[FairfieldLife] Hornets and I-land

2006-08-11 Thread cardemaister

Was on an island yesterday with my sister. Two
Hornets were rehearsing just above us. All of
a sudden they started performing loops.
Whoa! I was all pickled tink. The feeling
was almost like hearing for the first time
Hendrix perform SSB at Woodstock!

These conspiracy theorists remind me of what happened with the JFK
assassination: for about 35 years, a great many people believed
there was more than one shooter. And then new sophisticated
computer models became available proving beyond a shadow of a doubt
that Oswald was the lone gunman. Now you don't hear any more
theories about there being multiple shooters.

I've read everything he says except for the last

that's more sensational.

Apparently a lot of the specific information came
from arrests made in Pakistan, but it's not clear
yet how the Pakistanis knew to arrest the guys.

BTW, nobody *objects* to the NSA program or the
banking program, of course, only to their being
used without proper judicial oversight.

Mainly #2, which is closely related to #3. The
Republican strategy is to turn the Lieberman fiasco
into a symbol of the Democrats' purported opposition
to the war on terror.

The administration knew about this plot for some time.
The remarks of Cheney and Bush and other Republicans
on Lieberman's defeat were clearly coordinated with
the leaks of the plot. Almost certainly, the leaks
to the news media were timed to reinforce the notion
that Democrats are soft on national security in
light of Lieberman's defeat.

Which is, of course, a load of crap. The plot was
uncovered by police work, which is what Democrats
advocate as the primary weapon against terror, as
opposed to war and regime change. Plus which,
the Democrats have been pushing for measures to
protect against this kind of terrorism (as opposed
to the idiotic take the fight to the terrorists)
and have been blocked by the Republicans almost
every time.

No, not all. But these were covered yesterday on many different news

think they said others for quite some time and they had been using the same
program the NSA has been running and also observing their banking transactions

I'm just glad the New York Times didn't hear about this before the

system up. They have a special robot to check the pipeline but they hadn't
used it in 14 years! That will cause a rise in gas prices that is
unnecessary and people are pissed about it and it wouldn't take much to
either a) demand a big fine on BP for their screw-up or b) break up the
company or c) nationalize it. That sentiment is rising in this country and
this alert took attention on that off track.2. Lieberman losing the
election in Connecticut which could result in a snowball effect where the
house and senate would be cleaned of Republicans. The alert distracts from
that.3. Distracts from the failure in Iraq.4. Distracts from
the Israeli fiasco in Lebanon.5. Tom Ridge said the alerts were at the
request of the White House and most were fake and made no sense. I don't
trust the Bush crime family one bit.

The speculation has already been made that Lieberman probably would have
one his primary had this happened before voters in Connecticut went to the polls
so the timing theory is all wet. But I'm sure some crazy professor from Madison

Not necessarily. Lieberman is at least as useful
to the administration and Republicans as a symbol
of extreme left-wingers having purportedly taken
over the Democratic Party and proceeding to purge
all those who support the Iraq war.

Never mind that a significant majority of the
American people agree with those extreme left-
wingers. Never mind that there are other
Democrats who support the war who aren't being
purged. Never mind that the Iraq war has
nothing to do with this terrorist plot having
been busted. And never mind that most experts
on terrorism think the Iraq war has made us
*more* vulnerable to terrorism, not less.

The Republican Party is desperate. Its only
hope for 2006 (and 2008) is to try to make voters
believe the Democrats are soft on national
security.

With regard to the timing, from the Washington
Post today:

Some U.S. counterterrorism officials said plans originally were to
allow the conspiracy to develop even further. But U.S. and British
investigators made a sudden decision this week to close down the
operation after they became increasingly worried that there were
other bombers they had been unable to locate or identify, U.S.
officials said.

It seems clear that the alienation is Not a Good

allowing genuine reconciliation to take place?

These aren't rhetorical questions; I genuinely don't

Um, nope, not nutcases, sorry.

