Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KEY OUT problem

2019-12-29 Thread M. George
Bob N7WY motivated me to provide a few more details on the KEY OUT
mosfet/Q3/IRFI630 replacement. I took the bottom off my K3 to show the
location of the IRFI630 on the bottom of the PCB. It was a little more
tricky than I remembered, so you will need to access the main PCB from the
top of the K3 by removing the KIO3 board and the IO board that has the IF
output. I did the replacement without removing the back panel which would
have been very painful. Again, I do remember being able to do this without
a major disassembly. I de-soldered from the bottom of the PCB and pulled
and replaced the IRFI630 from the top. It was tight, but it sure beat
sending the K3 back to Elecraft and you can do a clean job if you are
careful.

Here are some new pictures that I just took

and annotated with more details of the location of Q3 along with a snippet
from the Elecraft Schematic where Q3 is located. Your mileage may vary
based on your re-work skills but I wouldn't consider this a difficult
replacement... medium effort at worst. When in doubt, send your radio in,
but it's not rocket science:

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - KEY OUT problem

2019-12-28 Thread donovanf
Pete,

I've never had any reason to look at the KEY OUT circuit before, but
it uses a very robust IRF1630 power MOSFET, rated at 200 volts
and 10 amps. Very robust indeed, its no wonder I've never had a
failure. Its not a surface mount device, its a TO220 package.

Hi Pete,

Perhaps more important: how did this unusual failure occur?
Unless you can figure this out with a reasonable degree of certainty,
you're radio is likely to make multiple trips for repair.

One possibility is that you connected a relay to the KEY OUT
connector, but the relay didn't have a snubber diode across its coil.
That could cause enough of a spike to damage your radio.

Another possibility is that you plugged the incorrect cable into the
K3 and excess voltage on that cable damaged your radio.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key Out Jack Not Working

2019-12-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

Pete,

Check the Keyout jack with your ohmmeter. One lead to the center
conductor and the other to the shell.
During receive, it should read infinite resistance, and when you go to
transmit, the resistance should go to near zero.

Do you have anything else connected to the KEYOUT jack (an amplifier
perhaps)? If so, you will have to use isolating diodes for the amp and
your relay for the antenna.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KEY OUT, hi or low on TX?

2019-01-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jamie,

It will short the active wire to ground.

The KeyOut does not source any voltage, it is like a switch, it is
either open or closed. Any voltage is sourced by the amplifier or other
external device. It will only work with a positive voltage.

The voltage and current listed in the specifications are the greatest
that the FET can handle.

Hi Jamie,

Neither...

KEY OUT is connected to an IRF630 power MOSFET which has
"on/off" states, not "HI/LO" states.

During receive its in the off state, sinking less than 50 microamps
from the load connected to KEY OUT.

During transmit its capable of sinking ("grounding") up to 200 volts
at up to 5 amps continuous from the load connected to KEY OUT.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 key out jack

2018-03-08 Thread Don Wilhelm

Shel,

Keyout is on RF Board sheet 1.
Is your problem only from the internal keyer? In other words, does it
work when you use a hand key or computer keying?

If also a problem from a hand key or computer keying, then what is the
DC voltage at the gate of Q3 during keydown - should be almost 12 volts.

Do you have 7 volts on the gate of Q5 during receive?

The Keyout is a simple circuit consisting only of Q3 and Q5 - when in
transmit, the 7R input should go to near zero, and that should make the
gate of Q3 go to a high voltage (almost 12 volts) - that is all there is
to it.

Re: [Elecraft] (k3) Key out redux

2017-10-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

Pete,

Connect one side of the relay coil to your +12 volt supply, and connect
the other side to the KEYOUT jack. Put a diode with the cathode
connected to the +12 volt side across the relay coil. The negative of
your power supply has to connect to the shell of the KEYOUT connector.
The relay will be activated when the K3 KEYOUT is active - keying, TUNE
and PTT will all activate it.

Yes, you should be able to use the same +12 volt supply to power the
SDR's preamp and active antenna, but that is a different consideration
than activating the relay.

