I can't put him in with the other cats. I wouldn't do it with my own
cats, one of whom is FIV+ and thus especially vulnerable to contracting
FeLV, because the vaccination is not 100% effective and having seen the
ravages of FeLV I would never risk that. But it's not up to me in our
foster homes, anyway. I can't make other people put FeLV+ cats with
their own negative cats, and we can't expose cats we are saying tested
negative to FeLV and then adopt them out when they may be incubating
it. Plus we cannot afford to give our foster cats 2 FeLV shots on top
of everything else we do; it would add another $40/cat in vet costs
even with the discount we get.

thanks, though,

Hi Michelle,

I think you are right in this. I have combined, but it was
inadvertant, and wouldn't do it conciously were there an alternative. No
vaccine is 100%.

Having run a foster program myself, I understand that you cannot ask
them to risk either their own pets, or other fosters.

I hope you can find him a home.

Hi Lee,

Just a caution, 18 months ago I had no FeLV positive cats. I now have two. The same cats. The infection can apparently sequester in the bone marrow, and resurface with immune suppression and/or stress.

That's why I say my "mixing" was inadvertant :(

[Felvtalk] Sweet double pos orange tabby boy needs a home

2013-05-27 Thread lernermichelle
Hello, all! Some of you may remember me from years ago when I had
fostered and then adopted 6 FeLV+ cats and then painfully lost them
one by one over a few years.

I moved from MA to NJ 8 years ago, and 4 years ago I started a TNR and
rescue program in my town. Having gotten our town under control and to
no kill status, we are brancing out a bit to the border towns. We just
TNR'd a mother cat and removed the kittens, who were 8 weeks old ,to
tame, and the father, who, once trapped, could be handled. The kittens
are fine, the mom is fine and back out, but the father tested double
positive for FIV/FeLV.

We do not really have anywhere to put him. He is in a fosterer's guest
room right now but she is only allowing that fora few weeks. We have
FIV+ cats in our foster homes (I have one in mine), but no FeLV or
space for them as we are just a few volunteers with foster space in our
homes and handle 100+ cats/year. He's a really sweet guy, a bit
timid/shy but loves to be pet and brushed. The vet said he's 4-5 years
old. We are still just referring to him as papa cat and for some
reason haven't decided on a name yet.

I realize no one really comes to this list looking to take on more
positive cats. But if anyone has space for him, it would be wonderful.
The FIV is not so much of an issue for cats with FeLV, as it is a less
bad disease. Out of my 6 FeLV+ cats, only one had FIV too and it did
not seem to spread (it only spreads through bite wounds) and she
actually outlived all the others who only had FeLV (Patches, if anyone
remembers).

It would probably be a good idea to contact them as even if not, they may

I have had horrible experiences with Shadow Cats. They typically are only
going to take in animals if it gets them some kind of news coverage, or if
the cat is a tuxedo. The owner has a thing about tuxedo cats.

else you can do. They obviously love their cats. Jack has been neutered so
that should reduce the FIV risk.

doubt that your local shelter makes warding signs is one of their
partners, but there are a lot of shelters around the country now that have
meals-on-wheels for local elderly and disabled folks. you might also want to
contact the local center for independent living and ask them
if there are any local programs they know of--some food banks have animal
food banks, too. (one has to wonder if this woman is aware of the various
programs that she, herself, if quite possibly eligible.)

after you find out what the other cat's diagnosis is, i think doing what
has been suggested is good--as long as we're talking FeLV. i don't see any
particular reason to say much about the FIV. that the cat has a virus
that might never become activated, just keep closer watch for changes, etc.
i might not use the word leukemia right away, cuz that in and of itself
 scares people.

start a food pantry. contact the CIL and senior programs and find out
about the ones that are operated in other parts of the country--it's a GREYT
idea, and the need is incredible

What wonderful work you do Kelley. How old is Jack? Has he showed any
symptoms? I have little knowledge of this horrible disease, just my own
experience with my little guy who died, but I think if the lady is feeding him
well and he'd doing ok I wouldn't alarm her with this news. Maybe just tell
her the prognosis and to watch for signs of the disease. What else can you do.
If he becomes ill and expensive medications are out of the question then I
guess we know what has to be done.

