Hi Margo,

Thanks for this info. I apologize, but he could have been sedated, I'm not sure
of the difference so I could be mistaken in my description. We were able to
'wake' him afterward but he was very groggy for a good part of the night.

I'll ask about these drugs. I'm also gonna take him with me to Krammer's
appointment tomorrow (different vet) to ask a few more questions. Thanks!

I have given it to several of my cats from time to time (Clindanycin). I
didn't know it was bad tasting. My cats tolerated it very well. And with
mouth sores, I administer it on the side of the mouth with the sore.
When cats have mouth sores, a liquid works better than pills. It hurts
less to swallow. I give them liquid vitamins, plus a solution of
pedialyte and liquid fish oil at the same time.

I'm thinking this is for the mouth issues, not uneven pupils? Just wanted to
say that generic Zyrtec (cetirizine) is often available on pharmacy's $4.00

I have 2-3 methods I use
1) I started out giving a depomedrol injection periodically (once every 4-6
weeks or as needed). Seems like it's 1/2 cc depo.

2) Then someone suggested oral dexamethasone - so I give about 1/2 cc Dex
orally, and it lasts a few days. Sometimes though they're quite resistant to
having something squirted in the mouth.

3) the most recent option Ive tried is Zyrtec. I buy Zyrtec at the grocery
store or pharmacy. Also got a pill cutter and cut the Zyrtec in half. I put
the half zyrtec in wet food once a day. You may need to crush it at first.

I've started doing the last two together in some cases. Have found the Zyrtec
very helpful for some runny noses too.

But to start out, with a difficult cat, I do Depo for about a month and see
how that works and if I can switch to Dex.

If you google these options you can find out more, of course.

pupil looks normal. I'm not sure if this is just a herpes flare up, or
something else. He first tested positive about 6 months ago. I found the
term anisocoria while searching this list archives. Gonna research a little
 more.

 Second question:
One of my 8 month old FeLV kittens, Shmoo, began having what I would call
labored or heavy breathing 2 days ago. I can see his sides and nose moving
as he breathes. He is a little less active, and last night he
coughed/wheezed a little and his paw pads, usually pink (he's a white cat),
looked slightly purple, like he's not getting enough oxygen. He looked pink
again this morning. Gonna take him in, but wanted to mention it here too in
 case anyone has input.

 Thanks,
 Katherine

Re: [Felvtalk] Uneven pupils

2013-12-20 Thread Heather
I think there can be a variety of causes. Some of the ones of concern, I
think, are high blood pressure, tumor, and toxoplasmosis possibly. We had
a 14 year old feral FIV+ kitty who had an eye issue like this and my vet
felt it was a tumor, we then found out she had CRF and toxoplasmosis (vet
didn't feel eye related to toxo) and she was treated for just under a year,
sucessfully, for all until a urinary issue took her quality of life. At
first I'd been so scared of an eye tumor, but the eye was never a problem
again. I've had other feral cats with uneven pupils where it never seemed
to be a problem.

Good luck

2013-12-20 Thread Lance
Anisocoria can be an indicator of FeLV presence, though I don’t think it
indicates progression of the disease in any way that we know about. Ember
developed anisocoria almost five years ago, when she was seven. I haven’t taken
her to a specialist, but we ruled out toxo. At times, the vet has thought that
the pupil has gotten a bit smaller, but I’ve never seen a real change.

Hi all,

Off topic or a new one.
My poor Bryyn is having an awful time. Does anyone have experience with severe
mouth pain? I've been told by vets that she's too young for stomatitis, but
she's having a horrific time.

My vet prescribed prednisone, but not only does it not seem to help, we're
leery of it for the long term and honestly can't afford it.

It seemed to be mostly jaw/lymph related as she would freak when yawning, but
it's getting worse and I'm beside myself. She also has awful breath which makes
me think as well it may be stomatitis.

Please help!

BECAUSE HE SEEMED TO BE OKAY. NEXT MORNING HE WAS DEAD. HE DID AUTOPSY TO SEE
WHAT WENT WRONG - ADHESIONS ALL OVER INSIDE. HE SAID FOR THAT TO HAPPEN,
SOMEONE REPEATEDLY KICKED HIM VERY HARD, LIKE BOUNCING HIM OFF A WALL. HE HAD
ONE YEAR WITH US AND MANY SNACKS OF DANISH WITH MY FATHER. HE THOUGHT IT WAS
CUTE BECAUSE HE WOULD MEOW ONCE OR TWICE AND THEN SWAT HIM ON THE LEG TO GET
HIS TREAT.

Re: [Felvtalk] Uneven pupils

2013-12-20 Thread Gloria B. Lane

But to start out, with a difficult cat, I do Depo for about a month and see how
that works and if I can switch to Dex.

If you google these options you can find out more, of course.

One of my rescues has uneven pupils, and he is negative for FelV and
FIV. He had an injury to his head when I found him, and the vet
thinks it caused him to go blind in one eye. He's fine otherwise.
I've had him for over a year now and he's turned into a real head
bonker.

I don't think (but not sure) uneven pupils are caused from FelV,
but the breathing problem could be caused from anemia, a common
thing with FelV cats.

remaining 9 months there were no further changes or indications,
she also had toxoplasmosis my vet didn't think it was due to
that, but, I sort of suspected it was since there were no further
problems and to me it looked more normal after Toxo treatment.
