[Felvtalk] Too little appetite
Hello everyone, Kitty, our little 19 months old FeLV positive cat, has for the past three days been eating less than usual. I have tried all sort of new canned foods but she eats a little bit and then walks away. She will eat maybe 1/3 of what she would normally eat in one meal then walk away sometimes she comes back to it but mostly she will want something else. If I give it to her in a new bowl she might it or not. She has not stopped eating all together but I'm concerned that she is not eating as much as previously. She plays, poops and pees, does not hide, is otherwise her usual adorable self. Has anyone seen these signs before? I don't know if i should take her to the vet or wait. Thanks, Malls and Kitty. That is really common in FELV or FIV cats. Also, get some appetite stimulant pills such as cyproheptadine or mirtazipine (also fights nausea). The longer you wait while the cat eats poorly, the weaker the cat gets. Nothing good comes of that. Good luck. Pugsly has persistent herpes flare-ups but got that under control with upping his lysine to 500mg twice a day and he's been pretty much fine. Yesterday, though, I found vomit and diarrhea, which I was able to determine to be his. I noticed he didn't eat yeaterday or today with his usual gusto--it's usually gone in a nanosecond. His stool is pasty and jelly-like. There was a very faint pinkish hue to some of it yeaterday. He is still active but not his usual spazzy self. I started probiotic this morning and hope it will help. He is not feverish and is hydrated. Dani is totally fine. He also gets NuCat vitamins, two twice a day, and is on a grain free wet food only diet. I was going to try some pumpkin in his food...I was wondering what other suggestions there are for treating the diarrhea. I also have slippery elm bark. I know I can call my vet and get flagyl or tylan powder but wanted to reach out here first. I just hate giving antibiotics when it's not known if it's a bacterial cause. Hi everyone, I hope everyone is well. Kitty, FeLV +, who is now one year old has had a good year. She is on lysine, a fungi mush powder, tabby tabs multivitamin and is fed canned food for one meal, dr Pierson homemade poultry recipe for another meal and raw rabbit for another meal. She is growing and is now a little over 10lbs. Since Sunday afternoon she has been a bit off, not as eager to eat her food (usually she is very food oriented) or laying under the bed and not coming out unless its calm and quiet. I feel it's because this weekend and yesterday were a bit stressful, vacuuming and some loud voices. This morning she was more like herself but I'm still taking her to the vet tomorrow afternoon. I also work with a holistic vet but she is on vacation this week. I know taking her to the vet will stress her and the holistic vet recommended only going in emergencies but I'm concerned and the last time she went to a regular vet was in March. Essential are taurine and calcium, unless you're feeding raw with bone, then you can skip the Ca. I liked the list, as well, as it gave me new foods to look into, but I was disappointed in most of them when I looked at the ingredients. The only one I use from there is Hound and Gatos. The other canned varieties seem to have too many extraneous ingredients, and I don't feed raw to the FeLV group, not even my own preparation. Tiki is way too expensive for me to even consider (I think the Hound and Gatos is too high, as well, but I do keep it in the mix) and most varieties have fish, which may not be good for my FLUTD/FeLV boys. I confess that I feed some lpw-end foods, simply beause I like the ingredient lists better than some of the high end ones. Meowko is now an angel. She crossed the rainbow bridge on May 26th, around 8:45pm US eastern daylight saving time. Her passing was peaceful, but for whole my family, our life would never be the same without her. I can't stop thinking about the day I first met Meowko back in Taipei city, Taiwan. It was not me who adopted Mewoko; it was Meowko who adopted me. That was also a beautiful May day. She jumped into my window during dinnertime demanding the fish entree in my bento. From that day, she came every night, until one day she decided to stay and never left again. I didn't know anything of cats back to that time. I was actually very afraid of cats when I was little as in many Asian legends cats are evil. So I turned to one of my friend's friend who I knew he took care of street cats for years, asking tips about how to be a cat parent. This friend became my boyfriend, later my husband. Meowko traveled with us all the time, from Taiwan to the US 7yrs ago, and from Minnesota to Connecticut last year, not to mention those shorter trips/research trips over these years. She was good at taking airplanes, riding for week-long road trip, and had always been calm in front of anything. She was the perfect cat a geographer can ever dream for, and I always believe herself was a cat geographer as well. We have always been saying that she probably taught geography in feline schools when her humans were in sleep. We are going to arrange a witness of Meowko's cremation on Wednesday. She will always in our hearts...She is survived by her two humans and her 7 yrs old littermate, Jaja, who also jumped into our window several years later. Although Meowko had been sick over these years as she was getting old, she had a very good quality of life until the day before yesterday. She was deeply loved by many people who knew her, from many places around the world. I hope I could have had a little more time with her... I have already missed her so terribly. Along with some ckd medical supplies, Meowko left about 20 days' supply of interferon alpha 2b oral liquid 100 IU/ml strength available (expiration date, June 20th, 2013). If anyone needs it, we are in eastern Connecticut, you’re welcome to pick it up or we can drop off in reasonable traveling distance. Or I can mail it to you, the only thing I ask would be that you pay for the shipping as it requires cool pack overnight shipping.) Please give your babies extra hugs for us. All

