[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, It was a wonderful week to cut, split, and stack wood. The biting flies were few and the sun was out a little each day. Today that has changed. Clouds came in from the north, the wind kicked up, and the temperature dropped again. The fire feels good; you can ask Sam - fire warden. Now I have about two months worth of wood prepared for next winter. It will dry rapidly because this is from the tree I topped about two years ago. It is still rooted but lying on its side. Looks like I will get about four months worth of wood out of one tree! I am currently listening on 40 meters. It is much quieter than it has been for a long time. Hopefully this will hold for tomorrow. Twenty meters was good a few days ago until just before dusk. Then it went away. We held an ARES exercise on Thursday with 2m FM simplex. Conditions were odd because there was QSB. I had never heard 2 meters like this before. Part of the exercise was to quote signal reports in both directions. During a contact strength would vary greatly so often the reports were in ranges instead of discrete numbers. Please join us tomorrow evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 7 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay warm, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] E00005 err vco sub
Ron, Does your K3 have the subreceiver installed? I do not think they have shipped yet because they are waiting for the shields (they will go out to the field testers quite soon). - so since you cannot have the sub-receiver installed, to see an error for the sub-receiver VFO is natural and to be expected. 73, Don W3FPR Ron Spencer wrote: Trying to calibrate my newly finished K3. Me too! No, I was not at Dayton last year and, unfortunately, won't make it this year either... Like many... I based my decision to plunk down a deposit for a K3 on the superb reputation enjoyed by Elecraft. But, unlike a lot of folks, I had never owned anything from Elecraft before. Best decision I've ever made. So... To Eric and Wayne... and Lyle and Lisa.. and everyone at Aptos.. field testers, too. Thanks! [Elecraft] K3 cheap mic
I have been testing a few mics today and several stations have gone out of their way to report how excellent this cheap headset sounds. In fact, one guy said it sounded better than a Heil PR40. I worked with a local ham to adjust the TX EQ. +3db of #5 and +6db of #6 were added and the CMP set at 18. I keep the headset plugged into the rear mic and headphone jack. In the menu, I set SPKR+PH to Yes. I'm using an amplified speaker system which has it's own volume control. When using the headset, I simply turn down the speake volume. I use a foot switch plugged into the PTT jack on the rear of the K3. Note that these also have an in-line volume and mute control. Very handy! Here's the link to Cyber Acoustics AC-400. $15 http://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Acoustics-AC-400-Stereo-Headset/dp/B6HR0L I also found Them for $7 here: http://www.wolfcamera.com/product/EP5142996.htm?utm_medium=productsearch&utm_source=google Steve Ellington [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Used in transverter mode with 1,5mW output to DB6NT 2m and 23cm transverter chain. Still learning, what was found that if I try to change something in XVx menus then when going out of menu there is mode change and frq change (more then offset, it jumped 250kc down if I remember). This can cause some problems if changes are made during standard operation (for example XVx OFS setting). No time to study this more. Maybe somebody else has some more experience and I am doing some stupid things here:-) Compared to IC-910 used before there is advantage of variable bandwith and shift, also XIT setting is comfortable (for Doppler compensation). No discussion about TX noise and the others... What is good on IC-910 it is ATT level settings (for 2m/70cm input) but it is not issue as I have some external 1 - 10dB attenutor to apply to RX channel from transvertor to my K3. Re: [Elecraft] Fan Panel Flipped???
