Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'd like my template header to be formatted this way: ChapterTitle - Heading1.

Imagine I have a Heading1 on page 2 (let's say Introducing the product) of my
Chapter 1, then a second Heading1 on page 8 (Identifying the components).

How do I get a header displaying Chapter 1 - Introducing the product from
page 2 to 7, then Chapter 1 - Identifying the components for the following
pages.

So far I have Chapter 1 - Introducing the product on page 2, Chapter 1 -
on pages 3 to 7, then Chapter 1 - Identifying the components on page 8, and
again Chapter 1 - on page 9 to ..

I'm using FM 7.2 on PC.

Thank you for your help !

Mathieu.

On the master page, insert a Running H/F variable. Define it as
$paratext[heading1] (or whatever your paragraph tag is).

Re: Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Rene Stephenson
Hi Mathieu:

You could define the Heading1 autonumber as:
$chapnum\t—\t
(using ALT+0151 for the —)

This would read the chapter number setting from the file, so it wouldn't
increment when you use it multiple times in the same file. You could also do
some series numbering settings, but I find this to be the simplest approach.

However, from a readability perspective, it might confuse the reader, because
conventionally the chapter number is presented with the chapter title, and this
format would look like several different chapter titles assigned to the same
chapter number. Collapsed heading levels go against certain well-established
conventions (and with good reason). One way around this is the technical-style
numbered headings (1.1, 1.2, etc.) that provide at-a-glance chapter reference
within the various heading levels. Another way to handle it is to display
chapter info in the master page header as a point of reference. There are a lot
of ways to address the same concern, really...as is usually the case in life!

So, when you implement the layout the way you want it, regardless of your final
solution, I would encourage you to present a sample document to a wide sampling
of representatives of your target audience and ask some well-formed and
open-ended questions about how they interpret/understand the headings and
information hierarchy in the document. Regardless of the tack you take,
usability feedback on templates is always helpful. :-)

Cheers!

RE: Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Lester C. Smalley
To extract information from the body into the page headers, FrameMaker
uses the Running H/F variables in the page headers on the master pages.
For example, the 'default' definition of the Running H/F 1 variable is
$paratext[Title] which pulls the text of any paragraph tagged Title
into the header. There are other building blocks for these variables,
such as $paranum[Tag_name] to extract the autonumber string of the
specified paragraph tag.

Most importantly, remember that tag names in FrameMaker are case and
space sensitive: Heading1 is a different tag than heading1 or Heading 1.

You can even use a list of paragraphs between the square brackets, such
as $paratext[Header1, Header2] and FM will look for either of those
tags to get information into the header. If a tag occurs on the
specific page, Frame uses the first instance if more than one appears;
if not, FM looks back to previous pages to find the most recent instance
of a tag to grab its information. But it will not jump across file
breaks, it will only use information in the current document. You can
even get the LAST instance of a tag on a page by using the construct
$paratext[-Heaidng1], that is, add a hyphen before the tag name inside
the variable definition.

So, to get your chapter number and Heading 1 text, you might need a
Running H/F variable defined as:
 Chapter $paranum[Chapter] - $paratext[Heading 1]

(without the quotes) where the initial word is literal text, as are the
spaces and hyphen.

It seems that you have some master pages with the correct header
definitions for your purpose, but that not all the body pages are using
those. Pages 3-7 and 9 apparently use different master pages that
do not get the Heading 1 text, based on your message.

So you either have to add the desired H/F variables to the other master
pages now in use, or re-assign the desired master page layout (via
Format Page Layout Master Page Usage) to the body pages.

Re: Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Art Campbell
Probably the easiest way is to create a new file using the default
BookChapter template. Go to the master pages, look at the header
structure, which contains the variables for Chapter and Heading1. Then
copy and paste them into your working file's master pages. Adjust the
name of the paragraphs, if yours differ from the default.

Open PDF at specified named destination

2008-06-18 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear all,

I want to open a PDF at a specified named destination (because the location is
not on
a fixed page). However the PDF does not open where expected, but on page 1.

Acrobat is 7.0.9
FrameMaker 8.0.2

In FrameMaker at the desired location I enter a Hypertext command
newlink editpad

The Windows command to open the file is
Acrobat.exe /a nameddest=editpad D:\_INFOBASE\infobase.pdf
(I got this information from
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/PDFOpenParameters.pdf)

The reason, why the file is not opened at the desired location is this:
The named destination in the PDF is not
editpad
but
M8.8.newlink.editpad

Hence the file opens correctly with this command:
Acrobat.exe /a nameddest=M8.8.newlink.editpad D:\_INFOBASE\infobase.pdf

IMHO the M8.8. may be different at the next PDF generation, hence I can not
just adapt
the comand to open the file.

