[flexcoders] 360 Flex Community Survey - Only 3 Questions.

2007-10-23 Thread Tariq Ahmed
All,

I noticed a posting on the 360 Flex blog regarding a survey they'd like
more feedback on regarding what people want in a conference, and what
360 should be prioritizing on.

It's just 3 questions:

[flexcoders] *** 1st Bi-Annual Flex Coders Pulse Survey ***

2007-01-22 Thread Tariq Ahmed
In order for Evangelists (both independent supporters of Flex, Flex
activists, Community Experts, and Adobe employed Evangelists) to focus
their efforts, this survey is designed to capture the pulse of the Flex
Ecosystem.

Please invite as many people as you know to fill it out. Whether you're
on the fence and evaluating Flex, or a hard-core Flex developer, all
opinions count.

Survey results will be made publicly available, and hopefully help
tailor many efforts to match where the community currently is.

Hello everyone...

I think this is an extreme complicate issue.
Flex is based on Flash Player. At least in Brazil, softwares made in
Flash is "the coolest but not functional", "funny intros" or "games in
flash" and such. Is very difficult find some real developer for Flash
who really knows AS. And those, charge a fortune.

Based on that, and the plus that Adobe is "the photoshop company", make
a little difficult that clients believe on Flex.
I read on a blog (sorry, dont remember where) that the better way of
sell an application on Flex, is not mention a word about flash player,
flex, macromedia or adobe. You tell the client what amazing things he
will have with this new technology and, after he go nuts, then you tell
him that the Big Adobe is who sign the tools.

Then you have other issue. Here, at least, the project managers have
the tendency to new technologies. But not new as meaning "the best"...
new as meaning "microsofts the best". I never agree with this vision,
but one project manager told me something interesting: "when you buy a
new car, you want the 'top most' from that well know company... you
dont want something old, or refurbished."

I think that Adobe is on the right path. Gaining territory from below.
Making those project managers accept Flex before final clients. Making
those project managers indicate Flex for the applications.
Then, when clients begin to think in Flex before ask for an study, we
will have those 1.000.000 developers on stand buy :)

Today, at least here in Brazil, we dont have much developers, so there
is no logic start selling projects without competent developers or we
will only mark adobes flex as a bad product for the clients (this
happen with dotNet and Java here in Brazil).

I'd agree to that. The marketing effort seems to heavily rely on the

To Restate Adobe's Goal: 1 000 000 Flex Developers by 2010.

Some HEAVY DUTY marketing is needed. It definitely made sense to

And it's not just about the mindshare of Developers that need to be
focused on. It's more important to capture the minds of those who
control the budget and cash flow. The Directors and VPs. All they keep
hearing about is AJAX, so from a strategic point of view you want to go
with what is perceived as mass adoption (so that the support system is
there, and that there's a large talent pool to draw/recruit from).

I personally want people to start believing that Flex is the industrial
strength solution, vs some "niche" boutique technology.

Re: [flexcoders] SQL Server and Flex 2

2006-10-03 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Joe, the first learning step to just get something going is to write
.NET/ASP pages that output simple XML that your Flex app consumes. In
the Flex Docs lookup stuff on "HTTPService". Using HTTPService you can
just connect to any URL that spits back XML, and then in Flex you can
work with that XML data.

mx:HTTPService id="srv" url="" class="moz-txt-link-rfc2396E" href="http://localhost/somexml.asp">"http://localhost/somexml.asp"
useProxy="false" /

And you could then display the results in a datagrid

 mx:DataGrid dataProvider="{srv.lastResult.emps.employee}"
editable="true"
 mx:columns
 mx:Array
 mx:DataGridColumn dataField="first"
headerText="First" editable="true" width="60"/
 mx:DataGridColumn dataField="last"
headerText="Last" width="60"/

 /mx:Array
 /mx:columns
 /mx:DataGrid

Where the XML output looks something like:

?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?
emps
 employee
  firstJeff/first
  lastSmith/last
 /employee
 employee
  firstJohn/first
  lastDoe/last
 /employee
/emps

BUT... ultimately you want to use WebServices, which is almost exactly
the same from the Flex side. But there may be some challenges with how
.NET WebServices handle certain object/data types.

Joe wrote:

  Okay,
I'm pretty new to the Flex scene and am very impressed with the
development so far. My company is wanting to start developing a
database application using an Ajax technology and realize I'm a little
behind the curve since Flex applications don't access data like the
.net applications I normally develop. We've already bought Flex
Builder 2.0 and I am being pushed to develop there.

So far the interface design and interaction development I'm catching,
but with the data access I'm lost.

Does anyone have any idea where to begin? I've tried browsing the
forums and just keep getting more confused, and all of the examples
I've found on the web don't use IIS/MSSQL.

Please Help!

[flexcoders] ADOBE: Version of Distributable Player is Incorrect

2006-09-01 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Adobe,

- I'm working with my customer to get Flash 9 installed on all their
desktops.
- It took our I.T dept days to get a push package going that silently
uninstalled Flash 8 and installed Flash 9

The problem now is the distributable version of the Flash Player is
9.0.0.296, and Flex requires 9.0.16.0.

Can you update that?

Thanks.

[flexcoders] Flex2-IIS-7.0.2 HTTP 405 on /flex2gateway/

2006-08-10 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Anyone encounter this issue before?

When using a RemoteObject, which works fine on my development
environment - doesn't work on this one server. Flash Remoting is
enabled in the CF Admin.

Looking at the IIS Log FIle, the 405 is coming from invoking
/flex2gateway/

On machines that work, I can do http://hostname/flex2gateway and get at
least an HTTP 500, but get a 404 on this problem machine.

The main diff on the problem machine is that it's hosting multiple
sites. Does anyone know how to set up a manual mapping to
/flex2gateway/ (what does it map to?).

