Re: [Framers] TOC issue

2021-12-17 Thread Lise Bible
Tammy,
I have no Frame advice to offer (I am sure you've tried everything I would
have tried, and I'd be equally frustrated in your situation), but as a
workaround, can you manually create these links in Acrobat after the fact?
To be clear, you shouldn't HAVE to do this, but in a pinch...

Good luck!

Re: [Framers] Appearance of graphics in the generated PDF

2021-08-05 Thread Lise Bible
Tammy, that sounds hair-tearingly-out frustrating!
I don't have any brilliant technical clues to help you, but would it be
just as fast (e.g., slow) to use Snag-It to capture the equation in Word
when it's on-screen, and save that?
If you're already opening the exported images from Word in Snag-it, would
that save a step?
Or does that not result in any great advantage or better resolution? I
don't have Snag-it on this computer so I don't know what the image
resolution options are when capturing.

Good luck!

[Framers] version numbering and document control

2021-02-12 Thread Lise Bible
Hello, Framers,
Historically (I inherited this system) the manuals for my company have
listed the month and year as the revision. And that has worked ok, except
when more than one update needed to happen within a month. And my boss
wants me to switch to a numbered revision system.

But what has me stymied is, what number do I start with? It doesn't really
make sense to me to start at 1 because some of these manuals are now 10
years old and have had multiple revisions/updates.

Any advice?

(My boss also wants me to implement some kind of document control system, a
la what we do with engineering drawings in Autodesk Vault but that's a
secondary step and one I have not figured out yet. He has said he wants to
put manuals in Vault like the drawings are, and I'm still not sure how well
that would work. I could see maybe uploading pdfs, but I'm thinking doing
this with the frame files would get messy.)

Thanks,
Lise

[Framers] Frame 2019 Version: 15.0.4.751...current?

2019-11-01 Thread Lise Bible
Framers,
This feels like a dumb question, but I haven't been able to find an answer
elsewhere. I have installed Frame 2019 on a new hard drive. If I choose
Help>Updates from my menu, it runs the updater and says my app is up to
date. And if I choose Help>About, I see it listed as Version: 15.0.4.751.

And yet, there is a product updates button on the welcome screen, and it
looks like there are 4 updates for Frame 2019.
https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows

Do I trust the updater? Is 15.0.4.751 the latest version?

(I had previously used Frame 8, and those updates were a more manual
process, hence my confusion.)

Thanks,
Lise

[Framers] Frame 2019 & Creative Cloud (Acrobat DC) order of install?

2019-10-26 Thread Lise Bible
Framers,
I am getting a hard drive Monday, so all software will need to be
reinstalled. I'm on Frame 2019 and Creative Cloud on Windows 10.

Last time I got a new hard drive I was on Frame 8 and Acrobat 9 and if I
recall correctly, the recommendation was to install Frame before Acrobat;
is this still the case with Frame 2019? Should I have Frame 2019
installed before
Creative Cloud (including Acrobat DC), or does it matter?

My chat with Adobe was not super-helpful to me in this regard as the person
with whom I was chatting thought that Frame 2019 was part of Creative Cloud
and could be installed through the Creative Cloud app. Would be nice if
that was the case, but alas, no.

My initial question to them was about needing to deactivate my current install
of Frame before installing on a different hard drive, and they did inform
me that I should sign out of my account on Frame before installing it on a
new hard drive, so that part of the answer was helpful to me. My inquiry
about order of install (in regards to Acrobat) was a follow-up question.

Thanks,
Lise

Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

Fred,
I'm going to be in the same boat (new computer) soon, so just to clarify
your recommendation:
Frame first
then Acrobat DC
(so that the newer Acrobat can replace whatever "headless" version of
distiller that Frame installs)
?

Thanks,

Re: [Framers] Question about differentiating heading levels

2017-01-23 Thread Lise Bible
Tammy,

We have decreasing font size for headers.