For example, here's a brief CV of the guy who wrote
the book coming out in October:

http://www2.selu.edu/Academics/Depts/HIPS/kurtz.html

Link to his testimony before the Assassination Records
Review Board (an independent federal agency established
in 1992 by George H.W. Bush):

http://mcadams.posc.mu.edu/arrb/index28.htm

He's been researching the assassination for 30 years.
He doesn't claim to have proved there was a
conspiracy, but he can document that a great deal
of the evidence in the case has been covered up,
and he observes: If Oswald did it all by himself
as just a lone nut, there's no reason for national
security or anything else to cover up anything in
the case. But there has been a massive cover-up.

[FairfieldLife] Is it possible to become God?

2006-08-11 Thread surya
Devotion is of two types. The first type is called as Bhakti, which
consists of prayers or songs through words and emotional feelings
through mind. This Bhakti gives temporary happiness only. Knowledge
is related to intelligence, which is the discrimination of real and
unreal through logical analysis. By such discrimination, you can
realize that all the forms of matter and all the feelings of
awareness are unreal. When you have realized that all the forms
(Rupa) and all the feelings (Guna) are unreal even before the level
of yourself, which is pure awareness, your life becomes completely
an entertainment in both happy and unhappy situations. The self-
realization makes you a spectator of the cinema which consists of
both happy and unhappy scenes. You will reach the state of an actor
who is entertained in all the scenes of the drama on the stage. Thus
the knowledge gives you permanent happiness which is called as
bliss. Therefore, knowledge (Jnana) is greater than devotion
(Bhakti). Here, you must note that the Bhakti is related to words
and mind, whereas Jnana is related to intelligence. Hence, both
devotion and knowledge belong to theoretical phase only which is
limited to words, mind and intelligence.

The second type of devotion is called as Para-Bhakti, which is
related to practice or sacrifice of service. This divine devotion
(Para-Bhakti) consists of divine service by sacrificing work (Karma
Sanyasa) and by sacrificing the fruit of work (Karma Phala Tyaga).
This second type of devotion is far superior than the knowledge. The
Bhakti and Jnana are selfish because in both your aim is the
attainment of bliss by yourself. The divine devotion or the divine
service is completely different, which has no selfish aim. In this
divine service, your aim is to please God and not to please
yourself. You have to receive the continuous loss and displeasure in
the divine service. In this stage you are achieving the nature of
God. God always enjoys the fruits of the sins of His devotees and is
thus subjected to continuous misery. His aim is to make His devotees
happy. God is serving His devotees. Service is always sacrifice to
make others happy at the cost of self-happiness. The Veda says that
God is bliss (Anando Brahma). The Veda reveals the meaning of this
statement by further saying Eshahyeva Anandayati which means that
God makes His devotees happy. Therefore, when we say that God is
bliss, that does not mean God is continuously enjoying the
happiness. It means only that God is making others happy
continuously. In fact such a definition only, is the proof of God
being bliss. How do you say that the fire is hot? Since the fire is
making others experience its heat, people say that fire is hot.
Similarly, if you make others happy, then only you are the
embodiment of that happiness. Now the point is whether God is
continuously unhappy by such sacrifice, which is His service to His
devotees. The answer is that God is continuously happy through such
sacrifice. He is deriving happiness continuously by enjoying the
misery of His devotees. He is not unhappy to enjoy the sins of His
devotees. Therefore, He is happy always and making His devotees also
happy.

In the first level of ignorance, the soul derives happiness only
from happy situations which are like sweets. In the second level of
realization, the soul derives happiness both from happy and unhappy
situations, which are like sweets and hots in the meals. In the
final level of the state of God, if the soul derives continuous
happiness from hots only, such a soul has become almost God (Mama
Sadharmyamagatah – Gita). Such a soul is almost equal to God. Such a
devotee also attracts the sins of deserving devotees and makes them
happy. Such an attraction of sins is always a secret because the
deserving devotee will never agree to such transfer of sins. A
devotee who had reached this highest level came to see Sri
Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who was suffering with cancer. The devotee
sat near Sri Paramahamsa and was trying to attract the cancer onto
him. Sri Paramahamsa, who was the human incarnation immediately
recognized this and pushed the devotee away from Him. Therefore, the
devotee can attain all the powers of God and the divine nature of
God, which consists of continuous sacrifice for the sake of
devotees. Then, why not the devotee, be called as God in full sense?
Except one point, the devotee can become God in all aspects and that
one point is the creation, maintenance and destruction of this
universe.

