[expert] 9.2 and BootDisk
Forgive me if this has been discussed. I tried it with 3 different machines, 4 different floppies. "A Error Occurred. mkbootdisk failed" or "Unable to properly close mkbootdisk, No space left on device" My problem is that I have dualboot scenarios..with winblows.and its boot loader HAS to remain the default for some internal reasons. So linux is at /dev/hda7 Usually I create a bootdisk during istall, and use it to get back in linux, after perform a dd of the bootsector. Is this a known problem? _Thanks Richard __ Do you Yahoo!? RE: [expert] Which Mandrake to Buy?
OK, the consesus seems to be buying Mandrake Club membership, and most ppl prefer the download edition. (mandrake, maybe dont spend too much time making all those other editions...) I am just hoping Mandrake wont drop the ball on the downloaded edition, and stop offering updates, like Redhat did (kind-off)...thus only supporting the "paid for" editions. Thanks all for the quick replies.I got my three CD's downloaded in under 40mins over the weekend. [expert] Which Mandrake to Buy?
OK, I have some money, would like to support Mandy as much as I like using it. I am intending to upgrade an 8.2 machine (not updates for it anymore, even security, right?), who basic function is running 2 webservers, (virtual) and as an anonymous ftp server. The anonyftp files are on a promisetech raid array, hooked with an adaptec 29160 scsi card. The download version of 8.2 worked 100% for me. Now that i was considering purchasing the 9.2, I can see lots of versions out therePowerpack, Pro-Suite, Discovery, Corporate Server!! It is not for home usebut yet don't need all the business/selling language associated with the versions...all I need is a Good working Mandrake 9.2, whereby I can download updates without passwords!! as I have always done with 8.2. [expert] PS hanging due to NFS?, Cant KILL
Hi All, I run an openmosix cluster using Mandrake, and had problems with PS hanging or whole system for that matter. It is still an ongoing issue for a while now, i took it up to openmosix guys, and response is that 90% of the time its network related, the rest 10% hardware! Tracing down the problem today via /proc, trying to read every cmdline for a process, it hangs on PID=25583. Ran strace for `ps`, hanged same location (log below) open("/proc/25583/status", O_RDONLY)= 7 read(7, "Name:\tchange_missing\nState:\tD (d"..., 511) = 463 close(7) munmap(0x40013000, 4096)= 0 open("/proc/25583/cmdline", O_RDONLY) = 7 THEN: cd'ed into /proc/25583 `ls` (look at exe output) lrwxrwxrwx1 stuart stds 0 Oct 28 14:16 exe -> /targus/linuxfiles/stuart/patches/ver006/exp03/.nfs000a839e0001 (deleted) Not sure what that deleted line means, and all other procs don't have it. However, BIGGER problem is that this process 25583 cant be killed!! Not kill-9 or kill -KILL that helps. Its currently owned by root. Is there any other way to kill this sucker, other than a reboot? Cool thing is that i have an internal network (home of about 4 nodes, windoze, gatewaty is Mandrake), when no one is using the network, it kind of goes to sleepand the moment someone fires up a browser, it will auto-connect. File listing there:: total 79984 -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus 3317856 Oct 17 07:08 s_01_6345.subrun.2d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus37602368 Oct 17 07:08 s_01_6345.subrun.3d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1772 Oct 17 07:07 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1567 Oct 17 07:07 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus 3317856 Oct 17 07:52 p_02_6345.subrun.2d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus37602368 Oct 17 07:52 p_02_6345.subrun.3d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1772 Oct 17 07:52 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.2d -rw-r--r-- 1 stuart nimbus1567 Oct 17 07:52 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d It shows all files transfered. Then i do a listing on the local system (my mandy box). Only four show up!! [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll *6345* -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17 09:30 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:30 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d -rw-r--r--1 stuart user 3317856 Oct 17 09:30 p_02_6345.subrun.2d -rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17 09:31 p_02_6345.subrun.3d Then listing by inode:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -i *6345* 18541 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1772 Oct 17 09:43 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.2d 18542 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:43 s_01_6345.subrun.ctl.3d 18543 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user 3317856 Oct 17 09:43 p_02_6345.subrun.2d 18544 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user37602368 