soon to add one for linking a repeater. probably an old dell running

I suspect that may have been asked before, so forgive me if it has, but I
need to know what the typical voltage readings are observed (on the K3
voltage indicator) when
a) On receive?
b) With say 10w TX power?
c) With 100W TX power?

Using a DMM, I can see that my 13.8volt linear PSU seems to drop 0.1volt
when going from receive to the 100W TX level - yet the display indicator on
the K3 goes from 13.7v (receive) to 13.3v (10W) to 12.9v (100W) Is this
typical?

Now that I have had it for a year or so it has become a integral part of
my operating. its wonderfull in chasing DX and contests for finding
signals especially on quiet bands. is a band open? just watch the
water fall for a half a minute and you can see. never mind hunting up
and down the band to see what may be there. find the station being

 - In USB mode, with a flat EQ, I get a flat spectrum apart from the

 - In DATA A mode, on the other hand, I get a peak around 100Hz, nothing

and going slowly down to 1kHz. Then a big dip in signal/noise centered
around 2kHz. In other words, very distorted signal!

I am pretty sure this does not come from the radio, with a simple

it? Could it be an FFT artifact linked to the sampling rate of the
soundcard and an internal sampling rate of the radio in DATA mode?
Something else ??

Kind of scratching my head on this one, maybe smarter/more experience
Hams on the list will have an answer!

Oh yes: WSJT-X is running on a Mac, not that it should really matter.

Re PTT, there are many different ways to control PTT. If you are using
AFSK, you can let N1MM Logger do all the PTT control, either using RTS
on the same COM port you use for radio control, or by using software
commands, or by using a separate COM port, or from a Winkeyer (N1MM
Logger can use the Winkeyer's PTT output in all modes, not just CW).
If you opt for any of these methods, MMTTY's PTT FSK port should be
set to NONE.

Alternatively, you can control PTT (and FSK, if you are using it) from
MMTTY on a separate COM port, in which case MMTTY needs to be
configured to use that port.

How you configure N1MM Logger depends on which method you are using
for PTT control. This is all described at

Re: [Elecraft] K3 13.8 VDC power

2014-12-23 Thread david Moes
Interesting presentation and I certainly understand the principal of
supply voltage vs IMD. There are some transmitters that I would not run
at 12vsome are worse than others. Im looking specifically at K3
performance as this is what I have, and as Don points out it is one of
if not the cleanest out there and as pointed out droping my power by 30%
would have little effect at the receiving end but would certainly reduce
IMD and may get me an hour more operating time to boot. What
transmitter you were using on page 43Seems to be an ICOM 7600 for
most samples and what were the actual high, nominal, and low voltages.
just a guess would be the rigs spec High, 13.8, and spec minimum.

Also I wonder if I could get the authors permission to use this in a
presentation at a club meeting.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 13.8 VDC power

2014-12-22 Thread david Moes
I'm just curios is there any real test data available showing what IMD
may be present at various supply voltages? I have heard many comments
on the reflector over the years saying to keep the voltage high one
member saying to keep it at 15V.The specs say 13.8 V nominal during
TX. (11 V min, 15 V max) I would think that the transmit signal
should be fairly clean within this range.

At home its on a regulated supply 13.8 so NP but at the cottage where
there is no utility power its on a battery with 6 and 10ga wiring all
using solar charge. At night I will see voltages drop to about 12V
after operating with lighting from the same battery for a while usually
about 1:00 am in a contest. this is when I go off the air and to bed,
as this is typically about when the battery reaches a 40-50% charge and
I don't like to go below this. is operating approaching 12 volts
(transmit) really an issue?

What do you do about the voltage being 12.5ish instead of 13.8? Run the
K3s at reduced power (because of the amps you are doing anyway)? Don't
worry about extra IMD? Use a DC-DC converter to get 13.8V?

Most of my contesting is done either at legal limit, with the K3s
driving an amp or at QRP. For NAQP, of course, i run 100W. Even at
100W and 12.5V the K3 is pretty clean, and at the 40-50W level it
takes to drive my Ten Tec Titans, even cleaner. The measurements in
the link below were taken with my usual power setup.

k9yc.com/P3_SpectrumMeasurements.pdf

Someone mentioned using a solar charge controller. I'm using a GV MPPT
charge controller between my solar panels and the battery. It's RF
quiet. Most charge controllers make RF noise. GV makes several models
for different battery types, voltages, and current ratings. They are
available here. The company also seems to be a good place to buy Li
batteries.

assume his question was intended for information gathering for work in
progress this will take time I am hoping I am correct on this
assumption and that the much anticipated development of added and
improved features is now in progress. I love my P3 before I got it
it was on the it would be nice but not essential list but for SP in a

now been upgraded to an essential piece of my station. Any

Most (all ?) tracking receivers like the HP-117's are

Most of the atomic clocks now in use -do not- synch
to the current modulation scheme on the 60 kHz signal.
This will explain the differences in displayed time on
supposedly identical clocks and how some appear to
not be getting sufficient enough signal to synchronize.

I heard from my time-nerd friends that the modulation scheme changes for
a short period at night to allow a chance for older equipment to sync
up. I don't know that for sure.

Technology Review said there are millions of pieces of equipment that
use the older scheme.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and FLDIGI Question

2014-11-24 Thread david Moes

Hi Joe

I think what you say is understood. but there is a reason to adjust
what FLdigi calls TX level. This is to match the output level so it
matches other programs this adjustment is independent so it wont effect
levels from other programs. If the output levels of all program can
matched ie FLdigi WSJT-X, MMsstv, etc. it simplifies things when
moving from one digital program to another by not having to readjust
levels every time to achieve the proper setting of four bars fifth
blinking. I think if you read the rest of the postings you will
understand this need.