I found this thread:
http://www.boyzoid.com/blog/index.cfm/2006/3/24/Flex-Builder-2Mystic-and-Multiple-URLs-on-one-server

Which indicates that JVM higher than 1.4.2_05 is needed. This machine
uses 1.4.2_09.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex2-IIS-7.0.2 HTTP 405 on /flex2gateway/

2006-08-10 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Hi Joao, thanks for the response!

So this is a single server/integrated install. The
c:\CFusionMX7\wwwroot\web-inf\web.xml has:

 servlet-mapping id="macromedia_mapping_0"
  servlet-nameMessageBrokerServlet/servlet-name
  url-pattern/flex2gateway/*/url-pattern
 /servlet-mapping

I also tried modifying use-mappingstrue/use-mappings in
services-config.xml, but to no avail...

I don't think it's on the CF side, it seems as if IIS is blocking it
before CF gets it.

[flexcoders] [Flex2] Setting Legend direction programmatically?

2006-08-09 Thread Tariq Ahmed
So I have a legend:

mx:Legend id=chartLegend direction=horizontal /

And depending on certain events, I programmtically manage the legend
items (new Legenditem(), chartLegend.addChild type deal). And that all
works fine. The only issue is that the direction is always vertical.
Doing a chartLegend.direction='horizontal' in AS doesn't make a
difference.

Any ideas?

[flexcoders] Using Repeater to produce multiple chart series? [Flex 2]

2006-08-02 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Hey all, does anyone have a simple example on how to produce multiple
series in a chart based on an arraycollection?

mx:LineChart id=linechart
dataProvider={chartData}
mx:horizontalAxismx:CategoryAxis
categoryField=time//mx:horizontalAxis

mx:series
  mx:Repeater id=myRep dataProvider={servers}
mx:LineSeries id=info
yField={myRep.currentItem.dataField} form=curve
displayName={myRep.currentItem.Title}/
  /mx:Repeater
/mx:series
/mx:LineChart

Trying to do something like the above. I get a Type Coercion
failed...cannot convert mx.core:Repeater to
mx.charts.charClasses.iChartElement.

Seems like I can't use a repeater that way. What's the proper approach here?

Thx!

Figured it out. The approach to use is with actionscript to dynamically
create LineSeries objects, and add them to the LineChart's series array.

I'll post an example.

Re: [flexcoders] can I use older ver of CF with Flex 2

2006-07-14 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Hi Clint, I can't give a definitive answer. But back in the early early
early days when for Flex 2 there was just going to be a CF-Flex
Adapter, I tested to see if Flex 2 would work without any
upgrades/patches - and for simple stuff it worked. Though no idea what
issues you'll run into with the current version.

Your safest route may be to use cfc's as a webservice until your hosted
solution upgrades.

Re: [flexcoders] PAIN - Debugging ColdFusion CFC Flex service call

2006-06-27 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Hi Erich.

For Flex 1.5 use the Flash Trace Viewer:
http://www.alexisisaac.net/flash/articles/flash-7-trace-viewer.html

It was my best friend for monitoring traffic to and from Flex and CFCs.

For Flex 2, as well as 1.5..there's my new best friend: ServiceCapture:

Flex service call

  Yesterday I was debugging
a situation where a Flex service call to a ColdFusion CFC wasn’t
returning any records.  Using netConnection Debugger and ServiceCapture
yielded the same information.  The particular query in question (within
the CFC) being returned was “undefined”.  In actuality, there was a bug
several lines before the query that was faulting, thereby causing the
query to never get executed and thus causing the variable (recordset)
from said query to never get defined.

  Basically my problem was
Flex never returned the proper error.  I had to hunt through the CFC,
dropping in random CFDUMPS or CFFILE statement (to dump variables to a
log file) to try to find out what the problem was.  I actually had to
use a CF application written to invoke the CFC to see what the
ColdFusion debugging output looked like.

  I am using Flex 1.5 at
the moment.  Has anyone found better ways to debug using Flex 1.5, and
ColdFusion 7.0.1 CFC’s?

[flexcoders] ** ANNOUNCEMENT: The International Registry of FlexCoders **

2006-06-27 Thread Tariq Ahmed

In late 2005 Adobe announced
a goal at MAX 2005 of increasing the Flex development community
from roughly 5000 to over a Million by around the year 2010. The key
driver of this initiative is Flex 2 and it's tiered licensing model.
The bigger the community, the better is for you, therefore it's in your
interest to support this goal.
So, let's find out how many there are! Tell all your co-workers,
friends, pets, blogs, and various inner voices in your head to register.

Registering is quick and easy!

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex2 :: Seperate Mailing List :: Component developers - Framework Devlopment

2006-05-19 Thread Tariq Ahmed

I've actually quietly made some new Flex mailing lists; I've let it
simmer while waiting for Flex 2 to become final. I don't think too
granular of lists works well as there's too much overlap in a lot of
things. But I do see one problem arising with one super list like this
- not only are the spectrum of topics vast, now you got to content with
two major versions of the language in use (1.5 and 2), and so you'll
have to do a lot prefacing of context in every single message.

So... to alleviate that, I created the following:

Flex 2- General :: General discussion regarding anything Flex 2.
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-General

Flex 2- Coldfusion :: Topics regarding Flex to CF integration
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-CF

Flex Builder 2 :: Discussion regarding the IDE, debugging, design,
etc
http://groups.google.com/group/Flex2-Builder

Flex Jobs :: Recruiters welcome!
http://groups.google.com/group/FlexJobs

Tim Hoff wrote:

  I agree with you. It might be beneficial to
have a separate list for component/framework related threads. It's
probably cumbersome to weed through the development questions and
answers some times. I personally joined this list because I was led
here by a link at Adobe and the list description was applicable to my
Flex usage.

