I have installed E18 and everything went well except when I click on the desktop and bring up the menu nothing on the menu works. IOW when I click on anything on the menu nothing happens, the menu just goes away. I had E17 installed up until now and it worked without a hitch, kinda wish I had just stayed with it now. Anyway could there be something in my .e configuration files that would be causing this? I really hate to delete them but I will if it's a problem. -- Slashdot TV. Video for Nerds. [e-users] E18 / elm 1.8 and themes...
I have a question about themes: If one is running enlightenment 0.18 (and elementary 1.8) and one changes the theme under enlightenment 0.18, it appears that *enlightenment* itself picks up the new these, *elementary* (elm widgets) don't. The themes I am testing are from an enlightenment 0.17 install, so I *guess* this could be the problem, but I am not sure. Is this expected behavior or is something else wrong? If the problem is theme version mismatch, are there any already build E18 themes other then the default theme (Dark) available? At this point I am only interested in testing things. (I suppose I could just make some random 'tweaks' of the default theme (Dark), but if there was a fully developed theme or two to play with that would be better.) -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 / hel...@deepsoft.com Deepwoods Software-- http://www.deepsoft.com/ () ascii ribbon campaign -- against html e-mail /\ www.asciiribbon.org -- against proprietary attachments -- Subversion Kills Productivity. Re: [e-users] E18 -- Lid Closed -- Suspend binding
I have installed acpid as an optional dependency while installing tlp package (http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-management.html) but not enabled it as a systemd service. What fs type is /usr/include/ on? Most times those turn out to be filesystem corruption of one kind or another. Instead of just saying permission denied when listing the contents of something like /usr/include/eina-1, it would also show me the list of files in the directory, but display ??? as the file permissions. [e-users] E18 theme with Lua, how to get desktops names?
Hi, I am trying to modify the default theme and also trying to see how lua script works with the edc files. I have already find the part related to the little preview of the desktops (in edc/pager.edc with the group e/modules/pager/desk which seems to be used in order to create a preview for each desktops and the e.text.label is the part for the desktop name) and read the documentation for lua scripting in edc files (and make some basic tests). Is there a way to get the desktops names with lua. Thanks. Cedlemo -- Android apps run on BlackBerry 10 Introducing the new BlackBerry 10.2.1 Runtime for Android apps. [e-users] E18 power options, software update, etc.
Hello all, I have been following the Enlightenment project since day one. However, I have not actually used it in over a decade - until now. Perhaps I was feeling nostalgic, but for whatever reason I recently decided to take E18 for a spin. I turns out that I absolutely love it, and it has pretty much taken over as my DE. Unfortunately I didn't research what I was getting into, and honestly at the time was expecting to take a look and then toss it for my usual system. So it turns E18 is a bit on the buggy side with the occasional application and complete system crashes along misc. odd behavior and most of the power options not available. At one point I tried to downgrade to E17 (Ubuntu 12.04 based system), but that did not go well. I have everything set up the way I want and will subscribe to your other lists to keep track of development. I have developed something of a golden path work flow that greatly minimizes crashes, but I wondering if there is any way at all to get the power options working. It would be nice to suspend my computer without closing everything and backing out to lightdm. Also, when I installed E18, I allowed it to check for updates. What is the frequency of checks, and is there a system update function I should be manually running from time to time? Re: [e-users] E18 power options, software update, etc.
Hi William. I find E18 to be more stable than E17, so I'd recommend you stick with that. As for crashes, are you talking about WM crashes, where you're prompted to hit F1 to restart? Or are you talking about Linux kernel crashes? In which case, it could be the video driver responsible. When diagnosing a crash, it's usually helpful to get a list of your OS, video hardware, video driver, hmmm, maybe kernel version as well. Any relevent error messages would be nice too. Check out your .xsession-errors file for those. If you can replicate the crash consistently, then give us the steps to do so, and we'll see if we can do it as well. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that E18 is crashing. I've been using it for ... checking the datestamp on the executable ... a month? No, wait, that's E18.2. I used a few alpha releases months before that, and never had a crash. Then again, I've never used the suspend feature, so if that's what's triggering the instability, it's out of my field of experience. Updates? Well, haven't played with this myself, but looking at the source code, seems like it's a base of 1 hour, multiplied by some later config number. No idea about this, as I haven't enabled the check, and I can't find any place to configure it in the settings. I know what you mean about Enlightenment. I've tweaked it to suit my style and taste. It works so well, I can't imagine using anything else. To me, other windowing systems feel clunky and inconvenient. Re: [e-users] E18 power options, software update, etc.
