate. By having certificates
signed by the primary call certificate all of your QSO data will be kept in
one account.

Use this procedure for appended calls such as W1AW/m, W1AW/p, KP2/W1AW, etc

Here is what you do:

1.Open TQSL CERT
2.In the menu bar select FILE - NEW CERT REQUEST
3.Request a new certificate for your old call or secondary call.

.DO NOT REQUEST SIGNED CERTIFICATES FOR PRIMARY CLUB CALLS. Club calls
cannot be combined with personal accounts. Please see the section about
club callsigns

Beginning Date
.Be sure to use the correct BEGIN when this call was issued to you. If
you are not certain about this date then use the date of the earliest entry
in your log when you operated with this callsign.

.DO NOT use the default date of 1945-11-01. Using the default date
could cause you to upload QSOs that do not belong to this call when you used
it.

Ending Date
.Enter the ending date when you retired this callsign. If you are not
certain about this date then use the date of the last entry in your log when
you operated with this callsign.

.If the call is still current then leave the end date open.

Not much to it!

Agreed. Signing up for multiple portable operations is no big deal.

But, each non-USA station must send a copy of his/her operating license plus
a copy of a government issued ID such as drivers license, passport to this
place in Newington. If I asked my local commissar in Blockavia if I should
do this, he would probably have me locked up for being so stupid... I am
certainly not going to send copies of my drivers license / passport to a
foreign country, thru the 'mail' to get an award with the certainty my ID
will be stolen... So,I don't think it's lazy, just common sense...
It's bad enough sending Green Stamps that never arrive...

and the difficulty of signing up their multiple portable operations.

There is absolutely no issue of singing a portable operation once you have
the initial certificate. It takes less than one business day unless the
operation is from a location that has specific access and licensing
requirements. Even then, it's no more difficult than sending the same
documentation to ARRL that would be needed to be accepted for DXCC
(typically copy of license and landing permit).

Anyone who complains about the sign-up process is too lazy to send copies of
license and ID (equivalent to ham ticket and drivers
license) with a valid mailing address and wait for the password to be mailed
to the address on the ID.

In many cases the process can be short circuited by providing the
documentation in person at one of the many international conventions
ARRL/DXCC/LotW staff attend on a regular basis.

Agreed - 8 days 14 hours!  At the current rate of growth the delay
will be 9 days before tomorrow.  Here are the latest numbers I have:

Upload Time           Time Processed      Elapsed Time
 ==**=
 2012/11/23  18:00    2012/11/27  00:43    3  06:43:34
 2012/11/28  22:32    2012/12/05  02:08    6  03:35:10
 2012/11/29  18:38    2012/12/06  05:10    6  10:32:20
 2012/11/30  00:58    2012/12/06  18:24    6  17:26:26
 2012/11/30  17:04    2012/12/07  17:28    7  00:24:16
 2012/12/01  08:20    2012/12/08  19:09    7  10:49:15
 2012/12/01  12:30    2012/12/09  01:10    7  12:40:49
 2012/12/02  05:00    2012/12/10  19:31    8  14:31:29

The delay is growing out of control - between 12/1 and 112/2 there
were 2.5 times as many QSOs uploaded as LotW processed and LotW has
been processing an *average* of 11,000 QSOs per minute or about
264,000 QSOs per day based on the information on the home page.

If one plots a trend line, the delay is growing exponentially.
The trend indicates a file uploaded *today* is not likely to be
processed *for more than five weeks* based on the current rate of
growth in the backlog.  Based on the processing time for files
uploaded at 0500z on 12/2, there were about 2.25 million unprocessed
QSOs in the queue at that time - and that was 48 hours *after* the
deadline for submitting CQWW CW logs.
With the trend in growth between 11/25 and 12/2, the queue could hold
as many *10 million* unprocessed QSOs (although that is unlikely)!

I know the folks in Newington are saying trust us, but their
performance - and complete failure to provide *current data* -
particularly the failure to provide accurate current status on the
size of the processing queue - makes trust very difficult.

Unbelievable processing times. Delay keeps growing. Up to 8 days just
a few minutes ago. Love the program/system but unless they can come up
with a way to handle the load, then it will die on the vine...