The flexcoders mailing list is for enterprise
software developers, developing Rich Internet Applications using
Macromedia Flex. The list will discuss methods and practices for Flex RIA development, including MXML and
ActionScript 2.0, as well as best-practices including testing, design
patterns, J2EE and .NET integration, etc.

  However, imho this is a two-way street.
Application developers learn and benefit from component/framework
threads. And conversely, some component/framework
developersappreciate the feedback from developers that are using Flex
to create real enterprise solutions. I am slowly but surely digging
deeper into the Flex framework and its advanced concepts. So for me,
it's good to have both sides in the same place.
  Just my thoughts,
Tim Hoff

[flexcoders] CFLEX.Net - Welcomes Posters....

2006-04-27 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Greetings All!

For years I've sought out ways to achieve RIAs combined with the
reality of rapid development and high pressure deadlines. This became a
reality for me when Flex was released, and I have been championing its
cause ever since.

Flex is near and dear to my heart, and more importantly so is the
community. In my own little way to support the community I put together
a sort of "Flex Cookbook" called CFLEX to aggregate all the little
tidbits of knowledge that were floating around there. My goals are to
increase the size of the community by lowering the barrier to entry; so
however or wherever that knowledge lay, I've been either hosting it or
just linking to it.

The ultimate goal of course is to make it completely community driven.
I've taken that one step further by putting in the extra time to make
that happen. You can now log into www.cflex.net, and shortly after
creating an account you'll have the ability to post content. So for
those of you who do not have Blogs, you are welcome to share your
knowledge at CFLEX. Those of you that do, and create a "here's how
to..." posting, feel free to add link from CFLEX to that particular
posting.

It goes beyond postings of course. As portal of sorts I'd like to list
your publicly available Flex Apps, Components, Job Postings, User
Groups, Consulting companies that specialize in Flex, Training
programs, other Flex knowledge sites like FlexCF.com, as well as the
leading experts and their blogs.

Suggestions are welcome!

Re: [flexcoders] Flex and Testing

2006-03-31 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Well you're talking about load testing. In terms of functionality and
regression testing I recently posted about this topic:

http://www.dopejam.com/shownewsitem.cfm?NewsID=215

We did some analysis. QuickTest Pro from Mercury is the only QA testing
tool that officially will support Flex 2. But in our testing of various
products, we found that Seapine's QA Wizard is vastly superior and
cheaper. Seapine is gathering requirements for their next major
version, so I encourage you all to send Seapine a note asking for Flex
2 support.

Re: [flexcoders] Developing Rich Clients book

2006-02-27 Thread Tariq Ahmed
It's an excellent book I have to say, but keep in mind that it was
written for Flex 1.0, so some of the examples break in 1.5, and a lot of
them need to be re-written for 2.0.

Besides the examples, it's the concepts that are very important, and
provide the reader of what features are available in Flex, and how they
work generally. Though at this point in time, I'd wait for a 2.0 book
since architecturally a lot of things have changed fundamentally since 1.0.

pixelgeek wrote:

 I ask primarily because I am not able to get the sample app from
 Chapter 2 to run (or compile) and if the rest of the book has similar
 issues due to the changes to Flex and MXML (note: I don't see this as
 an issue with the authors or the book just a fact of life) I am not
 sure the point behind continuing to work through it.

 So are the rest of the samples in the book salvagable or has the
 language changed that much that I will run into similar issues through
 the rest of the book?

that's the case check out:

Re: [flexcoders] Re: DG Display with data returned as a list.

2006-02-16 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Personally I do as much up front work in CF as I can, mostly because
I'm more familiar with CF than I am Flex, and manipulating data in CF
is just so damn easy... .:)

Making some assumptions here, but the basic idea something like:

cfset returnArray = arrayNew(1)
cfset completeList = ReturnAgents.fld_bagentId1  ","
ReturnAgents.fld_sagentId1

cfloop from="1" to="#ListLen(completeList)#" index="NDX"
 cfset returnArray[ndx] =
ListGetAt(ReturnAgents.fld_bagentId1,NDX)
/cfloop

cfreturn returnArray

Or if it's a pair of lists that go hand in hand.. maybe something like:

cfset returnArray = arrayNew(1)

cfloop from="1" to="#ListLen(ReturnAgents.fld_bagentId1)#"
index="NDX"
 cfset returnArray[ndx] = structNew()
 cfset returnArray[ndx].bagent =
ListGetAt(ReturnAgents.fld_bagentId1,NDX)
 cfset returnArray[ndx].sagent =
ListGetAt(ReturnAgents.fld_sagentId1,NDX)
/cfloop

cfreturn returnArray

 I think you misunderstand. There is no flash 9 announced or anywhere

 make much sense.

 Regarding 8.5 penetration, the point is that by the end of 2006,
 because of the way the updaters work you could very well have a
 majority of active users on 8.5 by the end of this year. That is of
 course speculation, but the purpose of the new updating technology is
 to achieve that kind of quick installed base updating. Whether it will
 work as advertised is of course a different question, but that is the

Re: [flexcoders] Double database Insertions with initialize

2006-01-03 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Well the first thing to determine is, is qiAdminListFileNumAdd() being
called twice. Eg open up your net connection debugger and see if a call
is being made twice, or on the result handler pop up an alert and see if
that alerts occurs twice, etc...

My guess is that is the case. And my super wild guess is that that
Canvas is being included in your app as a custom component twice.

Re: [flexcoders] How do I generate useful CFC Errors?

2005-12-29 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Ya I do something similar.

All my cfc's extend a basic root CFC that contains a function that
generates a common return structure which has the following elements:

- Msg, a message for the user
- isError, a flag indicating if an error occured or not.
- returnStatus, a return code (eg OK, BADQUERY, etc...)