What must i do that FrameMaker creates a named destination without that
automatic
prefix?

Hi all,

(Win XP, FM7.2)

In the Introduction section of each FM guide I
list related documentation - each description in
bullet form is a text inset. There may be from 1
to 5 related docs. Then there follows a line of
text in Body para format. When I update the text
insets my double-clicking and pressing Update,
that line of text is formatted as bullet...NOT what I want..

This is one of several similar examples.

The only soln I have found is to import the last
line as a text inset too and not setting Reformat using the current...

But this import method causes a script I have
that converts TIs to text to fail when coming
upon the text inset that does not use the Reformat using the current..

So the original problem remains.

Do any other of you have the problem? Any
soultions...this is a real pain and diminishes
the practicality of using text insets IMHO.

Thanks for any comments you may have.

Well, I had your problem all figured out and a reply composed when I
realized that it didn't quite fit. I hope your description isn't quite
accurate, because if it is, a bug I've seen in previous versions of FM
is even worse in 7.2 (which I recently moved to).

A text inset is an object, like a variable or xref, that sits in a
specific location in the text flow. What people usually refer to as the
pgf that follows the text inset is actually the container pgf in
which it sits. If you have View Text Symbols on and you click the text
inset to select it, you'll see that the selection extends past the end
of the last pgf in the text inset and down into the following pgf.

Now, the bug that I'm familiar with works like this: If a text inset
sits at the end of its container pgf (immediately adjacent to the
pilcrow), that pgf takes on the format of the first pgf in the text
inset. (It's similar to the bug that causes a pgf format override when a
char tag runs right up to the pilcrow.)

The solution is simple: Separate the text inset and pilcrow. A space
will do. I use a non-breaking space so that there's a text symbol to see
on the screen. And that solution has always worked for me.

But according to your description, there's already text between the end
of the text inset and the end of its container pgf, and that container
pgf is _still_ taking on the format of the first pgf in the text inset.
Are you sure? That would be an annoying escalation of the bad
behavior. When I get the chance, I'll see if I can duplicate that
problem.

If that's what's happening, I can think of only one easy answer: Always
use a special pgf format as the text inset container (the following
pgf) -- something small to minimize the extra vertical space -- and
start every text inset with that same pgf format.

HTH!

Re: Text insets

2008-06-18 Thread Jona Steenbrink
Hi,

I've had problems with text insets before, and have used the non-
breaking space before pilcrow method with a small (4pt) container
paragraph to resolve it.

Looking at it again (and apologies if this is not relevant or
practical) I notice that if you are importing a text inset, if you
*select* the pilcrow (thereby selecting the entire container
paragraph, rather than just placing the cursor in front of the
pilcrow) and import the text inset, any text that follows after the
text inset will retain its formatting, even when the text inset is
updated. An additional benefit to this is that there is no 'extra'
line under the text inset.

Does this make sense, or am I simply confusing the matter further?

which it sits. If you have View Text Symbols on and you click the
 text
inset to select it, you'll see that the selection extends past the end
of the last pgf in the text inset and down into the following pgf.

Now, the bug that I'm familiar with works like this: If a text inset
sits at the end of its container pgf (immediately adjacent to the
pilcrow), that pgf takes on the format of the first pgf in the text
inset. (It's similar to the bug that causes a pgf format override
 when a
char tag runs right up to the pilcrow.)

The solution is simple: Separate the text inset and pilcrow. A space
will do. I use a non-breaking space so that there's a text symbol to
 see
on the screen. And that solution has always worked for me.

But according to your description, there's already text between the
 end
of the text inset and the end of its container pgf, and that container
pgf is _still_ taking on the format of the first pgf in the text
 inset.
Are you sure? That would be an annoying escalation of the bad
behavior. When I get the chance, I'll see if I can duplicate that
 problem.

If that's what's happening, I can think of only one easy answer:
 Always
use a special pgf format as the text inset container (the following
pgf) -- something small to minimize the extra vertical space -- and
start every text inset with that same pgf format.

 HTH!

