Re: [Elecraft] Kx3
IMHO, Sanyo Eneloop 2000 cells are the best value out there. They work well and are Low Self Discharge (LSD) cells. They are available at Costco, or on-line from various Amazon suppliers. Sanyo really got the chemistry right, and I highly recommend them along with the KXBC3, especially if this is your first experience with NiMH cells. IMHO, the higher capacity non-LSD cells simply aren't worth the trouble of trying to keep them charged. Simply put, the Eneloops work good and last a long time. I have beat them up in home use for several years now, and they are great so long as you don't run them below about 0.9v/cell. The KX3 will make sure that doesn't happen. Hope this helps. Re: [Elecraft] Using the KPA500 with the K3 & Yaesu MKV Field
The short answer is that you need to disconnect the K3 from the KPA when using it with another rig. The long answer? It would probably work the way you want if you leave the K3 powered up. That’s probably not a good idea though. The problem is that the K3 has internal pull-up resistors to VCC on the band and PTT signals. When the K3 is powered off, these continue to pull the signals to VCC, which is now zero volts. A low on the PTT input causes the KPA to go into transmit mode, which is what you are seeing. With either explanation, the solution is to disconnect the signals. By the way, it is also a good idea to disconnect the signals from the MKV when using the K3 with the KPA. Those are the ones I use. I strongly recommend low self-discharge for NiMH batteries. There are batteries with greater capacity, but after a week, they have less charge than the Eneloop XX. There are lots of generations of Eneloop batteries. There is even a 2nd generation Eneloop XX that has 2550mAh capacity. The Wikipedia page is quite helpful. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eneloop There are a number of linear supplies in the 3-5A range. These are inexpensive and quiet, but weigh a few pounds. [Elecraft] Using the KPA500 with the K3 & Yaesu MKV Field
I have been using the KPA500 with my K3 with the AUX cable. Everything has worked fine since Day One. Yesterday, I hooked up a newly acquired MP MKV Field to the KPA with a cable from the PA Key jack on the KPA500 to the "TX GND" jack on the MKV. I switch between the rigs using a coax switch into the amp. Using either RF sensing or manual bandswitching, I have no problems generating 500 watts with about 45 watts drive from the MKV. The problem is when the MKV is in receive mode. As long as the amp is in the Standby position, everything is fine. As soon as the amp is switched to the Operate position, there is major attenuation of the receive signal; I mean like from S9 to S1. I solved the problem by temporarily unplugging the AUX cable from the KPA500; receive is now normal in either the Standby or Operate mode. This works but it is inconvenient. I cannot seem to find a menu setting or some other means to allow by rigs to be connected to the amp while leaving the K3-to-KPA500 AUX cable connected. Any suggestions? 73 de K6SBA David in Santa Barbara, CA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3-2M Module FAQ now available
I bought that L-shaped computer mic from Fry's a while back and was thinking of using/holding the KX3 like an HT, so wasn't sure how I would key it when using it that way. Thanks for the info. Mike AC6JA In a message dated 11/4/2013 2:01:23 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, n...@elecraft.com writes: ac...@aol.com wrote: > Is the PTT going to be the XMIT button? Hi Mike, Most operators use the mic's PTT button, but you can also tap XMIT to start/end transmit. There's one catch, having to do with DTMF. For numeric keypad purposes, XMIT is used as the '0' switch. So if you tap XMIT, then enter DTMF mode (by tapping FREQ ENT), you need to exit DTMF mode (by tapping FREQ ENT again) to return XMIT to its normal function. Tapping XMIT will then go back to receive mode. This will all be described in the KX3 owner's manual and in the manual that comes with the KX3-2M module. The loop, KX3 and Sidekicks end panels and plexiglass cover are all on order. After nearly twenty-years of not switching on a radio I'm looking forward to starting again. [Elecraft] Looking for beta testers for Win4K3Suite for the Elecraft KX3
Win4K3Suite version 1.35 now supports the Elecraft KX3. In addition to all the features of the K3 version it also provides a Panadapter function using the IQ output of the KX3 and a stereo sound input on your computer. It offers the same features as the P3 supporting VFOA and B with point and click functionality. I am looking for beta testers who are willing to test out the panadapter functionality. In particular, people who have some experience in software based panadapters and are willing to devote a bit of time using the software and feel comfortable with system configuration of sound adapters. The new version now also supports N1MM contest logger so if you have experience with this that would be appreciated. The core functionality of the radio control program is already production ready. The beta should be available next week (Nov 11-18). If you are interested please send me a PM and I will send you the information shortly. [Elecraft] KPA500/K3/P3 cabling together
