Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN UPDATE
Just as an FYI: DXLab can import a DX4WIN log. All you have to do is convert it to ADIF and then import it. It can also compare your log with LOTW and flag all discrepancies. When I ran a full comparison against LOTW, DXLab even located data entry errors made by the DXCC desk when they originally hand-entered the QSO data. http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/QSOImport DXLab can also track the USA-CA awards. http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/USCountyStatus I have never had the pleasure of using a software program that is supported as well as DXLab. It is not unusual for a question or bug or enhancement request to be made one day and have a response available the next--sometimes even the same day. The DXLab support group averages over 1,000 messages each month. This doesn't mean the program is buggy, but that no question is too small or repetitive to ask and receive an almost immediate response. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/dxlab/info Of course there is a learning curve, but the suite is made up of eight separate programs that talk to each other. Start with one, get comfortable with it and then add another. I have been a DX4WIN user for over 20 years and finally made the switch to DXLab earlier this year. DX4WIN is adequate for 90% of the amateur community. It is an especially good fit for new or low-activity hams. DXLab can take care of just about everyone. It also interfaces beautifully with SteppIR and the Top Ten Devices DX Doubler (SO2R box) and Band Decoder -- and my two K3s. Plus, we get all of the great free support from Jim, AD1C. If Paul was trying to charge us an annual maintenance fee, that would be a different matter. I have tried converting to HRD and DXLabs several times and both come crunching to a halt when I try to load in my number of contacts. There is also no practical way to automatically enter all of the DXCC confirmations for almost 2,500 band/countries into a new program. Unfortunately, I do not recommend DX4WIN to friends given the lack of support and communication from Paul and the uncertainty of support for the program going forward--especially when new users would have to pay for a non-supported product. But whenever logging programs come up for discussion, I tend to be quiet and count my blessings that I have the best program on the market--and I don't have to pay an annual maintenance fee. Or, at least, so I am told. At this stage, the only reason I don't move is that the two or three programs that are 'allegedly' at the top of the programming tree are so complex, and do so many things that I am not the slightest bit interested in, and take so much computer management skills and time that I cannot be bothered. DX4Win has peaked - if you want to have your logger do smarter things, you are going to have to move programs. Simple as that. Re: [Dx4win] Can't edit a call
Just a note on the callsign change requirement: there have been a few times I have been thankful for the quiet little are you sure you want to do this? prompt when changing a callsign. Everything else may just be noise, but the callsign is primary. That is why I never let that particular little feature bother me. As for migrating that particular feature to contesting loggers like WriteLog, I don't think that particular idea would get very far. Contesting loggers are built for speed where people count keystrokes and bit rates. Anything that would add to either one would be frowned upon. Hi, Paul. I apologize for not being clear. I already have correctly populated FREQ fields and Rx=nn,nnnkHz-populated NOTES fields. Hi, John. I have been using DX4WIN since V2. It has been four-and-a-half years since V8 was released and three years since it was last updated. Last year at this time I told myself I would give Paul one more year to provide us with some meaningful updates or I would move on to an actively-maintained program like DXLAB. Using DX4WIN is second nature to me and the learning curve for a program like DXLAB will be fairly high, but at least DXLAB is moving forward, not stagnating. Wow, Pete! V0.94!! I still have my first 3.5 disk somewhere around here, but I think it is more like V2 or so. I have always upgraded to whatever the latest version was within 24 hours of its becoming available, looking forward to the latest goodies Paul had come up with. I miss that feeling: it has been exactly four years to the day that I downloaded V8.01 and over two-a-and-a-half years since V8.05. Unlike a lot of people who don't seem to understand the software development world, I would gladly pay twice as much twice as often if Paul was able to keep up with the demands on his time, but I understand he has a real life and a real job and as much as DX4WIN means to us, he must be physically and emotionally exhausted from trying to satisfy everyone. My personal problem is that gradually some of my logging wants are becoming needs and at some point those needs will overcome my loyalty to Paul and DX4WIN. Re: [Dx4win] LOTW Support