The K3 *can not* adjust transmit level (power output) by reducing audio
drive. If you reduce drive below the ALC threshold, power output will
become unstable and drift. Set your sound card output to a fixed
level (typically 60 to 80% of maximum), adjust the K3 Line IN control
for four to five bars of ALC, then adjust desired power output using
the K3 PWR control.

Any other procedure risks unstable power output (low end) or significant
distortion (high end).

Not sure if it was you and I cant even remember what band 40 I think,

punch but in doing so they are louder but harder to understand so I

Re: [Elecraft] K3 cw settings

2014-10-31 Thread david Moes
Its all very personal and yes narrow bandwidth will have a some what
hollow or squezed sound, this is just the nature of using a narrow
bandwidth. I find that the K3 sounds better at very narrow settings
than some of the other rigs I have had. saying that try playing with
the Pitch of your CW signal this will move the passband of the reciever
up and down while keeping the desired signal within the bandpass.you
might just find that sweetspot where the CW tone is good to your ear. I
have mine around 640hz this works for me and by narrowing the
bandwidths sounds good to me and will eliminate not just nearby signals
but seems to reduce the noise as it cuts out the noise that is not on
the desired signals frequency especially with very weak signals. If
you are not used to using narrow filters it may just take some time to
get used to it. once you do however you will find the oposite and that
narrower sounds better than wide even in quiet band conditions. I
don't generally go below bandwidth of 240 - 400 in busy conditions like
a contest and 1kc in not so busy. when I am calling a station in a
big pileup and trying separate him from all the others calling I will go
right down to as low as 100 hz even 50hz the K3 will go that narrow
without too much ringing something I have not been able to do with
other radios.

If one assumes a 67% efficiency (realistic) at 180 watts input, the
output power will be 120 watts - that is about what one can get from a
K3, although I do not recommend running the power knob to more than
100 watts to keep IMD under control.

Sooo - I don't think the TX1 will crank out a whole more power It

Re: [Elecraft] Split N/A

2014-10-03 Thread david Moes
Im not sure I would like this at all. sometimes I think that
fool-proofing a rig is the wrong way to go as it take the ownership away
from the operator to pay attention to what they are doing and panders to
the shall I say the bad drivers. if I am working split I make it habbit
to set offset where I make the most mistakes is when I set the
offset and forget to enable split. or worse make the contact move on to
a station working simplex and forget that I am in split. and its
really not that embarrassing and most figure it out in a call or so.
those that don't aren't paying enough attention. In most cases when
someone makes this error its often the Up cops that are worse QRM than
the original offender. Thats when I get frustrated.

If this must be done however make the offset mode specific it
automatically 1khz in cw and 3 in ssb. but I dont see a great need.

No single value of frequency offset can be optimum for all modes, but
anything is better than leaving it at zero! As a frequent user of Split
for CW and RTTY, but only very rarely on SSB, I have found +3kHz a very
acceptable compromise. Obviously it isn't perfect; but remember it is
only a starting-point for tuning the pileup, so the exact value isn't
hugely important.

The main point is: the default Split offset should *never, never* be
zero... and that is exactly where the K3 gets it wrong. When the user
double-presses AB to escape from the SPLIT N/A situation, it brings
both VFOs onto the same frequency - leaving the user only one step away
from accidentally calling on top of the DX station.

Other transceiver manufacturers recognise the need for better protection
against that hugely embarrassing mistake, which is why Smart Split has
become an industry standard. With one notable exception.

And I do not have any issue with the K3 not going split with RTTY on
one freq and CW/SSB on the other. You have to admit operating RTTY
and SSB/CW split is not exactly a common mode.

However, it would be appropriate when initiating SPLIT from the A-B
button that VFO B mode be forced to that of VFO A if VFO A is digital
and the frequency of VFO B be forced to that of VFO A if VFO B is on
a different band rather than SPLIT N/A.

Unlike Ian, I would not want the VFO B *frequency* changed (e.g., Quick
Split) as long as it was on the current band since I'm just as likely
to have set it manually even if I have not set the mode and the Smart
Split splits will invariably be different mode to mode (up 1 in CW,
UP 2 in RTTY, UP 5 in SSB, etc.) and band to band.

With AFSK-A the K3 has very a narrow DSP filter to maintain a really
good transmit IMD so you need to keep the modulating frequencies
within the chosen preset filter range 1275 in my setup. You can use
the waterfall to tune but you need to use DATA-A instead of AFSK-A
risk is any off frequency noise from the sound card, harmonics etc will
also get transmitted not really a big issue if the sound card is good
quality. I found that with the P3 the markers lined up with the mark
frequency so tuning with the VFO was quite convenient without the P3 I
may have been more tempted to use Data-A and tuning with the mouse

2014-10-01 Thread david Moes
I have dabbled a bit with RTTY mostly with the Centenial and some DX

relying on the P3 for waterfall display. It seems I got bitten by the
RTTY contest bug because I loved it. So here is the question to the
serious RTTY contester. what is the ideal setup. is MMTTY and DATA-A
best or should I interface for fsk. and is MMTTY the best option here?
and more important what is the best way to do this both from software
and hardware setup.

Yes, you can do FSK-D with MMTTY, and that requires a one transistor
interface to drive the K3 ACC connector pin 1. Some prefer that
approach because it avoids setting the soundcard levels correctly for
transmit. The choice is yours to make.

