Re: [Elecraft] User's Dilemma

2023-12-15 Thread Richard Corfield
I thought ML serviced Elecraft in the UK. Sad that that's gone. My
experience with my KX3 was to send it to America. This was pre-Brexit, so...

It was sent to America for repair of a rotary encoder and addition of the
2m module back in 2019. This was a paperwork nightmare as I had to export
it as goods for repair, and it had to come back with the right paperwork to
connect it to my export in order that I don't pay import duties and taxes
on over £1000 worth of radio! I had to find the original receipt from the
original owner so that Elecraft on returning it could be sure to prove that
tax had been paid on the radio in the UK. The paperwork I filled in is
designed for goods export for sale, and I ended up writing on it in large
letters something like TEMPORARY EXPORT FOR REPAIR.

It came back I think without the 2m module installed (my emails to UPS are
about it having a significant part missing), though it looks like I may
have paid VAT on that (I can find a VAT bill for £85 which implies an item
cost of £425 which would be the repair, parts, 2m module and shipping

It was sent to repair in Italy for uniting with the 2m module and
calibration. We were in the EU at the time so this was easy. I imagine the
experience now we are out of the EU would be like the experience I had
sending to America.

In retrospect I've not used the 2m module that much. I'll have to get out
for more UKAC contests with it, but family is keeping me very busy at the
moment. I think the filter module would be a good purchase for my use of
the radio for CW.

The rotary encoder failed again, and I repaired it myself this time. It was
easier to risk my repair skills on a >£1000 radio than go through that
shipping/customs polava again. The original repair with Elecraft did allow
for the radio to be thoroughly checked over and any other needed updates to
be made, which was good.

[Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-06 Thread Richard
Thanks to the many helping hands out there this is what seems to work with no
second receiver:

1. Lock VFO A on DX’s calling frequency

2. Tap A>B to copy DX’s frequency to VFO B

3. Tap DISP to see VFO B frequency below

4. Hold SPLIT to separate RX and TX

5. Tune VFO B “five-up” or as DX requests

6. Make stunning new DX contact

Thanks again one and all.

Cheers!

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-05 Thread Richard
OK, good idea.

1. I tune the DX station normally.
2. I tap A>B to copy A frequency to B.
3. I press and hold SPLIT to separate RX and TX.
4. While holding REV I tune about “five up” or wherever the DX is listening.
5. I release REV and I see the DX’s frequency again.

QUESTION: When I transmit there’s no visual indication on which frequency I’m
transmitting. Should there be?

Cheers.

[Elecraft] K3S Split Operation

2023-11-05 Thread Richard
I am having trouble understanding both the manual and N6FN’s Mini-manual when
it comes to Split operation. I follow the “directions” over and over but
nothing happens.

Does the fact that my K3S does not have a sub receiver mean that I can’t work
split?

If I’m wrong about that I would really appreciate a step-by-step How-To lesson
in working split.

Thanks.

[Elecraft] One More Time

2023-10-14 Thread Richard
Because I’ve seen several Q post here about the IC-7300 I’m going to try my

Is there a simple way to enter “custom” frequencies in the Band Stacking

I’ve scoured both manuals to no avail.

[Elecraft] Headset Hubbub

2023-10-11 Thread Richard
I ordered a Yamaha CM-500 from Amazon but it came through some other company
after waiting eight days and there were problems.

1. The original factory packaging was gone.
2. It came wound in bubble wrap, then stuffed into a cardboard box that had
been cut down from a larger box and taped together.
3. There was no manual.
4. The mic was dead.

I’m betting it was a DOA return item that was then sent out to me thinking I
wouldn’t notice or I’d think returning it was too much trouble.

On top of that, they’ve been out of manufacture for quite some time so all that
the stores have are the dregs.

So now I open again for other suggested headsets in the $100 range. The CM500
was a gaming headset so that could be a source. This is going to be a gift for
a friend who badly needs something.

Any more ideas?

Cheers.

[Elecraft] Birthday Suggestions

2023-10-03 Thread Richard
I have a very good friend who has done a million nice things for me over the
years. He is currently making do with a Heil Pro-Micro one-sided headset that
badly needs replacement. The black foam mic “wind arrester” has disintegrated
and rains nasty black dust whenever you touch it.