Heading 1: 16 pt bold, across all columns and side head
Heading 2: 14 pt bold, side head
Heading 3: 12 pt bold, in column
We sometimes go down to Heading 4, which is 10 pt bold italic, in column
Body text is 10 pt

May the Font Be With You.

Re: [Framers] Windows XP versus Windows Explorer (Ding!)

2016-11-16 Thread Lise Bible
I'm on Win 7 64 bit, but if I'm trying to rename a folder and get that
message I will try changing the view in Windows Explorer first (before
resorting to a reboot). I like list or detail view as a default, but when I
change it to icons and try again, it often lets me rename the folder. Worth
a shot?

Frame 8-compatible file format?

2015-01-06 Thread Lise Bible
Framers,
A little googling did not clarify anything for me, so I thought I'd ask
here.
I'm on Frame 8; none of the added features in subsequent releases seemed
relevant enough to me to justify upgrading (and it works fine for me on
Windows 7).
The issue I have is that I need to send some manuals out for quote to be
translated, and I want to make sure that the files they send back to me,
can be opened in Frame 8. (I figured it's better to clarify upfront, rather
than chance running into issues later. I have no idea what the translation
companies are able to provide, but Murphy dictates that if I don't clarify,
I'll run into issues.)

Now, I know you can't save a file opened in Frame 12 directly as a Frame
8-compatible file, but it looks like you can save as .mif--can that be
opened in Frame 8?
According to this thread, https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1379901, there
are two different MIF versions?
What format do I need to request they return, so that I can open the
translated files, once translated?

Thanks,
Lise

Re: cross reference crash postscript

2014-05-01 Thread Lise Bible
Fred,
I am also running Frame 8 on Win 7 (but unstructured). I have not had your
cross-reference crashing problem, but I did have issues when I first moved
to my new computer--I did have crashing issues, but I don't know that there
was any consistent cause.
Once I got myself fully patched, though, it's been (mostly) fine.
So that would be my only suggestion. (I was re-installing Frame 8 from CD
(DVD? don't remember) so there had been a few patches after that initial
release.)
I'm at Version 8.0p277

My colleague is also working in FrameMaker 10 on Windows 7 and she can’t

gets other characters instead. She’s resorted to copying and pasting from

Re: Compatibility of old(ish) Software with Windows 7

2014-02-11 Thread Lise Bible
I'm on Frame 8, which is only slightly newer than Carrie (who originally
asked the question, and is on Frame 7), and am using it with no problems*
on Windows 7, 64-bit.
*once I got it fully patched, as the re-install was from the original Frame
8 disk (I went from an XP machine to new Win 7 machine).
Note: if you are moving to a new machine, and re-installing the same
software, on your old machine, open Frame, and deactivate it before
installing it on your new machine (HelpDeactivate).

Sorry, I have no tips or tricks about what other software runs on Win 7 vs
XP, just figured I'd chime in about using an older version of Frame on Win
7.

Thanks,
Lise

The pro editions of Windows 7 offer an XP Mode for running old

Re: FrameMaker 11 and referenced graphics pointing to wrong drive: nightmare alley

2013-05-14 Thread Lise Bible
I recall that when I've had Frame files (that had been moved) looking for
graphics in a certain directory and couldn't find them, if I pointed the
first one to the correct directory, it found the rest in that same
directory.
Now, caveats being that in my case, the frame files and the graphics files
are both on sub-directories of the same network drive name, and all the
graphics files are in one folder, so I don't know if this works if it has
to navigate to the root of a different drive, as Fred references below.

I think his only option is moving the directories to the drive letter that
FrameMaker is expecting to use. But I'm not sure because I have *never*
kept files for any FrameMaker project in more than one partition because I
know that this practice forces FrameMaker to use absolute paths to the
referenced files rather than relative paths. As much as possible (and it's
not always possible when using any files that are shared among multiple
documents) I have always kept all files for any given document in
subdirectories within the same branch of my directory structure.

