Dan's signature below is that of a musician. Always your phone number after
your name. Someone may need a bassist.
Back in my "professional" music days, someone would ask one of my band
members... "how many in your band?". Their response"four musicians and a
drummer". Need I add which one was ME?

As a ‘semi retired’ professional jazz musician (bassist-upright) I
particularly appreciated the analogy. During this last field day I was running
my KX3 and explaining to my logging assistants about pitch matching. The spot
control does a good job,but sometimes I needed to tweak it to get in the other
guys’ passband. I can’t wait to use this on my K4,whenever that might arrive!
Maybe we should start an Elecraft band… last year I was supposed to go to Spain
and do some gigs and had planned to take the KX2…maybe next summer.

Don,

I profusely apologize for the delay and lack of communication. As Don, W3FPR
pointed out, Don was and I am a part time employee. For a whole host of
reasons, that I won't go into at this time, the transition has been somewhat
slow but I am making progress.

The amount of backlog has been overwhelming to an extent. But with Don's
help we have managed to whittle much of it down.

I am not making excuses for the lack of communication and will improve my
response as I work through this transition. Poor Don is supposed to be
retired and still provides excellent support in my absence or heavy
workload.

As he noted, my wife and I are on vacation well off of the grid. I do have
some wifi here (sitting at the Tiki bar as I write this) but I am pretty
much off the grid until next week.

I do totally love the Elecraft customer service paradigm and will continue
to strive for that plateau. But it will take me a little time as I still
work a fulltime profession as well as this part time venture plus family
blah blah blah.

If I remember right, your rig was number 2 or 3 on my priority list and I
will get right on it as soon as I return. I appreciate your patience in the
interim and will be in touch soon.

Re: [Elecraft] OT-Junk Mail & Spam Robo Calls

2018-08-14 Thread Terry Schieler
I use commercial spam solutions for relief from internet email spammers. Lots
of them out there. That's all well and good. The REAL problem for me are robo
calls to my home phones and cell phone. I listed both phones on the State of
Missouri and the Federal *No Call Lists* years ago. That worked ok for a
while, then totally spiraled out of control. Spammers don't pay any attention
to the *List* and violations are not enforced.

I found a fix in an app called *NOMOROBO* No More Robo (calls). After you
sign up for the service, their server spots the fingerprints of incoming spam
telephone robo calls on your phone line. My phone rings a partial ring (.5
sec?) then the software at the server end sucks the call off my line and adds
it to their national database blacklist. The Caller Id is still displayed on
my TV screen, but before I can get my butt out of my chair, the ring stops,
telling me not to bother with the call, it's spam.

I can't remember how many years I've used NoMoRobo but I was an early adopter
and it has been working beautifully for probably 10 years now. The idea was
hatched by a couple of guys during a contest to find a solution to annoying
Robo Calls (necessary because your local telco doesn't want to help inhibit the
use of their paid services). You don't need to load your *white list* phone
numbers. There is a free version of NoMoRobo and a paid version. So far, I
have seen no need for the paid version. In all this time I only had two
callers get wrongly *captured* by the spam software and both were vendors I use
who had recently changed their phone number. Calls from my doctor's
appointment office, Trash Hauler, etc come right through.

While not affiliated with the firm that offers this (I wish I were) I recommend
looking it over and deciding for yourself if it suits your needs:

Hi Dave, + rest of list

I've not seen your "Elycraft", but we … both ElecraftCovers (Rose, N7HKW) and
me … get lots of e-mail from people wanting to "fix" elecraft.com and bring
us more business. I expect Elecraft also gets these same offers.

Both of us, for several reasons, need to maintain an old-fashioned wired phone
line. We have had the same number for about fifty years and it's published and
used from all over the world.

Here's what seems to (partially) work for us; we have an answering machine in
a speaker-phone that's audible throughout the house. In addition, our satellite
TV provider is connected to the TV set … which is usually on (;-) … and the TV
screen displays caller ID info. Perhaps ten percent of the calls are legit.

Both of us have Verizon cell phones and get -many- calls from spoofed numbers …
usually in our 406 area and often using a "local" number. Rose gets many calls
related to her Elecraft case and cover business that she -must- answer. She's
had three today … with two being spoofed.

We both use G-Mail as our e-mail provider and to G-mail's credit, we get very
little SPAM. We also use Norton ... wouldn't be without it. Our internet
provider (Century Link) is via cable.

Grant,

I always use "K3S" and "K3", and add a lower case "s" for plural.
If you look at the logo, yes, the trailing "S" is smaller than the "K3",
but not small enough to be lower case (1/2 the height of the caps).

Re: [Elecraft] Ham radio as a side dish

2018-05-28 Thread Terry Schieler
Andy,
Pick up a copy of the DVD "North Atlantic Crossing". Two young men used
what appeared to be an Icom HF rig for long distance communications on HF
air bands to contact various European airports on their route to Norway.
They installed a large, salt water fishing reel in the modified, single
engine Mooney, complete with stranded copper antenna wire. When time to
use an HF band, they cranked out just enough (pre-marked) wire from the
fishing reel to hit the resonant frequency. I can't recall where/how the
antenna wire exited the aircraft but got the impression that, among other
mods (extra capacity fuel tanks, etc) the antenna device was approved for
that flight.

If it were as simple as you suggest then I think a few of us would be doing
it. Picking up banners with an aircraft in flight is a skill that most
pilots don't have. It would be far better to use a retractable antenna.
However, a legal installation of any sort of antenna extension/retraction
mechanism on an aircraft with a standard airworthiness cert would be a
significant challenge.

These bulbs are specifically low-RFI.

