RE: Exchange Redundancy
Clustering won't help you if your problem is an EDB problem. But, clustering will help you if (like your original request) you desire redundancy for the server, the Windows OS, and all processes and services running on that server. If you have problems with services stopping, Dr. Watson or Blue Screens or even intermittent hardware failures, the passive server will fail over and start your virtual Exchange server on the other hardware. We don't have many problems at all with Exchange or hardware, but where clustering is really advantageous is when you have to do MAINTENANCE - such as applying security hotfixes, service packs, or if you're having problems with a stuck service that requires a reboot. Trigger the servers to failover and you've got the machine to yourself. Failovers typically take about 30 seconds. During that time Outlook will appear to hang, but then (I always recommend Outlook 2002) it will reconnect to the other server and continue normally. The cluster manager will also attempt to start services when they've gone down before they failover - if that's what you want it to do. So, it's pretty flexible and does a lot for uptime and customer satisfaction. Bryan -Original Message- From: Soysal, Serdar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 11:55 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange Redundancy I didn't even want to go down that path, but you're correct. You don't need clustering if you use good quality hardware and proactive monitoring. It's not seamless, and in most cases not necessary anyway. -Original Message- From: Soysal, Serdar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 08, 2002 3:46 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Exchange Redundancy It's still called clustering. RE: Clustered Environment
Our University has about 13,000 students and 2500 faculty/staff. We run an Exchange 2000 cluster on two quad Dells (700Mhz Zeon) on the back end and two 1-U Dell web servers for OWA. CLARiiON SAN for disk storage. Active Directory is on two separate domain controllers. Students use OWA, faculty/staff use a combination of Outlook 2002 or POP3/IMAP clients while on campus, OWA off. If you follow the sizing guidelines, you may be surprised. But we checked with several other universities roughly the same size and they run comfortably with this same configuration. Clustering is great for maintenance and reliability. We don't have to wait for 4:00am Sunday morning to apply security hotfixes, etc. Bryan Schneider MN State University, Mankato -Original Message- From: Sabo, Eric [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 10:23 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Clustered Environment We are running an active/active cluster. [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, May 01, 2002 3:36 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Best way to clean up corrupt calendar folder? (on server) I had one user who could not syncronize her calendar over the air with her blackberry. The errors in the event log basically said that the CDO stuff could not access the calendar. Email was forwarding just fine. After trying all sorts of things on the blackberry server, I finally created a new mailbox (with a different username) and synced the blackberry up with that (the calendar worked fine). I then exported everything from the user's mailbox to a PST file (so I could delete the mailbox and create a new one just like it). After exporting all the mailbox contents I tried deleting everything from the calendar folder (by using view by category and deleting everything). After doing only that (i.e. not yet creating a new mailbox) the blackberry still would not sync with the calendar (over the air). The calendar appeared completely empty from an outlook 2000 client. When I tried via OWA there was an appointment still showing up in the calendar (yikes). After deleting the mailbox and creating a new one with the same alias and email address, the old data was imported from the PST and the blackberry syncs up fine now. My only question was if there was some better way of fixing the calendar short of what I did. I had tried all of the /cleanfreebusy /cleanreminder /cleanshedplus options in outlook with no improvement. RE: Forests prep domain prep
Well, whadja go deleting the GAL for before you even knew whether E2k worked? Anyway, I'm gonna assume everything's fine, because you gave another clue. Those queries you're using can't be based upon OU. The results in your address list creator may show them, but it won't work. Create groups to mirror your OU's and base the query on that group's membership. And you can't say group membership / begins with / whatever or the corresponding LDAP query, you have to do group membership / is exactly / cn=whatever,ou=whatever,dc=whatever,dc=com Try that. -Original Message- From: matt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Posted At: Thursday, May 09, 2002 01:05 PM Posted To: MSExchange Mailing List Conversation: Forests prep domain prep Subject: RE: Forests prep domain prep OK, here's what I'm trying to do. POP3 Authentication using SASL
Looking for help using Outlook Express (POP3 or IMAP) and checking the box Log on using Secure Password Authentication on the servers tab. This doesn't work and you get Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'webmail.mail.com, Server: 'webmail.mnsu.edu', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F Now we have and SSL certificate installed on the OWA box and setup for POP3 and IMAP. In fact, on Outlook Express I can unselect Log on using Secure Password Authentication and on the advanced tab select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and this works fine. The password and the entire session is encrypted - even the userid/password authentication. The issue is with only encrypting the Authentication portion since in the wizard for setting up the mail account the check box is there for Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) and this is what most people will check by default. This wants to use SASL over port 110, but once again, this authentication gets rejected. Can anyone help? smtp - UDP, TCP, or IP?