Re: [Elecraft] MMTTY DATA-A or FSK

2014-10-01 Thread david Moes
Thanks everyone for the advice. sounds like I was well on the right
track. I just wasn't sure if I should go with FSK seems I don't need
to.I have seen references to using multiple decode screens and was
on the research list glad you mentioned it Jim. I have a good
dedicated sound card for AFSK and have been using it for a long time
for other digital modes and analog sstv etc. so no worries there.
and yep I did have it AFSK-A not DATA-A as I wrote in the OP sorry
about that confusion.

As far as padding the messages with a line feed and space at the end
yep found many ops that didn't do that and was hard to know which was
the first or last letter of a call vs decoded noise sometimes like this

LKASDFVE3SD 599 04 ON VE3SDYUBDS ASJD AGWSW
very Confusing. I quickly confirmed I had a leading and trailing
space on all macros when I realised what was happening so I wasn't doing
the same thing to others. I didn't add the line feed Ill revisit that
before next contest.

All good advice

2014-08-17 Thread david Moes
I agree with those that would like to see TX monitoring and how about
wider range it'd be handy for quick looks at say 10m for activity to
see 400 or 500 KHZ.

I do some SSTV and enjoy itI think there are more of us than you
think and not just the fools on 14.230 sending soft porn. however if
I want to play SSTV I am running MMSSTV anyway that has good templates
sending and lots of function, ability to store images etc.I am not
sure just to add the ability to monitor incoming pictures would be a
good use of resources. unless you are planning to implement something
with MMSSTV's level of capability. adding more comprehensive
RTTY/psk function or perhaps JT65/9 or even a simple logger so I don't
need to drag the the PC when outside the shack would be nice.just
pie in the sky thing there.

I also created a 5 page printed guide and leaving at the station

the TAP/HOLD differences and the fact that most functions are clearly
marked. I noted that ergonomically the layout of the K3 has similar
functions in the same general area on the panel.

So the result on Field Day this year was that the several operators who
used my K3 felt much more comfortable with it. I did need to answer a
couple of queries on the fly but over all most of the ops enjoyed using my
K3 and P3. One of the most timid of last years ops told me she really felt
that the K3 was pretty easy to use now that she understood the TAP/HOLD
functions. In fact she would consider an Elecraft product next time she
was in the market. Most of the ops really loved the P3 and it's ability to
easily hunt and pounce.

I showed a couple of hams how easy it was to be running on a frequency and
hunt and pounce using the 2nd receiver on the same band. That totally
amazed a couple of people.

As a bonus, our club has 2 Kenwood 930s, one of which is having issues. So
next year, we will probably be using not only my K3, but my KX3 with the
100W amp for a second station. Retiring one of the 930s (thankfully) since
they have no filtering.

As with several FD operations we can run CW and SSB on any band at the same
time. The K3 output is very clean, not causing any RFI issues (as
expected). The 930s do not cause RFI in the K3, even though they have
issues with each other on some bands.

A properly constructed APP connector takes about 10 pounds of force to

Re: [Elecraft] OT: APP strain relief

2013-05-02 Thread david Moes
you are correct that a properly crimped connection is as good as
soldering but that really wasn't the point and I'm not sure why I even
mentioned soldering perhaps because I know that some do. I just crimp
as its way faster less burns and swearing and works fine for me.
The biggest downfall of soldering APP is that the solder and flux can
run down the pin where contact is made defeating the silver plating
creating problems.

However, whether you crimp or not, with light gauge wires like that
the power cable for an HT or small accessory, a strain relief will help
prevent wires from breaking off right at the end of the connector due to
fatigue. Frequent connecting and reconnecting plus moving equipment
while connected will break the wire right where it comes out of the
crimped connector pin. (I'm not talking about the wires pulling out).
A strain relief will reduce the radius of the bend in the wire at the
connection when it is moved aroundI don't see how crimping the
connector alone will prevent a wire bending and eventually breaking off
from fatigue

As for Mercedes Way back I was a Mechanic at a Mercedes dealer and I
know for sure that Mercedes Benz soldered plenty including pins for the
connectors. I'm sure that is changed in the last 3 decades due to
manufacturing cost.

{Directed at no one in particular. Don't take it personally, anyone}

I think someone already mentioned doubling the stripped wire back over
the insulation, then putting that in the APP terminal. I'm pretty sure
that's what Anderson recommends. But then you have to PROPERLY crimp
it, not solder it. Do that and you won't need strain relief in
ordinary service.

So treat yourself. West Mountain has an EXCELLENT crimper good for all
three APP terminals, and as quality crimpers go, it's dirt
cheap...$40...the price of two large pizzas. Anderson has one too, but
you need a credit check to buy it. I've done hundreds of crimps with
the West Mtn crimper for ham, auto and R/C use. Soldering APPs is
ridiculous and produces an inferior connection that NEEDS strain
relief. You select a stranded wire, then wick solder up it to make it
a solid wire. That's nuts.

I've heard from lots of R/C people that crimping makes an inferior
connection and the connection should be soldered as well. Tell that to
Mercedes or any quality auto or motorcycle manufacturer. Except for PC
boards, just try to find a soldered joint in an automobile of any
quality. You won't.
Everything is crimped. I don't know for sure, but I'd bet all aircraft
connectors are crimped. I bet the SR-71 connectors are all crimped.
Probably the Shuttle too. Shouldn't that be good enough for a 12 volt
ham rig?

Crimping isn't inferior. Crimping with crap tools is inferior.

Well, that feels better.

There has been some discussion about
Part 97 of the FCC Rules and whether

The whole article can be read here

are actually permitted in our phone bands. I have never seen a precise
definition of what the FCC means with the terms phone, digital or
image. If digital voice meats the criteria for digital, according to
FCC they should go in the CW portion of the bands! I can't imagine that
would be popular with the CW folks.

Re: [Elecraft] Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?