So in your cfc you do something like:
cfset stResult = returnStruct()
cftry
  cfquery ... ... /cfquery
cfcatch type=any
cfset stResult.isError = true
cfset stResult.returnStatus = BADQUERY
cfset stResult.msg = CFCATCH.Detail
/cfcatch
/cftry

cfreturn stResult

Then in Flex on any WS or RO call if an error occured you can alert the
user and do whatever you need to do.

Mohanraj Jayaraman wrote:

Most of my functions in the CFC return's an object
(Struct) that has both the 'code' and 'message' apart
from the other details you need.

Here's an example

cfcomponent ..

  cffunction name=getQuery  hint=
returntype=struct access=remote

cfargument  type=struct name=stData
required=yes

   cfset var retStruct = StructNew()

   cfset retStruct['code']= 0
   cfset retStruct['message'] = Message from Function
getQuery:

   cftry
   cfquery name=qry_getqry datasource=#dsn#
   your query
   /cfquery

   cfset retStruct['dpCustomQuery']   =
queryToArray(qry_getqry)
   cfset retStruct['code']
 =  100
   cfset retStruct['messaage']
 = 'Custom query
data retrieved successfully'

   cfcatch type=any
   cfset retStruct['message'] = Error Details :
retStruct['message']  cfcatch.Message
cfcatch.Detail
   /cfcatch
   /cftry

   cfreturn retStruct

  /cffunction

/cfcomponent

In your Flex code , you will always get 'code' and
'message' in your 'result' object and you can process
your code based upon the 'code' you receive.

Hope this helps.

Re: [flexcoders] Error executing database querry

2005-12-26 Thread Tariq Ahmed
One of the practices I've been using in Flex development using CF is to
build a function test page that can be used to test functions in the
CFC's that your Flex app will be calling. This makes it easier when
debugging to verify if everything on the CF side is good and get the
detailed CF diagnostics when the function fails.

Though SQL wise there could be a lot of things that could cause the
stuff below to bomb. Eg if brand_id is an integer field the
'#arguments.brandToAdd.brand_id#' is trying to pass a string to that
field. Likewise with created_by, and modified_by.

Tracy Spratt wrote:

I don't do CF, but that error does not sound like it is related to flex.

Can you get your cfquery to display in a normal browser page? Or a cf

Re: [flexcoders] Pass array to CFC through Web Service

2005-12-22 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Well it looks like your function called remUpdateAssignments() has a
return type of boolean, and isn't returning one as such.

So I'm guessing your function signature looks something like:

cffunction name=remUpdateAssignments returnType=boolean ...
  cfargument name=aAssignments type=array required=yes

/cffunction

And you're not cfreturning a boolean value.

Has anyone got this to work?

I have been on this forever and cannto figure it out...

I am creating an array of objects like this. The target is a row from
a datagrid being dragged onto another grid.

for(var i = 0; i event.target.dataProvider.length; i++){
aAssignments.push(event.target.dataProvider[i])
 }

aAssignments looke like this in the network monitor:

Parameter 1:
name : aAssignments
type : anyType

value[array] :
length[Number] : 3

[0][object] :
NUMASSIGNMENTID[Number] : 2931
NUMLEVELOFEFFORT[Number] : 50
NUMPERSONNELID[Number] : 6
NUMPROJECTID[Number] : 1
TXTPROJECTNAME[String] : CPE
YNLEAD[Boolean] : true

[1][object] :
NUMASSIGNMENTID[Number] : 2933

[flexcoders] Adobe: impressing again

2005-12-20 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Nice!

The acquisition of Macromedia looks to have been a winner. In October,
Macromedia's last quarterly results announcement as an independent
company showed it was still growing strongly after the announcement of
its acquisition: sales came in at $127.9 million, up 18%, and net income
came to $20.3 million. It put that success down to demand for Flex and
Breeze.

I get are empty arrays.. no data whatsoever, even though when I use

Any ideas?  Suggestions?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: [flexcoders] Themes (was TemplateMonster.com)

2005-12-09 Thread Tariq Ahmed

On the topic of themes... I never really looked into themes since that
wasn't a priority. But was thinking it'd be great to start making an
open library of themes for Flex2.

Has anyone produced graphical skins or an entire theme that includes
skins for Flex2?

Has the process changed from 1.5 to 2? In 1.5 from my understanding you
basically modified HaloTheme.fla and exported it to a swc. I was
reading in 2.0 that you use compc to accomplish it, unfortunately page
567 of the app dev guide has been completed yet which covers 9 slicing.

Thx!

Title: TemplateMonster.com

I've bought templates from them before. It's essentially a zip file
with all the raw assets so that you can apply to your own situation
(sample HTML code that put all the graphics together, Photoshop files,
FLAs, etc...). As far as I know they don't have anything that would be
immediately plug and playable. But if you spend the time you can make
your own skins / styles / etc... based on the package.

But it'll be great in the future when people start publishing full
fledged Flex themes that can be easily applied.

Guys
Girls,
Seem to be
having an odd problem with getting and keeping a Jrun server stable.
The Jrun server is installed, flex installed on it and IIS is connected. Now this works fine (took a while to get it working, but its now working right). However when uploading changes to the app, sometimes the page will hang. Whats strange is we also get a _javascript_ error when this happens. The html source is published to the page but no swf is then viewable. The _javascript_ error says the following variable is underfined: lc_id .

Looking at the source code the following line is obviously pulling in some _javascript_:
script language='_javascript_' charset='utf-8' src='/Symph/flex-internal?action=history_js'/script

Now the _javascript_ error Im getting suggests this file is not loaded.

Has anyone come across the situation where jrun stops serving pages? Restarting it twice seems to wake it back up.

