Jen,

I am so sorry about Chinney. My Puff, went like that too. The decision to let them go is always so hard for us, but I believe it is the greatest gift you can give them, to keep them free from pain.

Take care,

Could you please add our beautiful, shy boy, Chinney, to the Candlelight Service list? We made the decision to let him go last night...he was suspected to have had lymphoma. He didn't respond to antibiotics and was scheduled to go in for an ultrasound today but his breathing became too labored. He's the first of our 5 babies to cross-over and join his mother on the other side. I'm still stunned that a beautiful, vibrant little boy can be so apparently healthy one day and then go downhill so unbelievably fast...I hate this virus...it just seems so unfair...he was so young. My heart is absolutely broken...

Take care, all,

Re: Another FIV Question

2003-08-04 Thread Joan Doljan
Julie,

Is Mr. B neutered? If not, after 3 weeks or so, his aggression might lessen. The Western Blot is a definitive test--there is not reason to re-test (whatever the result). The elisa test, is the one which is not as accurate. I think, being a biter, it would be better to keep him alone.

JoanJulie Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Everyone,

I had another person with an FIV+ cat referred to me yesterday. This situation is so sad; the people moved away and left the cat behind. This dear lady, Anita, has been giving him treats and attention for some time anyway since he appeared to prefer her company. Well, when she finally realized they were gone and not coming back, she decided to adopt him, Mr. B, he is called. He came up FIV+ on the combo test.

She is very concerned for her other cats and is reluctant to use the FIV vaccine on them, feeling (correctly, in my opinion) that it would offer little in terms of real protection. Mr. B is evidently a biter, which is what concerns her. When she first brought him into the basement, he got very upset when her elderly mom wouldn't let him into the other part of the house and bit her foot. She has also seen him show aggression towards other outdoor cats in the neighborhood. She could deal with the aggression, but with the FIV complicating things, she feels the best thing she could do is to try to place him. She said he is a friendly, wonderful cat who simply craves attention, so he would likely be fine in home where he didn't get stressed and/or the other cat(s) were FIV+.

I suggested she confirm the FIV with the Western Blot and her question to me (which I can't answer) is, what if that test is negative? Obviously a re-test would be order, but if he continued to test negative, what does that mean?

Can they clear FIV as they can FeLV?
Would Mr. B then be a carrier?

I did quite a bit of research for the call I had the previous week, and I've not seen this addressed. Is it possible that we just don't know?

Any information appreciated.

I want to thank everyone for their kind wishes for Halloween. He deteriorated greatly from Saturday night to Sunday morning, and I made the hard decision to let him go. He was a truly wonderful guy, he came to me when he was about 7yrs old, FIV+. He was with me for about 2 years, with one TV appearance. and was then adopted by a very elderly man, George, who loved him dearly.George, had to go into the hospital for a protracted time, and Halloween again returned to me. When George was released from the hospital, after 3 months, he came to visit Halloween at my home. George called his name and Halloween ran to him like a puppy. George came every Sunday. walking with a cane, many blocks, to visit him, pet and comb him (he was a beautiful Himalayan mix, black with orange eyes), until George died. A few weeks ago,Halloween started to lose weight rapidly. They found a tumor, half the size of this stomach. !
! He was
eating and acting fine until Saturday. On Saturday, he stopped eating and started to hide.On Sunday, it was the same. At his heydayhe was close to 20lbs, when he died he was less than4.

Imiss him terribly but am so glad we raninto each other. He was about 15 years old at his death.

Thank you,

Re: Prayers needed for Mojo

Here's hoping that all goes well with Mojo. I have had cats with fevers that high as well--and all turned out just fine. In my experience, i.v. fluids generally work wonders and that he is eating is a really good sign (as I know, you know).

Hugs,

JoanJulie Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Dear Friends,

I ask your help with good wishes and prayers for Mojo; I rushed him to the ER yesterday afternoon when he began to cry and stagger. It looked eerily like his bout with toxoplasmosis 3 years ago and in fact, that is what is suspected, although they won't know for sure until the complete bloodwork is back.