He just purchased a nice Icom IC-7410, and he has a birthday coming up. I’d
like to give him a good two-ear headset. Does the 7410 have a mic gain problem
with regard to dynamic mics?

Regardless, I’d appreciate some first-hand experience suggestions for a good
comfortable ragchew-friendly headset with a maximum price of $150. The only two
sources I’d like to avoid are China and Heil.

Looking forward to your ideas.

Re: [Elecraft] A Good Headset For A K3

I've tried the following:

- Heil
- Yamaha CM-500
- RadioSport

Then I found the Inrad W1 http://vibroplex.com/contents/en-us/d9181.html

Hands down the best, in my opinion. It's over the ears, doesn't clamp
on, not heavy and is stout.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 Antenna Selection Problems

2023-08-03 Thread Richard Ferch
I am using a KAT500 with an IC-7610, switching among three antennas. I have
similar problems, as follows:

On each band, I use only one of the antennas; on several bands there is
only one antenna with a reasonable match within the KAT500's capability. I
am relying on the KAT500's frequency sensing to switch antennas and tuner
settings, with the KAT500 in Manual mode.

When I switch between bands that use the same antenna, there seems to be no
problem. The KAT500 detects the new band with one or two transmitted dits
and switches tuner settings to match the remembered setting for the new
frequency.

When changing bands that involve an antenna change, to switch antennas I
have to transmit at least briefly, even if I only want to receive on the
new band. However, when I switch between bands that use different antennas,
some combinations do not seem to work, i.e. the KAT500 does not change
antennas or tuner settings when the transmitter transmits on the new band.
My workaround is to make two band changes in rapid succession. In some
cases I have to switch to another intermediary band that uses the same
antenna as the first band and transmit a dit or two on that band to cause
the KAT500 to switch to the intermediary band, followed by another switch
to the desired second band, while in other cases switching to an
intermediary band that uses the same antenna as the second band works,
followed by a second switch to the intended band.

What appears to me to be happening is that when the match between the
previous tuner settings and the new antenna on the new band is very poor,
the KAT500's frequency-sensing circuit sometimes seems to be unable to
determine the new frequency, and it doesn't switch antennas. Using a
different band as an intermediary, one where the match is not quite as bad,
appears to allow the KAT500 to detect the frequency correctly and make the
switch.

A better solution than my two band change workaround would be to write some
software to read UDP radio info messages from rig control software (in my
case, either N1MM+ or DXLab Suite Commander) and issue BN commands to the
KAT500 through its serial port connection. Regardless of whether the band
change was initiated from the software or from the radio's front panel,
this ought to cause the KAT500 to change antennas and tuner settings
without requiring any transmitting. I haven't tried this yet.

The problem I am having is: with radio on 17 M, when I run a "tune"
sequence, the KAT does not switch to Ant 3, in fact it will not let me
manually switch to ant 3. I occasionally have the same issue with the tuner

Any suggestions on what may be causing this ?

ERR PTT often means that CONFIG:PTT-KEY in the K3 is set to RTS-something
(or DTR-something), and something in the computer is activating RTS (or
DTR) at the time the radio is powered up.

If this is the cause, a simple solution for this is to set CONFIG:PTT-KEY
to OFF-OFF (or OFF-DTR if you want to use DTR for CW keying), and in your
radio control software (WSJT-X and any other programs you use for radio
control) use CAT for PTT control.

[Elecraft] WSJTX ON A MAC

2023-07-26 Thread Richard Gilley
Hi all,

I loaded WSJTX on a IMAC and ran into this issue on my K3: I have receive and
Tx ok but I also have ERR PTT displayed. Pressing any key does not clear this
error and I have no access to power adjust as an example. CAT does go green
but still the error.
I have gone over my WSJTX settings and settings on the K3 as listed in the
manual, and I think I have the audio set correctly in the MAC.

I can run WSJTX on a PC with the K3 without any issue.

I have a feeling that not many folks use Mac but it is what I would prefer to
use.

