Once an option has been installed, use the associated CONFIG menu entry to enable it (see list below). Then turn the K3 off and turn it back on. This allows the K3 to find and test the module. • KAT3 ATU module: set KAT3 to BYP. • KBPF3 general-coverage band-pass filter module: set KBPF3 to NOR (if you’re installing a KBPF3 on the sub receiver, tap SUB while in the menu entry). • KXV3 RF I/O module: set KXV3 to NOR. • KRX3 sub receiver: set KRX3 to NOR-ANTx where x is your selected wiring for the sub receiver’s auxiliary antenna (1 = unused KAT3 ATU antenna, 2 = AUX RF jack, 3 = AUX RF in parallel with the RX ANT IN jack on the KXV3). For details on sub receiver antenna sources, see pg. 22. You may also need to set up crystal filters for the sub receiver. • KDVR3 voice recorder: set KDVR3 to NOR. • KPA3 amplifier module: set the PA MODE menu entry to PA NOR. [Elecraft] K3 #857 on the air
The kit arrived Friday and I spent most of Saturday building it (after running down to Radio Shack to get an ESD wrist-strap and anti-static mat package -- built a lot of stuff without ever using those items, but I wasn't going to take any chances with my new K3.) Completed and tested the 10W kit on Saturday and installed/tested the 100W PA on Sunday. Everything is working fine so far. No problems during construction -- panels fit fine, negligible button flex, etc. All calibrations were successful, though I had to go the very lowest setting of WMTR HP (10) to get the external meters (an LP-100A and a Nye RF Power Monitor) to read 50W. Anyone else have to go that low? I have a few suggestions to send to Elecraft on building the kit, but the only important one is that maybe the KBPF3 should be installed before the PA shield to make it easier to see the pins and sockets mating. Otherwise, the kit is extremely well thought-out and the instructions are excellent. I haven't had this much fun since Heath went out of business. My first impression, as a long-time user and beta tester of that *other* SDR, is that the K3 is a terrific product. The design and construction are first-rate. With one exception (on which I'll make another post), the ergonomics are excellent. It'll take some time to gauge the performance, but early indications are that it's going to great. Can't wait to use this baby in a serious contest effort. 73, Dick WC1M ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. That should provide a strong example of what FCC and NTIA consider to be the maximum bandwidth necessary for single sideband operation in amateur allocations. -- Absolutely right Joe! But communications is only one part of the purpose for the Amateur service. Amateur Radio is basically an experimenters medium and, the Amateur part means that the experimentation is not necessarily with a stated purpose. The purpose for putting a signal on the air is whatever interests the individual that falls within the rules. That's why the rules are very, very broad. The idea is to allow the greatest possible range of activities on the bands. 60 meters is *not* a Ham Band. They are non-Amateur frequencies controlled by a whole different set of rules. Amateurs are allowed to use those frequencies only if they comply with those rules. That does not suggest that those rules should apply to the Amateur bands. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FM filter required for full AM receive width
Just to pass the time I used a wire to link across an unused filter position (with a series 0.1u DC blocking capacitor), adjusted the filter bandwidth to 8kHz, and listened to AM broadcast stations. Quite a respectable performance, much better than with a 2.7kHz filter. Now I know that it is worth making even a fairly loose LC filter just for occasional AM reception. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Mon, 05 May 2008 20:25:59 +0100, David Woolley (E.L) wrote: Jerry Flanders wrote: for SWL. The whole point of the exercise is to use wide filters, so, assuming that the interference is from a carrier and appears in the demodulated audio, the image can be 25 (5kHz audio) to 20kHz (10kHz audio) away from the carrier (20 and 10kHz from the passband edge). If the interference is from an audio component at the extreme of the bandwidth and the transmit is the same as the receive bandwidth, the carrier can be 20 to 10kHz away (although in the latter case would have other problems). In practice, I would expect the carrier to get past a weak filter better than an extreme sideband frequency. Note this means that if the signals are trying to reproduce audio up to 10kHz, the adjacent channel will be an issue. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] New Firmware AM FM Issues