I have no more information. For all I know, they fix the garage door RFI by

Re: [Elecraft] Cruise Operation

2017-09-25 Thread Terry Schieler
My last cruise on Royal Caribbean was, I believe, Sovereign of the Seas (?). I
had no plans to actually operate on the ship, but I met the Captain during the
opening night reception and we had a chat. Upon finding out my interest in
amateur radio, the Captain said "hey, you'd like to meet "Per", our Chief Radio
Officer (also a ham). We had a nice visit. The next day a courier appeared at
my stateroom door with a message from the Chief Radio Officer offering me a
personal tour of the ship's radio room. I was let up to the bridge by a
steward and Per, the Radio Officer took me into the radio room where there
walls full of older HF gear which he quickly told me they don't use much
anymore (mostly VHF and satellites now). He let me sit at the gear and tune
around. I got some nice photos too. Huge signals from everywhere and lots of
fun.

Never hurts to ask, even if you've brought no gear. Per and I carried on an
email exchange for a few months after that.

Re: [Elecraft] Drone antenna launch Field portable! Changed topic.

2017-08-31 Thread Terry Schieler
I have been using a Blade CX2 RC helicopter to fly antenna wires up above tree
tops for quite a few years now. I had added an LED nav light kit to the CX2
(red, green plus white landing light) and it runs off a simple on/off toggle on
the transmitter. I installed a small servo on the belly of the chopper that
uses the servo arm to pull a piano-wire pin out of a U-shaped block of balsa
wood. The fish line antenna leader is hooked over the piano wire. I installed
a "Y" adapter to the navigation light circuit on the chopper and used it to
fully activate the add-on (parallel) servo, which released the antenna lead-in
line when it was properly hovering above the target tree. So, when I flipped
the nav light toggle to ON, the hook wire pulled back and released the fish
line. Took some experimenting with weights on the leader line to plow through
some of the dense branches, but finally got it pretty consistent. This started
years before the word "drone" was common in R/C.

Plain old radio-controlled helicopter (remember those?)

John,

Do use a separate receiver in order to activate the release or is there an
extra slot on the drone receiver?

I'm assuming your using a bind - n - fly drone. If it's home brew with your
own receiver then it probably has a spare slot that you can program a switch to?

No, Brian. I have done none of the software mode settings. I’ll take another
look though and more testing.

Thanks and 73,

Hi Terry,

I have actually disabled all those settings in WSJT-X. I don't let WSJT-X put
the rig into data mode (from the Radio tab - MODE = NONE). I don't remember
the power settings by band on the Audio tab within the settings dialogue. I
setup my KX3 ahead of time for digital modes (using a macro) and leave it that
way for all data modes (FLdigi, WSJT-X, etc.).

Do you have any of these options selected? Have you tried disabling them,
setup your sound card, etc. as per Don's et al. instructions and then changed
bands back and forth?

regards,

Brian

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Odd ALC behavior

2017-08-07 Thread Terry Schieler
I have been watching this thread carefully since it began, and, combined with
my experiences over this past weekend, am now more confused than ever. Don,
W3FPR recently (again) gave very succinct instructions for getting a good
starting audio point for the ALC readings. I had previously not been able to
get the "four bars solid, fifth bar flickering" on my K3S for JT65 for weeks
now, no matter what I did. Bought all the books and read all the articles
(Yes, they reference rigs that work differently than my K3S. Understood. I
get it) Yesterday I decided to follow Don's instructions (as bolstered by
those from Bob, K4TAX). Thanks to both fine gents.

I set:
K3S Mode to Data A
Band: 20 Meters (14.076)
Windows 7 Audio level OUT from computer to about 50% of scale (USB CODEC)
Line-IN level on the K3S to 30
PWR slider in the WSJT-X software to about mid-range
Set the K3S power out to 30 with rig's PO control

During a TEST transmit (using the TUNE button in the software), I adjusted the
WSJT PWR slider (downward) on the software to finally achieve the four bars
solid and fifth bar flickering. I then switched to normal TX, the ALC reading
held fast (four solid fifth flicker) and I made a couple of QSOs. Life was
good. Power was still at 30, COMP 0 as set. Seemed that Don and Bob's
comments were spot on. I thought my K3S was good to go for all K3S digital
modes, so I touched nothing. Then I changed bands with the K3S band switch to
15 meters. Did a test TX on 15 with the Mode (Data A), Power Out (30) and
Comp (0), Software PWR slider settings still untouched. But upon *normal* TX
on 15 M the ALC had jumped to 6 solid bars. Nothing I tried would get it back
to the desired "4 solid+5th flicker" on 15M.

Then I went back to 20M. But, the ALC there had also changed and was now 6
solid bars. It had changed somehow. Power out still 30, Comp 0, etc. Also,
now the WSJT PWR slider had moved back up above its previous mid-scale settings
as well. I had carefully touched nothing but the BAND and TX TEST switchs on
the K3S.

Aren't the DATA A settings saved per band after doing these adjustments for
digital modes? Why would a simple band change alter the rig's ALC setting as
well as the PWR slider in the software? Did the new Freq somehow change the
Window's Line Out and the software's PWR slider? Should I expect to have to
reset the settings every time I use one of the JT and FT digital modes?

I think I'll try bouncing signals off commercial tow boats on the Mississippi
River instead. Must be easier. "CQ the Rhonda May...Calling the Rhonda
May, Over". ;o)

[Elecraft] FW: OT A/C RFI

2017-07-19 Thread Terry Schieler
More interest here than I expected on this, so I've decided to post my
direct response to Erik here as well.

Terry, WØFM

Hi Erik,

I just replaced my two 20 year old Lennox units with 4.0 Ton and 3.5 Ton
Trane units. Before the installers left I asked for a chance to check the
radios in the shack for RFI. The AC compressors are outside the basement
shack wall and the coils are inside about ten feet from the radios and feed
lines. Attic antennas all around for the moment. No detectable noise on
the new Trane units. And for what it's worth, the Lennox units (same size)
were also RFI free for 20 years. Good luck with your project and stay cool!

Terry, WØFM

Thanks for the particularly timely reply, Don. I spent the past weekend

fine for years. Using Data A, AFSK, 45 baud, I can cleanly copy RTTY and
Transmit via VOX, but, for the life of me, I cannot get the ALC set to "4 bars
solid with the 5th bar flashing". I can get it to set to 3 bars solid or 5
bars solid but nothing in between, no matter how sensitive I try to be. Seems
I recall someone else with this exact issue on her a few weeks ago. I have
spent this morning trying to find that post as I'm pretty sure his problem was
solved. I am setting the ALC via the Mic (Line) Gain. I checked that Data A
had reduced Compression to ZERO and TX EQ flat. Any suggestions?

