Thumbs down: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-31 Thread Pinkham, Jim
I can see Diane's point of view, but all in all, I agree with Jerry. I
don't find the Welcome screen, usually at the back and seldom
encountered unless I have no open books or docs, to be obtrusive.
Sometimes, it's downright helpful. Thumbs up!

Well, to each his own, I guess. When I save things, I expect them to
stay where I put them and not return to the default position. Further,
when I upgrade software, I expect that the xy parameters of the file
window would be preserved. I should not have to reset them, but this
did not happen in FM9, even when I made changes and saved. But they did
in FM8. Am I seeing a bug here?

My book files are never buried behind any chapters. I keep my FM area
organized so that this does not happen. A litle extra work at the
beginning but it saves time later.

Diane,

The book window can (as any pod) be moved around. Just grab its title
bar and move it away from its docked location to a place of your
liking. It docks only on places where you see a light blue line
underneath the transparent item moved around.

But the location and size of the floating book window is not saved in
the workspace (at least not in my test). It seams that only docked
items ar "stored" in the workspace. IMHO this should be changed!

And - IMHO this is a bug - as long as only the book window is open,
there is no selection of workspaces possible. One of the last used
workspaces is active (and not the one used just before the current
session). The workpace selection requires an open document.

Hi Scott,

That makes sense. But oddly, even when I saved a book in FM9, it opened
again in the default place. Unfortunately, I cannot try it again because by
trial version just expired. I have ordered a trial version of TCS2. We'll
be upgrading at work eventually, especailly if they ahve fixed the graphics
bug (the one that prevents anchored graphics in tables from being converted
to RH) and I'll have to wait until it arrives.

What I'd really like to see is that FM9 would read the properties of the
files when it opens an FM8 file and use them, instead of requiring users to
reset and save them in FM9 to store the properties.

Thanks,
Diane

Actually it *is* FM that saves the book window position and size. This
info is stored in the book file itself, but isn't saved unless you
actually make a change to the book file which requires that it be
updated. Just moving and resizing the book won't require a save, but if
you move and/or resize, and also add/delete a file or change the
property of a book component .. then you can save the book and the next
time you open it it will appear that the new location.

Book window position (was .. Re: Thumbs down: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen)

Hi Scott,

That makes sense. But oddly, even when I saved a book in FM9, it opened
again in the default place. Unfortunately, I cannot try it again because by

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-27 Thread Corcoran, Susan
Hi RJ,

That's funny. I was going to mention that the gray interface is rather dull.
I have the brightness cranked up for visibility, but perhaps the team would
consider the option to customize the UI colors (Interleaf used to offer this).
For those of us whose eyesight is becoming more erratic with age, the ability
to adjust UI fonts and colors becomes more and more important.

Thanks for your reply. I look forward to the e-learning sessions you mentioned
in yesterday's post.

Thumbs down: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-27 Thread Kelly McDaniel
Window position and size is a property of the (Windows) operating
system. These properties are exposed in the API, but Adobe has not coded
to them. Lexmation offers RestoreWindows ini and dll.

That's strange, Mike. I happen to like the book file about 2 inches wide
and just high enough to display the list of files, and placed in the upper

RE: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-27 Thread RJ Jacquez
Hi Susan, so many things to do, so little time :)

I'm working on this session and also one on working with Frame9 and RoboHelp 8
together in TCS2, which is also urgent, so I'm on it.

BTW, yesterday I incorrectly posted a way to return a DITAmap to a Book view
and I said that it could be done by selecting Window > Composite Documents, but
the correct answer is to select the View > Resource Manager... menu, sorry
about that.

I will definitely add your UI Colors recommendation to our list of features for
consideration.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

Clicking on the double arrow above the book file tab shrinks the file to a
button that's pretty small.

Interesting. No version of FrameMaker ever remembered the size of the book
file window for me. I always had to resize it larger. In FM9, the default
window is tall enough that I can see the whole tree in the book file without
resizing. I like it-- though I find the window to be wider than necessary.
It extends about an inch to the right of the rightmost icon in the header
bar.

Thumbs down: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-27 Thread Diane Gaskill
Ssme here. To me, it's not a welcome screen, it's a marketing ploy to
advertise stuff, not far from SPAM (check the menu under Adobe), and it goes
away only when I open an FM file. And when I close the file, the darn thing
comes back again. Maybe it's okay for beginners who have no idea how to use
FM, but how may beginners are there? The screen is not helpful to me at
all. How do you turn it OFF? I do not see anything in the .ini file.

I also do not like the fact that FM9 opens a book file on the left side of
the FM window and its huge and docked. The last thing I need is to have a
book file take up 1/3 of the screen. It's also VERY annoying to have to
shrink it and move it every time I open it. This is a total waste of my
time. The book file needs to return to the screen in whatever size and
position it is saved in, just like FM8 and previous versions. They have made
FM considerably less productive by forcing somebody's idea of "pretty" on
everyone.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread Mike Wickham
> Does anyone else dislike the welcome screen?

It seemed a little odd at first, but as soon as I open a non-book file, the
welcome screen disappears. It 's actually handy to have the recent file list
there. So I've grown to like it.

Mike Wickham

RE: FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
One of the drivers behind our decision for the Welcome Screen in FM9 came from
new users' feedback, who found themselves launching FrameMaker to a blank
screen and didn't know exactly where to start.

However I do agree that there should be a preference somewhere for turning it
off for more seasoned users, but like Mike, I find it extremely usefully for
displaying my recent files as soon as I launch the product.

The good news is that for those of you, who find it odd, it goes away as soon
as you open a frame doc.

It seemed a little odd at first, but as soon as I open a non-book file, the
welcome screen disappears. It 's actually handy to have the recent file list
there. So I've grown to like it.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread RJ Jacquez
One of the drivers behind our decision for the Welcome Screen in FM9 came from
new users' feedback, who found themselves launching FrameMaker to a blank
screen and didn't know exactly where to start.

However I do agree that there should be a preference somewhere for turning it
off for more seasoned users, but like Mike, I find it extremely usefully for
displaying my recent files as soon as I launch the product.

The good news is that for those of you, who find it odd, it goes away as soon
as you open a frame doc.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

I'm on FM 9 p230 in the TCS 2. I just get the Welcome screen once when I
start up, but once I've got a document up, it disappears until I close
everything. I can't remember if I read in the Help about tweaking the
maker.ini file having an effect on this.

FrameMaker 9 Welcome Screen

2009-03-26 Thread Corcoran, Susan
I've just recently loaded TCS 2 and gotten a good look at FM9. I really
like the new interface, even though it is different. I especially like
the ability to customize it and save workspace versions. However, I've
found the Welcome Screen to be *really* annoying. Usually, welcome
screens disappear once an app is running, but this thing remains. I
realize it offers some shortcuts (and a lot of Adobe marketing links),
but I can get those from my menus, just like any other Adobe
application. I wonder why Adobe did this with Framemaker, when none of
their other applications behave this way. Does anyone else dislike the
welcome screen?