Hi Folks, A couple of observations on the new Firmware. AM 1 Before the new Firmware, the AM carrier would not go above 5 watts. Now full power gives a carrier powe of 12 watts, which immediately falls to 5 watts - as it should. Once this has happened, subsequent transmissions remain at 5 watts carrier. 2 G0HNW reported that on tuning a very strong AM signal (ie Medium wave broadcast) produced a beat note - like the BFO is on in SSB mode. I can confirm I have this effect also. FM I tried this on 80M yesterday and had reports of low audio / deviation. I can't verify the deviation because I can't measure it. The audio level in the monitor is very low. This is with full mic gain and the mic set to high gain. It would be useful to be able to use the compressor in the FM mode. Hope this helps. 73 John G3YPZ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Connecting the K3 to a PW-1
Hi, I have been using my K3 and PW-1 together. I use a Microham Band Decoder as the interface for automatic band switching and also switch bands on my SteppIR. With the latest firmware upgrades I only need to set the K3 for a little over 20 watts to get a KW out of the PW-1 on SSB. I use an Array Solutions PowerMaster wattmeter which I have programmed to shut down the keying line to the PW-1 if I exceed 1100 watts output. Without a negative ALC protection voltage for the K3, which as we know requires the oddball positive voltage, you have to make sure to be watchful of your drive power. I have had correspondence with ICOM tech support ref overdiriving the PW-1 should I accidentally pump 100 watts into it. They said it should not damage it but recommend using ALC and keeping drive levels to enable 1000 watts output. Being adventurous I pumped 100 watts into the PW-1, for a short duration, and got over 1400 watts output on the wattmeter. There was no damage and the cooling fans kicked in quickly. Feel free to contact me off group if you plan on using them together with a band decoder and I will fill you in on my settings and the quirks. 73's Mike WA8EBM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)
* SSB TRANSMIT BANDPASS EXTENDED AT LOW END. Improvement is about 2 dB at 300 Hz, 3 dB at 200 Hz, and 6 dB at 100 Hz. Can this be made optional? Excess LF response only wastes power at low frequencies and occupies excess bandwidth. We could add a menu entry for this -- it's on the list. Meanwhile, the low end is rolled off a bit in hardware, too, so in practice I don't think you'll have any problems with this. Hi. At what frequencies are the low end rolled off in hardware ? I think it should be as flat as possible and then rolled off by the microphone (low-cut switc etc.) or the TX eq. The TEN-TEC Omni VII for instance has a menu for TX roll-off (70-300Hz). Adding this will be a fine way for users to set the TX roll-off to the point they want. The only thing one must remember with the Omni VII is that if you set the TX bandwidth to 2400 Hz and the TX roll-off to 70Hz it will sound too muddy. Then one must move the TX roll-off to around 200Hz to cut off the low end. This also add's the 200Hz you set in the TX roll-off to the upper side of the passband (moving it from 2470Hz to 2600Hz). This way the TX bandwidth is still 2400 Hz, and the TX frequency passband are 200Hz - 2600Hz. Alternativly, one can have one single SSB TX bandwidth menu who cuts off at specified frequencies: 2400 Hz : 300 - 2700 Hz 2600 Hz : 200 - 2800 Hz (default?) 2800 Hz : 200 - 3000 Hz 3000 Hz : 100 - 3100 Hz (requires 6kHz IF filter) 3500 Hz : 70 - 3570 Hz (requires 6kHz IF filter) 4000 Hz : 50 - 4050 Hz (requires 6kHz IF filter) This is maybe easier and more user friendly as it cuts off the low end as well, and it's easier to get a good sound without adjusting several menu's. Having a bit more low end and more bandwidth is fine when using 10m or 6m locally for ragchew on a quiet band. Before I add my two-cents, has Elecraft committed to any improvements in this area? 73, Dick WC1M I took the advice of one of our loyal contributors as I have copied below. Works wonderfully for me. I have memories set for DX beacons as well. Windy KM5Q K3 #764 Santa Fe, NM = From: DOUGLAS ZWIEBEL [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: March 10, 2008 6:24:41 PM MDT To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3: remembering filters per mode, etc I think it might be valuable to share how some of us (but not ALL of us!) set up our K3's. You can really do a lot of neat things in terms of setting it up. Remember that the memories can store a TON of information per memory. Here is what I have done; maybe it will give some you a couple of ideas for YOUR approach. First, I loaded the keypad memories (0-9) as a sort of band switch. I borrowed (stole) from another user's idea which was posted here quite a while ago. It was clever and is worth repeating. For the Keypad #'s I did this (slightly different than what was originally suggested, but works for me). 1 = 10 meters 2 = 20 meters 3 = 30 meters 4 = 40 meters 5 = 15 meters (five and fifteen both start with the same sound...) 