The question above, what say the tru-believer reading the list?

I'm not by any means the True Believer that the True
Nonbelievers try to portray me as, but your question
triggers another one in my mind: What, if anything,
might be *lost* if the TMO attempted to reconcile
 with its meditators?

As disappointing as the situation looks now, is
there anything of value that it's preserving that
would be put at risk if the various policies that
 create this alienation were dropped?

It seems clear that the alienation is Not a Good
Thing, but is it unquestionably worse than the
alternatives? Are there *feasible* (key word) ways
of preserving what needs to be preserved while also
allowing genuine reconciliation to take place?

 These aren't rhetorical questions; I genuinely don't
 know.

They're good and necessary questions.

I wonder, first of all, what would be lost if the TMO attempted
the reconciliation, as you suggest above. Well, if by
reconciliation we mean that all those who have been trained as
sidhas -- regardless of current or past affiliations with other
teachers or teachings -- are allowed into the Dome provided they do
just the TM and TM-Sidhi programs while there:

I think the TMO is afraid of losing control. I've seen at various
times in the Movement in which TMers get an idea in their heads that
a certain direction or fad is the best thing for your evolution
and they go into it in a big way. The first instance I ever saw of
this was back around '75 when a by-mail faith healer in Nebraska had
virtually every initiator in our center participating in her
cleansing programs...all backed up by an obscure rumor that MMY
approved.

Let's say the TMO reconciles in the manner suggested above. There
are bound to be those who are affiliated with a guru such as SSRS
who offer such an appealing benefit -- proximity and personal
contact with a guru -- that TMers, being the sheep that they are,
will FLOCK to him.

So I reject the party line that these other teachings conflict
with TM and TM-Sidhi practise (as I've said umpteen times here, no
activity freely chosen by a TMer conflicts with their TM
Program)...it is a question of control AND control of the
finite guru money that would be available to the TMO under those
circumstances.

[FairfieldLife] Bush Given Early Warning on Terror Plot

2006-08-11 Thread Bhairitu
President Bush had been briefed over the last few days about the
thwarted airline plot underway in Britain, a White House spokesman said
today — especially as the action by the Brits (to interrupt the plot)
became more and more imminent,'' according to Tony Snow, the White House
press secretary.

Bush, who had gone to his Texas ranch for an 11-day working vacation,
had full briefings through the weekend'' on the matter, Snow said today.

Read the rest here:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/custom/newsroom/chi-060810bush-plot,0,607363.story

Told ya so.

BTW, did you notice the slick signs at the airport. Those weren't
cranked out quickly on any inkjet printer. It would have taken days and
given government weeks. This shenanigan was planned way in advance.
Don't fall for it.

Also did you know that according to FEMA and Homeland Security a Red
Alert includes martial law. Screw that!

So you are continuing to speculate.

These thorny questions that bedevil most people
are no problem for Shemp. He just defines his

case, he defines as nut cases those who continue
to speculate, and reasonable people as those
 who accept the Official Version.

 I mean, that's really convincing, isn't it?

For Shemp...

Hey, I realize not everyone is into neuroscience the way I am, but the Google

Well, no, there was no proof beyond a shadow of a

He's been researching the assassination for 30 years.
He doesn't claim to have proved there was a

I haven't looked at or had the time to look at the links you kindly

No need to backpedal, Shemp. This nut case

I thought they just aborted them It's pretty
high-tech to be able to tell the sex of an unborn.
Is there some reason Chinese wouldn't have that tech? India
does. India has the same problem of women getting ultra sound and
aborting female fetuses, but of course, it's a woman's right to
choose. Women in those societies want sons that will be able to take
care of them in their old age.???You think that women don't take care
of their moms? But I would imagine in those cultures
there probably some low tech ways of telling if a fetus is male or
female, astrology, holding a pendulum over the abdomen and watching
which way it swings, reading tea leaves or palms.Sigh.
Ultrasound is an expensive procedure for someone living in a 3rd world village
and even in China, its not something that everyone could afford to do, I'm
guessing. Even in the USA, you have to have big bucks (relatively
speaking) or insurance or a charity insitutite in order to get proper
unborn health care and not everyone has access to that.

