Re: [Elecraft] KX-3/2M transverter

2024-02-26 Thread Tim Tucker
Assuming you're using the Elecraft mic with the up/down buttons - turn the
buttons off in the radio settings. There is a known and reported bug in
both the KX3 and KX2 that has never been fixed that causes this problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 missing features, was OT: The 4-track mind

2023-12-10 Thread Tim Tucker
I got tired of waiting for special subtraction NR and decided to do
something about the lousy K4 NR on SSB. I bought the BHI Dual Inline NR
module and the results are impressive. I will publish a video soon. Anyone
who says that better NR won't help you make more weak signal contacts,
especially if you're in the big city, doesn't know what they are talking
about on this subject. That plus the decreased fatigue factor...

The last thing we heard from Wayne about missing features was that the
Remote Software would be released as Beta in Q1 2024. Every other ask about
other features has been met with radio silence for months. Expect more of
the same at this point.

[Elecraft] Modifying the AX2

2023-04-28 Thread Tim Tucker
For those of you who have successfully modified the AX2 for a higher band,
do you have any tips for disassembly of the coil? Desoldering the top
looks like it is easily accessible, but I can't quite tell how to get at
the bottom of the coil to desolder it for removal. Is there a simple trick
I'm overlooking?

Assuming the Power Supply is sufficient, the next thing you should do is
the KX3 + KXPA100 Power calibration. I did this for a fellow ham and it
solved a similar situation:

Re: [Elecraft] External Preamp & RX ANT IN/OUT

2022-09-01 Thread Tim Tucker
I do this with the MFJ 1026 in between the RX IN/OUT. I can use the 1026
preamp by itself with the RX ANT gain turned to zero or I can put the RX
antenna in line for dual VFO/Band RX or use as a diversity RX setup. There
is another thread about the effectiveness of diversity RX - I was playing
around with this setup last nite on 20m (propagation was pretty good) and
was hearing stations from HI to the East coast on the 80m RX loop almost as
good as the inverted V and some were better. Plus, this setup gives me
the option to null out unwanted interference and on lower bands (40m seems
most effective) reduce QSB.

Both of the solutions proposed show audio out specs of 192khz, but mic-in
specs of only 48khz.

[Elecraft] USB sound recommendations for KX3 I/Q

2022-07-01 Thread Tim Tucker
Does anyone have a recommendation for a portable-sized USB sound card
adapter to use with the KX3 I/Q? I had an older Diamond with 192 khz input
that I gave with the sale of K3, but I can't seem to locate any new devices

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-13 Thread Tim Tucker
Several years ago, I published a short article and accompanying video
comparing the original KX3 heat sink to the CoolerKX model including a
basic report on cooling performance. This one has since been discontinued,
but is similar in design to the PAE KX32 model. I never obtained the
updated Elecraft version, but I would be very (pleasantly) surprised if it
could match the performance of a well designed heat sink such as these.

Thanks Don. He says that you're the one that built it for him and has been
back to you a couple of times (for what, I'm not sure). I'll ask him for
the serial number; it's the K2/100 with DSP and SSB, as well as the KAT100
to go with it.

[Elecraft] K4 Notch AM doesn't work?

2022-03-09 Thread Tim Tucker
I just got the K4D up and running. This morning I tuned to the local AM
broadcast station I listen to, which often has an annoying tone right on
frequency (The K3S heard it, too). With the K3, I would just manually
notch it out. With the K4, I turn on manual notch, spin the notch
frequency dial, but nothing happens. From memory, the interfering tone is
around 2Hz, but I can't seem to make it work on AM. Is this a feature that
isn't quite working on AM as expected yet?

Thanks,
Tim

[Elecraft] Kx2 or kx3 with ax1 and digirig ft8

2022-03-03 Thread Tim Tucker
Has anyone successfully used this combo? I bought the digirig to cut down
on cable mess when travelling. I can RX fine but on TX can't seem to get
output audio set to where it drives the rig properly without what seems to
be excessive RFI, even with the power level set low. The apparent RFI
causes garbled tx...i can hear it by pulling the speaker cable and
monitoring on the rig. Any insights would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] D-104 Mic Element Replacement

In the original post, he stated that he specifically did not want an
electret element, has found the dynamic replacements and is not interested,

offer what he is looking for. So I stand by my original statement with the
following qualifier: There are probably some old stock or salvage crystal
elements out there somewhere, but good luck finding them.