6 = 160 meters (emphasis on the 6 sound) 7 = 17 meters 8 = 80 meters 9 = 12 meters (so it's not perfect) 0 = 6 meters (which I don't have an antenna for, so I kept it out of the way) Now here's the trick. I made sure to set VFO A for CW with all of my favorite CW parameters (meter display = SWR and RF Power, filters = 500hz (what I have here), DSP BW = 400hz (what I like), VOX, QSK, AGC=F, etc. I set up VFO B for SSB, again with my favorite SSB parameters (meter display = CMP ALC), AGC = S, filter = 2.7 (what I have), DSP BW = 2.6, Shift = down a bit (how I set it up), HI/LO as I set it up, etc. This is done via filter modes I and II. I am not using Alt 1 and Alt 2 for my style, but you can. Don't forget to be on your favorite frequency for the mode you are selecting. I did this for EVERY band (key-pad number, as per above cheat sheet). So if I'm on 10m cw and want to go 15m cw, I tap MV, then tap 5 on the keypad, and I'm there! If I had wanted to go to SSB on 15, I'd do the same thing, but when done I would tap VFO A/B and I'm on SSB in the SSB portion of the band. If you operate mostly SSB, set them up so that VFO A has the SSB info. But now it gets even better (at least for me). The M1 = M4 memories also store all that stuff but on a per band basis. So, let say I'm on 15m. I put 21000 into VFO A and 21060 into VFO B (the latter being the QRP frequency). For each (both on CW), I set up the other parameters as I like for CW. I put that into M1. For M2, I set up for SSB. VFO A = the bottom of the phone band, along with all my favorite SSB settings. I set VFO B for somewhere higher in the band, say 21.350, again with all my favorite SSB parameters, including filters, shift, etc. For M3, I set up for RTTY. I'm not a big RTTY type, so basically I have a discrete frequency somewhere where the RTTY guys seem to hang out, set the MODE for FSK D, decoder ON, CWT=ON, etc. and when I want to see some RYRYRYRY, I just M3. So once I get to 15m using my keypad band switch, I can zero in on where I want to be using M1 - M4. Do this on every band. This may not be the best way for you, but I like it! Kind of a neat trick. Right now, TX5C is the callsign of the Clipperton DxPedition. Over the last two days, they have been rock solid on fixed transmit frequencies (at least on cw) per band. It is trivial to plug those into the memories per band (say, M4). SPLIT is saved and I would pick something up 5 as a starting point. Or you might want to use the XIT instead. By the way, if you LOCK their transmit frequency, that appears to be SAVED also. Amazing. Prior to using LOCK on their transmit freq, I found myself thinking that I was tuning around for where I should transmit (in split) when I was actually on THEIR frequency (not a good idea, since I then lost where they were transmitting). So LOCKING the VFO on their transmit frequency completely prevents that from happening. Maybe this is what getting old is. LOL Doing all of this, I never use the MODE switch and BAND up/down. I haven't added up how many taps it takes to do it this way vs the other ways, but this is way is fun and I'm not navigating all of the front panel and having to spin the VFO like crazy or pushing RATE or COARSE buttons to get close to where I want to be. Hi Toby - Yes, I did turn the KPA3 on, but thanks for the hint. I should also add that all my filters have the correct offsets set (with - signs...), and I have the 2.7 KHz filter set as the transmit filter for all modes. [Elecraft] K3 Single Band SWR problem
Craig - I had a very similar problem. I was operating on 20 CW into my non-resonant antenna (SWR about 7:1) using the internal tuner. All of a sudden I had a high SWR. My Powermaster showed that the external antenna system hadn't changed. I was able to have the K3 ATU re-tune, and then everything was OK again. However, I laterr found tha my SWR was high on some of the high bands whne looking into a dummy load. It was 1.2:1 on 17 meters, about 1.5:1 on 15 meters, about 2:1 on 12 meters, and 1.5:1 on 10 meters. This occurred with the ATU bypassed on both A and B outputs. Fine on all other bands, including 6 meters. I stepped through the relay switching manually to make sure I could hear each click, and all relays seemed to be working fine. When I was unable to find any problems, Elecraft replaced the ATU and everything has been fine since. But this was very puzzling. If a ATU relay contact had failed so that a component was in-line all the time, I'd expect things to get worse as you went higher in frequency. - not peak and then get better again I also considered that maybe a MOV in the ATU had failed. But there are separate MOVs for A and B outputs. OF course, as long as the ATU would tune OK, I could continue to operate. But I could no longer set the power at 5- and 50-watts properly on 15-, 12-, and 10-meters.with the tuner bypassed. Anyway, replaceing the ATU fixed the problem for me, but I'd sure like to know what the problem was. Phil - AD5X My first real problem (or operator error?) with K3 SN 608 just occurred. I got on 20 CW with my usual antenna (a resonant