Don and Ronnie,

Let me see if I can help by pointing out the differences between the Elecraft
transceivers K3, K3S, KX2 and KX3 and other transceivers in the use of data
modes.

The following points are directed at soundcard oriented data modes.

1) Use DATA A instead of the normally recommended USB. While USB will work,
you normally have the SSB set up for voice, including compression and TX EQ.
The data modes automatically turn compression to zero and turn off TX EQ.

2) For RTTY, use AFSK A - that is specifically designed for RTTY and defaults
to LSB which is normal for RTTY.

3) Audio levels - ignore the internet advice to adjust the power with the audio
level. Adjust the audio to illuminate 4 bars solid on the ALC meter with the
5th bar flashing. This is the "NO ALC" point for these Elecraft transceivers -
the first 4 bars are present to allow you to properly adjust the audio. Once
adjusted, you should not have to change it unless something changes it in the
computer.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Box

2017-02-20 Thread Terry Schieler
Back in 2013, I purchased a custom shipping box from Dave Haller, KA1W, of
www.hamradioboxes.com with which to ship an Acom 1000 amplifier that I was
selling. It was pricy, but so was the amp. I would not have purchased one for
just a half a K3 round trip to Elecraft Service, but if you are doing
DXpeditions and moving your gear around regularly, his custom boxes were
outstanding.

Update: I did a quick Google search for Ham Radio Boxes and the most recent I
can find is from 2014 saying that Dave had taken a "temporary break" from the
box building business. Sad, as Dave was excellent to work with.

See my (and other) eHam review: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9938?page=2

Generally it's supposed to be "K3S" (capital). Please use that in email.

However, on the radio itself, and in the owner's manual (etc.) we use a

This just \

I'm looking forward to seeing a blog post with the official "S" scaling :)

quantities of K3Ss. Those of us involved in those exchanges were clear when
Wayne "suggested" that we use K3S (capital S) for the new radio when posting
here to avoid confusion. The problem exists because, for marketing and
registration issues, Elecraft elected to use a *smaller font capital S for
the S in K3S*. If you think about it, you will notice that we have no
choice of a font selection here on this reflector for a smaller capital S.
So, the obvious fix for here was to use K3S (capital S) for the new radio.
I think Wayne tried to explain that back then and some new users just don't
understand why, and consequently, attempt to mimic the artistic expression
of the new radio graphic logo. If you look closely at the Elecraft web site
you will see that much of the new literature and reference to the K3S on the
site has begun to evolve into the K3S (capital S) probably for the sake of
clarity..

Wayne may jump in to clarify, but that's what I recall.

Due to the odd way Elecraft chose to label the new K3s, I would request that
when referring to multiple radios, use the terms K3's or K3s' rather than
simply K3s which implies a single radio.

Re: [Elecraft] DATA-A tx freq offset with digital modes

2016-09-23 Thread Terry Schieler
I agree, Eric. I started in ham radio in 1962. I love tapping into the new
technology but it's not as easy as you grow older. My son continues to beat me
up over the fact that I still have my newspaper delivered every day. Tramping
through the snow and rain to retrieve it. Sometimes it's wet and it gets
thinner of content each week. But I'd much prefer plopping into my big leather
chair with my morning paper than trying to read the same thing on a computer
screen. Same goes for books, magazines and instruction manuals. Works for me.

You haven't adjusted to on-screen technology, because paper technology is
familiar. That was the main point I saw in Guy's note. Many of us hams are hung
up on analog technology, and some of us insist on imposing this on digital
technology such as the K3. We want the K3 to work like the old analog stuff
did/does. Older people have to relearn things to deal with new technology as
new technology. Younger people who grow up on the new digital technology will
likely do the same thing when they are older and technology again changes.

I wrote professionally for half my life (autos and motorcycles). I started on a
manual typewriter then an electric. When the TRS-80 came out and Michael
Shrayer's Electric Pencil became available, I switched completely to composing,
editing and submitting electronically by about 1980. Affordable printers were
crappy 40 column thermal dot matrix at first, then mostly paper dot-matrix. I
learned to do as much as I could on the screen to avoid those abysmal printers.
It turned out to be a good decision.

All that said, I love my analog (mostly) technology K2's. hi.

Hi all,

While I can state that Ron's comment about the K2 is typically true, the static
tolerance of thru-hole ICs and transistors is lower than it was back in 1998 or
even 2006 (OK, I picked those years as a guess). Many DIP mounted devices are
really SMD devices with DIP leads and can be as static sensitive as the devices
in the K3 and KX3.
Despite the "touch grounded metal" instruction in the K2 manual, I do see some
repairs come in with failed firmware ICs, and rarely, but not zero, some
'normal' ICs on a new build.
My best guess is that those parts were damaged due to a static charge.
Whether the builder did not follow the "touch a metal ground" or not I cannot
tell, all I know is that it failed.

When possible, use an anti-static mat and wrist strap when handling ICs and
transistors, especially during periods of low humidity. Do not work on carpet
without them and do not wear nylon clothing - and don't shuffle your feet on
the floor while working.
The minimum should be a wrist strap connected to the green-wire ground in your
house. You can use a banana plug in the round pin of an electrical receptacle,
but before you trust it, get one of the receptacle testers and make sure that
green wire ground is intact - some are not.

Hi all,

The K-Pods are coming!

Those of you who are not timid with macros: Please send us your favorites
for possible inclusion in the next release of the K-Pod owner's manual.
We've already included a bunch, but I just know there are some great
examples out there we haven't thought of.

For newbies:

A "macro" is a series of one or more short commands to the radio that act as
stand-ins for switch presses, knob turns, etc. They can do really
complicated things like custom SPLIT/sub RX/mode/frequency/power level
setups. You create these little gems using K3 Utility, then send them to the
K3 so the K-Pod has access to them.