Hi Just averted a nasty disaster and I had a question, forgive my noobness as I'm not a router guy but they are trying to make me one. Last night we had a cisco guy come in and tighten down one of our routers that borders our firewall. We had to delete all our access lists and recreate them as such we had to create permits for all the various ports. As part of our access statement we used tcp permit for 110 and 25. Well it turned out that by doing this mail came in but didn't go out. I started to think about it and with some of the IP stuff ive been reading about I thought maybe smtp isn't part of tcp and maybe its part of udp. Well from what I am told a statement of ip permit should cover it wherever smtp may fall. In this case it did, the new permit did work. My question is, where does smtp fall? Should I have used a udp permit statement instead? e- _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

On Thu, 9 May 2002, at 6:35pm, Hansen, Eric wrote: As part of our access statement we used tcp permit for 110 and 25. Well it turned out that by doing this mail came in but didn't go out. SMTP is TCP port 25. SMTP does not use UDP, not is it an IP-layer protocol. Make sure you have all the rules, and in all directions. Maybe you are accidentally blocking outbound TCP SYN packets on port 25? Also, if your default policy is to drop without reply, make sure you at least send a TCP RST for connect attempts to TCP port 113, which is the auth protocol (also called ident). Many SMTP mail exchangers will do an auth query, and if you just drop those packets on the floor, they may time out or reject you. If all else fails, use a packet sniffer to see what is going over the wire. -- Ben Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization. I simply asked if the situation I described was in fact the situation he was experiencing as I was unclear from his response as to what the actual situation was at the moment. If you aren't happy with the method of inquiry and responses I use in eliciting additional information and providing direction to those who pose queries I offer several suggestions: 1. Ignore my posts. 2. Answer the questions instead and I'll endeavor to learn from your example. 3. Hi All, I am having a problem with ADC connection agreement, I think, here. There is no option to move mailbox under exchange tasks for users after initial replication, after creating a connection agreement. Here is my situation: -1 NT domain and 1 Win 2k domain (2 win2k sp2 server- dc) -performed Netdiag-on DC and member server -performed dcdiag- on DC and member server -Installed ADC on DC (also global catalog server) -Forestprep - on DC -Domainprep - on DC -Setup ADC with one way connection agreement(did not allow two way agreement-due to 2 domains?) -install E2k Sp2 on member server, applied available hot fix. - install ESM on DC ( technet suggested to install ESM on the machine from where you are trying to move mailbox) I did not use ADMT because the users were already created manually by my Network Admin. earlier (not inside the users container but created another container on the same level as users). Therefore I pointed to the same container in the connection agreement also(CA properties--from exchange). The only available tasks are Delete Email addresses and enable IM in Exchange task wizard. Is it necessary to use ADMT ? What am I missing here? Any help would be really appreciated. RE: KVS Enterprise Vault
Hi Ken, I asked a similar question last week, and Paul Hurst had sent this reply: snip--- I found that 'Archive one' would have required at least some PF servers unless you want one with 200Gb+ PF store, eCon did not SIS the PST's when migrated back in and was heavy on the install with two CD's and lots of install options (Oracle/SQL etc;) also their pre-sales tech support was very light, but does support UNIX back end servers and uses MAPI to retrieve the messages (good for OST's/Palms). We went for KVS since we could HSM the data, SIS the PST imports set policy's at user level folders and for us in the UK there tech support were on the ball (answered code page problems etc; fast), but does not use MAPI to retrieve so bad for OST's/Palms). snip--- My company is currently looking around for an archiving solution, and KVS is one of the ones we're looking at, along with some others. I don't have any valuable feedback yet myself, but I'm hoping that our server guys will be ready for some trials soon... -Christian -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Jasa, Ken Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 9:56 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: KVS Enterprise Vault Has anyone used this product that could provide some feedback on it? ADC as Inter-Org Connector/Sync
Hi all, I'm looking to learn what features are supported/not supported when you use the ADC to connect 2 Exchange 2000 Orgs. I had a difficult time finding anything detailed on the KB, so was hoping for some insight from any of you that might have set this up. create different mailbox stores for each group and then set the limits per store. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mellott, Bill Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 9:02 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Mailbox size restrictions - in groups? OK is there a tool out there that will let me say have different size restrictions for different groups of users? I do not want to do this on a per person basis..it took a long time to get away from that. I presently do the restrictions on the priv for everybody But I do say have a group of users which could use more room on their restrictions. so it would be nice to say do the priv...then have a override for a group. Slow opening unread messages
Hi, Just wondering if anyone has seen this before and can lead me towards the right direction. Outlook XP (SP1) is slow to open unread message. After it's marked as read, the speed appears to be fine. The symptom persists when you toggle between read/unread. This only happens with one particular mailbox. I have tried on different profile and computer with the same result. Thoughts? Thanks. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