Hi, Guy. This is from a recent posting on the NCDXF Chat forum: DXLab handles LOTW perfectly. Once I decide to update my LOTW account at the ARRL, I simply make one or two mouse clicks. DXLab handles all the ADIF conversions, logs onto my LOTW account uploads the data, and then logs off. Same thing happens when I want to sync up DXLab with any new QSL's I've received through LOTW. As easy as DXBase was, DXLab is much easier. From what I have read the author of DXLab is very much aware of the strengths, limitations and current problems with the LOTW system and has no desire to increase those problems through indiscriminate uploading. I have long felt the DX4WIN-LOTW-DX4WIN process could be automated and it sounds like DXLab has been able to do that. While this is not the proper forum to discuss the pros and cons of another logging program, I think my question regarding the future of DX4WIN is a valid one. I have been loyal to DX4WIN for a very very long time and I want to stay with it, but technology has always been a moving target and we all must move with it or be left behind. Re: [Dx4win] Feature Request
I want to be able to record when I send a card, how I send it and ideally, where I send it to. Then I want to be able to record when I receive a response and how it was sent. If I send three requests--one direct with an IRC and $2, one OQRS with $5 via PayPal and one via the Bureau--and finally receive a response via LOTW, I want to know when I sent each card, how and with what, and when/how I received the response. As QSL methods become more diverse and direct mail more expensive, these kinds of records could be invaluable and would seem ideal for computerization. Recent upgrades have emphasized awards and LOTW. I would like to see equal emphasis given to the QSL process. Re: [Dx4win] QSL Labels
First make sure every QSL you want to print has the Print flag set to Y. Then make sure you select every QSO that contains any QSL you want to print. That sounds awkward, but just quickly do an F8 search with blank criteria which will effectively select the entire log file. Then select QSL Print. If you still don't print multiple QSOs on your labels, check that your Group selections are the same and that your QSL methods are the same. Like Art says, be sure that you aren't printing both Tnx and Pse labels or that some QSOs list a Manager and some don't. DX4WIN frequently gives me Zone Errors when I import confirmations from LOTW. So far they have all originated in the other station's TQSL installation where they have specified their ITU zone instead of their CQ zone. Re: [Dx4win] So How about it Paul? QRZ.com XML lookup??
In addition to having a rote look-up, also have an option where all empty DX4WIN QSL fields can be filled in with QRZ data on an individual or group basis. And have another option to have existing QSL fields compared with QRZ data to flag any differences, again on a individual or group basis. This would be similar to having LOTW confirmation data used to populate/confirm existing QSL fields (or flag them when they don't match). A known problem with all of this is that some QRZ data is dependent on input from the individual ham. This problem also exists with LOTW confirmations where some people don't know the difference between their own IARU and CQ zone numbers, so they enter the wrong number when they sign their confirmation certificates. There would obviously be a lot of garbage data that D4W couldn't be expected to identify--let alone correct--but the more QSL functionality you can provide, the easier my job is confirm thousands of counties, states and DXCC entities. [Dx4win] DX4WIN QSL Manager Functionality
I am sending this separate from my previous QRZ XML post as I don't want the two confused. This has nothing to do with XML functionality. I have always (since D4W v2.1) wanted more QSL functionality. Let me give a real-world example: In 1998 I sent a QSL to ER4DX via the W5FE QSL service. In 1999 I sent another QSL via the buro. In 2003 I sent another QSL via the buro and uploaded the data to LOTW. In 2005 I sent a QSL direct to his QSL manager with SAE, IRC and $2. My mail bounced. I sent another QSL direct to his QSL manager via a different mailing address with SAE, IRC and $2. No joy. In 2007 I sent a QSL direct to ER4DX with SAE, IRC and $2. In 2008 I sent another QSL direct to a different mailing address with SAE, IRC and $2. In 2009 I sent another QSL direct via Registered Mail with SAE, IRC and $2. In 2010 I received multiple responses via direct and the buro. In 2011 I received a LOTW confirmation. The above dates and QSL methods are approximations from memory. I would dearly love to be able to push a virtual button and have D4W print out a searchable summary of each QSL attempt to ER4DX with dates, methods, addresses, enclosures and results. The previous release (8.x) was heavily oriented toward contesting. I would love to see 9.x be the QSL manager I have always wanted. Thanks for the consideration. Just as an experiment, Eric: Reduce the font size you are using for your label fonts to something small like 8 pt. Arial. If it still doesn't print, then you have a space problem. Re: [Dx4win] ft-2000 on dx4win