For further background and examples, refer to the Elecraft programmer's
reference:

Adding $100 or more to add a touchscreen ui to a radio provides very little
value in my view, is silly. The radio cost to value ratio is very low (meaning
the value is high). The only exception I can see would be integrating the P3 as
an option (hopefully enhancing with a micro computer/ssd for logging, digital,
extended macros...etc, basically what I'm doing now with a raspberry pi).

So that is if the cost is comparable to getting the P3.

Without the features of the P3 integrated; who changes settings so often that
the included programmable macro buttons aren't enough?

Well, touch screen UI have also moved over to commercial products, the military
and airline pilots also use touch screen UI communication devices. If they are
good enough to be used on commercial aircraft and in military applications,
then it sure is good enough for ham radio.
Touch screen UI panels having become so prolific, that they have dropped the
cost enormously, resolution is picture sharp and reliability is extremely good.
Touch screens have huge potential, and almost unlimited versatility. If you
need more knobs or buttons on your rig, due to new features having been added
no problem with a touch screen.
Just a firmware update to add a knob, button, slider or meter onto the screen.
The problem with conventional rigs, is you run out of physical knobs and
buttons when features are added to the radio. I see this in my KX3 - some knobs
have three functions, and to try and remember what each knobs second or third
function does, becomes difficult.

Food for thought :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Best Place to Sell Equipment?

2016-02-26 Thread Terry Schieler
Jose,

You might also contact a ham radio club or two in your area and see if they
have a classified section in their newsletters. Attracting more local interest
may make a sale quicker and less painful than one involving shipping the gear.
Just a thought.

[Elecraft] K3S, K3s, K3's, K3s'....etc. K3S for the reflector please.

2016-01-05 Thread Terry Schieler
There are a number of new users on this reflector since the announcement of the
K3S transceiver last summer. Please indulge me a bit of bandwidth to update
the newcomers to a request made back then by Wayne.

During the initial announcement of the K3S, we all shared some laughs about how
the new rig would be discussed here. Folks trying to emulate the logo font of
the new radio were using a lower case "s" after the K3 (K3s) in discussions
here. The result was a flurry of entertaining posts reflecting K3S, K3Ses,
K3s, K3's, K3s' and the confusion it might create. Singular, plural,
possessiveand it drew Wayne's attention. He commented that there had been
discussions within Elecraft about the possible confusion caused by the logo
font chosen for the rig. (Logos need to be *unique* in order to be
trademarked, registered, etc.) It was all good-natured fun but we all
understood that confusion could persist.

Posters continued attempting to replicate the logo design of the K3S here on
the reflector and could not do so. The reason was that the "S" in the stylized
K3S logo is also a capital "S" but of a smaller size font. There is only one
size capital "S" font available on this reflector, so Wayne jumped in and
requested that members of the reflector refer to the new rig as the K3S, not
K3s (K3 capital "S" *not* K3 lower case "s") in an effort to minimize
confusion.

Standardization of that nomenclature for the sake of clarity on this reflector
would be a big help.

Happy New Year!

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Lulu sale on KE7X books

2015-12-02 Thread Terry Schieler
I was up in the air about the best KE7X publications to purchase for my
particular application. I ventured to Fred's website www.ke7x.com and found
that he had created a nifty new home page, much easier to navigate than in the
past. You'll find a handy chart that helps you match your needs with the
proper book(s) and shows which vendor has each book available (not all vendors
have all books) and in what format. The FAQ section addresses practically
every scenario possible with the Elecraft products and Fred has invested
notable effort in helping make sure you don't inadvertently purchase more of
his publications than you really need. It cleared up my questions quickly.

You won't find those kinds of "don't buy more of my products than you really
need" helpful hints often.

Hi Matt,
The KX-Line book is up-to-date for the KX3 and KXPA100 material but the PX3
chapter is missing the recent keyboard terminal information. I'll make up an
addenda for that but probably won't incorporate it in a new edition for a while

Re: [Elecraft] Stereo Speaker for K3

2015-11-24 Thread Terry Schieler
Hi Steve,

I have used a pair of Motorola HSN4018C mobile radio speakers with my K3 for
years, as well as now with my new K3S. They are tailored for
communications-grade voice frequency response. They are black and look great
next to the rig. They are not inexpensive if you order them new, but your
local two-way radio shop will likely have these or something similar in the HSN
series that were recovered during commercial mobile radio removals. You can
often get a decent price on a pair.

[Elecraft] K3S - Method to print K3/K3S configuration files from K3 Utility

2015-10-13 Thread Terry Schieler
I have a recent configuration file from my former K3 (#474) saved in my K3
Utility. I was hoping to print out that file and use it as a guide to setting
up my new K3S, knowing better than to simply load (restore) the old K3
configuration file into the new K3S radio. Fred, KE7X, points out in his fine
book that, at the time of the book's first printing, no means were available in
K3 Utility to print out the configuration files. Fred was kind enough to note
in the book that Ham Radio Deluxe has a way of converting the configuration
file to a text file. I used HRD to do exactly that. It was quick and easy,
but I could not find a way to save the text file or to print it out. I also
tried a print screen, which failed.

I was wondering if, since Fred's comment was published, someone else realized a
need for this and has come up with a way to copy old configuration files for
future reference. Has anyone come up with a way to copy a K3 Utility
Configuration file to text that I can print out? Ideally, I would like to see
the K3 Utility program allow me to save/print ALL the radio's current menu
settings for comparison to the published defaults.

[Elecraft] (K3S) Transferring configuration from K3

Elecraft has advised me that my new K3S will be shipping in several days. I
believe I recall some comments here regarding saving my current K3

like the suggestion some time back was to change the serial number in the K3

Thanks to all who responded directly. I just knew there was a catch.
Calibrations are saved by the K3 Utility and those calibrations (as well as

[Elecraft] [K3] AM FM Filters

2015-06-26 Thread Terry Schieler
I am building a K3S on paper and have a filter question. I am told that if I
want AM and FM transmit capabilities I can just order the 13kHz FM filter and
save the price of the 6kHz AM filter. Certainly seems logical that the 13kHz
FM filter bandwidth could handle the 6kHz AM signal (no interest in ESSB).
Just curious as to whether there are any unforeseen bumps in the road in doing
this. Makes me wonder why anyone would order the AM filter if the FM would
cover both.

