RE: Exchange Redundancy

2002-05-09 Thread Schneider, Bryan D.

Clustering won't help you if your problem is an EDB problem. But,
clustering will help you if (like your original request) you desire
redundancy for the server, the Windows OS, and all processes and
services running on that server.

If you have problems with services stopping, Dr. Watson or Blue Screens
or even intermittent hardware failures, the passive server will fail
over and start your virtual Exchange server on the other hardware.

We don't have many problems at all with Exchange or hardware, but where
clustering is really advantageous is when you have to do MAINTENANCE -
such as applying security hotfixes, service packs, or if you're having
problems with a stuck service that requires a reboot. Trigger the
servers to failover and you've got the machine to yourself.

Failovers typically take about 30 seconds. During that time Outlook will
appear to hang, but then (I always recommend Outlook 2002) it will
reconnect to the other server and continue normally.

The cluster manager will also attempt to start services when they've
gone down before they failover - if that's what you want it to do. So,
it's pretty flexible and does a lot for uptime and customer
satisfaction.

I didn't even want to go down that path, but you're correct. You don't
need
clustering if you use good quality hardware and proactive monitoring.

And even if/when you do failover, like when it takes the Trend service a
couple cpu cycles too long to start back up when you're forcing a
pattern
update for klez, your users will still almost definitely notice the
failure,
and you will still get people calling the help desk to ask why. It's
not
seamless, and in most cases not necessary anyway.

Having just had our sole Exchange server go down, is there a way of
having a
redundant server (or load balancing) that is an exact replicar (in terms
of
user mailboxes etc..)? Basically i am after failover redundacy, so
that if one server goes down it will not effect users abilities to send
and
recive mail. - Is this practical?

RE: Clustered Environment

2002-05-09 Thread Schneider, Bryan D.

Our University has about 13,000 students and 2500 faculty/staff. We run
an Exchange 2000 cluster on two quad Dells (700Mhz Zeon) on the back end
and two 1-U Dell web servers for OWA. CLARiiON SAN for disk storage.

Active Directory is on two separate domain controllers.

Students use OWA, faculty/staff use a combination of Outlook 2002 or
POP3/IMAP clients while on campus, OWA off.

If you follow the sizing guidelines, you may be surprised. But we
checked with several other universities roughly the same size and they
run comfortably with this same configuration.

Clustering is great for maintenance and reliability. We don't have to
wait for 4:00am Sunday morning to apply security hotfixes, etc.

I had the same problem. You must install E2K as the account which you
provided when you were doing forestprep. Once I did that then evrything
worked. Also remeber to add that account to have service admin rights in 5.5

  Hi All,

I am having a problem with ADC connection agreement, I
think, here. There is no option to move mailbox under
exchange tasks for users after initial replication, after
creating a connection agreement. Here is my situation: -1 NT
  domain and 1 Win 2k domain (2 win2k sp2 server- dc)
-performed Netdiag-on DC and member server -performed dcdiag-
on DC and member server -Installed ADC on DC (also global
catalog server) -Forestprep - on DC -Domainprep - on DC
-Setup ADC with one way connection agreement(did not allow
two way agreement-due to 2 domains?) -install E2k Sp2 on
member server, applied available hot fix.
  - install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the
machine from where you are trying to move mailbox)

I did not use ADMT because the users were already created
manually by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users
container but created another container on the same level as
users). Therefore I pointed to the same container in the
  connection agreement also(CA properties--from exchange).

The only available tasks are Delete Email addresses and
enable IM in Exchange task wizard. Is it necessary to use ADMT ?

  What am I missing here?

Any help would be really appreciated.

  Thanks

RE: Forests prep domain prep

2002-05-09 Thread Soysal, Serdar

If you don't run them prior to the Exchange setup, they do run automatically
in the background. That's probably why your Exchange install took such a
long time. In larger forests where you have multiple domains/trees, it is a
better idea to run forestprep and wait a while until schema changes are
replicated to all DCs and then run domainprep and Exchange server setup.