2017-10-14 Thread N4ZR
Thanks, everyone who responded to my earlier query - I now understand

Ideally, the 12V relay would only be on when the K3's PTT was on.  The
thing that's driving me nuts is that I had this working, once before,
and then tore it apart for not very good reasons. Now I can't replicate
what I had.

Would anyone be willing to go offline and help me figure this out?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key Out Problem

2016-09-06 Thread Don Wilhelm

Gerry,

What are you using to measure the KEYOUT line? In CW, it will follow
the QSK keying. so it will be a series of fast pulses. If you are
trying to measure with an ohmmeter (or voltmeter), it may not respond
fast enough to see it on the meter.
The fact that it works when you key the microphone indicates that it is
working.

Whether your RX antenna is fast enough to follow the K3 keying is quite
another matter - if it uses a relay, it may not be fast enough.

There are K3 menu parameters that will change the Delay time, see the TX
DLY menu listing for details.

[Elecraft] K3 Key Out Issue

2013-01-05 Thread Paul Ormandy ZL4PW

Hi all,

Am hoping someone can help me with a problem. I have a K3 with a KD9SV rx antenna switch and use the
Key Out line to toggle this device.

For some reason, the K3 will not send the key Out low in CW mode via:

- external software (Logger32, N1MM)
- the macro buttons
- a paddle plugged in the rear port

It won't send it low using any software-oriented mode, e.g. voice keyer or
MMVARI either.

However, it does send it low when PTT is activated, i.e. by a footswitch, and will do so when the K3
is in CW mode as well as SSB so in the meantime I can toggle the rx ant switch with the footswitch.
So it seems the cabling and MOSFET controlling the Key Out lien are functioning correctly.

Have just downloaded the latest firmware, the latest firmware installer and the problem persists. I
have tried EEINIT prior to reloading the complete firmware, tried loading older configurations etc...

My set-up is K3/KPA500/KAT500 connected via the serial cables for control and keying. I ahve tried
disconnecting all external equipment save the rx ant switch and used the M1-M4 macros to generate
code with VOX on and it still won't operate the Key Out line.

Makes no difference if in VOX or QSK off/on or set PTT to OFF-OFF and use the
paddle or M1-M4 macros.

I have

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key Out Inoperative in CW & Tune Modes

2010-12-03 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Dennis,

Save the configuration and do the EEINIT, then restore the configuration.

At most you might have to enter one menu parameter manually - but only
if it is wrong in your K3 right now. If all your menu items are correct
now, they will restore correctly.

Having to manually change one parameter is far different from having to
manually restore them all. Your source seems to have blown things out
of proportion.

[Elecraft] K3 Key Out Inoperative in CW & Tune Modes

2010-12-03 Thread Dennis Ward
All:

All of a sudden, my K3 has stopped activating the Key Out while in CW
or XMIT / Tune mode.

The Key Out does work when closing the PTT input on the Mic Jack.

I received the suggestion to re-init the radio last night. I'm not
ready to do that, as I was cautioned that saving a recent
conifguration may carry the problem with it and could very well cause
me to reload parameters manually.

I don't have much spare time for this with two toddlers in the house.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and if so what was the resolution?

Thank you,

Sometimes Tip/Ring/Sleeve plugs give a false detent and the plug was
not all the way in. Also if a conductor in a cord has broken inside
its insulation, you can get this behavior, including everything
working OK afterwards. Another issue is the tip of an RCA plus not
being quite long enough, or the molding around it keeping it from
being fully inserted. Also RCA chassis jacks are famous for losing
their connection to chassis if a biting lockwasher was not used.

You may wish to construct a replacement cord set and throw away the
wire you are using now.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 key-out jack - configuration needed?

2010-10-10 Thread Olli
Hi James,

you don't need to connect an outside pull-up (only if you want to measure
voltages, so you are basically right as well, depending on what/how you want to
measure ;-)). The transistor is used as a simple electronic switch here thus
when getting bias on it's gate it will switch source (connected to ground)
through to the gate (also groundlevel then, that's why you can simply measure
for 0 ohm resistance between drain and chassis when keyed). If no bias then
infinite ohms at drain.