Hi, Steve. Every radio supported by DX4WIN is defined by a .rig file. When you select a radio in File-Preferences-Radio, you are actually telling DX4WIN what .rig file to use. The .rig files are kept in the Radios folder in your DX4WIN install directory. For example, my .rig files are kept in C:/DX4W805/Radios. In my Radios folder I see a .rig file for the FT-2000 (file name Yaesu FT2000.rig). You didn't say what version of DX4WIN you are using, but if it is an older version it is possible it didn't come originally with a .rig file for the FT-2000. If you are unable to find an entry for the FT-2000 when you go to File-Preferences-Radio and if Jim has a .rig file available for it, I would download that .rig file and move it into your DX4WIN Radios folder. You should then be able to select it in File-Preferences-Radio. If you are not running the latest version of DX4WIN (v8.05) I suggest that upgrading should be your first step as it will then come with all the latest .rig files. Let us know if these ideas don't help getting you online with your FT-2000. It is possible to read the second VFO on demand instead of only when polling? Here my comments about the new firmware where it all should have been fixed and working now!!! This is not TRUE and probably never will be UNLESS WE STOP TO BUY THERE TRANCEIVERS. MAYBE THEN THEY WILL LISTEN TO RADIOAMATEURS. WHY? This is an email (answer) I got in 2009 when I had talked to a Staff member of ICOM in Friedrichshafen. I left out the name of the sender because it was forwarded. * Dear Mr. Guy, Ive just got an answer regarding readout of the VFO B via PC / CI-V . Unfortunately, its a negative response. For reasons of compatibility with other devices without a second VFO, ICOM Inc did not (and will not) include this function. We are sorry, but we cannot give you any other information. This is crap , because older transceivers can´t be updated via software new transceivers should not have this possibility? It's like driving a Ferrari with bicycle wheels. B4 the latest firmware you could only SET SPLIT ON/OFF, now you can also READ if SPLIT is ON/OFF. There is still NO READ VFO-B or should I say SUB VFO in ICOM language. How Paul implemented it in DX4WIN is in short like this Check split status Change to SUB-VFO (in our terms VFO-B) Read the freq and mode of SUB-VFO Change to MAIN-VFO (in our terms VFO-A) Read the freq and mode of MAIN-VFO Set SPLIT ON/OFF if needed This is the reason why you see the switching between MAIN/SUB Is it safe? I tested this out for many hours on my IC-7800 and had no problems even with dualwatch, but I have a second receiver in the radio and that is a big difference compared to the IC7600 and IC7700. My polling rate is at 2500 or even higher so the switching is not that often. Also because my antennas and other stuff are controlled from a station master where I can select the frequency he needs to use For switching between my antennas. I thought it was SAFE. But Friday night Dick,K7VC send me an email about the tests he did with his IC7700 and the new (v2 not available) rigfile. Freq and mode are readout ok for both Main and Sub VFO BUT He was testing with following settings (probably for the wpx-rtty contest SO2R) MAIN VFO 14090 FSK SUB VFO 28090 FSK With short pollings he had strange effects in TX with his tuner because the radio was going shortly from 20m fsk to 10m fsk. I never tried this since I had it running only in same band. SO IT IS NOT SAFE AND THIS IS THE REASON WHY I ASKED JIM TO WITHDRAW THE RIGFILES FOR DOWNLOAD BECAUSE YOU CAN IMAGINE WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF THERE IS AN AMPLIFIER CONNECTED AND YOU ARE RUNNING ON DIFFERENT BANDS. I will check with Paul if it can be solved but I guess NOT The following command 1C0200FD or 1C0201FD could maybe help but never got any reaction from the transceiver when I tried out. Cmd 1C, Sub Cmd 02, Data 00,01 === Send Read transmit frequency monitor setting, (00=OFF, 01=ON) In worst case the support for SPLIT will be removed for ICOM radios until they come with a descent command for VFO-B There are other programs I tested out and they are acting the same or have other effects. The RS-BA1 that I own also does not do what we hoped for, It only read onetime but when retuning the sub-vfo you have to manually switch between Main and Sub to get it on screen. [Dx4win] DXLab support for the new IC-7600 and IC-7700 firmware releases

This firmware update also enables a transceiver control application to transmit CW from text without any external interface. I extended DXLab's Commander (transceiver control) and WinWarbler (digital modes, CW transmission, phone voice keyer) components to exploit these new capabilities. Recently, Icom has released new firmware updates for the IC-7600 and IC-7700 that include both the read split and transmit CW from text capabilities described above. Jay W5JAY has confirmed that the current release of Commander follows changes to Split made from his IC-7700's front panel. If you have an IC-7600, have updated its firmware to the new version, and have tested this capability with Commander, please let me know. I'd also appreciate hearing from anyone who has used WinWarbler to transmit CW using the the new firmware on an IC-7600 or IC-7700. Aside from the short, non-changing macros like MyCall, ReplyCQ and EndQSO (which I never change), I created a subdirectory named dx4w804\macros, and within that subdirectory I placed text files with long or often-edited macros - names like FL_CW_bragsheet.txt and FK_RTTY_intro.txt and FK_PSK_callcq.txt. Then, in the CFG macro definitions, I call those text files with the corresponding macro string: i.e. Intro|%f..\macros\FK_RTTY_Intro% It's a bit of a kludge, but has worked for me for many years. Re: [Dx4win] Beyond Sync - has anyone tried it?
