 Original Message

Hi All,

I know this is a major shot in the dark, but here goes: I was contacted
by a woman who took a friendly stray female kitten to the vet, after the
cat sustained a leg injury. The combo test showed Feleuk positive.
This is a (reportedly) sweet short-hair gray tabby, with golden eyes.
They are estimating the cat, named Cupcake, is about six months old.
She is not spayed, and has not gone into heat yet. The woman feels
unable to take the cat into her own home, as she has other kitties, even
though they have been vaccinated for feleuk. She has paid for the leg
injury to be sutured and cared for, and for the week-long boarding at
the vet's office. Cupcake is at Danny King's Bellevue Animal Hospital.
The woman can't afford to keep paying for boarding, and plans to have
the cat euthanized on Tuesday, after she takes her daughter over to say
good-bye to the cat. So we're looking at sometime around 3:00pm or so.
If anyone has any leads,or is able to take this little girl, please
*call* me at 615-662-2386 ASAP. Leave a message if I don't answer.
The woman has already called all the Bellevue-area animal hospitals, and
looked on PetFinder.com for rescues that are listing Feleuk cats in the
area--there are none. I did suggest that she call Chris at the Cat
Shoppe tomorrow, in case Chris knows of anyone who might take the
kitty. Any suggestions or offers of help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Katherine

PS. Those of you who are outside of Nashville or Tennessee (Hi, Tad!)
are being contacted on the off-chance that you may know someone from the
'Net in this area who might be able to help.

I've never had any luck with the plug ins..always use the sprays. They
work in a more concentrated area instead of trying to do the whole house/room.

The toaster oven is NOT safe UNLESS you remember to ALWAYS close

my new kitten last year who had a corneal ulcer, 500

Wendy: giardia

2007-05-29 Thread Jane Lyons

Wendy I think that giardia is most often contracted from
contaminated water.
I found MeMe through a photo on Petfinders. It was two months
after NoNo died and there was something about her face that
struck a cord. I called the 'shelter' and was told that she was just
getting over an upper respiratory and was an abandoned kitten who
had been with her for 4 months.
We (my husband) and I drove 7 hours to what turned out to be a
private home in which there were well over 100 cats. We were so stunned
and so unable to breathe that we simply picked her up from a bed where
she
was sleeping with at least 40 other cats, signed a form, paid a fee,
and left

without breathing.
I had spoken to the woman on the telephone several times before we
decided
to make the trip. She said that she had been tested for FeLV and was
negative but
had the remnants of an upper respiratory. She said she was treating her
for diarrhea

as a result of the antibiotic. What we encountered was a total shock.
We took her to our local (allopathic) vet who was horrified at her
condition (stomatitis
giardia, ringworm and chronic sneezing). She tested negative for FIV
and Bartonella

and was not tested for FeLIV because I said she was negative.
Her progress has been the (almost) elimination of sneezing and
ringworm. The first
giardia treatment did not work, so our homeopath is working on another
treatment.

That is MeMe's story. She is affectionate and confident and has become
the alpha member of our
pack of two Scottish Terriers. She bonded with them instantly and they
seem so happy to

have her.

I'm writing into the ethers, just to make this real.

I use the l-lysine from a health food store, the powder inside a capsule,
250-500 mg once a day. It's an amino acid and is water soluble so any excess
is excreted in the urine. Hard to OD on l-lysine.

on the other side of things- my husband and I saved a kitty and she is now
part of the family- I named her Carrie Bradshaw from sex and the city as she
has wild full hair like the main character- she is a maine coon cat. My dogs
who I was worried about, love her- they smell her butt and my tibetian terrier
mix I have found kissing her. We got her from a shelter here- I suspect that
whoever gave her up before we got her might have been abusive- as she shys away
from getting touched in the face- and the vet said they found a broken tooth on
her- but she is having a wonderful time now- she loves my husband and I tease
him and say that he is mr.big- she insists on getting in his office and into
his heart. He closed the office door and she put her paw under the door- and
wiggles it meowing, demanding to be with him- it is very cute.
Shes not satine, and I do miss satine- but it feels natural to have a kitty
again ^_^

OT: Neighbor threatens ferals

2007-05-29 Thread Stray Cat Alliance
Do you believe this storyevery day, I feed my front yard and back yard cats
(I love in a townhome attached on both sides)..and have done so since we moved
into the City in 1998. Last May my elderly neighbor moved out (she was pet
friendly and had volunteered at the Humane Society) and new neighbors moved in
(no pets).