I had been experiencing the f1 error. Also complete freezes where I had to press alt + f1 to get into a console and kill everything. Most often, applications would crash in tiled mode if I tried to move them around. After I sent my message to the list, I re-installed Enlightenment using synaptic and checked a few things that were not initially installed, but sounded important. Fortunately my configuration was saved. I know something is different. Prior to the re-install, every time I right clicked an image and select Shotwell my system would completely freeze and I would have to go into a console, sometimes hit the power button. That problem is gone after the re-install so I am hopeful. The lack of power options is still nagging though. You mentioned 18.2. Is that the latest because it's what I am running. For the record it's an NVIDIA GT 610 with the latest 331.2 drivers and kernel 3.12.6 If problems return, I will better document them. Thanks, William On 01/28/2014 07:27 AM, Dave wrote: Hi William. Re: [e-users] E18 power options, software update, etc.
Not sure what you mean by power options. I thought you were talking about suspend to disk. That's there. I believe it works, though I don't use it myself. You do see that option in the System menu, don't you? If it doesn't work, then it's probably because your enlightenment_sys isn't set SUID. Check your lib/enlightenment/utils/enlightenment_sys binary. The latest stable E was 18.2. Up to last night, that is. I'm sure you've seen the 18.3 announcement now. Re: [e-users] E18 power options, software update, etc.
That's what I meant by power options, except suspend to ram. I believe suspend to disk would be hibernate. Initially after install, everything was grayed out except log off, reboot, and power off, so I had to log out to lightdm and suspend my computer from there. So I finally issued the following command: sudo chmod 4755 /usr/lib/enlightenment/utils/enlightenment_sys And logged out and back in. After that, nothing was grayed out - however selecting the option to suspend resulted in a black screen with a movable cursor and a computer that was still chugging away. I had to drop into a console, kill a bunch of stuff and then bring lightdm back up. Since that was a bit of a disaster, I have since been issuing the command sudo pm-suspend in a terminal and the system suspends just fine - thankfully. I have Googled endlessly about this issue and it seems a lot of people are having the exact same problem with E18. From what I have found, Rasterman is aware of the issue and a bug report was filed about a month ago. I haven't compiled 18.3 yet, but I did not see this on the list of bug fixes. BTW - no more system instability issues. If you have any further input on the issue it would be welcome. My .e configurations have survived seemingly intact. Hi all, I just did a fresh install from (with an old config) from E18 from trunk. What came up early is that when I switch desktops the pop-up no longer appears - the one showing the (in my case) 3x4 matrix. Is that known or is that new? I used a clean build from 2013-11-06 so far so that I cannot easily report a regression. I had similar problems before the latest efl and e tarballs, which now work fine. But, before if the mixer stopped working, I would have to unload the mixer module and delete the mixer gadget. Restarted e, add the mixer module and gadget again and it would should the correct card and the mixer would work properly. ymmv. Re: [e-users] E18 ESTART - SLEEP messages in .xsession-errors
Hi, I've looked into the code and the messages are generated by e_main.c, function _e_main_cb_idle_after (from line 1875 to 1900). It looks like this: static Eina_Bool _e_main_cb_idle_after(void *data __UNUSED__) { static int first_idle; edje_freeze(); #ifdef E18_RELEASE_BUILD first_idle = 1; if (first_idle) { TS(SLEEP); first_idle = 0; e_precache_end = EINA_TRUE; } #else if (first_idle++ 60) { TS(SLEEP); if (!first_idle) e_precache_end = EINA_TRUE; } #endif return ECORE_CALLBACK_RENEW; } E18_RELEASE_BUILD is defined, since it's from the release version, so the upper part is active. As far as I can see, this means, that every time the _e_main_cb_idle_after function is called, a SLEEP line is logged. Probably that was not the original intention, the first_idle = 1; line is causing trouble IMHO. Someone, who really knows, what's going on in the background should check this. :-) Regards, ADA On 23/12/13 16:23, Christian Bochu wrote: Hi all, Mon, 23 Dec 2013 14:21:30 +0100, Andreas Kurth use...@akurth.de a écrit : Hello, I compiled enlightenment 0.18.0 today and now I see tons of SLEEP messages being logged to .xsession-errors very frequently: [...] ESTART: 1630,45112 [0,01165] - SLEEP ESTART: 1630,45860 [0,00748] - SLEEP ESTART: 1630,46173 [0,00313] - SLEEP [...] 0.18.0-rc1 did not behave like that, IIRC. THAT is what is considered a shippable driver by ati. i lost several weeks of my life figuring that out. i shall never ever ever touch an ati gpu or driver again. i had to use fglrx because radeon open source drivers didn't support the hd4650 i had at the time. i was also bitten by it back in 2003 or so on the promise of better drivers with an R250 in a laptop i bought. nothing but pain there for years. nvidia based machines ran smoothly and fine - my ati machine was barely usable when it came to gl. i've been bitten twice by ati/radeon drivers on linux. i shall never again go there. ever. my advice to anyone who comes with XXX is broken on my ati/radeon, which, to this very day is still the case. a recent case of it is broken on fglrx but a move to radeon oss drivers made it work - just recently here, i will instantly advise to switch gpu's. problems have been minimal as long as i've avoided radeon/ati. i suggest people do the same for their own sanity. -- - Codito, ergo sum - I code, therefore I am -- The Rasterman (Carsten Haitzler)ras...