Thanks.

Or, we could replace the *entire* VFO A display with the word SPLIT during

display. VFO B is what you care about during split TX.

Thanks Don,

I did read the instructions wrong. I was distracted by the idea that the
KXPA100 would be plug and play with the companion KX3 transceiver. Since it
is unlikely that I will be able to find a cable with an RCA plug on one end,
and a 2.5 mm stereo plg on the other, without tip wire, it looks like a custom
job.
I don't know if I would have a use for the features of the KXCABLE, since I
don't have a high power amp, a KXAT100 or a computer in my shack.
I do appreciate the fact that it would be necessary to modify connection cables
for unknown brand X transceivers.

Sal,

The main problem with kites is safety. One doesn't always know when the kite

I wonder if anyone's ever used a kite in a field to keep a wire up.
I see kites a lot in the summer, along belt parkway here in Brooklyn and they
seem to stay in one place for long periods of time.
I'm sure one can use 12 or 14 AWG wire and let a kite carry it pretty high. Of
course you need wind for that but being near water (salt water, no less)
there's usually wind present.
Hmm.

Another idea that may be used to place a wire with a lot of precision is one of
those RC quadricopters that are becoming wildly popular.
A little servo claw to release the wire or just to place it's apex where you
want it...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band Edge Marker Option (was Out of Band Xmit)

2013-08-20 Thread Terry Schieler
My needs are much simpler than those involving international frequency tables,
license classes, memory locations, etc. I haven't thought this through
thoroughly so I don't know all the ramifications. I'll leave that all to
someone smarter than me.

I know that I am quite embarrassed to be told that I have just transmitted
outside the legal US band (usually involves DX pounces) and would like to be
reminded if my inattention causes me to do that. I see *self enforcement* here.

I could envision a Band Marker that could be set by the K3 user personally.
Tune the VFO to the band (or sub band) edge you'd like to be notified of. Say
14.000. In the menu you find Band Marker. Select that option and the
software creates a tone (beep if you will) on 14.000. If you wanted to be
alerted that you are passing the high end of the 20M band, simply set your VFO
to 14.350, and, in the menu, select Band Marker. BEEP created. Same process
to mark the CW, RTTY, etc sub-band if that's your desire.

The K3 owner could be free to opt for doing this or not, as well as for which
bands, license privileges or mode sub-bands he wished. Nothing forced. All on
the operator (and sw guys like Lyle, of course). No software tables, band
lists per country or license classes involved. Nothing to force a transmitter
shut down. It would simply be an *operator assigned* aid for the *convenience*
of the individual operator.

Of course, this would not help direct frequency entry band errors, instant
spots, etc. Just thinking through my keyboard. ;o)

Thoughts? Someone will probably tell me that this already exists in the K3.
;o)

Good idea Buddy. I originally put band edges for each band into the first 10

take up multiple memories. I'm going to switch those to the 4 Quick Memories

Re: [Elecraft] Antennas in the attic

2013-08-14 Thread Terry Schieler
When I built my present (brick and frame) home in 1996 I was fortunate enough
to work with my builder and architect and had them design the attic to be void
of all HVAC ductwork, AC wiring, low voltage wiring (alarm and telephone) and
stereo speaker leads. The builder thought I was a kook (not entirely wrong).
The builder made me two catwalks out from the center of the attic to the far
ends so I could get to dipole ends to adjust for resonance ($800 total).

Today, in my attic, I have:

Alpha Delta-DX-EE (40-20-15-10)
Homebrew WARC fan dipole (30-17-12)
3-ele 6M yagi on rotator
Stacked AEA 6M halos
10M groundplane
2M Msquare Eggbeater
70 cm Msquare Eggbeater
5-ele 2M yagi (vertically)
2M/440 satellite AZ-EL array
2 DC to daylight Discones
Delta loop on and SGC-230 coupler
6M dipole
2M yagi - 2.3 GHz BBQ Grill AZ-EL sat antenna array

All compromise antennas, obviously, but they all work and each is better than
a sharp stick in the eye.

In years past, part of my work involved signal propagation (VHF/UHF)
predictions and measurements.

For 150 MHz paging service, the generally accepted in-building attenuation
figure was on the order of 10 to 20 dB compared with an outdoor measurement in
the same location. 10 dB or so for typical timber framed residential
construction, 20 dB for reinforced concrete commercial or multi-unit
residential construction, and 30 dB in some particularly difficult environments
with many interior walls and with high local noise, such as a telephone company
switching center.

Jack,
I just sent my K3 (474) off to Elecraft service after wrestling with that same
problem. My TX output was suddenly all over the place. The K3 power out bar

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Erratic SSB Power Output

Hello K3 Reflector.

I have an issue with my new K3/100 #7482. On SSB the peak power output isn't
stable. The SSB power output fluctuates about +/- 15% of where it is set, but
occasionally spikes to much more. The issue is on all bands but seems worse on
12/10m. I have tested the rig connected straight to a 1kW Bird 50ohm load and
have tried 2 different linear power supplies. The problem is present using the
two tone test feature, microphone or direct PC audio fed into the rig.

The real problem is: I set up my Acom 1000 at the legal limit here (400w) and
the power output is all over the place, sometimes 150w, then maybe 500w, then
300w, then all of a sudden the power can spike to 1kW+. I operate mostly CW.
Things seem more stable on CW, but compared to my previous Jap rigs (FT1000MP,
FT990, TS850) etc, the power output is very difficult to properly regulate. On
my previous rigs, I'd set them up to drive the Acom to a certain power level
and they'd run for hours rock solid without a peep.

I've had an e-mail exchange with a friendly Elecraft Guy which resulted in me
redoing the TX Gain calibration, he said the numbers looked good, but the
problem persists. I am curious to see if anybody else has this issue and knows
of a fix? As it is, the rig isn't much use to me.

