[expert] 9.2 and BootDisk

2003-11-19 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Forgive me if this has been discussed.

I tried it with 3 different machines, 4 different
floppies.
"A Error Occurred. mkbootdisk failed" or
"Unable to properly close mkbootdisk, No space left on
device"

My problem is that I have dualboot scenarios..with
winblows.and its boot loader HAS to remain the
default for some internal reasons. So linux is at
/dev/hda7

Usually I create a bootdisk during istall, and use it
to get back in linux, after perform a dd of the
bootsector. Is this a known problem?

_Thanks

RE: [expert] Which Mandrake to Buy?

2003-11-17 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
OK, the consesus seems to be buying Mandrake Club
membership, and most ppl prefer the download edition.
(mandrake, maybe dont spend too much time making all
those other editions...)

I am just hoping Mandrake wont drop the ball on the
downloaded edition, and stop offering updates, like
Redhat did (kind-off)...thus only supporting the "paid
for" editions.

Thanks all for the quick replies.I got my three
CD's downloaded in under 40mins over the weekend.
Suprisingly, the "chelo" site in Switzerland is
amazingly faster than all other many other mirrors I
have used located in the USI being located in the
US! Something speedy about transatlantic cables?

[expert] Which Mandrake to Buy?

2003-11-17 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
OK,

I have some money, would like to support Mandy as much
as I like using it. I am intending to upgrade an 8.2
machine (not updates for it anymore, even security,
right?), who basic function is running 2 webservers,
(virtual) and as an anonymous ftp server. The anonyftp
files are on a promisetech raid array, hooked with an
adaptec 29160 scsi card.

The download version of 8.2 worked 100% for me. Now
that i was considering purchasing the 9.2, I can see
lots of versions out therePowerpack, Pro-Suite,
Discovery, Corporate Server!!

It is not for home usebut yet don't need all the
business/selling language associated with the
versions...all I need is a Good working Mandrake 9.2,
whereby I can download updates without passwords!! as
I have always done with 8.2. Basically same "Freedom,
but not Free ($0.00)" We all understand the process
consumes money!

Which one should I go for?

[expert] PS hanging due to NFS?, Cant KILL

2003-10-28 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

I run an openmosix cluster using Mandrake, and had
problems with PS hanging or whole system for that
matter. It is still an ongoing issue for a while now,
i took it up to openmosix guys, and response is that
90% of the time its network related, the rest 10%
hardware!

Tracing down the problem today via /proc, trying to
read every cmdline for a process, it hangs on
PID=25583.
Ran strace for `ps`, hanged same location (log below)

open("/proc/25583/status", O_RDONLY)= 7
read(7, "Name:\tchange_missing\nState:\tD (d"..., 511)
= 463
close(7)
munmap(0x40013000, 4096)= 0
open("/proc/25583/cmdline", O_RDONLY) = 7

THEN:
cd'ed into /proc/25583
`ls` (look at exe output)
lrwxrwxrwx1 stuart stds 0 Oct 28 14:16
exe ->
/targus/linuxfiles/stuart/patches/ver006/exp03/.nfs000a839e0001
(deleted)

Not sure what that deleted line means, and all other
procs don't have it. However, BIGGER problem is that
this process 25583 cant be killed!! Not kill-9 or kill
-KILL that helps. Its currently owned by root.

Is there any other way to kill this sucker, other than
a reboot? Tired of rebooting every 2-3days like
windoze!

-Thanks All,
Richard

Additional Notes:
Here is my /etc/printcap file, using lpr

duplex:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/lp/errorlog:\

:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:

Where xxx == Printer IPaddress
if==Input Filter, for duplex printing purposes
sh==Supress header
af==accounting file
sd==spool directory(there are many more options)

THEN:: On windoze side, win2k, XP
Configure printer ->Remote-->Host (Linux host name
having the lpr configuration), queue name (in this
case, ==lp)

Thats itall printjobs go thru linux, and get
logged into accouting file.

Doesnt lpr do accounting, using "ac" or "af:" (dont
remember exactly) to define accouting file?

I think it does...or maybe something within samba for
samba printing.

My windoze boxes all print using "remote printer"
which is actually a networked printer thru Unix.

Re: [expert] OT Verizon dsl

2003-10-27 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
NopesNo problem with verizon-dsl. I use the "adsl"
package for connecting (it requires username &
password).

Cool thing is that i have an internal network (home of
about 4 nodes, windoze, gatewaty is Mandrake), when no
one is using the network, it kind of goes to
sleepand the moment someone fires up a browser, it
will auto-connect. Its been running on this OLd
Pentium 90Mhzwith 16Mb RAM, running 8.2 for over 2
yrs nowpower failures? I comes right up. I even
moved, left it with the college kids in the same
apartment, some don't even know whats running their
network!!

Recently tried to install 9.1, no go...i guess the
hardware is t old.