Re: Paragraph Formats Alternate Reality

2013-03-21 Thread Lise Bible
Nancy,
I'm on Frame 8, and I'm not sure this is the solution to your problem, but
my company decided to standardize on Arial instead of the existing TNR, so
I've had to change fonts in my manuals.
I found that if I changed the font in the paragraph style, nothing changed,
but if I changed the default font in the character style, it would change.
(I opened Character Designer, clicked somewhere in the margin (to make sure
no text was selected), then changed the Family to Arial, making sure
everything else was set to As Is, then pressed Update All)

Now, this is because ALL text in my documents needed to change to Arial. If
you only need one paragraph style to change, this might not work for you.

Thanks,
Lise

 Nothing changes.

 2. Saved the file to .mif, opened it in Notepad, replaced TimesNewRoman

 many. Nothing changes.

I've doublechecked directories and timestamps. All the files are coming

What the heck is going on? What am I missing???

switch between 8.5x11 and A4 sized pages within the same book?

2013-02-21 Thread Lise Bible
Fellow Framers,
I'm mostly a lurker, but have found the wealth of knowledge shared by this
list's members to be quite helpful!

I have a manual (I'm on Frame 8) in which I've used conditional text to
show/hide tables, text, parts lists depending on if it's for the American
market or European.
This manual originated for a US-made product so it started life with 8.5x11
(US-letter size) pages. And it didn't even occur to me that it might need
to be A4-sized for the European market.

Is there a good way to switch back and forth between A4 and 8.5x11 page
sizes, depending on which version of a book you want to print?

I have the sneaking suspicion that I will have to break this into two
separate books, but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone had recommendations.

Thanks,
Lise

Framemaker 8 freezing with Win7, do Frame 8 patches apply to Win7?

2012-10-02 Thread Lise Bible
Fellow Framers, I am a longtime lurker, occasional poster. I've found this
list to be quite informative, so maybe you can help me out.

I'm using Frame 8.0p266 on a Windows 7 machine, 64-bit, 2.4GHz processor,
12GB of RAM.
I was running Frame 8 on my previous WinXP computer, with no issues, though
I do not recall if that one was patched; that computer has since been wiped
and given to a colleague, so there's no way to check.

But my Frame 8.0p266 has been doing the occasional freezing, i.e., it will
stop responding, and my only choice is to kill it, thereby losing work. I
think it happens when I'm selecting text, but I'm not entirely sure.

In doing some googling, I have discovered that there are existing patches
that are as-yet unapplied to my machine, per

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?platform=Windowsproduct=22

But when I choose HelpUpdates, Adobe Updater informs me that There are no
updates available at this time. Please note that some updates for the
following products cannot be determined at this time: Adobe Updater
And this seems odd to me because obviously there are newer patches. Is this
because I'm on Windows 7?

The system requirements for the updates I do not have (8p273 and 8p277),
list: Microsoft® Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista® (trial
version not supported on Windows 2000), which specifically leaves out
Windows 7.

Now, is that because Win7 was not available when this patch was released,
or is it not compatible with Win7?

In general I understand being fully patched is a good idea, but I am
hesitant to try this if it's not happy with Win7.

Other potential fixes for my freezing include running as compatible with
WinXP SP3; but with the current security settings mandated by my corporate
overlords, I am unable to run Frame 8 as compatible with WinXP SP3 without
an administrator password, and that's not an option for me.
My helpful IT person did grant me full access to the FrameMaker8 sub-folder
on my hard drive, in case that was what was causing any issues (but I just
froze again, so evidently not).

So is patching my best hope? (Help me, Obi-Wan...)

Thanks,
Lise

Stab in the dark, as I'm not a Frame expert, but when I've encountered
this, when Frame tells me the graphic is missing and opens a dialog box
asking for me to indicate where the graphic is, if I find the first one, if
the rest of them are in the same folder, it'll re-link the rest of them.
I'm on Frame 8, don't know if it matters...

