Re: [Finale] Need help with HP LJ 5000 and MacOS Mojave
To everyone who offered help: I seem to have solved the problem by restarting the router. To be honest, this makes very little sense to me (since only my Mojave Mac had any problems), and I still fear it may not work after a while, but at least this way I can now access the web interface. If it stops working again my suspicion is that it all has to do with the implementation of Rendezvous, now called Bonjour, aka mDNS. In that case I will start by switching that off, which can be done in the web interface. I am glad I did this before resetting the printing system or using the migration assistant, since both these would probably have lost all my other printer setups as well, which I was trying to avoid. Anyhow, thanks to all! ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu https://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale To unsubscribe from finale send a message to: finale-unsubscr...@shsu.edu

I guess the printer may have some serial and parallel connectors, but I wouldn't know how to connect it to a modern Mac. It is definitely pre-USB... Re: [Finale] Need help with HP LJ 5000 and MacOS Mojave
On my wife's computer I get what I assume is the normal ping response with a ms-value for each ping. My Macbook like my wife's is connected via WIFI, mine doesn't even have an ethernet connection. Everything worked fine until I upgraded to Mojave. The WIFI in the house consists of A Fritzbox router connected to the DSL Another Fritzbox router used as a WIFI repeater, where the printer is connected via ethernet. My Macbook lives in the same room as that repeater fritzbox, so it usually connects to that WIFI. There is also a little Fritz WIFI repeater, which is what my wife's computer is connected through. Just to make sure that this doesn't play a role, I took my computer into that room, it connected to the WIFI through the little repeater (the Fritzbox can show the Mesh-setup in detail). No change, it could still not access the printer. The WIFI access was now identical to my wife's Mac, at least in terms of where the computer was connected in relation to the printer. Ergo, I am pretty sure it has to do with the computer's setup, or Mojave itself. There must be a setting I have overlooked, which prevents the computer from talking properly to the printer. Johannes Am 05.05.19 um 19:18 schrieb Robert Patterson: So first things first. Check that ping actually produces different results on your wife's machine. Yes, config page is as it should be, and the printer works fine in the same network from my wife's Mac with El Capitan. [Finale] Default speedy entry frame width
I am setting up Finale for a friend, and I would like automatic music spacing to be on. This means, that most of the time when you start entering music in Speedy the frame is tiny, because at some point before the empty measure had been spaced and is now small. Is there any way to make the Speedy entry frame default to a larger width, so that one can actually see the notes being entered? I realise that one could just make the measure larger before opening the Speedy frame, but that requires extra steps. I have a feeling that this is actually a very old bug which I probably encountered years ago with graphic export. However, it seems to only happen when exporting to PDF (and EPS) not to bitmap formats. Oh well, I hope the next time I have to do this I will remember. I guess that may work, I haven't tried it. I have to do many, many examples of this kind, all about 1-8 measures long, with a combined graphic on top, printing the page and editing out is simply not worth the effort. For the moment I'll stick with TIFF export. PDFs would be slightly higher quality (for the notes at least), I guess. Seems to be a bug. There are other bugs, too: Resizing images will not keep proportional, even when "fixed Percent" is ticked. Sometimes deleting an image and replacing it with another one will not stick. Re: [Finale] Score Order Question
Actually, looking at the best example piece, the Haydn Concertante, I find two different score orders: Henle puts all the obligato instruments in as orchestral parts, so the Bassoon is above the other bassoon. Landon puts them all above the strings, but their internal order is winds first, then strings. This last order seems to make most sense to me, even if this is not according to tessitura (nor is any standard orchestral score). Thanks for the input! [Finale] Laserjet 5000 jams
Hi all, I wonder whether anyone can help me locate the problem which is causing paper jams in my Laserjet 5000. Recently it started misbehaving, both feeding from the lower trays and the manual feed tray. It seems that it feeds the paper all right but then tries to feed another sheet immediately after. For a while it would work by just feeding single sheets, but now it even reports a paper jam when there is no second sheet on the tray. There isn't a jam, just opening and closing it will reset it, but it happens pretty much every time. The rollers and pads were all replaced about a year ago. Is there some sensor which doesn't see the paper anymore? This would seem like the most likely problem to me. And can I fix this myself, or is it time to get a new one? I love this printer for being able to print on A3. It's been serving me well for a long time. I replaced all of those. They are certainly not the problem, as the printer does not feed several sheets at once, it just feeds another one before the first one has quite left the tray. It does this, I can see it doing this, it is not just happening, the printer feed actively feeds another sheet, as though it hasn't been able to feed one in the first place. I definitely replaced all the rollers and pads, had to take the printer apart for this. However, it worked well for several months afterwards. Apparently it is likely to be the registration assembly, which can be replaced, I just have to find a vendor who will sell one to me. [Finale] Crowd Funding for a CD recording