I had put a post up asking the group about raw food for FeLV cats but no one responded or commented about using that for their cats. Also I have read that seafood is not recommended for FeLV cats so I do not feed any seafood to mine. I am trying to find a holistic vet to start my FeLV cat on a special diet but it's always best to be in contact with a vet when starting the home cook diet or a raw diet. If the cats are sick l would take them to vet so they can be treated right away, with FeLV early prevention is the best policy. Hope this helps, please send an update soon. Mixing cats is a pretty frequent question. You may want to search the archives for mixing. 1st I would recommend having your FeLV cat retested in 6 months. Sometimes there are false positives, sometimes(though rarely) they can throw the virus off. You could also get the cat tested on an IFA, which is a blood test which is sent out to a lab. If determines if the virus is circulating in the bone marrow. If the IFA is positive, there is no need to retest. Cats with a positive IFA will not throw the virus off. Your vet should be able to explain the protocol to you. I mix my FeLV non-FeLV cats freely. They all eat drink from the same bowls. I have been doing this for over 10 years, none of my non-FeLV cats have ever turned positive. I have even had FIV+ cats living with the FeLV+ cats, they have never caught the virus (I do re-test my non FeLV's, so I know this to be true) You do need to keep him separate from your other cats until your cats are fully vaccinated ( 1st vaccine, booster vaccine, wait at least 10 days after last vaccine) before mixing. 2 of my previous vets recommended vaccinating my non-FeLV cats every 6 months, instead of every year. Currently I just vaccinate yearly. Right now I have 5 FeLV+ cats, 1 FIV+ cat, one who is just a normal, healthy, 13 year old who is not positive for anything. Virbagen Omega is expensive, but I know (roughly) how much it costs, and it's worth it to me if it can help Ember. There seems to have been some success in its use. Unfortunately, it still doesn't seem to be available here, and shipping is a good chunk of its cost. LTCI and ImmunoRegulin seem affordable and potentially useful. Attach one side to the underside of the plastic sheeting or whatever you are using and place the matching strip on the sofa and press down to stick it to the sofa material. It doesn't have to be perfect but it will prevent the plastic from drifting away off the sofa. You can also use things like metal clips purchased at an office supply store to clip the plastic to the sofa. Use enough of them. You can also purchase screw pins that are used to pin sofa covers to old furniture. Doesn't do any damage. The small hole it makes closes up when the pin is removed. Have you thought about buying a fitted sofa and love seat cover? You can have the back plasticized with a heat process. You have to look this up in the phone book though, under plasticizing or phone an upholstery company and see if they can do that. As a last resort, put your sofa and love seat and TV in a separate room that can be closed off and put plastic lawn furniture in you living room and turn the living room over to the misbehaving cat. I'm going to buy some of that cat attract litter. Can it be mixed with pine litter or clay litter? I can't afford anything very expensive. I usually get donated litter here. I have so many cats who think outside of the box that I no longer use a pooper scooper. I use a small yard shovel. Sigh. The President of one of our rescue organizations is going to build an outside shelter attached to a shed on her property for 15 cats who will never learn litter box protocol. I had told them she was FELV+ but they did not seem upset that she was just 1 point low on red and white cells. After the holiday, I took her to my vet as she was not improving, had not passed urine or stool. First thing he did was look at her anal glands. They were impacted and infected. He cleaned them out and gave her Covina and we brought home Orbax to be given once daily. Everything was much better, she was back to her self. Then Friday, she began hiding, not eating or drinking so took her to vet on Saturday. ONE THING SHE DID THAT STRUCK ME ODD - SHE TRIED TO EAT THE FIRBARK THAT MY ORCHIDS ARE PLANTED IN. Sat when we got to vet, my dr was not there, but his wife (also a vet) was. She said her lymph glands were slightly enlarged and gums very pale. We did another blood panel. Her white cells were .98 and her red blood cells were 3.2. Kidney and liver functions were normal as were creatine and bun. We thought about going to ER for transfusion, but