Over the weekend, I was cleaning out my backyard house of straw from winter and
the husband neighbor came over and said a cat was pooping in the landing of his
basement steps. I said I feed only stray cats and you can't control where they
go as you can't control the birds pooping where they want. He said you don't
walk in bird poop. But in any case, I said to let me think about the situation
as it never happened before. So I went in and got a plastic bag and cleaned up
the poop as I didn't want any problems. Funny that noone ever pooped in our
landing but ours smells a lot better - not that musty yuck smell.

Then that night, in the middle of the night, I realized the one thing that
changed was my husband put stone along the only grassy section in the backyard.
In the morning, I asked my husband to move the stones as I figured that would
probably make it stop if it was indeed a cat/s.

Then, the door bell rings and my neighbor wants to speak to my husband. Of
course, it was about the cats. My husband said it might not be a cat/s, there
are skunks and possums. And just to put some wood out to block the cat/s or
animal/s from going down the steps to the landing.

Then the neighbor says if it doesn't stop he's going to kill them! Then my
husband said he couldn't do that or he'd go to jail -- and my husband said then
he didn't have time to argue about it and came in.

Now, I am worried about the kitties! I would love to take still somewhat feral
Mom cat (tho she lets me pet her) from the front inside but I have way too many
cats and doubt she'd appreciate it. If we ever move, she is definitely coming.

Every year shelters kill almost 5,000,000 cats, dogs, puppies kittens. Most
were beautiful, loving creatures (even feral cats!) that died simply because
they did not have a home. Every puppy or kitten born costs a shelter animal
its life. Save lives, spay-neuter, support Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) adopt for

Jenna,

What a wonderful tribute to Satine that you brought
another kitty home to love. And what a lucky kitty!
Hoping for many happy and healthy years to come with
your new addition. And I'm with you...when I was
single, any guy that didn't like my cats was history.
Package deal, like you said.

 Satine alive.

on the other side of things- my husband and I
saved a kitty and she is now part of the family- I
named her Carrie Bradshaw from sex and the city as
she has wild full hair like the main character- she
is a maine coon cat. My dogs who I was worried
about, love her- they smell her butt and my tibetian
terrier mix I have found kissing her. We got her
from a shelter here- I suspect that whoever gave her
up before we got her might have been abusive- as she
shys away from getting touched in the face- and the
vet said they found a broken tooth on her- but she
is having a wonderful time now- she loves my husband
and I tease him and say that he is mr.big- she
insists on getting in his office and into his heart.
He closed the office door and she put her paw under
the door- and wiggles it meowing, demanding to be
with him- it is very cute.
Shes not satine, and I do miss satine- but it
feels natural to have a kitty again ^_^

Some in our group have had great luck using Elavil for cats that pee
inappropriately. I think the way it was done, was to give it orally
(or use ear cream) for 2 weeks, then gradually reduce it (like every
other day) until the behavior showed up again, then administer as
appropriate (weekly, daily, every two days, etc).

THey can treat toxo. It is treated with clindamycin (sp?). They
haven't tested for it. It has to be sent out to a lab and it takes a

Re: OT: Neighbor threatens ferals

2007-05-29 Thread wendy
Anita,

I'm so sorry. That stinks that your new neighbor is
being a jerk. Saying you're going to kill an animal
is very serious and cruel. Is it an option for you to
speak with the wife when he is not home? Maybe she
doesn't know that he did this. Also, could you talk
to the ferals the next time you feed them and explain
the situation and tell them that this guys is
dangerous. Maybe that would help. If this situation
gets more serious, there are options, like calling a
shelter to have the ferals trapped and moved to
someplace safe, or calling the aspca on this guy.
Prayers going out that his heart would soften and that
the kitties stay out of his path.