Re: [Elecraft] Configuring DXLabs Suite, Win4K3 and K3 for FT8 etc.

2021-11-10 Thread Tim Tucker
If you're just going to use WSJT-X (or JTDX, which is what I use) for
non-contest / casual operation on the main FT8 frequencies, I don't think
using the split/fake-it option is necessary. Contesting is a different
thing. To get started with casual use, just use the TX/RX split option on
the main UI. I've also had mixed results using JDTX with a serial pairing
emulator (I use Eterlogic, but have tried several) and Win4K3. It mostly
works fine, but I have noticed that over time the TX/RX timing sequence
starts to become "off"...I've only done light troubleshooting on this so
far, but I know it's not a CPU horsepower problem. So when I'm doing JTDX,
I usually just use the HRDLogbook host and leave Win4K3 shut down.

My 2C.

Re: [Elecraft] Notable SSB QSO (HD8R)

2021-11-03 Thread Tim Tucker
While I own both the KX2 and KX3, when I was trying to work HD8R on 40m
with an Inverted V in the early evening here in SoCal on FT8, there was a
HGE pileup. In my case, the K3 (upgraded to K3S) with the KPA1500 was
the trick. It took me an hour and a KW, but I finally got through. So I
guess the story here is that, depending your circumstances, Elecraft has
the tools to get the job done :)

Re: [Elecraft] K4 video - what display is in use

2021-08-19 Thread Tim Tucker
Another example of why having USB-C output on the K4 would be extremely
beneficial. One USB-C cable to the external screen would supply not only
video and power, but could enable touch screen capabilities, allowing the
user to control the rig from the much larger screen if desired. I'm not
sure if any code changes would even be needed to enable the touch screen
support, since the rig already supports it on its internal screen.

As it stands, you could probably get the touch screen to work using a
USB/USBC adapter, but now you've got 3 cables for that external screen
instead of one. I really hope Elecraft gets the USB-C upgrade into the
backlog soon.

Re: [Elecraft] Mods required of Elecraft Gear for use on MARS frequencies.

2021-08-13 Thread Tim Tucker
Contact Elecraft directly and send a copy of your MARS license. I did MARS
for several years and never had a problem getting the mod apps for Elecraft
gear. They even used my feedback on the frequency ranges to ensure that the
radios were usable on the necessary frequencies.

Re: [Elecraft] Plug on KPA-1500

2021-08-05 Thread Tim Tucker
If the ask of the electrician was to change the 110v outlet to 240v, his
response will be - you can't do that. If the request was to add/pull in a
new 240v circuit, he will be able to do that assuming your existing panel
supports adding the circuit.

Re: [Elecraft] K4D #150

2021-06-24 Thread Tim Tucker
I use a Heil GM5 mic, with the gain and compression adjusted so my lips
have to be almost touching the windscreen to drive the rig. When a fan
blower from a big amp is going right underneath the rig, there is a limit
to gain and compression adjustments that can be made to get rid of that
much background noise. Plus a room with hard floors makes the problem
worse (although I do have throw rug down). This is the type of environment
where downward expansion shines.

Phase Inversion: Perhaps I wasn't clear: For some reason with my setup,
this Heil GM5 mic produces negative deflection on a power meter when using
AM. Example: you set the AM carrier at 25 watts, expecting modulation to
100 watts, but instead you observe 25 watts deflecting to 15 watts. I
don't know why that occurs, but I do know that flipping the Invert phase
switch solves the problem.

Downward Expander is the most valuable, phase inversion (on the iPlus) on
AM (when needed), and I've found that the compressor just works better (at
least on the K3). There are other minor interesting features, but the
reader can do their own feature comparison

Your comments about the EQ are interesting to me. I continue to use a
W2IHY audio stack into my K3, because while the 8 band EQ works well in the
K3, the other features the EQPlus brings to the table are hard to beat. As
I wait for delivery of my K4, one of my ponderings is if I will finally be
able to eliminate the external audio stack.