[expert] Upgrade Path from 8.2

2003-10-23 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

I have a solid/stable 8.2 box working as a webserver.
Since 8.2 is no longer supported, I imagine i have no
choice but to upgrade (not that savvy to make my own
update rpm's!)
I want to throw 9.1 in there. Do i have to go in
steps, 8.2 -->9.0 -->9.1 or simply throw 9.1 cd's and
install (live or from bootcd?).
Is it workable or I should simply go thru a
Complete-re-install?

_Thanks

Awww, it is a 900GB filesystem. Oh well, users, this
FS is out of bounds for at least 24hrs!
The corruption seemed to be on only one directory
tree

[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ls -li *6345*

So file with inode 18546 only shows up when listed
explicitly. I could not rm/mv it either, claims no
such file or directory, though i was able to "cp" it!!
Strange!

You might want to consider using a

[expert] reiserfs Corruption...some advice

2003-10-20 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi All,

Before i go ahead blindly with information from
reiserfsck, i thought i should post up here.
Corruption after a disk hiccup on an IDE-RAID drive.

-reiserfsck suggests running rebuild-tree
-I have already backed up the drive as is.
Should I continue? (Any bad experiences??)

 reiserfsck --check /dev/sda1
reiserfsck, 2002 - reiserfsprogs 3.6.3Will read-only
check consistency of the filesystem on /dev/sda1
Will put log info to 'stdout'

Do you want to run this program?[N/Yes] (note need to

[expert] Files not Showing up with "ls"

2003-10-17 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Mandy 9.0, reiserfs 3.6.3 on a Raid5 partition.

First, i try to transfer files 8 files from remote
host, using either sftp, scp or ftp. File listing
there::

total 79984
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus 3317856 Oct 17 07:08
s_01_6345.subrun.2d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus37602368 Oct 17 07:08
s_01_6345.subrun.3d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1772 Oct 17 07:07
s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1567 Oct 17 07:07
s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus 3317856 Oct 17 07:52
p_02_6345.subrun.2d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus37602368 Oct 17 07:52
p_02_6345.subrun.3d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1772 Oct 17 07:52
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.2d
-rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1567 Oct 17 07:52
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

It shows all files transfered. Then i do a listing on
the local system (my mandy box). Only four show up!!

[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll *6345*
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17 09:30
s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:30
s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user 3317856 Oct 17 09:30
p_02_6345.subrun.2d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17 09:31
p_02_6345.subrun.3d

Then listing by inode::

[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -i *6345*
  18541 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17
09:43 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d
  18542 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17
09:43 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
  18543 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user 3317856 Oct 17
09:43 p_02_6345.subrun.2d
  18544 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17
09:43 p_02_6345.subrun.3d

And then, individual listing of one of the missing
files, by name, (Its there, it shows up then!!)::

[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -li|grep 18546
[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
-rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:38
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

AND with inode to make sure it is there::
[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -li|grep 18546

[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -i p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
  18546 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17
09:38 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d

YEs, it is there, but not showing up otherwise, unless
explicitly called.
So then, i copy it to another filename, it works.

I try a move::
[EMAIL PROTECTED]>mv p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d
p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad
mv: cannot move `p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d` to
`p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad`: No such file or
directory

Wow.seems like some corruption in here. It is a
850GB filesystemI hope I dont have to
backup/reformat and restore the whole thing!!
Any other suggestions? (Havent ran reiserfsck yet,
still mounted!)

_Thanks

Richard

I came across this yesterday (

unfortunately cant find more info on it than the 1

How does it compare/contrast with, say OpenMosix or
Beowulf, and the like.

Anyone knows anything about this product, or more
resource to it?

Re: [expert] Re: All I want to do is FTP

2003-10-08 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
http://rpmfind.net in most cases will have your rpm.

But you better update your package lists, perform a
"urpmi.update -a"

If you dont have additional sources created for
getting packages, check out easy urpmi at
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php

This will create a command line to copy-n-paste that
will give additional sources for rpm packages. In my
opinion, "urpmi proftpd" should be working if u have
enough sources setup.

_Thanks

[expert] icewm & exceed

2003-10-07 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
I have problems with icewm
I log in fine via exceed, only thing is there is no
background!, only default fuzzy black-dotted screen of
exceed. I am loggin in remotely, and I am on mdk9.0
On my other machine, where i log in locally (9.1mdk),
it is all fine. I can use any theme i want (prefer
xp), and the color is OK.

With 9.0, loggin in remotely, regardless of them, i do
not get a background coloronly the task bar
changes when i change theme.

Any ideas?

I have been a big kde user...but after todays
discussion, decided to jump into icewm. I like the way
it loads so quickly, if only i could get it to look
nice...

_thanks

Greetings,

I have xdmcp running on my mandy 9.0, and using exceed

if so, where can I allow both ips to be utilized?

i.e. I can only login via xdmcp onto NIC1, NIC2 is not
broadcasted.

[expert] openssh-3.7p1 & Mandy 9.0

2003-09-23 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Hi ALL,

I have a problem with openssh-3.7p1 working on Mandy.
It compiles fine, and I perform an install (on
/opt/openssh-3.7p1).
I can start it fine (link it up to /etc/init.d/..blah
blah), so "service ssh restart" starts it OK.
Problem is that then no-one can log in. Keeps
complaining about bad passwd!! I have openssh-3.6p1
(compiled version) working OK, and I can log in with
it, using same password.

