Thank you All for getting back to me. As always MANY good recommendations. I
have decided to go with PureText. After some experimentation, I really like it.
Now to start digging through the 193 pages of Word.

Stay Safe and Healthy Everyone.

Hi,

I also use PureText. Very handy, not only for FrameMaker (e.g. Outlook, Excel,
etc.)!
http://stevemiller.net/puretext/

When I reformat Word imports, I copy my heading format into the clipboard and
then search for the numbering of the equivalent Word format with regular
expressions or wildcards.
Then paste the clipboard content.
Or you can search for the Word paragraph format in FrameMaker and then paste
your format.
The same with list formats.

Yes, tables and graphics must be handled separately.

Best regards

Winfried

I use PureText for copying and pasting as plain text. It works with everything

I thought about this way but I didn't trust the copy/paste function to only
bring over text. You ever have any problems after with garbage left over from

For a faster experience of copy/pasting text, I would use the tip to adjust
your maker.ini to stick TEXT at the beginning of the ClipboardPriorityFormats=
line (ahead of the default UNICODE bit). That way you can copy in Word & paste
in FM as if you had gone through the Paste Special > Text route.

And that is exactly why I go the text route. If I didn't create that Word file,
I don't know whether the person who did set it up right or not.
Usually the answer is "not".

(On a side note, if you set up a Word template, create your own numbering list
styles and assign your own number styles to the list style, and restrict style
usage to the ones you created. You will prevent so many headaches by forcing
users to actually use styles instead of the bloody ribbon bar!)

The Word file I inherited does not use any formatting standard, it's just a 193
pages of mish mash of whatever any given editor felt like doing at the time.
I'm probably going to have to go to text then into Frame and manually assign
the formatting. YUCK :-)

That's exactly the approach I took when I converted nearly 10k pages of docs
from Word (Word 95 in those days) to Frame for a former, former employer. We
had pretty good compliance to the old Word template because we had been using a
complex, scripted conversion to Windows Help, so the conversion actually went
pretty well except for cases of missing graphics source files. (I still curse
the memory of writers who pasted graphics directly into Word.)

The Frame templates I imported into were set up to be semi-structured (tags to
reflect structural function rather than appearance) to facilitate further
migration to XML. But that migration never happened because the parent company
sold off our division and shipped the products and docs off to teams in India.

Hi Rick,

I haven't used any templates, but what I have done is renamed the para tags and
any character tags in the word doc to match what I have in frame (i.e., Heading
1 to Heading One) and then imported the doc file into frame. It seems to work
pretty well. The only thing is, you'll have to go back make separate
files/chapters, and you'll have some minor para/character clean up. And you'll
need to re-import the graphics.

Hope that helps.

No, you did absolutely nothing wrong. Remember that many, many of this list's

may not be reading list messages as regularly as they had been. Of the ones
that are, they perhaps have no solution to offer.

For me, it was 1988 (FM version 3, I think?) on a Sun 3/50 (the one where the
B/W monitor was physically attached to the top of the computer chassis pizza
box).

Peter, the first Windows version was FM 4, I think ... I beta tested it for
Frame Technology then. Came on floppy disks (I think I still have them around
here somewhere)!

Side-bar for those who remember the competition: when you ran spell-check in FM
3, it would correct the word "Interleaf" to "FrameMaker". :)

[Framers] Framemaker 2019 and Tech Comm Suite 2017 and 2019.

2020-02-13 Thread Richard Melanson
Hi Everyone,

I have Tech Comm Suite 2017 with FrameMaker 2017, I then separately upgraded
JUST FrameMaker to 2019. I would now like to upgrade the rest of the products
in my 2017 Suite to 2019 but Adobe says they cannot do this unless I pay for
upgrading FrameMaker again.

I have no hard feelings with Adobe that is their business practice. I am
looking for suggestions on how to get to a complete 2019 suite. Can I sell my
current 2019 FrameMaker license, I am stumped.

And is it even worth upgrading, anyone have 2019 that they can share an opinion
with me.

Thanks a million Everyone.