Thank you all for reading about my problem and that there is solution.

Best regards

Re: [Elecraft] Use of "delay" in K3 CAT Command Strings

2023-07-17 Thread Richard Ferch
First, you need to remember that the programmer's manual for the elecraft
radios does not tell you anything about the syntax of N1MM+ macro commands.
For that you need to consult the N1MM+ documentation.

Second, the ; at the end of each command is not punctuation, it is an
integral and necessary part of each radio command.

The commas in the description in the programmer's manual, on the other
hand, are just punctuation for the reader, to separate the actions the
reader must take. They are not part of the command sequence, and they are
not part of the N1MM+ command syntax either.

One thing you might try would be to use the \ separator in your N1MM+ macro
commands after the first SWTn; command, as in
{CAT1ASC MN032;SWT12;\MP005;SWT14;}
According to the N1MM+ documentation, that will cause the two groups of
radio commands before and after the \ to be sent to the radio in separate
polls, which might be enough separation in time to resolve the issue (no
guarantees, but the fact that it often works without a delay suggests that
you won't need much).

[Elecraft] K3s Receive EQ

2023-06-26 Thread Richard
I love my K3s, warts and all, but I want a way to tailor incoming audio for
better readability in special cases. Yes, I know about the built-in function,
but that's hardly comfortable for quick, on-the-fly adjustments.

Can you recommend/suggest an outboard equalizer, ideally 8 bands, that can be
used to tune the headphone audio only?

1. This unit would be entirely external to the K3s, so its output level would
have to be sufficient to drive headphones.

2. This unit would ideally be 9" by 9" maximum and 8" by 5" minimum, dictated
by the available placement space in my station. There’s lots of wiggle room
here.

3. 12 volts DC is available to power it.

4. An in/out (inline/bypassed) switch is essential.

Links to look at would be great.

Fingers crossed … VISA paid up and ready to rock and roll.

Cheers

Re: [Elecraft] Using KIO3B for digital and AFSK RTTY

2023-05-03 Thread Richard Ferch
W0VTT wrote:

"You can also do radio control through the same USB port, but if you want
to do both at the same time you need a port sharing program like LP Bridge."

The second half of this sentence is incorrect. You can do radio control on
the USB port at the same time as you are using the USB audio codec in the
radio without the need for any port sharing program. The USB audio codec is
functionally independent of the COM port.

The need for a port sharing program like LP Bridge arises only when you are
using the same COM port from more than one program at a time. In contrast,
unlike the COM port which cannot be shared between programs, you can use
the audio codec from multiple programs simultaneously (e.g. multiple RTTY
decoders decoding the same audio signal in parallel).

Re: [Elecraft] P3 question

2023-05-02 Thread Richard Hill
I'm new to my recently set up, 10 year old, P3. Not one of the hotshots
here, grin.

I see a green center line on my P3 at the moment with an additional green A
line and a magenta B line. When I turn the big knob on the K3, both A and
B lines move away from the green center line as the new center of the view
changes. The center line remains constant.

Is that what you are seeing?

[Elecraft] KXV3A Install-Have not been able to seat pins in J66

2023-04-25 Thread Richard Hill
I'm installing a new but old KXV3A board into the J66 block. The
instructions say the pins should just clear the top of J66 when the BNC
connectors are up against the top of the back panel opening. I am not
seeing a way to orient the board such that the pins clear the block. The
pins seem to be just a bit too long. This board was purchased back in
2011. It is revision A.

I'll call Elecraft in the morning, but thought I'd try the brain trust here
to see if I can complete this project tonight. No hurry, grin. It feels
like I should be able to do this, but I'm just not seeing it. I'm tempted
to cut the ends of the pins about 1 mm, but will wait till I talk to
Elecraft. I have an updated board on order, but thought I'd just put the
old board in and see if I can get my P3 running.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Line in not working.

2023-04-16 Thread Richard Ferch
A potential explanation: the LINE IN level may have defaulted to zero.