Cheers

Re: [Elecraft] OT: AM mode

2013-07-17 Thread Terry Schieler
Correct, Ken. Then there is the capture affect of FM. Stronger FM signals
could wipe out a transmission from another aircraft causing concerns. With AM,
there is a greater possibility to pick out a weak signal in the presence of a
stronger signal and avoid incidents. A real plus if you are flying the

VHF/UHF aircraft radio has always been AM, and is likely / certain continue to

There is usage of SSB on HF primarily ... but it's still AM. (;-)

Re: [Elecraft] OT- Radials for Vertical Antenna

2013-07-02 Thread Terry Schieler
I'll have to go on record as disagreeing with Matt, W6NIA's statement below.
Elevated radials *are* better than buried radials only *if* the vertical is not
ground-mounted and the radials are tuned to resonance for each band.

With ground-mounted verticals, the radials need not be tuned and do a better
job if a large quantity of them are spread out on or below the ground. I would
not use elevated radials with a ground-mounted vertical.

Elevated radials are better than buried, but more radials are better than a few
or none. A good minimum number (for each band) would be 8.
Many studies on this have shown many more than 8 per band (like 25) is much
better and, of course, much harder and expensive to field.

I have a 33' vertical made of heavywall aluminum that has 7 radials for 40m and
another 7 for 15m. It works well enough, but generally I use it as an RX ANT
for the K3's sub rx. In my own case, the radials are buried for aesthetic
reasons. Plus, I don't want to need to duck down when mowing. There is no ATU
at the base of this vertical.

When using this antenna for RMS Winmor (for Navy-Marine Corps MARS) just below
40m, it had no trouble handling all states west of the Mississippi with 150W
drive.

I would say that you should do what you can to maximize the radial count, even
if it means changing your location plan.

[Elecraft] K3 - Output Power Bar Graph issue?

2013-07-02 Thread Terry Schieler
I hadn't used my K3 (#474) for a few days when I checked into the Elecraft SSB
net on Sunday. I immediately noticed that the Power Out bar graph was peaking
only around 60-70W. It normally peaked closer to full output on voice peaks.
Later I checked it with CW and it was still only hitting about 75% output. I
confirmed the power control was set to 100W. I did an Auto tune before each
test and this problem exists on every band. Both my LP-100 and my LP-100A
digital watt meters showed about 120W output (both were factory calibrated by
Larry). But the K3 bar graph still shows 25% lower than full output. This I
also confirmed into a dummy load. I had not observed this before Sunday. All
else appears to be functioning properly.

I might be one or two software versions behind but have done all circuit
upgrades. Is this a known indication of an upcoming problem, or do I simply
need to recalibrate the K3's Power Out meter?

Correct. I totally understand that, Ken. My company ships stuff all day. I
am aware of the labor, benefits, overhead, hidden costs, etc. a company deals
with. But I believe I correctly, I recall small item purchases that I've made
from Elecraft Parts and others where they were safely shipped to me in a small
padded envelope via USPS. If they were shipping me small parts in a cardboard
box with bubble wrap and the like, I'd expect the cost going up to cover that.
I recently had two, fairly hefty VFO knobs for a boat anchor project that were
shipped to me via USPS in one of the $0.50 padded bags for $2.71.

I didn't intend to poo poo shipping and handling costs that are passed along to
a customer, but merely point out that for these particular little bits of
lightweight molded plastic, the USPS may be more attractive to a purchaser.

I have a special appreciation for what Elecraft, Powerwerx and Rose (and YOU)
all do every time I walk back to my shipping department. ;o)

say -I- pack and ship them for her. (:-) I'll wager we're one of the
larger shippers here on the reflector ... with the exception of Elecraft.

Powerwerks is most likely losing money at $6.49, and it has nothing to
do with the cost of the item(s) being shipped. They will have numerous hidden
costs ... all shippers do. It just depends on how deeply one wants to burry
them. If one lived in the same town where they're
located, I doubt that you could drive there to pick up an item without
conduming $6.49 in fuel ... maybe more. One's time also has a finite
value.

There's address and return labels and likely a label printer to print them,
bags for the item(s) and probably another label on that bag. Then there's the
shipping packaging, be it a small padded envelope or a carton. If it's a
carton, there's the cost of peanuts or other cushioning material. Bubble
pack is suprisingly expensive. (;-) Padded envelopes cost
$.50 to $2.50, depending on the size, even bought in 100 lots as we
do. Don't forget the shipping costs ths shipped pays their suppliers
when they purchase shipping supplis

Oh, and there's the cost of paper and ink for the printer that prints the
packing lists and labor costs of the person(s) who does the shipping operation.

I'll almost guarntee they're losing money at $6.49.

Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?

2013-06-10 Thread Terry Schieler
A few years back, someone posted a suggestion to help spread the word about
our hobby. Take old copies of your amateur radio periodicals and drop them
off in the waiting rooms of your health care providers, car care centers,
state license offices, etc. Six months ago I put retired copies of CQ and
QST on the table in my company's customer waiting areas among the usual
reading.

Today they are all gone. Disappeared. Stolen (and shared I hope). I will
replenish the supply.

I did not report the disappearance. ;o)

I guess the added good news is that our customers didn't have to wait very
long and therefore had to take the ham mags home with them to finish reading
what had caught their interest.

how do you compete with Facebook and Youtube? Maybe we can't. So instead of
competing we offer alternative ways to have fun and communcate and use
Facebook and Youtube to promote the alternatives.

Ham radio doesn't need to be resecued. It just needs more participation
from a younger group of people to really thrive and grow against the
competition for more bandwidth. Use it or lose it, as they say. Coordinated
efforts from all involved are necessary: ARRL, clubs, and local publicity
in schools and colleges can all be helpful. Kit building seems to be
driving a resurgance of interest in electronics and computers, and that can
lead to an interest in amateur radio. Mentoring youngters who might want to
become Hams works too. QRP CW is yet another avenue to attract new Hams
with low-cost rigs and simple antennas.