Ta

Steve

[flexcoders] persistant CFC connection in Flex?

2005-11-14 Thread Tariq Ahmed
In Coldfusion you can invoke a CFC, and it will live throughout the
execution of that page.

cfobject component=foo name=myComp

cfscript
myComp.init(x,y,z);
..
..
someInfo = myComp.getMe(something); //results of which are based on
the initialization of the above
someResult = myComp.do(somthing);
/cfscript

And so foo persists throughout the execute of that page. So far in Flex
I've only been doing static calls to CFC functions, but was wondering
with the Flex2 CFC Adapter if it's possible to automatically create
persistant connection to a RemoteObject as a CFC and just keep an active
connection to it?

Thx.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex prototype - production approach

2005-11-04 Thread Tariq Ahmed

I'll second the A approach. I'm a firm believer in the iterative
development approach (sometimes called the prototyping model,
lightweight methodology, etc...), as opposed to the waterfall approach
(define, analyze, scope, design, build, test, implement, support).

No matter how much planning and requirements gathering you do up front,
if you put massive up front effort into your planning it's going to
change once the end user gets their hand on something they can see.
It's way better to incrementally in a cylical manner build, user eval,
build, user eval, etc...So the final product will be exactly what the
user wants.

JesterXL wrote:

  I like to build stuff quickly,
ironing out the weird, diffucult things, and just continually kneed the
mofo like dough, improving, and releaseing working builds to prove
progress. Sometimes, you realize a re-write is best, and you can
re-use some functions and assets, but not much (which is why I call it
a re-write). Since Flash Flex make that sooo fast, you do that
about 3 times.

  I've done B, but that sucks. I hate
UML, as long as you have an awesome Information Architect, who cares;
take the wireframes, and go; then iterate when you can show a build,
and double-check your assumptions about both the wireframes the
implementation.

  To me, B works in better in a team,
and I've had success working with others, but the pressure at the
forefront to "plan it perfectly" seems like I'm being setup to fail,
and when the transition from prototype to production comes; it feels
cheap because the code itself wasn't really a prototype; it was a
planned production piece from the get go.

  Obviously, I'm leaving out all of
the important factors that affect the above such as investment, leeway,
deadlines, # team members, accountability, aptitude, experience, etc.
but bottom line, I dig A. The only really big thing about A is
deadline; you're emotional attachment to building re-usable code should
be inversely proportional to the amount of time you have left. So, if
you have a week, don't care about it. If you have a month,
definately. Obviously, I'm implying scope here, but you get the gist.

  Am evaluting a potential project that needs to be prototyped

  The two options I see, are :

  A. do a quick prototype in Flex or Flash for the purposes of

  B. Do a more planned out / better architected prototype in Flex

[flexcoders] Processor Speed vs Video Card Speed

2005-11-04 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Hey guys.

performance more: Processor Speed or Video Card speed?

I'm at a new job (left eBay 3 weeks ago), the goal at the new gig is to
re-engineer the application here (or at least make it way more usable).
The application is for a high volume call center, and the business is
completely dependent on this application. But because it's a call
center, the PC's that the user uses are pretty old (I'm working on
getting specs). So in terms of evaluation I'm scoping out what the
options are in terms of h/w upgrade is; and if just a video card upgrade
(vs replacing 400 PCs) could buy me some performance. Or, are Flash apps
pretty much 90% dependent on processor power?

Thx.

Well if your company wants to get serious about AJAX be prepared to
blow some serious dough. Because you'll of course want to boost the
productivity of your developers by using IDE's, tools, libaries, out of
the box components, etc...

E.g the TIBCO Ajax Accelerator/General Interface starts at $25K.

I certainly understand that, but it's kind of tough to do a price

using a product that has a price tag -- the true cost is in the
development/debugging hours. Sure, there are AJAX libraries that
certainly help out, but it's not really the same. Scott Barnes has
some excellent blog entries (www.mossyblog.com, specifically
http://www.mossyblog.com/archives/454.cfm) with some AJAX/DHTML vs.
Flex development anecdotes, which I personally feel are more
indicative of the true "cost" rather than looking at price tags.

Regards,
Dave.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Macromedia Labs site

2005-10-18 Thread Tariq Ahmed

I think there's a business opportunity to create a CF based Wiki; I've
had to integrate a PHP one because there aren't any good CF based ones
out there.

But I just want to comment that for MACR to make one; the decision
would be to divert resources. Frankly I'd rather see MACR focusing on
their core products, as opposed to pulling CF guys off of CF8 to make a
CF based wiki which would be totally sunk cost unless they plan to sell
it as a product. Financially it wouldn't make sense.

charlespaz1 wrote:

How would you feel if Microsoft hosted their web pages on Linux/Apache
instead of Windows/IIS? Or developed Office in Delphi? It just
wouldn't give a great impression of their confidence in their own product.

Who, if not Macromedia, has the most knowledgable people of
ColdFusion? Who, if not Macromedia, should be running a ColdFusion
based Wiki, to not only showcase their product, but to show their
confidence in its use in an enterprise environment.

With a simple Google search today I found a ColdFusion wiki, and I've
downloaded a few others previously. http://www.cdsi-solutions.com/cfwiki/

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex DataGrid with large recordset

2005-10-02 Thread Tariq Ahmed

I have always had list performance issues. Flash 8 helped a bit. But to
reproduce just change your datagrid tag to this:

 mx:DataGrid creationComplete="event.target.dataProvider =
largeArray" height="100%"

The scroll will act chunky. Turn on variable height and column
wrapping, a few more columns, some that are cellrenderer based, and you
can easily get to a point where more than 200 records is unusable.

faster with 200 rows?

I don't know why you're facing problems with scrolling. The number of
records does not affect the scrolling performance for the list
controls (List, DataGrid, Tree, ...).