The LINE IN level is adjusted using the MIC gain control, but only when MIC
SEL is set to LINE. So, you need to set MIC SEL to LINE (which turns
MIC+LIN off), adjust the MIC gain control to give the desired non-zero LINE
IN level reading, then if you really want to use MIC+LIN on, set MIC SEL
back to your chosen mic setting and set MIC+LIN to ON.

For FT8, it would make more sense to set MIC+LIN to OFF and MIC SEL to
LINE. The MIC SEL and MIC+LIN settings are remembered separately in SSB and
DATA modes, so by using DATA A mode for FT8 you can avoid the need to
change settings back and forth as you change operating modes.

[Elecraft] K3, KAT500, KPA500 stacking

2023-03-28 Thread Richard Hill
I've read in the manuals that the KPA500 can be stacked on top of the
KAT500. I understand that the KPA500 needs about 2 inches clearance above
the amp to keep it cool in high demand situations like contesting.

I'm not finding anything about stacking the power combo (KAT500 + KPA500)
on top of the K3. I was looking for:

1. any cautions about clearance above the K3 and
2. whether the K3 is happy with a power combo sitting on top of it.

What practical advice is out there?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] Power to the Tuner

2023-01-08 Thread Richard
I normally run a K3S, a KPA500, and a KAT500, and the combination is dynamite.

Recently, I bought an IC-7300 as a backup radio, and I’ve been busy integrating
it into my station in such way that makes it quick and easy to switch from the
K3S to the 7300. Related to that integration I have a question about powering
the KAT500.

Normally, the KAT500 takes its DC power from the K3S. The easiest way to power
the KAT500 when using it with the 7300 is the have to K3S powered up but not
connected to any of the antennas. All of its other radio-to-tuner cables remain
connected as usual.

Is there any way this arrangement can hurt either radio, especially the K3S?
It’s already been back to the factory once.

If that’s safe for the radios, my IC-7300/KAT500 setup tuner power options are:

Continue powering the tuner from the K3S. —— My choice.
Temporarily unplug the K3S DC power cable from the KAT500 and plug in a
separate 12-volt supply. This semi-acrobatic feat, performed by touch alone,
must be done every time I switch either way.

I’d prefer to let the K3S power the tuner, but is that safe?

Cheers!

However, for 2 meters I’ve been depending upon a 20-year-old Icom IC-706MkIIG
that’s already had some surgery. Lately, it’s been hinting at retirement, so I
need to find a replacement.

If you have available either of these, please let me know.

Icom IC-7100
Ten-Tec 526 “6N2”
Anything similar. I’m open to suggestion.

Please use my home email: flat...@comcast.net <mailto:flat...@comcst.net>

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] Good Natured Contesting Advice

2022-11-10 Thread Richard Hill
OK, here is a bit of view from the little pistol side. I made 135 contacts
from a low EFHW antenna and 99W. I'm not loud. I'm a CW novice. I hear
OK and send OK at 23 wpm. I practice and can hear simple exchanges up to
about 30 wpm. I struggle with callsigns and complex words and phrases. I
search and pounce by listening 2, 3, 4 or more times till I'm confident I
have an exchange. Then I let N1MM+ and WinKey USB send my call and when
appropriate send my exchange. I had a number of loud strong stations call
over me, some while I sent my exchange, and some running ops abandoned me
and took the loud station. OK. Wipe that one. Try again here or
elsewhere, turn the big knob. Part of the game. 9⁸

Sometimes I was asked for a repeat with a question mark. I sent all
again. Sometimes I heard noise or QRM/QRN and nothing specific and so I
sent my entire exchange. If I hear a specific item, I sent that by hand.
When I screwed up my hand sending I let N1MM+ send (not necessary often).

One loud op sent "Dupe" so I checked and I had nothing similar in N1MM+. I
moved on, but the next time I searched that band I got another DUPE. I
sent NIL and got DUPE. We did that 2 or more times as I rotated through
the bands until I memorized his call. The advice I hear in my clubs and
here is work first worry later. But dupe checking works both ways, NIL
means not in log and for whatever reason no dupe and he maùy lose penalty
points and likely saved little time.

None of this is an excuse to play in a big contest when you are not ready
to play reasonably well. A contester's goal is to send and recieve as
accurately and quickly as possible to accumulate the most points possible,
understanding that too fast is slow, and too slow is not winning.