RE: Forests prep domain prep

2002-05-09 Thread matt

OK, here's what I'm trying to do. Installed win 2k advance server sp2.
Exchange ENT 2k sp2. Went through a process of setting up
Mutliple Domains this exchange server will handle. Set up separate OU's and
groups (user and admin) for each OU. Deleted global
Address list and created address lists for each OU. I set the Msquerydatadn
advanced options to each OU. When I look in the address
Global list for each domain..there is nothing in there. I can connect via
OWA and use mail server for each OU. But I cannot connect using outlook.
Comes back and says could not resolve name..because there are no names in
address global list for each OU??? What did I miss or screw up?!!

RE: Exchange Redundancy

This however does not help you one whit if the MAINTENANCE required is
Exchange maintenance.

It's
not
seamless, and in most cases not necessary anyway.

that if one server goes down it will not effect users abilities to send

I did an upgrade of 20 servers in the last couple of weeks. I went from 3.52

I did see something on Trend's website about the NON-ability of an upgrade.
You have to totally un-install (including deleting registry entries) the old

I'm currently running 3.8 without any real problems.

However, save out your attachment blocking list to a text file before
starting the upgrade.

On three separate machines, the UPGRADE method did not work and I ended up
having to uninstall Trend before going up to the version 3.8. Also, check
for service packs to Trend before starting it's use in production (there's
at least one hotfix that was developed to fix problems with scheduled/manual
scans).

I am considering upgrading to Trend ScanMail 3.8 (w/ESE API) from 3.52
(AVAPI). I have researched deja with not much luck..I figured there would
be much more infoalso the swynk faq found NO results...still haven't
figured out those archives! My question is how many of you have made that
upgrade and are satisfied? Is it worth the extra possible data corruption
on our database? I see that there were some bugs when it first came out but
surely that has been fixed with 3.8. Any input would be greatly
appreciated. dave

RE: Exchange Migration woes...

2002-05-09 Thread Pillai, Raj

I installed E2k and did Forestprep as Administrator(Win2k) who has all the
required rights(this is a small shop).
Administrator(win2k) is also a member of the Exchange Admin group in NT.
Some more stuff I discovered:
-I can telnet to the LDAP port 389 of Exchange 5.5 from the DC (win2k
domain)
-error message in CA while creating a 2 way agreement: Unable to create
intra-organizational CA using specified exchange 5.5 server.error # c103aa39
-Distribution lists are replicated as mail enabled contacts and not mail
enabled groups

I will closely scrutinize the Admin rights again to see if there is anything
missing.

Thanks for all your help.

  Thanks

OK is there a tool out there that will let me say have
different size restrictions for different groups of users?

I do not want to do this on a per person basis..it took a

But I do say have a group of users which could use more room

Cost to upgrade from 5.5 to Exchange 2000

2002-05-09 Thread Arch Willingham

Can someone out there smarter than me tell me how to figure out how much it
costs to upgrade an Exchange 5.5 site with a 5 CAL to the same thing in
Exchange 2000? I have gone to both CDW and Microsoft's sites and there are a
zillion options but none says diddly squat about an upgrade. The impression
I got was that it is almost like you have to buy the whole thing brand new
and you don't get any credit for already owning the product?

Thanks,

Arch Willingham

Re: Exchange Migration woes...

2002-05-09 Thread M2web

The exact same error was what I had.
I removed the E2K installation. Removed any ADC connector, and recreated it
and allowed it to synch. Then re-installed E2K with the account which had
the right to install E2K and aslo gave that account the service admin rights
at all levels in 5.5.

I installed E2k and did Forestprep as Administrator(Win2k) who has all the
required rights(this is a small shop).
Administrator(win2k) is also a member of the Exchange Admin group in NT.
 Some more stuff I discovered:
-I can telnet to the LDAP port 389 of Exchange 5.5 from the DC (win2k
 domain)
-error message in CA while creating a 2 way agreement: Unable to create
 intra-organizational CA using specified exchange 5.5 server.error #
c103aa39
-Distribution lists are replicated as mail enabled contacts and not
mail
 enabled groups

I will closely scrutinize the Admin rights again to see if there is
anything
 missing.