Oct 17 09:43 p_02_6345.subrun.3d And then, individual listing of one of the missing files, by name, (Its there, it shows up then!!):: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -li|grep 18546 [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:38 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d AND with inode to make sure it is there:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -li|grep 18546 [EMAIL PROTECTED]> ll -i p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d 18546 -rw-r--r--1 stuart user1567 Oct 17 09:38 p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d YEs, it is there, but not showing up otherwise, unless explicitly called. So then, i copy it to another filename, it works. I try a move:: [EMAIL PROTECTED]>mv p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad mv: cannot move `p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d` to `p_02_6345.subrun.ctl.3d.bad`: No such file or directory Wow.seems like some corruption in here. It is a 850GB filesystemI hope I dont have to backup/reformat and restore the whole thing!! Any other suggestions? (Havent ran reiserfsck yet, still mounted!) _Thanks Richard __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: [expert] Re: All I want to do is FTP
http://rpmfind.net in most cases will have your rpm. But you better update your package lists, perform a "urpmi.update -a" If you dont have additional sources created for getting packages, check out easy urpmi at http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/index.php This will create a command line to copy-n-paste that will give additional sources for rpm packages. In my opinion, "urpmi proftpd" should be working if u have enough sources setup. _Thanks Richard --- James <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Thanks for the reply! > > I've removed the 0 byte file, and I've also removed > the proftpd version I > had. [expert] openssh-3.7p1 & Mandy 9.0
Hi ALL, I have a problem with openssh-3.7p1 working on Mandy. It compiles fine, and I perform an install (on /opt/openssh-3.7p1). I can start it fine (link it up to /etc/init.d/..blah blah), so "service ssh restart" starts it OK. Problem is that then no-one can log in. Keeps complaining about bad passwd!! I have openssh-3.6p1 (compiled version) working OK, and I can log in with it, using same password. My problem is that I HAVE to use the latest and greatest out there, and YES, i know Mandrake has released an rpm patch for 3.6p1. But, with our internal scan, anything running a version identified as vulnerable, even if patched, is flagged. So i have always used locally compiled versions of ssh. Anyone else gone past this problem? Longing for a response/idea/suggestion/recommendation only on getting openssh-3.7p1 to work. _Thanks Richard. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Wow, Can go with mindi/mondo (urpmi mind) would take care of it. Or, in my case, buy a cheapo drive $30.00 gives u 40Gb nowadays, and tar cf /dev/hdb/root.tar / for i in /usr /var /opt /home /whateverfilesystem do tar cf /mnt/hdb/$i $i done So if hda dies, all u do is replace it, and boot with install disk, rescue mode, create ur new filesystems, and restore from backup drive only the files/directory into new location. then run lilo -r /mnt/hdb/ reboot with new drive. Works everytime for me. I even clone systems this way (primitive, but works!) Re: [expert] I Hate RPM's!!
Thanks Vincent for all the education. I knew that was the best way to get the info out of someone This was all done on a a test system.so nothing is really lost so far. It makes perfect sense from your explanation that the RPM's I was trying to install are for RH. In the future, how does one make rpm's for mandrake then? Say, I want "openssl version" to show me 0.9.7b so that i dont get flagged by some scanners looking at responses version command? I was trying to update openssl to stop myself from getting "flagged" for having a vulnerable system based on a version # only. [eg. sendmail 8.12.6 is patched on Mandrake, BUT, i had to upgrade for 8.12.9 for the same reason!, since scanners would flag 8.12.6 as vulnerable]. Also, after changing the links in /usr/lib to point to newer /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7, then ran ldconfig, it did reset them to original config! (ie. pointing back to 0.9.6). Can you educate me on that too? Readin "man ldconfig" has not shaded a light yet! Good thing i have not touched any actual hosts being used. BUT, how then can I ran openssl-0.9.7b on the them (using rpm)? _Thanks much Richard --- Vincent Danen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Tue Jul 29, 2003 at 10:54:20AM -0700, Tru64 User > wrote: > > > i checked my openssl, it was version 0.9.6x > > (vulnerable) > > MandrakeUpdate, does not offer its upgrade via > > security updates. > > What vulnerability are you thinking of, > specifically? [expert] I Hate RPM's!!