Rick

Subject: [Framers] Getting an old version of FM

Dear all,

Fortunately i have put aside FM-installation files since I install FM (version
4).
Hence I do not need to search for these in the net. But any other person will
have to.
It's easy to find Adobe's site with the updates of previous versions:
https://supportdownloads.adobe.com/product.jsp?product=22=Windows

But wherefrom do you get the base version? Only from illegal sources such as
https://rahim-soft.com in Kandahar, Afghanistan?
For curiosity I did so and discovered that in the download package there is a
tool included to create a registration key... A help video describes how to use
this illegal method. And the FM installation files turn out to be few days
younger than those in my archive (which had been distributed by Adobe).

It seems that Adobe has now opened a channel to older versions:
https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/kb/downloaded-older-app.html offers to
chat via https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html - because in many cases (at least
in my case) not all older versions are listed in Adobe's order history on the
users account. Or the user (consultant) needs an older version to support a
customer who has that version.

Has anyone of you used this official channel to get an older version of FM, for
example, version 10?

[Framers] Installing FrameMaker 19.

2020-01-28 Thread Richard Melanson
Hi Everyone,

I have been working on this issue off and on for 5 days if you include today. I
have installed Adobe Tech Comm Suite 2017 including FrameMaker. I upgraded
JUST FrameMaker from 2017 to 2019. Every time I try and install 2019, I get an
error that 2017 cannot be found. I even enter the correct serial number for
20129, the Adobe installer acknowledges I am using the correct serial number
but again says it cannot find 2017. I feel very stupid having to ask the list
about an installation issue, so please don't be too hard on me. :-)

Thank you for any and all help you can give me Everyone.

Subject: [Framers] Authoring and distributing a manual for US and non-US
customers

A longtime client who initially distributed their product only in the US was
acquired by a large international firm and now will be required to have their
manuals available to customers in Europe, Asia, and A-Pac. Currently, I am
developing in FM V12 and producing a PDF that is available online.

The only information that I can gather right now is that this new customer base
will also require PDFs.

1. I need to consider that I might be the one handling the logistics of
the translation process to an outside vendor versus any in-house staff.
(They do have folks that deal w/ this issue but they are overworked and
understaffed and right now, can't guarantee that they can take on another
division's translation requirements.)
2. The current source is manual is classic US-approved layout - 8.5 x
11 w/ crop marks for printing specified but my client briefly rattled off their
concern about the A4 requirement for Europe.

So, my questions:

1. How does A4 and any other non-US requirements impact/affect my
template in FM? What do I need to do/plan for/change the layout of so that I
have one single source guide that serves all customers - US and on-US?
2. I know I can learn the logistics of the translation process but
first, any one company/person that you would recommend and what do I have to be
aware of in my FM template knowing that the source will be translated?
Any insight into the translation process/logistics of (what files I have to
provide, what I get back, etc.) would be sincerely appreciated.

Regards and TGIF,

All that means is that you won't get a break on the cheaper upgrade to the
latest version. You still will be able to get a perpetual license for FM2019 -
you'll just pay more for it.

Re: [Framers] OT: (Kinda') Spam to Adobe Partners

2019-08-22 Thread Richard Melanson
I have to admit I am "baffled" as to how Carol got that impression from
Stephan's email.

I am offended that Carol has called out Stephan publicly. This whole request
should have happened privately.

But I am staying on this list because it is too valuable to be to ask to be
removed because I feet offended.

Hi Carol,

I did not, in any way, want to rap on Tammy's knuckles, and I'm ashamed that
one could read this out my mail.

Also, I'm very sad to hear that you have decided to be no longer an Adobe
Partner. However, we fully respect your decision, and I have initiated the
process to remove your profile and all associated data with it (I don't have
the "rights" to do that). Once this process is through, I will update you
off-list.

Stephan, I would like to ask you to remove my entry entirely.
Although this list isn't the appropriate place to ask this, for some reason,
I've taken offense at your replies to this thread. I know you didn't mean them
as such, but when I read your reply to Tammy, I felt like you were rapping her
knuckles. I have never gained a client from my listing on Adobe's site. I
always want to minimize spam (which I always filter out before downloading),
and because I get over 300 spam emails a day, every one I can eliminate will
help).

So thank you for your help.

Whichever license you buy, you always have to download and install it.
You can buy a one-year license for $360 (which you can pay up front or in
monthly installments of $30) or a permanent license for $1000.