@rasterman.com -- Rapidly troubleshoot problems before they affect your business. Hi, in this regard, do you know where we can find a list of drivers/cards that work OK with E? from personal experience anything from nvidia from an nv 6 or better will get you full gl accelertion. older and software should work fine. for intel - skip the gma3150 - it's better never mentioned in polite company, but otherwise any intel gpu from the GM45 on (except the prior aberration on). note that many intel atom chips (older ones) use a non-intel gpu. other than that it's basically it depends. i couldnt say about any via cards and most others are far too old, or we are talking embedded gpus - and there it's a mess of what may or may not work, but i can say the tegra3 plus nvidia provided drivers work well. i have had a tegra2 work before but can't verify these days. -- - Codito, ergo sum - I code, therefore I am -- The Rasterman (Carsten Haitzler)ras...@rasterman.com -- Rapidly troubleshoot problems before they affect your business. An ancient PIII with Mobility Radeon (R200?) uses software, but e17 loads and runs fine (well sluggishly, but on that laptop it is to be expected due to its age). I will be trying out e18 soon as soon as I can get efl to compile on it. -- Regards, Mick -- Rapidly troubleshoot problems before they affect your business. You are very vocal in your opinion about fglrx. I just think your blanket statement about get another gpu are unrealistic in real life, and reflect badly on the project as a whole. Maybe tone done the rhetoric a touch, or stfu on the matter, or issue a policy statement as to what the project supports that doesn't leave a whole segment out in the cold. Re: [e-users] e18 on Radeon? WAS: Terminology 0.4.0 is out!
Raster, If you read the post instead of getting your hackles up whenever you hear the name AMD/ATI you'd have noticed he was using the OSS driver. In your opinion, is the OSS radeon driver itself so bad? You've got a definite problem with people disagreeing with your opinion, and in some cases there are people who don't have a choice about what laptop they receive from the boss! Be realistic, and if you don't want to support AMD GPUs AT ALL, then state so openly in the enlightenment documentation! Don't say it's officially supported but then come down hard on anyone who calls you on it, that's not just being childish, it's being downright dishonest. And you're baiting flamewars by not coming out on the position officially. So, yeah, FGLRX sucks, we all agree, and nobody who asks your help uses it anymore. Done. Write it up that E will never be supported on FGLRX, that way complaints about it stop. Easy as that. Now as for the OSS driver, if, in fact, there is a bug in the radeon code, THAT IS WORTH INVESTIGATING! Whether the bug is on your side, or radeon's side! By jumping down people's throats whenever they ask for help using the OSS driver, you're not just discouraging people from using E, you're also potentially throwing away a good opportunity for the radeon guys to find bugs in their code if it's not in yours! Yes, you're a genius writing E, and we all appreciate the work you've done on it, but your attitude with people coming to the user's mailing list asking for help with a legitimate complaint about a bug with all OSS software and drivers is dowright hostile! If you want to be mean to people, join a boxing or martial arts club, you'll get all that hatred out of your system there and maybe, just maybe, you'll find the internet has one less enraged project leader. I'm not saying people yelling at you is fun and should be tolerated, but reading through this particular topic I've not seen any particularly hostile attacks on you or your code beyond the fact that there's a bug when using the OSS radeon driver. If you can't accept that even 'O great master raster' occasionally has bugs in his code, or that other projects do and that E doesn't handle them as gracefully as KDE or Gnome, well, that's another problem, but not one I expect to be realistic since you've had a rather civilized and efficient team helping you with E for a long time. *rant against hate in my inbox over* Goeland, long time E-user On 11.12.2013 13:54, Carsten Haitzler (The Rasterman) wrote: On Wed, 11 Dec 2013 12:30:35 +0200 Alan McKinnon alan.mckin...@gmail.com said: actually i had a longer reply, but i'll just keep it short. so in alan mckinnon land it's perfectly fine to tell people offering advice based on direct experience to stfu when they disagree with you (you seem to like radeons because you actively chose to have a boatload of money spent on a system tied to one), but telling them to stfu - only opinions that you approve of allowed (lest they reflect badly!), but your usage of that expletive (it's not exactly hidden), is totally maintaining the high-ground there and having no reflection at all? a very interesting land you live in there. very interesting. p.s. i never said the gpu's were bad. you really should read better. i said it's a bad idea to have an ati gpu. the gpu begets the drivers which beget a system hard-lock when used as advertised. but how dare i have an opinion on that, even given personal experience to the tune of having wasted my own personal $3000 (not company money) on a machine not that far back, and the fact that i have actively practiced my solution to the problem (avoided ati gpus) for years, and it's worked wonders for me. p.p.s. a radeon 7850 is a desktop model gpu. read the original mail. the 7850m is the mobile version for laptops (normally). sure - he could have been loose with his wording, but given the wording the original poster never indicated the gpu was not easily replaceable and the information given indicates it could be.