At one point last night his fever had climbed to 107 (it was 106 when I got him there) despiteIV fluids. They administered a small dose of steroids to try and get the fever downand keep it down, and as of this morning it's down to about 104. He's licking food off their fingers (Yes, he's eating! Not much, but still interested) and pretty much snuggled up in his blanket.

Although he is nearly 5 years old, he is tiny; the size of a 6 month old kitten and only you all can understand how empty a house can feel when one of the babies isn't there. He's the sweetest boy ever, and we are so missing his clown-ish ways.

I'm hoping that the high sustained fever and recurrance of the dormant infection will not necessarily lead to increased neurological damage, but we'll deal with whatever comes. We just want him home and feeling well, so please keep him in your thoughts andsend some healing vibes his way.

-- Hi Everyone,It's been a very hard stretch. Abby who lived at my office with her brother (both were felv+) was diagnosed suddenly (she had been in great health) at the end of Feb 03. She and Harry, who were2 1/2 years old, were two of the most loving cats that I have ever been blessed to know. Abby went into remission, and did very well. In July 03, Harry was diagnosed with lymphoma as well. Unfortunately, Harry's was farther advanced, and we lost him early in Oct. When Abby was first diagnosed, little did I ever think that Harry would be gone before her.I had my doubts about taking more felv+ cats at this time, so much heart ache. But Abby and Harry had other plans for us. Abby seemed to be very healthy , and also very lonely without Harry, to whom she had been so close. We started to look for another felv!
+ cat to
keep her company.Late in Nov. we found Flutie, a 6 month old bundle of orange joy. He fell in love with Abby, eased Abby's aching heart and brought joy back to her life, and to ours. It was with great sadness that in mid Jan 04 we found that Abby had come out of remission, and two days later lost her.Flutie is a very social cat, and we knew that he needed a new friend asap. We found another felv+ boy (10 month old kitten) Moon, and decided to adopt him for Flutie. Moon had been living his whole life with his brother Blue, whose nose had turned white, and who had started to fade. The wonderful folks at the rescue group made the hard choice to adopt Moon out by himself, so that he would get a home and have a companion (they were going to care for Blue for the few remaining days that he had).Late in Jan we went to pick up Moon, and met Blue as well. We had actually started the drive back home before we!
 realized
that we were making a terrible mistake to separate Moon and his brother Blue. We went back and took Blue as well. What a lucky choice for us. Blue was a remarkable spirit, his soul shone through his eyes. He loved being close, and had a purr that melted hearts. When we took him to our vet here, he said that Blue was not making any rbc (probably had leukemia) and that there was nothing to do for Blue but make him comfotable. Luckily we had a hard time accepting this news, and kept asking different vets until Abby and Harry's oncologist said that were some things that we could try. We did a whole range of things; zithromax, doxi, pred, cyclosporine, oxigolgin, iron supplements and transfusions. Unfortunately, none of these were able to help Blue make his own rbcs, and on Tuesday of this week, we finally lost our beautiful boy.Although Blue's pcv was sometimes as low as 4, and never higher than 12, he was remar!
kable. He
enjoyed everyday. He loved being with his brother and Flutie, loved listening to the birds, loved cuddling in laps and on shoulders. He taught us so much about living everyday to it's fullest. We only were blessed with Blue's presence for a little over 2 months. It's hard to imagine it was such a short time, he had such an impact on everyone who met him. I guess it really isn't the length of life, it's the quality, and Blue's was the best. We have just finished his web page for anyone who would like to take a look. It's at http://kenpope.com/bluemoonflutie/blue.phpMoon and Flutie are doing wonderfully together, but we are all missing our beautiful Blue boy. Thanks so much to everyone for your help and support during this time.Karen, Angels Abby, Harry Blue and the boysDo you Yahoo!?