dipole) and the K3 is showing a 2:1 SWR and folding back power. I bypass the tuner with this antenna since its SWR is in the 1.2 to 1.3 range. My external SWR meter shows the usual 1.3. If I engage the K3 tuner it will tune to a 1:1 indication on the K3 meter and register the requested output power, but the actual output power measured externally is in the range of 70 to 80 W for 100W on the K3 meter. Next I tried a known good dummy load and the K3 acts the same with it - indicates a 2 to 1 SWR. Interestingly, it works fine with the dummy load on all the other bands (shows 1.0 to 1 SWR) except 20. It has worked fine before on 20 with this same antenna and as far as I know nothing has changed. I'm running firmware version 1.78. Will welcome any ideas or suggestions Thanks ... I know this list is mainly for K3 owners. Still notice few postings for K2, so am hoping for some help. I am having a rather vexing time with Alignment Testing Phase 1. My problem is that all of the front-panel controls and display work as they should EXCEPT for the Menu/Edit button. The button press is making it to U2, can see the voltage change on pin 6. All the chip voltage checks seem normal. I have performed the master reset operation, it proceeds as expected but doesn't fix the problem. One additional behavior noted is that if the K2 rests overnight without power connected, then the Menu button is pushed immediately after power-up and initialization is completed ( 7.100 c on display ), the st L 40 appears. Usually this will only work once or twice, thereafter it stops working. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Alignment and Testing Part 1 Troubles
Curt, This list is for *Elecraft* owners, and those interested in any Elecraft gear. That includes the KX1, K1, K2, transverters, KRC2, the mini-modules and yes, the K3. Discussion about the K3 has filled the reflector contents of late, but there are others asking about the other products. Have you considered that you might have a bad pushbutton? Since you say all the other buttons work, that just might be the case. I would specifically ask if the XIT button works. How about the BAND+ and BAND- buttons? The MENU and XIT buttons share the same line to Front Panel U2 (pin 6) and RP1 pin 3 must be well soldered. In addition, consider that the MENU pushbutton may have a bad solder connection - the legs do not stick very far through the board. Try soldering the pushbutton from the top of the board. The fact that you can sometimes get it to work points to a bad solder connection rather than a firmware chip problem. Check the soldering at the points I mentioned above. 73, Don W3FPR Curt wrote: I know this list is mainly for K3 owners. Still notice few postings for K2, so am hoping for some help. From what I can determine, both the Icom PW-1 and the Yaesu Quadra (which I have) BOTH utilize the ALC circuit to protect the amp in oddball situations such as an antenna disconnect/intermittent/whatever. If you are going to run without the ALC, you are putting your expensive finals at risk. Wayne, we need your recommendations for a circuit to fix this please please please. Having actually blown up the output circuit of an amp when the antenna coax connector was intermittent (I was not using ALC then), I am gunshy about protective circuits. If you're having difficulties with the latest firmware upgrade, I'd like to ask that you first contact me directly ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) rather than downgrade. I'll work with our staff to try to quickly resolve your issues. Our full attention is on the firmware. We've had a few cases where the new FPF file didn't load properly. That's responsible for most of the anomalies reported. This is easily resolved with another firmware load, and I'll step you through it. If there are other issues, we need to correct them and re-release the firmware. We need your help gathering this data. One other general comment. A few of you have privately expressed concern that we're adding too many niche features, and that these might compromise basic CW/SSB/DATA performance. This is definitely not the case. The latest release improves all basic modes. But more important, the new features (such as being able to send CW while in SSB modes) have absolutely no impact when not used, and in fact must be specifically turned on in the menu. If you don't turn them on, you won't be able to use them, accidentally or intentionally. I look forward to working with you to make the K3 meet all of your expectations. [Elecraft] K3 ALC polarity fix
