[Elecraft] Quick/Simple Question

2012-05-16 Thread Dave Wright
This seems like something I should know, but I'm not certain I ever came across
this info.

I just finished installing the P3SVGA option and I have decided to power my P3
from my power supply using the included power cable, rather than powering it
from the K3. The P3 requires 10-15 vdc with the center being positive
polarity. The included power cable has one wire that is black, and one that
is black with grey stripes.

The question is; which one is connected to the tip/center? The black wire or
the black and grey wire.

Again, I appreciate the assistance with such a simple question.

I wasn't certain either, but a quick check with a multi-meter answered the
question.

[Elecraft] K2 Loss of functions on 20M 17M bands

2012-05-16 Thread Ray Spreadbury
Hi Elecrafters

The K2 (# 4099) has the 100W amplifier and external tuner. It appears to
behave normally in all modes on all bands except 20M 17M.

The K2 has lost all receive sensitivity on both the 20M 17M bands (no
signals can be heard).

In addition, it will not transmit on these two bands and has a very high SWR
into a 50ohm dummy load on these bands.

Bypassing the external tuner does not improve the situation even when
feeding into the dummy load, so I assume the problem is within the K2 rather
than the external tuner.

I am not sure if these symptoms point to a problem(s) in either the
band-pass and low-pass filters?

Any ideas of what I should be checking please?

Cheers

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Loss of functions on 20M 17M bands

2012-05-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ray,

That sounds like you have a problem with the 20/17 meter Low Pass filter
in the KPA100.
Relays K7 or K8, soldering of L7 or L8, or C4 A, B, C, D or E capacitors.
Yes, poorly soldered connections can take several years to develop
enough oxidation to create a loss of connection.

To check which of the involved components is the culprit, the easy thing
to do is to simply re-flow the soldering using a hot (800 degF)
soldering iron.
If that does not cure the problem, then you would want to check the
relays for continuity. Power only the base K2, set to 20 or 17 meters
and see if you have continuity between TP2 and the center conductor of
the SO-239 jack.
If no continuity, check continuity across relays K7 and K8 to see if one
of those is the problem. By powering only the base K2, you can select
the band and probe the underside of the KPA100 board. The KPA100 relays
are not latching types, so you need to have the base K2 powered on.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

2012-05-16 Thread wf8o
Can anyone explain the sequence of order numbers for KX3?
The Confirmation number is an array of 12 digits. When I look
at the conf # 2208-4537-7265 shown by Elecraft to relate
to a 12/28/11 order, I am confused since the last four digits
of my conf number is a much lower number. I must be looking at the
wrong digits. Any clues?

Thanks.

Mike,

You are trying to gain information from a number that does not contain
anything other than just a number
If you ordered on-line, there are several other companies that use that
same ordering service, and the numbers are sequential for that entire
service.
It is just a number used for reference, nothing more.

[Elecraft] Slow Speed CW With My K3

2012-05-16 Thread Joel Black
It's been around 15 years since I worked any CW and then it was only to pass
the General exam. I am very interested in working some sloow speed CW. I
can copy reliably up to about 8 - 9 WPM. I am still having issues with L, F,
Y, and a couple of others but especially L and F.

I've done web searches and found a few nets listed, but when I go there after
confirming date / time, I cannot find anyone (I'm just listening right now).
Is there a slow-speed CW net anyone knows of I can listen to from Alabama? I'm
thinking on 40 or 80m because I'm home most evenings.

I'll also say, copying on air is a *heap* different from copying via software
and the web... LOL... I had forgotten that.

Re: [Elecraft] Slow Speed CW With My K3

2012-05-16 Thread Phil Hystad
I second the idea of listening to the ARRL code practice sessions. I will
listen to those on my mobile rig if it is otherwise a slow news-talk-radio day.
They usually send from QST articles. I remember one time I was actually
getting interested in the content of the article and then they stopped -- end
of the practice session.

I also highly recommend listening to the contests on CW. Even though they go
pretty fast at usually 30 wpm or more it is very good practice to pick up a few
good skills. For example, picking out call signs at high speed is useful. I
think I improved my speed capability quite a bit by doing that.

Joel,

You might try the SKCC (Straight Key Century Club) scheduling page at:

 http://www.obriensweb.com/sked/index.php?board=skcc

Just show up, log yourself in (you don't have to be a member), and
announce that you'd like some code practice. Any SKCC member would be
delighted to help with on-the-air code practice.

Also, You might try sending out a slow CQ on 7122. Elmers who enjoy
helping people practice CW often hang out there.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

2012-05-16 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
Hi Keith,

You are definitely closer than me! I wasn't able to order mine until January
11 ...
but I am hoping that the backlog did not grow as quickly between December 30
and
January 11 as it did for the first few days of orders! I have been using my K3
on my
portable 6m EME DXpeditions, but am looking forward to using the KX3, since
excess
baggage charges on my last trip just about cleaned me out! Every pound and
cubic
inch saved really makes a difference when you are hauling all your equipment
halfway
around the world!