Ok, so here's a thought--can you make a copy of your whole original set of
files and graphic folders (untranslated), then delete the fm files in
there, and copy and paste in the translated fm files? Would they then be
looking for the graphics in the right place?

Helping FM find graphics files

2012-04-24 Thread Lise Bible
Stab in the dark, as I'm not a Frame expert, but when I've encountered
this, when Frame tells me the graphic is missing and opens a dialog box
asking for me to indicate where the graphic is, if I find the first one, if
the rest of them are in the same folder, it'll re-link the rest of them.
I'm on Frame 8, don't know if it matters...

Thanks,
Lise

Re: Vertical line at right edge of graphics frame

2011-09-09 Thread Lise Bible
I'm on Frame 8.0p277, and I occasionally get that. I select the anchored
frame, set the pen to none (even though, yes, it's already set to none),
save, and re-save the book as pdf, and that usually resolves it.

Not that helpful, maybe, but that's my workaround. It only happens
occasionally to me...I just figured it was a pdf hiccup--guessed it might
have something to do with memory--seems to happen more when I have a lot of
other stuff open.

 Environment:
   TCS 2 (FrameMaker 9p255)
Windows 7 (also seen in XP SP3)
.png images created from CorelDraw X5 (also seen in screen captures done
with Snagit 7—I know, it’s old)
Images imported by reference to graphics frames anchored to a Body
 paragraph
Image resolution typically 300 dpi (screen captures at 150 dpi)
Image size varies, never larger than half a page

Problem: A tin black or grey line appears along the right edge of some—not
all—anchored frames. The line is not visible in FrameMaker, only when
printed or saved as PDF using Adobe PDF printer.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

 Thanks for your help,

Re: Creating right tab with leader consisting of unbroken (mid) line [resend]

2009-09-30 Thread Lise Bible
Just off the top of my head...I''m not a Frame expert by any means, but
would a table work? 2 columns, 2 rows, put your text in the top right-most
cell, then straddle the two cells in that column. Make sure the paragraph
style for your text includes Cell Vertical Alignment= Middle, and make it
right-aligned. Then re-size the columns to the size of your text (you may
have to modify the default cell margins in Table Designer to get the
placement you need.)
Then for the left column, make the border between the two cells, whatever
weight of line you need, setting the rest of the ruling for the table to
none?

On FM 8, I can set an m-dash as the leading character for a right tab
by inserting it in text and copy-and-pasting it into the Leading

don't connect, it'll be more complicated, but not bad. On the Font tab
for the paragraph, set the spread to -20% to eliminate the gaps.

This creates a problem though -- it'll also squish the text characters.

To fix this, create a new character tag that has all properties set to
As Is except the Spread -- which you leave at 0. Apply it to the text
in your leading tag, and it should revert the text to normal
appearance. You may be able to automate this using the Autonumbering
tab to set the character tag -- I didn't test that part of it.

I have a simple question (I think). I Would like to create a visual

at the mid-level of the characters in the text. Roughly it would look
  like this:

by splicing together a series of en- or em-dashes.

I can get something close to this effect using a Right Tab, and
specifying the leader character as underscore (_):

    mytext

But the problem is that the line falls at the bottom on the
characters, when I want it in the middle.

I don't seem to be able to specify an en- or em-dash as the leader
character for the tab. But perhaps I missed something. Is this
possible (and will it produce the result I want)? Failing that, is
there another way of achieving the kind of effect I'm describing?

I am using FrameMaker 7.2. (If what I'm wanting to do is possible only
in a later version of FrameMaker, that would be interesting to know.)

  Thanks,

Frame 9 save as to open in Frame 8?

2009-08-05 Thread Lise Bible
Quick question: A translation company from whom we're getting a quote is
asking if I can accept FM 9 files. I have FM 8, so I don't know what save as
options FM 9 has for compatibility...
I did a search on adobe's website, but didn't find a clear answer.

Should I ask them to save the files as .mif from FM9? Is that the best way
to go?