Most amps in common use provide a negative-going ALC voltage. And most rigs in common use are compatible with this. The K3, however, requires a positive-going voltage. According to the K3 FAQ at http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm#SignalArchitecture , Once ALC is working to our satisfaction, we'll provide simple interfacing information that will allow the use of negative control voltages (probably a resistive divider pulled up to a positive supply, or at most an op-amp circuit). The ALC appears to be working OK now. If this is correct, I would like Elecraft to give me the information to build the interface circuit. Whether or not someone on this list thinks that ALC is not necessary or not wise in the average ham station is not important to me at this time - the engineers at Yaesu do not agree with you concerning their Quadra amp. They tell me that I must connect ALC for emergency protection of the finals. Quoting from my Quadra's manual p4.: The ALC cable must be connected between the transceiver and VL-1000 to prevent overdrive of the amplifier, and especially to facilitate the proper operation of the protection circuitry if sudden antenna system problems should cause the SWR to rise to dangerous levels. [Elecraft] K3 Heavy hum after Upgrade
Hello, I did the 1.87 upgrade and today did the 1.88. I did not work any ssb after doing 1.87 but today saw some posts concerning ssb output to drive amps, etc. Sooo, I decided to check it out and found that I have heavy hum on the keying of my MH2. I am set for FP.L with biasI initially had the microHam MKset up with MH2 going into the back of the MK (has several snap on chokes from my O II days) and when keying the mike I without saying anything, I get heavy hum and 8 bars of ALC; CMP flickers with about 4 to 5 bars...MIC is set at 20 and CMP at 20 (worked ok in the past). With CMP at 0, I still get 7 bars of ALC just by keying the MH2. I can hear the hum when the MIC is anything above 3. I took the MK out of the circuit...disconnected from computer and exited the routerMH2 is plugged directly into front panel and all previous problems still exist...Suggestions? Is there a way to re-load 1.87 or even 1.86? 73 Tom CX7TT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re-visiting The K2
Hi All, It has been a long time since I built my K2 (#72). But it still is working like a champ! I started pondering the idea of having a 2nd K2 to leave at our summer location so I wouldn't have to haul an extra radio back and forth. Building another one could have been fun, but a friend of mine decided to part with his relatively new K2 in order to step up to a K3. Since he is an excellent builder, and the price was right, I took it off his hands. This K2 is relatively spartan, but it did have the SSB module and the 160 meter option. He had the ATU kit still in the package, so I bought that too. Adding DSP was very tempting, but I'm so impressed with the Datong filters (actually an analog filter, but it works bettter than just about any DSP outboard unit I've ever tried) I decided to just use one that I have. As I expected, the K2 works flawlessly, and probably better than my original unit, although I haven't put them side by side yet. I plan to do that though. That could be interesting, and also could determine which one stays home! I had forgotten how involved building the ATU module was. It's not that it is all that difficult, but there is a lot to the process. It took me a lot longer than the bag of parts suggests! But it all went together smoothly, and now it is installed and doing its job well. Elecraft ATU's are really a good add. I have a small complaint about the ATU installation. It is necessary to remove the K2's back panel, which also partially covers the bottom. This includes having to detach the power transistors, which is something of a problem. Those transistors are installed with thermal pads attached, and several small pieces of hardware. It's not a simple process detaching and re-attaching these transistors properly. The only reason you have to go through all of this is to install a 2 pin male connector at P6 on the RF board. I think that connector should be part of the K2's construction whether an ATU is definitely planned or not. It certainly would simplify later installation of the ATU, and the cost of the 2 pin connector has to be only a nominal amount. It just doesn't make much sense to me that you would not istall this part when you build the K2. There was only one instance when I thought I had a construction problem. That came during the Preliminary Tests procedures on P. 13 of the instructions. During the procedure where you check to make sure all the relays are functioning, I got a nice, clear clicking sound on everything but N1 and N2. But when I exited the menu, and then cycled between antenna 1 and antenna 2, the relays were clicking appropriately. Now they all click when I cycle through using the ATU menu setting. Not sure why this occurred, but both antenna positions are working fine now, and I don't see any problem around K17 and K18. Hopefully I haven't overlooked anything. So, now I will go do some A/B testing between the two K2's. They sound very similar to my ear. Interestingly, both seem to max out around 12 watts. They both are a bit anemic on audio output, but it is adequate. QSK is superb, and I've gotten very nice audio reports. The K2 was an excellent radio in 1999, and it still is today. Heck, I'm ready for SO2R operation! Dave W7AQK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Re: Upgrade Firmware/ Revert back