Waiting patiently... :)

elements that can be used: the vertical, vertical with extension, a length
of wire, etc. Whether or not a tuner is required to obtain an acceptable
SWR is going to depend a lot on what you intend to use for the radiating
element. If you're planning on using the antenna with one of the vertical
elements on 40m, you're going to need to use the tuner in the KX2...which
will just fine.

The folks who have commented about using just a wire and binding post as
the preferred setup are not taking into considerations the various
operating environments that someone might be in. I frequent desert and
mountainous areas in SoCal that have no trees or bushes of any meaningful
height. In those cases, using a man-pack type of vertical (like the
Chameleon) is a very convenient antenna to use with a KX2 or KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Help with the KX3 and FT8

2021-03-05 Thread Tim Tucker
Using FT8 with the KX3 is pretty simple. I've used it with both the
standard USB and USB DATA A mode. Hook it up just like any other digital
mode, adjust the volume on the rig and level out on the PC, look at the
meter settings in the software and make contacts.

Don't make it more complicated than it is - try it, adjust, and have fun.

Mine does that too. What works for me is to tweak the mic gain up and then
back to the same level and it starts working normally. Seems to me like
there is a firmware bug with the radio that hasn't been figured out and
addressed yet.

Re: [Elecraft] Difference between a K3 and a K3S

The new I/O board was also an option that was sold separately as an upgrade
to the K3, as was the KXV3B, where the pre-amp was located. If you find a
K3 with all those upgrades plus the synth (like mine ;), it's pretty close
to the same thing as the K3S.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Thoughts on MFJ-1026 or any other phasing box

2021-01-07 Thread Tim Tucker
I have one and also have a small horizontal receiving loop around the
perimeter of the property with the intended purpose of picking noise
generated by the neighbors' stuff. The MJF unit works if you can
adequately pick up the noise through the receive antenna. I made a video
of it that I put on youtube, but the video actually turned out pretty
poorly because you just can't hear the noise I was demonstrating
eliminating in the video. Oh well. When I originally put this in, I was
using it to eliminate both a rogue plasma tv and also the neighbor's pool
pump. Both of the offending devices have since been replaced so I don't use
the MFJ 1026 as much, but it's definitely a nice tool to have in the box.

I have kicked around the idea of putting up an active receive antenna for
it but am concerned that I won't be able to place that antenna far enough
away from my regular HF antenna with legal limit usage. I've always
thought that this type of functionality could be built into the K3/K4 since
it already has a separate RX input. Maybe Elecraft would consider it in a
future OS upgrade feature for the K4?

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware development

2020-11-23 Thread Tim Tucker
Tim,

I'm an owner of 3 Elecraft radios and am a huge fan of the products. But
one thing that the last few years has shown is that Elecraft does not have
a great track record of developing new features or technologies into their
existing transceiver products. They release updates and patches for
various issues, and certainly did release new features early on for the K3,
but a lot of the ideas the community suggested went unanswered. I
understand why this is, and hope that it will change with the K4, but
ultimately the K3, KX3, and KX2 are largely the same product that they have
been for the last several years.

I'd be up for that. The KX3 is my favorite radio. After I got the KX2 and

Re: [Elecraft] list submission, using ham radio deluxe and logic with k3 and a laptop with only com3

2017-03-01 Thread Tim Tucker
I have used LP Bridge in the past but found that it crashed too often to
suit my tastes. I am currently using VSPE 64 bit on two machines (for the
past 2 years) without any problems.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Product suggestion

2017-02-14 Thread Tim Tucker
I'd go for something like this. The problem I have with the P3 is that
it's a great concept packaged in a pre-2010 UX and we're encroaching on the
year 2020. . One tweak to the suggestion: It's shouldn't be VGA out -
that standard and associated video resolution is dead as dead can be. It
needs to be stepped up to a modern video monitor interface and resolutions

Re: [Elecraft] P3 "Point and Click"

2017-02-13 Thread Tim Tucker
What is this "mouse" think you speak of? I've moved on to using NAP3 or
HRD with the touch screen :) It works really well on DigitalMaster with
the digital modes: Touch the waterfall, start typing.