2013-04-04 Thread david Moes
Casual SSB with a K3: yes no worries there. It does casual SSB very
well.

forever rig with a K3: definitelyunless some radical and amazing
new technology comes out that will turn ssb into a thing of the past the
K3 will be a great radio.

Do you need to be a propeller head like me to use a K3? no way!I
have used the K3 at Field Day for the Gota station. We had some new
hams and a few returning hams that felt quite comfortable with it in
short time. including one that had left the hobby when SSB was Duck
Talk and AM still dominated the phone bands. It is a great stand
alone rig. no computer needed just a power supply mic and antenna.
although a computer is handy sometimes for the other tasks like logging
etc.

Ok so is it too much radio? well probably not. It can be simple to
operate rig if thats all you need but one thing that I like about the K3
is what it can do if you want it to. If you plan on just using for
rag chew and nets. you will be happy. However If at some time you get
interested in some other part of the hobby like digital modes, SSTV,
contesting etc. the K3 will fit in to that as well. What I am
saying is it will have many options that you may never use, but it will
be there as your interests change.

My question, can a casual SSB operator mostly interested in talking with ham
friends find happiness with the K3? Will I be in over my head with the
technology side of the radio?

I know an answer will not involve electrons but I bet there are some pretty
wise hams onboard that can provide some insite to my question.

Thanks so much and 73's

Re: [Elecraft] Free DV (digital voice as reported in QST-April issue)

2013-04-03 Thread david Moes
Yes use the same setting as you would for PSK or any other sound card
based digital mode using DATA-A. Set the computer output level to
just make bar 5 flicker in the ALC. Keep the output power down a bit.
If you run full power and read a novel the PA temp will rise quite high
after a few minutes. I keep it around 60W or so. I don't do that
much Freedv just enough to try for a few QSOs. but use Easypal that
send a similar digital signal out and the same power rule applies.

I have found that the mode works but the signal has to be fairly strong
over the noise to decode well. nice and quite when you are receiving
no hiss etc. definitely not for DX but fine for rag chew or a round
table where all the signals are strong.

Re: [Elecraft] computer - P3 - K3 communications blues

2013-03-16 Thread david Moes

You should be able to run one and only one additional application to
the P3. Once you have one application connected to the P3 serial port,
that application blocks any other applications from using the serial
port the K3 the P3 are using. So if you are trying to use the same
serial port for more than one software application it will not use the
P3 port. It will give you a port in use error message.

Isn't LP-Bridge going to allow more than one application to talk to the
serial port? I thought that is one of its main purposes.

alternatively and much simpler than LP-Bridge to solve this you can use
vspe from eterlogic. This can create a splitter to allow any number off
applications to access a virtual port that is all routed into one
physical Comm port. works for me. I often have logger32, MMSSTV
FLDIGI all working at once.I can even have K3 utilities and K3eze
all connected at the same time using VSPE.

All that said it seems that the OP cant even connect one program.
Id also check that that all the cabling is correct. IE PC to P3 and P3
to K3 aren't reversed. try removing the P3 from the picture just to
double check that the serial port to K3 is working. also shut down
LPbridge and try using the port directly with only K3 utilities using
that port. I am not totally familiar with LP bridge so I am not sure
if there is extra configuration if using the P3.

Re: [Elecraft] Echo when transmitting

2013-03-16 Thread david Moes

I had a similar problem some time ago.had me baffled for a while

If your computer is connected to line in and out try disconnecting
them. If the problem disappears then check that the sound card used
for the K3 audio by opening recording devices, then select the device
you are using for the K3 and click properties. Under the Listen tab be
sure that the box for listen to this device is not selected.

If it is it can create feed back that has some delays from both the K3
(if monitor Normal) and latency withing the sound card itself to create
this kind of echo. drove me nuts trying to figure it out.

also I find I need to keep the monitor level down when using the
headset, Yamaha CM500 here, otherwise there is some audio feedback

Re: [Elecraft] P3 burn-in concerns?

2013-03-11 Thread david Moes
That would depend if the backlight is LED or cold cathode. I service
equipment with LCD displays with both types of backlights and burnout is
very very rare. on small screens like the P3 the light is not being
pushed hard and should last a long long time.

As for burn in. One of our machines with a 14 inch LCD display does in
fact burn in.It takes a many months of displaying the same image
24/7. The customer never sees the burn as that part of the screen never
changes. but with the different screens I use in diagnostics I can see
it. If I leave it on a full white screen over night it disapears and
doesnt seem to come back for another several months so the burn in seems
to not be permanent. on the P3 I doubt this will ever be an issue.

Should I be concerned about the backlight? I've only had two burn out, one

2013-03-06 Thread david Moes
I currently have the 1.8 filter. and it works fine for me. however
don't expect miracles I am not sure it its really all that needed.
If you are in a location that you get a lot of very strong signals in a
contest the filter will help more when adjacent strong signals start
AGC acting on it and effect the level of weak signal you are trying to
dig out. however in most cases The excellent dsp filter will do the
work most of the time anyway and the added filter will not do much
unless the guy a few KHZ away is really strong.

On the other handin CW and digital using narow filters will
have a much greater noticeable impact as the signals are much closer
together.

Thumb drives are definitely not created equal. other than download
speeds there are other timing issues. the combination of the OS on a
desktop or laptop computer and the firmware on the motherboard seems to
deal with poor quality thumb drives. but just about any dedicated
hardware that just has basic USB support will not like substandard thumb
drives. At work we use thumb drives to load and upgrade firmware on
much of our equipment and find that many types fail.Oddly its not
always the more expensive brand names that work. we have a bunch of
no-name drives from an unknown source that just fine. The Kingston
Data Traveler is the one that is recommended by engineering and work well.