Over the weekend, I was cleaning out my backyard
house of straw from winter and the husband neighbor
came over and said a cat was pooping in the landing
of his basement steps. I said I feed only stray cats
and you can't control where they go as you can't
control the birds pooping where they want. He said
you don't walk in bird poop. But in any case, I said
to let me think about the situation as it never

Then that night, in the middle of the night, I
realized the one thing that changed was my husband
put stone along the only grassy section in the
backyard. In the morning, I asked my husband to move
the stones as I figured that would probably make it
stop if it was indeed a cat/s.

Then, the door bell rings and my neighbor wants to
speak to my husband. Of course, it was about the
cats. My husband said it might not be a cat/s, there
are skunks and possums. And just to put some wood
out to block the cat/s or animal/s from going down
 the steps to the landing.

Then the neighbor says if it doesn't stop he's going
to kill them! Then my husband said he couldn't do
that or he'd go to jail -- and my husband said then
he didn't have time to argue about it and came in.

Now, I am worried about the kitties! I would love to
take still somewhat feral Mom cat (tho she lets me
pet her) from the front inside but I have way too
many cats and doubt she'd appreciate it. If we ever
 move, she is definitely coming.

Re: OT: Neighbor threatens ferals

2007-05-29 Thread Nina

Hey Anita,
This is one of my worst nightmares. The apathy in my less than
desirable neighborhood causes my overcrowded rescue efforts, but it also
has the benefit of protecting me from just this sort of thing. I know
how distasteful this suggestion is going to sound, but I think your best
bet is to muster the stomach to appease this horrible new neighbor of
yours. People like this are desperate for attention. Give it to him!
If I were you, I'd go over there and tell him that even though these
animals are strays, you love them and feel responsible for them. Let
him know you understand why he's upset and, if he'll let you, tell him
what you are planing to do to rectify the situation. Ask him to allow
you a time frame to see if your ideas are working, (maybe a month).
Don't make suggestions about what he could do, ask him to let you do
these things FOR him. Clean out his landing, spray cat-be-gone
products, block the entrance, pour wood chips in any area that looks
like a cat might use to relieve themselves. Enlist his help by asking
him to let you know if he spots any cats on his property and to call you
so you can come and clean up any messes they make. I would tell him
you are sorry that you got off on the wrong foot and maybe even
apologize for my husband's rudeness, (very difficult to do, I know). In
short kiss this guy's ass! Believe me, I understand how hard this might
be to do, but you have to think of the end result. You don't want him
calling animal control, and you certainly don't want him putting poison
down for your unsuspecting cats. Nip this feud in the bud, it's not
about you, it's about the safety of your babies. I would figure out
some sort of enclosure if you can and start trapping asap. I'm sorry
this has happened. Please let us know how it is going,

Nina

RE: OT: Neighbor threatens ferals

2007-05-29 Thread Rosenfeldt, Diane
Anita --

As Nina will attest, over on the feral_cats yahoogroup this is referred
to as being vanilla and has been proven as one of the best ways to
deal with ignorant and/or hostile people. Hard as it is, maybe it IS
just a case of getting off on the wrong foot, maybe when not assailed,
as he would consider it, by cat poop and made to feel defensive about it
this guy is actually a nice person. Or he could be a total waste of
skin. But either way, maybe you can win him over and keep your kidlets
safe. Possibly, he may even tell people, hey, I've got these *cat*
people living next door -- but they seem to be okay. Although it
doesn't sound to me like your husband was actually *being* rude -- I
know how *I* would respond to I'll kill your cats -- it would be cool
to defuse the hostility and have neighbors you can actually stand. Do
you think it would be possible for both of you to bring over a welcome
plate of cookies or something, and tell them you'd like to sit down and
discuss all the stuff Nina mentioned? You could mention in a
non-accusatory way that the other neighbor liked the cats so it may take
you a little while to figure out what to do, and ask them to bear with
you.