 Thanks for all your help.

I had the same problem. You must install E2K as the account which you
provided when you were doing forestprep. Once I did that then evrything
worked. Also remeber to add that account to have service admin rights in
5.5

-Setup ADC with one way connection agreement(did not allow
two way agreement-due to 2 domains?) -install E2k Sp2 on
member server, applied available hot fix.
   - install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the
machine from where you are trying to move mailbox)

I did not use ADMT because the users were already created
manually by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users
container but created another container on the same level as
users). Therefore I pointed to the same container in the
   connection agreement also(CA properties--from exchange).

We have two remote Exchange sites that have their own Exchange servers
with
their own site names. I set them up so long ago, I am not sure I remember
how I did it. Anyway, we get all of the mail for the domain and forward on
the mail to the appropriate exchanges servers at the other site.

 Two questions:

 1. If I upgrade our Exchange Server from 5.5 SP4 to Exchange 2000, will it
stop working with those two sites if they stay at 5.5?
 2. Can I use the standard Exchange Server? I.E. is there any reason to
have
to go to the Enterprise thing?

 Thanks,

This is when the old Exchange Client comes in handy. You could have exported
the calendar to a PST and then deleted the calendar folder. The next time
you started OL, one would have been created.

It also sounds like you need the CDO hotfix for Exchange. BB support should
be able to help with that.

Subject: Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder? (on server)

I had one user who could not syncronize her calendar over the air with her
blackberry. The errors in the event log basically said that the CDO stuff
could not access the calendar. Email was forwarding just fine. After trying
all sorts of things on the blackberry server, I finally created a new
mailbox (with a different username) and synced the blackberry up with that
(the calendar worked fine).

I then exported everything from the user's mailbox to a PST file (so I could
delete the mailbox and create a new one just like it). After exporting all
the mailbox contents I tried deleting everything from the calendar folder
(by using view by category and deleting everything). After doing only that
(i.e. not yet creating a new mailbox) the blackberry still would not sync
with the calendar (over the air). The calendar appeared completely empty
from an outlook 2000 client. When I tried via OWA there was an appointment
still showing up in the calendar (yikes).

After deleting the mailbox and creating a new one with the same alias and
email address, the old data was imported from the PST and the blackberry
syncs up fine now.

My only question was if there was some better way of fixing the calendar
short of what I did. I had tried all of the /cleanfreebusy /cleanreminder
/cleanshedplus options in outlook with no improvement.

Thanks

Delegate access for a remote user

2002-05-09 Thread Patrick

Hey,

I need to give one user the ability to send email and have it look like it
is coming from another users account (like delegate access), however the
user whose mailbox that the email has to look like it's coming from is a
non-local user and I do not have access to his Outlook is there a way that
I can do this.

-Setup ADC with one way connection agreement(did not allow

member server, applied available hot fix.
- install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the
machine from where you are trying to move mailbox)

I did not use ADMT because the users were already created
manually by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users

RE: Forests prep domain prep

2002-05-09 Thread Tom Meunier

Well, whadja go deleting the GAL for before you even knew whether E2k
worked? Anyway, I'm gonna assume everything's fine, because you gave
another clue. Those queries you're using can't be based upon OU. The
results in your address list creator may show them, but it won't work.
Create groups to mirror your OU's and base the query on that group's
membership. And you can't say group membership / begins with /
whatever or the corresponding LDAP query, you have to do group
membership / is exactly / cn=whatever,ou=whatever,dc=whatever,dc=com
Try that.

OK, here's what I'm trying to do. Installed win 2k advance
server sp2. Exchange ENT 2k sp2. Went through a process of
setting up Mutliple Domains this exchange server will handle.
Set up separate OU's and groups (user and admin) for each OU.
Deleted global Address list and created address lists for
each OU. I set the Msquerydatadn advanced options to each OU.
When I look in the address Global list for each domain..there
is nothing in there. I can connect via OWA and use mail
server for each OU. But I cannot connect using outlook. Comes
back and says could not resolve name..because there are no
names in address global list for each OU??? What did I miss
 or screw up?!!