Thanks,

Re: FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and ...lost image data

2008-06-20 Thread Lise Bible
I had similar error messages with Frame files with OLE links to Excel
spreadsheets, but mostly randomly--sometimes I had the Excel file open by
mistake, and that might have triggered it, I'm not sure. I could never find
the exact cause. Was running Frame 7.1 on XP, SP2.

A colleague told me she got those errors all the time (same OLE links to
Excel files). She's going to be upgrading to Frame 8, but she's getting a
new computer as well, so there are too many variables there to narrow down
one cause if it ends up fixing her problem.

Have upgraded to Frame 8, still XP, SP2. Haven't had it that long, but I
haven't had any error messages so far. Doesn't mean that the upgrade fixed
the problem, though.

Using PDF's or graphics isn't a good fix for me, because we're linking to
parts lists that appear in the product manual and a separate parts book for
the entire product line. The advantage of OLE links to the Excel files is
that it's always linked to the latest and greatest version.

So thanks for the heads-up about SP3. I don't know if our IS dept. will be
rolling that out soon or not. Fortunately, I don't believe there are any
imminent plans to upgrade us to Vista.

Of course, if you're not using XP and haven't installed SP3, something

FrameMaker vs. InDesign CS3

2008-01-24 Thread Lise Bible
I currently create manuals in FrameMaker for the products that are
manufactured at this location. Deliverable is pdf and printed matter.

I've been using unstructured FrameMaker 7.1 on Win XP and the marketing
department has been using InDesign CS2 on Win XP. They're planning to
upgrade to CS3.

I've been asked by the Marketing Manager to investigate whether InDesign CS3
would meet my needs as a replacement for FrameMaker for product manuals so
we could all be on the same platform. I think if I made the case that there
would be serious functionality lost, he wouldn't have a big problem with me
staying with Frame, but I think he's leaning toward standardizing on ID
unless I can make the case otherwise.

Things of concern to me that I can do in Frame but not sure about ID:
cross-references, conditional text, auto-numbering.
Conditional text isn't a deal-killer for me; I've used it in a few manuals,
but it's not something I couldn't do without if it wasn't available.
Cross-references (see figure x on page x, see heading on page x) are
currently used extensively. Wouldn't want to do without those.
Auto numbering (esp. of figures (x+1): currently used extensively. Wouldn't
want to do without that either.

I've done some google searching and the closest I've come to a comparison is
this, but it's a little dated (and refers to OSX)
http://www.fm4osx.org/comp.html

There was a discussion of this a while back (last Feb, I think) here on the
frameusers forum, but I don't think it covered any new features that may
have been included in ID CS3 as opposed to CS2.

The version comparison chart on the Adobe site
(there's a link to a pdf here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/upgrade/)
lists automated bullets and numbering, but I don't know if that will
accommodate what I currently accomplish in Frame with a Figure paragraph
format for the figure label which inserts the next consecutive figure number
automatically.

Has anyone used InDesign CS3 and can give me any insights?
If not available in ID, are there 3rd-party plug-ins for ID that would
accomplish any of these with some kind of elegance and ease?

Thanks,
Lise Bible

If Paste Special (as) Text doesn't work, what I do for text with
formatting I don't want to keep is to paste it into Notepad. I copy the
text, paste into Notepad, select all the text in Notepad, copy, then paste
into your desired document.
Notepad strips all the formatting.

Not as easy as it seems PureText would be, but fairly painless if you're
used to the standard Windows keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-A, Ctrl-V).

Times New Roman, which isn't in my font repertoire. Hence the
 unavailable fonts.

Of course we are supposed to import text from Word and the like, but
sometimes I want to take a shortcut and paste in Word snippets to
rewrite. More heinous, now that my Outlook has been updated to 2007, I
find that text snippets from HTML (or even RTF) emails, which I often
would copy and use verbatim, can no longer be pasted directly into
Frame, but cause the same problem.