She died some time in the night; Mom thinks it was early on because rigor was starting to leave her little limbs and there were a few whiffs of decomposition. She needs all the good thoughts she can get! No matter what the biopsy shows, she will have surgery to remove it.

I also took Wink in because she just seems "off" to me; she was slightly dehydrated and has a rapid heartbeat. She's a tiny thing and never weighed more than 7 lbs and is now down to 6.2, so she has lost some weight. She has a history of UTI's and I'm worried that she may be early-stage CRF; her bloodwork should be back today.

Belinda, Please add Legolas to the CLS. Thanks.

"It's normal to want to do everything humanly possible to save a life, and that's important. Knowing when to let go is the most important thing of all. Give them every good day they have coming, but know when that last good day has been spent." ~ K.S.
Legolas' last good day was spent over the weekend. Legolas left the Gray Havens for Valinor (the Bridge)Tues. morning. This is long, but I wanted to go back through his history here - especially for the folks who don't know about him. He was a remarkable guy. What happenedTuesday is at the end, for those who want to skip ahead.
Legolas came here on June 4, 2003 because he tested positive for FeLV and the ladies who got him off the street couldn't keep him. They had other cats, a small house and rooms with doors that didn't close tightly. They had him for a month and got him neutered and vaccinated. He was believed to have been a grown up kitten from the previous summer - it turned out that he was at least 5 years old, probably 8-10, and possibly much older. He was exceptionally affectionate and the ladies who rescued him said that if they couldn't find a place for him to go he'd have to be put to sleep. Never having been able to live with myself when I know there's a cat under threat of euthanasia that I can help, I quickly agreed to give him a home with my other 3 positive cats. I named him Legolas in the hopes that some elvish qualities would rub off on him - like the whole immortality thing.
He settled in within minutes and in about a 1/2 an hour, he'd found the toy stash under the bed. He wasn't eating much other than canned food back then, and I had been having trouble finding something he'd like consistantly, but for the most part, everything was going well - his weight of about 7 1/2 - 8 pounds concerned me (it was a little on the low side for a cat his size). But I still had this nagging feeling that something wasn't quite right but I couldn't put my finger on it. It seemed like there was an inordinant amount of urine in the litter pans, but then I thought that maybe I was mistaken.
One of my surviving 3 original FeLV kids (from the pre-FeLV days - there had been 6 - Sam and Slick Willy both died in 2001 from lung cancer caused by FeLV, then Tina died on 3/11/03), Monty, passed away from severe anemia on 7/25/03, then I decided that I wanted to know more about Legolas' health and had some bloodwork done on him. I found out that his blood work showed that he was anemic, had elevated BUN and creatinine levels, and he had a significant heart murmur. His red blood cell count was at about 13 or 17% (the same that Monty's was when he was too weak to stand anymore) yet he would run into the bathroom when I was in there and clear a jump from the floor 3-4 feet in front of me to my shoulder while I was sitting on the toilet. We started him on subQ fluids and some medication, and he seemed to improve. I took him to the internal medicine vet that I take a couple of mynegativeguys with HCM to, and found that he didn't have kidney failure, his k!
idneys
were enlarged and probably had either an infection raging in them or had cancer. With the fluids, his packed cell volume (PCV) of red blood cells had increased, and his murmur went away, so we kept on doing what we could for him, but really didn't expect him to see Sept. 1st.
He had a hard time with his appetite, and for a while, Fancy Feast cat food was all he would eat. Then, he threw up with one flavor and he wouldn't touch it again, and found another flavor he was willing to try until he threw up again (his kidney problems made him nautious). Then his appetite changed and all I could get him to eat was home cooked food - chicken livers, rice, broth and a little water. He enjoyed his chicken liver soup, until he threw up after eating it, and I couldn't get him to eat it anymore. By October ('03) I figured out that he adored fast food, and started getting things like KFC and Burger King for him. I'd get a KFC dinner, give him the meat from the chicken, and offer him a little of the potatoes and mac cheese, and found out that he would eat well if I shared a dinner with him. If I got it for him, tore up his food, and ate some other kind of food myself, he'd only pick at his food. If I got a dinner for both of us, tore up his food, !
and had
some myself, he'd eat an entire chicken breast by himself, along with a spoonful of mac and cheese and mashed potatoes - and sometimes some of the biscuit. Because he wasn't eating much else, I made a point of getting fast food everyday that I could share with him - burgers without

