[Felvtalk] News about Ginger

2012-02-07 Thread botha . marinda4
My vet ordered Interferon and Cyproheptadine. The vet suspects leukemia is
already in kitty's bone marrow. Ginger kitty refuses to eat his food but tried
to eat his cat litter last night. What should I do? Euthanasia? I can't see my
darling suffer like this! Marinda

Re: [Felvtalk] News about Ginger

2012-02-07 Thread Terri Brown
First -- I'm sorry you had to find us, but I'm glad you're here.

Please try to remain as calm as possible and don't panic. Ginger will pick up
on that -- he might get stressed out if you're freaking out and that won't help
him. (hugs)

Only you can decide if it's time to let him go. No one can make that decision
for you -- you and Ginger kitty have to decide that. If he's ready to go, you
will know.

Try something smelly -- anchovy paste maybe.the juice from a can of
tuna..see if he will take that. If he continues to refuse food, he could
get worse. More than 72 hours without food and the damage could be
irreversible.

My very first experience with FeLV: my cat was diagnosed on 10/25/1999 and I
had to put her to sleep the very next day. That's how I came to find this
list. She was so sick with the anemia that to keep her alive would have been
cruel. But some cats pull out of it -- some don't. Depends on the cat. My
one FeLV+ cat lived to be 9-1/2 years old. So some of them have a good life.
I don't give up on them until the kitty tells me that they are tired and are
ready to go. If you think Ginger wants to fight, then give him the chance.

We have ALL been where you are. This is an ugly disease.

Hoping with you that Ginger pulls out of this

[Felvtalk] Feeding with syringe!

2012-02-07 Thread GRAS
I'm sorry if I missed any latest info, but has the vet seen Ginger kitty
yet? Has he given any supportive treatment like at least some
sub-q fluids?
If you haven't fed a cat with a syringe, technique is important. I always
gave the cat sitting on my lap or to my side, holding the head from under
the chin, slightly up (cat can be wrapped in a towel if difficult to hold),
inserting the syringe from the SIDE of the mouth (NOT front), squeezing in a
small amount and allowing the cat to swallow, and continue with tiny
amounts. No sense squeezing in a lot if food only to have the cat spit it
out. The food has to be mushy enough to easily get through the tip of
syringe. Here, we have Hill's Science Diet A=D, which is high caloric for
sick and recuperating cats.

Here's some info on syringe feeding:
http://www.goodsearch.com/search.aspx?keywords=How+to+feed+cat+with+syringe
Videos on syringe feeding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9ygsA93vQc ,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6o17wH6ujk

Eating litter can mean many things, usually because something is missing in
their diet, some kind of nutritional imbalance, which would be quite
understandable in a sick cat.

2012-02-07 Thread Lynda Wilson
Amen, Terri! That's the best advice to give. And yes, we have all experienced
this horrible disease. Same happened to my kitten I adopted through my local
humane society. He never showed signs of being sick (except for some very loose
stools sometimes) and tested negative (but I think they tested him too early).
Anyway, one day he was fine, and the second day I was putting him to rest. He
was in very bad shape and I could see it in his eyes. He was only 9 mos old.
Next month will be a year since he was laid to rest. He was an orange flame
kitten, long - haired and beautiful!!!

Again, only you can decide if it's Ginger's time, but please do not let him
suffer.

My heart aches for both of you!

Re: [Felvtalk] News about Ginger

2012-02-07 Thread Marcia Baronda
I know this sounds completely off subject, but there is a ton of information on
Tanya's CRF website about what to do for cats that aren't eating. This info,
although is provided for cats with CRF, can be used for any cat that isn't
eating. I would also recommend a b complex supplement. It will stimulate
appetite, and cats lose b vitamins during times of stress. What did your vet
say concerning euthanasia? Some won't say anymore. I will be thinking of you
and Ginger. My heart goes out to you 3

Hi, I am new to all of this. My cat Oliver had the PCR after testing positive
with the ELISA. Sadly, he tested positive after getting the PCR test. He is a
6 year old Siamese. My vet had a chat with some hoity toity vet either at
Davis or Cornell who said that it was more accurate.