See this example:

?xml version="1.0"?
mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml" xmlns="*"
  initialize="populate()"

  mx:Script
![CDATA[
public var largeArray = new Array(1);

public function populate():Void
{
  for (var i:Number = 0; i  largeArray.length; i++)
largeArray[i] = {foo: i, bar: 'a' + i};
}
]]
  /mx:Script

  mx:DataGrid creationComplete="event.target.dataProvider = largeArray" /
/mx:Application

It scrolls without any issues on my machine. I increased the array
size from 10,000 to 1,000,000 (million), and, while the application
took a while to start up, once it did it worked like a charm.

Are you using custom cell renderers (not that it matters again)?

Here is one of many chances that you'll have to submit your feature

if you include a use case for your feature request - ie, how would you
use the feature, what would be the impact to your business, etc. These
are all criteria that we examine when we decide whether to build a

Yo. Well as mentioned there was HUGE sticker shock when MM doubled the

prices of their cars... but if you wanna role with the high end you

There is a slew of alternatives out there too (Droplets,

Re: [flexcoders] Flex Server Alternatives

2005-09-28 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Well I don't know if I would venture to "dirt cheap". What other
systems are you referring to?

If you're enterprise, and building mission critical apps, and
especially if it affects financial performance and need to be SOX
compliant you're basic setup is:
- 1 Development WS
- 1 QA Server
- High Availability Setup (at least 2 load balanced machines).
- Disaster Recovery Site (min 1 web server).

If you're using decent hardware with 4CPU Xeons, you've got 5 machines
* 4 cpus/ea = 20 CPUs * $15K/cpu = $300 000.

You would have to REALLY boost automation, workflow efficiency, etc...
to recuperate the cost of Flex licensing and Flex application
development (not everyone is Scott Barnes level super coder) vs a
CF/Whatever based solution. Not to say that it can't be done, and I'm
sure it can (reminder: I am a huge Flex proponent); but looking at
things from a business sense it has to be measureable and provable. Eg
I made one Flex app that compared to what was there before saves about
$200K/yr, but how much more it would save over a CF based solution is
hard to measure.

So when trying to sell to management the sexy $300K Flex solution vs
the not as sexy $15K CF solution which gets the job done - you have to
account for at least a
$285Kdifference. Because the opportunity cost is that $285K could have
bought you 3 or 4 more developers for that year and double your
development capacity which could have resulted in a bunch more apps
that save or make money that aren't addressed for that year.

Bla bla Bla... $300K is a TOUGH sell even for Enterprises with the
deepest of pockets, and it can be done obviously, but 'dirt cheap' in
my humble opinion is understanding it a we bit. :)

Scott Barnes wrote:
I've been absolutely [EMAIL PROTECTED] off with the price when it
first hit us,
that being said i've now truly seen what FLEX does in terms of cost
savings in much larger "Enterprise Service" orientated systems, and i'm
now retracting my position, simply put, FLEX is dirt cheap compared to
some other systems being sold on the market today that have less
capabilities.

  My point is, I didn't see this group talk about alternatives. One way to put
 pressure on MM is
to support an open source/3rd party version that is equivalent in
functionality. I am not
necessarily looking for a branded product, I just want to get the job done.

Which is good, the first example works great (crashes my IE using Flash

a button that takes a snapshot of the current image from the webcam? The
Camera class didn't seem to have a function that can do that...?

[flexcoders] Custom Component Instantiation Sequencing?

2005-09-12 Thread Tariq Ahmed

 Hey all.

I'm not really sure what to accurately name the topic of this
relatively simple question - but I'll roll with Custom Component
Instantiation Sequencing.

- Got a Tab Navigator.
- I have a generic component I made which I use in various locations.
It generates a summary of some information depending on information
passed to it. On Initialize it takes a username and calls a remote
object to get back the appropriate data. This works fine when the main
mxml file calls it, but when a custom component calls it the Initialize
seems to occur before the databinding occurs.

The problem I'm having is related to the timing of how this component
is initialized.

This works fine:

mx:Canvas label="Canv1"/
 comp:Summary id="s1" myUserName=""/
/mx:Canvas

mx:Canvas label="Canv2"/
 comp:MyComp/
 comp:Summary id="s2" myUserName="{someVar}"/
/mx:Canvas

S2 calls the remote object with the appropriate username, and gets back
the data...

This doesn't work fine:

mx:Canvas label="Canv1"/
 comp:Summary id="s1" myUserName=""/
/mx:Canvas

mx:Canvas label="Canv2"/
 comp:MyComp/ --- This component has comp:Summary
id="s2" myUserName="{someVar}"/ inside it
/mx:Canvas

What happens is that the remote object is called before myUserName is
set. myUserName in the S2 does get set appropriately, but not before
the RO is called - hence returning back the wrong data.

I tried playing around with creation policy settings, but no luck. Any
thoughts? thanks!

Man... everytime I post to the list, I figure it out a few minutes
later.

Using creationComplete instead of initialize did the trick. What threw
me off is it working fine being called from the main app, and the
behavior changing when called from another component.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Easiest way to connect to mysql?

2005-08-25 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Well from a Coldfusion perspective... it's extremely easy.

In the Coldfusion administrator you set up a Datasource to your mySQL
Database. CF comes with a mySQL driver out of the box, all you do is
give it a name (eg mySQLDS), server, port, username, pw, etc...

then in CF you make a file called a CFC (Coldfusion Component), which is
just a text file and looks something like this in a very basic sense:

mycomponent.cfc
cfcomponent
  cffunction name=getData returnType=query access=remote
 cfquery name=myQuery datasource=mySQLDS
SELECT * from whatever
  /cfquery
  cfreturn myQuery
   /cffunction
/cfcomponent

Then in Flex...
mx:RemoteObject ... source=mycomponent
  mx:Method name=getData . /
/mx:RemoteObject

And that cfc can also be a webservice as the same time just by basically
switching mx:RemoteObject to mx:WebService.