Hi, i checked my openssl, it was version 0.9.6x (vulnerable) MandrakeUpdate, does not offer its upgrade via security updates. OK. So? Download openssl-0.9.7b (No rpm available) OK. Make one of my own (rpm -tb .tar.gz), Fine. Try installing (complains about conflicting stuff!) rpm -e openssl-0.9.6* ;libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.4mdk is needed by a bunch of stuff. So, I used rpm -i --force openssl-0.9.7b-. OK, Good. But libopenssl0-0.9.6i-1.4mdk was not overwritten! So? manually adjusted link for libssl.so.0 to point to libssl.so.0.9.7 instead of libssl.so.0.9.6, and likewise for libcrypto.so.0 OK. Good. Openssl upgraded. #ssh otherhost; OpenSSL version mismatch. Built against 90607f, you have 90702f Arrrggg.i will have to built my own ssh then, no rpm for 3.6p1 available. Try building my own: rpm -tb openssh-3.6p1.tar.gz error: x11-askpass missing. Duh!! Downloaded that from some site: one more try: error: failed build dependencies: XFree86-imake is needed by openssh-3.6p1-2 Can't locate XFree86-imake rpm!! Gave up making openssh rpm, I will perform manual install: ./configure --with-tcp-wrapper Error; libwrap not found (I have tcp-wrapper rpm installed though!!) Google for libwrap library, found an rpm for it: rpm -ivh libwrap-7.6.30.i386.rpm ; Error:error: failed dependencies: tcp_wrappers < 7.6-28 conflicts with libwrap-7.6-30 So, now I have to uninstall tcp_wrappers to install libwrap (If you are still reading, do you even remember the original problem?) [expert] Avoiding NFS clients Hang when NFS server dies
Hi All, My Unix boxes are heavy crossmounters of disks served mainly by Mandy Linux, + mandy-mandy mounts. Problem is that if any one host goes down, all other hosts hang with a df. Additionally, other programs that utilize "df" (eg. our backups, ssh --when it tries to generate random seed runs a number of commands, including df) hang as well. I have read and implemented two "thought" solutions: 1. mounting inside a dir i.e. mount -t nfs HOSTA:/dirAAA /HOSTA/dirAAA instead of: mount -t nfs HOSTA:/dirAAA /dirAAA It is not suggested to mount nfs dirs under root. 2.Using the "soft" option for mounting (default=hard). None of these are a cure. Any additional suggestions out there? _Thanks Richard __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! [expert] tar backups Fail on Restore
Hi, I have had 3 instances now (ALL failures) whereby I tried to restored Linux Backups done with tar. Steps I took: #Backup for Root file system:: tar cvfl /my/backup/place/root.tar / #Backup for other file systems for i in /usr /var /opt /home do tar cvfl /my/backup/place/`basename`$i.tar $i done This works fine, backing up to a 1TB Raid disk attached via SCSI. Then I switch the disk (exactly similar disk) on the host machine, boot with an install disk, "rescue" mode. I mount my partitions under /mnt, including the /sda1 drive. Utilize tar xvf to restore...all partition, root goes to hda1, /usr goes to hda6, just like the original disk. Then try to boot! Missing:: Cannot find tonnes of modules, /var/wtmp, and gets stuck completely at starting system logger! Cant go further than that. Where can i be going wrong? I thought i performed a FULL system backup by Filesystem, why should I have stuff missing then? Any help, clues, will be highly appreciated. = __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Re: [expert](2) Suggestions to help Minimize List Email Traffic
Additional Notes: The list I am talking about has been in existence long before Linux mandrake was popular. Before HPQ bought Compaq, and b4 Compaq bought DEC. DEC Alpha -Tru64 Unix List. With our list, questions are posted as long as the problem exists. When problem is solved, everyone is quiet. So one never knows if the problem was resolved or not. And if resolved, which of the 10+ responses solved the issue? That is always a mistery. As a result, same question will come up again perhaps two days down the road from a different user! Sample entry of the usefulness of posting questions then SUMMARY only, everything else being offline. * SAMPLE ENTRY *** Thanks to all those who replied - all your advice was helpful! The problem turned out to be that the dsf database is not backwards compatible between releases or patchkits. One of the patches in the 5.1B patch kit 2 introduced an incompatibility with the previous version. I solved the problem by running (still in single user mode): # dn_setup -init # dsfmgr -K Then I rebooted and the OS installation concluded successfully. Dr Blinn also suggested to execute >>>set bootdef_dev "" from the SRM console before reinstalling - this supposedly also clears the problem before a fresh installation. Unfortunately I have not verified that yet myself, but it is apparently also mentioned in connection with the guilty patch. Lesson learned - next time I shall be more careful to read up on the patches and not just go ahead installing all of them. Fortunately this was just a test system... Kind regards, Michael === original mail follows === Hi managers, I have a strange problem installing Tru64 5.1B on a DS-10. I am in the process of adapting an installation procedure based on the clone installation feature to the version 5.1B, and so far I had performed MANY such installations of 5.1B on this particular machine as well as others. However, yesterday I downloaded the aggregate patch kit 0002 for 5.1B (which was released on 14 May 2003), and installed it on that particular machine (ALL patches). [expert] Suggestions to help Minimize List Email Traffic