Note: I am not a structure expert. I have used structured FrameMaker a little
but I have not tried to create either EDDs or DTDs and wouldn't have the first
idea of how to. ;-)

With that caveat out of the way, the way you worded your message makes it sound
to me like your EDD is set up to use a single cell table to contain your figure
title and the actual figure. There is a known bug in FrameMaker with respect to
inserting a graphic into a table cell and having the graphic import in
miniature. It should have been fixed in Update 3.

If your FrameMaker 2019 is fully updated (should show the version as
15.0.0.603), then drop a line to Amitoj Singh
(amisi...@adobe.com<mailto:amisi...@adobe.com>)

This is a link to the discussion on the FrameMaker forums. It might be of help.

Where but on a FrameMaker list would you find an expert opinion about when it's
the wrong tool for a particular job?

Doing complicated topic reuse using FrameMaker's conditional text is possible,
but it's a painful and time-consuming kludge compared with tools that make it
easy to assemble multiple books from a pool of topics.

The tradeoff is that FrameMaker is better at PDFs than any of those tools.

As a thought, you could use put all the "boxes" into a chapter (family) and
control its appearance with conditions by marking the text for that "box"
with a condition named for the customer. Then all you have to do when you
create a book for a customer is set the Show Conditions to that customer's name
and regenerate. That's actually probably the simplest solution, and FrameMaker
is capable of handling dozens of conditions.

Subject: [Framers] OFF TOPIC: Adobe CS6.

Everyone,
I am currently using adobe CS4, which has Bridge, Device Central, Dreamweaver,
Drive, Extend Script, Extension Manager, FireWorks, Flash Pro, Illustrator,
InDesign, Media Encoder, and Photoshop.

My company will not spring for the subscription for these or even some of
these, so I am left with trying to find someone or someplace to buy a legit CS6
license.

Can anyone here point me in the direction that will help me get a legitimate
license for CS6.

I really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thank you.

Dear friends,
This kills my enthusiasm about FM-15:

This seems to be new in the last build, because I never encountered this
situation during the beta test period.

Re: [Framers] ANN: FrameMaker 2019

2018-08-22 Thread Richard Melanson
My company purchase TC 2017 a little over a year ago, and 44 days after the
purchase, I remember the number because Adobe fussed a little, an upgrade came
out. After pushing Adobe, they gave it to me no charge.

I would guess you will have no problem getting the latest version.

In the past, they have provided free updates to customers who purchased the
older version within some time frame (30 to 90 days) of the new release. But
like a lot of things, you only got it if you asked for it.

I use Microsoft Photo Editor. You can simply select the graphic you
want, copy it and paste it into Photo Editor with no loss of quality and
you also have multiple formats to save it as out of Photo Editor. I use
this for Word XP, 2003, and 2007. Hope this helps.

Esteemed colleagues,

A while back there was a technique noted on this forum for saving a Word

separate folder from the text. Can anyone help me with this technique?
We are converting a number of art-rich Word docs into our Frame

Thanks in advance.

Your brain is probably OK. You can't remember how to do it because it
can't be done. You can mix portrait and landscape pages in the same
document as long as they are the same size. The only way to do what you
want is to use a book and insert the 11 x 17 document at the appropriate
location in the book.

Landscape 11 x 17

2010-08-02 Thread Richard Melanson
OK Framers,

I now officially consider myself brain dead. I, for the life of me,
cannot remember how to put a page that is 11 x 17 landscape into a
document that is all portrait 8.5 x 11 . I have searched through both
the Frame Help manuals I have and I am still dead in the water, sorry
brain dead. May I please ask that someone point me in the correct
direction so I can get this done. I am very embarrassed to have to ask
this :-(

RE: Extracting embedded graphics from Word

Does anyone remember Microsoft Photo Editor. Trying to get photos,
screen captures, any graphic out of Word using everything I have learned
over 16 years being a technical writer never worked. One day I happened
to be on one of the old computers at my home and Microsoft Photo Editor
was installed, so I put the Word file on the old computer, opened it,
copied a graphic from it into Photo Editor by selecting Edit then Past
as New Image in Photo Editor and VOILA, I could save as .BMP, .JPG, etc
with NO QUALITY LOSS. I use the method to this day. Hope everyone finds
this helpful.