I gave Lp Bridge a try Got it to work fine but its not really what I
am looking for.

I want a totaly hands off option as was the VSPE application. It
started at boot up and sat quietly in the systray.did not need K3 on
to launch didn't have to think about order of launching and starting
other things or connecting and disconnecting.all programs could be
set to the same port at any speed so no individual port configurations
I am not sure what the limits are but I could have more than 5 different
programs using the K3 it seems that LP-Bridge only allowed five
virtual ports and each had to be dedicated to a program. even though I
don't use all five at the same timethere are many programs that I
have that access the K3 at one time or another

Don't get me wrong Lp bridge looks like a great piece of software just
not what I am looking for.

after much research there seems to be two alternativesone is to pay
for VSPE and I understand the reason for them to have to charge.
the second option is to put the computer into driver test mode. not
sure what security issues this opens but I know that this is not advised.

anyone else have any ideas?

Ill give LP-Bridge a try

I thinks its more than what I wanted but if it will do the job that's
fine. What I had before was a background program that allowed any
application attach to Com5 at the same time at any speed. while the
K3 was physically hooked up to Com1 fixed at . I had issues however
with a few progs like FLdigi Gateway and Logger32 if some other program
using the port was still open. If I am reading correctly LP-Bridge may
solve this.

one question I have been using RTS for keying to transmit when using a
PC based DVK and sending CW with the DTS will this still work or
will LP_bridge have timing issues

Oh yea while shopping for a computer discovered that most MOBOs still
have real com and parallel ports. they just need a cable with
connector on one end to go to mother board and DB9 at the other to make
it accessible. only a very few that were mainly targeting the gamers
with mega fast busses and designed around overclocking etc that
didn't. no mucking around with USB to Serial

Have a look at Lowepro backpacks. They have a huge selection of padded

even has a slot for a laptop. its one of the larger padded backpacks
with padded dividers. I can rearrange the padded dividers and fit key,
headset, laptop and K3 in it. a smaller backpack would be excellent
for a KX3 with room for batteries, key, wire antennas, mic and a key.
with room for lunch and a few other essentials. some even have holders
intended for tripods or in this case perhaps a Budipole.

I started out using Pelican cases but I've really found them too big and
heavy - overkill - for the packing I do. The gear does go in a waterproof

Re: [Elecraft] K3: vs a Collins S-line RX

2013-02-03 Thread david Moes
I have a rig that has many similarities to the Collins KWM-2. The
KW2000b made by KW Electronics in Great Britain is often compared to the
Collins as it shares many similarities in design. It too has a
mechanical filter and very similar audio amp. Is the best sounding
SSB rig I have (wish I had a Collins). with wonderful receive audio.
Is it the mechanical filter or the class A audio amp? I cant say for
sure but there are many audiophiles out there, as well as those that
play guitar and rely on the smooth and pleasant sound of the mighty
vacuum tube. or in the case of the KW2000b the mighty valve. As
far as other receive qualities if I could add DSP and narrow filters
it would surely come close to the K3 in busy band conditions.at
present it is a great rag chew and net rig but lacks in the tight
conditions of contesting. I will mirror Eriks comments that the K3
receive audio is just fine and as good as any of my other solid state
rigs. Surely it has no worries from truly qualified comments from
Elecraft detractors.

On 2/3/2013 15:42, Erik Basilier wrote

Since nobody has answered yet, I will give it a shot, although it is
entirely subjective and not even based on recent observations. I am
commenting only about receive audio, and only ssb. I have a KWM-2, and had
the same question on my mind years ago. Here is what I recall. When I got
the KWM-2 I had an FT-1000D, and I noticed that ssb sounded much better in
the Collins, at the same 2.1 KHz filter width. I attributed this to two
separate effects: Class A audio power amp in the Collins vs push-pull
semiconductor pa in the Yaesu, and mechanical filter in the Collins vs. xtal
filters in the Yaesu. I think the mechanical filters may have less phase
distortion and less group delay variations than the xtal units; at least
that was my guess at the time. Then I sold the Yaesu and bought an early K3
#18xx. The K3 was much superior to both the other radios in almost every
respect, but the ssb receive audio was the rare exception. It was inferior
to the Collins. I felt it was also worse than the Yaesu, although both rigs
used xtal filters (not the whole K3 story; spare me the flames) and solid
state push pull audio pa's. Later I got Elecraft's hardware upgrades for the
rx audio, and they made a big difference. I now feel the K3 is at least as
good as the Yaesu. Still I don't feel it is as good as the Collins. Later
still I got a KX3. It sounds incredibly good in a certain sense that I
attribute to the selectivity being affected by on no xtal or mechanical
filters. OTOH I feel that its audio pa suffers from not being class A. So
the KX3 and the Collins have opposite strengths and weaknesses. Overall, the
KX3 wins over the Collins. So, with these radios to choose from, which one
do I turn on when I have time to get on the air? The K3 wins overall, and
not just because more tx power is available. It is just a little bit more
comfortable to operate. BTW I haven't experimented with running the K3 with
a roofing filter much wider than the DSP bandwidth; perhaps that would
improve the receive audio noticeably? Warning: The above are my subjective
observations and not supported by any measurements. I post this with much
hesitation. Probably some Elecraft detractor is going use it as
justification for writing something on another board to the effect that
Elecraft audio is bad. Shame on that person whoever it may be.