My problem is that I HAVE to use the latest and
greatest out there, and YES, i know Mandrake has
released an rpm patch for 3.6p1. But, with our
internal scan, anything running a version identified
as vulnerable, even if patched, is flagged. So i have
always used locally compiled versions of ssh. Anyone
else gone past this problem?

Longing for a response/idea/suggestion/recommendation
only on getting openssh-3.7p1 to work.

_Thanks

Richard.

Re: [expert] Complete system backup

2003-08-19 Thread Ricardo (Tru64 User)
Wow,

Can go with mindi/mondo (urpmi mind) would take care
of it.

Or, in my case, buy a cheapo drive $30.00 gives u 40Gb
nowadays, and
tar cf /dev/hdb/root.tar /
for i in /usr /var /opt /home /whateverfilesystem
do
tar cf /mnt/hdb/$i $i
done

So if hda dies, all u do is replace it, and boot with
install disk, rescue mode, create ur new filesystems,
and restore from backup drive only the files/directory
into new location.
then run lilo -r /mnt/hdb/
reboot with new drive.

Works everytime for me.

I even clone systems this way (primitive, but works!)
Thanks

Hey, No technical detailsjust confessions::
I have over 11TB sitting on Reiserfs and, I have not

Extremely quick recovereis too just incase of host

NFS'ed without any problem. My root also sits on
reiserfs!, and works fine with Lilo.
Lots of tools.such as:

/sbin/reiserfstune
/sbin/reiserfsck
/sbin/fsck.reiserfs
/sbin/debugreiserfs
/sbin/resize_reiserfs
/sbin/mkreiserfs

I have not however tried any of the other onesam

Re: [expert] Comcast & Routing

2003-08-04 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

I believe the two PCs are on an internal networkso
they should be getting LAN speed. There is no way that
the transfer is going all the way to the internet and
back to the other PC unless you have 2 public IP
addresses, which i believe is not the case with
comcast. The two PC's should have 2 internal,
non-routable IP addresses (192.168.x.x) or (10.0.x.x)

[expert] Making Mandrake RPM's

2003-08-01 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,
I had a post here few days ago about RPM agonyand
was educated that it was because i was not using
Manrake specs but rather Redhat.

Now, I am in dare need to make proftpd-1.2.8 rpms for
mandrake. The current available rpm, 1.2.5 does not
have large file support. It started support large
files in version 1.2.6

http://freshmeat.net/releases/89605/

If procedure is not rpm -tb proftpd-1.2.8.tar.gz, then
how else is it to use Mandrake specs?

_Thanks in advance.

Re: [expert] I Hate RPM's!!

2003-07-29 Thread Tru64 User
Thanks Vincent for all the education. I knew that was
the best way to get the info out of someone
This was all done on a a test system.so nothing is
really lost so far.

It makes perfect sense from your explanation that the
RPM's I was trying to install are for RH.

In the future, how does one make rpm's for mandrake
then? Say, I want "openssl version" to show me 0.9.7b
so that i dont get flagged by some scanners looking at
responses version command?
I was trying to update openssl to stop myself from
getting "flagged" for having a vulnerable system based
on a version # only. [eg. sendmail 8.12.6 is patched
on Mandrake, BUT, i had to upgrade for 8.12.9 for the
same reason!, since scanners would flag 8.12.6 as
vulnerable].

Also, after changing the links in /usr/lib to point to
newer /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7, then ran ldconfig,
it did reset them to original config! (ie. pointing
back to 0.9.6). Can you educate me on that too? Readin
"man ldconfig" has not shaded a light yet!

Good thing i have not touched any actual hosts being
used. BUT, how then can I ran openssl-0.9.7b on the
them (using rpm)?

_Thanks much

Richard

[expert] I Hate RPM's!!

2003-07-29 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

i checked my openssl, it was version 0.9.6x
(vulnerable)
MandrakeUpdate, does not offer its upgrade via
security updates.

OK. So? Download openssl-0.9.7b (No rpm available)
OK. Make one of my own (rpm -tb .tar.gz), Fine.

Try installing (complains about conflicting stuff!)
rpm -e openssl-0.9.6* ;libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.4mdk is
needed by a bunch of stuff.
So, I used rpm -i --force openssl-0.9.7b-.

OK, Good. But libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.4mdk was not
overwritten! So? manually adjusted link for
libssl.so.0 to point to libssl.so.0.9.7 instead of
libssl.so.0.9.6, and likewise for libcrypto.so.0

OK. Good. Openssl upgraded.

#ssh otherhost;
OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 90607f, you
have 90702f

Arrrggg.i will have to built my own ssh then,
no rpm for 3.6p1 available. Try building my own:
rpm -tb openssh-3.6p1.tar.gz
error: x11-askpass missing.