Hi ALL, I have one suggestion to make. To minimize traffic on this list and make it a "Read All" list, i suggest the following rules which are being followed on a different list I am subscribing to to be adopted on this list: After a question is posted, all replies should go directly ONLY to the person who posted the question. After a satisfactory resolution, the original poster should then post a SUMMARY:, which is a description to what/how the problem was solved, to the list. If responses slow down, and problem has not been resolved, then the original poster can submit an UPDATE: to the status of his problem if not resolved. Finally, if a problem is never resolved, send a SUMMARY anyway, to say that problem was not resolved/or no replies. U might be suprised how many more may reply then, since they always assumed someone else had : -) That way, every post will have mostly 2-3 total entries only. 1. Original Question 2. (Optional)UPDATE & 3. SUMMARY. Heading should be tagged as such too, to show whether this is an UPDATE or a SUMMARY. This makes it easier to filter into peoples mailboxes. That way, it will be very useful to all of us, and future users of mdk. I come across posts that should be offlinelike email today said "I can say more offline than here" and then, another email reply goes "I tell you" Those should not belong here in my opinion. Those two lines are 2/116 i received from Sat 10AM to Monday 10AM. Automatically it forces a "HighLight ALL, DELETE" for it takes too long to read all emails...only to find out that a big number should not have been posted to the public to begin with. Let me know what you guys think. BTW, who is the list monitor? _Thanks Richard Mollel = __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Re: [expert] change mouse sensitivity?
Yes...he meant Mandrake control center. Also (no insults, not sure how much u r into linux) but, with winblows, cable select works OK for multiple drives. For linux, Gotta specify explicitly which is master, which is slave with the jumpers. Coming to think of it, i tried adding a third drive to mandrake 8.2 a while back (on a temporary measure, to move installation from one drive to next), and i was not able to. It simply did not work...having it as either hdc or hdd. With urgency, i simply did unplug the cdrom and hooked the drive, and moved my files. Never tried it again. But all sorts of combination btwn the drive & cdrom on IDE1 (not IDE0) did not work. I could only get each working, but not together. So it might be something wrong somewhere there...please make sure u post ur resolution. _Thanks Richard Mollel --- elPunishar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > sorry, i forgot to say, i'm running mandrake 9.1. > > where would i find the KDE control center ? you > don't mean the mandrake > control center ? > > On Wednesday 28 May 2003 15:43, Ronald J. Re: [expert] hard disk duplication and partition growth
Hi, Even for root, tar options given previously and cpio work perfectly. With partimaged, U better make sure your enw root partition is "exactly" the same size as the old. Slightly bigger new root, and the extra space will be wasted. Slightly smaller new root, and U wont be able to restore to a smaller partition than what u began with. _Thanks Richard Mollel --- James Sparenberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Wed, 2003-03-19 at 07:17, Ric Tibbetts wrote: > > Forget cp, it will nearly always choke on some > things. Re: [expert] hard disk duplication and partition growth
U know what works best? #cd /from_dir #tar cvf - . | (cd /path/to/new/dir; tar xvpf -) This will preserve everything as is!! Including links and dates! Well, everything. Explanation:: tar c=create v=verbose f=="device" "." ==from here "|" (pipe) sends out of the section to second section "()" opens a subshell; then changes dir to new dir, and copies, using tar, all the input from "-" to standdard "-" p==preserve (or could use --same-permissions) All this is in tar manpage. _Thanks Richard Mollel --- "J. Re: [expert] Need experienced advice on putting MDK on a Dell Inspiron 4000