The upgrade problem was solved thanks to Wayne. Several of the new features seem to be working. There are so many new bells that I will need several days to check thru them. Basically I did two things for a successful upgrade. I suspected a problem going thru the MKII with No Radio and No Polling. So I switched to another USB to serial interface. That was one thing. The other was I deleted all of the upgrade files (possible corruption??) and downloaded new files to transfer with the K3 Utility. I uploaded the 1.88/1.70 set and re did the VCO CAL. It runs from 1 to 50 at about a second per count. then a variable speed from 50+ to 127+. No errors on Tech MD exit or on the next power cycle. It works like a charm now and tickled pink with the K3 again. Regards and again thanks to Wayne for his help. Ed KE3D -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. [Elecraft] K3: AM Reception
I have run a number of tests on my K3 regarding low-level BFO-like whistles reported during AM reception. Signals less than -16 dBm (57 dB over S9) do not exhibit this behavior, but signals above this strength do. For the time being, if you are listening to an AM station that is this huge, please be sure PRE is OFF and ATT is ON. In my case, the low-level heterodyne did not appear until the signal at the antenna jack was at -6 dBm (S9 + 67 dB). Further, if the K3 is tuned to the station's carrier frequency, the low-level heterodyne becomes inaudible. If the signal is stronger than this, disconnect your antenna! You should still be able to hear the station :-) Seriously, we'll investigate further to see what can be done about this. But in the meantime, please understand that only huge signals exhibit the symptom, and then only if you are not tuned to the station's carrier frequency. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3; SWL Filters
I don't believe it's a zero-sum proposition to design an HF receiver that performs optimally on all bands and modes. Any feature that could possibly be added to the K3 to make it a killer SWL receiver should have no ill effect on it's ham-band performance at all. Paul WW2PT Ken-99 wrote: I wonder if all changes for SWL shouldn't be reserved only for the second receiver. I want to be sure that a world class transceiver designed for HAM operation does not get screwed up by creeping specs from changes being made to change it into something else. [Elecraft] Something happened behind my back!
My K3 will not turn on. It was semi-alive last night. When I press the Power button, the power supply meter reads about 2 amps and its lighted meter glow brighter, but the K3 front panel lies lifeless. I have been troubleshooting what appears to be a problem: when attempting to calibrate the KSYN3 I repeatedly got VFO A: E5, VFO B: ERR VCO at the test's conclusion. Pushing ahead I attempted to perform the cal for KREF3 using the beat frequency method, but could not hear any on the air signal that were recognizable. Instead there were various signals roaming across the bandwidth. My first thought was to use a better antenna, but later pulled the KSYN3 to check for lead clearance and proper mating of the connector. All seemed ok, but the radio wouldn't work. So I left it still giving me VCO errors and went to bed. Just getting home I found the condition I mentioned above. I'm not sure which direction to take, but I think I'll back off and watch baseball before going through the schematics. ttfn -- 73, Dick ka1oz Middleborough, MA K3/100(Kit) SN 000859 Titan-DX (to come) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Internal Bluetooth Interface Integration Addon
Hi, I finally did another project on my K2 #4130. I was tired of using a serial cable for just basic control of my K2 with Hamradio Deluxe. I integrated an internal bluetooth interface bound to the KIO2. So, I am still able to use the KIO2 as usual OR via bluetooth connection with my CF-30 laptop. Since I don't have the internal battery installed in my K2, I used the ON/OFF switch for other purpose. to activate or desactivate the internal bluetooth feature inside my K2. So if I don't need the bluetooth interface and want to save about 50-70 mA I have just to turn to OFF position and that's it !! The interface is powered from the 5V line on the control board. That way, I can still monitor how current it takes by switching ON and OFF the interface and look at the K2 internal meter display. This interface is fully compatible with all software... including Hamradio Deluxe. A good thing also is Windows recognize the interface as a «remote control» interface using serial protocol.. And I also include my own brand and name inside interface firmware. Windows always see this piece of hardware. «ELECRAFT K2 SN:4130» If you want to take a sneek peek at my pictures just click the link below http://www.flickr.com/photos/va2ss The integration was very straight foward. Re: [Elecraft] Stereo speakers for k3