There are endless possibilites for recruitment to rescue amateur radio,
much more than when I got my Novice ticket forty-seven years ago. But it
will take more than just on-the-air ragchewing and posting to the choir in
Ham radio forums such as this one. It will take a concerted effort. Join a
club. Join the ARRL. Participate in high-profile community services that
involve amateur radio. Become involved.

Thank you for your revival in interest and your post.

Re: [Elecraft] cases

2013-06-09 Thread Terry Schieler
Ah. Reminds me of the 60's when my band could not afford the top of the
line Anvil road cases and resorted to buying amp case parts from Fender and
others to build our own racks. Bob Heil custom built our mixers, EQs and
mains and monitors for us. Another local musician, Jay Barry, began making
rack road cases for musical groups in the area and many ham clubs put them
to good use outside the music business.

Back to roll your own. Thanks Clint.

Re: [Elecraft] RES: TS-990

2013-06-05 Thread Terry Schieler
Back in the late 80's I ordered a TS-950 sight-unseen from a catalog. It was
to replace my trusty TS-180SAT. When it arrived I thought they'd accidently
sent me TWO 950's in the same box. I had not paid any attention to the size
and weight specs of the rig when I ordered it. It was so huge, there was no
room for anything on the front of the operating desk once the 950 was in place.
I boxed it up and sent it back. I was stronger then but knew that I would
(hopefully) be growing old and would need help moving that beast.

I recently looked at the specs of the 990 and knew it would be a back-breaker
too.

[Elecraft] [K3] Sudden Hi-SWR on low end of 40M

2013-02-18 Thread Terry Schieler
Yesterday, during the CW contest, I noticed that my K3-100 (#474) suddenly
began to stutter during CW transmissions on the low end of 40 meters. I
hadn't noticed this before, including Saturday, the first day of the contest.
My CW transmission had a chattering sound something like the brap of a
machine gun (and no, my fist isn't *that* good). My first thought was RF
getting into the radio, but, I've never had RF issues before and, again,
nothing in the system had changed:

K3 LP-100A SWR/Power meter 4 position Ameritron RCS-4 antenna switch
dipole.

I have never found a frequency on 40-10 meters that my K3's internal tuner
could not handle with the only antenna I've ever used with the rig. But the
tuner could not eliminate this chattering yesterday.

After the contest I did some checking and noted the following:

1. At 100W, the chattering only occurred from 7.0 to almost exactly 7.1 then
went normal again. CW was normal on all other bands.
2. If I backed the power down from 100W to 50W the chattering CW below 7.1
went away and all was normal again.
3. I checked my DX-EE parallel dipole and it was without damage or change.
4. All coax connections in the feed line chain were tight.
5. The meter on the K3 indicated a *tuned* SWR of 1.2 at 7.033 during the
chattering but the LP-100 meter showed 4.5 and up at the same time and its
alarm sounded. I'd never even heard the alarm before.
6. I put my MFJ 269 analyzer on the PL259 that connects the 10-40 meter dipole
to the K3 and swept the bands. No band had an SWR greater than 2.4, which the
K3's tuner should (and always has) handle well.

All in all, the rig performed extremely well in the contest except for this new
chattering issue. I logged many stations that I could barely hear. Now all I
can think is that the K3's internal tuner somehow is losing its memory. So I
went back to each band and did a few manual antenna tunes. SWR on the lower
end of 40 meters tuned to 1.2 in several places but the chattering CW continues
there with power above 50 watts. Are there any tests I could perform to
determine if the memory function of the K3's internal tuner is intermittent or
otherwise suffering. Thanks.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: G5RV's and variants

2013-02-14 Thread Terry Schieler
Interesting observation, Ken. After seeing a upsurge of interest in G5RV
antennas discussed on various ham radio reflectors (and noting that the
interest seems most enthusiastic among newly-minted hams), I honestly feel that
the recommendations from one new ham to the next seems to be based on
trumped-up theory that the G5RV is an all-band antenna. Almost every new ham
would like an inexpensive, easy-to-build, low profile antenna for all bands.
While we know that the G5RV *can* be made to work OK on several bands with a
tuner, I feel that this new found G5RV interest is a self perpetuating rumor
spreading like a bad cold among newcomers. No one seems to want to explore the
technical issues at hand.

Nice to know that someone has saved the original article.

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: G5RV's and variants

It's already been pointed out that the original article by G5RV indicated that
the antenna was for 20M only.
I have the original article in my files.

I've always wondered why builders of the antenna simply don't make an open-wire
fed Zepp and stop there.
Why add a magic length of coax ... without any kind of impedance matching ...
to what would otherwise be a Zepp? Yes, the length of the coax portion of the
feeder acts as an impedance transformer ... on 20M.
On other bands, all bets are off. (:-)

The antenna requires an antenna tuner to operate on bands other than 20M. Many
tuners contain a balun so one has the option of either coax or balanced line
feeders. Why not avoid the coax-to-balanced line splice with it's almost
certain mismatch losses and connect the balanced line portion of the G5RV's
feeder directly to the tuner? If the tuner as no internal balun, one can be
made or purchased.

I once knew a local who actually coiled the coax portion of his G5RV's feed
system behind his desk and then connected it to his tuner. The end of the
balanced portion was within inches of his tuner's balanced line connections.

The G5RV certainly qualifies as a cult antenna.

Google Seasonde for more information.

Rose and I have been lighthouse hosts for the Oregon State Parks Dept in the
past. Several of the parks on the beach have Seasonde equipment housed in the
plumbing areas between the men's and women's bathrooms, and I have photos of
these installations, including their licenses and antennas. The ones in the
Oregon State Parks are operated by the University of Oregon. These ...
and CODAR ... operations are confined to specific (narrow) bands.
They do not operate in the amateur bands.

Ionospheric sounders, on the other hand, may appear anywhere in the HF
spectrum. Some sweep upward at a steady rate and others spray random bursts
throughout the HF spectrum. There is one operating in Boulder, Colorado right
in the city behind the NBS campus. It's been there for decades. Weber State
(Utah) has one in continuous operation. Sounders are everywhere, even in
Antarctica. PSK31 users often see them in their waterfalls, but few
recognize them for what they are.

