Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Utility 1.14.4.10 beta test version available on our FTP site
Yes, I was typing the commands on the Command Tester tab. I notice from my P3's 28.004 oscillator signal that the oscillator is enabled immediately when the Firmware or Operate tabs are selected. However, the oscillator runs continuously while the Operate tab is selected and turns off after a delay in the case of the Firmware tab. Is there a reason for this difference? Sending firmware to the KAT500 with idle sleep enabled seems to work reliably now, even waiting for the oscillator to time-out first. The Configuration and Command Tester tabs don't enable the oscillator until the user either clicks a configuration button or sends a macro command. In both cases the oscillator stops after a few seconds of idleness, like the Firmware tab. Why not simply enable the oscillator (disable the sleep) after the utility has established communications with the KAT500 on startup, and restore the user's Idle Sleep setting on exit? If users are fiddling with their KAT500 configuration, it doesn't seem like they should be that concerned about the 28.004 signal being present. If they are using the Operate tab to monitor station operation, then the oscillator signal will be present regardless of the Idle Sleep setting. However, this begs the question of other apps accessing the KAT500. IMHO, requiring all of them to send junk commands until they get a reasonable response does not seem like a very reliable strategy. Is there a hardware mod that could be made that would shift the oscillator out of the 10m band? That would eliminate the problem altogether, allow the firmware to be simplified and greatly improve the communications reliability. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-Utility-1-14-4-10-beta-test-version-available-on-our-FTP-site-tp7586987p7587017.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX and P3
Ed, You are confusing "markers" and "cursors". The VFO A receive frequency is denoted by a green "cursor" and VFO B by a red cursor (when SPLIT is active). The markers, MKRA (green) and MKRB (magenta), are used with the Select button to QSY the K3, but they do not necessarily indicate the active frequency of their respective VFO except when that button is pressed. Page 16 of the Rev D manual has the full details. Re: [Elecraft] P3 & marker B transmit freq.
Gary, If you are willing to push a different button than MKRB, you can modify your DX split procedure by using the PF1 and PF2 buttons to execute a macro that puts turns the sub-receiver on, copies VFO settings from A to B to make sure they are on the same band and consistent, sets VFO B to be the transmit VFO and puts the rig in SPLIT mode. It also moves VFO B up 1 kHz (UPB4;) and finally makes sure that RIT and XIT are off. When the rig is put into SPLIT by the "FT1;" macro, the P3's MKRB will appear automatically If you do this, then holding PF1 instead of MKRB accomplishes everything you are trying to do. Holding PF2 restores the simplex DX configuration. Macros are programmed from the K3 utility's "Command Tester/K3 Macros" tab. I named my macros "SPLITSUB" and "NOSPLIT", which are displayed in the VFO B area when the macro is executed. The text below before the ":" is the macro label, and the text after the ":" is the macro command string. Follow the process on page 6 of the K3/KX3 Programmer's manual to create the macro, download it to the K3 and associate the PF1/PF2 buttons. Apparently, the KAT500 Utility (v1.14.2.20) doesn't send the requisite "wake up" commands. As far as the coarse tuning speed, I would say that it is much faster than 1.58. Re: [Elecraft] Need volunteers to try an even better version of KAT500 firmware (rev. 1.63) -- more accurate initial tunes
In trying to load this new FW version, I discovered that there appears to be an interaction between the proper operation of the serial interface and the "Sleep When Idle" option. If the oscillator is not running due to the timeout enabled by this option, as can be seen on my P3 at 28.004 MHz, then a serial command does not work reliably and firmware updates produce an error message about an incorrect device. >From a quick and dirty experiment, it looks like the first typed "an;" command restarts the oscillator but produces no output. The second command also produces no output. The third "an;" produces the expected "AN1;" response. After disabling the "Sleep When Idle" option, the firmware load was successful. [Elecraft] FW 4.67 and K3EXREF
I just realized that both my K3's running FW 4.67 are no longer locking to the K3EXREF calibration signal from a Trimble Thunderbolt. Specifically, the "REF CAL" config menu item does not show the flashing asterisk and moving the main tuning knob does not show "LOCKED". I have had the K3EXREF installed and operating properly with both rigs for at least a year. The Trimble Thunderbolt provides the 10MHz calibration signal to both K3's though a MiniCircuits splitter. After checking the power supply and output levels of the Thunderbolt, which were nominal, I decided to see if the K3 firmware could be responsible, since I had fairly recently upgraded to 4.67. Indeed, rolling back to 4.51 re-enables the normal "REF CAL" behavior! Re: [Elecraft] K3 Front End Protection
Fred, The best source of good information that I have found on operating multiple radios safely is the book by George Cutsogeorge, W2VJN: "Managing Interstation Interferrence". It covers all the issues with running SO2R as well as other multi-transmitter configurations, and provides techniques to measure interference and mediate it. The book is available from Array Solutions here: http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/Books/W2VJN_Interference.htm Antenna isolation is the name of the game and, particularly with QRO, requires a great deal of care and planning. I run 100W in an SO2R configuration with 2 K3's on a small city lot. My solution to the isolation problem has been the use of W3NQN bandpass filters and antenna geometries to minimize interaction. Using W2VJN's analysis techniques and employing some of the possible solutions noted by him, I can operate safely and have confidence that I am not damaging my K3's receiver. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Front-End-Protection-tp7567094p7567100.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3EXREF install in K3 build?