Re: [Dx4win] Radio Timeout

2012-10-12 Thread Dave Perry, N4QS
John and Tom,

I just confirmed the same behavior with the REV button running XP. My K3
timed out after about 20 seconds. I have a subRX on my K3, so I never use
the REV button when running split. I normally just turn on the subRX and
then listen to both frequencies at the same time. The workaround is to use
the A/B button as John suggests. I wonder if a change to the radio control
file in DX4WIN would fix this time out problem when pressing the REV button.

Re: [Dx4win] ADIF Files

2012-04-18 Thread Dave Perry
Jim and Ed,

I did this just a few days for Mixed, Mode and Band. So I ended up with
three ADIF files. I named one n4qs mixed, one n4qs band and one n4qs mode.
I then logged on to the ARRL online DXCC application site. I simply
uploaded each ADIF file. The ARRL application appends all three files
together. It then sorts them by band and mode and allows you to preview the
application via a pdf report. I printed out the pdf report then used that
to sort my cards to match the order of the report. You can edit and/or
delete any of the cards listed on the report before making your final
submission.

Works very smooth.

the current filter. You'd have to do this for all three flags: Mixed,

Another all software option is LP-Bridge which allows you to create several
virtual com ports that can share the same Com port for controlling the

Just do a Google search for N8LP LP Bridge. It's available as a free

Let me know if someone answered your question. The rig control file for the

I use DX4WIN 8.05 and N1MM Logger. My automatic antenna switching
arrangement takes advantage of N1MM's user-defined antenna BCD table to
give me a very flexible auto antenna switching scheme without having to
fiddle with wire OR connections and the like. In fact, I use the
Ameritron RCS-10 switch and a simple LPT port interface to let me switch
7 antennas without needing a band decoder.

It would be really great if DX4WIN offered similar flexibility. The
N1MM arrangement is described at

r+Documentation#Configurer_gt_Antennas_Tab

You should export the CQ WW file as an ADIF file for importing into DX4WIN.
Within N1MM, go to File, then Export, then choose Export to ADIF file and

 Subject: [Dx4win] Panadapter SW

 Hi Folks,

I am trying to integrate DX4Win with panadapter software (which one is

TBD) and I cannot figure out how to get the FT9K to send frequency

info and receive commands to/from DX4Win and the panadapter software. It
appears from the advertizing that a virtual serial port splitter like the
 one from
 (http://www.serial-port-splitter.com/serial-port-splitter-examples.html)
would allow both applications to talk to the FT9K over one physical port.
Does anyone have actual experience with such an approach? Any other
suggestions for virtual serial port splitters this one is pricy?

 Thanks for help,

 William Osborne. K5ZQ

Re: [Dx4win] Setting Groups with v8.05

2011-09-05 Thread Dave Perry
No, that does not work. I just tried it. I sure wish that Paul would make
it an option to open the log so that the default group number is
automatically selected as the filter. The log currently opens to all qsos,
and I have to change it to my default group every time that I open the
program.

That works? I thought that was just to set the group number for all

I have updated the utility to compare your DX4WIN DXCC credits with
ARRL Logbook of the World: You can download version 4.0 from:

http://dx4win.ad1c.us/lotw/

This version adds full support for the new PJ entities, now that ARRL
has added them to the Award Credit Matrix on LoTW. You must use a
DX4WIN country file from 4 October 2010 or later to get proper
results.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

Re: [Dx4win] Printing QSLs with LaserJet printer

2011-02-27 Thread Dave Perry
Dan,

Your suggestion did the trick. I selected Heavy Paper Stock and it slowed
the printer down so that the toner fused very nicely to the glossy card
stock. I also want to thank Larry Burke for sending me his application note
on how to setup DX4WIN to print QSL cards on a LaserJet printer. Now I want
to figure out how to print addresses from QRZ.COM directly on to envelopes.
If anyone has a fast and foolproof way to do that, let me know.

Need to change the settings on what type of paper you have when you go to
print in Properties for your printer. Choose the glossy card stock (or
similar). It slows the print speed down so there is more heating time to
compensate for the thicker paper. Rubbing off is a sign the toner was not
fused fully. I can look details up if you need. Same settings if you are
 using glossy photo paper.