Likewise with the KPA3 option kit I recently received. There is little difference in the texture of both sides. The finish does have a slight crackle appearance to it, but it is very slight. Does this really make a difference? I assume the 'troublesome' one has a coat of finish on both sides (if not, I take that statement back and you should ask for a new plate). If there is a bit more of a crackle finish on one side vs. the other side, I can't see if it would make any real difference, black is black, and I don't look that hard at the rear of my K3 nor the inside. The paint shop likely just sprayed one side a bit longer than the other side, and I would think there is nothing more serious to it. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My SN31 doesn't exhibit a noticeable difference between inner surface finish and outer surface finish. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - A complete BAND SWITCHING scheme using 33 memories
Don I was thinking of an application similar to Kenwood's ARCP-480 as part of the K3 Utility. ARCP-480 provides PC access to all menu settings in the TS-480, allowing such things as custom filter configuration and memory entry. Once you have it configured on your screen, you just dump it into the 480 and your're done. [Elecraft] K3 ERR TXG message on most bands
I have K3/100 #757 using firmware 1.88 MCU and 1.70 DSP. When trying the Low-Power (5W) Transmitter Gain Calibration, it works on 80 and 20 meters, but on all other bands I get an "ERR TXG" message. The Synthesizer Calibration and Reference Oscillator Calibration (using WWV zero beat) run OK. I have checked that I have my two filters (500 and 2.7) setup properly. I have been thru the filter bandwidth, freq center, receive filter enables, and transmit filter selections several times. Re: [Elecraft] Fan Panel Flipped???
I installed a KPA3 yesterday and noticed the same thing. The final finish is on the side with the countersunk screw holes. I figured that the difference in finish between the two sides was subtle and that I wouldn't pay any attention to it once the fans were in place and on the back of the rig. Thats what I meant the side facing out has machining marks around the various screw holes. The side facing inside has no such marks. Back to the subject -- I've received 6 thank-you notes so far for the band switching scheme I described. I relay the thanks to Douglas, Rick and others who initiated this. I welcome feedback or suggestions from users, on or off-list. I may then write a revised "how-to" document. When the K3 Utility (or other system) provides computer download to the radio's memories, we'll have a fine management tool. Meanwhile, just use the radio's entry system. You'll get good at it. It's really only 23 memories. My mistake -- it's #10-33 (plus optional duplication onto the quick buttons). Enjoy! [Elecraft] Power output measurement
I've seen lots of posts regarding measuring output power. The technique I've used for years is simple and effective, all it requires is an oscilloscope. It doesn't have to be a top of the range high frequency instrument either, provided the DC scale is reasonably accurate virtually any scope will do, all that is required is to build a very simple diode probe and use a calculator to work out what the power is across a 50 Ohm load. Have a look at this site from Adam Farson, VA7OJ/AB4OJ, Fig 3 shows the simple diode probe connected to a digital multimeter (DMM), in place of the DMM use the scope. http://www.ab4oj.com/pwrmeas.html If you are measuring higher power levels use the 10:1 attenuator as in Fig 2. Just speak into the mic and watch the peaks, it's far more accurate than any meter can possibly be and far cheaper, there are plenty of surplus scopes for sale. Once you've used an oscilloscope you wonder how on earth you managed without one ;-) 73 Paul G4LNA. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Power-output-measurement-tp17165068p17165068.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] OT: FL-2100Z input SWR
David, I had a fl2100z for years and just sold it a few weeks ago to make room for a K3. As Don said, the input is fixed but there is another thing that gives you the higher SWR: feedback form the tuned anode circuit. There is a neutrodynisation capacitor for that. It is supposed to neutralize the feedback. In your case, you'll probably see the SWR going up and down when you tune the Amp. The capacitor is not properly set then. The neutralizing capacitor must be set that there is little change in SWR when you tune. For the rest: use the auto tune of the transceiver. Done that for years and worked fb. 73 Arie PA3A -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Namens David Walker Verzonden: zaterdag 10 mei 2008 15:03 Aan: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Onderwerp: [Elecraft] OT: FL-2100Z input SWR Hi folks, I have decided to try you guys on this reflector for help as a last DIY resort. Re: [Elecraft] OT: FL-2100Z input SWR
