[expert] Recommendations.

2000-11-05 Thread Dom Savage

Hi Guys,
Could do with some recommendations. Trying to resurrect an old machine
here and put it to some practical use as a print/email server. I've just
put in a new un-partitioned/formatted 20 gig drive, and thought for once,
I'd try and put the partitions in the right order! The problem is, the
machine's bios is from 96 so wont go over 8gig, and ideally I want to put
on a small partition (bout 4 gig) for Winbloze 95, just for compatability
sakes (and other people in the house who aren't up to speed with linux) as
some of the hardware in machine lacks drivers under linux.
So, what's the general concensus these days? I probably still want to put
a /boot in under 1024, and will use lilo for dual booting when it's
necessary. So, format and partition under W95 first, or start an
install for MDK 7.2 and use Partition Magic? Should I really update the
bios...?
Any help, gratefully received
Regards
Dom Savage

You neglect to assure us that the downloaded iso images matched their

If the md5sums do not match, you do not have to re-download another
680 MB. Just use rsync to patch the errors out, which it will do if
the name matches and the size or timestamp do not.

Ron,

I think the problem was in the burning stage -- not quite sure why (4
coasters made so far). The md5sum checks out (using BeOS for md5sum/
cdrecord). Until I get a Linux distribution working on this machine I am
unable to use rsync as there is no BeOS version at this time.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

[expert] Bug in Tetex / terminfo

2000-11-05 Thread Joerg Mertin

Hi Folks,

while trying to fine-tune the tetex environement, I noticed that texconfig
couldn't find the linux-termcap entries. This is due to the fact that
/usr/lib/terminfo has moved to /usr/share/terminfo.

2 Ways of fixing this. Or you symlink the /usr/share/terminfo directory to
the /usr/lib directory, or you edit the texconfig script and adapt the Path.

Just wanted to share this with you folks :)

When I delete the contents of the ~/Mail Directory, or reduce drastically
the size of the Mail/* folders, it displays again.

I tend to use kmail and mutt (kmail under X/KDE, mutt while remotely
logged in). The Mail-Directory is nfs-mounted from my Server running

Well, for one thing, W95 only (did I say "only"?) supports 2 GB
partitions, as it uses FAT 16, not FAT32. Unless there is a driver and
format utility for it I don't know about.

You may not need to upgrade the BIOS. Try this process and see what
happens.

If you are planning to use it as a print and mail server, then 1) 20 GB is
overkill by an order of magnitude, and 2) why W95 other than just to dink
around with? If you are using it as a W95 box, it can't very will function
as a mail server.

That said, I'd build a primary partition of 2 GB with Mess-DOS' fdisk,
format that and install W95. Then I'd use a recent Linux distribution like
the latest tomsrtbt to build three extended partitions, one of them fairly
samll, the other two of roughly 1/2 of the rest of the drive each.

Then I'm make at least 2, maybe three 30 MB partitions for booting. Why 3?
That way I can have three active Linux installations: my current one, the
one to which I am migrating, and the old one from which I recently
migrated. I'd build a nice big /home partition and maybe another for mail
spooling.

I'd make an over-sized swap partition, knowing full well that I can set
the swap area within that partition with mkswap. I'd try to get the swap
partition more or less in the middle of the hard drive to minimize head
travel at swap time.

Then I'd install a recent Linux disty on that.

I'd leave the rest of the hard drive alone untill I needed to make new
root partitions for future Linux disties or other purposes.

Then, before I did ANYTHING else, I'd go out and buy myself a good backup
tape drive, like the HP DDS4 drive, and start building myself a bare metal
restore zip disk and set of scripts. Or I'd get BRU and use the OBDR
feature of the HP drive. I'd test that stuff thoroughly before I had
anthing more invested in that hard drive than the installations.

[expert] 7.2 doesn't boot after install on Abit BP6

I have the dual celeron motherboard from Abit, the BP6, with a matrox

I burned 7.2 disks 1 and 2 and checked the md5sums. I elected to erase my
current hard drive entirely, and have the recommended install.

The install works fine. But after it's finished and I try to boot, I can see
the left column on the new boot screen, but everything to the right of that
is blacked out, and the boot sequence doesn't go any farther.

Anyone know what's going on?

Under Linux you can do a:

verify integrity against the original md5sum on the server.