Actually, that's not entirely true...there are just some navigation
elements that do work better with a mouse. But not having point and click
with mouse is one of the reasons why I never did the P3, either.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m external amplifier

2016-07-28 Thread Tim Tucker
You can call the owner and talk to him yourself and make your own
determination on where they're made. He has his name, address, and email
address right there - email and ask for his phone number. I know quite a
few people (including myself) that have purchased several of those power
supplies direct from him and have not had any problem with RFI. I have
also purchased one of the chinese versions that look the same and threw it
out almost immediately because it was so bad. If you bought one direct
from him that was noisy, I'd call him up and send it back for him to
replace to test out his advertised 2 year warranty.

Not difficult to power, at all. Just buy two of these 50 amp units and run

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 2m external amplifier

2016-07-28 Thread Tim Tucker
I've used mine with the Mirage B-320-G quite a lot. It works great, both
FM and SSB with no issues. I've also used it with a little Tokyo Hi-Power
35 watt amp and had no issues, either. There really isn't anything
complicated about getting the KX3 2m going with any amplifier - just make
sure the one you choose will deliver the power you're looking for with 3
watts or less input.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/K3S noise blanker performance greatly enhanced (at my QTH) -- need testers

2016-02-03 Thread Tim Tucker
I did a quick 'n dirty cell phone video of the results of this on SSB. You
NEED to use headphones to hear the difference because the cell recording
has crappy audio. This test is done on 75 meters, dialed into a plasma TV
generating noise. There is no intelligent signal present - just the noise
floor and the plasma tv. In this test, I found that a DSP NB setting of
2-3 worked best - incidentally, is usually use 2-2 or 2-3 on a daily basis
but I've never been really happy with any of the NB settings.
Incidentally, I also tried it in the video with the AGC turned ON and that
had good results, as well.

I need to find an actual intelligible signal to do this on, but the
preliminary results are quite impressive. I'd LOVE to have a DSP NB
setting that would activate this without having to permanently alter the
filter settings. Here and watch for yourself

Wayne,

What is the difference in configuration to trying this on SSB? Do we make
the same settings change or change Filter 1 if we have the 13Khz filter?
And how are AM and FM affected?

I've got the type of noise you're referring to here from local plasma TV
interference...I'd love to try this on SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] suggested PC???

2016-01-05 Thread Tim Tucker
I haven't had used a "real" (old fashioned) serial port on any PC that
controls radio equipment in probably 10 years. It's really not necessary
if you purchase quality USB/Serial adapters (no fake chipsets) where
needed. The only PC I have with a old-fashioned serial port is an ancient

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DSP processor speed

2015-11-09 Thread Tim Tucker
While I appreciate the input from Wayne on the K3's programming
architecture (as well as the facts on the power consumption
characteristics), the reality is that many of us have identified other rigs
that have implemented NR in a way that produces results that are much more
satisfactory. Comments from those that don't seem to have a use-case for
NR aren't really applicable to this particular topic, either.

Personally, I find the NR capabilities of the KX3 to be among the best and
most flexible that I've ever experienced, but also find the K3's
capabilities to be fairly anemic in comparison. I would love to see the
KX3's approach implemented in the K3 - that would make for a VERY nice
upgrade, IMO.

[Elecraft] For Sale: Large padded Port-a-brace case perfect for your K3/K2

2015-08-10 Thread Tim Tucker
All,

Before I put this up on ebay, I thought I'd offer my Port-A-Brace camcorder
soft case up to the Elecraft community. This is a very nice, durable soft
case with removable padding that is large enough to hold your K3, coax,
accessories, and everything else you probably need for a day in the field.
I've attached a link to the specific make / model, which retails for over
$200.

Mine is in excellent condition and I'm offering it for $125+shipping

https://www.studio-amg.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=Porta-Brace-CS-DV4R

This is a great, padded case for any travel radio plans.

Re: [Elecraft] Mac utility with K3S Puts K3S in TX mode!

2015-07-24 Thread Tim Tucker
I use my K3 with a Mac and use it with both the Elecraft Mac utility and
Windows apps without problem. I'm using an FTDI-based USB Serial converter
with it. The first thing I would check is the type of USB Serial cable
you're using: There have been many fake Prolific cables sold over the
years and those can be very problematic, even causing the type of behavior
you're seeing.

FWIW, I just tested the latest Mac utility and it worked fine for me.

The K3 has a TX donut hole around the 8.2 MHz IF. I think TX is
locked out from 7.5 to 9.0 MHz (if memory serves). The KX3 has no
such restriction, being a Zero IF transceiver.