Just assembled the KPA500. I have a few questions on cabling. I will be cabling together the KPA500/K3/P3. I got the KPAK3AUX cable set 9-pin Serial cable. Does the serial cable from the PC go first to the P3 or KPA500? 15-pin cable. I plan on putting the included gender changer (key line interupter) on the K3. Then the Y-cable. From there it will go to the KPA500 and the existing 15-pin acc cable. Any issues with putting the gender changer right on the K3? This seems to be the only way you can tighten the screws on all the cables. K3 Key Out Presently I have a cable running from the K3 Key Out to the N8LP SteppIR Tuning Relay, then on to the Acom 2000A. I have added a pair of 12V A/B switches. One in the shack to select the output from the K3 to either the Acom or KPA500 inputs. In the basement where I have the Acom I have the second A/B switch to select the output of either the Acom or KPA500. This way in the shack I have a toggle switch to select either amp. On the output of the N8LP SteppIR Tuning Relay I plan on using a "T" for tying together the key line for the KPA500 and Acom. My question - Do I need series isolation diodes to select which amp for keying? Any issues? Tnx for any feedback. If I missed any of this in the manuals, I apologize up front. 73, N2TK, Tony __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I use my KX3 on 146.805 repeater with no problem. I think the firmware is a little smarter - you tell it you have a transverter connected (up to 10, I believe) and it's cared for. Monty K2DLJ I would to use an existing 2 meter xvtr with the KX3. No problem except my primary use would be for satellite operation. That is in the 145.8 to 146.0 mhz. That would correspond to 29.8 to 30.0 mhz, which is out of band for the KX3. So, is there a way to allow transmit just above the ten meter band? One option would be to change the xtal in the inverter down 1 mhz, but then I give up the weak signal bottom of the 2 meter band. For full instructions on loading beta releases, refer to our KX3 software page: http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/KX3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 1.68 / DSP 1.23, 9-24-2013 * LOW POWER (UNDER 1 W) NOW WORKS IN SSB MODE: Previously, with power settings under 1 W, SSB power output could drop to about 0.1 W and stay there. * ESSB DISALLOWS USE OF CMP (compression): If the user attempts to adjust compression in ESSB mode, the VFO B display shows "N/A" (not available). The KX3's speech ompression algorithm requires the use of normal SSB bandwidths. * DATA-A/AFSK-A/etc. BUG FIX: The MIC GAIN control now works as expected. In the previous release, adjustment of keyer speed while using the CW-in-SSB feature would leave the MIC GAIN control set to keyer speed when the user switched to an audio data mode. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] ARRL Sweepstakes CW
Thanks Elecraft for making K3, I also love my KX3. While I passed my 20 wpm code for extra in 2000 just before the cut over, I am not great at CW, sending or receiving. (I plan to work on it more this winter on a local slownet). Anyway, using the K3 this weekend, I was able to really enjoy doing the ARRL Sweepstakes CW contest. Using the 250Hz filter turned down to 150Hz DSP, the CW decoder worked awesome. Using N1MM and a recent call database for Sweepstakes, I could easily decode with the K3 decoder and some by ear the exchange, capture the serial number and verify the rest of the exchanged. I used a WinKeyer lite to key the radio with N1MM. I didn't figure out the settings in N1MM to key the K3 direct. If anyone knows that exchange code, please share. During CQ WW SSB, I copied off some N1MM exchange code that activitated the built in voice keyer. I rarely had to talk, which made the operation quiet and less bothersome for the XYL. ac...@aol.com wrote: > Is the PTT going to be the XMIT button? Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Remote control problem & question
Another feature to look for in remote power switches is what mine calls "Auto-ping." You set up the switch to ping a remote, highly reliable server - Google and others operate servers used for this purpose. If a ping fails to respond, the switch counts failures until a user-set number that suggests the network is down. At that point it cycles power on a designated outlet. Here, the DSL modem/router is connected to that outlet. This reboots the modem/router and gives you a "fresh" networking environment, even when things have gone so bad that you can't talk to the switch, your station, etc. These remote power switches are great! There are many on the market. Mine is from Digital Loggers at webpowerswitch.com. /Rick N6XI On Mon, Nov 4, 2013 at 3:52 AM, Doug Joyce wrote: > GM: If you are looking for a unit to provide remote AC power switching, > checkout the Professional 4-port Remote Power Switch from Ambery (Model > IP-P3) see http://www.ambery.com/prreposwphco.htm > > It can be remotely controlled via phone or web control and provides four > separately switched AC outlets. Re: [Elecraft] K2 #7379 troubleshooting
Don, Yes the K2 is completely built & I was at alignment & test part 3 when I had the low o/p power problem. I started the transmit signal tracing procedure & did the receive testing to check the shared circuits as instructed in the manual. I'll carry on with the transmit signal tracing & see where I get to. I guess the point that you said you had trouble adjusting the 40 meter BPF made me think the 10 MHz oscillator might not work for you. If you have it completely built, then the 10 MHz crystal will work. You must select the 30 meter band. However, because you have a transmit problem, you should use the transmit signal tracing rather than receive - you will find the problem source more easily, and the K2 itself provides the signals require for signal tracing. Again, stop at the first point where the RF is substantially lower than the expected value because you have found a failure point. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/4/2013 5:01 AM, Brian Stevens wrote: Don, I've had another think & the low readings I get at LPF,BPF & T-R sw o/p's using the 10Mhz oscillator are with the VFO set so that I can hear the oscillator signal, not at 40m. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KX3 with Alex Loop
I’ve had a ball with my KX3 and AlexLoop Walkham, particularly on 20- and 17-meters. Very easy to set-up, and easy to tune with just a little practice. I have the unedited QST “Short Takes” review in the “Reviews” section of my website at www.ad5x.com. Included in that review is a simple interface I built that lets the Walkham be easily attached to a standard camera tripod.