The work around for the text snippets, to avoid those awful unavailable
font popups, is to open an HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, paste to an
HTML file, deselect and reselect the text, copy and paste into Frame. (I
used to used Outlook 2003 to do this sometimes, but even this pleasure
 is now denied me.)

The only work-around I've found to get rid of these unavailable fonts is
to use the Remember Missing Font Names option under
FilePreferencesGeneral. You may have to save, close, reselect or
deselect, then perform the procedure again a few times before the
 problem is solved.

 Hi Framers,

I'm sure this is a very novice question, but I need some help.

I'm running Windows XP (SP2), using unstructured FrameMaker 7.2.

Even though I've checked all the paragraph and character tags for stray
fonts and have generated a list of fonts for each file, I get a
Document named xxx uses unavailable fonts... message. The console
displays a font that I know is nowhere in my documents, so how do I get
rid of this pop-up? The more important issue is that because the
documents are reformated on opening because of substitution of fonts, I
get unresolved cross-references alerts on good refs every time I reopen
 saved files.

text inset + cross-references to different files?

2007-10-08 Thread Lise Bible
Hi,
I'm pretty comfortable with Frame to the extent that I know it, but don't
consider myself expert yet.
Using: Win XP Pro, Frame 7.1p116 (Unstructured)

What I'm trying to do:
Re-use text for a group of related product manuals. Each manual is its own
separate book, each chapter is its own separate Frame file.

Currently in each book, the respective maintenance chapter has
cross-references to both figures (in the current file) and headings in the
respective Parts List file (chapter) of the same book. (i.e ., for book
95-03022.book, 22-Maintenance.fm has cross references to Fig. 18, 19,
etc. (in the current file), and cross-references to Optional Tools on page
72 (where Optional Tools is one of the headings on page 72 in
22-Parts.fm(also part of
95-03022.book).

A lot of the text in the maintenance chapters is identical (or, ideally,
should be), except for the figure #'s in the same file or the page # of
the heading in a separate file (See Optional Tools on page XX).

I want to use this same text in 3 or 4 manuals (one of the manuals is less
like the other 3, but does use some of the same text). I'm thinking I will
probably need to create multiple source files for each individual section of
text I want to inset.

I was able to find information in FrameMaker Help about To insert a
cross-reference to a paragraph in a text inset but it seems like that's
talking about inserting a cross-reference *elsewhere in the file* to a
paragraph contained *within the text inset*, and what I think I want to do
is the opposite: insert a cross reference *in the text inset* to a header or
figure *elsewhere in the book*, depending on which book/file this text inset
is inserted.
For example, in book 95-03022, the valve seat diagram is Figure 18, while in
95-03055, the valve seat diagram is Figure 19. And the Optional Tools
header is on page 72 in book 95-03022, but on page 74 in 95-03055.

So I want a cross reference in the text inset to See Figure X where it
will show up as Figure 18 when the text is in 95-03022 and Figure 19 when
the same text is in 95-03055. But I want the text to be a reference, so it
only needs to be edited (or translated) once.

Right now, these manuals exist as 4 separate books, and it seems like this
should be something Frame can handle, but I can't figure out exactly how to
go about doing it.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Lise Bible

RE: How to import Autocad2000 into FM?

2007-06-06 Thread Lise Bible
I use a similar amount of work--don't have Illustrator, but have CorelDraw
12. We actually use AutoCAD 2006, but Corel won't open anything newer than
2000, so I save the CAD drawing down to 2000 (actually, I have AutoCAD set
to save as 2000 by default for this reason), then open in CorelDraw, clean
up any extraneous lines and export to wmf, choosing text when prompted to
export text as text or curves.
Have also tried exporting to .tif and .png but the lines seem clearest with
wmf's.

I'm not sure if this is any less work than your current method, and if
someone has a better suggestion, by all means...