she would have to stay over the weekend in a cage and we decided the stress would outweigh any good it might do plus her body might just kill the new blood and we would be right back where we started plus stress. Again, gave Covina shot and started again on Orbax. I wanted to try a tonic that has worked wonders on cancers, etc. Vet said ok but keep a record of what I did in case it worked. She actually seemed to improve. I was feeding with an eye dropper aruond 50 ml every hour (i can ad mixed with 3 cans hot water so she could swallow and also to egt fluids into her. They said he was critical , and didn’t think he was going to make it. May be best to put him to sleep since he was Felv+ and needed oxygen and and his gums were pale. That night they extracted 3 ½ cups of fluid from his lungs. Thank goodness, because that saved his life. In the morning we transferred him to our regular vet and our vet thought it was his heart. He was right. The ultrasound showed a huge mass tumor at the base of his heart. The vet wasn’t sure how much time Prancer had, however, he said it might be a day or week, depending on how much fluid built up in his lung area. Within 4 days, the fluid was back and I could not have him suffer as I lost my Dad to the the suffering of congestive heart failure (with build up of fluid in the lungs). So, my vet believes that Interferon might have helped Prancer over the years, since in all his years in practice, they have not seen a cat like Prancer, great health for 9 ½ years, but be Felv +. I am having enough problems in deciding to vaccinate or not. I have a couple who never go outside so are not exposed to critters that might infect them and 1 is 14 years old. I am afraid that vaccinating her at that age might do more harm than good. The others only go out for an hour or 2 and most of the time they are on the deck laying in the sun. Rabies is required here, but not the others. I do give the negative cats the FELV vaccine since I have 2 positives. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org

His adopters kept him in a bathroom for 2 days (they were told to give him at least 2 weeks to get used to being moved) then let him out in a house. He immediately went in a crawl space in the basement. The space is inaccessible. He has not eaten food that has been left in the ceiling. This is going on a week now he has not had food or water. We are going over tonight to with a snake camera which can see into tight places. We have to decide whether to cut a hole in the side of the house or remove the bathtub. Please don't judge this persons involved. Just please keep him in your thoughts tonight. [Felvtalk] Nutrition and new FeLV positive kitten
Hello, I'm sorry for that first email. I wanted to find out if anyone had some advice and suggestions on nutrition for the little kitten I have rescue who is FeLV positive. She has tested positive and is the kitten of a feral cat, her glands are big but I'm hoping because she is now indoor and being cared for well she will test negative so I can keep her with my other two adult cats. I have been feeding her canned good with very high protein contents and no seafood, I read that was the recommended diet but any other suggestions, hints, are very welcome! Re: [Felvtalk] Nutrition and new FeLV positive kitten
Hello, Thanks, she is already taking l-lysine twice a day. We have done stool sample, bloodwork and urine test and there is no infection, which is why my vet believe she will test positive again when retested in 3 months. Sent from my iPhone. She may be fighting off an infection need meds. There is not reason you cannot keep her with your other cat if she continues to test positive. Thank you for your encouraging words, we are very happy with kitten and she is happy with us. We will retest her in a few weeks when she reaches a few months old. I was so devastated because I guess we all agreed we would take this new little gift on as she literally had landed in front of our door. She is so lively and playful so we are hopeful. Our vet is really kind and good. He did note that she might not live very long because she tested positive and has enlarged glands but we are hopeful. I am now emailing many groups who work with feral cats about getting a trap to catch the mom and have her fixed. Regarding kitten, we are keeping her, we are very sad but we will take care of her because she is so lovely and we want to offer her the best possible life until she is sick. If she is sick, we have read many reports which note that testing kitten for feline leukemia before 6months can usually show them as positive but it's only because of the mothers milk, etc...in them. We are also contacting groups to see if there is a person or a family with a cat or cats with feline leukemia who would want this new little bundle of joy just so she would have playmates. We feel awful because we have her in a bedroom, she cannot come to contact with our two other cats who are not FeLV positive. We have prepared the room for the kitten and have made a beautiful place for her. Lots of toys, kitty condo, obstacle courses so she can play around. My friend just told me about this group, so I am joining to find out more about our options, what to do next regarding our other cats, and best ways to take care of her. thanks, Mary Sent from my iPad ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