It would also fit nicely over the top of the K3 as the KAT500 fits over the

just to add my two pennies, I am what I would call a casual CW
contester. I got the 250Hz 8 polenow I often think that was not the
best decidion and should have used the 400Hz filter in rare cases the
250hz pay off in tight situation. Most often the 400hz would have
probably done better as I don't see that many big signals here and the
chances that there is one withing 400HZ is not that often. when I am
wider than 250 I do find that there is sometimes a biggies too close for
the 1.8 filter and agc starts to get in the way. so the 400 would have
been best for me.

the market as well. My plan is to run with the internal antenna tuner and
100w only until I can save enough pennies and get the KAT500 and KPA500 and
have the entire elecraft line! Plus it will all conserve some space on my
shack desk! :)

Re: [Elecraft] XMIT EQUALIZTION

2013-01-03 Thread david Moes

Two thoughts.

First for PSK you should be using Data-A This bypasses RX and TX EQ,
any compression settings and also disables the mic.

On the EQ thing. You can set eq settings with a program called K3EZ
I use it with different settings for rag-chew and net and another for
contesting and DX. each for three different microphones. The
original creator is not supporting it anymore but there are copies
around. I believe one of the members of the group hosted the install
files on his server but I no longer have the link for them. If you
have the program you can store eq settings and recall them on demand.
I could email it but its bigger than most emails can handle.

this program does a whole host of cool stuff EQ is just one small part.

If anyone knows where to find K3EZ perhaps you could post it here.

level and then I noticed that on the low end of the PSK spectrum I had hardly
any power at all but in the mid to high end things were fine. Then it hit me,
it was following the equalization pattern I had set up for the mic. I see that
there is a second equalization pattern for FM, ESSB and AM unfortunately which
will not help me in this case as I assume it only come in when you have those
modes selected. Wonder if there is any chance of getting a second pattern in
the SSB mode? I am sure some guys would like to have a rag chew mode and a DX
mode. I need one for PSK and one for DX. It is troublesome to have to dial
out all of the equalization everytime I want to do PSK. Any suggestions as I
might be missing something. 73 Mike K4PI

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Firmware and K3

2012-12-26 Thread david Moes
You only hear of the failures here, thats what the forum is about. If
you think of the thousands of K3 and the many upgrades that have been
done on each the failures posted here are a small fraction of a
percentage compared to the successfull upgrades. Those that have
problems get it going based on advice here or from the great support
from Elecraft.

I too use a real serial port and have never had issues. I only
have the K3 conected when upgrading and turn off any virtual serial port
emulatiors before an upgrade/downgrade. that said if you are using a
USB to serial and it is working fine with the K3 for normal use I am
sure it will be fine.

As a caution I don't do it the day of a contest or when I plan to play
marathon DX. If you Brick the K3 you can reset it and try again
then restore the configuration that you backed up before the upgrade.
I have never had to do that. If you have a failure post here and the
answer to your woes will be most often answered in quick time.

in other words don't worry about doing upgrades. They will work fine
as long as you take the appropriate precautions

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and HRD

2012-12-23 Thread david Moes
Similar function with logger32 works fine on the K3.The mode will
change according to mode definitions in the bands and modes table and
sets mode when I click on a spot. HRD uses a similar setup. Is there
possibly an error in the HRD band layout definitions as set in the
band manager? possibly entries for the 30s segments. Mode is set
based on band layouts and HRD the software sets rig mode, so i doubt
it has much to do with the K3 firmware.

If I am way off here, I must apologies. my answer assumes that this
is similar in V6 as in earlier versions.

I have a really odd bug going on and I don't know if it is the K3 or Ham
Radio Deluxe. Whenever I click on a spot, everything works fine
except when
it happens to be any frequency in the 30s - that is 3.530 to 3.539,
7.030 to
7.039, etc. Any other frequency in the CW band shows up on the K3
and the
mode is correctly changed to CW, except in the 30s, where it always
shifts
to SSB, even though it is in the CW band. Anyone know if that's an
issue in

the K3 or in HRD? I suspect it is in HRD. Thanks.

2012-12-10 Thread David Moes
This is true in many cases. however in many small devices like phones
and such put decent modern drivers in that will sound pretty good
without all the electronic wizardry that the device uses to make it even
better my speaker mic was proof of that. Its amazing how the fine
points of speaker driver have changed in the miniature world of today
yet the basic principle is still the same as the good old Rice Kellogg
design of 1924.

Where the speaker, its driving electronics and the enclosure are all
in one package, there's great scope to compensate for all the
short-comings of the arrangement with sophisticated (software) filters
which you will not get when you salvage just the speaker which is not
in itself optimised for clarity - it's the whole ensemble.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 rig control/CW serial interface

2012-12-02 Thread david Moes
I use serial cable only as well using RTS DTR for keying from N1mm and
logger 32. originally I had some issues with some messed up keying
using the USB- serial adapter. I discovered that the Mother board did
have RS232 it just wasn't on the back of the computer. I just needed
an adapter cable that had DB9 at one end and a molex connecter that
attache to Motherboard. this solved the issue I am guessing it was
some latencies in the USB adapter.

Talking to the guy at the computer store he told me that most new
motherboards still have a serial bus but rather than a DB9 port on the
back just have 9 pin connectors on the board so you need the extra
cable. it just fits into one of the unused expansion slot openings and
has a ribbon cable from the DB9 that goes to the connector on the
MoBo. works fine for meI don't run it more than 30WPM but that's
just because faster is way beyond my own abilities.

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 neophyte needs help please!

2012-11-23 Thread david Moes

What do I do to enable fldigi to read the frequency from the K3?
In FLDigi select Configure and choose rig control. Then select the
Hamlib tabIn that window check the use Hamlib button, then in the
rig menu box select the Elecraft K3 (beta). The Device should be the
com port that the K3 is connected to. Set the baud rate to the same as
it is set on the K3. sideband: to rigmode The rest of the default
values should work. including PTT via Hamlib command should be checked
then under Harware PTT tab make sure that all boxes are
unchecked. At this point click initalize it should connect and
you should see the frequency read out. be sure to click save and close.