 Pat,

The best way I have found to do this is to print the Word document to
PDF, then use Acrobat to extract the applicable pages and crop away
everything except the graphics you need. Then the PDF becomes your
source file for the graphics. This works no matter what the original
graphic format was or how they got into Word.

 Hi -

I have approximately 2000 pages to convert from Word to Frame. The
graphics are embedded but the client wants them imported by reference
in Frame. I tried extracting them from Word by saving a file as HTML

but the graphics became blurry and unusable. They look fine when I
open the Word file in Frame.

Is there a way to extract graphics from Word without losing quality?
Or a utility that converts embedded graphics in Frame into imported-
 by-reference?

 Thanks for any help.

I have not tried taking a Word 2003 file and saving it as 2007 to

Hi all,

I am interested in buying the Adobe Technical Communication Suite (TCS),
and was wondering if anyone had experience of upgrading to the TCS from
a previous version of FrameMaker.

I currently use FM 7.2 and WebWorks ePublisher 9.2. Does anyone know if
FM 9.0 will work with ePublisher 9.2?

If I buy an upgrade to TCS from Fm 7.2, can I continue to use FM 7.2 and
install the other components of the TCS? If I continue to use FM7.2, can
I use it with the Acrobat 9.0 Pro Extended in the TCS?

Thanks,

Edwin Tudsbery

drawing
book. If Engineering is changing a drawing, it is taken out of its
original directory and placed into a pending directory waiting for the

DCO and the new drawing to become available. When Engineering moves
the
file, this breaks the import by reference link thus alerting me that
my
drawing book needs to be updated.

Its at this point I run into my problem of not being able to get by
the
Missing File window. I have also run into the scenario you state below

where multiple files have been moved for updating. I get an updated
drawing placed back into its original directory, Frame recognizes the
new drawing and moves on to the next missing file and sticks, its as
if
the Ignore and Skip functions just don't work.

OK, I see now.

If multiple missing files are all in the same new location, say
../pending_graphics, then in the FM Missing Files dialog, you only need
to identify the new path once for the first missing file. FM will look
in that same location for the other missing ones, rather than bothering
you again.

Of course, with your workflow, you'll have to point FM back to the
original location once the changed files are DCOed. A PITA, for sure...

Personally, I think the workflow leaves a lot to be desired. If a
graphics directory is the repository for files imported into FM by
reference, then those files should never be removed, only replaced by
newer versions with the same name.

A different alerting system can surely be devised. For instance, if
there is a file xyz_123.png in the ../graphics directory, the appearance
of a file with the same name in the ../pending_graphics directory should
be enough of an alert without the former being removed. If the engineers
can't/won't leave the former where it is pending DCO of the latter, then
perhaps you should use a different directory as the source for the
graphics. Copy all the files in ../graphics to your /docsource_graphics
directory. A script could do that. A script could also look at
../pending_graphics periodically to alert you to upcoming changes.

reference, then those files should never be removed, only replaced by
newer versions with the same name.

Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson
Hi Framers,

I have Frame 8 with all the updates/patches running on a WinXp system
with 3gig RAM, 500gig HD, and a 2GHz Core 2 CPU. I have about 55
drawings imported by reference in a single Frame file. When one or more
of the imported by reference drawings changes, Frame gives the option to
update the path to the drawing or to skip the file or ignore all missing
files. When I try to select skip this file or ignore all missing files,
frame just redisplays the Missing File window. I have made sure Frame is
not looking for a different drawing, I cannot get Frame to skip or
ignore. Anyone ever had this problem, thank you all in advance for your
help.

Thank you for your quick response David. I cant get by the Missing File

redisplaying the Missing File window. Frame will not allow me to skip or

Rick,
The only way that I can see is that something in the path or filename of
the graphics must be different or you aren't saving the Frame file once
you have redirected the file to point to the proper graphic file
location.

When you open a Frame file, that can't locate a referenced graphic, and
you select to skip this file, the next time you open that particular
Frame file, it will again ask for the correct graphic file location,
even if you have saved the file.