Dear All, some will remember me from this list, I used to be quite active, but these days I am not doing much Finale related work, so I have become more a silent member. But I am still here, reading the occasional post. I don't usually use this list to advertise myself, but in this special case I want to make an exception and draw your attention to a Crowd Funding Campaign we are running to record the string quartets of Carl Gottlieb Reissiger (1798-1859) Reissiger was Kapellmeister in Dresden, where he succeeded Carl Maria von Weber in 1826. He is hardly known today, partly because his stage works not the greatest, due to rather poor libretti, and partly probably because Wagner made some rather biased comments about him. Reissiger himself was actually one of Wagner's supporters, it was mostly Reissiger's influence which let to Rienzi and the Flying Dutchman being premiered in Dresden (Rienzi under Reissigers direction and very successful, the Dutchman under Wagner, and originally not a success). Reissiger later supported supported Wagner and performed his music even after Wagner's flight from Dresden. Reissiger wrote 8 (or possibly 9) string quartets, and we are hoping to record all of them in the next years. This time we are planning to record the first two, op. 111 No 1 and 2. We think the music is phantastic! Have a look at the Crowd Funding Site at: http://www.visionbakery.com/reissiger-quartette?ln=en There is an English text further down. Re: [Finale] OT: current German spelling
Am 21.09.12 11:56, schrieb Eric Fiedler: And only Mäßig/mäßig is correct today. That some publishers still manage to get it wrong is typical of the situation today. The matter really is not that simple: In Swiss German there is not ß (Eszett) at all. Now you might think that this is not relevant to the rest of the German-speaking community, but it is. How would you spell mäßig in a novel by a Swiss Author (of which there are quite a number of important ones, think of Dürrenmatt or Max Frisch), or vice versa? The Swiss also have no capitalized Umlauts, so words like Öl are spelled Oel in Swiss German. I would say that in any publication which is universally used, and that includes music publications, the use of ss instead of ß is acceptable, and not considered wrong. Were you publishing an official German text, ie that of a law, you would be expected to use the traditional but reformed spelling. My guess is that we will see another reform in a not so distant future, and the use of ß will be made optional. Even today there is quite a lot of confusion. A lot of people, myself included, are so used to write daß instead of dass that we find it hard to adopt the new rule. Eric is correct that there is also a lot of financial interest behind the reform: The publishers who publish schoolbooks have sold millions of new books of standard school books. Pretty much at the same time the local goverments introduced a part self financed school book system, were a large proportion of schoolbooks has to be bought be the parents. I grew up in a world where school books were bought by schools, and used many years by many students, before a new set was required. Just imagine what an immense boost this gave to the publishers. If the latter, you may have to leave the printer on and connected for a while before it actually assigns itself an ethernet address. This is because there is no network router in between to give it one. Once it has an address (wait something like 5-10 minutes before you print the config page from the printer) you will have to change that with Telnet, unless you happen to have the Bonjour variety of the JetDirect card (I think you need a Jetdirect 620 card for this to work). You can use the Mac terminal to Telnet to the printer, just type telnet printer address (where printer address is the ethernet address on the config print out). After that it should be relatively simple, type help to find out what to do. You will have to give it an address on the same network as the computer, so only the number after the last dot should be different from your computer's address. Personally I would buy a network router (over here you get them for less than 20 Euros including WIFI) then you can print to the printer from any computer connected to the network. I was using ethernet printing in 10.5 -- and for years with all my previous systems. Well yes, but you used AppleTalk and that doesn't exist in 10.6. I know that the IP address SHOULD be something other than 0.0.0.0, but that's what it keeps saying now. It takes a while to give itself an address, as it expects the router to give it one. I used to use Telnet a million years ago, but have no idea how to reach the JetDirect card that way, and have no idea how I'd reset the card to force it to provide it's proper IP address. Some help in that regard would be GREATLY appreciated. Once the printer has a valid address Telneting is simple from the Terminal on a Mac. Or, if John Blane could recommend a specific USB cable for me, that would be great (though probably a bit slower than ethernet printing). That would work, but it would also take away the network capabilities of the printer. Johannes ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