If it fails FLDigi may hang and show 'not responding' for half a minute
or so. if this happens check that the port and baud settings are
correct and that there are no other applications using the same Com Port.

you will find FLDigi will now be able to put the K3 into transmit for
you as well without the PTT connection, this is done through a command
being sent via the serial port rather than PTT or using the RTS/DTS.

if its working close the program and reopen it.this will
permanently save the changes.

rig control is somwhat limited in FLdigi you can change mode and QSY
if you want more control you can use FLRig. the windows version is a
little limited vs the Linux version but it still works quite well for
basic rig control.

Here is my limited input on digital and Digipan. and in my
experience the K3 caters very well to this type of digital operation
using AFSK. The best when compared to any other rig I have tried or
owned.

Hi from Julie KT4JR, writing from the address of my husband K4MWE because this

We first tried DM780 but it was complex for starters, so now I am trying
digipan, figuring we can go more complex later once I catch on to this... Don
Wilhelm kindly answered some earlier questions but now I have more.
First I would agree that HRD can be a little complex if you are not
experienced with PSK and if PSK is all that you are interested in
Digipan is a good start. it has a few limitations vs some of the
otherspersonally I prefer FLDIGI but its all a matter of personal
taste.

We have a SignaLink installed between K3 and computer (windows 7) with line in
and line out connected but the PTT not connected since we have a footpedal
inserted there.
The elecraft cable connects the K3 to computer’s COM4. If using HRD this works
fine. I am thinking that if we do NOT open HRD then Digipan can use this same
cable for PTT
I have followed the instructions for setting the K3 PTT to RTS-OFF and the same
in Digipan.
In test mode of the K3 if I click the RX/TX button in Digipan I have the
correct 4 bars ALC with 5th blinking, so I guess the transmit is working?

unless you are using some kind of Port slitter you can only have one
program accessing a serial port. so you are correct that HRD or any
other program accessing the K3 needs to be closed. To have the 4 bars /
5th blinking you are fine on transmit. to be sure that its transmitting
the right thing turn up the monitor and you should hear the warble.

I am confused about archive posts discussing VOX for PTT. Can I ignore that?
Is that a different option or is that necessary?
it seems that you have the PTT working fine with the RTD/DTS so yes you
can ignore the VOX discussion.

We do not seem to be decoding any signals but I don’t know how to tell if that
is because I have done something wrong or there are no signals strong enough to
receive. I have tried several bands.

what do you see in the waterfall at the bottom of the screen. you
should see blue with some yellow snow with several vertical bars (under
busy band conditions) that stream from top to bottom. the vertical
bars start as other stations transmit.if you move the red diamond
with the flag above to one of these vertical bars with your mouse you
are tuned to the frequency of that one station and should see some
decoding. weak faded bars are weak signals and stronger ones will
of course be strong sigs turning red for really strong signals. You
should be able to decode even the weak faded lines to some level of
readability.

if you see nothing just a black waterfall there are a few things to
look at.

first check that the line out level on the K3 is turned up this is set
by pressing Config button for half a second then rotate VFO B to LIN
OUT. it should read nor XXX XXX being a level in my case the its
004 quite low but I am not using a Signalink instead I am using the mic
input to the computer. The second to check is digipans settings for
sound Card ensure that it is using in your case the Signal Link.
also check that the levels are set correctly. this is best described in
the Signalink manual so no point repeating it here.

The K3 is set to Data A, but Digipan does not know about data mode... It has
band-by-band settings for frequency, then 3 choices of tone, USB, or LSB. I
have tried each with no difference that I can perceive. Which am I supposed to
choose? Maybe something more basic is wrong?

This is just how the frequency is displayed in the scale above the
waterfall. I would recommend either USB (this is what Data-A does)
or Tone. When USB is selected it will show the actual frequency of
the signal you are receiving assuming that you are tuned to the
frequency listed in (Configure -- Band..) from the menu bar. this is
important as Digipan does not read actual frequency from the K3. but
the default listed frequencies here are the common frequencies used for
PSK. If tone is selected it will show you the offset of the signal
from the displayed frequency on the K3.

THANKS to anyone with enough patience to assist!!!

If it is foolish to use Digipan because fldigi is lots better, then tell me
that too!

Digipan is a great launchpad to get started with digital. you can get
the basics here and as you want more you can always migrate to others
later such as FLdigi or DM780 MMVARIThe list goes on and on.

That is interesting.I suspect that they are reacting to the
elecromagnetic field created by rapid current fluctuations in the DC
lines rather than picking up RF.RF would be far to high a frequency
to cause a ferrite to audibly buzz or rattle.

I too run batteries on my K3 when I am at the cabin. and cant say that I
am aware of ever suspected RF issues in the DC power system other than
with the charger which is horrible for noise on the reciever and any
attempts to tame it have failed so I just disconnect it when I'm on the
air.
As far as RF in the power system if it really is a problem I would
put a small cap across the input terminals to the rig. for RF id say
.01mf ceramic disk.if you are attempting to filter ripple from a
generator or charger which is not an RF issue I would first connect
the charger as close if not directly to the battery terminals. then
add a large say 5 mf 16 to 20V capacitor near the power terminals
at the rig. this will filter ripple but wont filter RF well so add to
it a small .01mf ceramic capacitor for any RF.
 I am not
observing any RF problems or reported problems on the air.
If you are not having any issues than I wouldn't worry about it. RF
issues in the power source like batteries are not often a problem so

does it read 35 degrees C when the amp is cold? and is it that hot in
your shack?if this is the reading from a cold start I am guessing
the temp sensor is not calibrated correctly and it is reading quite
high possibly falsely indicating a high temp when its not really that

Yes there is a difference. But according to Amphenol spec sheet, Two
distinct types of 75 Ω BNC's are available, and both mate with each
other and with 50 Ω BNC's. the difference is in the dielectric
This I doubt will be an issue at IF frequency.