 From a PHP perspective, this article may help
http://webservices.xml.com/pub/a/ws/2004/03/24/phpws.html

pioplacz wrote:

That I know cause at the moment I use PHP to output all the data
from mysql and show it in XML. But thinking of using some other
technology like webservices. But don't really know how to create
them? Can you maybe explain a little how is all works and what would
be the easiest way to use.

Since no one replied yet, I'll take a stab (consequently, Fridays are the
slowest days of the week; I guess some geeks actually have lives...weird!).

- Flash 8 has some great image editing capabilities, but Flex currently does
not have the built-in API to support that unless you do pure ActionScript.
Hopefully boldFlex 2.0/bold will, but for now, you're going to have to compile for 8,
or purchase Flash 8 to get the most out of it.

[flexcoders] Solid Analysis of RIA Offerings...

2005-08-16 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Hey all, I'm receiving some upper management friction in terms of
continuing to push Flex deeper into the Enterprise.

I'm basically looking for a document anyone has written that makes a
quantitative analysis of the various RIA offerings (most importantly
Flex, Laszlo, and Ajax) and makes the business case (not the technical
case) for Flex to give me a head start. Between my own knowledge, and
links to various postings on the matter I could whip something out - but
figured I can save a ton of time if someone has already had to do this.

Thanks.

sectionModel.region[0].revenue = 13;

sectionModel.region[1].revenue = 14;

sectionModel.region[2].revenue =

  And then these two components displaying

  Now the list should show 13,14,15,16

  called as a result from a remoteObject

mouse over
each individual item.
  Though why it works fine if the same
code is
executed as a result of an
  initialize call is beyond me.

  In the actual problem that I have -
instead of a
list I have a PieChart,
  and its display does not update even
though the
model is updated (though
  to complicate things the exact same code
works on
another machine).

  Any ideas? Some caching thing?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Install on IIS

2005-08-04 Thread Tariq Ahmed

To follow that up, same here. I've done the CF6.1 and CF7 on numerous
occasions and haven't had a problem (Win XP and Win2K Server, IIS5) . I
followed the MM instructions exactly:

http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flex/1_5/flexforcf.html

And works like a charm. As Rob notes, I am doing this under the non
integrated CF (in CF7 the wizard calls this the Multiserver option I
think).

Is there anything special about your machine? Multiple network cards,
multiple instances of IIS running, etc...? Are there any special
filters or plug-ins running on your IIS? If it's possible to remote
desktop into it I'd be willing to take a look.

  If you just
want to be able to have flex
apps and ColdFusion apps on the same IIS server, you would install
ColdFusion
as J2EE option. This will create a JRun installation with a cfusion
server. Run
the WSConfig to set CF to a site on IIS. Then install Flex and deploy
it as a
separate app on the JRun server installed with CF. Again run the
WSConfig, but
this time set the Flex app to a different site on IIS. They have to be
for
different sites in IIS (unless you do the flex embedded in CF, I think).

  I just
tested this on my server, so I
pretty sure it works.

Hmmm.. well I would say try Ben and Peter's web.xml file:
http://www.cflex.net/showfiledetails.cfm?ObjectID=177

If that doesn't work... If it's not too painful, I probably would
uninstall everything and re-install from fresh and meticulously go
through the steps. Otherwise you can spend forever trying to
troubleshoot this.

Re: [flexcoders] calendar/schedule tool one day view

2005-07-29 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Hi Doug! We've spent done some thinking about this as well. If you ever
get it done, I'll buy it off you. :)

A datagrid is the closest out of the box component I think. But if you
look at what Outlook can do it's beyond grid in that you can have
multiple adjacent items in a cell, and items can span multiple rows and
columns (multiday events). So a DG + CellRenderers can get you basic
version, but to go all out I think you'll need to create from scratch
your own control/component.

Douglas Knudsen wrote:

ability to drag items to be scheduled onto it. I'm looking for
suggestions on what component to build this off of as a base.
Datagrid seems to be the path to take using custom cell renderors.
Any suggestions?  list, grid??

Hi Jeremy, I didn't see a CFC attached. But in general you define an
mx:RemoteObject, and in a really basic sense:

##jeremy.mxml
mx:Application init=myRO.getSomething().send()
mx:RemoteObject id=myRO
endpoint=@ContextRoot()/flashservices/gateway source=jeremy
 mx:method name=getSomething result=newAdds.text=event.result/
/mx:RemoteObject

  mx:FormItem label=New Additions
mx:TextInput id=newAdds /
/mx:FormItem
  /mx:Form

/mx:Application

### jeremy.cfc
cfcomponent
  cffunction name=getSomething returnType=string access=remote
 cfreturn yo!

eBay has a developer program which is for the most part free unless you
start doing some high vol stuff.

http://developer.ebay.com/index_html

The API is XML/WebServices. They have a sandbox where you can test
building tools for listing items, retrieving status, etc... And then to
actually do stuff for real there are various membership levels. Eg at
the invidiual level allows 10K API calls per month for free.

Re: [flexcoders] Flex and CFCs -- problems displaying recordsets in datagrids

2005-07-24 Thread Tariq Ahmed
The book in general has some best practices to pretty much everything.
But your CF approach sounds good; we're in a similar situation in that
we have a large knowledge management system built in CF - there will
never be a plan to redo that in another language, and the flex stuff we
build just adds onto the existing 'product'.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Thanks for the advice, Tariq. I ordered the book last week and am looking
forward to giving it a read. Does the book give examples on how to create a
result handler? In terms of CFCs, I'm converting a MVC Fusebox 4 coldfusion
app to a Flex interface. Since the application is allready very large and
there are already thousands of programming hours put into the controller and
model sections, I wanted to re-use as much of my CF code as possible. My idea
is to call CFCs that will have a number of cfincludes, mimicking a fuseaction
as close as possible. I realize this will lead to very tight dependency on
CF, but I'm committed at this point. Do you see any other drawbacks to this
approach?