Arial being changed to ArialMT in PDF

2008-06-18 Thread Lane, Laura K
I'm using FrameMaker 7.2, Acrobat Pro 7.0.9, and XP. I've been printing
PDF books and individual files from FrameMaker using the Arial font but
when I check the font in the PDF it has been changed to ArialMT. I have
the font locations in the settings for the Distiller program as the
following:

C:\Program File\adobe\distillr\Data\fonts\
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\fminit\fonts\
C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.2\fminit\
C:\Windows\fonts\

Arial is in all of these locations but distiller doesn't seem to
recognize Arial as the font to be used. When I go into the settings for
Distiller it doesn't list Arial as a one of the fonts to select. I've
uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat and it still won't recognize Arial.

In my FrameMaker .ini file I have the default as Arial and it doesn't
mention ArialMT anywhere in the file. My EDD for this book tells FM to
use Arial and there's only Arial in the FM files without any user
overrides. Again no mention of ArialMT.

Any suggestions on how I can get Distiller to use Arial and not ArialMT?
I'm completely stumped here.

Thanks in advance,
Laura

I'm trying to fix a document created by another user that has a problem
that's making me crazy.

On screen: figures show in full color, cross references show as blue,

Converted to PDF, displayed on screen: ditto.

Printed: figures print in full color, cross references print to black

Printed another document: cross references print in color.

Printed on another color printer: cross references still only print in BW.

I tried researching the answer but I must not be using the right terms.

Can anyone seen this problem before? We are using Version 7.1p114

Framemaker platform support

2008-06-18 Thread Leo Paoletti

Hello,
We're considering upgrading Framemaker and our computers. I have a couple of
questions that I hope someone can help me out with.

Is Framemaker 8 supported on Windows Vista 64-bit computers? If not, does it
run on Vista 64-bit computers? Based on what I'm seeing in the Adobe KB, I
think not.
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb403291sliceId=1

I understand that Framemaker 7.2 is not supported on Vista. However, is anyone
successfully running it? If so, are you running it on a 32-bit Vista or a
64-bit Vista?

Thanks,
Leo Paoletti

Ps: Is the http://www.frameusers.com/ website still in operation. I received an
error when I went there today.

I'm new. This is my first post. I've cross posted. Please excuse my
directness, I'm under the gun...

FrameMaker 8.0 and RoboHelp 7 HTML as part of the Technical
Communication Suite.

I have a FrameMaker book that uses a template designed for publishing
to PDF. I am trying to create a new template to reformat the content
for importing the entire book (.book file) into a RoboHelp HTML
WebHelp project.

My only problem is with anchored frames and the graphics.

In the template designed for Publish as PDF, all of the anchored
frames are aligned as Center and extend to both margins. The Inside
and Outside margins are set to 48. Some of the graphics are Offset
From Left = 114.0 pt (This makes them flush with the Body paragraph
tag). Others are Offset From Left = 130.0 pt (this makes them flush
with the indented body paragraph tag).

I've created a new template where the Body paragraph tag is set to 0.0
pt. And the indented body paragraph tag is set to 16.0 pt.

When I import the FrameMaker book into RoboHelp (after applying the
new template), everything else looks fine, but all graphics are hard
set (Offset From Left) to 114pt and 130pt. (And this looks bad.)

I want to format the anchored frames and graphics in each template so
that when the Publish to PDF template is applied, the graphics are
flush with the 114pt Body paragraphAnd when the Import to
RoboHelp WebHelp template is applied, the graphics are flush with the
0.0 pt Body paragraph.

Paragraphs are easy to manipulate in a template. But I can find no
way to manipulate anchored frames or graphics. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Adobe PDF failures ... backwards from what I had recently.

2008-06-18 Thread Syed.Hosain
Hi, all.

Please pardon the long e-mail here!

In the past, with FrameMaker 7.2 and Acrobat Pro 7, on the TAGS menu, I
had to *uncheck* the Generate Tagged PDF to make it work without
crashing.

Then, with FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat Pro 8, on the TAGS menu, I had to
*check* the Generate Tagged PDF to make it work without crashing. This
last has been working fine since I upgraded months back.

Today, for some strange reason, I would get a FM crash, with both Save
as PDF and with printing to the Adobe PDF printer. With the same book
that has been working perfectly for quite a while now the past few
weeks. An *incomplete* TPS file gets left in the directory - I know it
is incomplete since the file clearly has missing text at the end.