I listened to a straight key op sending CQ SS at some 10 wpm high in the
band on Saturday. I chose not to call because I'm terrible at slow code
and it would not have been fun. If it had been later on Sunday I might
have called. I wondered how many takers the op got? SS CW does not seem a
good place for slow straight key, but it may have been an older op with a
30s-40s check. Dunno. Nothing wrong for trying, but expectations should
be low.

Re: [Elecraft] QRP and Contesting

2022-11-08 Thread Richard Hill
The point of the SST and MST contests is to provide newer cw ops with a
contest training environment where the exchange is simple and new ops can
practice sending and receiving and other basic operations like dupe
checking in a friendly and mostly unhurried environment. Diving into SS CW
when you are not prepared and then calling a good op who is capable of over
1000 contacts elitist seems a bit childish, like a driver with a new
license calling Indy 500 drivers elitist.

[Elecraft] Y-Box For Sale

2022-11-06 Thread Richard Lawn
I no longer have an Elecraft radio so this Y-Box by N6TV is no longer of
any use. I also have a couple of cables for it. It was set up for me to
config. TX INH to HI=inh GND TX OK to allow RF output. I used it for EME
operation. I have the original configuration diagram by N6TV and I believe
he would return it to the normal wiring state for the cost of postage.

I'm asking $100 shipped anywhere in US.

[Elecraft] K3S Noise Reduction

2022-11-06 Thread Richard
Thanks to all who chimed in about this. I will be trying everyone’s advice.

I still think it’s sad that all I have to do to significantly block noise in
SSB on my old IC-706MkIIG and my IC-7300 is touch one button: most of the noise
is gone and the level of the audio itself hasn’t dropped so you could notice.

I’d told this shortcoming as been addressed and corrected in the K4.

Cheers,

Richard

[Elecraft] K3S Noise Reduction

2022-11-06 Thread Richard
Is there ANY way to make the NR feature work worth a damn? In general, when I
turn it on, the audio level drops to almost nothing, and none of the Adjustment
setting do much of anything.

My other two radios, an old Icom and a new Icom, both have very effective NR
features.

Is this a design heartbreak, or is my radio looking at ANOTHER trip to the
factory?

Firmware # UC 05.67

Cheers.

Re: [Elecraft] Recommendation for Microphone for K3s?

2022-11-02 Thread Richard Thorne
I would recommend this, headset wise.
http://www.vibroplex.com/contents/en-us/d9181.html

Much better construction than the CM-500 and the Heil Pro Set in my
opinion. It does not clamp your head like a RadioSport.

I've tried them all and the W1 is my recommendation.

I'm afraid they are simply too expensive, even if someone else is

CM500.

Re: [Elecraft] AX-1 -- with and without counterpoise

2022-09-25 Thread Richard Hill
One could also consider, "HF Vertical Performance-Test Methods and Results"
by N0AX and K7LXC, 2000. Available from Champion Radio Products or DX
Engineering.

They set this up as a reasonably reproducible test method to allow at least
somewhat comparable results accepting the inevitable variations from
location to location.

Setting up tests that include one or more of their test antennas and one or
more of the HF Pack antennas and various configurations of AX1 and AX2
antenna systems could result in comparisons that reflect some standard for
comparison and some level of relative understanding.

Especially if done on that standard pedestrian mobile test track. Hi.

Re: [Elecraft] Systematic error in spots as heard by K3

2022-07-28 Thread Richard Ferch
k3wyc said:

> ... The spotted frequency should be the suppressed carrier frequency ...

I don't think so. Most modern CW rigs that I am aware of, including the K3,
display the actual transmitted frequency on the dial, not the SSB
suppressed carrier frequency.

That is why the spotted frequency should not depend on the choice of
sidetone if the rig is tuned to the signal correctly. If the displayed
frequency on the dial was the suppressed carrier frequency, then spotted
frequencies would depend on the sidetone, but that is fortunately not the
case with most modern radios. The microprocessor in the radio takes care of
the offset calculation.