Oh, and document everything. For now, write down the date and content
of the conversations you and your husband have had with the neighbor
already. Write down what you initially did to placate the guy. And
later, even if your vanilla meeting goes well, write down everything
that is said and all the actions you subsequently take. And continue to
document any interactions between the cats and the neighbors. That way
if, God forbid, something does happen to your cats, you'll have
something to show the cops about the situation. I really really hope it
doesn't come to that. Best of luck. I've had crappy neighbors in my
time, and know how worrisome that can be.

Hey Anita,
This is one of my worst nightmares.
Please let us know how it is going,
Nina

Re: Virbagen Omega..Lance?

2007-05-29 Thread Nina

Hi Jane,
Tell your vet to contact my specialty clinic about the Interferon
Omega. It's been a while, but hopefully Michelle Rose is still there.
She was great about compiling an FDA packet for vets that wanted to
apply for special dispensation for it. (It has been approved for
veterinary use in Europe, but not in the US). I'm sure they would be
happy to answer any questions about it's use. Here's the paste from the
email I wrote about contacting them:

For anyone interested in starting the process of obtaining Feline
Interferon, (Virbagen Omega)...

My vet's liaison, Michelle Rose, at Veterinary Medical and Surgical
Group in Ventura CA (805-339-2290)has made an FDA packet that she will
fax out to anyone's vet who is interested in starting the special
dispensation process. She says everything they need to know will be in
there, and of course they can call her if there are further questions.
Since only vets can apply, only they, or their offices should call. If
she's not available, have your vet leave their voice and fax numbers on
her voice mail. If you have any trouble, email me directly and I'll call
her.

In the meantime, (or if you decide not to acquire the IO, it's very
expensive), you might want to start MeMe on oral Interferon Alpha. IA
is used to boost immune response in humans suffering with cancer and
does seem to have some benefits for our kits as well. IO is suspected
to be more beneficial, (it's derived from feline dna, rather than
human), it's hoped that cats won't develop immunity to it's effects. My
vet also suspected that the oral might be beneficial for stomatitis as
well. It is inexpensive and readily available. There are several
different protocols used. Some people use a pulse protocol, (7 days
on 7 days off for example). I used to give it whenever my felv kids
were exhibiting symptoms. Usually the dose is 1cc daily, but I'd give
them up to 3cc when warranted. There is a ton of info about both
interferons in our archives.

Several list members have had good results with IR. Cindy used it subq,
(rather than the recommended IV), to alleviate unexplained fever
spikes. From what I understand about it, it's a bacteria that when
administered causes the immune system to kick in against it and
theoretically battle whatever is causing symptoms.

I could have a CT scan done, which would rule brain cancer in or out,
but I don't see much reason to do that since brain cancer cannot be
treated.

We could test for toxo, but he says he's never seen a cat w/toxo that
came from Texas - he's only seen one and that cat came from out of
state. She's on the clinical dose to treat toxo.

That leaves dry FIP.

She *is* getting better, though she's not normal.

Re: Wendy: giardia

2007-05-29 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
As I recall, giardia is hard to see, sometimes because it has
different stages so it can be a pain. Bless MeMe's little heart--you
got her outta there! Bless your hearts, too. What a story! My Lili
had a bg patch of ringworm on her very tiny self and we all got
it--just tiny patches but it seemed to be a self-limiting strain and
everyone (including Lili) lost it quite rapidly with treatment (we
had ringworm stuff from the traditional vet--and I used it, too!
Auntie Dr. Val and vet tech Linda said,You did? And I said, I'm a

getting over an upper respiratory and was an abandoned kitten who
had been with her for 4 months.
We (my husband) and I drove 7 hours to what turned out to be a
private home in which there were well over 100 cats. We were so
stunned
and so unable to breathe that we simply picked her up from a bed
where she
was sleeping with at least 40 other cats, signed a form, paid a
fee, and left

without breathing.
I had spoken to the woman on the telephone several times before we
decided
to make the trip. She said that she had been tested for FeLV and
was negative but
had the remnants of an upper respiratory. She said she was treating
her for diarrhea

as a result of the antibiotic. What we encountered was a total shock.
We took her to our local (allopathic) vet who was horrified at her
condition (stomatitis
giardia, ringworm and chronic sneezing). She tested negative for
FIV and Bartonella

and was not tested for FeLIV because I said she was negative.
Her progress has been the (almost) elimination of sneezing and
ringworm. The first
giardia treatment did not work, so our homeopath is working on
another treatment.

