[Elecraft] P3 shipping update for the curious

2010-09-04 Thread Stephen Prior
Elecraft are clearly getting their backlog sorted well. I ordered a P3 on
August 23rd and just received advice of shipping within the next 7 to 10
days. Now to find room for it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 microKeyer 2 setup

2010-09-04 Thread Bill Henderson

Hi

Part 2

I'm very nearly there thanks to the help given so far.

(i) I managed to get through the 6 - Setting Audio Levels to point 8 on
page 46. The next step, adjusting the Balance, has no effect on my ALC
levels. Am I right to assume that I can ignore this for the the K3?

I've done nothing about the DVK tab as I don't plan on using it just now.

(ii) I use Winwarbler in DXLabs for PSK and RTTY. I've set this up for FSK.
Should I be using the PSK D and FSK D settings on the K3?

(iii) When I run a macro (in Winwarbler) on FSK it puts the K3 into
transmit, sends the message and puts the K3 back into receive. However, when
on PSK the same macro is sent okay but at the end of the macro the
microKeyer 2 clicks but the K3 stays in transmit. What am I doing wrong?

Please help

Enjoy the build, and you can be rightfully proud of the results.

I can offer one assist - the varactor characteristics have changed from
the time the manual was written, so the variable filter settings for the
SSB filters indicated in the manual are no longer valid - the more
narrow CW settings are OK. For instance, a filter width as indicated by
the K2 display of 2.00 kHz may actually be 3 kHz or more. The best
solution to this problem is to use Spectrogram (or similar) to measure
the actual passband width. Refer to my website (www.w3fpr.com) article
dealing with K2 Dial Calibration for information about how the set up
and use Spectrogram to set the K2 filters.

[Elecraft] VCO control voltage range

2010-09-04 Thread KA1YMX

I am trying to adjust the VCO control voltage on the RF board and having an
issue. When the VFO is set to 3500 khz the voltage is around 1.5vdc but the
voltage goes above 7.5vdc around 4500khz. I checked c71-c74, and d21-d26 and
all are the correct parts. I checked T5 for the proper number of turns, 16
red and 4 green and the windings soldered to the correct hole. The book
states I need 16 turns red and 4 green but figures 6-16 and 6-17 both have
14 turns red and 4 green. Which is correct? Is there anything else I can
check?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 microKeyer 2 setup

2010-09-04 Thread Richard Ferch
Bill,

Your point (i) refers to the microKeyer II manual; I can't help you there.

Re (ii), you cannot use PSK D with WinWarbler or most other software. For
PSK31 and most other sound card digital modes, you should use DATA A. For
RTTY, you can use either FSK D or AFSK A; both work equally well.

Re (iii), how are you doing PTT? There have been numerous reports of K3s
getting hung up in transmit at the end of messages, coming from people who
had configured their software to use both software PTT and hardware PTT in
parallel. To avoid this problem, you should not use software PTT unless
there is no hardware method available. There are several ways of
triggering hardware PTT from WinWarbler/Commander via the mK II, so
software PTT is unnecessary with this combination. You can turn software
PTT off in Commander by checking the Suppress CAT box under the General
tab in Commander's Configuration window.

There is more guidance on configuring WinWarbler and Commander for digital
modes on the K3 at http://www.dxlabsuite.com/dxlabwiki/K3PSKRTTY .

I hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Assembly

2010-09-04 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Ross-

The SA612 is identified as an alternate for the SA602 in the manual (see
Page 3 of Appendix A, Control Board).

I believe there are eleven I.C.s in 8-pin DIP packages. They are all listed
in the parts list. Perhaps you can identify that blank one by a process of
elimination if it's the only one unmarked. You are likely right about (b).

Suggest a note to support at elecraft dot com about the issue. They should
be aware of any un-marked parts going out by mistake anyway.

[Elecraft] P3 Understanding the REF LVL Settings and Signal Level in General

2010-09-04 Thread Phil Hystad
I am trying to get a better understanding of the P3 signal level scale (left
vertical scale) with respect to absolute signal levels and the S meter readings.

I have my REF LVL set to -132 dBm. My first question is: what is a reasonable
setting? I merely am guessing at the value of -132 dBm and also I am not quite
sure how accurate this is. According to the P3 manual, this is essentially the
signal strength at the antenna terminal of my K3 (taking into account the pre
amplifier which I happen to have Off).