Elecraft customer support can assist you with the unlock programs
needed. You may have to supply your MARS credentials, but I'm not
sure how that is handled today. It's been a while since I unlocked my
  radios here.

Except for the K3's IF range, I've found no problems with TX and RX
from around 2.8 MHz to 25 MHz. KBPF3 use is recommended though, so
that you have enough gain between ham bands. Otherwise, the
sensitivity falls off in between bands. Note: There is very little
MARS / SHARES activity above 20 MHz.

I'm also using the KX3's 2m module to work an above-and-below MARS VHF
repeater split, plus the odd set of simplex frequencies NMCM has
  around 2m.

Again, from memory, Elecraft specifies performance inside the ham
bands. I don't believe there are any published specs for general
coverage. I haven't found any problems with between-band operation -
plenty of sensitivity and dynamic range, etc.

Re: [Elecraft] Auto Notch Revisited.

2014-07-31 Thread Tim Tucker
I agree with the majority of your assessment. I also brought up the Auto
notch issue several years ago and haven't seen much, if any improvement.
As a result, I nearly always just use manual notch. I also have the same
complaint with the way the NR in the K3 works. The KX3 implementation is
far superior, IMO. I've actually considered coupling an AF DSP speaker
product from West Mountain Radio to the K3 to overcome the K3 autonotch and
NR limitations. I've used one of their speakers mobile for many years
coupled with my IC-7000 with a lot of success.

On Thu, Jul 31, 2014 at 2:01 PM, wa9fvp rep...@willcoele.com wrote:

It's been 2 years since there were complaints on this forum about the K3
auto-notch. Apparently it was never fixed.

The other day I was working a Ham in Tel Aviv when a carrier came on and
covered his signal. The Auto notch worked well but the guys voice was very
 distorted. To me that's unacceptable.

This year at the Dayton Hamvention I talked to someone from Elecraft about
the DSP problems and he agreed that the auto notch needs some improvement.
I think he was a the product manager.

Back in the early 90's I worked with another Engineer on a project we
 called
The Hamblaster. I published two articles in QEX (October 1991 and January
1992). We developed a PC based sound card that connects to the receiver's
audio and performed, among other things, an auto-notch and noise reduction
(NR). In our DSP software, the auto-notch was generated by summing the
inverted NR output to the input signal. Whether it's a noise reduction or
an auto-notch we still used a software algorithm called the LMS (Least
 Means
 Square).

Most Ham transceiver use the same LMS algorithm and I never heard distorted
audio when the notch was engaged. That's especially true with Yaesu, Icom
or Kenwood. I'm not sure about the other American brands but I bet they are
 OK as well.

My second complaint is the K3's NR control. Most other manufacturers have
an analog like control that simply changes the NR level. I don't
 understand
the logic of having several steps from F1-1 to F4-4 and F5-1 (mixed) to
 F8-4
(mixed). I would rather have two separate settings. F0 to F9 for the
 level
and if you want a to fiddle with the delay, D0 to D9 in the main menu. I
think the level control on other radios is simply a mix of the input signal
with the NR output and is similar to the K3's mF5-1 to mF8-4

To me it sounds as if there's a dynamic range problem on the K3 whereby the
numbers in the math are over-ranging when the notch is engaged and is
causing a flat-topping in the audio signal. But that's just a guess!

I hope someone at Elecraft reads this and gets the ball rolling to fix the
 problem!

All,

direction (Thanks Lyle!) The problem was that at some point I had
accidentally bumped the setting in the config to tell the radio that I had

everything was back to normal.

I just went through the same thing with my KX3. The problem was caused
by HRD. If you're using HRD try moving the Low Pwr Slider to 12Watts and
see if that does the trick. You will see ATU on the KX3's screen. Also the
KX3 menu will drop the .X and become just ATU MD.
I really like HRD for logging but it doesn't get along with KX3 very
 well.

I had posted the same issue on this list just two weeks ago. This has been
reported to HRD and will be fixed in the next version.

If you don’t touch the “high Pwr Slider”, the KX3 works OK with HRD.

DM780 hangs when asked to transmit through rig blaster advantage + KX3,
but that is a non-KX3 issue.