Re: Simon stopping chemo and does not have long

2005-01-07 Thread Joan Doljan
Michelle,

I am been reading Simon's posts and had so hoped that something would kick in. I am so sad that it looks like you will lose Simon. I know that for whatever time Simon has left that it will be full of gentle caring and love.

Joan[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I brought Simon in for the Adriamycin this morning, his 5th chemo treatment which he had to skip 3 days ago because his WBC was too low to get it. His WBC was back up towards normal, but his PCV had dropped to 15 and, more importantly, his bilirubin (liver values) were back up to 9. Normal is under .8 (that's .8, not 8-- less than one). On Tuesday he was at 2.5 and had been 1.3 the week before, so it has skyrocketed. He feels very sick and will not eat but I am syringing. The oncologist said he could not give a full dose of Adriamycin or even a half dose without probably killing Simon, because it needs to be processed through the liver and his liver is so extremely compromised. He said he could try a 1/4 dose of it, but that even this would likely make him sicker than he is and necessitate a weekend of IV fluids for any hope of him processing it, and there would only be a miniscule chance that such a low dose would curb such aggressive and advanced
cancer. It seems like Simon went into remission, or close to it, after 3 weeks of chemo, and then came out of remission within a week. Apparently FeLV+ cats respond to chemo like other cats, but come out of it with resistant cancers much more quickly. The oncologist was willing to do the 1/4 dose of Adriamycin or another drug I can not remember starting with a C and consisting of 3 letters, but said that he thought there was almost no chance of such low doses helping and that Simon would spend his last days in the hospital hooked up to IV, with strangers, and sicker. He said if Simon were his cat he would take him home and see if he can have a few days of semi-comfort. He gave him a shot of dex and a shot of depo to see if that would shrink the tumors a little and keep him more comfortable. The dex should have set in by now, but is not having any effect. He does not want to be touched much, fought me when I syringed him, and is mostly hiding by himself. I !
am
thinking of separating him from the other cats and keeping him in my bedroom so that he can be by himself without having to hide. He is turning bright yellow. I do not think he has very long at all. I am devastated. We fought this so hard-- 3 transfusions, 5 days of hospitalization, 5 chemo treatments all in the last month. Syringe feedings and sub q fluids. He has been through so much, and all it gave him was a week or two in the middle when he was eating some and playing some and cuddling with Ginger. At that point I thought it was worth it, and maybe it was. He is only 4 years old. I am not sure how long to let him go on like this. My partner is against euthanasia, and I usually am not willing to do it until it is clear they are in the process of dying. But it seems unlikely he will ever feel even remotely ok again.

If you pray, please pray for him to get some relief from the steroids and have at least a few more happy days, and then to go peacefully when he does go.
Thanks,
Michelle