I'm building my second K3 with the K3EXREF option and I wonder if anyone can tell me if it would be a problem to install the K3EXREF during initial construction, at the same time as the KREF3. Re: [Elecraft] rf gain
Terry, Here is a link to a 2010 thread about this issue: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Rf-gain-tracking-main-vs-sub-td5668917.html The thread doesn't document the resolution (for me, EEINIT), unfortunately, but there is an interesting graph of the behavior by one of the contributors (HB9BRI) who also experienced the issue. Perhaps there is some information in the thread that will be of help. Did you verify that the behavior is still present after an EEINIT but BEFORE you reloaded your configuration? (I'm assuming that you did an EEINIT, of course). - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/rf-gain-tp7561676p7561793.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] rf gain
Yes, Don, an EE INIT is not something one should do "arbitrarily". It did fix a similar non-linear RF gain problem of that myself and others reported on this reflector back in 2010, so I suggested it as a solution. The process in the owners manual makes clear that a saved configuration is a very important step if one does not want to undertake a lot of parameter setting and calibration. As to running the RF gain calibration, this did not solve the non-linearity for me, but the EE INIT did. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/rf-gain-tp7561676p7561696.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] rf gain
Try running the parameter initialization process, following the instructions on page 66 of the latest owners manual. VK7JB wrote > > But I've noticed that when listening to the KX1's transmitted signal > (using my K3 as receiver) on 20m only is very raspy. > John, I had a similar experience to you (though without the 30/80 module). My P3 showed strong 60Hz modulation of the output signal on 20m and a much smaller modulation on 40m (not audible). The audio on 20m was definitely "raspy". The KX1 was connected to a dummy load via 25 ft. of RadioShack RG58 and I had no antenna on the K3. I thought the modulation was an oscillation at first, but after monitoring the KX1 output signal on my scope, I realized that the modulation had to be due to some other cause, and I suspected RFI in the power supply or cables because of the 60Hz sideband spacing. I changed my coax to a 3 ft piece of RG213. The 20m signal immediately became clean on my K3. The longer the coax, the more apparent modulation of the received signal. All signal reports that I received from QSOs gave me a clean tone report and I asked several ops whether there was any hum or buzz on my 20m signal. Nobody reported any modulation. Do you have a scope to look at the KX1 output? If not, you might want to get some on-air reports to determine if there is a real problem in the transmitted signal. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX1-new-build-transmit-problem-on-20m-tp7557147p7557182.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Rick, Thanks for your words of caution. I understand the issues and have tried to be very careful not to overload my K3. The KX1 signals on my P3 have been in the S9 region. Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation
Don, I took a look at all those components, their values and installation, and everything looks normal. Good idea to email Elecraft support. Gary's numbers were very similar to ours, so I guess the negative voltage is, as you say, a red herring (is there any other color?). If you get a chance to scope Q7's terminals, I would be very interested in the results. Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation
Don, I tried your experiment but it had no effect. I just grounded point A because it is damn hard to jumper Q7. R28 measures good and is well soldered. It has -0.25V or so on the base side and 5.5V on the other during transmit. I also tried reducing the drive pot and, while the signal definitely declined in amplitude, the sidebands were still present. Could this just be an artifact of using my K3/P3 to view the waveform? The base of Q7, which is supposed to be 0.7V, is -0.895V on 40 and -0.195 on 20. The voltage on Q7 should definitely be positive in order for it to ground capacitor CA, so something is screwy. The 20m waveform on my P3 seems very broad, but I don't think that it is due to any kind of oscillation. The signal is 20 KHz wide at about 40 dB down. Re: [Elecraft] wiring the KX1 paddle
I just finished building the KXPD1 paddle for my KX1. After examining the situation, I really felt that having to solder the wires to the plug after the paddles were on the body would be unnecessarily difficult. I decided that it would be much easier to attach the wires to the plug first and work on the proper routing of the wires to the paddle circuit boards with the stereo plug inserted in the body of the paddle. I did a lot of position testing of the paddle circuit boards and wire bending, but the results were very nice, and I had plenty of room to work. I think it was a very straightforward way to assemble the KXPD1. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/wiring-the-KX1-paddle-tp7528281p7537316.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation
I may have been a bit hasty in concluding that there were oscillations on 20m; after I disconnected my K3's 20m antenna, the 20m signal looks fine. So I may have just been overloading the K3's front end. Not sure why the 40m signal didn't suffer the same issue, though. [Elecraft] New KX1 low power and 20m oscillation
Just finished building the KX1 and the transmit testing is not going well. My only bench tool is a DVM. Power supply is a 13V battery. Ant is a 50 ohm dummy load. The receiver seems to work fine. All DC voltages on RX are nominal. On 40m TX, I get about 1.5W out. The signal is clean listening with my K3. On 20m TX, I get about 2W out but there is a horrendous audio oscillation. My P3 shows huge sidebands on the signal. All the TX DC voltages look good EXCEPT for the base of Q7, which is supposed to be 0.7V. I measure -0.895V on 40 and -0.195 on 20. I have examined all the suggested areas, but I don't find any obvious problems. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Leftover parts?