My Dymo label printer recently went on the blink, so I am experimenting
 with
printing cards directly from my HP LaserJet 2035n printer. I am wondering
if anyone has had any success printing cards with a LaserJet. I am
 finding
that the printed text is not adhering to the card and tends to flake off.
 I
have two types of QSL cards -- one glossy finish and the other a more
 normal
card stock type finish. Both seem to have the same problem. I can print
the QSL on to regular copy paper and the text adheres just fine. So I am
thinking it has something to do with the thickness of the card stock that
does not allow the card to roll through the printer evenly enough to get a
good heat seal on the toner.

I may have to revert to printing out sheets of labels in the LaserJet.
 BTW,
I have noticed that the labels that I printed from the Dymo Label printer
tend to fade over several years time. Thus, I do not want to go back to
 the
Dymo printer. I need to find something that printers more permanently. I
was hoping the my LaserJet might do that directly on the card stock. But
 so
far no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Dx4win] DXCC Submissions and LoTW

2010-12-03 Thread Dave Perry
No, unchecking Lotw will not work. The problem is with the Submissions report.
If you uncheck Lotw, then the Submissions report includes cards for countries
that were previously confirmed via Lotw confirmations. So the report becomes
meaningless. This has been a shortcoming of the program for some time. I
attempted to show Paul this problem at Dayton several years ago, but he did not
understand the issue.

The Submissions report for DXCC should be changed so that it takes into account
both QSOs that were confirmed by either Lotw and/or card. If you are like me,
I have almost 1,800 band/countries confirmed for the DXCC Challenge -- hundreds
have been confirmed via Lotw and hundreds more by card. So unchecking Lotw as
suggested by Paul and Jim will not work. If I do that, then the Submissions
report tries to submit cards for countries that were previously confirmed by
Lotw. So I have to keep Card and Lotw checked at all times in order for my
DXCC statistics and submissions to make sense.

What we need is a Submissions report that only lists Cards in Hand and will not
attempt to submit a card for a country that was previously confirmed by Lotw
and also checked by the DXCC desk. There is also a small wrinkle that occurs
when I have confirmed a new country by card and by Lotw. In that case, I
always submit that QSO to the ARRL via the online application process in Lotw.
Why have a card checker check a card when I can have it automatically credited
via Lotw? So the submissions report should allow the user to run it for Cards
in Hand in which a Lotw confirmation is also not pending. In other words, when
a country has been confirmed both ways, I want to use the Lotw confirmation --
and thus the card for that country should not be listed on the Submissions
report.

I have an elaborate routine by which I have to run the Submissions report,
export the file, and then use Excel to delete the Lotw confirmations so that
only Card in Hand QSOs (not previously confirmed by Lotw) are listed on the new
Submissions report. I then have to clear all Submit flags in DX4WIN. Enter
only the QSOs being confirmed via Lotw, rerun the Submissions report, export
the file, and then use Excel to delete the Lotw confirmations so that the Excel
report only shows Cards in hand that were not also confirmed by Lotw.

A few simple changes to the Submissions report for DXCC would greatly automate
and streamline the submission process. Again, simply unchecking Lotw under
File, Awards will not work. I have to keep both Card and Lotw checked at all
times in order for the DXCC records to make sense.

Do others agree that this would be a valuable enhancement to the program?

Dave, N4QS

Last night I found that I had a big problem with my log - I printed out a
submission report and started pulling cards and couldn't find cards for most
of the confirmations on the list. This seemed pretty odd until I noticed
that all of these were marked by DX4WIN as confirmed by LoTW, however when I
looked at the site there was no QSL.

What apparently happened is that I downloaded a chunk of my log, used
LoTW/Import for LOTW to import those and DX4WIN didn't check if the contacts
were confirmed, setting the LoTW Cnfm flag for all QSOs.

I was able to recover from this by clearing all of the LoTW confirm flags
(create a selection with Cnfm:Y in the LoTW column then LoTW/Clear LoTW
confirmed which cleared all of them. Downloaded QSLs (not QSOs!) from LoTW
from all of my calls and re-imported, now it looks correct.
I just wanted to warn anyone to be careful what you load into DX4WIN.