Your quest for an effective high gain portable yagi for 6m is something for
which
many of us also yearn! It sure would sure be a boon to successful 6m
DXpeditions if
there were such an animal. The closet thing I have found are two antennas made
by
M2, the 6M5XHG and 6M8GJ. Both break down into a maximum length of 44, so
they fit
into a nylon bag that can be transported easily and complies with the
dimensions of
standard airline checked baggage.

Here is a photo of the antenna erected at 5W0GJ last fall:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=232926826755368set=a.232925890088795.54498.11141574142type=3l=00a25144ad

And below is a photo of the antenna AND the 21' portable mast ready to be put
into
the little nylon transportation bag. I have to say, using the 6M8GJ makes me
feel a
bit like a magician ;-)

The don't just instantly pop out of a suitcase like a tent supported by
aluminum
tubing all held together by elastic cords...however, for transportation, they
ARE
compact! Additional information on how I mark my 6M8GJ for field assembly and
raise
it is here:

Also keep in mind, if you hear FISTS members going faster than you can
copy, the great majority (if not all) of the members should be more than
willing to slow down for you.

I've done web searches and found a few nets listed, but when I go there

I'll also say, copying on air is a *heap* different from copying via

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

2012-05-16 Thread Arthur Burke
Initially, I felt like I ordered fairly quickly - until the spreadsheet
started and everybody and their brother was talking about what time (down
to the second!) they placed their order.

I didn't have a time (not even a date!) - just the order number. I wrote
the order number down somewhere and the email ultimately went to the
virtual round file.

When I saw your number, I took heart - mine doesn't look like it's that far
behind yours. Maybe salvation is just around the corner!

Looking at the first version of the kit manual is fun. There's a lot less
involved than there was in building my K3.

I want a new computer - something blazing with 8G RAM a big hard drive and
an SSD. The K3 and the P3 were such fun experiences, I'm seriously thinking
about ordering all the pieces and building my own.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

2012-05-16 Thread Keith Heimbold
Hi Lance,

I am excited to get my KX3. It will be great to have for a biz travel radio and
also when I need to visit my ailing mom in Florida. Being on the road
constantly is tough and I have struggled with getting Remoterig operational to
be honest. So having the KX3, a powerwerx 35 amp small switching power supply,
my small mirage 6m mobile amp, and a collapsible 6m yagi antenna will be
awesome for me. It is a major stress reliever to hit the top of malibu after
battling all day with a large scale IT program.

The five element could be the ticket though probably big for a best western
balcony, but probabky good for going portable. I currently am using a homebrew
three element that I plan to extend to a four element in my truck that takes
about ten minutes to get in the air.

For business air travel, I would like an easy to transport three or four
element to take with me. A dipole is an ok antenna for HF but really doesn't do
it for 6m. Since 6m was so dead last night I put up a 15m resonant dipole on a
push up pole and had a nice QSO with Hawaii. Nice conversation but of course HF
is shooting fish in a barrell and not as challenging, dynamic or magical as 6.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Keith

Thanks, Don. I suspected that the conf # had no predictive value.
I was misled a bit by the comment on the Order Status page that
suggested that removing the dashes would give a meaningful (to me)
index into the future. More meaningful is that they also said that they
were
shipping units ordered on 12/28/11. That suggests that the wait may be
yet significant. Oh Well -- it'll be worth the wait.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] K3: Reading k3 swr remotely

2012-05-16 Thread Charles Sanders
In CQ/X (www.no5w.com) checking of the SWR is done using the following.

Set up the SWR read

  //Read/save Current Power Setting
  TheRadio-SavePreTunePower();

  //Read/save ATU Status
  TheRadio-SavePreTuneAtuStatus();

  //Put ATU in Bypass mode
  TheRadio-PutAtuInBypassMode();

//Reduce Power Output to desired tuning power and Transmit
  TheRadio-XmitTuneWatts();

//set up and enable timer to run for a desired number of seconds of Tune
Time
  StartTimeOfTune = Now();
  TuneTime = TheRadio-GetTuneTimeAsAbsTime();
  tmTune-Enabled = true;

Do the read using the DS command to read the VFOA text and then interpret
text

Finally restore the output power and ATU status to their previous values.

Re: [Elecraft] Slow Speed CW With My K3

2012-05-16 Thread Richard S. Leary
Joel;
As Carey stated, NAQCC, and W1AW are good places to check out. Then listen to
the rhythm. I believe thats very important. As taught to me back in the 50's
at USAF radio school, F is di di dah dit or Get a haircut, J was the
damnd ol jay di dah dah dah, and Q was pay day today. Just sound it out
with rhythm and it sorta works. Been doing CW for over 57 years, and I guess
I've heard it all, good, bad, and otherwise, though my sending could use some
improvement.
I wish you all the best in your endeavours. You won't regret it one bit. There
are folks out there that will not mind at all to slow down to your speed. Our
basic orders (USAF) and rule of thumb was to Always send at the speed of the
slowest operator on the net. Just plain courtesy.