It needs to be able to connect to Ethernet and obtain an ip address or be assigned an ip address that is in the range of your network. Although that is true, the problem is that you might have to set the ip address manually, which, if the card doesn't support Bonjour, means you will have to Telnet into it. That's a little tricky (although not impossible). And if the ip address is set to 0.0.0.0 it may be necessary to reset the card first. All I am saying is that one used to be able to use Apple Talk, but with recent MacOs this is non-functional. The easiest way to set up the printer is through Bonjour, if it supports it. It should then show up as a standard printer (mine certainly does), although it may take several minutes until it is recognized on the network. As soon as you can see it in the Bonjour submenu of Safari you can set it up easily. But older JetDirect Cards may not support this. On the other hand these cards are sold for very little on Ebay, I got mine a few years ago for 20 Euros or so. Re: [Finale] OT: HP 5000 and Snow Leopard
Hi David, How did your computer talk to your printer in 10.6? AppleTalk? That is no longer supported in 10.7. It is a while ago that I went through some of this, but I believe there are JetDirect Cards which support Bonjour, and JetDirect Cards which don't. They are cheap on ebay, so that might be an option. It used to work just fine, but the combination of MacOS 10.6.x, Acrobat 9.x and the available scanner driver doesn't work any more (and hasn't for over a year): When scanning black and white in Acrobat, a preview scan works fine, but the real scan aborts after 2 seconds. The scanner driver seems to crash. My questions: Does anyone know of a fix? Or, alternatively, do other scanners still work with this combination in Acrobat, or is there a problem in Acrobat itself? Note that scanning through Apple Preview works fine, but simply doesn't cut it for me. I occasionally have to scan 100s of pages of music, and Acrobat is far better. Dennis and Johannes have provided really good responses, but if CD Baby is not the one-stop-shopping that my group needs for this first recording, then what should we do? It is probably the best you will get. Having looked at the programme you are going to record I don't think there is a large audience which will buy the CD anyway. You will almost certainly sell more CDs after a good concert than through CDBaby in a whole year (of course minus the friends and relatives you specifically send to CDBaby, though you get more if you sell to them privately - even CD Baby wants to make some money...) The problem is that most people who buy CDs (in a shop or online) are looking either for a specific composer, or even a specific set of works by a composer, or for a (better known) ensemble. Not many customers are looking for compilations, unless they have a recommendation. I have seen several ensembles try this, and although it works well as a demo, it never sells. On the other hand, if a demo is what you have in mind, it will be fine. Just don't expect to get the money back directly. If I were you I wouldn't bother with an extravagant booklet. Just get the standard 4 page booklet, with a nice colour photo of yourselves, and a little blurb about your group. For a detailed description of the repertoire add a weblink. You can save a lot of money, and it won't make a difference to the sale. Then use at least 300 of the 500 CDs for promotion only, ie send them to concert promoters, radio stations, etc. Sell the rest to all your friends and relatives and you may even get the cost back in. You can put it on CDBaby, but this won't require more than 50 CDs for the next few years. Just my opinion, of course, you may have a different perspective. One more piece of advice: Concert promoters listen to a lot of commercial CDs, some of them phantastic. A mediocre Demo CD will not help much, the Demo needs to be excellent, so don't save on the production. Do a fully edited one, not a run-through and take the best out of three. Fully edited means record in Takes and have someone edit it properly eventually. You can do that yourself, but you need some good advice and the right software. Make sure the producer knows a bit about this kind of music. Don't let your pop music expert do the recording. He may have very expensive equipment, but most of it is useless for classical. I haven't bought a physical CD online in several years (though that's as much to do with poverty as anything else). The CD Baby model allows you access to all the major distribution channels for physical CDs if you choose to use it, so I'm just not seeing what advantage having your CD recorded/marketed by Naxos or any other commercial label gives you in terms of distribution. It may seem like that, but out of experience I can tell you that it isn't. Here is my story: I have my own CD label. Our first CDs were produced when we didn't have proper distribution, and I tried selling through CD Baby at first. Originally they only sold online through their own shop, but eventually they started distributing through Tower, and had digital distribution through iTunes and others. We sold around 10-15 CDs total with two CD titles, and made next to nothing with digital (it may even have been nothing). Ok, that's a few years ago, perhaps things have changed a little. We sold a lot more CDs after concerts than through CDBaby. We also had a similar thing in Europe, which sold one of our CDs and eventually had to close. A few years ago I managed to find a proper distributor. Since then our sales have multiplied. We first sold only those two CDs while working on a third (which was only a second volume, so no more popular than the other two). We made more money in a few months than in the years with CDBaby, although we get quite a bit less from each CD. We sold enough on those three to make the fourth CD possible, within a year or so. And in the last 18 months, with our fourth CD out (which admittedly hit a small nail, it was the Dussek String Quartets, never previously recorded) we are actually making money. Not much, but enough to keep going. The Dussek CD will need a second pressing probably early next year, that means we have probably sold around 800 through distribution (the rest is for after concert sales etc), of the 1000 we had made. Incidentally this is not only because of the added European market, we sell most of our CDs in the US. We are also in iTunes, but sell very few that way. My distributor told me there are a few Euros to be made, but nothing compared to the hardware. [Finale] Completely OT: IMAP vs POP