FWIW, CD-RWs are better than CD-R devices - no coasters, just blank

On bootinto to linux Mandrake 7.2 however, the boot stops immediately after

  Robert,

Do not confuse POP-3 with SMTP. POP-3 is a way to RETRIEVE mail only.
When you send mail, you utilize SMTP. It sounds like the most likely
explanation is independent of all of the above though. Either your SMTP
options in your E-mail program are incorrect (i.e.: an invalid
 SMTP host)
 or
the DNS server (that the SMTP server you connect to to send
 mail) can not
correctly resolve the domain of your mail host that is the
 final delivery
  point.

The (traveling) life of an E-mail
  -
Sender's mail client sends mail (SMTP) to it's listed SMTP host.
The SMTP host then decides if the user is local:
  Yes, Skip to Drop step
  No, Pass mail on
Pass mail onto server that holds the desired recipient (again utilizing
 SMTP)
  Drop mail into recipient's mailbox
  Recipient checks for mail (POP-3)
  -

As for on-demand POP-3, that is controlled by the inetd daemon. When a
request to the POP-3 port is received, inetd calls the POP-3 server
 program
which then processes the actual request (to retrieve user's mail). The
 same
goes for IMAP if you choose to *retrieve* your mail that way.

Summary: your POP-3 settings on your server should not have anything to
 do
with your server's ability to receive mail. Look either at your sending
  e-mail program's SMTP setting and/or check that your server's
 DNS entry is
  current and correct.

  Enjoy,

[expert] US Dvorak keyboard missing from KDE keyboard selector - Where is it?

2000-11-05 Thread pnelson

I use the US Dvorak keyboard, but my wife uses QWERTY. In the past it has been
trivially easy to set up Mandrake/KDE for switching between Dvorak and US
QWERTY. But in MDK7.2 there doesn't seem to be a Dvorak selection in the
keyboard layout list. Where did it go? How can I get it back?

Dvorak is still there in the system keyboard selection, but that affects ALL
users. I want Dvorak as a selectable option when running KDE (like the old
International Keyboard Switcher application).

Any help or ideas?

Thanks,

Pascal

RE: [expert] No telnet into my 7.2 box?

2000-11-05 Thread Bill Shirley

Good point. He should get /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny setup BEFORE
he enables telnet access.

But that is not his problem right now. He said it's not listening. No
server there. If it were there he might get a connection refused.

Bill

You should also check the /etc/hosts.allow file.

You have it already in your gcc RPMs.
Simply put the following in your Makefile :

CC = gcc
CPP = gcc -E
CXX = g++
LD = gcc

[expert] What is it with libstdc++?

2000-11-05 Thread Praedor Tempus

Trying again to build mandrake kde src rpms, I run into an
annoying error. It craps out saying it can't tell if my
STL is sgi-like or like anything.

I have libstdc++-2.95.2-12mdk, libstdc++-devel-2.95.2-12mdk,
and libstdc++-compat-2.95.2-12mdk.

libstdc++ rpms are supposed to provide the proper answer:
that my stl is sgi-like. It doesn't. Why not? What is
broken here? The configure script is dying on conftest.

[expert] pppd question

2000-11-05 Thread David Boles

First - I don't really belong here. I am NOT an expert. But I do need expert
advice/answers

What is the difference between Linux-Mandrake 7.1 and its pppd files/KDE
files and the same files that come with Linux-Mandrake 7.2 isos?

I had pppd "dial on demand" working in L-M 7.1 with the information provided
in the man pppd file and some information that I found posted on the
Internet, basicly an "how I got it to work" website. The same configuration
files that worked with L-M 7.1 do not work with L-M 7.2.

I am lost on this and I will gladly answer questions about what/when etc.

I would offer more information now but i don't know what you need to know to
help me.

To keep the area clean for you "real guys" smile private email is more than
acceptable.

Thanks in advance.

2000-11-05 Thread tommiy

I just upgraded from 7.1 to 7.2 and notice that all my icons etc for gnome are
missing...these I will have to examine further but have seen others suggesting fixes
for this.

However I seem to have one problem that I haven't seen anyone complaining about. If I
start X and open a terminal (doesn't appear to matter which version) whenever I type a
letter 'R' in that window the letter doesn' make it to the terminal and it appears
that the window get focus or that the gnome desktop panel gets the focus.

The upshot is that in X I can no longer manage to type an R.

Any help available before I have to spend time looking at why would be helpful.

Re: [expert] could not open default font fixed

I've seen this problem when xfs is not running. Make sure it is up before
running X. Also check for this line

FontPath "unix/:-1"

in the /etc/X11/XF86Config that tells X to look for fonts using xfs.

