And for that matter, the last ColdFusion developer.

It could be a server environment change that is incompatible now with either
Flex or ColdFusion. Technologies change and move on, sorry if that doesn’t
help. Good luck.

RE: [flexcoders] Localization in Actionscript file

2012-11-06 Thread Merrill, Jason
Why would you store information in actionscript files? It would seem better to
use a data source like XML for localization data rather than keep information
in an Actionscript file. In my opinion, in an ideal setup, the only
information that would be contained in an Actionscript file would be in the
form of constants.

Hello friends,

I have a scenario like I need to implement localization in actionscript files.

Accessing strings from respective .properties files(resource files) for
different locales. We are using resourcebundle class for that.

And we have ComboBox in that page. We need to change the display list of that
combox according to the languages being changed.

Not able to achieve this.

Please reply if anyone can help in this scenario.

I don't know if the newest version of java is related to it, but the problems

RE: [flexcoders] Evaluating a Boolean String Expression

2012-01-26 Thread Merrill, Jason
Separate out the (, ), |,not etc. by splitting the string up based on what you
find. You could add some logic to split the string into an array from where
those characters are found and look to the values to the left if an OR (||) is
found, for example. Then put that logic into a function like below:

(Add in your complex logic to a function like this:)

  /**
  * Converts a string representation of a boolean to a true boolean value.
  * For example, it will convert TRUE, False, true, TruE, f, or
T to a real boolean (true or false).
  * The input string is not case-sensitive. Acceptable arguments are the
word true or false, or the letter t or f.
  * @param value the string to convert to a boolean.
  * @return representation of the string as a true boolean value.
  **/
  public static function stringToBoolean(value:String):Boolean
  {
var boolean:Boolean = false;
if (value.toLowerCase() == true) boolean = true;
if (value.toLowerCase() == t) boolean = true;
return boolean;
  }

No small task though.

  You are right about that. That is precisely why we went with Flex
  originally (it insulated us from X-Browser issues). But, since we can't
  count on that lasting, and even Adobe is telling developers to plan on
  moving to HTML5, it seems like they're pushing us back into x-browser hell.

  I didn't want to go there, which is why we chose ZKoss. Yes, there is still
  going to be HTML/JS/CSS ultimately used, but it's how much. Even Flex SWFs
  are wrapped in HTML and JS when deployed. So, it's not that I'm against
  using any amount of HTML/JS; it's how little can I get away with to avoid
  these issues.

  Even with HTML5 libraries, such as the much touted jQuery, is, to a large
  degree, an insulator against x-browser issues. If you read the actual
  jQuery code, it deals with those issues for you.

  Now, ZK has a ZK Client JS library, which includes jQuery, that is designed
  to be a communicator mechanism between the client and the bulk of app logic
  that resides on the server. So, your normal editing and data manipulation
  that you might write in JS in a full blown HTML5 app is actually stored as
  Java on the server, and executed as needed per the EDA (event driven
  architecture). This type of JS is typically what breaks the page on
  different browsers and versions thereof. By limiting the amount of
  client-side JS, as does a jQuery type library, yes, you have some exposure
  to potential x-browser issues, but not as much as a HTML5 app that does
  everything on the client. And, when there are issues, they can be resolved
  in the ZK Client library as a patch/fix.

  So, now it seems to me that developers have several choices. Stick with
  Flex and you won't break the browser; you just won't be able to have your
  app viewed by millions on iOS products. If that seems like a better
  solution that minimal exposure to x-browser issues by using ZK or some
  other technology, well, that's certainly a choice each company has to make.

   compatibility between different browsers and versions. When IT deployed
   IE7, Flex applications worked just as they had before.

Hi Joaoak:

You can make the coupling as tight or loose as you want. Each UI object can
have a client side widget that is primarily the appearance, and a server side
component that should contain the more complex logic. So, you can hide as much
as want by placing it in the server side component as Java code, or keep in the
client side widget as JS. In fact, since you indicate you are moving to HTML5,
ZKoss actually might be a good choice, since it relies heavily on jQuery, which
is considered a favorite HTML5 library. The difference is ZK lets you choose
where client side logic is stored - as JS on the client or Java on the server.
Another type of HTML5 approach won't offer that.

Yes, we have also abandoned Flex in favor of ZKoss. Since we are already a Java
shop, on the server side, it seemed logical to use a Java based framework on
the client-side.

The thing I really like about ZK or ZKoss is that it has equivalent components
to Flex. In fact, it actually has more components than Flex.

It implements an approach that I really like of separating the UI into
appearance and behavior - much like the Spark components of Flex. Well, not
exactly, but sort of. :) Here's what I mean. For each UI object, it has a
client side (widget) and server side (component). I won't go into further
detail, but it gives you a nice separation of concerns that you can avail
yourself of. This feature also greatly insulates the rendered pages from
x-browser compatibility issues.

Check it out for yourself at their site (zkoss.org).

 components to Flex.

Flex is an awesome product.Period. Atleast until version 3.
Then they bloated it. The new spark component makes it easy to do the skinning
but it costs a big deal in download time.

I am not sure there is anything flex specific in the Flash Player Runtime. Flex
is totally written with AS3 and the flash player runs AS3.

The path I would suggest the Apache Flex guys to go is towards creating a Flex
to JS/HTML5 Cross compiler. This would be something that would help them quite
a lot. Write code with AS3 and output to JS.

There are quite a lot of Flex apps out there ( especially in the corprate world
). Given that adobe has given up on Flex ( which means they wont have any
premium support ) these guys will be looking for a solution that can work as
good as their current applications. Ofcourse, the big players ( especially in
the financial industry ) are going to be slow to move. They wont change
something just because Adobe wont support it quite in the future. They would be
looking to change. This is the point where the Apache Flex community needs to
catch up on. Flex is currently the biggest load on a ship called Flash Player
Runtime.

There is a significantly large hole in this ship. That would not have been the
case, if Adobe had not shot itself in the foot, but that is a different topic
altogether. Now, if one of the biggest load happens to unload quite fast onto
another boat the rest of the smaller entities on the ship can jump on. If not,
the other smaller entities wont die. They will just become a fish :) .
Everything evolves, the question is how do you want to evolve!