Everyone else in the house tested negative and just had their booster shots.
Follow up blood work for all is in Mid March.

Thanks for all of the info here!

Hi
I just have to be totally honest here so that you and Ginger don't go through
what my little Fletch went through. I didn't make it to the vet on time. Fletch
died in his crate while I was racing to get him there to stop his suffering. He
died a horrible death, and I will never ever forget it. Now, none of us can see
your kitty, or what kind of shape it is in, but please, don't wait to long.
It's a hard decision because there IS hope for Felv cats. It's a fine line to
walk. And I think it's very hard, anymore, to find a vet who will actually tell
you to euthanize. My thoughts are with you. I'm so sorry you and Ginger have to
go through this.

Thanks, Natalie and all who responded. I've got Manny on prescription K/D dry
food, baby food meats and lots of water dishes all over the house. He's
probably close to 15 years old and has had CRF for several years. He's put on
some weight recently and I'm hopeful he'll be around a few more years. Lots of
love from this sweet, black cat!

2012-02-07 Thread Wendy
I have just signed up for felv talk and truly appreciate finding this group!
After fostering three kittens, our family decided to adopt them when we
received the results that all three were positive for feline leukemia.  We kept
all three and have one cat still with us who will turn five years old in May.
I tell you this to let you know that I have been where you are with Ginger
twice...in both situations, our kitties had severe anemia.  The first time, I
know that I let our little one suffer too long due to my difficulty letting her
go.  The second time, I knew when it was time to euthanize and was able to say
a peaceful and gentle goodbye.  I listened closely when our vet presented the
options.  As Marcia said, it's a fine line to walk because you want to do all
that you can do for your baby but you do not want to see him suffer.  I will
keep you and Ginger in my good thoughts and am so sorry about the situation.

[Felvtalk] Ginger; virus in bone marrow

2012-02-07 Thread Marta Gasper
.. I want to tell you what hapenned to us with our FeLV+ Jourdan. On Thurs vet
though virus was in the bone marrow. Sat she was very poor but she was holding
her own. By Mon one of her eyes looked very strange so I went to get things
ready to get her to vet, drove her there, less than 10 mts. We got her out of
carrier, set on table, when vet came in she reared her head up and stared at
them. Both her eyes were completly white, looked like something out of a horror
movie. Vet said the virus would have gotten in her brain and made her blind,
she was in lots of pain so we helped her along. But did I wish I had done it
before..
I'm not saying same will happen to Ginger but we don't know. If virus is in the
bone marrow it is very bad and she's really suffering. Whatever you do will be
the best decision
Sending a big hug

[Felvtalk] Smokey

2012-02-07 Thread cindy reasoner
It has been a very long time since I have posted anything. I first found this
site when my Smokey tested positive for feline leukemia. He had a hard time at
the beginning with fevers but we finally got that under control. He has gone
over 6 years with no problems or sickness. The other day I felt a very large
knot on his left front leg. I took him to the vet to get it checked out. He
thought it was probably cancer. He removed it today but he couldn't get all of
it. He described it as having tenticles going in all different directions. He
is sending it off to be sure it is cancer and what type. I have never dealt
with this before and Smokey's outlook seems pretty grave. Any opinions would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Would anyone with a cat or dog that has had cancer removed be interested in
a black salve that would get to the rest of the tentacles that the vet may
not have been able to remove? It's not expensive, but you would have to join
a group where you would get advice from people who have used it and lots of
moral support, too. It is for people and animals.there's also an herbal
tonic for cancer, you get the herbs, brew up the tonic, etc. REALLY WORKS!
In cases after surgery, the salve would be able to reach the interior
through the incisions.