I use it with NavyMARS. Are you sure you're using the latest version?
Mine has K3_DV listed under RIG which is what I use successfully.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker buzz - But which external speaker ?

2012-11-06 Thread Tim Tucker
Sorry Joe, but I'm with Fred on this one, as well. You're speaking from
what you believe to be true based on specs you're reading, but it's obvious
to me as one who has actually used various speakers on the K3, including
the COMSpkr, that you don't have as complete a picture as some of us who
have actually tested this.

I love the K3 and wouldn't trade it for another rig, but it's not perfect.
It's ability to drive external speakers is one of the examples where it
does not excel. Compared to other rigs, it basically sucks . Period. I'm
young compared to most of you guys and have no hearing loss and have quite
a good reputation amongst my friends for having an ear for what *sounds*
good. After trying quite a few different external speakers setups with the
K3 and not being happy with the overall volume output, I decided that the
K3 was probably too finicky with what it needs for speaker impedance and
decided to just go with a set of powered external speakers and be done with
it. The COMspkr is so damn loud that it practically blasts me out of my
den if I turn it up much. I don't like to use headphones if I don't have
to, and with the COMspkr, I rarely need to.

Regardless of what you think the specs say, you need to try this for
yourself and make an informed decision.

That's right and the amplifier is not any stronger than the amplifier in
the K3. There is no value to using a set of 3W per channel amplified
speakers on a transceiver that provides 2.5W per channel by itself.

I've used a pair of $5 speakers from surplus cellphone remote kits on
the K3 that sound as good as any amplified computer speakers (and I've
used a lot over the years). If one is going to use amplified speakers
use speakers capable of significantly more *clean* power than what is
essentially a low end commodity product.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker buzz - But which external speaker ?

2012-11-06 Thread Tim Tucker
Or, one can simply choose to pay an extra $20-$30 and bypass all of the
fooling around by trying to find the right combination and just buy
something that others have proven that works. Sacrificing the Line Out for
external speakers is a pretty lousy solution, IMO.

You originally replied that the COMspkr wouldn't work any better than the
internal speaker, however I know from personal experience that it does
exactly that. Take off your engineer hat and put on your consumer hat.
For some of us, spending an extra couple of bucks to just be done with the
whole problem (that shouldn't exist in the first place) is worth it. I
don't need or want to go execute an algorithm to figure out which speaker
will allow me to hear the rig at an acceptable volume. If you like doing
that, no one is going to criticize you, however, not all of us feel like
going through that exercise.

My own experience is that I tried a bunch of external speakers with the K3
and the results sucked - in fact they were worse than other Icom and Yaesu
rigs sitting on the bench at the same time using the same speakers. I got
tired of fooling around with it and decided to purchase the powered COMspkr
and was satisfied. Are there better solutions? Perhaps. Do I care? No.
My problem is solved and I spend time enjoying the radio instead of cursing
at the volume output of the K3.

*IF* one feels the need for an external amplifier, bypass the internal
amplifier by using the Line Out and high cut filter to drive a better
amplifier - something capable of 10W per channel at 0.01% THD instead
of 3W per channel at 1% THD like the COMSpkr. Alternatively, set up
the external amplifier with a 16 - 32 Ohm input impedance, set the K3
to low AF gain to keep the LM4950 in the cleanest part of its design
range and use the external amplifier to provide the power gain.

Just like RF power amplifiers, audio amplifiers are all about selecting
the right devices, using proper design and bypassing, then matching to
 the right load.

current to drive the speaker without saturation or clipping. The audio
chip used in COMspkr and other 3W per channel computer speakers is
simply no better or cleaner than the LM4950 used in the K3 - they all
show high THD when operated at maximum output level because they just
can not source the current without driving the outputs into saturation.
That is nothing more or less than simple physics.

 Subject: Rollup rubber keyboard

 Hi again Adrian,
Postman just delivered that cute little rubber roll-up keyboard. Took
exactly 30 seconds to fall in love with it. Also, even without any
 ferrites
on it, no RF problems apparent even with the KPA500 running 600+ out on
 RTTY
and the other one would lock up. I did pick up a whole bunch of type 31
snap on ferrites that are about 1.5 inches long and a couple of them killed
the problem on the little silver KB. This rubber one is going to be great
as I do a lot of the local hamfests as a demo guy for Elecraft, taking my
own equipment and showing it off with a tripod mounted homebrew antenna. I
usually wind up working some pretty decent DX on RTTY or CW during the
demo's and I never run more than 5 watts out at a hamfest to make sure
nobody gets an RF burn if they happen to grab the antenna while I'm
 transmitting.