That is MeMe's story. She is affectionate and confident and has

you don't get anymore replies, I used to give Smookie,
my new kitten last year who had a corneal ulcer, 500
mg 2x per day. Some will probaby say that's a lot,

six months old at that point and at least 5 lbs. I
would not give that much to one as small as you have.
Hopefully, you'll get more info. on this. Also, make
sure that the lysine does not have the additive
propynol glycol. It causes blood issues in cats.

Re: OT: Neighbor threatens ferals

2007-05-29 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
First of all, call the police and animal control and report each and
every confrontation you have had with these people, time and date and
what your neighbor has said. We have creep neighbors who trap cats
and release them miles away and apparently also kill them in our
lovely university suburb. The animal control people AND the police
are concerned and have both spoken with them more than once. When
told that trapping animals was illegal he got a state permit. They
say that the cats steal the fish out of their fish pond. More likely
the raccoons. My mother lost cats before we found out what was going
on. Once she was looking for hewr old scared white boy and she found
him in their garage. They got mad at her for going in there to find
him. He later disappeared along with the cutest, tiniest little
feral black cat and his little feral mommy. The best we can legally
do is to watch their backyard to be sure there is no havahart trap
back there. So did one of our neighbors who feeds ferals and, (as an
aside) also has about ten indoor cats AND the cleanest, most perfect
house I've ever seen. It just shines!

He drove my mom's old cat 25 miles away and let him out in a forest
preserve. The only reason we got him back two long weeks later was
because he was living under a lady's deck and the lady took him to a
vet to see that he was healthy before she adopted him because he was
such a nice old kitty and I had microchipped him for my mom. But I
certainly feel the nightmare of losing the others.

I always tell people about these creeps. If I see a cat out and he
has a tag I always call the people and tell them about these people.
It's so disgusting. I hate it!

Then the neighbor says if it doesn't stop he's going to kill them!
Then my husband said he couldn't do that or he'd go to jail -- and
my husband said then he didn't have time to argue about it and came

tell him that even though these animals are strays, you love them
and feel responsible for them. Let him know you understand why
he's upset and, if he'll let you, tell him what you are planing to
do to rectify the situation. Ask him to allow you a time frame to
see if your ideas are working, (maybe a month). Don't make
suggestions about what he could do, ask him to let you do these
things FOR him. Clean out his landing, spray cat-be-gone products,
block the entrance, pour wood chips in any area that looks like a
cat might use to relieve themselves. Enlist his help by asking
him to let you know if he spots any cats on his property and to
call you so you can come and clean up any messes they make. I
would tell him you are sorry that you got off on the wrong foot and
maybe even apologize for my husband's rudeness, (very difficult to
do, I know). In short kiss this guy's ass! Believe me, I
understand how hard this might be to do, but you have to think of
the end result. You don't want him calling animal control, and you
certainly don't want him putting poison down for your unsuspecting
cats. Nip this feud in the bud, it's not about you, it's about the
safety of your babies. I would figure out some sort of enclosure
if you can and start trapping asap. I'm sorry this has happened.
Please let us know how it is going,

You need to get them used to eating and excreting on your property.

Try moving the food from the front of the house (a foot or two at a time) to
the back.

You may also want to put out a big litterbox. (I have an under-the-bed
plastic storage box that is the size of 3 normal litterboxes but I know someone
who uses a child's plastic wading pool instead.) You can fill it with the
pellets that are used for woodburning stoves. These are light, scoopable and
biodegradable. (You can also just find an area of your back yard and pour bags
of the wood stove pellets on the ground. That's how a friend dealt with
neighbors' complaints about her ferals.)