Check the path and filename of the referenced graphic files. The
complete path and filename MUST remain identical.

RE: Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson
My apologies Richard, you did state this in an earlier response.

I use the import by reference function as a kind of alerting system. My
Engineering group has a bunch of directories filled with schematic and
mechanical drawings they convert to jpg or png or pdf. I then import by
reference from these directories into my Frame file to create a drawing
book. If Engineering is changing a drawing, it is taken out of its
original directory and placed into a pending directory waiting for the
DCO and the new drawing to become available. When Engineering moves the
file, this breaks the import by reference link thus alerting me that my
drawing book needs to be updated.

Its at this point I run into my problem of not being able to get by the
Missing File window. I have also run into the scenario you state below
where multiple files have been moved for updating. I get an updated
drawing placed back into its original directory, Frame recognizes the
new drawing and moves on to the next missing file and sticks, its as if
the Ignore and Skip functions just don't work.

Um, you can't open it because it can't find one or more graphics
imported by reference, right?

Well, I hate to repeat myself, but: I have to wonder why the file path
or name of your imported-by-reference drawings keeps changing. What is
it about your workflow that causes this problem to keep coming up? Maybe
you can fix that part so this just doesn't happen anymore.

Or to deal specifically with the immediate problem:

1) In the Missing File dialog, FM tells you the path and name of the
file that's missing. Make a note of it, and then cancel.

2) Put a file of the correct name in the correct location -- preferably
the actual file that should be used, but any file of that type will do.

3) Try opening the FM file again. If the Missing File dialog reports
another missing file, try the Ignore option, and if that doesn't work,
repeat step 2.

4) Repeat step 3 until the FM file opens.

Once it's open, you can try the MIF wash business, but I strongly
suggest you instead focus on finding out why you keep having these
missing file problems and fixing that.

HTH!
Richard

I cant get by the Missing File
window. I can click on ignore or skip 100 times and Frame just keeps
redisplaying the Missing File window. Frame will not allow me to skip or
ignore, I cannot get access to the Frame file unless I update to the new
drawing.

Rick,
The only way that I can see is that something in the path or filename of
the graphics must be different or you aren't saving the Frame file once
you have redirected the file to point to the proper graphic file

In the Misssing File dialog, you're selecting Ignore All Missing Files
and clicking Continue, and FM just keeps displaying the dialog? That's
decidedly odd...

OTOH, I have to wonder why the file path or name of your
imported-by-reference drawings keeps changing. What is it about your
workflow that causes this problem to keep coming up? Maybe you can fix
that part so this just doesn't happen anymore.

Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson
I was unemployed for a while a few years ago and through the generosity
of Omni Systems, I received a copy of MIF2Go. After the response below,
"wash as MIF" caught my attention I Googled it. This appears to be a
function of MIF2Go, I am probably stating what everyone already knows
:-) Anyway, I do NOT have the "wash as MIF" option in the file menu of
Frame. How do I get it?

Before resorting to what Dov Isaacs calls "reinstallsheimer's disease",
I'd try a quick "wash as MIF" operation on the offending file. It seems
much more likely to me that something has become corrupt in the one
document file that Rick is having problems with rather than FrameMaker
itself having become corrupted.

No, SaveAs MIF and the Omsys Wash As MIF menu entry do the same thing.
Only difference is that SaveAs takes a couple manual steps and the menu is a

Import by Reference Question/Bug ?

2009-08-18 Thread Richard Melanson

Well, I hate to repeat myself, but: "I have to wonder why the file path
or name of your imported-by-reference drawings keeps changing. What is
it about your workflow that causes this problem to keep coming up? Maybe
you can fix that part so this just doesn't happen anymore."

HTH!
Richard

Finally, does anyone with FM use two screens? I am unhappy with all
these boxes and pods in FM9 and would like them all on a second screen

I've got FM 9 running with three monitors. Multiple monitors are great!
I tend to keep a file manager and web browser up on the left and my main
work in the center. The righthand monitor is a high-end color correction
monitor.
I usually only fire it up when I'm also working on graphics, but it also
comes in so handy for those times that I really need a lot of windows

With FM, you can put the various panels/pods on one (or more) of the
peripheral monitors, and keep your central screen free to display only
the document you are working on. You can even have multiple FM documents
open on multiple monitors.