Also, I was monitoring a signal using the PEAK reading capability of the P3 and
noticed that this particular SSB signal on 17 meter band this morning read peak
about -100 dBm or about a 32 dBm strength over the minimum reading on the
scale. I would like to equate this to a rough idea of an S meter reading. By
my calculations, this should be a little bit above an S4 reading. Can someone
confirm that I am in the right ball park?

Thanks for the help.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 VCO control voltage range

2010-09-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
The variation on range is controlled by the varactors. D21 through
D26. Make certain you have the smaller 1SSV149 varactors at D21 and D22
and the larger ones at D23 - D26.

Check the soldering for those varactors and R30, R31, R32 and R33.

[Elecraft] OT - How to contact Vibroplex with a question

2010-09-04 Thread Tom Hammond
A local newbie bought a Vibroplex Vibrokeyer at a recent hamfest. He
brought it to me to help him get it adjusted.

After adjusting the spring tension (too tight no matter how 'loose'
the adjustments made it), and the contact spacing, I noticed that it
didn't key the keyer to which it was attached... and when it DID
(infrequently) cause the keyer to emit a tone, the electrical contact
of either level was not consistent.

Using an ohmmeter I confirmed that the GND lead of the connecting
cable was in deed electrically connected to the base of the keyer AND
the the yoke holding the dual levers. But NEITHER lever gave
continuity to ground...!

Removing the keying levers revealed that this was in fact, one of the
few paddles which came with synthetic ruby bearings which had not
long ago been crushed by excessive tightening of the adjusting
screws. However, given that the ruby bearings were still in place,
they provided for the levers to be well above ground potential to the
base, and thus to the keyer itself.

The ONLY method I was able to find that each keying lever might have
been 'electrically connected to the keyer base was via the
(contact-return 'tension' spring in each lever.

I've tried to find a contact method for Vibroplex but have had no
luck finding ANYTHING, unless I want to place an order for parts or service.

Does anyone happen to have a phone or e-mail address for
Vibroplex? And more importantly, can anyone confirm that the ONLY
source of grounding between the Vibrokeyer levers and the base of the
paddle is via the contact return springs? If so, man, that's a
HORRIBLY POOR connection to be relying upon.

Thanks for your time,

73,

Tom Hammond N0SS

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Understanding the REF LVL Settings and Signal Level in General

2010-09-04 Thread Alan Bloom
My first question is: what is a reasonable setting?

It's kind of a season to taste -- whatever gives a pleasing display to
your eyes. When the waterfall is turned on, I find that it's best to
adjust the REF LVL so that the noise level is right at the bottom of the
spectrum screen. That seems to make weak signals easiest to spot on the
waterfall.

I am not quite sure how accurate this is.

I would guess that typically it should be within a few dB. Let's say
within one S-unit (6 dB). I plan to add a feature so you can calibrate
it against an accurate signal source.

...and noticed that this particular SSB signal on 17 meter band this morning
read peak about -100 dBm or about a 32 dBm strength over the minimum reading
on the scale. I would like to equate this to a rough idea of an S meter
reading. By my calculations, this should be a little bit above an S4
reading. Can someone confirm that I am in the right ball park?

What I do is to remember that S9 is -73 dBm (an easy number for a ham to
remember) and there's 6 dB per S-unit. So -100 dBm is (100-73)/6 = 4.5
S-units below S9. So between S4 and S5.

Another item on my to-do list is a MENU option to change the scale
from dBm to S-units and dB over S9. It's not all that hard to do, I
just need to clear some higher-priority tasks off the list first.

Alan,

Thanks for the excellent answers. So, if you created a signal level calibration
would the Elecraft XG2 be a bitting and accurate signal source? Or, would some
lab equipment be needed. Actually, I don't really know how the XG2 compares
to some lab quality equipment, it may be just as accurate.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Understanding the REF LVL Settings and Signal Level in General

2010-09-04 Thread Alan Bloom
I just looked it up. The XG2 has a specified level accuracy of 2 dB,
and 1 dB typical. A professional lab-quality RF signal generator would
typically be about twice that good (hard spec in the 1 dB range):

http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/redirector.jspx?action=refcname=AGILENT_EDITORIALckey=843957lc=engcc=USnfr=-536906709.536910813.00

So if you have access to a calibrated lab-quality signal generator, then
use it. But the XG2 isn't bad and is about 100 times cheaper. :=)

to some lab quality equipment, it may be just as accurate.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I am so close to a solution
but can't cross the finish line just yet.