(The first time, though, I got a very strange PDF file ... in the TOC,
the numbering was missing in some areas, some TOC lines were truncated,
etc. It started crashing completely from the second run on!)

So, I tried:

1. Saving each document in the book as MIF and rebuilding each
.FM file.
2. Deleting FNTCACHE.DAT and rebooting.
3. Copying the old backup .FM files from a few days ago!

No luck whatsoever! The .TPS files left behind looked incomplete, by the
way, like they had not finished being written.

So, I tried to PDF individual documents (there were three in the book -
one long one and two much shorter ones):

1. Two of the documents (the short ones) would generate PDF
files correctly.
2. With the third one, FrameMaker would simply crash and go
away - without even the usual menu box telling me that it had saved a
file for the Adobe folks to look at!

So, I tried the above *uncheck*'ed TAGS menu setting (i.e., went back to
what I used to use with FrameMaker 7.2 for the heck of it). And, sure
enough, now everything is working fine again! With no change to the .FM
documents in the book whatsoever. The crash and failure to generate the
PDF went away - both with Save as PDF and with printing to the Adobe
PDF printer!

So ... what on earth is this problem? What is Tagged PDF and why is it
so problematic for FrameMaker?

Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'd like my template header to be formatted this way: "ChapterTitle - Heading1".

Imagine I have a Heading1 on page 2 (let's say "Introducing the product") of my

How do I get a header displaying "Chapter 1 - Introducing the product" from

pages.

So far I have "Chapter 1 - Introducing the product" on page 2, "Chapter 1 - "

again "Chapter 1 - " on page 9 to ..

I'm using FM 7.2 on PC.

Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Rene Stephenson
Hi Mathieu:

You could define the Heading1 autonumber as:
<$chapnum>\t?\t
(using ALT+0151 for the ?)

Cheers!

Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Lester C. Smalley
To extract information from the body into the page headers, FrameMaker
uses the Running H/F variables in the page headers on the master pages.
For example, the 'default' definition of the Running H/F 1 variable is
<$paratext[Title]> which pulls the text of any paragraph tagged Title
into the header. There are other building blocks for these variables,
such as <$paranum[Tag_name]> to extract the autonumber string of the
specified paragraph tag.

Most importantly, remember that tag names in FrameMaker are case and
space sensitive: Heading1 is a different tag than heading1 or Heading 1.

You can even use a list of paragraphs between the square brackets, such
as <$paratext[Header1, Header2]> and FM will look for either of those
tags to get information into the header. If a tag occurs on the
specific page, Frame uses the first instance if more than one appears;
if not, FM looks back to previous pages to find the most recent instance
of a tag to grab its information. But it will not jump across file
breaks, it will only use information in the current document. You can
even get the LAST instance of a tag on a page by using the construct
<$paratext[-Heaidng1]>, that is, add a hyphen before the tag name inside
the variable definition.

So, to get your chapter number and Heading 1 text, you might need a
Running H/F variable defined as:
 "Chapter <$paranum[Chapter]> - <$paratext[Heading 1]>"

(without the quotes) where the initial word is literal text, as are the
spaces and hyphen.

It seems that you have some master pages with the correct header
definitions for your purpose, but that not all the body pages are using
those. Pages 3-7 and 9 apparently use different master pages that
do not get the Heading 1 text, based on your message.

So you either have to add the desired H/F variables to the other master
pages now in use, or re-assign the desired master page layout (via
Format > Page Layout > Master Page Usage) to the body pages.

Paragraph Style in Header

2008-06-18 Thread Art Campbell
Probably the easiest way is to create a new file using the default
Book>Chapter template. Go to the master pages, look at the header
structure, which contains the variables for Chapter and Heading1. Then
copy and paste them into your working file's master pages. Adjust the
name of the paragraphs, if yours differ from the default.

Open PDF at specified named destination

2008-06-18 Thread Klaus Daube
Dear all,

I want to open a PDF at a specified named destination (because the location is
not on
a fixed page). However the PDF does not open where expected, but on page 1.