2012-02-07 Thread Maureen Olvey

Depending on how far it has spread and whether it has metatisized, amputating
the leg might be an option. Cats and dogs do great on three legs. We had a
cat in our rescue recently who had to have her leg removed all the way up like
to the hip. They didn't leave a nub or anything. Looked like she had never
bee born with a leg. Kind of weird looking but you couldn't tell the
difference at all in how she acted and played. Actually she had had some pain
in her leg before they removed it so once it was gone then she felt even better
and became more playful. Like I said, it may not be possible for various
reasons but if the vet says it would work and it's the only thing that would
get rid of the cancer then I would go for it.

“I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are
profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon
unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me
sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain

Re: [Felvtalk] Ginger; virus in bone marrow

2012-02-07 Thread Maureen Olvey

I'm a little confused. I thought the FeLV virus gets into the bone marrow of
every cat that is not able to extinguish the virus. The virus gets into the
blood stream then progresses to the bone marrow. From there the virus will
replicate in the white blood cells and the cat will stay persistantly viremic
or it will become dormant in the bone marrow. The bone marrow is where the
virus resides in every positive cat isn't it?

I was going to try out Dr. Sam Chachoua's serum when my cat died the day it
was being shipped. You can watch his lecture and decide for yourself.

However, even if you could get a reduced fee through Dr. Sam's foundation,
the leg amputation would be a lot less expensive.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Ginger; virus in bone marrow

.. I want to tell you what hapenned to us with our FeLV+ Jourdan. On Thurs
vet though virus was in the bone marrow. Sat she was very poor but she was
holding her own. By Mon one of her eyes looked very strange so I went to get
things ready to get her to vet, drove her there, less than 10 mts. We got
her out of carrier, set on table, when vet came in she reared her head up
and stared at them. Both her eyes were completly white, looked like
something out of a horror movie. Vet said the virus would have gotten in her
brain and made her blind, she was in lots of pain so we helped her along.
But did I wish I had done it before..

I'm not saying same will happen to Ginger but we don't know. If virus is in
the bone marrow it is very bad and she's really suffering. Whatever you do
will be the best decision

Sending a big hug

Marta

What kind of litter?

Eating litter is a classic sign of severe anemia. Most of my FeLV's died
from anemia. At this point it's probably too late for interferon. That is a
good preventative to boost the immune system, but it takes a while to start
 working.
I euthanized all mine at the point they started eating litter, but that is
a choice that only you can make.
My thought are with you your baby. I know how hard it is to see them
 suffer.

My vet ordered Interferon and Cyproheptadine. The vet suspects leukemia is
already in kitty's bone marrow. Ginger kitty refuses to eat his food but
tried to eat his cat litter last night. What should I do? Euthanasia? I
can't see my darling suffer like this! Marinda

Dry food isn't great for a renal cat. KD isn't the best either. I fed my
Spader wet food with lower phosphorus levels. All of the Friskies Special Diet
foods and even the Fancy Feast Chicken and Tuna.
I stayed around 230-240 in the phos level on these great charts:

There are some who believe dry food causes CRF, so you may want to research
more on this. Try the Holisticat.com site and Googling for other folks.

I am dealing with CRF on a continuous basis, and treatment depends on the
levels of creatinine, BUN, phosphorus, etc.
I use aluminum hydroxide, Pepcid AC, sub=q fluids, special diets, and whatever
the vet tells me depending on test results.

I must have missed it, but can someone give me Tanya's site about CRF? My
beloved Manny cat has CRF and I want to do as much as I can for him.

Thank you all,

Tanya's CRF site is awesome. It really helped me turn my renal cat around. I
can't access my list of things to feed when cats refuse to eat right now. Off
the top of my head: a plain McDonald's hamburger patty, all meat baby food,
boiled chicken, cheese, lunchmeat, smelly fish food.. I am just learning
about Felv. My prior experience with cat issues is with diabetes and renal
failure. Sending you good thoughts. Holl font