Hi James,

I certainly respect the decision of those who are sticking with Flex, but I
would suggest that developers do so with the recognition that they may be
developing with a technology that isn't going to be around that long.

I could write at length about this, but, in a nutshell, here's why. On the one
hand, you have an open-source project that is geared toward enterprise
application development, but it is completely dependent on a proprietary
runtime. That runtime is manufactured by a company who has stated its future is
digital media and digital marketing, and that it believes the future of
enterprise web application development is HTML5. It then begs the question,
How long will they bloat their Flashplayer to support an open-source Flex
community's enterprise web application development goals and wishes?

To accommodate the Flex community, Adobe gets nothing in return for its
expenditure of time and money in designing, developing, testing the features
the Flex community requires now and in the future. It also means that, by
supporting Flex in their runtime, the Flashplayer has an unnecessarily larger
footprint than would otherwise be required.

So, ask yourself if you truly believe Flex will be a supported product by Adobe
in 5-10 years from now. I highly doubt it.

On the other hand, I think if a developer uses Flash Pro to develop digital
media for their applications, they can probably count on that being around
indefinitely. But, not Flex.

Check out another possibility - using haXe for converting an MXML/Actionscript
project to HTML5/Javascript. The syntax is extremely similar to Actionscript,
so you could convert the MXML (via the option with the compiler to save the
generated Actionscript from MXML) to haXe code, and the Actionscript too.

I have a web application that was developed using 100% flex (AS included).
Now to be on the safe side we want to evaluate the options of converting the

Do any one know of any tools that can help in the process of converting from

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Cool. If it really happens exactly every other time, then that is good

matter if you did a clean or just saved a file with build automatically on,

[flexcoders] Errors during build - ASDoc Configuration

2011-11-07 Thread Merrill, Jason
Both my co-worker and I get this message on every other build in debug mode.
It's strange, it doesn't happen every time, just every OTHER time we run in
Debug mode.

Errors occurred during the build.
  Errors running builder 'Integrated External Tool Builder' on project 'KPL-R
v4'.
The file does not exist for the external tool named ASDoc Configuration
[Builder].
  The file does not exist for the external tool named ASDoc Configuration
[Builder].

Any ideas on how to fix this? Re-installing is not easy because our licenses
are managed via enterprise Tivoli pushes and it's a lot of red tape to make it
happen.

Thanks,

Jason

RE: [flexcoders] Re: ModuleLoader.child is null

2011-11-03 Thread Merrill, Jason
 In the end, I can achieve a similar result with SWFLoader, and cast the
 result as an interface type...

Same. I gave up on all the quirks and pains and limitations of Flex Modules and
went with loading in separate .swfs calling them an interface. Worked just as
well, and I felt more in control.

 Perhaps you're getting an error on load; probably due to the path. Try
 adding an event listener for ModuleEvent.ERROR.

The ModuleEvent.READY listener is executing, the path is correct.

 var test:ITest ITest(this._moduleLoader.child);

This was a typo. this._moduleLoader.child is still null here though. I get the
same problem using mx and spark ModuleLoader. So unless someone can spot the
problem, I'm going to use SWFLoader...

There is some setting that gets overridden, you need to Google for it though
I forgot since it happen. I found the answer on a blog. Once you find it is
pretty easy to fix.

Debugger was either uninstalled or replaced by enterprise software with the
regular Flash player. Have you verified the Flash Player Debugger version is
installed? I don't know if that's the issue, but something to check.

Flash player debug was installed.

We figured out what the issue was...the .swf compiled into the Web root and
Output folder was not being referenced; the html template php file was
referencing a different version of the app, in a different file location. When
run/debug was executed, the .swf would stop at breakpoints, which made it extra
confusing, although as stated, trace statements were not appearing, and
breakpoint 'step over/step into' functionality wasn't working consistently.
Once we cleared the cache, we discovered the problem.

Cheers,

Philip

I have a function call in my app that calls the server and expects back a CSV
file that I want the user to be able to save. Right now I make that call via
navigateToURL() with a parameter of _blank. Due to a change in requirements,
I need to refresh a grid after that server call is completed so I need some
sort of complete event. I see that URLLoader() has a complete event, but it
doesn't seem to support opening in _blank so I get the save prompt.

Anyone know a solution here?

[flexcoders] ASDoc and third party libraries

2010-04-08 Thread Merrill, Jason
Those of you who use ASDoc from the Flex 3 SDK I'm sure have come across
this before. If you use FlashDevelop and ASDoc - then even better as
that is my setup (this is actually for a Flash CS3 project, but no
matter).

How do you handle running ASDoc on a Flash or Flex project where you are
also using other third party libraries? If you run ASDoc on a project
that uses a third party library like Greensock's TweenLite or
Papervision3D, as I am, you can get all kinds of compiler errors because
it tries to include those in the documentation as well (since they are
imported into your classes), and those are not necessarily set up for
ASDoc. I know in FlashDevelop, the Actionscript Documentation Generator
has a field for classes to exclude - but it would be impossible to list
out all those third party classes - is there a way to exclude an entire
package?

I have tried various forms of adding -exclude-dependencies but keep
getting this error:

Error: exclude-dependencies can not be used with doc-sources.

And honestly, I'm not even sure how to use that flag correctly (if
that's even the right flag at all). I tried adding a class name right
after it but it couldn't find the class. Searching online for an hour
has done no good. The documentation really stinks for ASDoc and so does
the help system you can call with a -help flag.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

[flexcoders] Flexbuilder 3 Java problems

2009-07-29 Thread Merrill, Jason
I'm having Java runtime problems with Flexbuilder 3 again. I swear, I'm
so tired of this. I've never had software that kept breaking so much.
I've done nothing to Flex (though maybe my company has), and it seems to
break every six months or so. So weird. Anyway, the problem is when I
try and launch FB3, I get the following message:

Could not create the Java virtual machine

Then I click the OK button and it quits.

So I thought, OK, I'll make sure I have Java installed, that I have the
latest installed. Nope, that didn't work (installing Java 6 and putting
the newer Java files into FB3's JRE folder) - so I moved the previous
ones back into the JRE folder. Right now, the JRE version installed in
my C:\Program Files\Adobe\Flex Builder 3\jre folder is version 6.

So then I thought maybe Java was messed up in my Eclipse folder, but I
couldn't find any Java references in there.

I see in my Java control panel (windows XP) that I have the following on
my system:

Platform:  1.6,  Product: 1.6.0_14, Path: C:Program
Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe  Enabled: true
Platform:  1.6,  Product: 1.6.0_5, Path: C:Program
Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\javaw.exe  Enabled: true
Platform:  1.4,  Product: 1.4.2_17, Path: C:Program
Files\Java\jre1.4.2_17\bin\javaw.exe  Enabled: true

Any clues on how to fix this? Thanks,

Tim, I have always thought of a model and a VO or DTO differently. I
think this is a good quick explanation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Transfer_Object

From an MVC perspective, I think a model class contains information
sure, but it can and often does contain methods to run logic on data, to
retrieve data, to broadcast that data is ready or changed, etc.

A Value Object (VO) or Data Transfer Object (DTO) - (two terms for the
same thing, I usually call them VOs because you don't always transfer
them per se) are simple classes that only contain properties that can be
get and/or set. They do not contain methods, constructors, or any other
form of logic. They are dumb in a sense, only serving as information
repositories. There is good logic in this I think. I use them all the
time. And I don't think they are only for moving data around in, they
are useful in single session storing of information. So often a model
contains references to (say in as a property which could be the VO
directly or several in an Array or ArrayCollection) and also may change
data within VOs, as well as broadcast when something changes.

That's my perspective anyway.

[flexcoders] Unloading/stopping sounds from SWFLoader .swf

2009-05-07 Thread Merrill, Jason
I'm having a problem getting sounds from .swfs (both AVM1 and AVM2) to
stop playing. I am adding these .swfs (loaded with SWFLoader) onto a
Canvas in my Flex application. The instance of my SWFLoader is
_swfLoader which I add as a child to the _demoCanvas Canvas. Here is
what I have tried (my lame attempt at garbage collection):

private function hideScreenAnimation():void
{
_swfLoader.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, onSwfLoaded);
_swfLoader.removeEventListener(Event.UNLOAD, onSwfUnload);
_swfLoader = null;
removeChild(_demoCanvas);
_demoCanvas = null;
SoundMixer.stopAll();
}

I can't seem to locate any unload() method for SWFLoader instances or
SWFLoader.content. SoundMixer.stopAll() seems to have no effect.
Again, these are both AVM1 and AVM2 .swfs which contain sounds. I don't
have any control over the AVM1 files, they are produced by someone else
using another app (Captivate and Camtasia). The AVM2 .swf is just a
simple .swf I made with Flash CS3 and contains a sound on the timeline.

Thanks, any help is appreciated. I've researched this enough with Google
and none of the suggestions I've found seem to work.

[flexcoders] RE: Unloading/stopping sounds from SWFLoader .swf

2009-05-07 Thread Merrill, Jason
Ah crap. To add on to this, this seems to be a bug that was only fixed
with the Flash 10 player: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-14379
- I have to target Flash 9. Is this really still an outstanding bug
with Flex 3 and Flash 9? That really bites.

[flexcoders] Questions about Canvas and TitleWindow

2009-05-04 Thread Merrill, Jason
I'm creating some components on the fly with Actionscript in an MXML
project.

1) For TitleWindow, where can I set the alpha of the surrounding
title bar area, or whatever it's called? By default, it looks to be
about 20% alpha.
2) For Canvas, how can I set the color? If I create it with code,
there is no color property (according to Flexbuilder), but if I use
MXML, there is. It inherits from Container, and UIComponent, so I don't
understand why with Actionscript's the compiler is giving an error that
there is no color property.

All I really want is a nice background container of some kind to hold a
.swf file - either one of these would see to do the job, if only I could
set those properties like I can in MXML. Why do the properties
available seem to be inconsistent between MXML and Actionscript?

Thanks,

[flexcoders] Flash player 10 Debug not recognized in FB3

2009-04-21 Thread Merrill, Jason
Subject says it all, but I have the Flash player 10 debug version
installed and when I go to debug my Flex app in Flexbuilder, it says,

Flexbuilder cannot locate the required version of Flash player. You
might need to install the debugger version of Flash player 9 or
re-install Flexbuilder.

Sometimes I can click yes to go ahead with previewing my flex app in
the browser, but if I have any debugging needs going on, like a simple
trace statement, it times out and says I need the debug version of the
player. I have 10.0.22.87 installed, which is a debug version (according
to Adobe's site anyway)

Any help?  Thanks.

[flexcoders] Flash e-learning list revived

2009-04-16 Thread Merrill, Jason
Hey everyone.

(Apologies in advance - I'm sorry that this is a blatant cross post to
more than one e-mail list. If anyone knows me, they know I despise
people who cross post questions on e-mail lists, or worse,
marketing/products, but this is neither and I think maybe this one is an
exception. I was going to e-mail each list individually anyway over
time, so I guess it doesn't matter.)

There was a discussion list that was in good use a while ago,
Flashelearning, and it slowly died from lack of participation (small
user base) back in the fall of 2007. Well, we've revived it and have
some good discussion started (a post this morning is about a cool
Flex-based drawing/collaboration/chat app for training people online).

The list would greatly compliment (NOT replace) this list if you do
e-learning / multimedia training work using Flash platform technologies
like Flash, Flex, Captivate, AIR, Camtasia, Articulate, FlashDevelop
etc. as well as general e-learning discussions on topics like SCORM,
AICC, accessibility Section 508, QTI, using Javascript, XML,
evaluation, inspiration, learner theory, etc. - though mostly focused on
using the Flash platform for creating e-learning.

You can subscribe to this e-mail list here:

http://www.freelists.org/list/flashelearning

If you're in the flash platform world and also work to deliver
e-learning, hope to see you both asking and answering questions there.

[flexcoders] XSLT Processor for AS3?

2009-03-12 Thread Merrill, Jason
I've asked this on several lists, and Twitter, never had a single reply
yet. Hoping someone here knows.

Is there an XSLT parser/processor for Actionscript 3? I would like an
Actionscript native one to transform some XML client-side. I have the
XSLT file for it already written, which I verified works fine
transforming with Javascript and IE browser's DOM, but I'm looking for
an Actionscript solution, not Javascript/IE, PHP or anything else.
Does this kind of class exist for Actionscript 3? If not, I'm surprised
nobody has written one - maybe just too much work?

In an ideal world, I am imagining someone has a class (or component)
that takes two arguments, an XML string or URL and an XSLT file, and
returns the transformed XML in the new format. Anyone know if this
thing exists or at least is being worked on by either Adobe or the os
community?

Thanks,

[flexcoders] Repeaters and Referencing Component IDs

2009-02-19 Thread Merrill, Jason
I have a repeater inside a Viewstack working fine. i.e., the Tree
component gets created over and over as expected, however, I would like
to access an array of all the mx:Image instances, so I can load images
into them with Actionscript later (the file name for the image is not
loaded into the app until after the repeater runs and the XML is
loaded).

I thought inside a repeater, the examples I have seen
(http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/using_the_repeater/  - see
the last example on that page) indicate that the id tag converts to an
array of each repeated component. However, when I trace _image.length
(ensuring I'm checking after Application.COMPLETE fires), it's always 1,
even though the dataprovider length for the repeater is 5. Here is the
relevant MXML part of my script:

mx:ViewStack selectedIndex={buttonBar.selectedIndex}
  mx:Repeater id=cubeSideRepeater dataProvider={arr}
 mx:VBox width={vBoxWidth} height={toggleButtonBarHeight}
backgroundColor={vBoxBackgroundColor}verticalAlign=middle
horizontalAlign=center hideEffect=cache showEffect=cube
 mx:HBox
  mx:Tree borderThickness=0 width={treeWidth}
height=100% dataProvider={_currentTreeNode} labelField=@label
itemClick=treeItemClicked(event) /
  mx:Spacer width=5/
  mx:Image id=_images /
 /mx:HBox
  /mx:VBox
   /mx:Repeater
/mx:ViewStack

How would you handle this?

[flexcoders] Best way to toggle elements in ArrayCollections

2009-01-27 Thread Merrill, Jason
So in my Flex 3 project I have an ArrayCollection, like this:

[Bindable]
private var myDataProvider:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(
[
{country:Apple, quantity:5},
{country:Pear, quantity:3},
{country:Banana, quantity:7},
]);

This is the dataprovider for another visual component (this is not the
actual data, I've simplified it for the sake of clarity in asking this
question). I have some checkboxes that I want to use to toggle elements
in and out of the arrayCollection, thus changing what's shown in the
visual component which is bound by databinding. I thought about just
having a visual property in the dataprovider, but then found out I
cannot access display list items in this third party chart component I
am using, so the only way to change what is shown in the chart component
is to change what's contained in the array collection.

My question is, while I can think of ways to do this (adding and
removing elements in the ArrayCollection), but they all involve some
pretty ugly Actionscript. Is there a good way to handle this, but keep
my data intact? How would you use checkboxes to toggle data in and out
of the ArrayCollection elegantly?

Thanks,

Jason Merrill

[flexcoders] OT: FP Ubiquity Stats Lack Silverlight Comparison

2008-09-23 Thread Merrill, Jason
Excuse the mild OT, just curious if anyone knows why Microsoft
Silverlight stats are not included here in penetration comparisons:

http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/

It would seem to me, with Silverlight having fairly low penetration
stats I would imagine (even after the Olympics) that this would be a
huge marketing plus for Adobe. Millward Brown, commissioned by Adobe,
did the survey just this past June, it seems silly the product most
closely competing with the Flash Player is Silverlight and it's not
included in the comparison.

And if someone at Adobe is listening, this is important since this page
is linked to from some Creative Suite 4 promo pages on the site, for
example, the page touting Illustrator's Flash player capabilities:

http://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator/?promoid=BPDEG

Anyway, just a mild rant for the day. J Maybe someone can pass this on
to the right folks at Adobe.

[flexcoders] Re: .swf displays fine, but MovieClip methods fail

2008-08-14 Thread Merrill, Jason
I searched embed swf moviecliploaderasset and the third result was an
example from colin moock that had the secret sauce in it

Thanks Alex - I think the problem in my search was that I didn't know when you
[Embed] a swf, it loaded the .swf into MovieClipLoaderAsset when the clip was
embedded into the .swf to begin with. So I would have never searched on that
term. Are you presenting at Max? I'd be interested in attending one of your
sessions, you've provided a lot of answers to me in the past.

This example may also help

Thanks Amy, that seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Looks like it's
much funkier and more complicated than you would think communicating with an
AVM2  .swf file.

[flexcoders] .swf displays fine, but MovieClip methods fail

2008-08-13 Thread Merrill, Jason
I'm displaying some sprites inside a Flex 3 container with Actionscript. So
far on this project, the sprites I have been showing have been visually drawn
on the screen either by embedding an image or by drawing with sprite.graphics
methods. Now, I'm trying to embed a .swf, and it works (it displays and plays),
but MovieClip method actions attempting to control the embedded .swf fail.

My first thought was I published as AM1 on accident, but the .swf is AVM2 -
Flash CS3 published as Player 9 and Actionscript 3. The .swf contains an
animation on it's root, no child clips. See the comments in the code below
(this is a simplified version of the class, I stripped out everything I thought
was irrelevant to my question). Does it have to do with a MovieClip being a
child to a Sprite? If so, why? If not, what's the issue with the code below?

package com.venice.view.network.atom
{
import flash.display.MovieClip;
import flash.display.Sprite;

public class AtomView extends Sprite
{
private var _menu:MovieClip;

[Embed(source = /media/buttons/atomMenu.swf)]
[Bindable]
private var _menuSource:Class;

public function AtomView()
{
createSprites();
}

private function createSprites():void
{
//this works fine, the menu.swf appears:
_menu = new _menuSource() as MovieClip;
addChild(_menu);

//however, the following MovieClip actions don't work.
//For example, (when uncommented), the following
actions
//have no effect on the root timeline:
//
//_menu.stop();
//
//or if I put a stop action on the .swf
timeline, these don't work either:
//_menu.nextFrame();
//or
//_menu.play();
//
//why? It's a Flash 9/Actionscript 3.0 .swf created
with Flash CS3.
}
}
}

Thanks for any help.

[flexcoders] Re: problem adding images to UIComponents using AS3

2008-08-01 Thread Merrill, Jason
OK, let me back up here. First, thanks to those who responded. So I thought
by isolating my problem with an example (heck, I'm not even using Canvas) it
would shed light on why this bug is occuring, but it isn't unfortunately, I'm
more or less confusing the real problem with y'all. Sorry. So maybe what I
thought was the problem was instead something else.

Here is my actual project code, and a description of the setup. The problem
is, the image is not getting attached to the sprite, even though the sprite is
showing up in the display list just fine (the graphics draw from code - but the
image doesn't show). I know the path to the image is right, I can use the same
embed and new Image() code elsewhere in my app to make the image appear. Here
is the code and the setup in the application:

package com.venice.view.network.groupingTool
{
import flash.display.Sprite;
import mx.controls.Image;

public class GroupHandle extends Sprite
{
public var id:int;

public const FILL_COLOR:uint = 0xff;
public const FILL_ALPHA:Number = .5;
public const STROKE_COLOR:uint = 0x00;
public const STROKE_THICKNESS:Number = 1;
public const STROKE_ALPHA:Number = 1.0;
public const SIZE:Number = 10;

[Embed(source = /media/icons/control_repeat_blue.png)]
[Bindable]
private var _moveGroupImage:Class;

public function GroupHandle():void
{
//this works:
graphics.clear();
graphics.lineStyle(STROKE_THICKNESS, STROKE_COLOR,
STROKE_ALPHA);
graphics.beginFill(FILL_COLOR, FILL_ALPHA);
graphics.drawRect(-(SIZE/2), -(SIZE/2), SIZE/2, SIZE/2);
graphics.endFill();

//this doesn't:
var icon:Image = new Image();
icon.source = _moveGroupImage;
addChild(icon);
}
}
}

This class, GroupHandle.as, which extends Sprite, is added in the display list
in my application as follows:

Application (main MXML)network (Panel based MXML component)
groupsLayerUI (a UIComponent, necessary because it's added to a Panel
container) groupingTool (.as class that extends Sprite) groupHandle (.as
class that extends Sprite)

The groupsLayerUI UIComponent seems to be fine holding other content, and even
in the groupHandle, it renders drawn graphics just fine. Just not the image.
Even if I size the UIComponent, it doesn't work. It's not making any sense to
me why this image doesn't appear in this sprite, even though it will appear in
other places in my app, and even though other graphics in the sprite appear
fine. I thought maybe it had something to do with also drawing on the same
sprite, but that's not it either, I removed that code and it still fails to
load the embedded image. Can someone figure out what could be wrong? Thanks.

[flexcoders] Re: problem adding images to UIComponents using AS3

2008-08-01 Thread Merrill, Jason
You can draw those graphics in a UIComponent so I would
have grouphandle subclass UIComponent and not Sprite.

Thanks Alex, I tried that, but still no joy, AND the graphics don't render now
either for some strange reason. All I did is change my previously posted code
to: public class GroupHandle extends UIComponent (and I also imported
UIComponent of course). Here is the class, still not showing the image.
Thanks for any further help you can provide:

package com.venice.view.network.groupingTool
{
import mx.controls.Image;
import mx.core.UIComponent;

public class GroupHandle extends UIComponent
{
public const FILL_COLOR:uint = 0xff;
public const FILL_ALPHA:Number = .5;
public const STROKE_COLOR:uint = 0x00;
public const STROKE_THICKNESS:Number = 1;
public const STROKE_ALPHA:Number = 1.0;
public const SIZE:Number = 10;

[Embed(source = /media/icons/control_repeat_blue.png)]

[flexcoders] problem adding images to UIComponents using AS3

2008-07-31 Thread Merrill, Jason
I don't get why this code is failing, it's reproducible if you put an image in
the path shown below. (This isn't the actual code in my app, I just isolated a
problem and made the problem reproducible it here. In my real app, it's
failing to embed an image into a class that is added to a UI component. The
class extends Sprite).

The first Image class instance declared with MXML embeds the image just fine.
The second, using a UIComponent and adding an instance of the image class to it
fails. Why? See comments in the code below:

?xml version=1.0?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;

mx:Script
![CDATA[
import mx.controls.Image;

[Embed(source = /media/icons/help.png)]
[Bindable]
private var myHelpImageSource:Class;

private function initUI():void
{
var myHelpImage:Image = new Image();
myHelpImage.source = myHelpImageSource;
myUIComponent.addChild(myHelpImage);
trace(initUI called.)//traces fine
}

]]
/mx:Script

mx:Panel width=100% height=100%
mx:Canvas width=600 height=500

!-- this works to embed the image--
mx:Image source={myHelpImageSource} x=50 y=50 /

!-- this fails to embed the image using ActionScript
above - why? --
mx:UIComponent id=myUIComponent
creationComplete=initUI() x=100 y=100 /

/mx:Canvas

[flexcoders] ColorPicker.selectedColor to #hex

2008-07-24 Thread Merrill, Jason
I don't mean for this to be a cross-post, I sent it to Flashcoders
accidentally.
This must have been done many times before. How can I translate the
ColorPicker.selectedValue to a 6 digit hex number? i.e. if the color
selected is, 66, if I trace ColorPicker.selectedColor, traces 102. I
tried gooling for an Actionscript hex converter, but didn't come up with
anything. This is in order to display the selected hex# to the user as
#006699, not to manipulate the number.

Thanks.

Thanks guys, here was my solution:

public static function decimalToHexidecimal(number:Number,
upperCase:Boolean=false, addPound:Boolean=false, addOx:Boolean=false ):String
{
var hexString:String = Number(number).toString(16);
while (hexString.length  6) hexString = 0 + hexString;
if (addPound) hexString = # + hexString;
if (addOx) hexString = 0x + hexString;
if (upperCase) hexString = hexString.toUpperCase();
return hexString;
}

[flexcoders] Re: remover water mark from Trial version

2008-07-03 Thread Merrill, Jason
The OP needs to buy a license to the charting components if they want to
compile them. Compiliing them for someone else is illegal. The license is for
single-use only. You could argue, well, I compiled some source code with a
legal copy, so it's legal,- I don't think Adobe's lawyers would see it that
way. You're compiling somene else's project so they can get around the license
issue, and I think that gets pretty dicey. Imagine if someone setup a
business, Hey, I'll compile your flex project for you for $9.95, so you never
have to buy the full Pro version with charting. Hmph. Even if you could get
away with it legally, I think it's fairly unethical. But then there are the
types who don't buy music or movies either.

[flexcoders] Setting up custom component listener

2008-06-30 Thread Merrill, Jason
Such a stupid question. I am trying to assign a listener to a custom
component. It broadcasts a simple event. Here is a dumbed-down version of the
code I am using:

mx:Application applicationComplete=init()
xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
xmlns:c=com.project.components.*
mx:Script
![CDATA[
private function init():void
{
myComponent.addEventListner(myEvent, onMyEvent);
}

private function onMyEvent():void
{
trace(onMyEvent heard.)
}
]]
/mx:Script
c:MyComponent id=myComponent/
/mx:Application

!--Here is a simplified version of the component: --
!--com/project/components/MyComponent.mxml: --
mx:Canvas xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml;
mx:Script
![CDATA[
import flash.events.EventDispatcher;
import flash.events.Event;

private function broadcastClicked():void
{
dispatchEvent(new Event(myEvent))
}
]]
/mx:Script
mx:Checkbox click=broadcastClicked()/
/mx:Canvas

However, I get a runtime error for the init() event that myComponent is null.
I would have thought that calling it on applicationComplete would ensure that
the instance of my component was there. Why not and how instead do I add the
listener for it?  Thankya

[flexcoders] One custom component referring to another

2008-06-27 Thread Merrill, Jason
I thought this would be simple - having one custom display object modify
another through a reference:

mx:Application
c:MyComponentA /
c:MyComponentB /
/mx:Application

I want to have MyComponentA refer to objects/methods inside of MyComponentB. I
tried passing a reference in:

mx:Application
c:MyComponentA id=myComponentA /
c:MyComponentB componentToModify={myComponentA}/
/mx:Application

But I get an error saying, Access of possibly undefined property myComponentA
through a reference with static type flash.display:DisplayObject.

I tried calling parent.myComponentA from actionscript inside of
MyComponentB.MXML, but it couldn't find the instance of myComponentA.

How do you handle this? I know this probably isn't ideal architecture, but
would there have to be scripts that listen for events in one component in the
main app and then modify the other component? I guess I could do that if it is
best practice. I need the two components to be separated because they are two
different parts of the UI, but need to interact. One has controls that change
the view and data in the other. Does it have to modify the other component
from actionscript on the main app or can I just pass a reference into one
component like I have tried?

Thanks.

Well, we're using Cairngorm on this project, so I think I'm going to use
Cairngorm events and commands and centralize this, instead of trying to
establish any tight coupling between components. It's a control bar with
checkboxes effecting the view of another visual componet in another part of the
app.  Thanks everyone, great discussion.

RE: [flexcoders] best way to update a display object's VO's x and y props?

2008-04-03 Thread Merrill, Jason
Why not read in the initial X and Y values of the VO, then as it's
dragged, update the X and Y values back in the VO. Seems simple setters
and getter functions or public properties could handle that unless I'm
missing something. Then when you want to send the VO data back, it's
already updated.

2008-04-03 Thread Merrill, Jason
So Microsoft is presenting at Universities, and Adobe isn't. Well,
unfortunately for Adobe, Microsoft has huge financial pockets, which is
the greatest threat to the Flash platform in my opinion. I'm not saying
Adobe can't promote Flash/Flex at universities, but it's certainly true
they don't have anywhere near the amount of resources Microsoft has to
promote products. I think Adobe will have to use some creative
marketing strategies to better compete with the massive Silverlight push
Microsoft is developing.

Flash CS3 works fine with all web services (i dont know about

Hi

I want to use Cairngorm for a project we are going to start but in this
site: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Cairngorm
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Cairngorm  I only see versions
for Flex 2.

I'd like to know if there is a new version for Flex 3 coming soon or
what's going to happen with Cairngorm.

[flexcoders] Topcoders and Flexcoders

2008-03-26 Thread Merrill, Jason
I just read this interesting artivle on ZDNet today on Topcoders, and
they mention Flex developers are one of the types of developers
Topcoders taps into.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/enterprisealley/?p=124tag=nl.e622

Is anyone on this list linked into TopCoders as a developer, and if so,
what has the experience been like?

You can just add a sprite to a container and draw on that with basic

I agree with Kerry - moderation makes for a much nicer list. It
sometimes means your first posts are stuck in a queue for a little while
until the moderators get to it (especially on weekends), but it does
help to keep the list realtively spam free, helpful and overrun with
recruiters. Just this morning for this list I removed two nasty spam

[flexcoders] FB2 Keyboard Shortcut to insert variables/member names?

2008-03-21 Thread Merrill, Jason
I looked in the Key Assist in Flexbuilder 2 and the help and online,
couldn't find this shortcut. At least, wasn't obvious to me what it was
called. Very useful if it exists:

Anyone know if there is a keyboard shortcut in the code editor for
inserting a variable or method name (FB2)? I would imagine you could
hit a key combination and get a list of public and private variables in
the class, as well as names of public and private functions, which you
could select from, hit enter and FB would insert it at the cursor. I get
tired of looking up at the top of my class and trying to remember what I
called something and then either typing or copying and pasting - any way
to do this?  Thanks.

2008-03-21 Thread Merrill, Jason
And to clarify further, I don't mean code hinting once you type the
class instance or static name myClass.[Hint] or MyClass.[hint] -
what I mean is if you are on a blank line and you want to insert a
member name from the same class:

private var _b:String;

private function a():void
{
junk()
moreJunk();
[Codehint/auto-insert for _b]  //==new blank line
}

I can see this stuff in the Outline, but I would like to insert members
via a keyboard shortcut.

RE: [flexcoders] Loading an image file and then a swf file in sequence

2008-02-26 Thread Merrill, Jason
All you need to do is read up on how to do three things:

1) Load and use XML data
2) Load a .swf file, add it to the display list
3) Use the Timer class

If you search those three topics in the Flex help, you should have
enough info to accomplish this.

Well, that would be a little tough in this case, since
FlexBuilder is a plug-in for Eclipse (even the standalone version), and
Eclipse is pure Java. So Intel vs. PowerPC isn't actually an issue.

I would like to know if the date of release for FLEX
Builder 3 is close enough that I would get a free upgrade if I purchase
FLEX Builder 2 today?

I'm sure you're not the only one who would like to know that.
But Adobe doesn't announce its official release date ahead of time, and
they don't announce their upgrade policies until the release.

But I need to know now as I have a contract opportunity,
but I don't want to pay, then just pay all over againhow soon is it
to FLEX Builder 3 release date (not beta, but stable release for sale on
the site).

First off, you shouldn't worry so much about the beta. Adobe has
announced that it is the final beta, and many people are already
building production applications with it.

Second, Adobe has said publicly that the release of FlexBuilder
3 will occur sometime around the middle of the first quarter. Given the
fact that today is February 22 -- and given the fact that the 360Flex
conference begins on Monday, and Adobe has promised a major
announcement at the conference -- I don't think you'll have to wait too
long.

Global is bad and went directly against OOP. To do it right, you want
your component to broadcast an event, and the other componet to listen

Yes, using global variables was easy solution to referencing
movieclips from anywhere.

I'm trying to link up my play button to play the selected track
in a
listbox. The two components are in separate classes.

one solution is that in my main class I pass a reference of the
listbox to my playbutton.

Are there alternative solutions to this...Better OOP practice.

Dang, for some reason our internal proxy servers categorize the
www.uflash.org URL as computer crime - for some odd reason, I don't
know why. I can't access it from work.

Thanks though, I did see in FB2 I could just hit CTRL+SHIFT+L and all
the key shortcuts come up.

Last time I needed the scrollbars property of a component I
found that the scrollbar was protected - so had to extend the component
itself and add methods to get scrollbar width etc.

Right, but I mean I can't seem to find the method or properties
to find the panel's scrollbars in the Panel content area - nothing I
could find in the help docs.

Got it working because I made the dumb mistake of calling width
on the UIComponent instead of the panel itself.

working now.

By the way, is there a way to get the scrollbar's width (for the
vertical scrollbar) and height style (for the horizontal scroll bar) in
the container form of the panel?

You're probably not taking in account the panel's border
thickness properties. When you get the panel's width it's including the
border (not just where the content is being drawn like youre imagining).
To get the true width of the content area youd need to subtract
getStyle(borderThicknessRight) and getStyle(borderThicknessLeft).
Hope this helps

   _flowchart.x = (width/2)-(_flowchart/2);

Right, but I mean I can't seem to find the method or properties to find
the panel's scrollbars in the Panel content area - nothing I could find

Got it working because I made the dumb mistake of calling width on the

linkText.addEventListener(TextEvent.LINK, linkEvent);

Hi guys,

I'm new at Flex3/AS3 and I'm already stuck at what I thought
would be a simple hello world script:

GOAL:
A flex app with a button. When the button is hit it a simple
shape (rectangle) would appear to the screen.

PROPOSAL (doesn't work):

draw.mxml:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml  layout=absolute
mx:Scriptimport DrawApp;/mx:Script
mx:Script
![CDATA[
function drawNow():void{
var myRectangle:DrawApp = new DrawApp();
}
]]
/mx:Script
mx:Button label=draw click=drawNow()/mx:Button
/mx:Application

DrawApp.as:

package {

import flash.display.*;

class DrawApp extends Sprite
{
public function DrawApp()
{
 var rectAndCircle:Shape=new Shape();
rectAndCircle.graphics.lineStyle(1);
rectAndCircle.graphics.beginBitmapFill(0xFF,1);
rectAndCircle.graphics.drawRect(125,0,150,75);
addChild(rectAndCircle);
}
}

}

When I compile this in FB3 I've got 1067 error codes beginning
with rectAndCircle.graphics.beginBitmapFill(0xFF,1);

Any idea what I'm missing here?

Thanks

Sharepoint I think is mostly web services but it's possible that
WebORB for .NET or Flourine could help with that as well and provide
better performance.

Sharepoint has a huge Webservices API, but it also has a more direct API
integration with .NET. I don't know the exact details on that though,

RE: [flexcoders] Adobe People, Save me from Silverlight!

2008-02-12 Thread Merrill, Jason
Here is a lot written by Jesse Warden on Silverlight from his Flash/Flex
perspective:  http://jessewarden.com/category/silverlight

Also, here is a list I compiled last summer after speaking with a
Silverlight engineer. Some things in Silverlight may have changed since
then, hope this helps some.

Pros
Integrates very very well with .NET/Visual Studio
Programming in C#, VisualBasic, Javascript, Python, or Ruby - CLR
(Common Language Runtime)
Easier for .NET developers to start developing for than Flash
Microsoft deep-pocket backing and product integration
All code remains external, no republishing after coded update like you
do with Flash
Runs on Mac OSX, Windows XP and Vista

Cons
Requires programming in C#, Javascript (inconsistent across browsers),
VisualBasic, Python, or Ruby
Not geared towards multimedia artists, learning community
Not supported or pushed by the bank, virtually no market penetration
outside the bank
Not a mature product, not market-tested
Does not integrated with Adobe's creative design tools
Is not currently supported on Cell phones and several PDAs
Does not support Flash media (.swf or .flv) i.e. Captivate or Articulate
Visual experiences demo'ed so far are not nearly as impressive as Flash
Silverlight is geared more towards RIA development, so it's more of a
Flex competitor than standard Flash
Does not run on older Mac OS, Linux and older versions of Windows
Does not support alpha channel video
CD and local drive Silverlight runtime not available as publishing
option
Expression Designer, Expression Blend used to design Siliverlight
applications are immature tools and lack many features compared to CS3
products
Not as easy to develop for those who are not familiar with .NET, or
Javascript
Flash video is primary format of major video sites like YouTube and
Google Video, not Microsoft WMV
Unfamiliar design environment for Flash developers to migrate to
Does not immediately stream - requires XAML to parse first.
Some Flash developers say Siliverlight has 80% fewer features than
Flash. While this number may be inaccurate, a Silverlight rep did
confirm Silverlight has fewer features than Flash runtime.
No free opensource development options
No 3D possible (Flash has Papervision or Sandy 3d and other Opensource
3D Libraries available)
No deep-linking possible yet
h.264 Video support
Javascript only development right now - (all Visual Studio languages
coming soon)

I'm a flex developer who just joined a .NET development group.
We
make internal apps but are going to grow our group and have an
e-commerce subset.

Everyone on my team has seen my flex apps and they understand
the
power. BUT, they want to do a formal review of Flex vs
Silverlight
before we buy a bunch of adobe software and go down that path.
Included in the debate is Photoshop vs Expressions (I know I
know).

Although I love .NET for the back end I think that flex should
be used
for our RIA solutions.

I was hoping that the fine hard working folks at Adobe already
have a
document that clearly lays out the advantages of Flex over
Silverlight. If so, I would greatly appreciate it being sent to
me.

Here are some things that people are concerned about.

Sharepoint integration (this is a big #1)
SEO
Workflow updates (designer/developer)
Is licensing available?
Flash player 9 adoption

Although I know the answers to most of these questions I think
any
document from Adobe would say it better than I could.

My boss is flying to Redmond this afternoon for a meeting with
Microsoft. Although it's not about Silverlight he is going to
ask
them about it and I'm sure they will try to give him some
kool-aid.

I'm making a Flex introduction presentation for developers today
for a
meeting on Thursday. So speed on this request is greatly
appreciated.

Thanks so much, please save me from programing in silver light
and
expressions for the next 5 years.

Yes, when repeater instantiates components, it creates a array
of ids for each specific id, so each mySlider has an id mySlider[n]
where n is the index of the item.

The cleanest way to deal with this is to create a custom
component containing all the components and repeat that component. Pass
in a reference to the entire currentItem into a typed setter function.

You will find that doing this simplifies repeater work
immensely, especially when you need to dispatch an event and access the
dataProvider item in the handler. You will not need getRepeaterItem().

Subject: RE: [flexcoders] Databinding in component

Below are some snippets.

Tracy

When working with Repeater, I advise creating a custom component
that you will repeat, and pass it the entire currentItem, In the
component, implement a setter function to receive the currentItem
data.

Now, in the component, you can code normally, binding to the
data as you wish, without the hard to read currentItem references. You
also avoid the binding warnings without the cast/conversion because the
binding source is a true XML object.

And, you can dispatch events normally. In the event handler,
you can reference the component via the event.target property, and thus
get a direct reference to the dataProvider item. This is easier to
write and read than having to use getRepeaterItem().

Here are some code snippets:

In the main app or component (note how clean and readable this
is):

mx:Application

mx:VBox ...

  mx:Repeater id=rp dataProvider={_xmlData} ...

mycomp:MyRepeatedComponent xmlItem={rp.currentItem} .../

  /mx:Repeater

/mx:VBox

And in the component, MyRepeatedComponent.mxml:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?

mx:HBox ...

mx:Script![CDATA[

  [Bindable]private var _xmlItem:XML;

  public function set xmlData(xml:XML):void

  {

_xmlItem = xml;

//do any special, non-bound ui stuff you want

  }//

]]/mx:Script

  !-- Now declare the Item UI --

  mx:Text id=lbDescription text=[EMAIL PROTECTED]
width=100% height=100% /

Goal: Display a list of items using a complex display for each
item, and have each of those items behave like a menu element and
respond to a click anywhere on the item by running a handler function.

One solution is to use a Repeater with a custom component

In the main app or component, declare the Repeater, and the
click handler function.

mx:Application ...

mx:Script![CDATA[

  import MyRepeaterItem;

  ...

private function onRPItemClick(oEvent:Event):void

{

var xmlItem:XML = XML(oEvent.target);

}//onRPItemClick

]]/mx:Script

  mx:VBox ...

mx:Repeater id=rp dataProvider={_xmlData} ...

  !-- Note we pass in the entire currentItem, and define a
click handler  --

  MyRepeaterItem xmlItem={rp.currentItem}
itemClick=onRPItemClick(event) .../

/mx:Repeater

  /mx:VBox

/mx:Application

And in the component, MyRepeaterItem.mxml:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?

mx:HBox mouseChildren=false buttonMode=true
click=onClick(event)

  !-- The metadata tag below allows us to define an itemClick
handler in mxml, as in the code above --

  mx:Metadata

 [Event(name=itemClick, type=flash.events.Event)]

  /mx:Metadata

mx:Script![CDATA[

  [Bindable]private var _xmlItem:XML;

  /** Setter function */

  public function set xmlItem(xml:XML):void

  {

_xmlItem = xml;

//do any special, non-bound ui stuff you want

  }//set xmlItem

  /** Getter function */

  public function get xmlItem():XML

  {

return _xmlItem;

  }//get xmlItem

  /** Outer VBox Click handler function */

  private function onClick():void

  {

dispatchEvent(new Event(itemClick,false); //we do not
need/want this event to bubble

  }//onClick

]]/mx:Script

  !-- Now declare the Item UI --

  mx:Text id=lbDescription text=[EMAIL PROTECTED]
width=100% height=100% /

/mx:HBox

Thanks Tracy, I'll try that route.

use a spacer in the middle with width=100%.

RE: [flexcoders] DataGrid limit on amount of records or data?

2008-02-11 Thread Merrill, Jason
 As a side note, taking a step back, why would you want to present
that
 many records at a time to the user? It seems anything above a few
 hundred is overly cumbersome to wade through, and should perhaps
 instead be filtered further. No?

True in most cases I guess, but I can think of a few use cases where Id

want to load a severe amount of data. Can you? (-;

No, I guess I can't think of cases when showing 10,000 records with no
filtering would be important in a Flex app. What examples were you
thinking of?

Thanks - as you can see in my original post, I did try the second method
you mentioned (horizontalAlign), but it failed. The first one works
(though it seems slightly like a bit of a hack). Thanks.

/mx:HBox

OR

mx:Hbox

!-- objects left aligned--
mx:HBox horizontalAlign=left
.