Duh!! Downloaded that from some site:
one more try: error: failed build dependencies:
XFree86-imake is needed by openssh-3.6p1-2

Can't locate XFree86-imake rpm!!
Gave up making openssh rpm, I will perform manual
install:
./configure --with-tcp-wrapper
Error; libwrap not found (I have tcp-wrapper rpm
installed though!!)
Google for libwrap library, found an rpm for it:
rpm -ivh libwrap-7.6.30.i386.rpm ; Error:error: failed
dependencies:
 tcp_wrappers < 7.6-28 conflicts with libwrap-7.6-30

So, now I have to uninstall tcp_wrappers to install
libwrap
(If you are still reading, do you even remember the
original problem?)

Why are things this complicated

_Thanks

Richard

[expert] Avoiding NFS clients Hang when NFS server dies

2003-07-23 Thread Tru64 User
Hi All,

My Unix boxes are heavy crossmounters of disks served
mainly by Mandy Linux, + mandy-mandy mounts.

Problem is that if any one host goes down, all other
hosts hang with a df. Additionally, other programs
that utilize "df" (eg. our backups, ssh --when it
tries to generate random seed runs a number of
commands, including df) hang as well.

I have read and implemented two "thought" solutions:

1. mounting inside a dir i.e.
mount -t nfs HOSTA:/dirAAA /HOSTA/dirAAA
instead of:
mount -t nfs HOSTA:/dirAAA /dirAAA
It is not suggested to mount nfs dirs under root.

2.Using the "soft" option for mounting (default=hard).

None of these are a cure. Any additional suggestions
out there?

_Thanks

Richard

[expert] tar backups Fail on Restore

2003-07-18 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

I have had 3 instances now (ALL failures) whereby I
tried to restored Linux Backups done with tar.
Steps I took:

#Backup for Root file system::
tar cvfl /my/backup/place/root.tar /
#Backup for other file systems
for i in /usr /var /opt /home
do
tar cvfl /my/backup/place/`basename`$i.tar $i
done

This works fine, backing up to a 1TB Raid disk
attached via SCSI.
Then I switch the disk (exactly similar disk) on the
host machine, boot with an install disk, "rescue"
mode.

I mount my partitions under /mnt, including the /sda1
drive.

Utilize tar xvf to restore...all partition, root goes
to hda1, /usr goes to hda6, just like the original
disk.

Then try to boot!

Missing::
Cannot find tonnes of modules, /var/wtmp, and gets
stuck completely at starting system logger!
Cant go further than that.

Where can i be going wrong? I thought i performed a
FULL system backup by Filesystem, why should I have
stuff missing then?

Any help, clues, will be highly appreciated.

[expert] SUMMARY: [Part II] Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.26 (urpmi, security)

2003-07-10 Thread Tru64 User
I got this to work by downloading all the files (from
advx.org) into a local file, call it l_updates.
Then
"urpmi.addmedia l_updates file://home/user/l_updates"

After than, installed 1.3.27 like this::
"urpmi --autoselect --media l_update"
This installed all the stuff on the l_updates
directory.

Why isnt 1.3.27 listed in any of the update sources? i
use secsup.org, and tried to all updates using:

Any reason why 1.3.27 of ExtranetServer is not part of

I need to upgrade my apache to probably 1.3.27

1. Where can i find ExtranetServer? Cannot locate it
on apache.org at all..what branch of apache is
extranetServer?

2. Is there a way to build a new apache with the
current configuration?
I build one from scratch, but it keeps complaining
about lots of modules, even though i compiled with
options
--enable-module=most
--enable-shared=max

I need the newly built httpd to be able to use current
httpd.conf without much in terms of changes.
Any easy way out?

SUMMARY/SOLUTION: [expert] Kernel Log filling up to quickly

2003-06-25 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

No, it was not shorewall. I have known shorewall to be
a problem too, yes. But in this case, shorewall was
not even installed.

Found problem was with one of my iptables firewall
rules. "-A drop-and-log-it -j LOG --log-level 6" that
was causing the problem.I changed this chain to simply
"-A drop-and-log-it -j DROP"

_Thanks J.P for your response.

Under 9.0, using xdm, my personal notes indicate::

!DisplayManager.requestPort:

/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
[xdmcp] change to enable

Re: [expert] Mail address masquerading

2003-06-24 Thread Tru64 User
Sendmail::

Most sites use the Sendmail "MASQUERADE_AS" feature to
hide the
host names on outgoing email. In other words, email
would leave
your machine with addresses like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
rather than
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]". Here's an alternate
macro configuration
file with masquerading turned on:

include(`../m4/cf.m4')
define(`confCF_VERSION', `Submit')
define(`__OSTYPE__',`')
define(`confTIME_ZONE', `USE_TZ')
define(`confDONT_INIT_GROUPS', `True')

MASQUERADE_AS(`yourdomain.com')
FEATURE(`allmasquerade')
FEATURE(`always_add_domain')
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')

FEATURE(`msp', `mailhost')

You need to change the domain name on the
MASQUERADE_AS line and the
hostname on the FEATURE(`msp') line.

SUMMARY:: [expert] Suggestions to help Minimize List Email Traffic

2003-06-17 Thread Tru64 User
OK, well said ppl. We (mandrake experts) don't want
changes!. Got it.