FM9 and two monitors

I too have multiple monitors and use Frame and the monitors as Mike has
described below. Best thing since the invention of sliced bread ;-)

I've got FM 9 running with three monitors. Multiple monitors are great!
I tend to keep a file manager and web browser up on the left and my main
work in the center. The righthand monitor is a high-end color correction
monitor.
I usually only fire it up when I'm also working on graphics, but it also
comes in so handy for those times that I really need a lot of windows
open.

Friends of FremeMaker,

Before blaming the bad customer support of Adobe for some situation, please
consider the following (my personal opinion/experience):

- Will You get manufacturer support for a 15 year old car? You may find a garage
somewhere out there which still has some spare parts in their backyarad or
have
found out that some parts of the new cars also fit in the old ones.
But You need
to thind this yourself (with the help of Your friends).

- Once we have an FM-realease 9 available, and related software
(Acrobat) has also
reached level 9 one can not assume that all combinations of old-new versions
are
working. There is no such thing as guaranteed backwards compatibility. Have
You
tried to run Word-6 macros in Word-2007? Even upwards compatibility is rare.

- FrameMaker is one of the most tolerant programs I know concerning age of
documents.
You can still open version 3 documents in FM-9 and always save at least 1
level
lower than the current version is. In FM-9 you even can save in MIF- 7. This
is to
serve the 'before Unicode' environments. Of course the development leaves
certain
functions behind (FM-9 does not support the virtual fonts needed until FM-7
for
non-western languages). At which date cars lost their hand crank or the
windows
hand lever? If a thunderstorm arrives you need to have the key for the car to
close
  the windows!

- If it works, don't fix it. There are so many automatic processes out there
using
the good old FM-5.5 on Unix (e.g. Statistisches Amt des Kantons Luzern,
Schweizerische
Nationalbank) generating statistical brochures and books month after month.
They will
use this mechanism even after Adobe may have ceased to exist.

- Like any company also Adobe wants to make money with their work. In recent
time
Adobe has increased interaction with their customers significantly and fixing
problems in FrameMaker really has a new pace. Do You get fixes for Windows 2K
any
more? Of course support always concentrates on the new products and
deminishes for
the old ones. Even companies have only a limited 'brain' to keep knowledge.

I've enjoyed reading all the input on this thread, and I had a few more
thoughts.

Unfortunately, the way Reid writes it below, it looks like anyone can
have the writer role. I would've written:

4. Technical Writer who knows enough to understand the SME, learns about
the audience and its lingo, distills all the essentials out of these to
make an easy to absorb document, and knows the tools and formats well
enough to do it all quickly.

In any job, I think people need their core skills but also an
understanding and certain competency in the skills of those around them.
To that extent, I'm sure engineers can and do write decent docs
sometimes, but they're probably more efficient at their engineering
tasks.

I'm pretty sure we all know this, but it is exactly this that is
important to communicate in the case of this pointy-haired boss. Nor
does the boss seem to understand how a good writer can save money and
improve customer satisfaction. To be a good writer, you also have to
understand where management is coming from...

BTW, I actually don't think it's productive for writers to use big words
for the sake of using big words. Writers must use whatever words speak
to their audience.

I think the list agrees that not just anybody can write a good manual.

And No, writers cannot be just anybody.
They must be committed, they need to love language, and as Annie
Dillard says ...you really need to like words...
 words such as 'transmogrify'

Or, if you will extend the metaphor to IT, endianess.

The best writing happens as a collective effort with the writer at the

center. So, for example, take manuals. To write a good manual, one
 needs:
 1. Subject matter experts for authoritative content 2. Enthusiastic
reviewers who know the audience and have exposure to the subject
matter 3. Editors who know the language 4. The technical writer

Trying as a single individual to serve in roles 1 through
4 is possible, but the more 'eyes' you have scanning the pages the
better the expected outcome. This is especially true if you are
writing complete books, manuals, and periodicals, from scratch.

There is also an equally beneficial flip side to this postulate.
If you find either transmogrify or endianess to be ugly, and if
you think anybody in particular can plant a garden, repair an
automobile, or write a technical manual, you might be management
 material.

almost as bad.