Another issue is that the submission report includes all confirmations,
paper plus LoTW. This means that I can't just use it as is (i.e. hand it to
a field checker with my stack of cards) because the LoTW QSLs will need to
 be deleted.
Is there a way that I can create a card-in-hand only submission report?

Re: [Dx4win] export in Cabrillo format

2010-11-29 Thread Dave Perry
George,

Another option is to export out of DX4WIN in ADIF format. Then import into
another contest logging software like N1MM (you can download it for free).
You have to create a new log in N1MM for the CQ WW CW test and then do the
import of the ADIF file from DX4WIN. Once you have the QSOs in N1MM, you
can then do an export in the Cabrillo format.

[Dx4win] Fw: Creating New Log from Existing Log

2010-09-27 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Fred,

I would create a group within your log for you new QTH. Just go to Filter,
Selection and create a new Group Filter. That way you can see all the
contacts with a given call that you made prior to AZ as well as from your
new QTH. This is especially handy if you keep the Same Call and Logbook
windows open when using DX4WIN. The Same Call window shows the group name
for every contact. You can rename groups to make them easier to recall.
Just to go Filter, Edit Group Names. You might want to name the new group
Arizona. You can make the AZ group your default group by selecting its
group number by going to File, Preference and QSO. See group in upper
right
 corner.

You will find that the group functions within DX4WIN are very powerful and
easy to use. Others may know of other ways to use and refer to groups.

Subject: [Dx4win] Creating New Log from Existing Log

I've been through the help file and could not find the answer to my
question: How do I create a new log beginning 01/01/2009 from my
existing log? I moved to AZ from NJ in January of 2009 and, while I want
to keep a Master log of all my QSOs, I want to create one for just those
Qs I've made since moving to AZ. I've not been able to find how to
create such a log. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Dx4win] Using Steppir with DX4WIN

2010-08-26 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
I am getting ready to order a Steppir yagi but want to make sure I order the
correct cables. I use both DX4WIN and N1MM for logging. DX4WIN has built in
support for controlling Steppir antennas. The documentation indicates that I
can continue to use COM1 to connect my pc to my K3 and then I can use another
com port (in my case COM5) to connect my pc to the Data/In port on the SDA100
controller. With this setup, DX4WIN will apparently poll the K3 and pass the TX
frequency automatically to the SDA100 controller whenever the TX frequency
changes. Does this cabling scheme sound right?

Is this approach better than using a Y cable and having the SDA controller
listen
for any frequency exchanges between the pc and the K3?

I am also wondering whether or not N1MM can support Steppir in the same
way. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Re: [Dx4win] Deleting older versions?

2010-08-08 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Jim,

Just for the record, I uninstalled the lpt driver as you suggested. I then
reinstalled it under 8.04. However, it prompted me to install the driver in
the dx4w803\lptdriver folder -- which would have put it right back in the
folder that I had just uninstalled. So I merely typed in a new directory
and selected the main dx4w804 directory under Program Files. Works fine.
Your emails about deleting older versions prompted me to do just that
yesterday. I also upgraded to 8.04 without a hitch.

BTW, nice working you in the NAQP yesterday.

One thing to add (based on an experience I just had trying to remove 8.03):

In DX4WIN 8.0x, first uninstall the LPT driver by going into the:

  dx4w803\lptdriver

directory and running unins000.exe.

Then uninstall that version of DX4WIN. Otherwise, the lptdriver
directory won't be removed.

You will need to run the lptdriver installation again with your most
recent version of DX4WIN if you need it.

Now that I'm up to date with DX4Win, how do I (or do I altogether)
 delete older versions?

The installation process for new versions does not touch the older ones.

 1. Use the usual Windows Control Panel Add/Remove programs icon to
uninstall them (in Vista/Win7, I believe it's just called Programs).

 -or-

 2. Go into each DX4W### directory you want to remove and double-click
 on the unins000.exe application.

[Dx4win] Group question

2010-06-22 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Is there a way for my default group to be automatically opened when I open the
log? I would like group 000 to be the default group. Right now, I open the
log and the selection is automatically set for all QSOs. I have to go into the
Filter tab and select group 000 every time. I am using version 8.02.