How about encouraging people to post final summaries
then? At least we will know what solved their
problems. In many cases, i read "arguments" but at
the end never knows what resolved the issue.

For example, as far as this thread goes, the initiator
(me) is satisfied with the # of answers, thus I am
posting the summary, with the inputs I received, which
is, a SUMMARY of what all others said. NOT an entry of
all what was SAID.

_Thanks All for reading..

Richard.

Re: [expert](2) Suggestions to help Minimize List Email Traffic

2003-06-17 Thread Tru64 User
Additional Notes:
The list I am talking about has been in existence long
before Linux mandrake was popular. Before HPQ bought
Compaq, and b4 Compaq bought DEC.
DEC Alpha -Tru64 Unix List.

With our list, questions are posted as long as the
problem exists. When problem is solved, everyone is
quiet. So one never knows if the problem was resolved
or not. And if resolved, which of the 10+ responses
solved the issue? That is always a mistery. As a
result, same question will come up again perhaps two
days down the road from a different user!

Sample entry of the usefulness of posting questions
then SUMMARY only, everything else being offline.

* SAMPLE ENTRY ***
Thanks to all those who replied - all your advice was
helpful!

The problem turned out to be that the dsf database is
not backwards
compatible between releases or patchkits.
One of the patches in the 5.1B patch kit 2 introduced
an
incompatibility with the previous version.

I solved the problem by running (still in single user
mode):

  # dn_setup -init
  # dsfmgr -K

Then I rebooted and the OS installation concluded
successfully.

Dr Blinn also suggested to execute

  >>>set bootdef_dev ""

from the SRM console before reinstalling - this
supposedly also clears
the problem before a fresh installation.
Unfortunately I have not verified that yet myself, but
it is apparently
also mentioned in connection with the guilty patch.

Lesson learned - next time I shall be more careful to
read up on the
patches and not just go ahead installing all of them.
Fortunately this was just a test system...

Kind regards,

  Michael

Hi All,

The list I am refering to is for tru64 Unix

IMHO, that list serves much better purpose than this
one. Searching their archives, its almost 100% hit on
subjects that have been discussed before. And, better
yet, one always goes for the SUMMARY/Resolution. Isnt
that what we all want? Or is this a Gossip corner??
For a Gossip corner, we are OKbut for true
learning and solving of problems, we need solutions!

While there might be 10 replies to one posting, only
one might be really relevant, the rest personal
emotions and such. Wouldn't you rather see a summary
that only includes the one entry that correctly
resolved the problem? I would. So instead of reading
25 back-and-forth entries to find one solution, i
would rather have one post --then--its solution.

Again, its just an idea "Different folks, Different

[expert] Suggestions to help Minimize List Email Traffic

2003-06-16 Thread Tru64 User
Hi ALL,

I have one suggestion to make. To minimize traffic on
this list and make it a "Read All" list, i suggest the
following rules which are being followed on a
different list I am subscribing to to be adopted on
this list:

After a question is posted, all replies should go
directly ONLY to the person who posted the question.
After a satisfactory resolution, the original poster
should then post a SUMMARY:, which is a description
to what/how the problem was solved, to the list.

If responses slow down, and problem has not been
resolved, then the original poster can submit an
UPDATE: to the status of his problem if not resolved.

Finally, if a problem is never resolved, send a
SUMMARY anyway, to say that problem was not
resolved/or no replies. U might be suprised how many
more may reply then, since they always assumed someone
else had : -)

That way, every post will have mostly 2-3 total
entries only.

1. Original Question
2. (Optional)UPDATE &
3. SUMMARY.

Heading should be tagged as such too, to show whether
this is an UPDATE or a SUMMARY. This makes it easier
to filter into peoples mailboxes.
That way, it will be very useful to all of us, and
future users of mdk.

I come across posts that should be offlinelike
email today said "I can say more offline than here"
and then, another email reply goes "I tell you"
Those should not belong here in my opinion. Those two
lines are 2/116 i received from Sat 10AM to Monday
10AM. Automatically it forces a "HighLight ALL,
DELETE" for it takes too long to read all
emails...only to find out that a big number should not
have been posted to the public to begin with.

Let me know what you guys think. BTW, who is the list
monitor?

_Thanks

Richard Mollel

Re: [expert] change mouse sensitivity?

2003-05-29 Thread Tru64 User
Yes...he meant Mandrake control center.

Also (no insults, not sure how much u r into linux)
but, with winblows, cable select works OK for multiple
drives. For linux, Gotta specify explicitly which is
master, which is slave with the jumpers.

Coming to think of it, i tried adding a third drive to
mandrake 8.2 a while back (on a temporary measure, to
move installation from one drive to next), and i was
not able to. It simply did not work...having it as
either hdc or hdd. With urgency, i simply did unplug
the cdrom and hooked the drive, and moved my files.
Never tried it again. But all sorts of combination
btwn the drive & cdrom on IDE1 (not IDE0) did not
work. I could only get each working, but not together.
So it might be something wrong somewhere
there...please make sure u post ur resolution.