My vet's liaison, Michelle Rose, at Veterinary Medical and Surgical

will

fax out to anyone's vet who is interested in starting the special

Since only vets can apply, only they, or their offices should
call. If
she's not available, have your vet leave their voice and fax
numbers on
her voice mail. If you have any trouble, email me directly and I'll
call

her.

In the meantime, (or if you decide not to acquire the IO, it's very
expensive), you might want to start MeMe on oral Interferon Alpha.
IA is used to boost immune response in humans suffering with cancer
and does seem to have some benefits for our kits as well. IO is
suspected to be more beneficial, (it's derived from feline dna,
rather than human), it's hoped that cats won't develop immunity to
it's effects. My vet also suspected that the oral might be
beneficial for stomatitis as well. It is inexpensive and readily
available. There are several different protocols used. Some
people use a pulse protocol, (7 days on 7 days off for example).
I used to give it whenever my felv kids were exhibiting symptoms.
Usually the dose is 1cc daily, but I'd give them up to 3cc when
warranted. There is a ton of info about both interferons in our
archives.

Several list members have had good results with IR. Cindy used it
subq, (rather than the recommended IV), to alleviate unexplained
fever spikes. From what I understand about it, it's a bacteria
that when administered causes the immune system to kick in against
it and theoretically battle whatever is causing symptoms.

Since only vets can apply, only they, or their offices should
call. If
she's not available, have your vet leave their voice and fax

her voice mail. If you have any trouble, email me directly and I'll

RE: Killing cats who pee on RUGS*****

2007-05-29 Thread Melissa Lind
Hi All,

I haven't been able to respond lately since I've been super busy, but I had
to read this pee thread--it hits close to home. Our Bandit started peeing in
the heat vent--only one vent--for no apparent reason. We tried every natural
remedy we could think of to change the behavior. While I agree that they are
doing it on purpose much of the time, I also think that it results from
anxiety oftentimes, not a sense of vengeance or naughtiness or
vindictiveness. Our vet suggested Prozac (fluoxitine). For $6.00 a month,
Bandit receives a half a pill a day, and I'm not kidding--overnight he
stopped peeing in the vent (or on the plastic covering the vent).

I swear by this stuff. It didn't change his attitude or anything that I can
tell--only his reactions to stress. Our vet said we may not ever know what
was stressing him out, but at least now Bandit is back to his old self. Our
vet said that not many people would have kept a cat like him (most would put
him to sleep). That just horrified me.

Then I used some of Bandit's Prozac on Cassidy (the FeLV+ who just went to
Best Friends) to stop his incessant howling at night. He was so sad--crying
all night long--after the Prozac he stopped crying immediately, but it
didn't change his behavior in other ways. He still talked and snuggled and
was just as fun as before.

So, I strongly recommend the Prozac, but I'm not a doctor, and I'm not as
experienced as half of you on this list, but that is my experience so far.
However, now I'm quite frightened about Best Friends. I'm going to write to
my contact there about this.

Re: Update on Kisa

2007-05-29 Thread C J
I brought Kisa home from the vet today. She's been fully hydrated and had a
nasal feeding tube in place, with the lovely lampshade around her neck. She is
still very lethargic/depressed, but a little more alert and her eyes look
better. We're still no closer to a proper diagnosis though, because she is too
weak to undergo surgery to obtain a biopsy of her liver.

At the vet, she wasn't vomiting much at all, but once I got her home and fed
her 30cc of liquid food, followed by 5 cc of water, she promptly vomited it all
up. I gaver her another 20cc after that.

Two hours later, I gave her another 30 ccand...well she vomited up her
feeding tube shortly thereafter. She vomited up so much, that she must have
had most of that 20cc from 2 hrs earlier in her belly still. What a nightmare.

I guess we go back to the vet tomorrow to get another tube put insigh. The
vet said we can try metachlopromide (or however its spelled) if she vomits
alot, so I suppose that will be the next thing we have to try.