This is also backed up in the highly reliable Wikipedia article on BNC ;-)

Go ahead and try it, but if the connections seem flakey you should get a
 real 50-ohm cable.

Re: [Elecraft] SSTV Reception on the K3

2012-09-09 Thread david Moes
H Mark

I play a fair bit if SSTV both using analogue and digital. for
analogue (Martin, Scottie etc. DM780 does just fine. I cant really
advise on how to implement switching mode for DM780 but Data A would be
the best choice. personally I am using MMSSTV and manually change rig
modes. on air I find that DM780 and MMSSTV seem to be both very
popular. If you are interested in using Digital SSTV (Digital Radio
Mondale or DRM) it gets a little more complicated. I dont think that
DM780 will do DRM as I think this is amost exclusively done using a
program called EasyPal. where it gets complicated is the typical QSO
involves sending pictures and often a comment or conversation on
frequency with SSB usually talking about the image sent. for this I
have a short macro that sends at the begining and end of a image send.
one macro at the start changes mode to Data A and reduces power to about
70W. At the end it changes back to SSB and sets power to 100W. this
way the image is sent without compression or EQ. but then after sending
a picture I can just pick up the mic and answer to any comments that may
arise. for receive I don't have much EQ anyway so SSB is just fine for
that.

 varied by CONFIG:L-MIX-R.

If you have CONFIG:SPKR+PH set to YES it does affect what you hear in the

Re: [Elecraft] setting bias on rp mic

2012-09-02 Thread David Moes
Hi

Ok setting the Bias for the mic is easy

Tap the menu button and rotate the VFO b until it displays mic select.
rotate VFO A to select the mic you are setting either FP or RP
pressing the 1 (also labeled A/B), the number is in red, button will
toggle between High and Low (H)igh boosts the mic level and L(ow) is
no boostby tapping the 2 (also labeled REV) turns the 5V bias on or
off. indicated with BIAS on the display

For EQ just tap the number buttons 1 - 8 to switch between each of
the eight different EQ frequencies and rotate the VFOA to adjust EQ
level + or -

The K3 can be a very confusing radio for the new owner and not so new
owner as well including me.. I would strongly recommend purchasing
Fred Cady's book The Elecraft K3 design, Configuration, and Operation.
Fred who Frequently posts on the group, has written this book as an
excellent expansion on the manual. It has many hints and explanations
of the features and functions of the K3 that are easy to understand.
It has bailed me out many times when I just don't understand whats going

So I managed to figure it out

the problem is that EasyPal does not document this very well first off
you need to enter the Cat Commands in HEX rather then plain text.

the MD command defines upper or lower sidband . so I need two different
sets of commands for 40m and down and 20 and up I wish there was a

Hi Jim. Thanks don't get me wrong.I think I was probably

the decoder is a lifeline!

Several years ago I had my first introduction to a CW operator that
made it look so easy and worked effortlessly.while at Field Day he
was sending, and recieving at breakneck speed. I was in a position that
I needed his input on a problem I was having with the logging program.
I stood and waited till he finished a QSO started tuning to the next
station before I asked a question. Giving me full attention he gave me
the answer I needed and we continued talking a little about another
situation. while doing so he continued at his key making several more
QSOs without stopping. I was so amazed at the skill that Ken had that I
have set my goals to be that good.

I had to copy 20WPM to graduate from Radioman School (USN) and go on to CT

Since O Branch guys had to pass the 20WPM code test to advance in grade, I

key. I made the mistake of starting slow and I think that is part of
my problem now. so for the last little while, at same advice of a
local CW champion, I have been listening to other QSOs plus and using
the learning program just learn Morse Code sending at least 20WPM
or faster either random words and abreviations or some text files. I
did have a text file of some 500 plus QSOs that were great to use for
 learning but cant find it.

As for the CW decoder its nice to have in contests for a beginner but
I think it could also become a bad habit.

 on a hand key.

The flurry of complaints, when 4.51 partially unglued the CW text
 decode on
 the K3, further confirms it.

As someone who could copy 20 WPM at age 14, and can still copy 50-60
 wpm in
my head, it is hard to imagine listening to code and not simply
understanding it, like someone talking to me. I've asked some folks
 why
the difficulty learning code, and they relate something that usually
 sounds
like the 13 WPM barrier tale.

As it turns out, the old way to learn code is all wrong as a universal
method. Code needs to be learned like a language, and at 20 wpm to
 start
with. But that's not how it's done the old way. The old way has
 been
around since WWII and the Army Signal Corps. Memorize the alphabet
 with
visual dots and dashes beside it. Then just keep at it until you
 don't
need the card any more. Do it with a typewriter from the get go.
Eventually a sound in the ear is directly linked to a typewriter key,
copied autonomically, and you can carry on an unrelated conversation
 at the
 same time. Buggers don't know

Re: [Elecraft] Echo in monitor audio

2012-07-22 Thread david Moes
Not sure what you are using but I can tell you that this is normal on
the K3since you are monitoring the output from the DSP that applies
EQ compression etc you are hearing the monitor with a slight delay that
is a perceived echo the advantage here is that you are hearing what
is going on the air after all the filtering is applied.
For voice monitoring without any processing or delays, set CONFIG:TX MON
to FAST.