According to Elecraft, these parts are a very recent addition to the kit and their purpose is to add support to the transformer bolt. In building #401, I also discovered these additional parts and sent an email to Elecraft support. They sent me a modified page 32 of the assembly manual that shows the placement of the two flat washers, lock washer and nut at the bottom of the bolt, flush with the inside bottom rubber disk. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Changing COM ports crashes latest K3 utility
I'm running Win7/64. Dick D. has provided me with a new version of the K3 utility for testing that does NOT fault on my machine when I change the COM port FROM an invalid or unconnected port. This situation can arise after changing the machine configuration or the port that one is using to talk to the K3. The default COM port, which may no longer be valid, is picked up from the registry. Nothing specific was identified as being causative, but the exception is no longer thrown under those conditions. Re: [Elecraft] K144XV output power range
Thanks to those who responded. It is evident that my K144XV is not responding as expected to the K3's front-panel power control byreducing output down to approximately 1.0 W at a drive level of 0.1 mW. While it would be easy to blame my power meter, I have also noted this behavior with an attached power amplifier. The minimum output power floor was no where near what I would have expected from a 1 W drive if the K144XV had been providing that. I have my CONFIG: XV1 PWR value set to L 1.0. I do have a K144REFLK option installed. Anyone have an idea as to what might cause this behavior? I really need to be able to provide a reliable 5 W output from my K144XV. If the routing of the TMP cables to the K144REFLK board is critical, how should they be routed? The assembly manual is mum on this question. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K144XV-output-power-range-tp166p6668463.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K144XV output power range
My external watt meter does not agree with the power output bar graph display on the K3 except in the very middle of the power range. While turning the power control from 0.1 to 1.0 W., the bar graph shows the expected 1 to 10 display. But my watt meter display goes from about 5.8 to 7.5 W. Does my watt meter really suck, or is this a behavior that others have seen? The K144XV manual suggests that an upper value of 7.5 W is not unreasonable given the accuracy of most meters. But 5.8 W for a minimum output power seems way too high. Re: [Elecraft] [P3] P3 and K144XV
Tom, Sounds like your "Ref Lvl" is set too high. The color of the waterfall reflects the vertical position of the trace in the frequency display. If you reduce the reference level, the frequency display will return to a viewable position, and the orange waterfall will revert to blue. The reference level is per-band so you have to adjust it for each band you operate on. For my 2m setup the ref level is set at -145 dBm, which allows me to see the frequency trace when the pre-amp is on or off. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-P3-and-K144XV-tp5472582p6659797.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3/KRC2/XV144/KPA500 Combo
Hi Don, Thanks for the response. If I read the KRC2 and XV144 manuals correctly, the way this would be set up is to use the DB15/DB9 cable provided with the XV144 to connect the K3 to the KRC2 "XCVR" DB9 connector and then use a DB9/DB9 straight-through cable to connect the XV144 to the KRC2 "PC" port. Is that correct? Re: [Elecraft] ATU Question
Bill, >From page 22 of the the K3 owners manual: "Up to 30 ATU settings are saved for both antennas on every band." When you hit ATU TUNE, the K3 stores the tune settings for the KAT3 at the current frequency and for the current antenna. In AUTO mode, if the K3 determines, on transmit, that the current KAT3 tuning parameters should be replaced, it will automatically load them when you key the transmitter. You can tell this is happening because the ATU icon will flash briefly on transmit. As to how the K3 determines whether to load new parameters, I would surmise that the K3 checks the ATU "map" each time you transmit, checking whether the current set of KAT3 parameters best match the current transmit frequency. If it finds a better match, it loads them. For example, if you have previously hit tune at both 14.020 and 14.170, have been operating at 14.150, and now try to transmit on 14.050, the K3 will automatically load the parameters stored for 14.020. This is conjecture on my part, since I have not seen any documentation of the firmware algorithm. But it seems reasonable and in line with what the K3 actually does. I'm just beginning to work with WSJT/JT65B and I'm running into behavior (versions 7 and 9beta) that I don't understand: as soon as I startup WSJT, the rig goes into TX mode and stays there; I have to kill WSTJ to get the K3 out of TX mode. [Elecraft] P3 Strange Display Behavior on BSET