Dave, That amp has a tuned input circuit. It may need some tuning or re-design. The FL-2100 was designed to be 'good enough' to be driven with the vacuum tube exciters of similar vintage. Most of those exciters could be tuned to tolerate a 3:1 or even greater SWR, so there was no need to design the amp input circuit to be close to 50 ohms resistive. As a result, some re-design or tweaking of the input components should make it usable with solid state transceivers. 73, Don W3FPR David Walker wrote: Hi folks, I have decided to try you guys on this reflector for help as a last DIY resort. Re: [Elecraft] Think About This
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Exactly David. Name another modern Ham Radio transceiver that will switch 120V AC relays in an amp WITHOUT using a low DC relay. Maybe it's just the way email comes across but the tone around here has been getting a little "demanding" for lack of a better term. I see "suggestions" like "my does it this way, why did Elecraft do it that way, please change it back to this way." Simple solution, if your does it the way you think it should be done by all means use your . Aye, but there's the rub, your is deaf as a post compared to the K3. I had to chuckle during the "AM wars". Doesn't anybody else think it's just slightly ridiculous trying to make an 8 pound, solid state, SDR transceiver sound like a 250lb Globe King 500C while on AM? Sit back and ponder that. There also seems to be a large number of firmware programming specialists on this reflector. As I'm typing this there are about 30 or so messages in my K3 folder. I guarantee one of them will contain the words "should be an easy thing to do in firmware". NO! If it was an easy thing to do everybody would be doing it. BTW, why haven't some of these "experts" started their own radio companies? Seems to me they're like most Ham Radio clubs. Someone will stand up with a great idea, everybody is in favor of it, best thing since sliced bread, "this will change ham radio forever" type stuff. When it comes time to actually do real work on the project the noise from the crickets chirping is deafening. Nary a soul to be found. Elecraft should concentrate on making the K3 the best they can and how they envisioned it. It's quickly turning into a horse designed by committee. - -- R. Re: [Elecraft] Think About This
U.Dave Last I checked, Elecraft was in business to make a profit, and while chatting with Eric at the Orlando Hamcation this year, he mentioned that they were, in fact, profitable, with no debt. These are good things! They should make a profit for their efforts. However, they experienced business people, and Elecraft is not the first business they've run. They are in fact in control of the means of production - including firmware updates, and can chose where to draw the "lines in the sand" (I hate that cliche) with respect to what work item they schedule for action. Nobody's taking advantage of them. Actually, I could argue the exact opposite: if anyone's been taking advantage, it's Elecraft of their customers. See "Long Wait Times", "Free Loans (aka Deposits)", "Immature Firmware", and "Missing Advertised (STILL!) Functionality After One Year On The Market". 'Nuff said. I'm going to put on my climbing harness, and go do some antenna work. It's going to be 95F down here in Florida today - just right for hanging off a 140' tower. ;-) 73, Steve NN4X On Sat, May 10, 2008 at 7:59 AM, David Robertson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hello Elecrafters. > > Did you ever stop and think about what your doing when complaining about > something with your K3. [Elecraft] Think About This
Hello Elecrafters. Did you ever stop and think about what your doing when complaining about something with your K3. Here is a little company made up of very dedicated people who love ham radio and are successfully releasing one of the best rigs ever. This company stands poised to try to satisfy all their customers demands. Here we are, in some ways, taking advantage of this company by complaining about not being able to operate a linear with a 110 volt AC switching voltage for keying! What do you want the Elecraft people to do, stand on their head. I have never seen an equipment vendor provide as much customer support that Elecraft does. There are limits and we are Radio Amateurs. We are suppose to be able to either perform some simple modifications or have a friend help you. I fully appreciate the fact that some of us are not technically endowed but the vendor cannot be responsible for every situation. When a vendor puts out a specification, he is only legally responsible to that spec. Elecraft had long since past this goal. If you buy an ICOM product and complain about their linear keying delay guess what, you live with it. All I am saying is appreciate what a good thing you have here when dealing with Elecraft. [Elecraft] K3 Variable amp keying delay >>not long enough!!??
The ubiquitous Ameritron non-QSK amplifiers use open frame relays that (according to the instruction manuals) take approximately 15 ms to change states. I've been switching my AL-80B with a PTT signal generated by a microHam CW Keyer, with the PTT lead time set for 18-20 ms. It seems to me the 20 ms maximum delay for the K3 was a pretty good choice. 73, Chuck Guenther NI0C K2/10 s/n 5853 K3/100 coming soon ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
