Eric, Interesting and neat. I should have expected you were already on top of this. :-) I just went back to the K3 and played with it a bit. Just by listening, the monitor delay seems to be the same whether I have VOX enabled or not. This is just the normal acceptable delay I have come to expect in the K3's monitor. The Smooth Voice Controller had a nominal 85mSec delay (QST article April 1992 pg. 42) and, if I recall correctly, seemed much more noticeable than what I am hearing in the K3. Eric, can you comment on the amount of delay used for the K3 VOXing? (Saves me setting up for a measurement.) Does the monitor come before that delay? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] VOX on the K3 - Smooth Voice Controller
The DSP Tx audio filtering adds a delay of 10 to 15 msec (I don't remember the exact value off the top of my head) but the VOX detector is before the filtering. The net result is that very little, if any, of the first syllable is clipped when using VOX. The monitor is derived from the 15 kHz IF within the DSP, which only happen when the radio is in transmit, so you can hear if any syllable truncation is occurring and adjust things accordingly. There is an menu option to bypass the 15 kHz IF demodulation for monitoring and just pass the audio through, but this is bypassed when you adjust mic gain or clipping so you can hear the effect of the adjustment. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] VOX on the K3 - Smooth Voice Controller
Thanks Lyle for the good explanation. And, Rich, yes, I found CONFIG:TX MON in the PDF manual. (It was not in my printed manual.) Mine is set to Normal. So the VOX PTT to voice delay is an artifact of the DSP filtering delays. And the difference I was hearing (and remember of the Smooth Voice Controller) is the difference between the 10-15mSec and 85mSec. So let me reword my original comments: It would be really neat if the K3 had a setting for 85mSec or so of voice delay on the VOX. The current 10-15mSec is better than zero but still does not approach the really smooth VOXing achieved by the AA box at 85mSec or so. Love my K3 even if it doesn't have 85mSec. This is just frosting on the VOX. :-) 73, Bob N7ZO -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Lyle Johnson Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2013 10:19 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K3] VOX on the K3 - Smooth Voice Controller The DSP Tx audio filtering adds a delay of 10 to 15 msec (I don't remember the exact value off the top of my head) but the VOX detector is before the filtering. It's helps to remember that ANY DSP takes time. Each A/D and D/A conversion takes time. The time difference between input and output is called latency, and is a function of the processor, data formats, bandwidths, and rates, the processing algorithms, the need to minimize distortions of various sorts, and, to some extent, the skill of the programmer. Delay can also be added at any point in the signal chain to accomplish things like the technique described to improve VOX action. Another use is improving response time for peak limiting -- the main signal path has a bit of delay added before the limiting block, but the detector and control to the limiting block are un-delayed (or have no intentional delay). The human brain has varying sensitivity to delay, depending on many factors. Most of us are not bothered by hearing a copy of our own speech delayed less than about 10 msec; increase that delay to more than about 50 msec and we have trouble talking. Most sound system professionals have heard even the best announcers slow down and stop talking when confronted with 100 msec of delay, which is what happens when the talker is 120 ft or so from the speakers in a big sound system. 73, Jim K9YC . __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VOX
Yes, this is the reason for using VOX to turn digital mode transmit on and off. Makes life in the real world of multiple simultaneous software applications much easier. I routinely run two instances of WSJT along with JT65-HF at the the same time. (I could try to run them all through LP-BRIDGE, except that it's just one more layer of complex code, and I know the main K-3 utility, K3-EZ, and (I think) K3 Frequency Memory Editor won't run reliably through LP-BRIDGE. VOX is just a simpler solution for digital.) LOL I operate both WSJT and SSB on 6 meters. Usually when I switch from WSJT mode to SSB mode (with the VOX on), my mic trips the transmitter a few times until I remember to shut off the VOX. One of the local 6m hams, who is ALWAYS monitoring 50125, keys his rig and coughs a couple times into his mic, just to needle me. This kind of teasing is innocuous enough, but I could sure do without it. :-/ When can we get independent VOX status for data modes and SSB? Assuming it's still on the list, how far down the list is it, Wayne? Re: [Elecraft] K3 VOX
I have requested this a couple times. So far it has not made its way into the firmware. I use Direct imput for my JT65 PSK modes and want to be able to leave VOX set for data and PTT for Phone. I really really wish they would add this. WOuld help avoid accidental keying of the mic when switching modes. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-VOX-tp5326508p5645132.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 VOX
I thought this had been put on the wish list, just over a year ago: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Data-mode-VOX-persists-to-USB-td3778881.html?by-user=t#a3778881 There's a real mixture of PTT methods out there - WSJT can use a serial port, WSPR can now use CAT and serial port, HRD can use CAT and serial port JT65-HF can use a serial port - to name a few. The lowest common denominator and simplest option for all these is the use of VOX in data mode. It would be nice to swing back and forth between voice and data without having to worry about whether the VOX is on/off. You could tie up another serial port for PTT in most instances - but that's just more cabling. Also check your VOX level in the menu. It needs to be turned up very high when using it for digital modes. You are correct to use DataA for PSK and other audio based digital modes. The opposite is also true. If you turn off VOX in RTTY, it stays off, regardless of previous settings in SSB mode. I suspect it is because DATA A and AFSK A are special cases of SSB. You will find that FSK D and PSK D are special cases of CW as well. The VOX status is maintained separately for the SSB cases (USB/LSB/DATA A/AFSK A) and the CW cases (CW/CW-R/FSK D/ PSK D). 73, ... I first saw a similar problem earlier today when I turned on NR on SSB. To remedy it I need to increase the NR setting to something like F(2-4)- (1-4). example - F-1-3 exhibits this problem, but F-4-1 does not exhibit this problem. Re: [Elecraft] K3 VOX question
Will the K3 DSP software include a delay in the transmit audio chain to prevent the missing first syllable issue that is common with other VOX systems? That is our intent. One rig that uses a fixed audio delay effectively to avoid the missing first syllable problem is the Kenwood TS-870. But an unintended consequence of the design is that the transmit audio monitor is, at least for some users, difficult or impossible to listen to. I prefer to monitor my audio to be able to quickly detect problems, but find I have to turn off the monitor on an 870. If an audio delay is used in the K3, I suggest that it should be possible to adjust or at least disable it as a configuration option.