This roll-up KB has a much better feel than I really expected and is really
easy to type on. I think I'll order 3 more of them to have one for each
laptop and a spare if one fails.

 Thanks for the info.

No bending, no grinding or filing. Only downside is your KX3 looks like

Actually, black vinyl tape would probably do better, and would blend in

Note - this method is done most easily by separating the cover halves, but

That is easily cured by separating the top and bottom (you'll have to
  unplug

the metal just below the speaker, bending it gently outwards. Repeat and
check the fit with the top cover until you have a comfortable gap and a

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RX audio degradation with ANF

2012-05-18 Thread Tim Tucker
ANF is the common use abbreviation for Auto Notch Filter. A lot of rigs
use that nomenclature.

The K3's ANF on SSB has not worked correctly IMO for several firmware
releases. Someone posted a fix a while back that involved resetting back
to factory settings, rolling back to a previous firmware, reloading all
your settings and then loading the current firmware. That's a lot of work
and I was hoping a more elegant fix could be implemented in a firmware
update.

In my experience, the issue isn't so much extreme distortion on the signal,
it's that it doesn't notch the offending signal properly. To reproduce,
watch your RX signal with a strong carrier on a waterfall with a computer
application like MixW. Turn on the ANF and you'll see that the K3 notches
on either side of the offending carrier, but not actually right on the
carrier. If you have good ears, you can hear this yourself. The manual
notch works fine, of course.

I haven't tried the latest beta firmware, so I don't know if this issue has
been addressed yet. It needs to be addressed, though.

Re: [Elecraft] Turn on turn off transients

2012-05-01 Thread Tim Tucker
My K3 thumps the powered external speakers pretty good when I turn it
on/off using the power switch on the front of the rig.

What tooth rattling turn on and turn off thump from the K3?

Never heard that myself. I use the K3 power button to turn off and on.
Some folks I know turn off the power supply. Maybe that's different?
Exactly how do you turn rig on and off?

Re: [Elecraft] D-Star

2012-04-28 Thread Tim Tucker
There are quite a few D-STAR repeaters and hot spots on the air that are
non-Icom and required no patent to build. D-STAR is an evolving technology
and it wouldn't be too far fetched for an enterprising company to build a
radio using similar chipsets and firmware currently being used in the
repeaters and hotspots being built by hams.

I would hope that Elecraft would not add D-Star support; I think it's
against the spirit of amateur radio, and particularly contrary to the
kit culture, to have an on-air specification that an individual amateur
is precluded from implementing without obtaining a patent license.

Re: [Elecraft] New KAT500 pics from the Visalia DX convention

2012-04-24 Thread Tim Tucker
Any plans soon on a legal limit (1.5 KW+) auto tuner that can handle 10:1
SWR? Reading the site, it looks like the KAT500 will the power, but only
at 3:1 SWR.

Re: [Elecraft] DX Clusters

2012-03-09 Thread Tim Tucker
If you would like a visual DX Spot/Cluster, check out this one:
http://www.worldwidedx.com/dxspot.php. It taps into the DX Cluster and
maps out the last 25 stations heard. You can click on the map markers to
see more information or look at the list below. Clicking on the callsign
does a callsign lookup. While looking at the page, just hit refresh on
your browser to load an updated map.

[Elecraft] Today I got to play with the KX3: Initial impressions

2012-02-11 Thread Tim Tucker
Today I got to play with Serial No. 6 KX3. While I didn't have as much
time as I wished, I was able to familiarize myself with it's operation,
controls and overall design. My initial impressions are posted at:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto Notch distortion

2012-01-26 Thread Tim Tucker
I've noticed and observed this exact same thing while using MixW or DM780.
The auto notch doesn't kill the desired signal like it should - it appears
that it's missing on either side of the signal. The manual notch works
as it should.

While watching the effect of the autonotch on USB a CW signal in

is a nice ~200 Hz wide band of notched audio.

First, a screenshot with no notch enabled:

 Second, the auto-notch:
