[expert] VPN problems to access university

2000-07-04 Thread Daniel Woods

Having looked into getting VPN to work from my NT at home
thru my LM7.1 firewall/IPmasq, I am annoyed !
I have read the VPN howto and linux VPN masquerade. The
former is if you want to create your own local VPN. The
latter one indicates that you must patch the source and
recompile the kernel.

I am using the Nortel Network Extranet as the VPN client
on NT, which worked before adding in my linux firewall.
This extranet supports IPsec and ISAKMP. IP masq is working.

I went to http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ip_masq_vpn.html
to get the patch, which is only 2.2.15 and saved as
ip_masq_vpn-2.2.15.patch.gz
except that it appears to not bein gzip format. Yes, I tried
winzip and gunzip/zcat while trying to do
zcat patchfile.gz | patch -l -p0 > vpn.log
I've contacted the author John Hardin on this, but has
anyone else got this working ?
Will the 2.2.15 patch be ok within my 2.2.16 kernel ?

So now I had to look into (learn) how to rebuild the
linux-2.2.16-secure.mdk kernel already installed.
How does the "secure" kernel get built ? Where is the
option or source I need to make sure it's compiled as
secure ?
I got the source and RPM (and installed) after running
MandrakeUpdate.

Thanks... Dan.

hmm, does not seem to improve on speed.
however, there's a more quantitative, simple and quick measurement of
performance...run the xpilot game which will show at start how many
frames/sec.
i tested on a400mhtz, 8m ati pci, xf 3.3.5 and got 15frames/sec.

Ok, that makes sense; which brings my next question, what would be a
simpler term for 'socket programming protocols'? What is a socket?

Do you have an emu10k1? Mandrake shipped a version of the driver for that that had
serious (and I mean SERIOUS) bugs, one that caused a major NMI error to be reported
about once a second or so (and syslog would grab it, and store it on your hard-drive).
Check your /var/log/messages for any line with NMI in it. If you find a bunch of
error
messages, there is your problem.

If not, maybe /var/log/messages will have some help anyways. ~,^

This is due to the new menu system. If you take a look at it, you'll
notice that the GNOME and KDE menus have merged for the most part,
thus obsoleting the need for two seperate menu types. The 7.1 menu
system brings the same menu to all WM's.

These RPMs were installed when I installed mdk6.0. Subsequently,
I've installed 2.2.12 & .16 from tarballs.

Will doing an "rpm -e" on these packages ruin my system by

That makes sense, although I remember sometime back dumping the /tmp
folder in either RedHat 6 or SuSE 6.3 (I don't remember which) and
having problems after that. At that point it was just easier to
reinstall, but I haven't done that since and I just chalked it up to
*nix stuff being different that way. Is it just Mandrake that puts
stuff in there? What is safe to clean up on a regular basis?

[expert] Kernel upgrade went badly--Linux is dead

2000-07-04 Thread Bruce E. Harris

I used the Mandrake 2.2.16 upgrade for my system. There was a hicup with
the install and I had to fix lilo.conf to reflect the kernel...old and new.
Well, I thought I was running 2.2.14secure in the past and 2.2.16secure
now. Wrong! My system is not setup for the secure kernel (??) and when I
added both 2.2.14secure and 2.2.16secure in lilo, I got a kernel panic
during reboot, saying there was a system/kernel mismatch. So, now I can not
start Linux at all.

I have been able to boot using an old Caldera install/boot disk (dummy me
didnot make a proper boot disk). I can access and mount my HDD, however I
can not edit lilo and solve this problem since I can not access any
editors; ed or vi.

Any idead?

TIA

Bruce

[expert] Install problems with version 7.1

2000-07-04 Thread richard waters

I had/have a problem with the install of 7.1

I downloaded and burned the 2 disks. I created the cdrom.img bootdisk on a
floppy.

During boot up if I tried to use my scsi CD-Rom drive with the install CD, the
install failed with a warning that the CD rom could not be initialized. Also
the scan of the SCSI controllers failed for the parallel port zip drive.

When I rebooted and put the install CD in my IDE CD-RW the install worked fine.
Rather than upgrade from 7.0 I did a full install (including reformatting my
drive).

CDrecord (scanbus) shows the two CD drive. XCDRoast finds them (it shows the
IDE drive under the scsi devices and the IDE devices. I assume this is due to
scsi emulation. ) However when I click on the icons on the KDE desktop for CDrom
or CDrom2, I get KFM errors.

I tried ls and got the following:
ls -l /dev/cdrom2
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root4 Jun 10 17:28 /dev/cdrom2 -> scd0
ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root4 Jun 10 17:28 /dev/cdrom -> scd0

I think the install got confused by the two drives and did some bad linking.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

RE: [expert] 2.2.17 kernel on Mandrake 7.0--safe?

2000-07-04 Thread Russell \"Elik\" Rademacher

Just out of curiousity if we are not using the Desktop version...but
using it as server setup, where can I locate this new updated RPM of this
kernel? I am thinking of upgrading it to this version for my 9 Linux
Servers that is deployed so far.

If you are wondering... I enjoyed working with those and they are pretty
solid so far. As for being solid...the system is currently running 4382
domains on average on each server, with the last three being as Email and
MySQL/Postgres Databases. Soand in light of the security bugs that is
found in the current kernel, I would like to grab the latest version and

I've installed the 2.2.17mdk kernel from the Mandrake cooker, and the
only complaint I have (so far) is that the boot-up screen switches at
mid-point to an SVGA mode to display the Mandrake logo at the top. I
can do without the logo as I know what I'm installing, and, in fact,
it doesn't work properly on my system anyway, displaying only a
"ghost" image. How do I disable this in favor of the standard boot-up
screen so I can concrentrate on what I'm reading? Thank you.

Has anyone had any problems adding new themes to sawfish after
installing helixgnome?

I cannot do this now.. I'm baffled. The permissions of the files I
wanted to try were different, so I changed them
to be like all of the others. No luck. The themes show up in the
sawfish selection but simply, do nothing..

I'm at a loss.. If anyone has ran across this, I would appreciate
hearing from you..

Cooker is for BETA. The rpm checked out is the one at
MandrakeUpdate (accessible from the star icon on the desktop).
It is 2.2.16-xmdk

And yes, at least one of the 2.2.17 modules is under test and
definitely beta until Chmouel tells us otherwise.

Hi,

I have never upgraded a kernel using a RPM, always used soruce in the past. But
I wonder if Mandrake does something special to the kernel to make a Mandrake
specific RPM kernel worth it? In light of this, is the RPM under cooker 2.2.17
a safe bet for Mandrake 7.0? I now have two reasons to upgrade my kernel, so
guess I will take the plunge.

Actually they are temporary sockets (files), but they are more persistent
than other temporary files so /var/tmp would have been a better
location. /root/tmp seems quite illogical.

[expert] old sound modules for M6VCX chipset

2000-07-04 Thread Hubert Nachbaur

Hi,

I bought a new computer and the motherboard is a M7MKE from biostar.
The chipset is M6VCX.
I was very surprised when I saw modules for the Linux kernel on the
CD, _but_ they are only for Redhat 6.0/6.1 and Caldera 2.?. I'm not
able to get them working on my fresh 7.1 installation, they have
wrong dependencies. It seems that they are not in the Kernel 2.2.15
and so I'm not able to hear any sounds, no other soundmodule works.
On the homepage of biostar there are no driver updates and so I want
to ask on this list, if anybody has a similiar motherboard _and_
sound.

Doesn't matter, actually, The onyl problem is Windoze over-rights the
boot-loader, so you have to boot from a disk after installing Windoze to
reinstall the boot-loader.

Ok, for starts, I'd move the installation files off a 3 GB partition.. that's
kindof a waste... put them on the Windoze partition if you have room. If
not, make a smaller partition for them (a CD holds 650 MB, so 700 should be
fine)

Now, delete ALL the partition on your drive EXCEPT the Windoze paritition and
the installation partition (if you're using it). Then, the install program
will let you create partitions using Linux FDISK, which is a much better way
of doing things.

Also, I'd really suggest buying a CD. Goto www.cheapbytes.com, you can order
CD's for 1.99 (for MDK 7.0) and 3.99 (for MDK 7.1), plus s&h. The CD is a
lot easier to handle, and wont get erased if Windoze thrashes your hard-drive
like mine keeps doing... (thank the Gods Linux has its own hard-drive on my
machine...)

>
> please help me divide this 8 GB hard disk ... thank you ...

Basically, I'd keep your 3 GB Windoze partition, make a 10 MB boot partition
(if you can't get this within the first 1024 cylinders of your hard-drive, it
won't be useful anyways, so skip that). I'd then give a third of what's left
to /home, and the rest to /. Then again, that may not work out too well,
since I'm used to having much larger hard-drives and I have about 12 Linux
partitions for one installation. Maybe someone else can help with this...
But what I said tends to give good results to others. Correct me if I'm
wrong, but Mandrake 7.0 should have an option to automatically setup
partitions on your drive that work well. I'm not sure how that works,
though, since I hand-create my partitions with FDISK.

Yes, but i wanna have dual boot ... windoze and linux i'd have to
install windoze before linux to make it easier for me, right ?

ok ... my single hard disk which is 8 GB is partitioned into three ... i'd
like hda1 (C:) to contain windoze; hda2 (D:) to contain all of the Linux

Depends. What partitions did you make using Windoze FDISK? You didn't try to
make the Linux partition with it, did you? My suggestion would be to delete
any non Windoze partitions, and using the Mandrake install program to create
them. Besides, you're going to want more than one partition for Linux
anyways. You're going to want a swap space (it's much faster having the
dedicated partition than using the swap-files), and probably a boot partition
as far up the front of the drive as possible, since the version of LILO shipper
with MDK 7.0 (and 7.1) has the 1024 sector limit... which means you'd have to
use a boot disk if you don't have the kernel stuck up 1024 or less to the front
of the hard-drive. The latest version of LILO doesn't have that problem,
however, so if you download it you can avoid the need for a boot partition (and
boot disk).

Anyways, as to the hanging up, I would say it's possible, but unlikely it'd
freeze where you said it was. You might also want to check the motherboards
and see if they are Linux compatible (some motherboards are really weird and
thus no drivers work with them yet). But I'd try the partitioning thing
first. Just delete any Linux partitions you made with Windoze and recreate
them with the MDK installer, if it lets you

Hello ...

I'm a newbie with LINUX and I was installing MDK 7.0 on my desktop
computer but the installation hangs up after the message: "Loading Second
RAM Disk ..." just before the GUI installation of Mandrake ...

Here are the specs of the computer:

Pentium III - 550e
32 MB RAM
 8 GB with 3 partitions:
hda1 - (2 GB) contains Windoze 98
hda2 - (3 GB) supposed to contain the MDK LINUX after-install
hda3 - (3 GB) contains the MDK LINUX 7.0 installer ... I am
only installing via Hard Disk and not CD ROM ...

Is there a problem with my FDISK (Windoze version) partitioning ??
Should I follow the 1024 cylinder thing for the LILO ... is that why it
hangs-up ?? Or must the Windoze and Linux be on physically separate hard
disks ??

DrakConf -> Network Conf -> Client Tasks near/at bottom.
I actually have 2 PPP options

You can DrakConf -> linuxconf -> Control files -> configure modules
to activate/deactivate modules like PPP

Note: For some reason the graphical linuxconf/netconf isn't
installed by default, you need to install the linuxconf-gnome rpm to
get the much more usable graphical interface.

Everything you need is there and has been tested by me with Mandrake

As I tell my users when they call me to their stations with a
non-working password (capslock), "I do this to myself all the
time, that's why I always check it first."

Re: [expert] KPPP problems with Mandrake 7.1

2000-07-04 Thread Jon Hewitt

I guess I better hang my head in shame :(

I added 'noauth' to the ppp arguments in KPPP and everything works fine now. I
seen this fix several times in this list but the people describing their
problems didn't seem to fit the problem I was having, so I never checked it out.

Works like a champ now.. :-) Gad I feel dumb.

[expert] 7.1 Gnome with KDE menus

2000-07-04 Thread Robert Fox

I previously had 7.02 installed with Helix Gnome and Enlightenment 0.16
installed - and I got KDE menus in the Gnome menu.

Now with 7.1 and Gnome, I see a checkbox to show KDE but noting shows up
(even when I switched to KDE and then back to Gnome)

Any hints?

Thx,
Robert Fox

[expert] 7.1 install on HP and IBM Thinkpad

2000-07-04 Thread Turgut Kalfaoglu

This HP has an IDE CD-ROM (Creative Infra 52) , and during install, it
asked for the 'Ext' CD, but did not eject the install CD..
The button of the CD drive was also inoperative.

I had to hit CANCEL, and it did not create many of the icons, did not
install some stuff from the install CD, even..

Likewise, on IBM Thinkpad, same thing - did not eject the install CD,
the button was inoperative. I used the manual 'hole' on the cd drive
to eject the CD, inserted the ext CD, but installation froze..

[expert] Installing rpm binaries of kde2?

2000-07-04 Thread Phil

Hi everyone
I thought I would give kde2 a try on my Mandrake 7.1
I downloaded all the rpm,s except the kde-qt-addons which was missing
fromt he ftp site, but I found out that its contents were in
kdesupport2.

When I get to install kde-libs2 next I get a dependancy error
Missing qt2 ( I need to upgrade to qt-2.1.1 I have qt-2.1)
failed on libcrypto.so.0
failed on libssl.so.0

So as I dont appear to have any of these on my system so i cant run the
nodeps option can someone please tell me where to find these three items

Thanks

The /tmp directory (and others located around the system) are indeed for
temporaty files. Well behaved programs should remove their own temporary
files, but they don't all do so, and if a program crashes it can leave its
temporary files behind.

You can delete only the files you have permission to delete, which is to
say only the files you made or which have been set to allow other users to
delete. Unix security again. Root can delete anything anywhere, one of
many reasons not to use the root account for day-to-day stuff.

This should do it. No warranties expressed or implied; yer on yer own,
though.

1) Tar/b2zip, etc, the /home directory and back it up as appropriate. Test
the integrity of your archive to be sure you can recover it.

2) Delete the contents of the directory (rm -r /home/*).

3) Prepare the new partition as needed.

4) Create a mount in fstab. Be sure to make it auto so it is mounted at
boot time. Something like:

/dev/sda8 /home ext2defaults1 2

5) Mount the new partition: "mount /home".

6) Unpack the backed up home directory into the directory.

Did you configure a local network?
I had this problem and found the default route setting messed up kppp
I always received the pppd daemon died message
Disable all other networks then try. Slowy add the other networks after getting
dial up working