If someone has a rig without adjustable sidetone and they prefer to listen
to a different tone than their rig's sidetone, they need to be aware that
when they listen this way they will be transmitting on a different
frequency than the signal they are receiving, and also that frequencies
they spot will be incorrect.

If spots seem to be consistently to one side or the other of your sidetone,
though, my first thought would be that there could be a frequency
calibration error in your rig. An easy way to check would be to tune to the
WWV carrier with the rig in CW mode. With the dial on exactly 10.000 MHz,
the carrier tone you hear in the receiver should be the same as your
sidetone. In SSB, on the other hand, the WWV carrier should not be audible
(it should be at 0 Hz) with the dial on exactly 10.000 MHz.

There is a good chance your battery came with, or should have, advice to
charge the battery every six months or less to keep it alive.

I know we hate to read instructions...but in this case it is an expensive
avoidance.

[Elecraft] Sherwood Receiver Tests

2022-04-28 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
I am no expert but as far as I can tell any of the top radios with
narrow dynamic range above 92 db would be fine in most environments. The
k4d was measured at 101.
A few years ago that dynamic range would have been considered fantastic.
I notice that the k3s is at 106. Who is going to notice that difference.
The ergonomics on the k4d is much better once you get used to it.
Everything you need to know while operating is plainly visible. For
example
I find I like having a real time UTC clock and date kept accurately
automatically. It is also nice to see the code speed and power levels
readily visible.
etc

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Service

2022-04-21 Thread Richard Isaacs via Elecraft
Well, that’s a great question but angled to a non answerable solution.
My take, and remember I live in New York, when companies put out a new model,
some run to try the new flavour of the day. Now that the bloom is off the rose
so to speak, we look back and see or ask ourselves being the times we live
in…do we really need the new unit to begin with. My grandmother, or Bubbi for
those in the know, always told be the devil you know is better than devil you
don’t. That’s why I have always used Geico and it works for me. My K3 is a fit
for me, like a denture, custom fit as Elecraft is an Ala carte kind of company
as one size doesn’t fit all. I have the Panadapter to go with it and an MH4, a
K2, and a KX# with Panadapter. No amp as I don’t speak to people on other
planets…100 watts is just fine.
New rollouts are sketchy and costly, constant changes, recalls, and beta
versions. Parts…I thought it was law to keep parts in production for 7 years,
and…since the line is lean to begin with, why not stockpile, not everyone has
the money to upgrade. I have had Icom and Yaesu, but purchased Elecraft as I
could and wanted too. Old stuff…I have a massive collection of vinyl…4k+, my
equipment MacIntosh 4100, Klipschorns, LaScalas, Cornwalls, Heresys, SOTA

It’s also worth mentioning that if the radio and the amp are hard wired
together, changing the band using the buttons on the front of the amp
automatically changes the band on the radio.

2022-02-23 Thread Richard Donner
Hi
Well I checked the antenna and it is just as before the problem.
Is the capacitor setting normally checked by default?
This setting was not chosen automatically.

After I enabled the capacitor setting the tuner tuned immediately to a
low SWR on the low end of the band.
I noticed that now it is automatically chosen.
This has been a nice study time to figure how this tuner works. It seems
fine now.
Thanks for the help all seems well.

On another note , my k3 has reached its 15 birthday year

[Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility

2022-02-23 Thread Richard Donner
I have some question about the operate tab in the kat500 utility.
In the "others" what should be checked off?
"caps on the Ant side"
"amp key interrupt"
"attenuator"
Not sure what these things do.

I had been using my kat500 for years and all of a sudden low SWR matches
could not be found on one of my antennas. It was odd because everything
was fine yesterday.
I found by checking "caps on the Ant side" Ii could get a match in manual
mode.
I wonder if that had been checked and all of a sudden it stopped being
checked?

Also I wonder if the"amp key interrupt " was ever set properly.
How should it be set with a KPA500 amplifier all cabled up.
I did not see a simple explanation what these kat500 setting are for.

Any help would be appreciated. I think I am going for a walk

[Elecraft] 80-meter Antenna Fun

2022-02-17 Thread Richard
I’m in the process of tuning a just-finished 80-meter “triangular loop.” So
far, the early signs are encouraging.