Pick up a Y 1/8 stereo adapter at Radio Shack and plug it into the back of the K3 (speaker jack). Replace both speaker plugs with stereo types and solder one of the speaker's hot lead to the tip of one plug and to the other plug's ring for the other speaker. This is the most expensive and labor consuming method. The other method is to take a 1/8 stereo patch cable and chop off the connector on one end then chop off the connectors on both speakers and wire all of this together so that each speaker is connected to the appropriate channel. Be sure to observe polarity and there is no guarantee that the speakers are wired the same inside so you might want to remove the back and take a look. A note on speaker placement: The MFJ-281 should be placed directly on top the desk, below ear level, not on a shelf. Also, you will see a huge DB increase by placing the speaker against a solid object such as a wall etc. Location makes a huge difference. [Elecraft] Help with new K3
At long last my new K3 arrived today. Ordered 10/29/07, Katiegram on 4/9 and it arrived May 6, 2008. It is an assembled radio. I have just begun to set it up for operation. But I have run into an early problem. I'm sure it's probably my fault. I purchased a pro-set with the radio. Unfortunately, I get no output to the headphones when I plug it into the rear phone jack or with the front jack using an adapter. Furthermore, when the mike was plugged in it appeared that something was shorted because the transmit light came on and would not turn off. When I unplugged the mike the transmit light was not on. I'm not sure that I turned the bias on before I plugged in the mike. I have since turned the bias on but have not yet rechecked it. When the phones are inserted in the rear phone jack the speaker goes off but there is no sound in the headphones. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what stupid mistake I'm probably making? [Elecraft] More on K3 trouble
Well, since the first message I tried my other proset which I use for my FT 1000D. I noticed that it had a stereo 3.5 mm stereo plug on it which I use through a 1/4 inch adaptor. It worked fine on the K3! So I wonder if the proset which came with the K3 which has a mono 3.5 plug could be the problem? If so, is there a solution? I notice the package info said it was for the K2. Since the K2 does not have stereo as I recall it would make sense to have a mono plug on it. But does it work with the K3 which does have stereo capabilities? Bruce-W8FU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: K3 Band Changing using Memories
Windy K5MQ wrote: I took the advice of one of our loyal contributors as I have copied below. Works wonderfully for me. Ah! That's what I was looking for. I need a way to get to each band without scrolling through all the bands because 1) it's quicker when contesting, and 2) I have a software-driven antenna switching and tuning system that follows the rig frequency. When scrolling through bands on the K3, it unnecessarily throws switches and sends tuning commands to my 3-stack of 4-el SteppIRs, Acom amp, etc. Also, I didn't like having 60m included in the order (had to patch my software to ignore that band...) The keypad memory trick solves the problem nicely. Personally, I find it more intuitive to load the keypad memories in the same layout as most modern amateur rigs: 160/80/40, 30/20/17, 15/12/10. I know that order by heart. In fact, the labels on all modern rigs are so small and my eyes are getting so old that I don't bother to read the keys anymore -- I know which band is which by the relative positions of the keys. Glad I didn't shoot my mouth off. Thanks for the tip, Windy. I have another questions about band changes, which I'll post separately. 73, Dick WC1M ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 ham vs general band changes
The K3 manual says the Band switch scrolls through the ham bands. But if I enter a general coverage frequency, say 11.000, it becomes the setting of the nearest ham band. So, when I'm scrolling, I see 7.000, 11.000, 14.000, etc. I have to re-enter 10.100 to get 30m to the right setting. 11.000 isn't a ham band frequency, so IMHO it shouldn't be stored in the scrolling order for the ham bands. I think it would be an improvement to have a General Mode (On/Off) or Ham Mode (On/Off) menu entry that can be programmed into one of the function keys. In Ham mode, the Band switch would be limited to a configurable set of Ham-only bands. In General mode, the Band button would be 1 MHz up or down. If the user enters a Ham or General frequency, the mode could switch automatically. Does this make sense? 73, Dick WC1M ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Another clumsy project from me Any comment are welcome.