I followed your instructions and managed to get it working for PSK. I even
had a qso. Now I've got the RTTY working but for some reason the PSK is
playing up again. I get the K3 switching on but there doesn't seem to be any
power getting out and the transmit has stopped switching off again.

I've just heard claps of thunder and I've disconnected all of my aerials.
I'll try again in the morning.

Thanks again

[Elecraft] Odd behaviour

2010-09-04 Thread John Ronan
Hi,

Firstly, I'm not generally an SSB operator (in fact I've not done a
whole lot of operating since May, but thats another story), but today I
took K3 #2184 out for SSB Field Day,

MCU v2.05
FPF v1.10
DSP1 v2.6
DSP2 v2.6
DVR v1.03

Anyway, Issue 1. I was using the DVR, and when I selected just 1 play of
a memory, and 'late' in that playback, decided to press and hold the
same button. At the end of the first playback, the K3 took a long time
to switch back to rx (even though it had finished transmitting).

Issue 2.
While in the 4-5 second gap between DVR transmissions, I was using the
sub receiver to tune for multipliers, I would have liked to have been
able to see the sub receiver frequency now and again (possibly when the
K3 was tx'ing). I would be interested to hear what anyone else thinks of
this.

Now, hands up, it's the first time I've really used it for SSB, so both
of these could be operator error.

Oh, and I did have a lot of fun!

Regards
de John

[Elecraft] P3 Com Port Issues

2010-09-04 Thread Terry Schieler
My P3 (#318) was delivered last week. This morning I finally got time to
assemble it. What a joy!

I installed the P3 with the computer serial cable routed through it to the
K3. Since my first day of owning my K3 (#474) I have had the ability for my
logging software (N3FJP) to control the K3. Upon connecting the P3 today I
get Com Port errors (port already in use) when trying to use the logging
software. I made no changes to the logging settings, simply routed the
serial cable thorough the P3 as designed. Using today's version of K3
firmware.

I seem to recall a thread on this subject some time back but can't find it
when I need it. Can anyone point me toward the resolution?

Thanks. 73,

[Elecraft] {KX1} DX question

2010-09-04 Thread stan levandowski

Does anyone know the basis of the distance reported under Details in
QRZ.com entries?

I recently worked HB9FBG on 500 milliwatts with 6 regular AA Eveready
batteries (at least that's what my inline wattmeter said) on a 40 meter
dipole up in my attic. The distance from me to HB9FBG was reported as
3947.8 miles. Does anyone know if this represents GPS miles, a
straight line approximation, miles reported from some table derivation,
miles that represent some approximation of a radio signal's trip up to
the ionosphere and back down...? I'm no math genius when it comes to
trig but it seems that there could be quite a mileage distance. Also,
the .8 in QRZ.com's mileage suggests some technology is at work!

You could use most any connector, RCA jack, BNC, SMA, SO-239. The rear

Re: [Elecraft] Z10000 installatoin in K2

2010-09-04 Thread Jack Smith
The reason for an SMA is that it mounts in a 0.25 inch (6.35mm) hole
and can be fitted onto a K2 rear panel with all possible options
installed. It was not possible to get a BNC to work under all conditions
of K2 options.

The particular SMA provides shielding integrity, unlike using a panel
mount BNC with a solder lug and center conductor loop.

Jerry,

You could use most any connector, RCA jack, BNC, SMA, SO-239. The rear
panel space is a bit tight if you have both the K60XV and the K160RX, so
just use whatever fits. I personally would not want to use the Receive
ANT jack, but you certainly can if that is your choice.

Given the location indicated for installation of the board, I can't

picking up any stray signals is a concern.

Since I never use the BNC connector for my 160 meter board, figured
 I would
use it rather than drilling more holes in the back panel.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something so thought I would

Re: [Elecraft] Z10000 installatoin in K2

2010-09-04 Thread n0jrn
Thanks guys:

I appreciate very much your response.

I have every option available in my K2 Jack and I really didn't want to drill
another hole in the back panel.