Hi TechnoSlick, Just last night I loaded Mandrake 9.0 on two Dells, one, an Inspiron 8100 which has a swap cd-rom/floppy and an Inspiron 2600. With the OS at the 9.0 level and above(even 8.2, my previous install was OK).it has become a total no-brainer to load this Mandrake. I did not have to do any extra tweaking. Started with the cdrom from boot to completion of installation, and then rebooted cleanly. Then shutdown again, switch to floppy, reboot, (it harddrake2 or whatever it was will recgnize it immediately as a new device, and ask to configure it). After it comes all the way up, created a boot disk from the floppy drive for emergency timesalthough i trust more the same CD booting into rescue mode.fulfils more that way, but a few gives and takes here and there. What else? I have a 30GB drive. So i used partition magic (there are freewares out there i believe that can achieve the same, like "parted" http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/ but i have not used them)...well, i used partition magic, since it came with factory installed XP Professional. I have it 10GB NTFS for XP, 10GB FAT32 for shared file system btwn Xp and Mandrake (Both can see and write to this partition, this is where i have my files, not installed programs) and another 10GB for Linux, Mandrake 9.0 (Setting up 9.1RC2 as we speak over the 9.0) In this mode, XP has acccess (rw) to 20GB. Linux has access (RW) of 20GB, and (RO) of 10GB. Yes!! Now we can read NTFS partitions. I did let Lilo take control of the boot process. It overwrote the XP bootloader without destroying it.and it gives me a choice to boot either. I did not loose anything in this case from the install Dell components, since i did not format the XP partition, just resized it. Another good reference just incase u dont want to touch your XP boot partition for the Dual boot scenario is http://www.poopoccurs.com/linux/dualboot.html Only catch here is that u will need a boot disk, and u cant create that if u have to swap btwn cd-rom and floppy during installation. But if u have separate bays for them, it wont be a problem. Guess i have given u enough infofeel free to ask for more. My configs...on Insipiron:: Graphics ...Nvidia Ge Force (and yes, 9.0 has its drivers included, I had to install them myself with 8.2) Ciao. Sorry ALL, I shouldn't have sent this to the public to begin with, i meant to reply directly to person who sent initial OT message. It just happened that someone had asked me if I know of distributors who can supply hardware parts directly to Tanzania, instead of them having to buy from UK or South Africa or in some cases, US, where a price markup has been done already. This makes their products unaffordable to the African market. Thats all. Thanks for the response. I will switch to a new disk today. What i have been doing is saving/making a full system backup to a scsi disk (sda1). Then when the main disk fails, I simply restore from sda1. It has worked so well in the past, only this time I cant restore the same saved filesets (/, /usr) cause the system locks up before I finish the restore process. If I dont perform any tar process, the system works OK for number of days, as Memory used keeps climbing. When Mem used==Mem Avail, the system locks up again, until a reboot. PS and top both have not been able to show me what is eating up all the memory. Mind u, this box has 2GB worth of it, and it is doing nothing more than being a NFS server!! Hi All, Running Mandrake 8.2 kernel 2.4.18-6mdk default installation. I wanted to add support for lkcd (Linux Kernel Crash Dump), so i downloaded from kernels.org the 2.4.18 kernel. 1. [expert] Weird NFS/Memory Issue-System Locking up
When I issue a showmount -e "nodename" from a client, the server ("nodename") locks up completely, and top shows high memory usage (893k out og 900k). Suprisingly enough, "ps -aux" does not show any single process utilizing much memory... ps -aux|wc -l ==80processes, all either 0.0 or 0.1% utilization, which amounts to less than 8% overall Where is this extra memory utlized? Why is it not showing up? Why is it only doing this after a showmount -e from a client? Only way to get out of this is a complete reboot!!! Re: [expert] Load Balancing, windows style more or less
You might want to consider OpenMosix ( http://openmosix.sourceforge.net/ ) "..Once you have installed openMosix, the nodes in the cluster start talking to one another and the cluster adapts itself to the workload. Processes originating from any one node, if that node is too busy compared to others, can migrate to any other node. openMosix continuously attempts to optimize the resource allocation." thanks much for replying I will check on ur recommendation 1 & 2, i had not done that! I will report my findings. I have however, checked #3. BOX1: 1.8Ghz, Mandt 8.2 Kernel 2.4.18, reiserfs, NFSv3 on 100MbitFD [ NIC:Intel Corp. 82820 (ICH2) Chipset Ethernet Controller (rev 03) ] BOX2: 2.4Ghz Dual Xeon Processors, Mandy 9.0 Kernel 2.4.20, LVM is being used, file system is still reiserfs, NFSv3 on 100MbitFD [ NIC:Intel Corp. 82557/8/9 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 0d) ] -Both run iptables, no effect on transfer rates when iptables is on/off on either. Rate of transfer differs significantly!! They both serve disks (1Tb) to a single tru64 Unix server (Using IDE Raid, same configuration of RAIDcard and storage box) a 77GB transfer from Tru64Unix disk to an NFS mounted disk from BOX1, took about 8hrs. A 77GB transfer from Tru64Unix disk to an NFS mounted disk from BOX2, has taken two days and counting!! No NFS errors reported. Everything seems to be working perfectly!, except for the transfer rate! Even utlizing the RAID array without LVM, but on BOX2, yields the same very slow transfer rates! Is it something with Mandy9.0? or what else could help in troubleshooting the issue here? Clueless Richard, _Thanks = __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