Thanks,

I seem to have the opposite problem. My WAZ list shows confirmations
from both LOTW and cards, which renders the WAZ report sort of useless.
I just noticed this when I started to gather the cards for RTTY WAZ.

Subject: WPX, WAZ, County Windows Not Showing LOTW QSO's as Confirmed

 Hello,

Not sure why I didn't notice this before but today I saw that although
DX4WIN shows QSO's confirmed via LOTW in the Main, Country, and Same Call
windows, these same QSO's are only shown as worked in the WPX and WAZ
 windows.

For example: I have VP6DX confirmed via LOTW on all bands, 80-10, SSB and
CW, but those confirmations only show up in the Main Window, Same Call
and Country windows. In the WAZ and WPX windows these QSO's are only
 shown as worked.
Going through my log I see this same situation with other LOTW-confirmed
 calls: ZL1BYZ, VK4MA, ZK3OU, 5W0OU, DR1A, S79GM, TX4T, and KL7J, to name
 a few.

Confirmed LOTW QSO's with HH4/K4QD and TG9IRP show L in the WPX window
but confirmed in the Main,Same Call, and Country windows.

This situation also exists with stateside contacts in the County window.
As an example, I recently worked N4RJ in McIntosh county during the 2010
GA QSO Party. I received an LOTW confirmation but there was not a
corresponding change in the county window as it still shows Worked vice
Confirmed. N4RJ is one of several contacts that have this same problem.

Also, as the QSO's mentioned above were all confirmed via LOTW, that
seems to be the common thread in this situation. When I import a LOTW
file from the LOTW website I use the option Imported QSO sets LOTW
 Confirmed flag.

In the Main window, if I also check the Confirm box (as if I received a
paper QSL) then the WPX and WAZ windows do show a confirmed vice worked
 status.

 Under Preferences|Station I have checked all bands 160-10 (except 60);
SSB/CW/PSK31 under Modes; and Phone/CW/Digital in the Mode group.

Under Preferences|Import I have Accept DX4WIN values displayed and
under Error Reporting I have Prefix differences checked, which I
 believe is the default value.

I have received occasional lotwreport.notfound reports after doing an
LOTW download. Admittedly, I did not pay much attention to them as I saw
that the QSO's listed on these reports did show up as confirmed in the
Main, Same Call, and Country windows. However, looking more closely at
an old report I see that the calls on one of these reports don't show up
as confirmed in one or more of the windows mentioned above (WPX, WAZ,
County) but do show up as confirmed in the Main, Same Call, and Country
 windows.

I downloaded update.bat when Jim, AD1C, made it available and I run
that on a fairly regular basis.

 I am using v 8.03 and Win XP, SP3.

Any ideas as to what I have missed or have not checked?

Do I need to import from LOTW twice, once using the Imported QSO sets
the confirmed flag and then import the same file again using the
Imported QSO sets the LOTW confirmed flag?

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [Dx4win] Filter settings reversed

2009-11-20 Thread Dave Perry N4QS
Jim,

Yes, I got it fixed thanks to Tom, W4KX. Here is what he sent me:

The problem is with the rig file (X4), which includes an errant command to
NORM the vfo whenever VFO B is selected (you can see this yourself when
you double click on a spot and the display will briefly show NORM).

The current commands sent to the rig under a Select VFO B is invoked are
K31;SWH58;SWT13;SWT13;K30;

It's the SWH58 command that norms the radio. So, just change the rig file
for Select VFO B to:

K31;SWT13;SWT13;K30;

and you will be all set!

All I did modify the X4 righ file by deleting the one command SWH58 as he
suggested. Works fine now. Some people may want to norm their filters when
they go into split. Not me. I like keeping my filter settings for both RXs
the same.

My K3 has been working great with DX4WIN except for one issue. When I
double click on a spot that is split, the K3 reverses the filter
bandwidths between VFO A and VFO B. Normally I keep VFO A at 250 Hz and B
at 400 Hz. So when I click on a spot, I want to keep the filter bandwidths
the same. The RX and TX frequencies are being set properly by DX4WIN -- it
is just that the filter bandwidths are being reversed. I am using the
 Elecraft K3 X4 radio file.

Dave, did you ever resolve this? Does ANYONE else with a K3 have this
same problem?