2012-12-29 Thread Terry Schieler
That's exactly what I experienced on #474 just after I built it. The washer
rattled. There were a few supportive posts here alluding to the same issue
at that time. However, Elecraft support said it was something obvious that
I had done incorrectly in construction. I went back and retraced all the
hardware assembly on my front panel and all was consistent with the manual.
Trying to tighten the knurled nut further with my fingers simply deformed
the front panel until I released the pressure. All the buttons and other
projections were equal in their distance from the front panel and were
visually spot on. All functioned perfectly. I ended up putting a small
glob of hot glue on the washer to stop the noise. Slept better that night,
if nothing else.

Re: [Elecraft] With all the problems...

2012-11-15 Thread Terry Schieler
Thom,

The K3 issues that you see on this reflector are here because issues can be
brought here and resolved quickly. And I think if we could categorize all of
them we would surely find that many of them are simple configuration issues or
operator error.

I love my K3 and, in my mind, there is no other company like Elecraft. And, no
other reflector like this one. Dive on in.

2012-11-14 Thread Terry Schieler
And, unfortunately, ATT chooses to use Yahoo to process email for ATT
customers, so ATT email domains like mine that end in @swbell.net,
@sbcglobal.net, @bellsouth.net, @att.net, etc are as vulnerable as the accounts
that actually say Yahoo in the address. Don't let the fact that your email
domain does not say YAHOO lull you into a false sense of security. I found
that out the hard way.

Maybe ATT is listening.
Naw.

Some people need to take some Internet Security classes comparable to the

with Hotmail, in the frequency of which their customers get Hacked on a
per-year basis.

Many of us have auto-Spam-reject. Those compromised email addresses get put on
a Blacklist. Automatically. We don't see it happen and we don't get email from

Their address sent out 100,000 Spam Emails, world-wide, and garnered them a

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 atu anomalies - or it is me.

2012-09-20 Thread Terry Schieler
I have experienced exactly what Mike has described below. I found that auto
tuners in my old Kenwood TS850-S/AT, my LDG, my K3 and others seem to get to a
reasonable match then stop. In most every case a second press of the tuner
button would, in just a few milliseconds, give a totally flat reading. My
SGC-230 reacts the same way. If you are insistent on a flat SWR reading, try a
second press.

I use an LDG tuner at a remote location from my rig. I see something similar to
what is being discussed at times. Sometimes it will stop tuning (perhaps
quickly) when it gets a match slightly below 2:1. Other times I get a much
better match. The reason I assume is the algorithm used in the tuner. An SWR
ratio of 2:1 is not bad at all. The difference between 1.3 and 1:1 really is
not worth talking about. Part of the situation is an optimization in the tuner
algorithm. Some tuner programmers assume you would prefer a quick tune to
something below 2:1 rather than waiting a few seconds more for what may or may
not be a better match.

 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=310401470794ssPag
eName=ADME:L:OU:US:3160 ) First, it IS stereo in and stereo out.
There is some confusing wording even on the packaging but it is
indeed stereo all around. Someone suggested that the chip MAY not be
as advertised. As this IS from China (with a Taiwanese
chip) and having dealt with Asia for decades, I opened it (not
recommended for the inexperienced, it is glued shut).
It is indeed the Via Vinyl Envy USB VT-1620A chip (
 http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/audio/usb/vt1620a/index.jsp ). The
Via driver from their web site loaded and recognized the chip so I am
100% sure it is genuine. It should be capable of:
 a.. 2-channel ADC with 90dB SNR, 16/24-bit supporting
 44.1/48/96/192kHz sample rates a.. 2-channel DAC with 95dB SNR,
16/24-bit supporting 44.1/48/96/192kHz sample rates I have some
photos if anyone is interested. It is a nice little board and looks
 to be well made.
Both the input (Mic) and output (Headphones and SPDIF optical) are
standard 1/8 stereo jacks with the output having the additional
optical coupler mounted just past the electrical contacts.
It works great with HRD but I have no way of testing it for I/Q use
 as my
KX3 is still a dream and my K3 is not equipped for I/Q out.
Maybe someone better equipped and more knowledgeable could put this
little guy through some tests??? If so contact me. FYI my QTH is Watsonville.
BTW, I have no financial interest in this at all. This is all just
FYI and me getting ready for my KX3 when the CFO gives me the go ahead.

At the Boxboro Hamfest, Elecraft was demonstrating a P3/SVGA with the latest
Beta firmware. They were using a wireless keyboard which plugged into the USB
connector on the back of the P3 -- it was working flawlessly (including macros
that allowed the up/down arrows to change the VFO A frequency in 10Hz steps).
I asked Eric what keyboard he was using at the show and he confirmed it was a
Logitech K360, which sells for about $30 including the tiny USB receiver.

In my shack, at least, wires == problems, clutter and RFI. So anything
wireless is a blessing.

This is probably obvious to everyone, but I wanted to share that combination as
something known to work.

Correct, Bill. In my younger day's I had wired a micro switch to the bass drum

Along this line, I think I see that the Line Out level (Mic control) in Data A

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Using PSK 31 with my K3, and Ham Radio Deluxe

Why would one want to set the mode to USB when the K3 provides DATA A mode
which is the same thing except that compression is automatically set to zero,
the equalization is turned off, and the input level can be set to Line in and
the level remembered so it is almost automatic once set up.

In answer to the original question, check the data submode - that is a per band
setting.

Make sure that mode is set to USB for the 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters.

For some reason, I can key up my K3 on 15 meters, and get power out.
When I send out a CQ, the red TX light comes on, I get a audible
tone, and power out to my antenna. The CQ message shows up on the
 message screen in the
DM780 program. When I try to send text on 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters,
I get the red TX light, but no audible tone, and no power out of the
K3. I can't see that I have anything set different for the 15 meter
band than the others. Any ideas?