Take care and see you on the air one of these days.

Rick, W7LKG

Hi Joel:

The NAQCC (North American QRP CW Club) runs a bunch of QRS nets. Here is a
link to their website and schedules for these nets.
http://naqcc.info/cw_nets.html

I had problems with 'L' and 'F' too. I just remembered the sound.
di-di-dah-dit, F. Went over it a bazillion times in my head, over and over
again. It finally stuck.

Good luck with the code. It is great.

[Elecraft] KX3 assembly manual question

2012-05-16 Thread Bruce Beford
At the end of the KX3 assembly manual, the following statement is seen:

 2) If you installed the KXFL3, calibrate it as shown on the instruction
sheet supplied with the KXFL3 module.

I note that the instruction sheet for the KXFL3 module is not yet available
on the Elecraft manuals download page. Could it be posted please, for
download and review of these calibration instructions?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 assembly manual question

2012-05-16 Thread JP O'Connor
Absent the referenced document, possibly the information you seek is in the
KX3 Owner's Manual. Specifically on page 31: If you install a KXFL3
roofing filter during KX3 kit assembly, or install one in a factory
assembled KX3 after initial purchase, you’ll need to perform the Receive
Sideband calibration step (pg 32).

If these are both the same thing, then possibly the assembly manual could
also be adjusted: 2) If you installed the KXFL3, calibrate it as shown on
the instruction sheet supplied with the KXFL3 module or as shown in the
Calibration section of the KX3 Owner's Manual.

Hope this helps!

Bruce,

The instructions have changed. Did you receive a KXFL3 option quite
recently? If so, there should have been a small 2 turn loop antenna
supplied with it - along with the instructions.

I do have a preliminary copy of the instructions - because I field
tested those instructions.
If you have a real need to obtain them, send me an off-list email -
actually I was hoping someone at Elecraft would answer you and could
likely give you more updated info, but I think the key players in this
are getting ready to go to Dayton and don't have time to read the reflector.

Re: [Elecraft] Slow Speed CW With My K3

2012-05-16 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Joel, you might just get on the air. If you don't find a CQ at a slow enough
speed, call CQ yourself, perhaps adding /QRS from time to time.

There's nothing that focuses the mind of a new CW operator like being in a
QSO. That's why so many of us can remember how it felt to reach for the key
even decades later.

Hams who know on-air etiquette will call you at YOUR speed. We have our
share of LIDs who don't understand and romp out a call at a high speed. Just
ignore them. They're learning too - in their case Ham etiquette Hi! If you
respond at all just say pse QRS OM

But there are a lot of fellows who will come back at your speed. I do that
every time I hear a slow CQ.

We might spend at least 15 minutes just exchanging our names, qth, rig, and
then sign. For someone really new at CW QSO's, a 15 minute QSO just getting
that stuff across is often a pretty exhausting exercise anyway.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 kit shipping estimate

2012-05-16 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
To add to Vic's comment, the connections between the tape and the feeder
would have to be well protected against moisture and rain. Any corrosion of
these connections could result in BCI to nearby FM broadcast receivers - the
rusty bolt effect.

A very neat and sturdy 6m yagi built by a friend many years ago for portable
use, was made of fibreglass tubing. Both the boom and each element support
consisted IIRC of three lengths of tubing, with the outer parts telescoped
into the middle part, and locked into place by a bolt, washer and nut.
Each element was made of large guage copper wire, taped to its support
tubing.

[Elecraft] K3 - EZ problem

2012-05-16 Thread Bill
Downloaded the newest K3 EZ and am now greeted with Unhandled exception
has occurred in your application error.

I can choose to ignore and it appears to run fine. But, something is wrong.

Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - EZ problem

2012-05-16 Thread Jim
A couple days ago when I downloaded the newer version and was in the TX EQ
section I noticed my K3 readout frequency was changing. After rebooting the
computer all has appeared ok.

To add to Vic's comment, the connections between the tape and the feeder

A very neat and sturdy 6m yagi built by a friend many years ago for portable
use, was made of fibreglass tubing. Both the boom and each element support
consisted IIRC of three lengths of tubing, with the outer parts telescoped
into the middle part, and locked into place by a bolt, washer and nut.
Each element was made of large guage copper wire, taped to its support
 tubing.

I don't get the appeal of tape measure material for antenna elements.
 Other than its
'self-measurement' property, what's good about it? It is made of steel,
 which has a
relatively high resistance, and isn't particularly durable.