I understand the need to keep any stray signals out of this circuit and figured
that's why you elected to use the SMA.

I just wonedered if I was overlooking something by electing to use the RX ant
BNC.

I have no room at my QTH for a receive only antenna so using that connectors
satisfies my need and makes for a very clean installation.

SO, back to the bench so I can finish this little project.

Again thanks:

[Elecraft] K2 assembly

2010-09-04 Thread zendoc

Hello All,

seems there's a burst of K2 assembling going on in the world. I've just started
#6998 and all is going well so far. Hoping I won't need too much help, but it's
good to know the group is here. I've found a review of old K2 postings very
helpful, along with Don's tips about calibration etc.

It's going to be a big project. I've also got the KPA100 and the DSP module to
built and fit. Hope it will be fun.

Cheers from down here,

[Elecraft] K2 IC identification

2010-09-04 Thread zendoc

Hi Ross,

I had a similar moment of worry when I looked at some of the ICs under an
illuminated magnifying glass and just saw a blank top with, apparently, no ID
markings. Then by accident, I slightly tipped the top face of the IC away from
the light so the top was illuminated tangentially and voila - out popped the
lettering in a faint silver glow. In my case, it seemed the silver lettering
was very difficult to see if illuminated directly with a bright light source.
Try gently re-orienting the IC under the light and see if you can make out the
letters any better.

John VK7JB

Re: [Elecraft] K2 assembly

2010-09-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  John,

WOW, only 2 away from the 7000 mark!

If you are looking at the really old K2 postings, there are many that
have been made null and void by the updated boards. Remember that you
have the updated boards in your kit, and you should not have to do any
cuts or adds when you add the options. I have 'repaired' several new
K2s where the builder tried to add the cuts and wire adds to the K2
control board when installing either the KIO2 or the KPA100. If those
builders had read the instructions correctly, it would have been
apparent that those changes were only to be done for K2s with serial
numbers below 3000.

In other words, read and understand, and if you have questions about the
understanding part, ask here on the reflector.

Enjoy the build, and when finished, enjoy the K2.

Additional note (not on my webpage yet) -- when setting the filters on
recent K2s, you will find that the wide (SSB) filters are actually much
wider than the width indicated by the K2 display - and as a result,
the suggested settings for the SSB filters listed in the manual will not
work well. The cure is to use Spectrogram (or a similar tool) to
measure the actual bandwidth. Refer to my webpage article on K2 Dial
Calibration for more information.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2010-09-04 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
Another chilly week. This has been the shortest and coldest summer since
I have lived in Oregon. Folks here are talking about summer coats and gloves.
They are not kidding! I have only had a couple t-shirt days and those are
spaced out on those rare days when the temperature got over 70 degrees.
However, there is a silver lining to that grey cloud: the fire danger has been
very low. Just means we have to wait for next year to feel warm. Summer
started late, is finishing early and was interspersed with many cold snaps so
we had maybe three weeks of warm weather total. Even the leaves are changing
and the critters are making plans for winter.
I have not been on the air much this week but when I was on 80 meters copy
was very good. Unfortunately all of that was local. No great shakes for DX
contacts but it was fun to call CQ and see who was out there. Casual chats
which were tailended by other curiosity seekers was a nice way to spend a few
hours on the radio. No points to worry about, no pile ups to fight, just work
a few people and find out what they are thinking. Once I make contact I rarely
talk about radio since it is obvious that I have one. It is more fun to talk
about the garden or the outdoors or just whatever comes up. No pressure to
perform just a simple chat. And, since they are locals, we can talk about how
cold it is without someone thinking we are a bit whacko :)

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 IC identification

2010-09-04 Thread Don Wilhelm
  John.

Well, I suspect the situation will get even worse with a bit of time.
The first thing I noticed was that the resistor color coding did not
have the color saturation that was used several years ago, and then the
printing on the ICs became more elusive.

If you can think like an automated insertion machine, you will have no
problem, just expect that 100+ parts that are NE612 will be loaded into
your hopper by someone who only reads the label on the shipment from
DigiKey, etc. In that case, there is no need to read the actual device
markings. Manufacturers are responding to the needs of the board
assembly houses which do not need people readable markings. We hams
will just have to be tolerant and creative in ways to order and identify
the parts that we order.