If you don't have xfs installed, install it and run

/etc/init.d/xfs start

and make sure you have a

xfs -port -1 -daemon

running before starting X.

[expert] Install problem

2000-11-05 Thread Roland Hightower

I started using mandrake when 7.0 first came out. Installed easily and I loved
it. I upgraded to 7.1 when it came out. My 7.1 system works fantastic and I
also have it running on another computer in the house that acts as my email
server and proxy for this mandrake box and my wife's windows me machine.
I have run into a problem trying to upgrade to 7.2. Everything goes just fine
until it asks for the 2nd disk. I put it in and it kicks it back out when I
click on the ok button, the same thing for the 3rd and 4th disk, so I do the
install with just the 1st disk. I discovered afterwards I'm unable to access
my cdrom, I get an error saying it's locked and I don't have access to it.
This occurs as a user or as root. Cdrom2 works fine. What I'm thinking is
this drive gets locked during installation from the 1st disk and is unable to
read the subsequent disks. Why would this happen? Hardware? I've had the
same results on 2 different computers. I've tried the upgrade option and the
install option using store bought disks and disks I burned from iso's I
downloaded. Maybe I'll disconnect my cdrom and run the install from the cd-rw
drive. I'm getting tired of doing installs. I sure do like what I've seen of
7.2 and would like to get it installed so that it works properly. There just
seems to be too much missing not being able to use the other disks.

It was a stupid problem , but i solved it ...
it seems that imwheel blocks some gtk apps with its default bindings,
so i killed imwheel and all apps worked.
So if anyone has the same problems : edit the /etc/X11/imwheelrc !!
Sorry that I bothered you all ;(

Re: [expert] SMP

2000-11-05 Thread Stephen Boulet

If you're running the kernel that installed when you installed mandrake, then
it should have detected an extra processor.

If you have one processor, I don't know whether smp is installed by default.
You can always compile and install your own kernel. See the documentation for
that.

Hi,

I've a network of 2 computers. The LM system is a
configured as a router.

My eth0 is connected to the wireless gateway. The gw
supplies a private ip to the eth0 interface. Now is it
possible to serve pages thro' Apache to people on the
net?

Cheers

While attempting to install Mailman (mailing list distribution software) on my

be turned off. How do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance.

[expert] Editing files in Linux 4 Windows

2000-11-05 Thread STEVEN L HAWKS

I have installed Linux 4 Windows to dual boot with Window 98
on my PC.

When I try to boot into Linux I get:

VFS:Cannot open root device 07:07Kernel panic:VFS:Unable to mount root fs
on 07:07
After some trial and error I was able to modify the Linux.bat
file to point to the correct drive and Linux 4 Windows did load from my from
my Windows 98 desktop. However I am having problem getting my modem and
printer to work correctly. I see references to editing file in the /proc
directorybut get permission denied error even when using the root
account.
Any suggestions?
I can't get my printer and modem to work correctly. HP
DeskJet 420 (HP DeskJet 420C is listed when I try to configure through Linux
GUI)Zoom 56K PCI Faxmodem
My main reason for loading Linux 4 Windows was to learn more
about installing programs from the Linux command line. And learn about
editing Linux files. Is it possible to perform
editing of files with Linux 4 windows?

Re: [expert] Remote printing

2000-11-05 Thread Till Kamppeter

As Mandrake 7.2 has CUPS as printing system now, the things are
different:

   /var/spool/lpd is obsolete
/var/spool/cups only contains spooled jobs, no config files
/etc/printcap is generated by CUPS so thet KDE and other applications
find the
 printers

The configuration of CUPS is in the files in the /etc/cups directory.
See also the documentation of CUPS on http://localhost:631/.

For setting up an ethernet-connected printer, start "kups" choose
"Printer"/"Add"
and on the "Backend Selector" page choose the protocol of the printer:
IPP, LPD, Socket, SMB. In the case of SMB and Socket you can even scan
the network to find your printer. Check the manual of your printer to
know which protocol it uses.

Re: [expert] Install problem

2000-11-05 Thread root

Hi,

Do you have the autofs or the amd running (sometimes they are a pain in
the neck)? Maybe they are mounting the drive when you insert it. Also, is
you cdrw running with scsi emulation? Maybe you need to use another device
file other than hd*, maybe a sr0 or something. If your cd is scsi, maybe
it is installing the wrong driver for it.

Good luck,

Luis

server and proxy for this mandrake box and my wife's windows me machine.
