We ordered a refrigerator last March, and it wasn't delivered till October,
so there are a lot of delays across all manufacturing.

Not true. We're one of the lucky ones whose home survived the summer's
wildfires, but 3 weeks without power turned our fridge into a home for
all sorts of stinking mold. The lead time on a new one was four months,
and actual delivery was two months past that. Want to buy an RV to live
in where your home used to be? Lead time is 6-12 months. Lead time for
furniture we ordered around that time was 4-6 months. Two chairs we
ordered two weeks are quoted for November. My XYL ordered a loom two
months ago that she doesn't expect to see before July.

I don't know where the fridge was mfd, but all the other stuff was/is
made by small companies in the Sierra Nevada, the midwest and the

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-31 Thread Wes
I agree with Dave, although unlike him, I have ordered a K4, on the "no deposit"
plan, so I'm not out any money.  Of course, no one is actually out of money,
other than the opportunity cost, if they chose to bail out.

I sympathize with Elecraft's plight, but issues have plagued everyone and one
would think that a company that manufactures communication equipment would
communicate with their customer base.  Of course, they aren't expected to
advertise every problem in their business activity, but frequent tidbits would
keep the faithful happy.

Frankly, I got tired of waiting and wondering, and wanting at least one new
radio before I croak, bought a TS-890.  Shortly after I did a fire in one of
Kenwood's semiconductor suppliers plant stalled their deliveries.  But they
announced this, found a workaround and began deliveries again, albeit at a $500
price increase.  Will I still buy a K4?  I dunno but I'm still an Elecraft fan
with a K3, K3S, Kpod, KPA500 and KAT500, the latter two work well with the Kenwood.

In my day job, working for a supplier of technology to a wide swath of
consumer electronics manufacturers, I've observed over the past year
major shifts in demand and the kinds of products people are buying.
There have been surges in demand for some categories of products, and
collapses in demand for other categories; all of which foil production
and distribution plans which are normally designed to play-out of 18-36
months. There have been supply chain disruptions. There have been
shipping and logistics disruptions. The disruptions go deep into almost
every component and service you can imagine.

Elecraft, or any small company building a niche product, who manages to
stay solvent throughout all of this disruption is to be admired, even if
their plans need to change radically.

As for the perceived lack of communication: I can also understand their
reluctance to say much when they have their own uncertainty about the
future.

About me: I'm happy to wait to order a K4 until they offer the kit. For
me, it's a hobby, not my livelihood.

If you believe all of that to be true, clearly you haven't been
following the posts here on the reflector.

Besides, I don't find "if you can't accept being in the dark ask for
your money back" to be sound business practice.  It certainly wouldn't
have been tolerated in the large business I ran for several years.

many of the same types of growing pains in bringing a wonderful new

Early one Monday morning, I had a call from that CEO advising me

The natives are getting restless and it would be good to hear
something official from Elecraft.  It's been too long since we've
heard much of anything.  I would like to know if I can expect my
Group 1 order, submitted on August 8, 2019, has any chance of
getting to me before summer, 2021 begins or is it likely that I will
have to wait another year.  I could have asked much the same
question a year ago never expecting that a year from then, there
would still be no K4 sitting on my table by now.  By the way, when I
submitted my order the expected shipping date was estimated to be
November or December, 2019. That's pre-pandemic.

"Group 1, done by May" ??  Would be nice.  I am not going to hold my
breath. The few (2?), "I got a UPS package", were from orders entered
the first day.  Group 1 was not closed until Jan 2020??

"I Think" some of the communications from Elecraft are "hung up" with
the Ferengi print from the online event keeping Elecraft from
re-publishing any of the online event communication until the end of the
30 day "hold".  If I was running the online event, I would want
exclusive "use" of any publications for the full 30 days.  So, 16? Apr...

Yes, I could pay my $10 and see all the doc.  I was unavailable during
the actual event, so I didn't sign up at all.

The last I looked, the KX3 is back ordered, too.

I would not mind an additional 6 month delay, IF I was told it was
because Elecraft was moving to TN so that they could save 10% over
current cost/taxes in CA.  I don't expect a move to happen. So, 60 days
till the end of May, can they do it?

I placed my Group 1 order a week or so before Thanksgiving 2019...

I am curious. Did you miss the update that was done via the remote Hamvention a
few weeks ago. Group 1 clears in May?? Is your communication comment based on
lack of website info? Customer’s that paid (me) should get emails every week??
I feel like I have been kept in the loop. That’s quite different than being

It is puzzling to see the lack of substantive information as other have posted.
This has not been how Wayne and Eric and Elecraft have operated in the past.

I don't believe it is asking too much for regular updates on delivery dates.

Just because some are not happy with a delay does not mean that tehy don't want
the product. This radio is a lot of money for many people. I doubt they are
doing so well that they can afford to chase off a portion of their business.
It cost far more to bring in new customers than it does to keep old ones.

It is puzzling to see the lack of substantive information as other have
posted.  This has not been how Wayne and Eric and Elecraft have operated
in the past.

I don't believe it is asking too much for regular updates on delivery
dates.

Just because some are not happy with a delay does not mean that tehy
don't want the product.  This radio is a lot of money for many people.
I doubt they are doing so well that they can afford to chase off a
portion of their business.  It cost far more to bring in new customers
than it does to keep old ones.

None of it changes the fact that lots of people have put out a lot of money

There isn't the same risk/reward ratio here that your example had. Apples and

There are lots of reasons why Elecraft could be granted some slack for major
and repeated delays in shipping the K4, but the part I don't understand is the
almost total absence of regular communication on the delivery status. It makes
no sense at all. If Wayne can find the time to tell us about his latest
pedestrian mobile contact he should be able to tell his investors where the
company stands on actually producing the product that they paid for.

I'm just an interested observer here since I haven't ordered a K4, but that
doesn't change the fact that I sympathize with those who did.

Re: [Elecraft] Where are the K4 reviews?

2021-03-30 Thread Lyn Norstad
I can’t imagine how it would feel to know that I had laid out $4k two years
ago, and still be waiting for fulfillment. NO, actually I can.

Several years ago, an up-and-coming system integration business I had been
associated with for several years (as a VAR) was going thru many of the same
types of growing pains in bringing a wonderful new product to market. The CEO
vowed he would run the business as if they were broke, which they very nearly
were. But the employees were faithful believers in the company and the
product, and worked very hard to make it a success.

Early one Monday morning, I had a call from that CEO advising me that they had
sold the company to another industry player (a non-competitor) and that they
wanted me to join them for lunch to discuss the deal. My fear and trepidation
slowly disappeared that day as I met the new management “team” (with all the
old R team still hard at work), got viable answers to all the hard questions
and quickly recognized how an immediate cash infusion ($10 Million) had an
amazing ability to totally turn things around, grease the wheels, and create an
industry shakeup that precipitated a wave of further consolidation and rapid
development.

It was a win-win situation born out of the impending potential disaster we had
all feared.

Hang in there. Times might seem tough, but there are some very smart people at
work here.