We really need a break here. Her only chance is to get healthy enough just
from feeding and giving the doxycycline so that we can hopefully do a biopsy.

Well, after going to the vet today, it's not looking good for Kisa.

She has elevated bilirubin in her blood/urine, and elevated number of
lymphocytes. Therefore they believe she has a liver disease, possibly
lymphosarcoma.

The only way they can tell for sure what the problem is with her liver is to
do a biopsy which means surgery. They didn't suggest doing this though
because of the FeLV and her immune system being compromised.

They gave me prednisone and baytril for her, though i'm really not sure how
she'll handle keeping those down when she is vomiting so easily. They're
hoping the steroid will make her feel a little better and maybe regain some
appetite.

I've really got to try and get her to eat something, she hasn't eaten since
Saturday night now.

I don't understand why this is all happening at once. First I watched Tomi
get sicker and sicker for nearly 2 months. As soon as he started getting
better, Koda got sick with kidney and liver failure, and died. Now, barely a
week later Kisa goes from being a super healthy and active cat to death's door.
I haven't even had enough time to get used to Koda being gone, now its another
crisis situation.

This is all after having nothing but healthy, happy, and active cats for 12
years.

I used to think how awful it would be if my house burned down while I was
away and my 5 cats were inside. What is happening now is almost worse than
that since it is so prolonged and i'm beginning to wonder if something I am
doing is causing all this (like feeding raw food). I've always kept my cats
indoors because I didn't want them to get run over by a car, etcbut they
seem to be no safer indoors.

Sorry for venting on you all, its just really starting to affect me, both
emotionally and financially.

Re: Cassandra: Re: Hemobart

2007-05-29 Thread Pam Norman

Cassandra,

When you go back tomorrow, you might ask them to give her at least 150
ml of subqs to make for the fluids she's lost in the vomiting. Have
them teach you how to do it too get your supplied with the fluids, the
IV setup needles. This is something you need to be able to do at home
for her.

If the vet wants to try the Metroclopramide, have him do the
injectable. The pills may just come up again. The injectable is
something you can do too. Have him just make up the dose in prepared
needles.

Hemoibart does affect the liver among other things. It's a nasty nasty
bug. And as someone else has said, it's very hard to catch on a blood
smear because one minute it is there the next it is not. BUT
regardless Kisa MUST be on the doxy for at least 3 more weeks. So it is
crucial to get the vomiting under control --- because of
hydration, because of getting the doxy down. If she can't take the doxy,
then she's going to get anemic again right away with hemobart that HCT
will go down to life-threatening levels very quickly. If she's not
vomiting at the vet's, then I think y ou might consider leaving her
there until things stabilize.

Re: Update on Kisa

2007-05-29 Thread Taylor Scobie Humphrey
Metaclopramide should work beautifully. Oh, Lord, vomiting up her
feeding tube, yuck. Poor baby! 35cc seems like a lot of food all at
once but I know she needs a certain amount every day just to stay
even. They said that much? Maybe it was too cold or too warm or too
fast. I've done tube feeding (with a tube down the throat through
the neck) and that was equally awful. It didn't seem to want to go
down into her tummy and would just come right back up and out around
the bandage on her neck. It was a totally awful experience all the
way around.

We'll be praying for your little one tonight and tomorrow.

I brought Kisa home from the vet today. She's been fully hydrated
and had a nasal feeding tube in place, with the lovely lampshade
around her neck. She is still very lethargic/depressed, but a
little more alert and her eyes look better. We're still no closer
to a proper diagnosis though, because she is too weak to undergo
surgery to obtain a biopsy of her liver.

At the vet, she wasn't vomiting much at all, but once I got her
home and fed her 30cc of liquid food, followed by 5 cc of water,
she promptly vomited it all up. I gaver her another 20cc after that.

Two hours later, I gave her another 30 ccand...well she vomited
up her feeding tube shortly thereafter. She vomited up so much,
that she must have had most of that 20cc from 2 hrs earlier in her
belly still. What a nightmare.