I just checked in the FM7 book Sarah O'Keefe wrote, and it appears
Webworks *Standard*, the one Nancy was "required"
to use, does not even support HTML Help at all. You'd have to use the
regular HTML output, then create the index, toc, project file, alias and
map files by hand, or at best do it with HTML Help Workshop, which is
almost as bad.

If the client is merely trying to save money by using a "free" tool,
we'll *give* her a copy of Mif2Go. Nobody should have to go through
that process to keep a job...

RE: Technical Writing Certificate

I would like to politely disagree. I have a Certificate from
Northeastern U. in Boston and it has served me very well. I am fortunate
enough to have a strong technical background so maybe that is why the
Certificate has been more than enough for me when job hunting. I have

None of the technical writing certificates that I know about are worth
the investment. To evaluate a certificate, investigate how widely it is
used by those in the field, and by those hiring in the field.

IMHO, the better approach is a technical writing degree, even an
associate's degree has more value than a testing certificate. The
problem with a tech writing degree is finding an accredited educational
institution with a well-developed curriculum. I have been associated

Importing Multi Page Tiffs, How ??

2009-01-26 Thread Richard Melanson
I posted this yesterday and was just wondering if anyone received it,
thank you.

Hello Framers,

I have spent the last couples of hours trying to find an answer to this
question. I am importing by reference TIFFs into a Framemaker 8 file.
The TIFFs are a single file with multiple pages, but Frame is only
importing the first page. What am I missing here, I sure hope this is
not embarrassingly easy answer. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Thank you all very much for responding to my question.

One important fact I may have left out, I am importing the TIFF by
reference and I do NOT have any control over the Master I am importing.
I cannot convert it, dissect it, etc :-) My hands are tied, I have to
use the tiff as it exists on my network.

Multi-page tiffs are pretty common really.

I remember replying to this, so I am not certain why it has come up
again. But anyway I suggested opening the tiff in an application that
supports multi-page tiffs (probably *not* Photoshop) and print the file
to PDF (press-quality settings if you want to print it). This produces a
multi-page PDf which can be easily imported into FM.

May be worth opening a bug on it.

The only work-around I can suggest is to either cut the TIF into
single pages with something like Photoshop or create a PDF from it, so

you can select which page to display.

RE: Importing Multi Page Tiffs, How ??

2009-01-26 Thread Richard Melanson
An update or maybe a summation :-)
The TIFF files I have been referring to are controlled by our
Engineering Department. I reach out to a network drive and import by
reference the TIFFs Engineering makes available. I cannot do anything to
the TIFFs but import them! So unless I can find a way for Framemaker to
see all the pages in the TIFF files, I am dead in the water.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, lets hope someone can pull the
rabbit out of the TIFF, aahhh, I mean hat!! :-)

Some of our older scanned documents are multi-page TIFFs. I keep a copy
of Paperport Deluxe (version 7.0, that came with a long gone scanner) on
my computer solely because it can split these files into individual
graphics.

Importing Multi Page Tiffs, How ??

2009-01-26 Thread Richard Melanson
An update or maybe a summation :-)
The TIFF files I have been referring to are controlled by our
Engineering Department. I reach out to a network drive and import by
reference the TIFFs Engineering makes available. I cannot do anything to
the TIFFs but import them! So unless I can find a way for Framemaker to
see all the pages in the TIFF files, I am dead in the water.

Thank you all for the great suggestions, lets hope someone can pull the
rabbit out of the TIFF, aahhh, I mean hat!! :-)
Rick

Some of our older scanned documents are multi-page TIFFs. I keep a copy
of Paperport Deluxe (version 7.0, that came with a long gone scanner) on
my computer solely because it can split these files into individual
graphics.

Importing Multi Page Tiffs, How ??

2009-01-20 Thread Richard Melanson
I posted this yesterday and was just wondering if anyone received it,
thank you.

Hello Framers,

I have spent the last couples of hours trying to find an answer to this
question. I am importing by reference TIFFs into a Framemaker 8 file.
The TIFFs are a single file with multiple pages, but Frame is only
importing the first page. What am I missing here, I sure hope this is
not embarrassingly easy answer. Thank you for any help you can give me.