_Thanks

Richard Mollel

[expert] class hash not available

2003-04-02 Thread Tru64 User
Having a difficult time upgrading sendmail on Mandrake
9.0 (works like a charm on my other 8.2 machines)

Sendmail just came up with 8.12.9
Ran the usual sendmail "sh Build", and it works ok.
But then, when I try "service start sendmail" i get an
error::
Starting sendmail: makemap: Need to recompile with
-DNEWDB for hash support
make: *** [access.db] Error 73

So, OK, i create a site.config.m4 file, and added the
following to it::
APPENDDEF(`confMAPDEF', `-NEWDB')

NoGo!! Getting Error:

cc -O2 -I. -I../../include -DNEWDB -DNDBM -DNIS

I even downloaded the Berkerly db library, and added
the following to my site.config.m4

APPENDDEF(`confLIBDIRS',
`-L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.1/lib')
APPENDDEF(`confINCDIRS',

Still, NoGo

I believe it might have something to do with cc
compileri have 2.96 on 8.2machines, and 3.2 of the

Any ideas on how to overcome this?
RPM are more of a nightmare..Too many
dependecies, some of which are already installed, but
it is missing an older version of it, so it aborts!!
SO i prefer manual, using my own directory structure.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
(In the meantime, am trying to locate sendmail
mailinglist)

[expert] MandrakeUpdate-Signature not correct

2003-03-26 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

Problems with MandrakeUpdate, all updates claim
"signature is not correct, should i install anyway?"

eg. The signature of the package
`timezone-2.2.5-16mdk.i586.rpm' is not correct:
gpg: signature made Fri 21 Mar 2003 09:07:25 PM EST
using DSAkey ID 22458A98
gpg: Can't check signature: publiv key not found

How can I fix this problem? Is it safe to continue?

Getting updates from::
retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of
"update_source"...
--08:45:17--
ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandrake/Mandrake/updates/9.0/base/hdlist.cz
   => `/var/cache/urpmi/partial/.listing'
Resolving mirrors.secsup.org... done.

Setting the directive below in proftpd.conf and
allowing similar ports to get thru iptables seems to
have solved the problem.

PassivePorts 6 65535

Iptables settings::

Re: [expert] hard disk duplication and partition growth

2003-03-19 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

Even for root, tar options given previously and cpio
work perfectly.
With partimaged, U better make sure your enw root
partition is "exactly" the same size as the old.
Slightly bigger new root, and the extra space will be
wasted.
Slightly smaller new root, and U wont be able to
restore to a smaller partition than what u began with.

Any pointers i should be reading to enable this?
I might get some time to work on it this weekend.

2003-03-19 Thread Tru64 User
U know what works best?
#cd /from_dir
#tar cvf - . | (cd /path/to/new/dir; tar xvpf -)

This will preserve everything as is!! Including links
and dates! Well, everything.

Explanation::
tar c=create v=verbose f=="device" "." ==from here
"|" (pipe) sends out of the section to second section

"()" opens a subshell; then changes dir to new
dir, and copies, using tar, all the input from "-" to
standdard "-"
p==preserve (or could use --same-permissions)

All this is in tar manpage.

[expert] MDK anonftp behind iptables

2003-03-19 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

Struggling to setup an anonymous ftp site on a server
running iptables.

Have no idea what ports to let open for clients coming
from all different backgrounds.

By turning off firewall, and monitoring connections, i
have seen ftp-data on 1471, 1472 and other connections
on 37025 or 18002 and 18003

Any magical ways of dealing with this?

Re: [expert] Need experienced advice on putting MDK on a Dell Inspiron 4000

2003-03-19 Thread Tru64 User
Hi TechnoSlick,

Just last night I loaded Mandrake 9.0 on two Dells,
one, an Inspiron 8100 which has a swap cd-rom/floppy
and an Inspiron 2600.

With the OS at the 9.0 level and above(even 8.2,
my previous install was OK).it has become a total
no-brainer to load this Mandrake. I did not have to do
any extra tweaking. Started with the cdrom from boot
to completion of installation, and then rebooted
cleanly. Then shutdown again, switch to floppy,
reboot, (it harddrake2 or whatever it was will
recgnize it immediately as a new device, and ask to
configure it). After it comes all the way up, created
a boot disk from the floppy drive for emergency
timesalthough i trust more the same CD booting
into rescue mode.fulfils more that way, but a few
gives and takes here and there.

What else? I have a 30GB drive. So i used partition
magic (there are freewares out there i believe that
can achieve the same, like "parted"
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/ but i have not
used them)...well, i used partition magic, since it
came with factory installed XP Professional.

I have it 10GB NTFS for XP, 10GB FAT32 for shared file
system btwn Xp and Mandrake (Both can see and write to
this partition, this is where i have my files, not
installed programs) and another 10GB for Linux,
Mandrake 9.0 (Setting up 9.1RC2 as we speak over the
9.0)
In this mode, XP has acccess (rw) to 20GB. Linux has
access (RW) of 20GB, and (RO) of 10GB. Yes!! Now we
can read NTFS partitions.
I did let Lilo take control of the boot process. It
overwrote the XP bootloader without destroying
it.and it gives me a choice to boot either. I did
not loose anything in this case from the install Dell
components, since i did not format the XP partition,
just resized it.