Acrobat is 7.0.9
FrameMaker 8.0.2

In FrameMaker at the desired location I enter a Hypertext command
newlink editpad

The Windows command to open the file is
Acrobat.exe /a nameddest=editpad D:\_INFOBASE\infobase.pdf
(I got this information from
http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/acrobat/PDFOpenParameters.pdf)

The reason, why the file is not opened at the desired location is this:
The named destination in the PDF is not
editpad
but
M8.8.newlink.editpad

Hence the file opens correctly with this command:
Acrobat.exe /a nameddest=M8.8.newlink.editpad D:\_INFOBASE\infobase.pdf

IMHO the M8.8. may be different at the next PDF generation, hence I can not
just adapt
the comand to open the file.

What must i do that FrameMaker creates a named destination without that
automatic
prefix?

Thank You for any ideas.http://mymemo.ch und nie mehr einen Gedanken oder

Text insets

2008-06-18 Thread Stephen O'Brien

With View > Text Symbols turned on, put your cursor before the pilcrow and

Well, I had your problem all figured out and a reply composed when I
realized that it didn't quite fit. I hope your description isn't quite
accurate, because if it is, a bug I've seen in previous versions of FM
is even worse in 7.2 (which I recently moved to).

A text inset is an object, like a variable or xref, that sits in a
specific location in the text flow. What people usually refer to as the
pgf that "follows" the text inset is actually the "container" pgf in
which it sits. If you have View > Text Symbols on and you click the text
inset to select it, you'll see that the selection extends past the end
of the last pgf in the text inset and down into the "following" pgf.

That would be an annoying "escalation" of the bad
behavior. When I get the chance, I'll see if I can duplicate that
problem.

If that's what's happening, I can think of only one easy answer: Always
use a special pgf format as the text inset container (the "following"
pgf) -- something small to minimize the extra vertical space -- and
start every text inset with that same pgf format.

HTH!

Text insets

It makes sense, but let's be clear about what happens. When you _select_
the pilcrow and then import the text inset, you're actually deleting
that pgf (replacing it with the text inset). It's the same principle as
when you select a pgf and then paste what's on the clipboard -- what you
paste or import _replaces_ what was selected.

The result is that the selected pgf disappears and the pgf that
_followed_ it becomes the container of the text inset (click the text
inset to highlight it and you'll see that that's the case). Since
there's text in that pgf separating the text inset from the pilcrow, all
is well.

At least, that's how it worked through FM 6. Stephen's problem suggests
things got worse in FM 7.2 :-o

Thanks in advance,
Laura

Printed another document: cross references print in color.

Printed on another color printer: cross references still only print in B

I tried researching the answer but I must not be using the right terms.

Framemaker platform support

2008-06-18 Thread Leo Paoletti

Hello,
We're considering upgrading Framemaker and our computers. I have a couple of
questions that I hope someone can help me out with.

Is Framemaker 8 supported on Windows Vista 64-bit computers? If not, does it
run on Vista 64-bit computers? Based on what I'm seeing in the Adobe KB, I
think not.
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb403291=1

I understand that Framemaker 7.2 is not supported on Vista. However, is anyone
successfully running it? If so, are you running it on a 32-bit Vista or a
64-bit Vista?

Thanks,
Leo Paoletti

Ps: Is the http://www.frameusers.com/ website still in operation. I received an
error when I went there today.

Template question, FrameMaker to RoboHelp HTML

2008-06-18 Thread Matt Sullivan
Hi Steve,

Have you considered applying a unique tag to the anchor para, mapping it to a
css style?

I'm not a css code jockey, but you should then be able to override the
placement inherited from FM

I'm out of the office right now, so email & cell phone (714 585 2335) are the

In the template designed for "Publish as PDF," all of the anchored
frames are aligned as "Center" and extend to both margins. The Inside
and Outside margins are set to 48. Some of the graphics are "Offset
From Left" = 114.0 pt (This makes them flush with the Body paragraph
tag). Others are "Offset From Left" = 130.0 pt (this makes them flush
with the "indented body" paragraph tag).

I've created a new template where the Body paragraph tag is set to 0.0
pt. And the "indented body" paragraph tag is set to 16.0 pt.

When I import the FrameMaker book into RoboHelp (after applying the
new template), everything else looks fine, but all graphics are hard
set (Offset From Left) to 114pt and 130pt. (And this looks bad.)

I want to format the anchored frames and graphics in each template so
that when the "Publish to PDF" template is applied, the graphics are
flush with the 114pt Body paragraphAnd when the "Import to
RoboHelp WebHelp" template is applied, the graphics are flush with the
0.0 pt Body paragraph.