Women in Cultures like China and India are lucky to have somebody take care
of them let alone look after their mothers. Every mother in those Asian
countries wants a son to look after them in their old age. Parents tend to live
with a son in their old age, rarely do they go to the son in laws house to live
because the son in law will be expected to take care of his parents. Ultra
sound is not expensive in countries like China or India many clinics have them
especially with the demand to know if the coming child is male or female.
Remember India and China have socialized medicine.

THREE ideas:1. Genuine, good, spiritual experiences: if the people on the
current course
are actually having great experiences (as the conferences calls would have you
believe),
and they talk about this when they return home, and they genuinely appear to be
doing
well as a result, then more people will attend the next course. People want
this.
2. Devotion/bhakti - there seems so little of this left in the TMO - people
are distrustful,
have had money weasled out of them, etc etc etc. As a result, their hearts no
longer flow
with love and devotion so easily, altho most wish they still had that innocent
flow of love
to MMY. People want to feel some devotion again, and they want to avoid being
disappoitned or hurt, so they stay away. I would guess that having puja each
day, doing
some outward ceremonies in additon to all the program stuff, would help people
want to
return. Mostly, they would need to feel welcomed, appreciated, and loved.
Hopefully, the
good experiences and the kindness and honestywould allow for devotion to grow.
3. Maybe fewer words from Bevan and John? I don't know how the current course
is
going, but I find the overanlysis and wordiness of the meetings in the past to
be tiresome.
I would rather have the lectures shorter and less hyped in style - simple,
honest words
that still convey the good stuff. I could listen to pundits chant for hours,
but not Bevan
and John.

How long had you been with her? Care to enumerate some of the symptoms of her brainwashing?

I calmly said to her the other day I thought he (Maharishi) was a liar
a cheat and a fruad. I thought she was going to kill me. I have never

Are you sure thats the only reason she was angry?

In my opinion, if you want to know the truth of the matter, or move in that general direction, you have to strive for a nuanced perspective. If you say hes a liar a cheat and a fraud or hes the greatest saint who ever walked the earth youre pitching your tent on an extreme end of the spectrum. As Ive said here often (but you wouldnt know that because you just joined) the natural world, including people, is a complex mix of various and often paradoxical qualities and tendencies. It is rare if not impossible to find a person or thing that is predominantly characterized by a single quality or set of like qualities. Even examples such as Hitler or Mother Theresa support this contention. So yes, Maharishi is a liar. He has also spoken a lot of truth. Hes a cheat, but he has generously given far more than the average person. Hes a fraud, but judging from the benefits many have derived from his teachings, hes the real deal. And also, of course, Im all those things too. And you are. We all possess all qualities in various measures and degrees of manifestation. Youll find a lot in the files section and in the archives (Doug Hamilton posts an index periodically) that is quite damning. But most of Maharishis staunchest critics acknowledge that their lives have benefited tremendously from meditation, and that they had wonderful adventures and experiences with Maharishi and in his service. Maharishi is an extraordinary man who has had a profound influence on many people and on the culture at large. He is also, in some respects, an ordinary man who has carefully concealed his ordinariness in order to portray and preserve a public image. Much has been revealed in recent years, and more will be revealed after he dies. But I hope and predict that history will view him with a balanced perspective, as it has Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson, and other great men who had their fair share of human foibles.

Hard-core 25-year meditator, and she still had a trifle of an anger
problem, you say? Well, just think of what she might have been like

Experiences like that are, unfortunately, why most of us are on longer

This is really so true, Rick, and despite my humorous (I think)

Perhaps, but the social issue is overwhelming the individual rights
in this case. The individual's right to choose is leading to
exceedingly lopsided male-female ratios that may
well destroy Chinese and Indian society if left unregulated.

I don't know how the heck you'd regulate it. Ban
the aborting of female fetuses but not male? How
long would it be before you had an imbalance the
  other way?

Ban anything that can be used to determine the sex of the fetus. Ultrasound
 while the
mom isn't allowed to look, would be OK, as long as the doctor doesn't reveal
 the sex.

Why not just ban abortion all together?

Yeah, in a country like China. That will work..

 Hey, that might actually work.

What about the mothers right to know?

What about it?