That's rea;;u moce tjat upi are offering the free spay/neuter to people. I got
our Snowy from TLC animal aid and that was included in the fee. $125.00. We
still haven't had her spayed because she suffered a little setback and had to
have minor surgery, but when we do get her spayed, I'm gonna pay the fee anyway
or give it to TLC. The vets that work for these organizations around here are
extremely generous with their services to needy animals.

RE: Neighbor's cat double pos

2008-05-23 Thread Chris
You know, there are probably thousands and thousands more undiagnosed cats
then diagnosed ones. What matters most for these little ones, at least in
my opinion, is the overall care and love they get. If they're safe, not
hungry, and in general good health-that's half the battle. The rest is
great and I do give my some higher quality foods but everyone just does the
best they can. I'm not sure frightening this disabled woman would help Jack
in the long run. There are decent foods at the supermarket and my guess is
that these kitties also get tastes of human food as well. Perhaps talking
to her about supplementing their kitty food with some plain chicken or beef
or even veggies when she has extra wouldn't hurt. Listen, my family had 3
cats who lived to 23, 22, 24 and they survived on 9 Lives and human food!

Explaining FELV or FIV is tricky because people think aids or leukemia.
Maybe just saying that Jack's got a virus that makes him more prone to
develop infections, etc. would be less frightening. Do you know how old the
kitties are?

You're right. We probably shouldn't even have tested him, and normally I
wouldn't, but there is another cat in the house, Star. We had her spayed
and initial vacs for distemper, rabies and FELV 2 weeks ago, and she's going
to be boostered and tested tomorrow. I don't know exact ages on either -
apparently healthy young adults.

   Hi Kelley,
A predicament indeed ... I would just explain that is they can afford
it they should get any negs vaccinated, do the best as far as food they
can afford and most important as far as I am concerned keep stress to a
minimum.

The cats all live together already so have been exposed to each other so
now it's just a matter of doing the best they can with what they have.
Bailey ate Fancy Feast of his 11 years, it was only until the last year
and a half or so I started feeding raw, he was healthy until the last 6
months of his life.

Stress in my mind is far more important than anything else, Fancy Feast
if they can afford it is one of the better store bought foods if there
is such a thing. I know a lot of cancer, CRF and other kitties with
health issues eating Fancy Feast and they are doing just fine.

For me, I just deal with the FELV the way I usually do, and assume
FELV is the major culprit. With FELV cats that are fairly young -
like less than 4 years old - I'd give interferon. For those older
than that, I haven't been doing anything except giving them a stable
environment and care. I have 1 double positive right now, he's about
4-5 years old, B.B., and he's doing great.

I had one prior to that, and he was in bad shape when I got him. he
lived 1 year. Mr. Black Kitty was a great cat, great attitude - had
diarrhea problems, which got resolved, and had fragile bones prior to
his death. Seemed to die of kidney failure, I don't know.

I haven't had time to pester my vet w/questions about Percy, who is
double pos. (felv+ / fiv+).

Does anyone have any special advice for double pos.cats?

Or is it pretty much the same protacol as w/felv+?

Just curious.

Re: double pos. (Kerry)

2007-08-24 Thread Susan Dubose
Hi Kerry,

Thanks for all the good info.

For now I amboosting Percy's immune system w/my usual bag of tricks, the
Lysine,Missing Link Nutrional Yeast.

All the felv+cats get these supplements.

I am concerned about Percy, tho, he has runnyeyes, which I hope to get cleared
up soon.

He has an unknown history, he was rescued from a rescuer that turned hoarder,
along w/ 184 other cats.

Prior to that, not sure, probably the LaPorte high kill shelter. (very HIGH
kill)..?

That is where she (hoarder) predominantly pulled from.

His fur was kinda rough w/dandruff, but I think just in the 3 days he has been
w/me on supplements, moist food higher quality dry it looks like it has
improved.

So, do you belong to the fiv yahoo group?

And you feel like you get alot out of it?

I am already on so many groups, but I think fiv is an important disease because
so many cats are destroyed w/it when they could have very long lives.

And they can live w/non fiv cats so easily.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

  Hi Susan,
My Bandy was double pos..If you are lucky as we were, the fiv will never be a
factor..You can search the archives for Bandy..His worst problem was recurring

had anterior uveitis..So we battled both of those as well..he was on alpha