Anyway, thanks for your assistance and advices! This is what I love about
Elecraft and their email reflector. ;-))

Oliver, it is a MOSFET, IRF630 and you may be right, but I would not
expect to see any change until I provided a voltage source to the Key
Out line. So, if it was me I would do the "pull up" resistor test I
described earlier just to be on the safe side. It appears from the
schematic that it is switched by the 7R line. K3 schematics, RF Board
sheet 1 of 4. There is no drain voltage applied to the IRF630 so that
will have to be supplied externally.

2010-10-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Olli,

The Key Out and the ACC connector Keyout-LP are developed from the same
internal signal, but the driving transistors are different for each.
The Key Out jack is driven by Q5 and Q3 on the RF Board, and you will
find your problem associated with one of those transistors. See the
schematic for the RF board at the top left of sheet 1. Check R4 as well
- the gate of Q3 should go to a high level during transmit (use TX test).

[Elecraft] K3 key-out jack - configuration needed?

2010-10-10 Thread Olli
Hi guys,

preparing for the autumn contest season I thought to do some cable work today.
Made up a cable to key the amplifier and wanted to use the key-out jack
therefor
(only need to sink 13,8 V / 60 mA so should work perfectly well). But the amp
isn't keying. So I measured the RCA jack and unkeyed I can measure infinite
resistance as it should be the case but if I ptt the radio no change on the RCA
jack?! Should be around zero then so no keying there.

Checked the manual but couldn't find anything related to configuration of that
jack, seems it should be always working, right? Any ideas why it is not?

Checked the LP key-out on the ACC connector and that is working properly (but
not enough for the amp, ofcourse, only measured there for verification the
radio
is really keying out, hi).

Can anybody help?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key Out line

2009-12-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

There is no direct relationship between the KEYOUT line and the T/R
switch in the K3. The T/R switch is fully electronic, no relays to
clack and clatter.

The KEYOUT line goes to ground before the onset of RF - and the delay
can be adjusted in the menu. It is normally used for keying an
amplifier. There is also a Keyout-LP line on the ACC connector that
operates at the same time, but the current capability is only 10 ma.
Yes, KEYOUT can handle up to 200 volts open circuit voltage and 5 amps
of closed (keydown) current.

[Elecraft] K3 Key Out line

2009-12-23 Thread Phil Hystad
I noticed from the documentation that the K3 Key out line can handle up to 200
VDC and 5 amps. I assume this means that when the key out is closed that it
can handle 5 amps of current.

So, I am curious, what kind of switch mechanism is used for TR switching. Is
this an actual relay or is it some kind of transistor switch. I am guessing
transistor based switch but this is where I started wondering about the 200 VDC
and 5 amp capability thing.

Or, am I totally off base. I am willing to be off base without shame because I
really do not know a lot of details of how these things are actually done.

Oh, two more minor decisions on configuration to make and then I order my K3,
probably just after Christmas sometime.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Key Out Question

2009-12-20 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jack,

Unless you have a problem with the K3, the KEYOUT jack should have no
voltage on it either during TX or RX.
Check the KEYOUT with an ohmmeter. It should have a high resistance
during receive - then put the K3 into TEST (hold the MODE up button),
then press TUNE - the resistance should drop to almost zero.

With no cable connected to KEYOUT, you should not see any significant
voltage at the K3 - if you do, double check your DMM connections. Any
voltage during key-up (or RX) will be coming from whatever you connect
to KEYOUT - KEYOUT simply grounds the connection when TX is enabled.

Are you sure you're not just putting too much RF into that THP? Dial
the "PWR" setting way down on the K3 and try again ...

[Elecraft] K3 - Key Out Question

2009-12-20 Thread Jack Nelson
Good evening. I'm attempting to use my K3 with a Tokyo High Power HL-1.2Kfx
amp. On the amp, when STBY (which has 12v on it) is grounded, the relay
clicks, and the "On Air" led lightsjust like it should. However, when a
cable is connected between the K3's Key Out jack, and the STBY on the amp,
the amp shuts down with an "Over Drive" warning as soon as the K3 is keyed.
The K3's power is passed through the amp to the watt meter and dummy load.