Another good reference just incase u dont want to
touch your XP boot partition for the Dual boot
scenario is
http://www.poopoccurs.com/linux/dualboot.html
Only catch here is that u will need a boot disk, and u
cant create that if u have to swap btwn cd-rom and
floppy during installation. But if u have separate
bays for them, it wont be a problem.

Guess i have given u enough infofeel free to ask
for more.
My configs...on Insipiron:: Graphics ...Nvidia Ge
Force (and yes, 9.0 has its drivers included, I had to
install them myself with 8.2)

Ciao.

Re: [expert] OT Linux user from Taipei familiar with available hardware

2003-03-14 Thread Tru64 User
Sorry ALL,

I shouldn't have sent this to the public to begin
with, i meant to reply directly to person who sent
initial OT message.

It just happened that someone had asked me if I know
of distributors who can supply hardware parts directly
to Tanzania, instead of them having to buy from UK or
South Africa or in some cases, US, where a price
markup has been done already. This makes their
products unaffordable to the African market.

Thats all. So i figured it wont hurt to
askthey worst case is a simple NO, and the
opposite can be glory to others.

_Thanks

2003-03-13 Thread Tru64 User
Have u noticed, or did I err, (I dont think so
though), went thru it twice, same thing) that Mandy
9.1rc2 does not prompt for where to install lilo? I
quickly assumed hda and overwrote my windoze bootsect.

_Thanks

[expert] HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

2003-02-27 Thread Tru64 User
Kernel 2.4.19-7
Mandrake 9.0

Completely unable to enable dma!!
No its not kernel options (These are correct). Why?
Because I moved drive(therefore same linux install) to
similar PC (exactly similar), and I am able to set dma
on/off on the fly.
Only one this ONE particular node, it wont happen!!

Other Useful Info (to help me with)
lspci output::

(rev 02)

Boot Log (dmesg)::

ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

What I have done so far::
1. doublechecked kernel options for DMA, enabled!
Proved by running install on diff machine.
2. Reset BIOS
3. Tried other twinkling (BIOS) that could have
effect.
4. Changed IDE Ribbon cable.
5. Used 3 drives with linux install--All unable to
enable using_dma on this one node.

SUSPECT? ::
1. Primary IDE controller bad?
2. Resource Collision--How to deal with that? Not sure
"with what" the collision is.

IDEAS?

Clueless yours,

Richard

[expert] High Memory Usage Explanation

2003-02-27 Thread Tru64 User
Mem: 2063808K av, 2048376K used, OR
Mem: 900940K av, 820660K used

I am a bit confused with the output of "top" and
asking for further explanation. Reading its manpage
did not clear this out for me.
Without any users but me, logged in, doing nothing,
Mandy 9.0 (2.4-19mdk)& Mandy 8.2 (2.4-18mdk)resp.
shows mem used as above, which suggests all mem. used
pretty much.
However, no single processes added up, total this used
memory.
How else can i explain this to myself?
How else can i find out actual memory used/free?

Interestingly, if and when i reboot, it starts out
with about 90% of that memory showing as free, as days
go by, it goes up, until "almost" mem_avail==mem_used,
then it stays constant until next reboot.

Yours Clueless,

Richard

Re: [expert] Mandy Locks Up on simple tar!

2003-02-24 Thread Tru64 User
Thanks for the response.
I will switch to a new disk today. What i have been
doing is saving/making a full system backup to a scsi
disk (sda1).
Then when the main disk fails, I simply restore from
sda1. It has worked so well in the past, only this
time I cant restore the same saved filesets (/, /usr)
cause the system locks up before I finish the restore
process.

If I dont perform any tar process, the system works OK
for number of days, as Memory used keeps climbing.
When Mem used==Mem Avail, the system locks up again,
until a reboot.
PS and top both have not been able to show me what is
eating up all the memory. Mind u, this box has 2GB
worth of it, and it is doing nothing more than being a
NFS server!!
I will update of performance after disk switch, but if
there anymore hints, they are welcomed (B4 i throw it
out-tha-window!!)

_Thanks ALL, and esp. "civilme"!

2003-02-21 Thread Tru64 User
Mandy 9.0, 2GB RAM, 500MB swap, Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz
CPU...locks up on a simple tar
Then i only have to reboot. Thats the only thing i can
do!!

Can't figure out whats causing it!! What can be
causing this?? tar is for a 5GB directory (largest
file mandrake iso 650Mb), on a RAID array , sda, local
to this server.

Thanks..

Interesting that booting with a boot disk, it works
OK, but Master Boot Record will not hold lilo info.
Just a blinking cursor at that point.
I will switch disk.and restore

[expert] Mandy 9.0 Boot problems

2003-02-20 Thread Tru64 User
A mandrake 9.0 running kernel 2.4-19 decided to
simply, HANG on boot!!
Using a boot disk, comes up fine. Then I run lilo -q,
and it responds with all my lilo options corrrectly::
cere@/var/log/kernel$ lilo -q
openMosixLVM*
linux
linux-nonfb
linux-enterpris
openMosix
linux-smp
failsafe
floppy

I re-install lilo, and try a reboot, same problem,
HANG on boot, until boot disk is used!!