If you don't run them prior to the Exchange setup, they do
run automatically in the background. That's probably why
your Exchange install took such a long time. In larger
forests where you have multiple domains/trees, it is a better
idea to run forestprep and wait a while until schema changes
are replicated to all DCs and then run domainprep and
 Exchange server setup.

By the way, I am running it in AVAPI mode which the eManager piece runs
better because I can forward the caught spam to a mailbox

I have now looked in the ADUC and can see the folders there.
I have also resolved the problem error regarding replicating from Exchange

2000 folders - DUH!).

So we now have public folder replication working fully to Exchange 5.5 but
unfortunately this is not working correctly to Exchange 2000 as it does
not appear in the exchange system manager, any ideas, troubleshooting
techniques?

POP3 Authentication using SASL

2002-05-09 Thread Schneider, Bryan D.

Looking for help using Outlook Express (POP3 or IMAP) and checking the
box Log on using Secure Password Authentication on the servers tab.
This doesn't work and you get

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection.
Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a
long period of inactivity.
Account: 'webmail.mail.com, Server: 'webmail.mnsu.edu', Protocol: POP3,
Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Now we have and SSL certificate installed on the OWA box and setup for
POP3 and IMAP. In fact, on Outlook Express I can unselect Log on using
Secure Password Authentication and on the advanced tab select This
server requires a secure connection (SSL) and this works fine. The
password and the entire session is encrypted - even the userid/password
authentication.

The issue is with only encrypting the Authentication portion since in
the wizard for setting up the mail account the check box is there for
Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) and this is what
most people will check by default. This wants to use SASL over port 110,
but once again, this authentication gets rejected.

Can anyone help?

 Hi All,

I am having a problem with ADC connection
 agreement, I think,
here. There is no option to move mailbox under
 exchange tasks
for users after initial replication, after creating a
 connection
agreement. Here is my situation: -1 NT domain and 1 Win 2k
domain (2 win2k sp2 server- dc) -performed Netdiag-on DC and
member server -performed dcdiag- on DC and member server
-Installed ADC on DC (also global catalog server)
 -Forestprep -
on DC -Domainprep - on DC -Setup ADC with one way connection
agreement(did not allow two way agreement-due to 2 domains?)
-install E2k Sp2 on member server, applied available hot fix.

The only available tasks are Delete Email

smtp - UDP, TCP, or IP?

2002-05-09 Thread Hansen, Eric

Hi

Just averted a nasty disaster and I had a question, forgive my noobness as
I'm not a router guy but they are trying to make me one.

Last night we had a cisco guy come in and tighten down one of our routers
that borders our firewall. We had to delete all our access lists and
recreate them as such we had to create permits for all the various ports.
As part of our access statement we used tcp permit for 110 and 25. Well
it turned out that by doing this mail came in but didn't go out. I started
to think about it and with some of the IP stuff ive been reading about I
thought maybe smtp isn't part of tcp and maybe its part of udp. Well from
what I am told a statement of ip permit should cover it wherever smtp may
fall.

In this case it did, the new permit did work.

My question is, where does smtp fall? Should I have used a udp permit
statement instead?

SMTP is TCP port 25. SMTP does not use UDP, not is it an IP-layer
protocol.

Make sure you have all the rules, and in all directions. Maybe you are
accidentally blocking outbound TCP SYN packets on port 25?

Also, if your default policy is to drop without reply, make sure you at
least send a TCP RST for connect attempts to TCP port 113, which is the
auth protocol (also called ident). Many SMTP mail exchangers will do an
auth query, and if you just drop those packets on the floor, they may time
out or reject you.

If all else fails, use a packet sniffer to see what is going over the
wire.