I will use this for SSB exclusively. Being “new” to 80, I don’t yet know the
territory.

The antenna has a narrow 2:1 bandwidth, and my main interest is DX.

What would be a good center frequency for 80-meter SSB DX?

Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] K Line: Signal loss in a QSO

2022-01-16 Thread Richard Ferch
You may or may not consider this logical, but: The description of the
transmitter gain calibration procedure in the manual does not call up any
special calibration menu. It just says transmit a carrier at exactly 5.0
watts or exactly 50 watts. Apparently the firmware uses these power level
settings as a trigger to do a gain calibration.

Not wanting to do unexpected gain calibrations while operating, I have
always set my power to 4.9 watts when I want to operate QRP, and to 49
watts if I want to operate at 50 watts.

I am fairly sure I saw a post here by one of the elecraft techs about this
not so very long ago.

Re: [Elecraft] Rx-In/Out used for exteranl SDR Device?

2021-12-04 Thread Richard Ferch
To use the RxAnt In/Out BNC connectors in the KXV3, you need to select the
RX Ant from the front panel RX Ant switch. This means you need a jumper
between RX Ant Out and RX Ant In to feed the RX in the K3, with a tee or
splitter to feed signal to the SDR. If you do not select RX Ant, the only
signal that appears at the RX Ant Out connector is due to imperfect
isolation in the RX Ant relay.

Re: [Elecraft] Legal Limit With FT8

2021-11-11 Thread Richard
There's a major jerk who lives within about 20 miles of me who runs BIG power
with FT8. When he's on the air, he blots out my K3S so his is the only signal
on the waterfall, the only signal the decoder sees. When his BIG POWER is on
the air, I can't be. And he's made it clear that he doesn't care what he does
to anyone else's enjoyment. Power for power's sake is contagious.

On the other hand, I've made several 10,000 to 11,000 mile Australian contacts
with 15 watts and a hex beam at 30 feet.

[Elecraft] Legal Limit With FT8

2021-11-10 Thread Richard
I had a discussion about this sort of madness with Joe Taylor, creator of FT8
and WSJT-X. Here's what he had to say about it:

"Hi Richard,

"Yes, it's annoying when people engage in a QRO arms race to make more QSOs or
make them more quickly with FT8. Using high power is one thing when conditions
demand it, as with some 160 m DX paths, for example. It's quite another thing
when high power is not required to make the QSO, but only to help you get
through first.

"However, it has always been thus, and there's not much anyone can do about it.
As a general rule it's often useful to move up above 2500 Hz or so, audio
frequency. Or even to set your dial frequency 1 kHz higher than the default for
a band.

"We are also thinking about suggesting a "QRP FT8 sub-band" in which power
should be limited to 10 W (say).

[Elecraft] Scanning With a K3s

2021-10-12 Thread Richard
The manual says:

"Set VFO A to the starting frequency, and VFO B to the ending frequency."

This becomes tedious if I want to scan the entire 10-meter SSB segment;
cranking VFO B to 29.700 takes forever.

Is there a way I can use FREQ ENT to put 29.700 in VFO A, then transfer or copy
that to VFO B, then put 28.300 in VFO A? Can I use FREQ ENT to do the latter?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] TVI and More

2021-09-22 Thread Richard
A close neighbor was hearing through her add-on computer speakers what was
probably me on 20 meter SSB. She said she couldn't make out any words, but it
sounded like a garbled voice. After determining that it was indeed I she was
hearing, I clamped a few ferrites on the two cheap speaker cables and the
problem was solved. I hadn't had any interference problems since 1955!

I think I read here on this reflector that there is some sort of filter that I
can add to my transmission coax that will prevent this sort of thing. Can
anyone tell me about this approach to TVI?

Oh, and my neighbor, who has an Alexa thing in every room in her house, all
ganged together with WiFi, also said her Alexa was shutting off suddenly, then
coming back on several seconds later. Could this Alexa-I? I wouldn't even know
where to start on that one, especially since she has all that WiFi raging all
through her house.

All help will be gratefully received.