I guess we go back to the vet tomorrow to get another tube put
insigh. The vet said we can try metachlopromide (or however
its spelled) if she vomits alot, so I suppose that will be the next
thing we have to try.

We really need a break here. Her only chance is to get healthy
enough just from feeding and giving the doxycycline so that we can
hopefully do a biopsy.

Subject: Update on Kisa

Well, after going to the vet today, it's not looking good for Kisa.

She has elevated bilirubin in her blood/urine, and elevated number
of lymphocytes. Therefore they believe she has a liver disease,
possibly lymphosarcoma.

The only way they can tell for sure what the problem is with her
liver is to do a biopsy which means surgery. They didn't suggest
doing this though because of the FeLV and her immune system being
compromised.

They gave me prednisone and baytril for her, though i'm really not
sure how she'll handle keeping those down when she is vomiting so
easily. They're hoping the steroid will make her feel a little
better and maybe regain some appetite.

I've really got to try and get her to eat something, she hasn't
eaten since Saturday night now.

I don't understand why this is all happening at once. First I
watched Tomi get sicker and sicker for nearly 2 months. As soon as
he started getting better, Koda got sick with kidney and liver
failure, and died. Now, barely a week later Kisa goes from being a
super healthy and active cat to death's door. I haven't even had
enough time to get used to Koda being gone, now its another crisis
situation.

This is all after having nothing but healthy, happy, and active
cats for 12 years.

I used to think how awful it would be if my house burned down while
I was away and my 5 cats were inside. What is happening now is
almost worse than that since it is so prolonged and i'm beginning
to wonder if something I am doing is causing all this (like feeding
raw food). I've always kept my cats indoors because I didn't want
them to get run over by a car, etcbut they seem to be no safer
indoors.

Sorry for venting on you all, its just really starting to affect
me, both emotionally and financially.

Re: Cassandra: Re: Hemobart

Can Cassandra inject the metaclopramide into the port close to the
needle when she is giving little Kisa her subQ fluids? It would save
them both from another stick.

Good idea abt leaving her with the vet maybe.

Cassandra,

When you go back tomorrow, you might ask them to give her at least
150 ml of subqs to make for the fluids she's lost in the vomiting.
Have them teach you how to do it too get your supplied with the
fluids, the IV setup needles. This is something you need to be
able to do at home for her.

If the vet wants to try the Metroclopramide, have him do the
injectable. The pills may just come up again. The injectable is
something you can do too. Have him just make up the dose in
prepared needles.

Hemoibart does affect the liver among other things. It's a nasty
nasty bug. And as someone else has said, it's very hard to catch on
a blood smear because one minute it is there the next it is not.
BUT regardless Kisa MUST be on the doxy for at least 3 more weeks.
So it is crucial to get the vomiting under control ---
because of hydration, because of getting the doxy down. If she
can't take the doxy, then she's going to get anemic again right
away with hemobart that HCT will go down to life-threatening
levels very quickly. If she's not vomiting at the vet's, then I
think y ou might consider leaving her there until things stabilize.

It would be great if her liver issues were due to hemobart, but
i'm not sure it can cause all the issues she has. She had very
high lvls of bilirubin, but she wasn't anemic at all a week ago.
Her liver is enlarged as well, with some elevated liver enzymes,
and then there's the vomiting 2-4 times per day with zero appetite.

Possibly the hemobart jumped on the bandwagon this last week while
she's been weak and stressed, or hopefully it could be the cause
of some of her problems. It's really hard to say, but i'm
constantly praying that its not cancer and somehow the problem can
be dealt with.

Hey Cassandra,

I was reading up on hemobartanellosis right now, and
it says that it can cause jaundice, which is related
to the liver, I believe. Maybe that's what's causing
the liver issues?! I sure hope so. Thank goodness
they found the hemobart, because it is VERY hard to
diagnose. Half the time, they can't see the little
buggers on the slide under a microscope. If she pulls
through this, we need to make a note for later in case
we see this again.

Praying that her liver issues are related to the
hemobart...

:)