ASP Lists ASP-Mail: http://www.asplists.com/aspmail
ASP Friends ASP.NET Mail:
http://www.aspfriends.com/aspfriends/ngfx-mail.asp
Wrox asp_cdo: http://p2p.wrox.com/list.asp?list=asp_cdo

And I just saw a new Yahoo! Group popping up which seems to be focused
on messaging collaboration application technology (also including
Instant Messaging and more stuff) at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mscollaboration ;-)

Getting in late. If your not or haven't done an Exchange upgrade, it is best

Dunno.. but it disturbs me that you don't remember having joined the
existing org and site (based on your previous posts) and that you can't
see
the E2K server from the Exchange 5.5 admin. In my mind that places your
configuration in the sufficiently fscked category such that I'd consider
 starting anew if possible.

I removed the E2K installation. Removed any ADC connector, and

I had the same problem. You must install E2K as the

you provided when you were doing forestprep. Once I did

evrything worked. Also remeber to add that account to
   have service
 admin rights in

I don't believe I was replying to you, but to Raj. I simply asked if the

unclear from his response as to what the actual situation was at the moment.

If you aren't happy with the method of inquiry and responses I use in
eliciting additional information and providing direction to those who pose
queries I offer several suggestions:

1. Ignore my posts.
2. Answer the questions instead and I'll endeavor to learn from your

3. Ask for a refund.

Hi All,

I am having a problem with ADC connection agreement, I think,
here. There is no option to move mailbox under
 exchange tasks
for users after initial replication, after creating a
 connection
agreement. Here is my situation: -1 NT domain and 1
 Win 2k domain
(2 win2k sp2 server- dc) -performed Netdiag-on DC and member
server -performed dcdiag- on DC and member server
 -Installed ADC
on DC (also global catalog server) -Forestprep - on DC
-Domainprep - on DC -Setup ADC with one way connection
agreement(did not allow two way agreement-due to 2 domains?)
-install E2k Sp2 on member server, applied available hot fix.
- install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the
machine from where you are trying to move mailbox)

I did not use ADMT because the users were already
 created manually
by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users
 container but
created another container on the same level as
 users). Therefore
I pointed to the same container in the connection agreement
also(CA properties--from exchange).

The only available tasks are Delete Email addresses
 and enable
IM in Exchange task wizard. Is it necessary to use ADMT ?

What am I missing here?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

RE: KVS Enterprise Vault

2002-05-09 Thread Christian Schlosser

Hi Ken,

I asked a similar question last week, and Paul Hurst had sent this reply:

snip---
I found that 'Archive one' would have required at least some PF servers
unless you want one with 200Gb+ PF store, eCon did not SIS the PST's when
migrated back in and was heavy on the install with two CD's and lots of
install options (Oracle/SQL etc;) also their pre-sales tech support was very
light, but does support UNIX back end servers and uses MAPI to retrieve the
messages (good for OST's/Palms). We went for KVS since we could HSM the
data, SIS the PST imports set policy's at user level folders and for us in
the UK there tech support were on the ball (answered code page problems etc;
fast), but does not use MAPI to retrieve so bad for OST's/Palms).
snip---

My company is currently looking around for an archiving solution, and KVS is
one of the ones we're looking at, along with some others. I don't have any
valuable feedback yet myself, but I'm hoping that our server guys will be
ready for some trials soon...

OK is there a tool out there that will let me say have different size
restrictions for different groups of users?

I do not want to do this on a per person basis..it took a long time to
get away from that.
I presently do the restrictions on the priv for everybody

But I do say have a group of users which could use more room on their
restrictions.

so it would be nice to say do the priv...then have a override for a group.

ideas?

Slow opening unread messages

2002-05-09 Thread Tea, Justin

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and can lead me towards the right
direction.

Outlook XP (SP1) is slow to open unread message. After it's marked as read, the speed
appears to be fine. The symptom persists when you toggle between read/unread.

This only happens with one particular mailbox. I have tried on different profile and
computer with the same result.

Thoughts? Thanks.