What is the best way to import Autocad2000 into FrameMaker. Current
procedure used involves unusual amount of work, i.e., convert cad file to
pdf, open in Illustrator and cleanup lines so that they aren't fuzzy in
destination FM pdf file. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Does Add List of References Imported Graphics not do it?

Otherwise, theres a tool called Archive Book by Bruce Foster. Compiles
the contents of a book into a separate location and pulls in any
referenced graphics and text insets into Graphics and Text sub
directories.

Subject: List of imported graphics

My apologies in advance - I know that this has been discussed before on
the list, but I can't find it in the archives. I have a graphics folder
for a Frame book that contains not only all of the graphics that are
imported by reference into the various book files, but also, a bunch of
graphic that I don't need to use anymore, that are outdated and/or
incorrect graphics and so on. Before I check all of my folders into
ClearCase, I want to delete these junk graphics that are just taking
up space. How do I go about generating a list of what graphics are
actually used where in the book. (I obviously want to compare this
list to the actual directory contents and nuke those from the directory
that don't appear on the list.) If I had only a small amount of
graphics, I could do this manually, but I have over several hundred
graphics (it's a BIG book), so . . .

Re: CorelDraw Embedded Graphics

2007-05-29 Thread Lise Bible

I've not had the greatest luck using CorelDraw graphics directly in
Frame--most of the manuals I've been editing recently were created by
my predecessor and the graphics were linked tif's which were
originally AutoCAD drawings opened in CorelDraw, edited, then exported
as tif's. However, regarding trying other output formats, recently I
tried exporting graphics from CorelDraw as wmf's, choosing text in the
export text as dialog box (as opposed to curves). Seems to work well
for me.

the text is fine. Does anyone have any ideas when or why this happens, or how to
avoid it. Thanks

Shmuel... I have a vague memory of seeing this in Corel documents long ago. I
would guess [emphasize: guess] that the most likely cause is that the text in
question has been converted into outlines, and then the graphics files have
been created from Corel Draw in a form that FrameMaker can use by a sub-optimal
output filter. There is a parallel issue with, for example, Visio, in which
some versions [all?] of Visio produce poor Postscript.

If this is the case, your only recourses are:

. Revisit the original artwork, if it is available, to try other output formats

. Edit the relevant diagrams in, say, Illustrator, to replace the bad text.

Re: Entry Level Technical Writer - Contract - Moorpark, CA

2007-05-15 Thread Lise Bible

Well, I guess I can kind of see both sides. I've been a tech writer at
my company for a year and a half, and it is frustrating when others
assume that if you can type and spell
(or *not* spell...hey, that's what spell-check is for, right?) then
you're fully qualified to be a tech writer.

But it is hard to break out of the admin mold. I don't have a degree
in English, but I have a BA in Psychology. I majored in Psych because
I thought the classes were really quite interesting, not having a
specific career goal in mind. After college, I started temping, and
ended up in an admin/customer service role at a manufacturing company.
Among other things, I wrote work instructions and the like for my
department, learned PageMaker and became an expert at Word. Two
acquisitions, two office moves and 2 years later, the tech writer
position here opened up, and I applied.

I think my former boss went to bat for me, as they moved the position
out of the marketing department and into the Engineering Services
department (where I was already), and here I am. I've since taken
classes in Frame and a Tech Writing course through University of IL at
Chicago, and I find I have an affinity for the job.

Moral of my story, I guess, is that it's not a bad thing to think
outside the box, hiring-wise, but yes, it is hard to effectively weed
out the unqualified while finding the right person for the job.

I am sure all of us have had the experience of someone totally clueless
thinking all we do is type. Had a gal at one of our square dances from
our church in 1983 tell me that while she is a store clerk, she is going to
become a tech writer, because if you can do it, anyone can do it.

And she went to an interview. Never heard from her again.

You think that's insulting? When we had a req open for another tech
writer in January, we had people from our shipping department and the
warehouse coming to us and asking us if they could apply for the job. As
if Tech Writing was so easy, someone with shipping or warehouse
experience could do it.

Thank you,