Ideas?? Disk dying??

[expert] Kernel Panic: No init Found

2003-02-12 Thread Tru64 User
Hi All,

Running Mandrake 8.2 kernel 2.4.18-6mdk default
installation.
I wanted to add support for lkcd (Linux Kernel Crash
Dump), so i downloaded from kernels.org the 2.4.18
kernel.

1. Patched the kernel with lkcd patch.
2. I copied /boot/configs from current configuration
to /usr/src/linux/.configs in the hope of having same
config as current running kernel.
3. Ran make xconfig, and enabled lkcd under kernel
Hacking, including lkcd gzip compression. Save, exit.

4. Ran make dep. Then ran make bzImage.
Moved bzImage to /boot/mylkcdknl

5. Added /boot/mylkcdknl to lilo.conf, and ran lilo.
(copy of lilo entry below)
6. Reboot, tried to boot new kernel, FAILS!!

Last messages:: Error 19 mounting reiserfs
Kernel Panic: No init found.

All i added was lkcd support to new kernel, otherwise
it should be exactly same as original, right?

Any ideas on getting this new kernel to work are
welcomed.

_Thanks

[expert] Weird NFS/Memory Issue-System Locking up

2003-02-10 Thread Tru64 User
When I issue a showmount -e "nodename" from a client,
the server ("nodename") locks up completely, and top
shows high memory usage (893k out og 900k).

Suprisingly enough, "ps -aux" does not show any single
process utilizing much memory...
ps -aux|wc -l ==80processes, all either 0.0 or 0.1%
utilization, which amounts to less than 8% overall

Where is this extra memory utlized?
Why is it not showing up?
Why is it only doing this after a showmount -e from a
client?

Only way to get out of this is a complete reboot!!!
I am running Mandrake Linux 8.2 Kernel 2.4.28-6mdk
(default kernel, no modifications done)

would appreciate any pointers.

_Thanks

Richard

Re: [expert] Load Balancing, windows style more or less

2003-02-05 Thread Tru64 User
You might want to consider OpenMosix (
http://openmosix.sourceforge.net/ )

"..Once you have installed openMosix, the nodes in
the cluster start talking to one another and the
cluster adapts itself to the workload. Processes
originating from any one node, if that node is too
busy compared to others, can migrate to any other
node. openMosix continuously attempts to optimize the
resource allocation."

Perfect for Load balancing.

[expert] Annonying Reverse Video

2003-01-30 Thread Tru64 User
Mandy9.0/8.0
How does one get rid of the annonying reverse video,
like one u get (using xterm)when u use man, more etc.?

Suddenly all screen is white, and characters are
black. Temporal solution i have lived with for a while
is entering vi, then existing. This clears it, but it
comes up again when any of the above commands are
used.

Re: [expert] Veeery Slow NFS Transfers from Mandy9.0

2003-01-21 Thread Tru64 User
thanks much for replying

I will check on ur recommendation 1 & 2, i had not
done that! I will report my findings.

I have however, checked #3. I had it on 100FD, i now
changed it to 100HD, after finding that switch port
was at 100HD. No much improvement, however.

Currently, using net_monitor, on a local 100Mb LAN, i
am getting only an average of 800KB/sec as a receiving
speed!!

[expert] Veeery Slow NFS Transfers from Mandy9.0

2003-01-21 Thread Tru64 User
Hi,

Am having a heck of a time trying to figure out a
bottleneck for NFS transfers.
I have 2 Mandy boxes, acting only as NFS file servers.

BOX1:
1.8Ghz, Mandt 8.2 Kernel 2.4.18, reiserfs, NFSv3 on
100MbitFD [ NIC:Intel Corp. 82820 (ICH2) Chipset
Ethernet Controller (rev 03) ]

BOX2:
2.4Ghz Dual Xeon Processors, Mandy 9.0 Kernel 2.4.20,
LVM is being used, file system is still reiserfs,
NFSv3 on 100MbitFD [ NIC:Intel Corp. 82557/8/9
[Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 0d) ]

-Both run iptables, no effect on transfer rates when
iptables is on/off on either.

Rate of transfer differs significantly!! They both
serve disks (1Tb) to a single tru64 Unix server (Using
IDE Raid, same configuration of RAIDcard and storage
box)

a 77GB transfer from Tru64Unix disk to an NFS mounted
disk from BOX1, took about 8hrs.

A 77GB transfer from Tru64Unix disk to an NFS mounted
disk from BOX2, has taken two days and counting!!

No NFS errors reported. Everything seems to be working
perfectly!, except for the transfer rate!
Even utlizing the RAID array without LVM, but on BOX2,
yields the same very slow transfer rates! Is it
something with Mandy9.0? or what else could help in
troubleshooting the issue here?

Clueless Richard,

_Thanks