I'm running P3 firmware 1.05. If I have my SubRX enabled and the two receivers tuned to two different signals, my P3 cursors are displayed exactly as expected. If I then hit BSET, the P3's VFO A cursor and display (including the displayed VFO frequency) shift to the VFO B frequency, despite the fact that the audio for both RXs does not change, indicating no change in the VFO A in reality. This also results in an incorrect display for the VFO B cursor because it is displayed as though it were tuned to the VFO A frequency. Tuning the VFO B is no longer synchronized to the P3 display. Thanks, Bill, for the response. My K3 is #4181, so the mod is not necessary. Yes, -18 dB does sound excessive. Re: [Elecraft] P3 New LVL Cal Function (Beta 0.41)
The calibration procedure is very easy to do, and went as described. My XG2 signal is right on the money at -73 dbm now. I'm curious what the nominal range of transfer gain is that we might expect to see. Mine is around -18 db. What does this number mean, anyway? The release notes for this firmware says: "Added many new RS-232 commands". Are these documented anywhere; in a P3 Programmer's Reference perhaps? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ATU Tune
The power level used by the ATU Tune process is internally set to 5/10W. As for the K3 power display, during the tuning process, the scale changes from a max of 100W to a max of 10W. I can't say why your external meter appears to indicate 100W, but is it possible that your meter is auto-ranging and you are misinterpreting it? L. D. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rf gain tracking (main vs. sub)
Joe, I get essentially the same numbers as you show IFF I use the factory default calibration values. If I use my XG2, I get the Markus curve. Maybe my XG2 is defective? Perhaps someone can illuminate us on what it indicates. With my XG2 on 20m, and adjusting the main RF gain knob from full CW to full CCW, the AFV display goes from 2329 to about 18 at the 10 o'clock position, jumps to 1233, then declines to about 80. The dbV display starts at +29.3 and declines to -12.4, jumps to +23.6, and then declines to -0.1 at full CCW. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rf gain tracking (main vs. sub)
In the process of investigating this further, I tripped over a very nice diagnostic tool: the Config menu's "SW TEST" entry. This option can be set to "SCN ADC" to allow monitoring of the 4 potentiometer inputs to the PIC processor ADCs. This allows one to verify the range and linearity of the pots very easily. As expected, the ADC outputs produce a linear count ranging from 002 to 240 for the full travel of the pots (all 4 of them exhibit the same results). Those counts correspond to input voltages (from the pots) of 0.039V and 4.71V, respectively, which are essentially what I measured with my voltmeter. This method is MUCH easier, however, and eliminates any question as to what the ADC is actually seeing on its inputs. - 73, Stan - KR7C -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Rf-gain-tracking-main-vs-sub-tp5668917p5673239.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The behavior of the voltage on its wiper is exactly what you would expect: a smooth transition from 0V to 4.7V for the full travel of the knob from CCW to CW. So, the question remains, what could cause the very non-linear behavior that I observe with the audio and S meter? I'm running without PRE or ATT and the behavior is the same whether the BW is 2.8 kHz or 100 Hz. At max gain, both the Sub and the Main generate the same audio level in my two ears (precision instruments). And, as the gains are reduced, the audio falls off similarly such that they are both just about inaudible at the 11:00 position on their respective gain knobs. But the behavior on reducing the gain further is very different. The Sub remains inaudible all the way to full CCW. However, by about 10:00 on the Main gain, the response goes through a non-linearity where the audio jumps up to a level similar to about 3:00 on the gain dial. Further reduction of the main gain reduces the audio again, but never to inaudibility. Interestingly, the S meter also displays this non-linear response, climbing from S7 to S9+30, as the main gain is reduced from the max, until at the 10:00 position it suddenly falls to about S8. Further reduction of the gain does not affect the S meter level. I've repeated the RF Gain Calibration several times with both the 40m and 20m XG2 signals. I have seen no change in the behavior as a result.