Syncback does both. You can select the source, destination and whether timed or in real-time. I have Syncback keeping an eye on my D4W/save directory. It backs up any file in that directory as soon as it changes (in real-time), it backs up the entire /save directory daily (timed) and my entire D4W directory weekly (timed). You tell it what you want backed up, where it is to go and the conditions under which it should be done. I have all my backups written to a networked RAID-1 drive in another part of the house. [Dx4win] Automatic File Backup
Over the years I have been a very satisfied user of Iomega's Automatic Backup software. Re: [Dx4win] Automatic File Backup
Thanks, Mel. I will checkout SyncBackSE. The thing I liked about the Iomega package was it would automatically detect in real-time when a file was modified and then back it up even if it was still open. It also gave you the option of how many revisions to keep before deleting the oldest ones. I've been Googling the subject and found several $50-$60 packages. I don't mind paying a fair price for a good product, I was just curious what other D4W users were using. Thanks for the referral. Dick At 01:38 PM 5/23/2010, Mel wrote: I use SyncBackSE. CQ Magazine doesn't accept LOTW confirmations for their WAZ award, so D4W simply marks it as Worked. I don't recall such, but then I don't recall near what I used to I just noticed this when cleaning up the database for the end of the year. Running version 8.03. I have several QSOs where a LoTW confirmation is the only confirmation of a particular zone on a particular band - mostly 160 and 6. Even though the QSO is marked as confirmed via LoTW in my log, the zone shows W (or M in a couple). I've gone to the trouble of looking each Q up in my LoTW account, and the other station, in every case, has included his zone. Manually setting the Cfnm via QSL box to Y sets the zone as confirmed. Then, to test this further, I found 3 zones where I had both QSL and LoTW confirmations (and the zone marked as C). In all three of those, changing the QSL rcvd to N (and having the LoTW Cfnm still = Y) changed the band/zone box from C to W or M. In other words, it appears that a confirmation from LoTW is not setting the band/zone to confirmed. I am not seeing any setting that might affect this, but perhaps that's right in front of my face. Or, perhaps this is a bug? Just reporting it, more than anything. I can get around it by manually setting the QSL rcvd to Y - but obviously shouldn't have to do that 73 - and Happy New Year to the group! As someone else mentioned, the beam width of most HF antennas is so broad you can get close enough by eye balling relative to the geography around you. If for some reason you actually require accurate headings within a few degrees (such as multi-element UHF or microwave arrays with beam widths of only a few degrees) then the determination of accurate headings becomes an interesting exercise. I am sure that D4W's headings are mathematically accurate relative to the geographic north pole. Aligning your antennas with anything close to that kind of accuracy is left as an exercise for the reader. :) Dick -- Dick Flanagan K7VC d...@k7vc.com __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] DXCC Award Question
I have a very basic question on how DXCC awards are tracked. Let's take a very simple example. I have confirmed SSB contacts with Morocco (MO) on 9 DXCC bands. When I look up my DXCC credits for MO, I see I have credit for Mixed, Phone and 9 bands. When I go to D4W I find the nine QSOs. Each of those nine QSOs has: DXCC Mixed Checked DXCC Band Checked DXCC Mode Checked Is that correct? My question centers around the Mixed status. Should all nine QSOs have Mixed Checked or only one of them? If only one, which one? Someone I respect has told me that for each country, only one QSO can count for Mixed credit. If true, is it the same for Mode credit? I guess the question is should D4W reflect each QSO that qualifies for Mixed credit or only the ones that actually were accepted for Mixed credit? I have over 1500 confirmed QSOs that qualify for Mixed credit, but only a 320 Mixed Country count. Should I have 1500 QSOs marked DXCC Mixed Credit or only 320 of them? Just when you think you know all the answers, you get old and forget the questions! :( Dick -- Dick Flanagan K7VC d...@k7vc.com __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Reflector options
The Mailman reflector system does not provide that capability. Mailman manages an e-mail system dedicated to one primary topic (in this case, DX4WIN), while the other Internet forums you describe are designed to support multiple topics in more of an on-line environment. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses. While there might be thread-oriented e-mail clients out there, I am not personally familiar with them. Mailman just doesn't go there. Sorry. However, I'd like to receive messages in my mailbox which concern all answers to my questions in a thread I created or in which i jumped-in by sending my comments. I do not find such a possibility in the Options list. Is it possible to introduce such a feature? Many Internet Forums offer possibility to chose if wishing or not to receive mailbox messages related to the message sent to the Forum. 73, Radi F6GNZ -- Dick Flanagan K7VC d...@k7vc.com __ Dx4win mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Dx4win@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