He has lost weight, but he basically seems like athinner, slightly less energetic and hungry version of his old self. He is morehis old self than when he was on chemo and his blood values were almostnormal.I thought yesterday, and continue to suspect, that this is a final rallybefore death as sometimes happens. However, I am beginning to wonder ifperhaps the steroids have kicked in and are doing something. Kathy-- does thislevel and length of eating and energy seem consistent with a final rallybefore death, or does it seem like something might actually be improving?I am afraid to hope, but I emailed the oncologist asking if there is adecent chance that, given his behavior, !
his blood
counts might be normal enoughto get a dose of adriamycin or ccmu (the strong chemo he was supposed toget last week) without needing to be hospitalized or risking getting very ill.he feels so good and is so happy right now that I do not want to dosomething to make him miserable, but if there is a chance he can get something at a levelnot likely to make him ill and come home afterwards I might bring him in. Iam almost afraid to do anything-- subject him to a car ride, give him anymedicine at all, because he is doing so well on nothing and I am wondering howmuch of it has to do with being happy and stress-free after so many weeks of vetvisits, force feedings, pills, and fluids. What if I bring him thereand the stress or the chemo makes him sick? Perhaps steroids can keep him happy for a little while, and chances of complete remission from chemo at this pointare probably still not high e!
ven if he
is able to get the stronger chemo. But if the oncologist thinks it is possible he can get that chemo and come home, and have a chance at remission for weeks or months, should I bring him there to getseen and have his blood levels checked? He really is not as ferociously hungry as yesterday morning, when hewould eat anything. He did turn down everything I offered him after a fewbites this morning until I gave him the liver shake, which he vacuumed up and thenlicked the bowl clean. But then again yesterday morning he had not eaten fordays, and now he ate as recently as midnight or so. Perhaps the weakness waslargely from not having had any food, rather than his anemia? However, when hisPCV was down very low before, to 13 or under, he had no energy even whilegetting fed enough to gain weight. Last Friday it was at 15 and falling.Unless he has adjusted to a low hematocrit, it is hard t!
o imagine
that it hasfallen much more and yet his weakness was only due to lack of food. Don't get mewrong-- he is not as energetic as his pre-cancer self-- not jumping to highplaces or running around like a crazy boy. But he does have the energy of a lotof normal cats right now, absent the jumping. Thanks for any insights, and I truly hope I am not jinxing him by askingyou this or daring to have some slight hope,Michelle

He was the most intelligent, sweetest, gentlest, happiest, loving young man I had the pleasure to know. He was the alpha cat in my household and always ruled with a gentle paw. He will be sorely missed. He was losing weight and had an appointment today at the vet. I suspect he died of a heart attack. He was 10 years old. Except for dental work he had never been ill.Thank you,Joan

Re: life spans of positives

2005-02-08 Thread Joan Doljan
Puff came to me at about 2 years old and tested positive for both feline leukemia and aids. It was a while ago, and the only medicine available for her was Baypamum (which I had sent via a traveller from Germany) and DMG. When she became anemic (all of a sudden) she went to see Dr. Goldstein who had some success treating Feline Leukemia. She died at about 4 years of age.

If it is not too hard, could people let me know the ages of their positives now, and the ages of positives who have passed? I keep being told that I was being unrealistic in my hope that Simon, and my others, would live longer than they did. I had heard of positives living as long as 14. My Jo died at age 3, Buddy at age 18 months, and Simon was around 4. My largest grief right now is about his suffering and what he went through, but I am also so grief-stricken at how short his life was. And it was short, very short, at 4 years old, when cats can live to 20. But I also feel like it was short for a positive, like I should have been able to help him live longer than that. I am trying to assess my expectations of this, regarding my remaining positives as well, and so just want to know what the age spans really are for positives who are well
cared-for, so maybe I can be more honest with myself about what truly can be expected. Thanks,Michelle

Roxie - need opinions - OT

2005-02-09 Thread Joan Doljan
Roxie is a young cat I took from the shelter about3 weeks ago. She did fine at the shelter and was not caged. She came into the shelterwith another cat who was adopted. She has been at the shelter for about 2 months. All of a sudden, at my house, she stopped eating. Her blood work is normal, but her x-ray shows a thickening of the intestine. I did a berium (sp) x-ray and there is no indication that she swallowed anything. She has had 2 steroid shots, fluids, intravenous feeding and there is no food in her stomach and she shows no interest in eating. She does not act or look ill. She is a big cat and looks normal and healthy. She has not eaten now for over a week.

Thanks,

Joan