Re: [flexcoders] Using Value Objects CFC's

2005-07-23 Thread Tariq Ahmed
Hey Malcolm. Well CFC's generally only accept datatypes they understand:
boolean, string, numeric, array, struct, etc...

This article may give you a head start:

Malcolm wrote:

Hi yo'll

I am using Remote Objects (definitely the way to go) with ColdFusion 7

Or put another way can a CFC argument be of the type Object? Using example
code from the Cairngorm login sample, this is the object I am passing to the
CFC.

 LoginVO.as

import org.nevis.cairngorm.vo.ValueObject;
class com.company.product.vo.LoginVO implements ValueObject
{
   public function toString() : String
   {
   var s : String = LoginVO[username=;

   s += , password=;
   s += password;
   s += , loginDate=;
   s += loginDate;
   s +=  ];
   return s;

   public static var registered:Boolean = Object.registerClass(
com.company.product.vo.LoginVO, LoginVO );

   public var username : String;
   public var password : String;
   public var loginDate : Date;
}

- CFC

cfcomponent displayname=LoginService

   cffunction name=login output=false access=remote

   cfargument name=loginVO required=yes default=

   !--- THIS DOESN'T WORK ---
   cfset username = loginVO.username

   /cffunction

/cfcomponent

 Generates the following CF Error

Error Type: Expression
Message: You have attempted to dereference a scalar variable of type class
java.lang.String as a structure with members.

-

Something wrong with the way I am accessing the loginVO.username value? Do I
need to perform a deep copy of the object or something like that?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Malcolm

Re: [flexcoders] Flex and CFCs -- problems displaying recordsets in datagrids

2005-07-23 Thread Tariq Ahmed

Good stuff!

- Well I don't know if there's really a standard with respect to CF to
Flex communications. Certainly there are naming convention standards
that I see being adopted from the Flash/Java development side of
things, and having things returned in a non-predictable manner can cost
you over time. So the question is whether to put the time up front, or
later (eg hiring new guys w/o CF background that were expecting a field
to be called firstName and it turns out to be FIRSTNAME). In general I
would say stick to and enforce a convention that your team is
comfortable with, and minimize dependency on assumptions of any
particular platform (eg if you decide to switch from CF to Java
sometime in the future). On the flipside we also create our external
facing CFCs with no assumption that it's Flex communicating with it.

- I would highly recommend the iteration::two book on rich internet
applications which talks about patterns. As for invoking a result
handler function vs direct assignment. I guess it depends. But in
general as your apps get more complex you'll probably end up needing a
result handler to do more than just assigning the results.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  Hi Tarik,

  Please ignore my previous messages. I was
able to get it working. I misunderstood the capitalization advice. I
had capitalized the entire field, when only the first letter needed to
be.

  A couple of follow-up questions, if you
don't mind:

I see contrary advice on how to return data
from CF. Some say through an array and others just take the recordset
directly. Which would you consider best practice? I want to settle on
a standard as I build out my first Flex app.
In the RemoteObject tag, is it better to
just pass the event to a function (i.e., fault="doFault(event)"
result="doResult(event)") or through more implicit calls (i.e.,
fault="mx.controls.Alert.show(event.fault.faultstring) mx:method
name="doResult" result="handleResult(event)"). Again, I'm just looking
for a best practice I can standardize on.

  Thank you,
  Darius

Cool, thanks Clint!

ran into this a few months ago...

I solved it by putting the deletePopUp call in a doLater()

the function i have inside the popup looks like this

public function closePopUp()
 {
  //careful this is a bug fix
  //it only happens in some instances not all
  //without this the drop shadow stays... annoying to find the
answer to this one
  doLater(this, "deletePopUp");
 }

then i call it like... popup.closePopUp()

  Hey
all.

I've got a popup TitleWindow that automatically deletes itself:

mx:TitleWindow xmlns:mx="http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml"
title="xyz" initialize="setInterval(this,'
this.deletePopUp',5000);"

And it works. But it leaves the dropshadow behind. Doing some searching
I found this same problem which seems to indicate it is a Flex 1.0
problem, but I'm definitely running 1.5.

Any other ideas?

Re: [flexcoders] dynamically creating children suggestions?

2005-07-21 Thread Tariq Ahmed

How about expanding on your XML to group filter items so that you only
have to display a subset at a time... eg using a tab navigator and/or a
deferred instantiation strategy?

  Im
getting XML back from the
database. The XML contains a bunch of elements, all containing
children
elements that tell me what type of component to display, i.e.:

  At any
rateone of the reports the
user can select returns XML that contains 104 elements, i.e.: 104
various
filters they can set for this report. Wellneedless to say my form
takes a long time to generate and the browser hangs while its being
created. I should mention that when I get the XML from the database
and
its sent to my ViewHelper class, I use the XMLObjectOutput utility
class
to convert the XML to an object. That part, even for the 104 element
XML
is SO quick. Its when the form elements begin to get generated on
the fly is where the browser hangs. (Ive tried removing the creation
of the elements that require my custom Range form field component and
that
holds very little bearing on the length of time it takes to dynamically
generate my form, as an aside).

  Is there a
more elegant way to
dynamically generate children so its not so memory-taxing? Is
there a better approach altogether for this dynamic generation of
children for
my Form component?

  Any help
is greatly appreciated.

  Thanks,