Paragraphs are easy to manipulate in a template. But I can find no
way to manipulate anchored frames or graphics. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Stan

adding user variables to the TOC

2008-06-18 Thread Lynne A. Price
Deirdre,
A variation of Peter's suggestion to use the Chapter Number system
variable instead of the user variable on the master pages as well. That
way, you only need to specify the number once. Alternatively, instead of
inserting the <$chapnum> building block before <$paratext> in the reference
flow, you can just import variables from your document into the TOC and
insert the variable before <$paratext>. However, using <$chapnum> is more
robust, because it allows a single TOC to contain entries from chapters
with different numbers.

How to automatically import index and cross-reference entries from Word 7 to FM 7.2 or 8?

2008-06-18 Thread Lynne A. Price
Mike,
FM does not have the ability to put markers on top of the other; they
are in a flow and have a sequence. When you view text symbols, you see only
one marker character. This character does not represent a single marker,
but indicates that one or more markers are present at that location. Text
symbols appear in the document window in addition to the actual content of
your document. The marker symbol thus seems to appear between the adjacent
characters. There is no room to display multiple marker symbols; to make
room for them, FM would have to adjust the spacing of the content
characters, possibly affecting line breaks and even page breaks.
You are correct that if you try to select the marker symbol, the marker
window displays information about the first marker at that location. Some
ways to see the others are:

1) Search for markers by selecting "Any Marker" or "Marker of Type" in the
Find pop-up menu in the Find/Change window. Of course, if you choose
"Marker of Type" you'll need to specify the marker type you want to see.
Each time you click Find, the marker window will display another marker.

2) Use the keyboard shortcut Esc h c to highlight the object (e.g.,
character, anchor, marker, variable, cross-reference) following the cursor.
After viewing the first marker in a sequence, press the right arrow to move
past that marker, and press the sequence Esc h c to view the next one.
Repeat as desired.

3) Generate a list of markers with Special > List Of

You can also use a tool such as IXgen to see multiple "piled up"
markers, either as a separate list or expanded into the body text.

Framemaker platform support

2008-06-18 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Leo,

I am running FrameMaker 7.2 on 32-bit Vista without problems.

Hello,
We're considering upgrading Framemaker and our computers. I have a couple of
questions that I hope someone can help me out with.

Is Framemaker 8 supported on Windows Vista 64-bit computers? If not, does it
run on Vista 64-bit computers? Based on what I'm seeing in the Adobe KB, I
think not.
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb403291=1

I understand that Framemaker 7.2 is not supported on Vista. However, is
anyone successfully running it? If so, are you running it on a 32-bit Vista
or a 64-bit Vista?

Thanks,
Leo Paoletti

Ps: Is the http://www.frameusers.com/ website still in operation. I received
an error when I went there today.

Arial being changed to ArialMT in PDF

2008-06-18 Thread Dov Isaacs
You are getting exactly what you ask for (and deserve? :-) )

The font name is "Arial" but the "PostScript name" inside the font
(i.e., what displays inside of Acrobat or Reader) of that particular
font is "ArialMT" where the "MT" is for Monotype, the font foundry
from which it originates.

Thus, what you are getting out of Distiller is perfectly kosher
(assuming you really like Arial)!

Adobe PDF failures ... backwards from what I had recently.

2008-06-18 Thread syed.hos...@aeris.net
Hi, all.

Please pardon the long e-mail here!

In the past, with FrameMaker 7.2 and Acrobat Pro 7, on the TAGS menu, I
had to *uncheck* the "Generate Tagged PDF" to make it work without
crashing.

Then, with FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat Pro 8, on the TAGS menu, I had to
*check* the "Generate Tagged PDF" to make it work without crashing. This
last has been working fine since I upgraded months back.

Today, for some strange reason, I would get a FM crash, with both "Save
as PDF" and with printing to the Adobe PDF printer.

2. With the third one, FrameMaker would simply crash and "go
away" - without even the usual menu box telling me that it had saved a
file for the Adobe folks to look at!

So, I tried the above *uncheck*'ed TAGS menu setting (i.e., went back to
what I used to use with FrameMaker 7.2 for the heck of it). And, sure
enough, now everything is working fine again! With no change to the .FM
documents in the book whatsoever. The crash and failure to generate the
PDF went away - both with "Save as PDF" and with printing to the Adobe
PDF printer!

So ... what on earth is this problem? What is "Tagged PDF" and why is it
so problematic for FrameMaker?