I noticed the Key Out jack on the K3 has 4.75vdc on it whether it's in the
Tune position or not. Is this normal. I don't think the amp likes seeing the
voltage from the K3.

It is Key Out - not amplifier PTT. The difference is subtle but
simple. However, if you don't want your amplifier keyed, put
the amp in standby.

That's right - it does. Again, the signal is "Key Out" not
"Amplifier PTT." Key out should ALWAYS follow the straight
key (or internal keyer) input regardless of whether the K3
is producing power.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Key out (was CW sideband)

2009-04-23 Thread David Gilbert

That isn't the problem. Even if you have VOX off, hitting the paddles
activates the T/R relay line to the amplifier. It does so even if you
put the K3 into TEST mode. There's no power output, but the amp relay
(and anything else that may be activated by PTT) engages.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Key out (was CW sideband)

2009-04-23 Thread Brian Machesney
If you don't want power output when you hit the key, turn off the VOX while
in CW mode - the rig responds with "PTT" in the message area. To get power
out with VOX off, you must press the XMIT button or active the PTT (with a
footswitch, for example) while keying the paddles.

Depending on what you mean, this is also the answer to the "full QSK"
statement. VOX "on" means that pressing the key activates the transmitter.
QSK on means the RX is active between code elements. Here is the "truth
table" for VOX and QSK:

VOX QSK
Off (message = PTT) Off (message = SEMI) XMIT button or PTT to
transmit
Off On (message = FULL) Same as Off - Off
On (message = VOX)Off  Key = transmit;
no RX between elements
On On Key =
transmit; RX between elements

Hi Phil,

If the 30L-1 keying input, with its very high negative voltage, was ever
hooked directly to the K3's keying output, there is a very good chance
you may have destroyed the K3s output keying device.

working properly. It's in the closed position. If I take the other

it without my keying the K3. If I hook it direct to the 30L-1 it keys

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Key out

2009-02-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
Phil,

What is the possibility that you damaged the K3 KEYOUT by connecting the
negative voltage to it?

Check with an ohmmeter connected across the KEYOUT jack on the K3 - put
the K3 in TX TEST just to be safe. If it reads close to zero ohms with
no respect for keyup or keydown (or PTT or TUNE), then the driving
HEXFET has been damaged. OTOH, if the resistance is high during keyup
periods, then there must be some fault with your cable or its connectors.

Phil,

I had the same issue when I hooked up an SB200. Because the keying voltage
in the amp is negative, you can't connect to the K3 directly. I put in an
intermediate relay, which works OK. I might install the Harbach "soft-key"

Have you put a continuity tester across "KEY OUT"? So long as you connect
the positive side to the center, it should only read closed when the K3 is
transmitting.

[Elecraft] [K3] KEY OUT

2008-12-07 Thread Monty Shultes
I have a problem but can't determine if it's between the ears or in the radio.

I can not get KEY OUT to key my amp when using VOX. It keys only when PTT or
XMIT is pushed. The amp is new to me, an ALS-600. I have searched the archives
and believe this should work.

Help please.

The main benefit would be to other transceivers you
may have, like my OMNI VI+, now I don't need to think
which of my rigs are okay for the amp. It's great to
know the K3 device is diode protected - K3 - what
else? !!!

The K3 Key out may be rated for 200 volts but if you use it with an

because there is no protection diode in the SB220 and the field
collapse voltage can exceed 1000 volts.

Inside the K3, is Key Out a relay or solid state?

[Elecraft] K3 - KEY OUT missing

2008-08-09 Thread Benny Aumala

Anybody with these symptoms:
With mike PTT (hard ground) I can easily command the amplifier through K3.
But with straight key or inbuilt keyer the KEY OUT is not grounding.
K3 itself sends OK.
Unfortunately I have not found schematic of back panel and the
power FET used in keying.
It also crossed my mind to have some switch wrong.