I this really has only very remotely to do with Finale. On the other hand it has to do with the Finale mailing list, so perhaps there will be some clever person here with some answers. I currently use several email accounts as POP accounts. All the mail gets downloaded to my computer, and deleted on the server. On my computer the mail is sorted. so that Finale list mail goes into the Finale list folder and so on. I have been living quite happily with this arrangement. Other than list mail I don't usually delete mail at all, and I keep all these emails in my email application. I estimate the amount of email on all my accounts, including the complete sent-mail folders (which I never empty, so I still have every single email I ever wrote) to be around 5 emails. Add to that the Finale list, which I erase sporadically. Usually I empty the folder after a few months, but I have been lazy lately, so it has filled up with almost 1 mails. I have a few other mailing lists I subscribe to, but none as active as Finale. Now something has changed: Santa gave me a nice little iPhone, and I am happily writing emails from it, too. And questions came up. Would IMAP serve me better? One of the reasons I started thinking about this is the Finale mail which I'd love to at least sort into a folder. The only way to do this on the iPhone is to use IMAP and do it on the server. I can work out how all of this functions, but surely it is not practical to keep thousands of emails on the server? Is there a way to have IMAP emails live on only on my computer after a certain period of time, say a few days for Finale, and perhaps a month for personal email, yet never lose anything completely? Perhaps I am missing something, but does IMAP allow me to use it like POP with only added convenience, or am I then required to keep everything on the server all the time? Perhaps someone with similar needs can give me some advice. Johannes ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

However, on my iBook I got very confused several times when I had switched on numlock by accident and couldn't work out why the keyboard didn't work properly. Re: [Finale] Re: Help with navigating on my Macbook pro
Isn't there a tool to emulate the key pad behaviour on newer macbooks? That would solve all these problems easily. Johannes ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

I have a LOT of files that seem to be doing this for no reason as to why, but moving them to Petrucci they work fine, but Maestro seems totally messed up. I had this problem after going to 10.6 in the first place. With Finale I just removed some duplicates, while with Sibelius I had to use cocktail to reset all the font caches, after removing all instances of Sibelius fonts. Re: [Finale] recent Finale versus recent Sibelius
Mark, I can see what you want, and both is no better in Sibelius. In fact I am personally not bothered by your first type, but the second type has caused me headaches, too. On the other hand Finale's engraver slurs have been the cause for many problems in the past. Only yesterday I had to redo a PDF of a part as one slur went crazy in it. I hadn't noticed before and it wasn't showing on screen in any resolution, only in the PDF. Furthermore I always had problems with slurs colliding with ties and having to hand move dynamics and such. In Sibelius this is all automatic. I admit I haven't tested this in any depth, so I can't say anything about the bugs, but it looks as though it simply works, and works well. Re: [Finale] Sibelius 6.1
On 01.11.2009 David W. Fenton wrote: Sibelius releases every 2-3 years, Finale every year. That is pretty clearly a slower release cycle, and that if each company waited until their next release to adapt to this Win7 feature, Finale would manage it next year, and Sibelius not for another 2 years or so. I specifically said that while the main release cycle is slower they usually have several maintenance releases. 6.1 is a maintenance. They are _quicker_ with maintenances than Finale ever tried to be. They are quicker if you take all releases, and this was a small number, and cost nothing. So what are you saying? Re: [Finale] recent Finale versus recent Sibelius
On 01.11.2009 Mark D Lew wrote: I'm intrigued by Johannes recent hint that slurs have improved in Sibelius 6.1. Have they solved the problem of long slurs, or are they merely catching up to Finale in this regard? Yes, Sibelius is catching up in terms of shapes. However, magnetic slurs do what Engraver slurs promised to do but never really delievered: They avoid collisions while still looking good. But they are still made up of Bezier curves, much the same way as Finales slurs. The problem with Finale's engraver slurs is that a) they are very unreliable, sometimes they do things unexpectedly, often only in the final printout, and this has caused me hours of work in the past b) they only avoid collisions with certain articulations and the notes themselves (and even that doesn't always work). Sibelius's magnetic slurs simply avoid collisions. Full stop. With everything. Can you show me an example (scanned if you like) of a slur which cannot be done in Finale? I would like to try my luck.
